Motoring

By James Baggott

Super-Size America Doesn’t Extend to LA Auto Show

For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it. It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bite-sized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond or waning one, take the event pretty seriously. Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations 6

meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-do-we-need-it Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red, which is redder than the

last red. Understood? Good. Jaguar also decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so. Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor. However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulf-liveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

Gardening Fighting the Frosts

by Pippa Greenwood

With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www. pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-yourcrops.

Although most of your garden plants are probably fairly frost resistant, what can you do to minimise the damage to those which are not so hardy? It’s time to get outside and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thinwalled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains, using lengths of hessian to create a more appealing outermost layer if the container is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast 8

A double fleece layer can be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Much larger plants can be protected with a home-made ‘cage’ – wrap a framework of four stakes or sturdy canes with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground freezes will help to keep water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly opened blossom,

though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy from a specialist nursery and to get late-flowering varieties, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored fleece or a fleece-covered pullout EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and seedlings. If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of wellanchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including popup crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pullout EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi for short, is one of the best and worst technologies of all time. When it works, it’s brilliant; when it doesn’t, it’s infuriating. But solving Wi-Fi worries is often very simple. The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Metal objects such as radiators are particularly bad, but older buildings with thick walls can be a problem too. The first step is to try moving the router somewhere else - the higher the better, because there are fewer obstacles the closer you get to the ceiling - but if that doesn’t work you could extend your network with a Wi-Fi extender. It picks up the signal from the router and re-broadcasts it, helping to reach places the router can’t.

Caramelised

Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar

• 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix

• 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced

• 5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TIP

Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano. 10

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Chichen Itza By Solange Hando

Listed by UNESCO and the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza claims the largest Maya site on the Yucatan peninsula.

F

rom their mysterious origins around 3000 BC to the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, the Maya were never an empire but a collection of autonomous city-states with a diverse culture and people who all left their mark across the ancient sites. Great architects, mathematicians and astrologers, skilled craftsmen, the Maya enjoyed their golden age during the classic era, around AD 250900, though Chichen Itza continued to flourish into the next millennium and beyond as new settlers arrived. Named after the Itza tribe at the ‘the mouth of the well’, the stone city scatters its atmospheric remains deep in the rainforest. There’s much to see on its 15 square kilometres but the great stepped pyramid of Kukulcan casts its spell at first sight. Rising to a height of 24 metres, the four sides represent the cardinal points, each one with a stairway of 91 steps, the number of days between equinox and solstice.

12

Add all the steps and one more to reach the top platform and that makes 365, the solar year. But the magic doesn’t stop there. During the equinox, a strange zigzag shadow creeps down the north stairway and for the Maya, this was the ‘feathered serpent god’ slithering down from the sky. They were at ease with the duality of the world, life death, day night, earth sky, hence the feathered serpent and the carvings of birds alongside jaguars and snakes. ‘Clap your hands,’ suggest the guides and suddenly the echo turns into a spine-chilling squeak, the call of the quetzal, they say, the Maya’s sacred bird. The sound travels far and one can imagine the high priest invoking the gods from the pyramid, watched by the 20,000 strong crowd gathered below. But in the Maya world, religious rituals were not confined to the great pyramids. Chichen Itza boasts one of the largest surviving ball courts where warriors proved their worth, throwing heavy rubber balls through stone rings, eight metres above the ground, without using their hands. The rings were shaped like serpents, the high priest watched and on occasions, the winner would be sacrificed, for only the best

should be offered to the gods. The sacred well had a similar use, a 60 metre wide sacrificial sink hole said to be the ‘womb of Mother Earth’. The Maya’s written history was almost entirely destroyed by conquerors but stone friezes and carvings say it all. Among many archaeological sites in this part of the world, Chichen Itza is unique for its similarity to Tula, the centre of the Toltec empire some 1,300 km away. The connection remains a mystery but both elements fuse beautifully, from the Temples of Warriors, Eagles, Venus and more to the striking complex of 1,000 pillars, the market where the slightest whisper can be heard across the square or the snailshaped observatory used to study the sky. By late morning, when day trippers arrive from Cancun, stall holders set up their colourful ware in the main alleyway, Mayan masks jostling with mini-pyramids, hammocks, silver bangles and toy jaguars which roar as you walk past. But on this vast enticing site, there’s always a quiet place where you can stretch out your hand and almost touch the past. There, nothing disturbs the peace but the occasional gust of wind or the distant call of jungle birds.

La La Land

O

r, the film that’s going to win Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, Damien Chazelle’s homage to old Hollywood is almost tailor-made for that award: yes, it’s about movies and The Academy loves movies about movies – The Artist! Argo! Even Birdman! That’s three winners in the last five years – but it’s also got great performances from the two leads, catchy musical numbers and a charming romantic tale at the heart of it all. So why do I only just like it? You’ll be able to gauge your own tolerance for the theatrics of La La Land from the word go as the film opens, all bright primary colours, with an audacious musical number during a traffic jam in the baking LA sun. This leads to the first of several meet cutes between Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian, listening to a cassette tape in his convertible ’82 Buick Rivera, and Emma Stone’s Mia, reading from her iPad in her Toyota Prius hybrid. He’s a brilliant, struggling jazz pianist who dreams of opening his own club and she’s working in a coffee shop on the Warner Bros studio lot but only between acting auditions as she tries to make it as an actress. They are both looking for that big break and instead find each other, but is that enough? Gosling and Stone are great in the central roles. Sure, neither of them are the best singers or dancers, they aren’t going to trouble Fred and Ginger any time soon, but

16

By David Tibbs

that’s fine. That’s perfect, even. There is an honestly about it all, a casualness that makes it seem more believable even when they are literally dancing in the stars. And I’ve been whistling the main refrain for days. It’s at times hilarious (Gosling follows up The Nice Guys with another fantastic comedic performance) and at others incredibly sad. But I just never fell in love with it, and I think I know why. Leaving aside one major piece of character motivation in the third act that I just couldn’t understand, which kind of undermined the entire central relationship for me (although I can almost forgive the film this due to that incredible ending) I felt like I was watching someone try to recreate all his favourite moments from his favourite films. There are times where I felt removed from the action because I noticed that was a bit from An American In Paris, or that looked like Singin’ in the Rain, or the fact it was shot in cinemascope (because all the old movies were) distorted a lot of the close-ups. Even though it does, at times, cross the fine line from homage to pastiche I think the earnestness with which it does relegates this to a minor quibble. This is a film that loves old movies, and anyone who does the same will be hard-pressed not to be charmed by this delightful number.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March

Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WHAT CAUSES EATING DISORDERS? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. TYPES OF EATING DISORDER Anorexia Nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possi20

ble via excessive exercise and/ or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BED) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis.

• Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. Get healthy! Make new friends! Come for a walk in Inch Park. Ageing Well is a project run by Edinburgh Leisure and funded by NHS Lothian. It’s a health initiaitive that recognises the beniefits of walking for wellbeing and social connection. Walking is one of the best ways to keep body and mind in good health. It’s easy to do, it doesn’t need special skills or equipment, it can be done anywhere and anytime. Plus, if you walk in a group you meet new people and have a chance for a good “blether”, followed by a cuppa and chat at a local cafe. Ideally we should all walk for about 30 minutes most days, but many of us can’t quite manage this much - yet we would like to be more active. Wednesday morning starting from 6th April. Just come along to Cameron Toll ( meet in the Main Concourse outside Sainsburys) for a 10.30am start. It’s free, it’s open to everyone over 50, and there will be qualified walk leaders to guide your every step. If you have questions phone the Ageing Well team 0131 458 2183 or e-mail: ageingwell@ EdinburghLeisure.co.uk

GILMERTON SINGERS is the name of

a community choir that meets every Friday morning at the Society Hall at Gilmerton Crossroads. It was started around 18 years ago by three ladies who loved singing, with encouragement from the Community Centre management. Our Musical Directory is Nick Hayes and the choir is made up at the moment of 20 women and 2 men. When the choir was started, one of the aims was to give something to the community and we do this by performing

at Care Homes. Community Centres, and local fairs and the like. Singing has been proved to increase health, wellbeing and quality of life. Benefits may include improved breathing, easing depression and keeping memory active. Because we are a small group, rehearsals are relaxed and friendly. Most people, when asked if they would like to join a choir, say ‘I can’t sing’. I’ll bet they sing in the shower, while washing the dishes or just for fun. Well, you don’t have to be a Pavarotti or Maria Callas to be an important part of a singing team. We do not audition prospective members and reading music is not necessary as we learn tunes by ear. If you would like to find out more about us, phone Muriel on 0131 664 1220 or email muriel.connolly@sky.com or call in at the Society Hall any Friday morning from 10amnoon. Hope to see you soon!

Beauty

Beauty Resolutions

by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

It seems you can barely pick up a magazine without reading about another new skincare ‘miracle worker’, from skin softeners and beauty essences, to micellar water. Most of these are ‘nice to haves’ rather than essentials. If you are looking to up your skin care regime though, I’d recommend adding a serum. They’re more concentrated than a moisturiser, and designed to target specific concerns, from fine lines to blemishes. French brand Ekia’s Sérum Fermeté – Highly Active Firming Serum, is designed to tighten and lift skin. The ‘magic ingredient’, a tree extract called dragon’s blood sap, is said to help firm skin, smooth fine lines, increase moisture and aid skin renewal. My skin certainly felt tighter and more hydrated after using the serum. £48.99 from www.hollandandbarrett.com. It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut. Rather than play it safe with your favourite scent, why not head to a local perfume shop and try a few new ones? Ideally, spritz a perfume on a card first. If you like the scent immediately, and still do after half an hour, then try it directly on your skin. Fragrance is designed to change over time, so don’t just spray, sniff and buy. 24

Give it time to show you what it’s made of. Van Cleef & Arpels So First (from £32) is a nice one to try. Light, fresh and feminine, it’s bursting with floral notes, such as freesia and frangipani, with a warm base of vanilla and sandalwood. Many of us are guilty of splashing out on top of the range hair straighteners and styling products, then throwing whatever shampoo and conditioner is on offer in our basket. My top hair care recommendation is to go for a gentler, decent shampoo and conditioner. Personally, I avoid any that contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as I find it leaves my hair dry and brittle. JASÖN do some great haircare products, priced from around £6.50 for a half-litre bottle that will last for ages. If you’re looking to treat yourself however, I can recommend Saach Organics Hair Strengthening Shampoo and Nourishment Conditioner. They’re packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as almond oil, coconut milk and hibiscus, and leave my highlighted hair feeling soft and healthy. Prices start from £9.95 at www. saachorganics.com. Makeup bags and brushes can be a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria, and that can lead to spots and skin irritation. So if you haven’t given them a wash for a while, now’s the time. Clean brushes with a gentle hand wash or baby shampoo, pat them dry and then leave to air dry. Alternatively, if they’re looking a bit worse for wear, treat yourself to some new ones. The Nanshy range is a good choice. They’re made with premium synthetic fibres (so cruelty-free), assembled by hand and rigorously tested. They’re also lovely and soft and great for blending. Nanshy brushes start from £5.95 at www.myshowcase.com.

Gadgets They’ll Love

Technology treats for your love on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids from your cutting30

edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than man-made bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to buy headphones that

connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one. Images L to R: Booqpad iPad case; Apple Watch band from eBay; Denon Envaya Mini portable speaker; SoundBot HD shower speaker

Cake and Bake Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta

These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!

Ingredients:

• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed

• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream

• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring

TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally

• Fresh raspberries

Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling 32

1. To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.

2. When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie

cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).

3. To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.

4. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove

from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.

5. To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.
