‘Sons and Daughters’ campaign earns international recognition

‘The Sons and Daughters’ campaign features banners across Marshall’s campus that feature various Marshall students alongside phrases that describe sons and daughters of Marshall, according to focus groups interviewed during the initial creation of campaign two years ago.

THE PARTHENON Marshall University’s “sons and daughters” outdoor advertising campaign took home a best of show award at the Education Advertising Awards sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Bulletin.

This is the second year the campaign has been awarded a title, winning an award last year for the overall campaign during its launch.

Ginny Painter, senior vice president for communications and marketing, said the campaign stands out from others because it is so genuine.

“We’re using real students and not stock photography,” Painter said. “I think the theme is different enough, no other school does it, and it makes us stick out. Those big ‘hero’ images of people’s faces, I think that’s very striking as well.”

Painter said the campaign captures the essence of what Marshall has to offer to students and faculty alike.

“It’s been fun to work on, it’s about who we are at Marshall, and I think lots of times when you roll out a new marketing campaign some people say ‘oh, I don’t like that,’ or ‘that doesn’t speak to me,’ and we haven’t heard that at all with this campaign,” Painter said. “We feature real people, real students, and that’s what’s been fun about it.”

TWG Plus, a higher education marketing agency out of Austin, Texas, helped take the idea to the next level.

“They’re the ones that helped us take the idea and develop the look that we have now,” Painter said. “We still work with them on a regular basis. They help develop some of our recruitment materials, but once they were able to help us develop the look and the language that we use, we were able to take on the rest ourselves and do it.”

Painter said all research done prior to the campaign’s creation pointed toward the “sons and daughters” theme.

“We had a marketing firm come in and do research, and they did focus groups with students, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the community,” Painter said. “They said ‘we had the weirdest experience in the first few focus groups, people kept saying ‘I’m a son of Marshall,’ and then the next focus group someone would say ‘I’m a daughter of Marshall,’ and it was right in front of our faces. It was funny because we had taken that for granted, but it really is very special.”

Students interested in becoming part of the campaign can contact the Marshall communications office.

“We’re always looking for students who want to talk about their Marshall experience and what it’s been for them,” Painter said. “We’ll take their picture, we’ll do a little short interview with them, and who knows, they could be on the next billboard or next newspaper ad.”

THE PARTHENON The graduate student manager, faculty manager and a journalism professor from WMUL-FM received awards during the National Broadcasting Society Professional Audio/Video Production Competition.

Adam Rogers, professor Chuck G. Bailey and professor Dan Hollis received five first place awards and two honorable mention awards.

The trio competed with other broadcast graduate students and faculty members from colleges and universities throughout the country during the 76th Annual Convention of NBS-AERho in Bethesda, Maryland.

Rogers won a first-place award in the Audio Other-Sports Programming category for “Marshall – North Carolina State Football Postgame Program,” which was broadcasted from Raleigh, North Carolina, over “Cutting Edge Sports Radio Network” Sept. 9, 2017. He also won two honorable mention awards in the Audio News Category for “Ryan Yurachek Houston Flood Relief” and “Marshall Football Open Space Tackling.”

“This marks the seventh year that a Marshall graduate student has won at least one first-place award in the professional competition sponsored by the National Broadcasting Society,” said professor and WMUL-FM faculty manager Bailey. “Adam Rogers has excelled in his sports-news reporting and game coverage regardless of the level of his competition.

His work is outstanding, and he is a wonderful representative on a national stage for Marshall

University, the College of Arts and Media, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications and WMUL-FM.” Bailey won two first-place awards in the Audio Commercial/PSA Category and Audio Scriptwriting. For the Audio Commercial/PSA Category, Bailey won for his advertising campaign “Marshall’s W. Page School of Journalism and Mass Communications sports journalism program promotional announcements.” The campaign was composed of four promos which featured the voice talent of former WTCRAM/FM news director Sarah E. Diamond. The promotional advertisements began airing on WMUL-FM on Sept. 2, 2017 and statewide on Dec. 8, 2017. Bailey’s first-place award for the Audio Scriptwriting Category was for the scripts of this campaign.

Hollis won a first place-award in the Audio News Category for “Bull Riders,” which aired on “5:00 p.m. Edition of NewsCenter 88,” Oct. 19, 2017. He also won a first-place award in the video news category for a different feature on a local rodeo event.

“I love telling stories and especially stories that have compelling characters and great video and sound,” Hollis said. “The rodeo is a fun event to watch, but I wanted to explore what makes the participants tick.”

Since coming to Marshall, Hollis has won 16 overall awards from the National Broadcasting Society.

Women’s Center sponsoring diaper drive for expectant mothers

THE PARTHENON The Women’s Center is sponsoring a diaper drive for the Cabell County Community Baby Shower. The Community Baby Shower helps families and first time expectant mothers prepare for the responsibility of caring for their child.

Claire Snyder, program coordinator for the Women’s Center, said the event functions like a regular baby shower, but it offers education as well.

“It’s an event with food and games and gifts, but it’s to serve families in the community that might be lacking financial or social support,” Snyder said. “Everybody can use education around pregnancy, labor and delivery, infant care, infant safety and those kinds of things. We try to get lots of community organizations to table at the event, and we have educational presentations and lots of giveaways, little starter kits for every family that attends.”

The Alpha Phi Omega sorority collaborated with the Women’s Center and had a puppy kissing booth Monday to help raise additional funds for the Community Baby Shower.

Katie McNulty, president of the sorority, said Snyder approached her about being a sponsor, and it was McNulty’s idea for the puppy booth.

“Alpha Phi Omega is a national community service fraternity, and each active brother is required to come up with one project during the semester, so when Claire asked us to be a sponsor for the diaper drive, I wanted to come up with a fun way to raise money to buy diapers for it,” McNulty said. “I figured somehow incorporating dogs into this service project would be fun for all and a great stress reliever for students in the midst of midterms before spring break.”

Snyder said she hopes the event can help to empower women.

“Being able to afford diapers is actually really key to women’s empowerment as well,” Snyder said. “Because if you can’t provide your children with diapers, they can’t go to day care. So, you can’t really continue your education or your career and those kinds of things.”

The diaper drive is also a way to celebrate Women’s History Month, Snyder said.

Marshall students urged to prepare homes for spring break

THE PARTHENON Students are encouraged by Marshall University’s police department and Housing and Residence Life to prepare their homes and dorm rooms before leaving for spring break.

Chief Jim Terry has tips to remember before headed home for spring break if students live off campus. These include leaving one or two lights on, asking someone to pick up mail, as well as taking a spare key instead of leaving it.

Terry also recommends not packing vehicles the night before leaving due to the possibility of break ins.

Students are being asked by the housing department to make sure they follow a list of rules they are being provided

to prepare to leave for spring break. This list includes unplugging all appliances except refrigerators, taking out trash, remembering to lock the door and other tasks.

Tracey Eggleston, the assistant director for housing and residence life, said students most often forget to take out their trash, which they ask students to do in order to avoid coming back to a smelly room. Despite what the students are supposed to do here, though, she has more important concerns.

“The most important thing though pertaining to spring break,” Eggleston said, “is that no matter where they go and what they are doing, the students stay safe.”

connecting the campus to the community and getting students, faculty and staff involved in service,” Snyder said. “We talked about ways we could get involved especially during Women’s History Month and something that helps women in our community.”

Diaper donations will be accepted until the end of the month, and some other items will also be accepted. Drop-off locations include the Women’s Center, at the front desk of the Rec Center and in the student center by the entrance to the bookstore.

“The event serves 100 families, and so we would definitely like to be able to get a pack of diapers, some wipes and diaper cream for every single family that attends,” Snyder said. “For this event, we are not taking used items, just new items. Due to safety concerns, we’re not taking baby powder. There are concerns about if it’s not used properly, there are inhalation and breathing issues.

It’s just not really recommended that home visiting services and places like that give out baby powder.”

The Cabell County Community Baby Shower will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 11 at the St. Mary’s Conference Center.

SPORTS EDITOR As Marshall men’s basketball approaches Friday’s first round NCAA Tournament matchup against the Wichita State Shockers (25-7 overall, 14-4 Athletic American Conference), the Herd shifts from conference champion to tournament underdog.

“We had our celebration,” junior guard Jon Elmore said. “That kind of ended (Sunday) morning. We’re locked back in, we’re going to go back to the drawing board tomorrow. Fly out there and get ready.”

The 13 seed in the East Region, Marshall, ended its 31-year drought without an NCAA tournament appearance and prepares for Friday’s contest against the four seed Wichita State—a team with extensive tournament history. Since 1964, the Shockers have earned 15 total NCAA Tournament appearances, including a stretch of seven-straight tournament bids since 2012.

Historically, the Shockers have appeared in Final Four twice (1965, 2013), the Elite Eight four times (1964, 1965, 1981, 2013) and the Sweet 16 six times (1964, 1965, 1981, 2013, 2015). Despite its extensive

NCAA Tournament history, the Shockers have never finished higher than the Final Four. Marshall is currently a 12-point underdog. Despite that, the Herd carries a confident mindset. “(Wichita State) is a great team with great tradition as of late,” Elmore said.

“We’re looking forward to it. We’re going in confident. We know what we’re capable of. It’ll be a good matchup.”

Marshall is on a four-game winning streak that includes a road win over then No. 24 Middle Tennessee and a Conference USA Championship win over WKU—a team that completed the season sweep over the Herd. After ranking seventh in the C-USA preseason poll, the Herd defied statistical odds as it won its conference championship. Marshall is used to being the underdog.

“That was our story from the beginning of the season,” junior forward Ajdin Penava said. “We’re used to it, so we know what to do. We have to go out there, play our best and bring energy and effort. Our game will speak for us.”

Marshall has yet to win an NCAA Tournament contest. Comparatively, head coach Greg Marshall’s Wichita State team

has claimed at least one NCAA Tournament victory every year since its 2012 loss to Virginia Commonwealth. Marshall head coach Dan D’Antoni said he has high hopes of breaking that streak in his first tournament appearance as a head coach.

“The first time you (go to the tournament), it’s very difficult to break through,” D’Antoni said at Marshall’s selection Sunday viewing party. “Let’s see if we can’t win this thing. Our goal is to win it all and then get together and enjoy that ride, wherever it stops.”

Marshall is 1-1 in its two prior games against Wichita State. In the teams’ first meeting in 1940, the Shockers defeated the Herd 36-33. The Herd answered, though, with a 60-24 win the following season (1941). Since then, the two schools haven’t met in men’s basketball. “(Wichita) has a lot of good guards and a lot of great pieces,” freshman guard Jarrod West said. “Coach Marshall is a great coach. They’ve won a lot of games in the NCAA Tournament, and they’ve built that program to an elite level. So, we have to be ready to play.”

Selection Sunday viewing party draws large crowd

THE PARTHENON Marshall Athletics invited the public to the Henderson Center Sunday evening to celebrate Herd men’s hoops’ Conference USA title and watch the selection show that determined the Thundering Herd’s NCAA Tournament destiny in the opening round.

About 30 minutes into the show, Marshall was announced as the 13 seed in the East Region, and the Henderson Center erupted in cheers. Players and fans hugged and high-fived each other, as cheering continued for minutes after the announcement. As the 13 seed, the Herd is set to match up against the Wichita State Shockers, the four seed, Friday at 1:30 p.m. EST at Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.

“This is awesome, man,” freshman guard Jarrod West said. “These fans are great. They came and supported us all year. They’ve come to every game and packed this gym.

I’m glad they got to come here and enjoy this all with us.”

The lower bowl of the Henderson Center’s south side was filled to capacity with viewers. Herd faithful were buzzing with anticipation while watching the NCAA selection committee’s decision. As the seeds were announced, the crowd awaited Marshall’s fate, uttering heavy exhales upon mention of other potential seeds.

As the selection show began, head coach Dan D’Antoni addressed the crowd, and fans chanted “we are Marshall” and “let’s go, Herd.” The crowd erupted with cheers at the mention of Marshall being

announced among the 32 automatic tournament bids that went to conference tournament champions.

“This is a great feeling,” junior forward Ajdin Penava said. “This is definitely something I’d like to get used to.”

The Shockers were 24-6 (14-4 inconference) in the regular season, and lost to the University of Houston in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. This season, Wichita State had notable road wins against then No. 5 Cincinnati and No. 16 Baylor.

“We’re looking forward to (the tournament),” junior guard Jon Elmore said. “We’re going in confident. We know what we’re capable of, so we like our chances.”

Wichita State’s scoring leaders are redshirt sophomore guard Landry Shamet (15 points per game) and redshirt senior center Shaquille Morris (14 points per game).

“Wichita’s a good team,” West said.

“They got a lot of good guards, a lot of good pieces.”

With the 13 seed, the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook set the Herd as a 12-point underdog against the Shockers. “(Being the underdog) was our story from the beginning of the season,” Penava said. “So, we already got used to it. We know what to do. Just got to go out there and play our best. Bring energy and effort, and our game will speak for us.”

Does the Student Government Association even matter?

Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates face off for their final debate before the Student Government Association’s election on Tuesday. Moderated by Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Matt James, the candidates were given the opportunity to question each other and answer student questions.

The month of March is filled with clipboards and tabling, posters and social media posts, all consequences of ambitious students running for the role of president of Marshall University’s Student Government Association. Throughout most

of the year, students don’t hear much about the SGA, but once March comes around, campus dialogue is heavily saturated by the SGA candidates.

Common themes among the platforms include advocating for diversity, financial

transparency and bridging the divide between the student body and its elected representatives. This divide is something prevalent each year, as SGA is often scoffed at as a country club for the university’s popular, white middle-class students.

given his fair share of broad ideas lacking detail. His campaign website vaguely describes plans to fight the state’s opioid epidemic. His campaign website reads, “Senator Manchin has been on the front lines of confronting the drug epidemic and is working with both sides of the aisle to help address this crisis from every angle from prevention to helping those struggling with addiction get clean. Joe wants to bring everyone to the table to help curb the overflow of prescription pain medication coming into West Virginia.”

Who is everyone? What are the angles being analyzed? This plan sounds nice to someone who glosses over it, but actually includes no details.

For example, Republican Evan Jenkins, current U.S. representative and candidate for U.S. Senate claims on his campaign website, “Evan firmly believes that ‘a good job solves a lot of problems’ – and that getting people back to work is critical to ending the opioid crisis that has destroyed too many lives.” While that is a fine sentiment, it provides no practical solutions.

In running for Senate, Jenkins is leaving his current seat in the House of Representatives open. Richard Ojeda, dubbed by The New Republic as “A new kind of Democrat,” hopes to take his place. However, he too neglects to give specific and workable solutions in his campaign platform. In the section on his website titled “Fiscally Responsible,” Ojeda writes, “By

targeting fraud, waste and abuse and bringing costs down in programs that are over budget, I believe that we can be more fiscally responsible without harming those who are most vulnerable.” In this section, Ojeda neglects to answer a vital question: how? He does not say which programs are over budget, or how he is going to cut these costs. What fraud is he referring to?

What waste? Abuse? It is the answers to these questions that matter-- the answers we do not have.

For all these candidates, plans are not plans. They are carefully crafted sentences that give the impression of passion but are really nothing but fluff. Plans aren’t always exciting or sexy, but plans work. Maybe the reason voters-- both on campus and in the state-- are so apathetic about elections is because, deep down, they know candidates’ campaigns are not meant to do anything but sell us. We are not able to analyze candidates accurately, because we can’t see any details. If politicians spent the same amount of effort meticulously researching and planning for solutions that will work for their constituents as they spend finding the right phrases to sell themselves, we would have more voter representation and more practical solutions in our campus, state and nation.

Talk just keeps getting cheaper FOR THE PARTHENON It’s election season on Marshall’s campus, with the student government race for president and vice president taking place today and tomorrow.

Yesterday’s debate between teams Hunter Barclay and Hannah Petracca, Jeremiah Parlock and Rachel Delaney, Marcus Tucker and Noelle Soares, and Madison Davis and Maddy Parker involved pointed questions, thoughtful answers and passionate rebuttals.

As the teams were directly asked questions regarding issues such as social discourse, perception of Greek life, tuition increases and their respective platforms, we noticed how rare it is for clear, feasible and workable solutions to problems to be proposed in campaigns of any kind.

This reminds us that election season is also nearing in the larger political climate. Primary elections will take place in just a couple months, and West Virginians must choose their congressional senators and representatives.

The issue of generalizations without pragmatic plans is not specific to these student candidates. In fact, the candidates for student body president and vice president did a better job of providing tangible solutions than we are used to seeing among politicians.

This divide may be attributed to overall student apathy, with 14 percent of students voting in last year’s election, and only 8 percent in the year before that.

Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and SGA advisor Matt James said the senate resembles Washington, D.C. “Government is broken at all levels,” James said. “There are some students who are there solely for resume purposes.

And then we have students who truly want to make a difference, but they don’t know how to feel included.”

This theme of inclusion and diversity may be the most important to SGA officials, and in order for student voices to be heard, for the university to progress the way the general student body wants.

James expressed a hope in fixing the SGA culture. In order for the university to move forward, student government must run away from its bend of exclusivity and run toward inclusion and true representation. This matters to Marshall’s future.

“Student’s truly underestimate their voice,” James said.

“When students gather, and they actually come to the administration with a cohesive message, students, typically, if it’s a reasonable, rational argument, they’re going to win because the students are the heart blood of the school.”

With the election in full swing, it is pivotal for the student body to engage in this process if they want positive change.

even less than that will actually be represented in student government.

For many, this apathy stems from a belief that SGA doesn’t matter, that it’s only about social status and an opportunity to build a resume, but ideally SGA representatives do have a voice that few students ever get to have.

According to their website, SGA senators serve on facultysenate committees and give about $25,000 per year to student groups.

The student body president has an even larger role, specifically in being the only student with a seat on the board of governors, as well as acting as a sort of liaison to various figures in the university’s administration. Given Marshall’s recent 4 percent tuition increase, it is important that our representatives are ready to fight for students and look into innovative ways to generate revenue.

Several candidates cited student enrollment and retention as a top issue, specifically regarding sources of revenue.

These are certainly big issues facing Marshall, with enrollment dropping by an average of 3 percent since fall 2015, and Marshall averaging a first-year retention rate of 73 percent.

With the student body president serving on committees like the strategic enrollment planning committee, the elected president really does have power to move the university

Marshall fraternity and Rec staff raise awareness for thyroid cancer

THE PARTHENON Members of Alpha Tau Omega and the Marshall University Recreation Center staff competed in a soccer tournament this past weekend to show support for a Marshall student recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Thomas Logston, a junior at Marshall, discovered he had thyroid cancer over winter break when he visited a doctor for a routine physical. Logston is a member of Alpha Tau Omega and is an intramural official at the Recreation Center.

Matthew Schaefer, the coordinator of competitive sports and camps, said the Recreation Center wanted to help show support for a student that has been an exemplary intramural official for the last year and a half.

“The goal of this tournament,” Schaefer said, “was to promote awareness about thyroid cancer, as well as supporting Tommy in the ways we can.”

The event consisted of four different teams competing in a double-elimination soccer tournament. Roughly 30 people participated. The teams were created by the Recreation Center staff as well as an Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

The tournament ended with Fox and the Hounds playing against ATO. Fox and the Hounds won 5-2.

Allie Price, a sophomore secondary English education major, said she believes everyone coming together to show support for Thomas was nice.

“It’s great to see people come together for one purpose,” Price said. “I feel like a lot of people that showed up didn’t really know soccer, and that just shows they were here to support the cause.”

The money raised during the event is being used to purchase a personalized soccer jersey for Logston, and the rest of the proceeds are being donated to Tommy’s family to assist with medical costs.

Matt Regan, a senior history and Spanish major, stated that as soon as the fraternity heard the news of Logston’s cancer, they wanted to help in some way. Regan also said he was not surprised that so many people signed up to play “Tommy is loved around campus, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that we had this many people came out,” Regan said. “It definitely does feel good to see all these people out here supporting Tommy and seeing everybody being Tommy Strong.”

Logston is currently undergoing treatment at home. He said he hopes to return to school after Easter. Logston said that even though the diagnosis came as a shock to him, he was thankful to have such a caring family from both his fraternity and the Recreation Center.

“ATO was there for each other through everything no matter what, and I experienced this first hand with this situation,” Logston said. “It’s given me not just best friends but brothers for the rest of my life that I can't thank enough. And the Rec Center staff will do anything for you, just help or make you feel better at any time of the days.”

SGA Candidates make final push before polls open

THE PARTHENON On Monday, March 12, student body presidential and vice-presidential candidates met in the Shawkey Dining Room to have their second debate.

Topics for the debate included: civil discourse, a main element of each presidential platform, a more successful fraternity and sorority campus, how candidates would each work with the board of governors on projects for students, including views on tuition raises, and also how the presidential and vice-presidential candidates intend to work together to get things done in office with each other and with other cabinet members.

Jeremiah Parlock and Rachel Delaney discussed how they want to improve transparency between student government and students within their platform. Parlock said he wants to accomplish this with releasing policies and financial things that are being changed, taken care of or progressed through student government. This would include how financial aspects are being used in student government. These releases would be a monthly announcement, according to the candidate.

“We want to advocate for the student,” Delaney said.

Madison Davis and Madison Parker were asked to speak more on their disability element in their platform. According to Parker, there are over 400 students at Marshall University registered with a disability; however, there are more students on campus who may have a disability that are not registered as such within the university. Davis and Parker said they want to create more of an awareness and inclusion on this topic for students at Marshall.

“We want to have a panel for the students with disabilities on campus, so that we can talk with them,” Parker said.

“This will allow a first-hand open conversation with them.

That way I know what the best thing to do for them is.”

Marcus Tucker and Noelle Soares said they want to work on more diversity within organizations on campus, but specifically more religious group diversity within the university.

“We want students to learn more and respect diversity with different religions on campus,” Soares said.

Tucker and Soares said they want to do this by creating more religious panel discussions on campus and have religious groups on campus have more events that welcome those within all religious backgrounds.

Hunter Barclay and Hannah Petracca were asked to elaborate more on their mental health platform. They said they want to implement more of an awareness to mental health on campus. They said they would start by trying to give students a "no-questions-asked" excused mental health day one day during every semester. Barclay said that nearly 52 percent of college students have a form of mental illness, including depression and anxiety. Barclay argues that these feelings lead to an increased possibility of suicide.

“This mental health statistic is horrifying,” Barclay said. “It is a matter of life or death.”

Voting will occur today and Wednesday.

THE PARTHENON The 32nd annual Student Juried Exhibition began Monday in the Birke Fine Arts Gallery where the College of Art and Design displayed their students’ best pieces.

Senior visual arts and painting major Tatiana Castro said she created her work “We Do Not Love for You” to represent and portray what it is like to be a gay woman.

“I wanted to approach the negative attributes of being gay, such as inappropriate propositions and people stating that gay women are together and in love to get attention or to be ‘sexy’ and display it in a way that I considered beautiful,” Castro said.

Corey Bond pushed a message about mythology and why he found it interesting.

“In mythology, in aesthetics, in Christian art and the traits of the people I see every day and how I view them in their own glory, human beings are such interesting creatures with many traits and psychological issues,” Bond said. “The zodiac is more than just a sun sign, there’s a whole chart. Every planet represents something in your being and the suggestions allow me to be creative when I get analytical with the people I encounter.”

Senior painting major Grayson Collins said his piece “Sinking” depicted a message of beauty.

“Art can still be beautiful no matter how far down you may sink,” Collins said. “That’s what I want people to take away when they look at my work.”

Karen Fry and her piece “7 of 316,120” portrayed a message of beauty as well.

“The message I want people to take away from this piece is that even though breast cancer is a devastating diagnosis, breasts fake, not, or the loss thereof - can still be beautiful,” Fry said.

The students expressed the emotions they felt when they found out their work would be on display.

“Anytime my work is displayed I feel such a great sense of joy for what I do and how far I was able to come,” Castro said.

Collins, Bond and Fry expressed a similar excitement.

“This was my last chance to submit, so it was really nice to be chosen,” Collins said.

The exhibition requested the students submit their best work, but some felt the work wasn’t their best.

“I don’t think this is my best work, but it’s a good start,” Fry said.

“I want to go into furniture making and my ‘Shirley Jean’ quilt top patterned was selected for the exhibition as well. It’s the first furniture piece I’ve made so far, and I’m very proud of it, but I still think the best is yet to come.”

Bond said he thought his work was good but would go back to change a few aspects of it.

“This is my best conceptual work to date, but I feel there were proportional issues made that I wish I could at this very second go back and fix, just because I’m such a perfectionist and take my work so seriously,” Bond said.

The exhibit will be open until April 6 in the Birke Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to students and faculty.

THE PARTHENON While most twenty-somethings from West Virginia are beginning to settle down with a steady job, local pop-rock band A Story Told is embarking on a 10-day tour this weekend for their second album “Good Looks,” which was released last fall.

Even after the release of an EP, two full-length albums and the opportunity to play at the Vans Warped Tour since the band’s formation in 2014, the members of the Charleston-based band said they are still hungry for more.

“We’re never settled or pleased,” guitarist Josh Allen said. “We always want to work harder and accomplish more, and I think that’s why we are where we are today.”

Allen grew up in a musical family, but said that early 2000’s poppunk music inspired him to become more involved and eventually pushed him to help form the group.

“It made being in a garage band and turning it into a career a reality, so I think that’s why I was drawn to it,” Allen said. “Ever since then, I’ve picked up every instrument I could and tried to learn it and tried to learn how to write songs and eventually started in bands, and now I’m here.”

Alex Chaney, lead vocalist for A Story Told, had a different experience and said he never considered joining a band until later in life.

“I grew up in church my mom loves gospel music, so that was kind of my first introduction to music,” Chaney said. “I was trained in piano with lessons, you know that kind of upbringing. We were into Backstreet Boys and all that stuff, but I don’t think a band was ever on my radar.”

Chaney studied music education in college but quit after a short time, knowing he wanted to be part of the music world but not necessarily teaching it.

“I knew Josh was in a band and he talked about me singing for it,” Chaney said. “I joined after, like, two shows.”

Allen and Chaney said finding a group of people that were on the same page in the local music scene was difficult.

“We were all in previous local bands, and local bands come and go so quick, you know, there’s people that aren’t serious and then people that are serious, so we basically kind of made a supergroup of people that wanted to pursue music further once those bands broke up,” Allen said. “We all just found common ground with a certain style of music, a certain passion and a certain goal.”

Allen said exploring the different paths life has to offer inspired the band’s most recent album.

“Getting a job, getting married, having kids, that’s an awesome life, but you know, right now we want to pursue music full-time and just because it’s different doesn’t make it the wrong thing,” Allen said. “We’re really trying to shed light on that area, that you can do whatever you want, don’t let where you’re from hold you back, or any situation hold you back. You just always have to go with what you feel is right and don’t let other people change that for you.”

A Story Told operates completely on their own, unlike some other groups or musicians who rely on others to produce their music.

“We’ve never had a record label, we’ve never had many outside people telling us what to do or how to do it, or giving us a bunch of money to do it,” Allen said. “It’s all really just been the five of us and our love for what we do. We’ve really built something from the ground up, there’s been no manufacturing of it, it’s not a product, we’ve done it ourselves. I’m extremely proud of that.”

Chaney said there have been many instances where he feels the band should have failed but instead persevered and became even more successful.

“A lot of scenarios and instances we should’ve failed, or it would make sense that it would be the moment that we stopped or didn’t succeed because it seems like so much was against us,” Chaney said. “On top of working full-time jobs, it is hard. I mean

it’s great that we could accomplish it at all. How many people have had a rock band here and have gone on tour? You know, it just doesn’t happen.”

The band’s first experience touring for more than just a few days at a time came following the release of “Good Looks.”

“We were really excited but also really nervous to see how we would handle 10 days,” Chaney said. “On tour there is a lot of down time and a lot of strange time, kind of in between time, so honestly the performances night in and night out, that’s the most exciting thing.”

Chaney said one of the best things about touring is building a fan base in different areas.

“You start hitting cities that you’ve played before, you start a fan base there, and it’s cool to go and see people in specific cities,” Chaney said. “I think that’s the coolest thing. It’s an opportunity to show them how we’ve grown but also see how they’ve grown with our band as well and for us to all experience it at the same time.”

Allen said this tour specifically hits a few stops that the band has not yet played their new music for.

“We’re going out for 10 days straight,” Allen said. “We’re hitting a lot of cities that we’ve been to in the past but we haven’t been to since we put out our latest record, so I’m definitely excited to get to those familiar cities and play new material, and show people how much we’ve grown.”

The tour will kick-off in Columbus, Ohio, this Saturday and will make a pit-stop in Huntington at the V Club on March 24.

Allen said the band will continue to work hard and break new boundaries.

“We’ll never grasp how big it is,” Allen said. “We’ve just had our heads down and worked as hard as we could. But, I think the goal for this is to make this a full-time thing and make this our life, and we’re still working toward that goal.”

The Market downtown expands with Navarino Bay

THE PARTHENON The Market is one of the brightest new business spots in downtown Huntington, and as soon as Wednesday, it will feature its very own authentic Greek restaurant called Navarino Bay. The Market is already home to several new businesses and locations, including the famed Austin’s Ice Cream, which is already a highly popular destination.

Huntington does not have its own authentic Greek restaurant, but it is home to the popular Greekfest, an annual festival celebrating Greek heritage. This past year’s Greekfest was actually when Navarino Bay owner Yiorgie Alexandropoulos announced that he would be opening the restaurant downtown.

Since then, he and many others have been hard at work turning Alexandropoulos’s dream into a reality.

“It was a long time coming,” Alexandropoulos said. “I’ve been planning this for years, and it’s crazy that we’ve come so far. I couldn’t be more excited for us to open.”

the restaurant to open in December of 2017, but different delays and complications pushed the opening back until March.

The restaurant will join Austin’s as one of the first new stores to open in The Market. A createyour-own pizza restaurant called The Market Fuel Counter also has plans to open soon within the new facility.

The Market is predicted to bring new jobs and some new business to the downtown area of Huntington. The Market replaced several old bars which were combined in the building previously. Since then, almost all of the inner workings of the building have been torn down and replaced with new spaces for restaurants and businesses.

“It’s exciting to be a part of this sort of revival here in The Market,” Alexandropoulos said. “Just being a part of something so new and fresh is just such a good feeling.”

Alexandropoulos said Navarino Bay promises to bring true Greek flavor to downtown Huntington and show its citizens what good Greek food is all about, all year long.
