This event honors community leaders, community agencies, and local businesses in the areas of education, entrepreneurship, social justice, and lifetime achievement that are making a difference in the Erie community.

You have made many contributions to the community since July 9, 1978 when sixteen women established Mu Nu Omega Chapter. Your record shows the chapter’s service to the Erie community which includes, but is not limited to: • Tutoring Erie School District students • Holding personal development workshops • Honoring women of achievement • Presenting Managing Stress workshops • Awarding numerous scholarships to deserving young students in the area • Honoring high school students for academic and athletic achievement The members of Mu Nu Omega Chapter embody the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, “Service to all Mankind”. If you are reading this greeting then you have encountered our signature event, AKA Honors: A Pink Carpet Affair Dinner Dance! This annual signature event continues to evolve and you continue to lend your support to our cause of honoring noble individuals in the community who make a difference. Secondly, you also support our Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship Fund which over the years has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to local minority students. We do not take your support for granted and appreciate what you have done to make this event successful. Along with your support, we provide a little bit of help to those who need financial assistance toward higher education.

To add a different dimension to this year’s event, hosts are local personalities Sonya Byes of “Chatting with Sonya” and Kwame, radio personality at STAR 104. The event also features prizes, dancing and more importantly our honorees! The Chapter is delighted to honor Cheryl Rush Dix - Education; Pineapple Eddie’s Southern Bistro - Entrepreneur; Bishop Dwane Brock - Humanitarian; Steven Spearman Sr. Sportsman; and the volunteers of Super Soul Saturday Program – Lifetime Achievement.

The Community Spirit Award was created to gain community involvement in our effort and to honor an individual under the age of 40 who contributes greatly to the community. The community voted through our radio, social media and digital advertising campaign. Their voices were heard and we honor our first Community Spirit Award honoree - Angela Euell McNair.

Finally, I want to thank the Pink Carpet Committee for their unwavering effort in making this signature event one of the best in the community. Led by Biddy Brooks and Janice Morris, this is THE BEST committee this side of heaven. In my eyes you are all “Legends” and live out our mantra “Service to All Mankind”.

We have reached a milestone with our Pink Carpet Affair event – 5th year – and we are pleased to serve as this year’s chairpersons. Over the past five years we have honored community members who have made a significant difference in the lives of Erie citizens.

We recognize that our event is not successful without community support. We thank each of you who are in attendance tonight; those who contributed to the Chinese Auction; those who purchased ads in our program booklet, and all who contributed in any way to make this event a success. In typical AKA style, we strive to present an elegant, memorable event for all to enjoy. We hope our vision has been realized.

We thank the committee members Lyn Twillie-Darby, Omega Gamble, Heather Moore, Teresa Oliver, and Pearl Jeffries-Steele. We also would like to thank our Hosts, Sonya Byes and Kwame Dankwa for your time and input to make this event successful.

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC & MU NU OMEGA CHAPTER HISTORY Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. To trace its history is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th century.

The small group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of a privileged position as collegetrained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery.

Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, a junior, the original nine Founders, Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe and Marie Woolfolk Taylor each had a special talent or gift that further enhanced the potential of this dynamic group of seniors.

To ensure the continuity of the organization, seven sophomore honor students, who had expressed an interest, were invited to join. Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden and Harriett Terry joined without initiation.

Nellie Quander was elected president in 1911. Under her visionary leadership, the Incorporators Norma Boyd, Julia Brooks, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Nellie Quander, Nellie Pratt Russell and Minnie Smith initiated a dynamic plan of expansion. The first step of establishing a national body in perpetuity was taken in 1913 when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was legally incorporated.

The Erie Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. began with the efforts of Soror Rubye Jenkins in 1974. She and other sorors in the Erie City and Erie County area spent many long months fulfilling the Alpha Kappa Alpha national requirements for the establishment of a graduate chapter. On July 9, 1978, their dream became a reality and Mu Nu Omega Chapter was chartered by Soror Madelyn HairstonGiddens, Great Lakes Regional Director. The sixteen founding sorors of Mu Nu Omega Chapter include: Barbara Burgess, Sharon Cook, Carolyn Cuby, Armendia Dixon, Gloria Furcron, Louise Hill, Cynthia Horton, Pauline Hurd, Donna Hughes, Gina M. January, Rubye Jenkins, Charlise Moore, Bernice Overton, Barbara Sims (Wiley), Elizabeth Pierce-Stuart and Kathy Williams.

EDUCATION AWARD

Cheryl Rush Dix, Chief Consultant Pathlight Associates LLC Informed - Empowered - In Practice As an educator with an Aerospace Engineering – Teaching – Administration career trajectory in roughly equal arcs, Cheryl Rush Dix has dedicated her professional life to establishing access and opportunity for science education. Cheryl led Erie’s Public Schools in developing science initiatives to enhance districtwide, inquiry-based science education for 13,000 PreK-12 students. System-wide, her work includes establishing the Science1st Professional Learning and Materials Center, which provides comprehensive instructional materials support and teacher professional development to district schools and regional partners. Notably, the science program accomplished a long-held district goal of shifting a struggling, ninety-percent poverty, ninety-percent minority school into ninety-percent proficiency on the state science assessment.

Cheryl Rush Dix is the founder of Pathlight Associates LLC, a STEM educator and Fulbright Researcher.

Cheryl’s national professional development experience spans faculty roles for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Exxon Mobile Teachers’ Academy, PA Department of Education Distinguished Educators, Smithsonian Science Education Center and the Math & Science Collaborative JOURNAL. Her professional affiliations include the Society of Women Engineers, American Chemical Society, Association of Science Materials Centers, the National Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals and the Fulbright Alumni Association.

Cheryl is a graduate of Mercyhurst Preparatory School, Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, and the Fulbright Finnish programs and holds a B.S. in Chemistry, an M.S. in Organizational Leadership and graduate certifications in teaching, administration and superintendency. Her 2015 Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching enriched her educational leadership capacity through a Global Best Practices capstone research project, which explored the high-yield instructional strategies Finnish teachers employ in science classrooms.

Cheryl was born the last of four children to Fred O. Rush, Sr. and Claudia Daniels Rush, who built a home enriched by respect for all persons, dedication to community and the love of learning. The northeast Erie neighborhood of her youth was a diverse with émigrés, Native and African-American, Muslim, Jewish and Christian residents; through which she came to appreciate varied points of view and value a mosaic community. She is a mother of three: David, Frank Jr. and Elena Dix. Cheryl currently serves as a Fulbright recruiter for the U.S. State Department’s Institute of International Education and on the Board of Examiners for the Mid-Atlantic Alliance for Performance Excellence’s Malcolm Baldrige Award program.

Welcome to the warmest dining experience in Erie, Pennsylvania, maybe the entire state.

To understand the success of this business you’ll need to know a little something about its four owners. Sisters Karen Thomas and Adrienne Paul born and raised by parents with roots in the south. Their dad, an independent businessman, who owned his own catering company in Brooklyn and mom, a junior high school English teacher, exposed their girls to many facets of the hospitality industry at an early age. It was through their experiences with the family business, dining and extensive travel with their parents that they both chose Hospitality Management as their field of study in college.

Karen completed Johnson & Wales University with BS in Hospitality Management and International Studies and Adrienne completed Johnson & Wales University with an Associates in Culinary Arts and NYIT Central Islip with a BS in Hospitality Management. Combined, they have well over 30 years of experience in corporate hospitality with Hilton, Starwood Hotels (Sheraton) and various other organizations holding management positions in event planning, front and back of the house food & beverage and personnel. While gaining valuable experience, they knew their goal would eventually be to start a business of their own.

After living in two different cities, for over 10 years, Karen, in Erie would convince Adrienne, living in Atlanta that starting their own business could be a real possibility in Erie. A few years of getting adjusted and then the unexpected loss of their father would finally have them decide it would be now or never.

This business idea, originally scratched out on paper, without a name just a basic concept; dining out should be a complete experience, involving three key features, environment, hospitality and a quality product. An idea that would not be able to stand today without the contribution of the other two owners, Jean Paul and Matthew Thomas.

Jean Paul, husband to Adrienne and our Executive Chef, a native of Port Au Prince, Haiti, has been the “flavor force” and the creative genius behind the fusion cuisine at Pineapple Eddie. He’s got well over 30 years of experience in the kitchen apprenticing with some of the best and the brightest culinary professionals in New York City. He has artfully blended southern regional cuisine along with native dishes from his beloved Haiti and offered something truly special to diners in northwestern PA. Last, but certainly not least, Matthew Thomas, husband of Karen. While he may not be seen at Pineapple Eddie on a daily basis, he is certainly a presence. A physician by trade, he is the offsite Promotion/Publicity manager and Analyst. Truly a numbers man, he keeps us focused and inside of our lines.

In the past five years Pineapple Eddie has much to be grateful for. We are thankful for the ever-present guidance of the of the Creator, through Him, ALL things are possible and the support of the Erie community.

HUMANITARIAN AWARD BISHOP DWANE BROCK Bishop Dwane Brock is the International Presiding Bishop of Covenant Ministries International Fellowship. To date, he is the Episcopal Head of 178 churches and well over 500 ordained clergymen. He is a member of the Joint College of African American Bishops and serves as a “metropolitan” to several reformation movements. Locally, he is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Word of Faith Development Corporation which encompasses the Victory Christian Center of Erie, Inc., the Bishop’s Institute of Applied Science & Biblical Studies, and the Flight of the Eagle Banquet Hall & Conference Center.

On June 18, 2018 Bishop Brock will formally have spent 48 years in the gospel ministry. He was consecrated into the ranks of the Episcopacy in 1996 in Augusta, GA under the auspices of Fellowship Churches United and the Lahoira Bible College. He is the former Pastor of First Good Samaritan AME Zion Church; the former President of the Erie Branch NAACP; and the former President of the Erie Conference of African American Affairs. He also is a former high school teacher of African American history at Mercyhurst Preparatory High School. He currently serves as the Chairman for the Housing Authority of the City of Erie, a Member of the Board of Directors at UPMC Hamot, and as Founder and Chief Executive Officer for the Eagle’s Nest Leadership Corporation which includes programs such as the Employability Initiative, the School of Financial Literacy, and the African-American Boys Academy.

Bishop Brock was featured in a 15 minute documentary on CNBC for his extraordinary involvement in neighborhood revitalization. He has been formally recognized by the United States Congress; and by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives numerous times. He has been featured in countless publications and newspaper articles circulating in the Erie area. His vast experience has caused him to travel all over the country spreading the gospel. He is in great demand as a powerful preacher and intellectual educator. Above all, he is a servant of the people!

SPORTSMAN AWARD STEVEN SPEARMAN SR.

Steven Spearman Sr. is a certified trainer at Personal Results Fitness and is a specialist in sports specific training and plyometrics. In addition to working with adults, he works with children of all ages from grade school to high school and he volunteers by giving health and fitness classes to the elderly at the GECAC Wellness Center.

Steven believes God put each of us in this world to live long and healthy lives. He knows he is in the right field because of the successful individuals he has helped since he started his business.

Some of those individuals include James Connor; Dominic Covato; Ali Grab; Mario Henry; Jovan Johnson; Jerry & Terry Roberts; Jawuan Walker and Mashia Williams. He also trained the McDowell Wrestling Team and the Strong Vincent High School Basketball Team which had an outstanding successful 2016/2017 season - placing 2nd in the State.

His mission is to live a life full of honesty, integrity and unconditional love; to never lose sight of what is most important and to help make the world a more beautiful place through his art as a personal trainer and his relationship with others. He considers himself an artist who helps people remake themselves physically and mentally. Individuals who are overweight and suffering with self-esteem issues are transformed and individuals who are not athletic find athleticism. His ability to inspire is akin to a Life Coach.

Steve, as he is affectionately known, studied recreational therapy at Cheney University and he served in the United States Army.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WERG - SUPER SOUL SATURDAY PROGRAM The award winning Super Soul Saturday Program has been a part of WERG since its inception at Gannon University in 1972. What started out as a student involvement project has spread to the community with the changing of WERG from a campus 10-watt radio station to a full 3,000 watts FM station.

For the last (40) years Super Soul Saturday Program under the tutelage of AJ Miceli, Steve Bohen. Tom Weber, Chet Laprice and the late Bobby Kaigler has filled a void of providing urban programming to the Erie community. Super Soul Saturday is a 33 Hour block of Radio programming, airing Saturday Morning at 12 a.m. until Sunday Morning at 9:00 a.m. on WERG 90.5 and can be also heard on the world wide web at www.wergfm.com. Super Soul Saturday provides music programming in the following formats of Gospel, Classic R&B, Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop; Rap and House. Information is shared with the community regarding events, programs and services available throughout the Erie community.

Super Soul Saturday Program has received numerous awards throughout the years. They include recognition from the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC); PNC Bank; The Sickle Cell Anemia Program; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; The Joint Committee of Gem City Lodge # 328 and Ozeil Temple # 317 to name a few. In 2014, WERG was recognized as the Number One College Radio Station in the nation.

Since it's humble beginnings many former staff of Super Soul Saturday Program have used their talents throughout the country in Radio, Television and Business. Super Soul Saturday Alumni include the late Steven C. Collins, Bobby Kaigler (Bobby K), Viki Lee, Michael Simmelkjaer (Michael Walker Luv), and Tony Mickens (T.N.T.) COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD ANGELA EUELL-MCNAIR Angela Euell-McNair is the Chapter’s inaugural Under 40 Community Spirit Award recipient. She was selected by the Erie Community through our radio, social media and digital advertising campaign.

Angela is the 36-year-old owner/director of Jumpstart Early Learning Center, LLC housed in the Booker T. Washington Center located at 18th and Holland. While running her own business she also serves on the staff of Mercyhurst University as an Adjunct Professor teaching Sociology. Angela was appointed by Governor Tom Wolfe in February 2016 to serve on the Commission for AfricanAmerican Affairs which advocates for the African-American community in Pennsylvania.

In 2013, Angela was elected to the Erie School Board of the Erie Public Schools and is currently seeking re-election to the post. She serves as the Community Liaison for the Board and has hosted the parental involvement series known as “Better Together” since her election.

She is the host of Erie Rips the Runway, an annual charity fashion show which benefits the Erie Boxing Academy, which is operated by her husband Drew McNair, who provides free boxing lessons to inner city youth. Erie Boxing Academy is a member of the IMPACT Youth Sports Association, an organization Angela help launch. The group services over 300 children. She raises community awareness around non-violence and unity through her leadership with Juneteenth, Minority Business Expo and Family Movie Night.

Angela graduated from Erie’s Central High School and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Edinboro University and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh.

She and Drew are the parents of five children including twin girls with autism. Here is a quote from Angela: “This generation of young people makes Erie special because they have such a creative and hungry spirit. They are go getters and are willing to put the work into making things happen where it counts.” The quote is a manifestation of what she declared as a 15-year-old who was featured in an entrepreneur calendar that she would own a day care facility which would provide second shift childcare. Her facility, Jumpstart Early Learning Center, provides that service seven days a week.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international service organization composed of college trained women who contribute to the well-being of their respective communities.

Mu Nu Omega, the Erie graduate chapter, founded in 1978, has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to college bound high school seniors. In 2015, we formed a philanthropic arm to manage our scholarship program so that we can make a larger impact in the lives of students who need financial assistance. Our non profit 501(c)3 organization is called:
