Hosted by Hawick Callants Club Cabaret Style seating £12.50 Licensed Bar Tickets available from ILF Imaging, Sandbed Hawick or online at www.borderevents.com/boxoffice

The Festival is set to get 2015 off to a great start In this year of Home-coming the history of two of our Border Families will be recalled in special events. Hawick Archaeological Society are very pleased that Andrew Scott of Harden has agreed to be their guest lecturer and Hawick Rotary Club play host to broadcaster Fiona Armstrong at the Literary High Tea. Those who attended last year will appreciate what an excellent venue the Auld Baths proved to be and the ever popular Scocha will get the festival off to a rousing start there at 8pm on Friday Evening. Building on the success of our Reivers Market and Encampment moving to the High Street the Primary School Reivers Games will also move there this year and we hope to welcome a number of new stall holders. Re-enactors will be out in force to add to the atmosphere and will provide a few surprises over the course of the day! Also don’t miss the school productions in St Mary’s Church we hope to attract big audiences for all the kids hard work. Wilton Lodge Park will be the venue for the Fireworks Display following the torchlight procession from the Common Haugh, then it’s back to the Auld Baths for the second Reivers Banquet - a great addition to 2014 and set to be even better this year. Sunday sees the Literary High Tea and another new addition to the program - your chance to meet the Ghosts of Drumlanrig Tower as dusk settles over our Auld Grey Toon! “Something for everyone” so get out and support all our events. Also please donate generously when you see our collecting buckets. If  you want the festival to continue we really need your financial  support!!

BORDER CLAnSMEn

RE-EnACTMEnT GROuPS

This local based “Living History” club is going from strength to strength with 2014 being the group’s best year to date. In 2014 the club were privileged to take part in Hawick’s 500 anniversary events, and played the role of the Hexham soldiers in the re-enactment of the skirmish at Hornshole to an audience of 1,200 children - a day to remember indeed. The Hawick Reivers Festival is always a favourite and special event for the club, which kicks off their 2015 season. They will be appearing as reivers from the period of 1603 - a dangerous time when Queen Elizabeth’s reign was ending and the reivers were keen to be raiding and feuding before King James VI took over a united Kingdom’s throne. For this year’s Festival the group will be joined by members of the 1st Captain’s Company and Loudons. Feel free to come along - ask a question or two and even try on some of our kit.

THE BEST OF TIMES THE WORST OF TIMES

7

The “Border Reivers” try to dramatically portray all aspects of everyday life in the Borders in the late 16th century: food, entertainment, daily tasks, politics, combat and training. Members of the group use “authentic” clothing, weapons, props, and skills of the times. Combatants must train in the use of the sword, targe and polearm to ensure that a high degree of both safety and correct technique are maintained. The “Border Reivers” take part in a variety of displays throughout the year, from “living history” displays for national organisations such as English Heritage to educational events for schools and fetes to charitable events and even films.

FALCOnRy RE-EnACTMEnT GROuPS

We are pleased to welcome back this year Falconry Scotland from their base at Jedburgh. They will be showing their birds on Saturday at the Reivers Market and there will be opportunities to get up close and handle some of the birds.

SCHOOL PLAyS In ST MARy’S CHuRCH DRuMLAnRIG ST CuTHBERT’S SCHOOL - 12nOOn ‘REIvERS CHARACTERS’ 5 role-plays highlighting the lives lead by the people of the Reivers’ time. Not just the big names like Kinmont Will, but by the ordinary folk of the Reivers time too, focusing on the characters and how their lives were affected by the time they lived in. There’s plenty of cross border raids, horses and scabby sheep, feuding families, scheming  and  fighting,  charging  and  lopping  off   of   heads  of   course. Not for the faint-hearted! :-) TRInITy PRIMARy SCHOOL - 12.45PM ‘MuCkLE MOu’D MEG’ P6 are performing a short drama based on the ballad. The children will  be  working  alongside  Historic  Scotland’s  Education  Officer  Jane Gaze to write the script, create props etc. The ballad is based on a young reiver (Wat of Harden) who raids Elibank Castle and is captured. He is given an ultimatum - marry their youngest daughter or face execution. This is a very difficult  decision based on the fact that Meg, their youngest daughter, is extremely ugly on account of her huge mouth.

STIRCHES PRIMARy SCHOOL - 1.30PM ‘A REIvER’S ROMAnCE’ Wat o’ Harden was one of the most famous of our Border Reivers. His name has been handed down in song and story. He was bold, intrepid, and daring yet with a kindly disposition. He married Mary Scott, the Flower of Yarrow and had several sons who inherited his reiving instincts. It was Will Scott, Wat’s son who was caught red handed by Sir Gideon Murray of Elibank after a raid, and to save himself from the hanging tree had to marry Murray’s daughter, “MuckleMoothed Meg”, a girl of strong opinions whose sharp tongue had scared off all her suitors. This incident is the basis of the Stirches play written by Alan Jermison.

Sunday 29th March, 4.30pm Mansfield Park, Hawick RFC

‘The Armstrongs can start a fight in a phone box… This is the intriguing title for the lecture by Fiona Armstrong. 500 years ago, just how troublesome was this borderland family? And how did other reivers compare? Broadcaster Fiona Armstrong looks at the clan deemed to be the most feared on the English/ Scottish divide - and assesses the relationship with other names like the Elliots, Grahams and Bells… Fiona has worked for TV both nationally and locally for both BBC and ITV. Now presenting ‘Border Life’ for ITV Border, she is a well-kent face in the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway...
