Dear Friends, Welcome to our Eighth Annual Quetzal Award Gala! This year’s event is dedicated to the accomplishments of women whose leadership has paved the way for many to dream and take action. State Representative Grace Diaz has touched countless lives through her public service. Tonight, we recognize her efforts in support of our community and our state. We are pleased to support five extraordinary college students and through their success, change the trajectory of their communities. Our Mission The Guatemalan Center of New England was founded in 2010 as a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage, promote and disseminate the Guatemalan culture. Our goal is to empower Guatemalans to lead productive and dignified lives, be proud of their national history and origin, develop and celebrate their identity as Guatemalan Americans.

Grace Diaz, a dedicated public servant, State Representative in Rhode Island’s District 11 since 2004. Born in the Dominican Republic, she came to Providence in 1990 with only $40 and two dresses. She was determined to succeed in her new homeland, for herself and for her 5 children. In 2004, she became the first Dominican-American woman elected to state office in the United States history. Since then, she has fought for legislation on issues facing women, children, and minorities; affordable housing, education, gun restriction, fair election participation, reform for the criminal justice system; and immigration issues. The first bill she passed created an Office of Civil Rights in the Attorney General’s office. She is proud to representing and fighting for justice for Child Care Provider. Her advocacy has gained a lot of justice and brought resource for working families in the state 2008, she was appointed vice-chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, the first Latina woman in RI to serve in such a high- ranking position. She has represented RI on 3 National Democratic Convention to elect the President of United States. Since 2015, she was named the Democratic Caucus Chair which makes her a member of the House Leadership Team. From this position she is advocating every day to bring resources for the Latino community such as: Free GED test, for low income families, allocated 2.5 million every year for the bilingual program and 3.8 million dollars for quality child care business. She is a member of both the House Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Rules. She is the chairwoman of the Legislative Commission on Child Care in Rhode Island. Representative Diaz holds bachelors and master’s degrees from Springfield College, which she earned in 2008 and 2010, and is a Minority and Women Business Enterprise Outreach Director in the

city of Providence.

Dr. Rigoberta Menchú Tum Nobel Peace Prize 1992 Dr. Rigoberta Menchú Tum was born in Laj Chimel Village, San Miguel Uspantán, El Quiché, her parents were Mr. Vicente Menchú Pérez and Mrs. Juana Tum K’otoja’. Married to Mr. Ángel Francisco Canil Grave and is the mother of Mash Nawalja ‘Canil Menchú and Tz’unun Canil Menchú, who died in December 1997. An outstanding social leader who has been involved in social initiatives and the vindication of women’s rights, she has been a protagonist of the struggles in social movements since the 80s and 90s. Most notably, she has been active in the denunciation of serious violations of Human Rights and of indigenous peoples. She led the Continental Campaign of the 500 years of Resistance and has contributed in promoting the respect of Human Rights with several national and international organizations which have played an important role in the process of peace dialogue in the region. Among the many recognitions she has received, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1996, “Legion of Honor in the highest rank of Commander” in 1996, the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in 1998, the José Martí Ibero-American Prize in 2002, the Aztec Eagle Decoration in 2010, the Rubén Darío Cultural Order in 2010; and more than thirty Doctorates Honoris Causa in the field of Humanities, awarded by prestigious universities in Latin America, Europe and Asia. She has written seven children’s books, promoting the ancestral teachings of the Indigenous Peoples, along with books on the Culture of Peace, including her testimonial book “My name is Rigoberta Menchú, and That’s How my Conscience was Born.” Her most recent book “K’aslemalil - Vivir” The Walk of Rigoberta Menchú Tum in Time.
