ACCESS RUM

WHEN IT RAINED RUM The Real McCoy, a story about prohibitions most famous “Rum Runner”. His private yacht, the “Blue Lagoon”, became Bill McCoy’S resting place. On December 30, 1948, 71 years old famous rum smuggler, died of a heart attack surrounded by what he loved the most, the sea.

D

uring the Prohibition, putting together his life savings, Bill began his career as a smuggler, investing in a 90-foot schooner named: Henry L Marshall. He arrived at the Nassau smugglers port, in the Bahamas, were he loaded up hundreds of cases of Canadian whisky. Three days later, McCoy would be back into US waters, where the whisky was sold for $15,000 in tax free funds. The year was 1921 and William (Bill) McCoy wanted more.

McCoy is credited with the idea of moving large ships, to the edge of the threemile limit of the U.S. jurisdiction, and there selling his cargo to his wealthy buyers clientele, local fishermen and boat captains. Soon, others were following and the three mile limit was known as “the Rum Line” and the ships waiting, the “Rum Rows”.or Rum Runners. Many rum-runners made the trip through the Great Lakes and the island of SaintPierre, an important base used by smugglers, including the famous gangster, Al Capone. The term, “The Real McCoy”, is said to originate from the prohibition-era Jacksonville boatyard owner and rum-runner. While popular crime figures like Al Capone were running Chicago and Detroit, McCoy was in control of the Atlantic Ocean rum-running, between the Bahamas and Canada.

SCANDAL THAT ROCKED MIAMI. The Candy Scandal - In the 1960’s, Miami Beach was a jet set hangout for the Rich and Famous. The ideal weather, beaches, condos and already celebrated nightlife, attracted wealth from around the world.

I

Including millionaire, businessman Jacques Mossler and his trophy wife Candace (Candy) Weatherby Johnson. In 1964, a media frenzy erupted when the millionaire was found dead in his Biscayne apt. The authorities were notified and the hunt for the murderer began. The police did not have to search further out, for the murderer was apparently a member or very well known person of “the family”. t turns out Melvin Powers, Candy’s nephew was living with the couple, prior to the murder. Candy’s older sister had called her and said she was having problems with her son Mel. She asked if she (Candy) and Jacques could take him in, to keep the young man out of trouble. The 28 year old was a tall, handsome man that, once installed in the Mossler mansion, started having an incestuous relationship with his aunt, Candy, who at the time was 50 years old. Thanks to several servants in the Mossler household, Jaquess was informed of his wife dalliances. In the apartment the police found a diary and one of his last entries read: “If they don’t kill me, I will have to kill them”. On June 29th, around 4:30 am, the police received a call from Candy: Jaquess Mossler had been stabbed 39 times, his head left in a pulp. From the get go, the authorities felt, this was a crime of passion. Let’s say, the diary gave the cops the lead to pursue what Candy knew and what apparently her nephew, Melvin had done. At the Miami International airport, a Mossler company car, was found in the parking garage. Inside the vehicle fingerprints matched those found in the Biscayne apartment. Authorities found out that, Melvin had flown back to Houston, just hours after the horrendous incident. Eventually, Mel Powers was arrested for the murder of Jacques Mossler.

Incredibly, both Mossler and Powers were acquitted of the murder. Police officers and the District Attorney’s office desisted the search for Jacques’ assassins, as they stood by their initial conclusion that Candace and her lover had committed the crime. Eventually, Powers and Mossler broke up and in 1976, Candy took an overdose of migraine medication and was found dead in her hotel room. In October 8, 2010, the body of Melvin Powers, was found dead in his Houston, Texas home.

www.mun2access.com

At a younger age; Did you envisioned yourself in the position you are now? Yes, I never thought at what age… but I always believed it would happen at some point. What was your first job and how old were you? My first real job was in a restaurant as a hostess when I was 20 years old. How easy or difficult was it to get to where you are now? No, it wasn’t easy at all. It was a lot of hard work, being patient and being positive.

T

he sexy Latina is constantly enriching her craft and for this reason she is actually taking acting lessons. A proverb that Betancourth uses in her personal and professional universe are: “Instead of focusing on all the bad, be thankful for all the good, because each day you have is a blessing. Always believe in yourself. No matter who’s around you being negative or thrusting bad energy around you, totally block it off. Because whatever you believe you become”. Perhaps saying “we should all incorporate in life. What do you like best about your work? What I like about my job is that every day offers something different; different people, places and roles. And the opportunity to meet people from around the world Do you believe in team work? Very much so; always. What big satisfaction have you received from your craft? I think the biggest thrill was when I went on tour with singer Julio Iglesias. What do you think of this saying “You have to give to receive”? I think you always have to give without expectations. There is more satisfaction in giving than receiving plus you reap what you sow. What do you do in your free time? One of my favorite things to do in my free time is read a book, in my favorite coffee place, with a huge mug of coffee, of course. What do you understand by the word “compassion”? Compassion is to have love for others. Favorite food? Japanese food

White! What would your advice be to a young person who wishes to follow your steps? Never stop dreaming, but dream big, work hard and keep believing that it will come true and it will, at the perfect time.

ACCESS MAN

HAROLD LOZANO: When hard work equals success At a younger age; Did you envisioned yourself in the position you are now? I never saw myself working in the nightlife industry but I always knew I would be a business owner. They say hard work pays off and I totally agree. I’m far from lazy and I never give up. I’ve never shrunk away from getting my hands dirty. I’ve always had the “Whatever it takes” attitude.

H

ow easy or difficult was it to get to where you are today? It was tough, just thinking about this question gives me chills. It reminds me of my past struggles. Life hasn’t been easy for me at all. I left home at 16 years old and always had to much pride to go back. I never really had that father figure . I’ve always been a self taught survivor. I’ve made mistakes and learnt in life the hard way. I decided on a fresh start and a move to Miami. I wanted to be a new man and rediscover myself. So Lozano started by dropping 40 lbs, got lean and mean and pursued a career in modeling and acting. “That wasn’t paying the bills, so I started working in restaurant and bars, in South Beach. Sooner than later, Harold started making friends, most of them people who worked in the night life industry. They were living the Miami Beach fast life and not working as hard as Lozano, an it dawned upon the business man: “Why not? Why not me? A fresh image and a fresh start, perhaps its my time to shine”.

“I’m a firm believer in what doesn’t break you, will make you and here I am”. Harold considers life as his classroom. He has always been self taught and will continue to do so.

What do you do in your free time? Nothing crazy, I like to play with my dog, hang out with my girl and catch up with my family. My business life is so energetic and crazy that I just need some down time and catch on sleep.

A proverb you use every day to motivate yourself or others: “Good things come to those who wait”. Well I’ve tweaked this saying to suit my life. “Good things comes to those who work their butts off and never give up”.

What do you understand by the word “compassion”. Compassion is important in life. Everyone in life has their own story and somewhere down the line, they’ve been thru something you haven’t been thru or you don’t even know about.

What do you like best about your job? Meeting interesting people and making new friends from across this country and beyond. Do you believe in team work? You have to have a good team. You are only as good as your weakest link. Even Lebron needs D wade. What has been the most job satisfaction? Getting paid to party with celebrities. Living and working in Miami you never know who’s going to walk down the carpet next. What do you think of this “You have to give to get”? Starting any new business you always have to give to get. You got to build relations, get your name out there. You can’t expect to be an overnight millionaire. Same thing goes for your personal life. It takes a bit of give and take and to realize who are you, who are your true friends and who, just want a free ride.

Favorite food? Nothing beats my mothers cooking. I’m of Colombian decent so I love my authentic Colombian food. What song do you listen to that inspires you, lifts and motivates you? Good Life by Kanye West and It’s A Beautiful Day by U2. One’s my business inspiration and the other, my personal inspiration. What color brings you joy and serenity? Red. It’s the only color that has any personal meaning to me. Your advice to a young person who wishes to follow your steps? Never give up and be persistent. Life throws us all challenges so just keep your eye on the prize. It’s well worth it, in the long run.

ARTS

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY: Seven Windows The artist covers the windows of the Parisian museum with sounds... Awarded the Golden Lion for best artist in the Venice Biennale, in 2011, and for his work on the video The Clock, Christian Marclay, is an American Swiss artist, born in 1955, who lives and works in London. Marclay has been exploring the links between the visual arts with the sounds of the past 30 years, such as, music, performance, photography, video and installations.

W

ith the reopening of the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, Christian Marclay proposed an innovative design for the seven windows that are part of the structure and the facade of the museum. For this new project, the artist was inspired with onomatopoeia or words that recreate a sound. The same is a direct reference to the graphic expression of sound and the world of graphic novels and / or comics.

Since the late 1980’s, Marclay has been exploring these words through collages, photographs, and more recently, with musical scores. The spectacular color collages cover the windows of the building. The division of these glass vertical walls evokes the organization of a comic book page, leading to the feeling of a solid story that unfolds in space as the visitor walks by the museum. The onomatopoeia that inspires the composition of each window, ranges from the American comics, Gothic stained glass and hanging scrolls or kakemono of Japan. These multiple references, underscore the universality of the emotions, expressed by the onomatopoeia, despite the differences between the language and culture of origin. If you go to Paris, you may enjoy Christian Marclay’s work whether from the inside, during the day, when the natural light is coming from the outside and at night, standing outside the museum, illuminated by the light of the Palais de Tokyo restaurant.
