Our programme aims to develop children's 'Skills for Life'. It helps them grow into confident adults, that understand and enjoy the importance of leading healthy active lifestyles.
At your first class, you will have experienced a fraction of the potential that Tumble Tots has to offer your child in the future.
Today’s equipment is only a small part of the apparatus and the layout is changed every two weeks (six weeks for 6 MonthsWalking).
This gives us the opportunity to concentrate on different skills and to intensify the challenges as the children develop within the programme.
Age Groups:
6 Months - Walking
Walking - 2 Years
2 - 3 Years
3 Years - School Age
Gymbobs (School Age - 7 Years)
The basic philosophy is to ‘build selfconfidence’ through the development of the child’s physical learning. This is achieved by focusing on four important areas:
General motor skills
Social awareness
Self assurance
Self discipline
They gain this through:
A structured development programme
Ongoing challenges
A fun and happy atmosphere
Well trained and enthusiastic staff
A safe environment
When your child receives their membership pack, encourage them to wear their t-shirt in classes to feel part of the club!
Before you leave and in the case of severe weather conditions, please check your text messages, emails, our website or Facebook page for closures.
Please dress children in suitable clothing to allow for better movement and avoid jewellery, dummies or any clothing that can catch on the equipment or cause injury.
Barefoot is best (and safest) for children as this helps with their development. Grownups can wear shoes if they aren’t high heels or heavy boots as these can hurt small fingers or toes.
Please take your child to the toilet before classes begin to save interruption (this is especially important for the over 3’s classes).
If you need to bring a sibling along to class, please be aware that they are unable to participate or play on the equipment as they will not be covered by insurance. We recommend bringing something to occupy them such as a book or colouring.
Make sure you arrive in plenty of time and register your child at the desk.
Parents are fully responsible for their children in the under 3’s classes. We ask that you work directly with your child, encouraging and assisting where necessary. Support your child by holding the back of their T-Shirt so their hands are free for climbing and to aid balance.
In the over 3’s classes, grown-ups are not actively involved but must always remain on the premises.
Children are asked not to eat or drink on the equipment but if they need refreshments, you are welcome to take them to the waiting area.
Please do not take any photographs or videos during the classes and refrain from using mobile phones so your child has your full attention.
Do not let children onto the equipment before or after classes. Please move to the waiting area so we can set-up safely for the next class.
Our progressive play programme is designed to develop your child’s physical skills. Using bespoke colourful equipment, we focus on agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination, which enhances brain development and builds confidence.
Every session is supervised by our amazing specially trained staff, getting the best out of each child. Up until 3 years, grown-ups participate as well so that parents, carers and even grandparents can spend time with little ones as they develop.
The journey begins for babies from 6 months old who can sit up unaided. Here’s how our classes break down:
Babies explore the equipment in a happy and relaxed environment. This enhances their brain development and helps them to reach key milestones such as crawling, cruising and walking, taking them onto the next class.
Confidently walking toddlers are now introduced to an exciting circuit of equipment as well as hand held co-ordination activities, developing their fine motor skills. ‘Circle Time’ helps language development through rhymes and action songs.
Working together in small groups, little ones are introduced to stations with more challenging equipment to refine their agility, balance and climbing skills. Following instructions and learning to take turns develops their listening and social skills, as well as confidence.
Children now take part independently without their grownup, putting into practice their skills for life. Our staff challenge each child individually to their full potential, preparing them for school, physically, socially and mentally.
Gymbobs is the pinnacle class of Tumble Tots, bringing together everything children have learnt so far! Using challenging equipment setups, relay races, team games and warm-up exercises, Gymbobs is a perfect addition to a child’s school P.E. provision.
*For the 3 Years – School Age and Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years) classes, parents must remain on site.

We were thrilled to catch up with Luke Whitehouse recently, Olympic Gymnast, English, British and Double European Senior Floor Champion, and of course, former Tumble Tot! During Luke’s welldeserved holiday following the Paris Olympics 2024, he took time out to talk to us about his journey from Tumble Tots to the Olympics.
QParis 2024 Olympic Games – wow! Can you share any highlights with us about what it was like to compete?
A dream come true. The whole Olympics was a brilliant experience that exceeded anything I could have ever imagined. Team GB provided us with everything we could possibly want. The kit was fantastic, and we received so much of it! Competing alongside one of my childhood heroes, Max Whitlock OBE was incredible. It was a really strong men’s team made up of five of us. We qualified for the team Final in 3rd, but in the Final just missed out on medalling coming 4th beaten by Japan, China and USA. The pressure of competing at an Olympics you can’t really replicate, I guess it’s like taking a penalty in the World Cup Final.
Main picture: Luke finishing the Floor Final, Bercy Arena Paris, Paris Olympics 2024
Above: Luke (left) and his brother Joshua
Personally, it was fantastic to qualify for the Floor Final. My goal was to win gold, but I had to settle for 6th best in the world, due to a technical ruling on one of my landings. This final was one of the highest scoring and best I’ve ever seen, and it was incredible to be part of it. I enjoyed every moment.
QHow did you prepare, both physically and mentally, for Paris 2024? Will you do anything differently looking ahead to LA28?
I train at both the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall and Leeds Gymnastics Club 33 hours a week, 6 days a week. As an all-around gymnast, I compete across all 6 pieces of artistic apparatus: Floor, Pommel, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. To prepare there is lots of repetition of the individual elements for each piece of apparatus, for
example, my first tumble on Floor is a Tripleback somersault which I have now done hundreds of times. We do lots of part and full routines that we will perform in competition.
Alongside this we do lots of conditioning, but recovery is just as important, so alongside eating healthy, sleeping, we use the sauna and cold therapy (ice bath) and massage to ease our muscles. The physiotherapists are really important in helping keep our bodies fit. The mental side is tough, I do a lot of visualisation of the routines and we do have psychologists to help us, but much is just trying to keep relaxed and believing in ourselves.
We could not compete at this high level without the National Lottery and players who help fund gymnastics and the athletes so we can focus on the training, so grateful to them. For LA28 it will be much of the same, but I will hopefully increase the routine difficulties to improve my scores all-round.
I am coached by Andy Butcher, Dave Murray and Tom Rawlinson based in Leeds, alongside working closely with the National Coach, Baz Collie.
QAt what age did you realise you wanted to pursue gymnastics professionally?
I played lots of sports when I was younger which I think was important. I took part in athletics, tennis, swimming, football and others, including my gymnastics until I was about 9 or 10 years old, competing in all, so could have gone a number of directions. I slowly had to decide what sports I wanted to focus on, as each activity started to increase the hours they needed me to train.
From the age of 9 my dream to was to compete at the Olympics with London 2012 the catalyst, but it was always as a gymnast. I loved the gymnastics, so committed to that from the age of about 12, but then realised getting into the national squad never mind getting to an Olympics wasn’t going to be easy…
I eventually was selected into the Junior National Squad when I was 17, competing at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Azerbaijan and at the Junior World Championships in Hungary that year. It was only then I believed I could pursue a gymnastics career at a Senior level, but it is so tough to get selected for an Olympic team as there are so many really good British gymnasts.
Q What advice would you give to young gymnasts aspiring to reach the Olympic level?
The first and most important bit is to enjoy your sport and make friends and create memories along
the journey. The Olympics is an aspiration, so it is important to have small incremental and achievable goals. Train hard and believe in the process.
There are lots of challenges to overcome at whatever level you aspire, so your resilience is vital, don’t give in and fight for what you want. Enjoy the successes, but understand things won’t always go to plan. You won’t always get selected for the team/ squad when you think you should or you may pick up injuries, so don’t expect everything to come easily or straight away.
To get to the top of any sport and in particular to get to the Olympics there will be lots of sacrifices along the way, missing social occasions, parties or holidays with family & friends as you’re training or competing. The key is to remember to enjoy what your doing.
QDo you think attending Tumble Tots contributed to your love for gymnastics?! Tumble Tots I believe gave me a great start and a solid grounding for my future career in gymnastics. Having fun whilst inadvertently learning so much about yourself and your own body, how to balance, agility & physical confidence at that age is incredibly important.
The amount of people who I have spoken to, including athletes in other sports in Paris who were proud to say they used to do gymnastics when they were younger was unbelievable. Tumble Tots and gymnastics clearly produce great all-round athletes.
Thank you so much to Luke for taking the time to talk to us and to Luke’s Dad for finding the photo of Luke and his brother Joshua in their Tumble Tots t-shirts 20 years ago!
Tumble Tots are committed to helping build the healthiest generation in history.
The NHS physical activity guidelines recommend that children under 5 should be active for at least 3 hours (that’s 180 minutes) each day!
There are all kinds of ways in which your little ones can keep active for the recommended amount of time.
Here are some of our favourites:
Climbing helps to develop children’s fine motor skills, improving their grasp and grip. Climbing requires focus and concentration as well as hand, feet and eye co-ordination. Children must put their hands and feet in the correct places if they are to successfully mount a piece of climbing equipment. Whilst climbing up and down on smaller apparatus is a good start, as your little one grows up they will need more of a challenge to further develop these skills.
Skills for Life! Climbing builds cross-lateral skills which are needed when little ones develop their handwriting skills.
Active play activities such as hide-and-seek are loads of fun! But there are also cognitive benefits to these activities. It raises children’s curiosity, their spatial awareness, and offers physical challenges which aim to increase their agility and balance skills. With small groups of children tag is great at developing a variety of physical skills as well as fair play and teamwork.
Skills for Life! Searching for objects develops problem-solving skills transferable to the classroom.
Jumping is a great way for children to use all key muscle groups in their body. But it is the core muscles that benefit the most from jumping, as these are the muscles used when jumping or landing. Jumping from one spot to another is great for a child who wants that extra challenge. Why not encourage your little one to imagine they are frog, jumping from one Lilypad to another?
Skills for Life! Core strength is essential for all kinds of activities including riding a bike, climbing a ladder or even playing twister!
Crawling is a really important stage in a child’s physical development. It develops their balance, gross and fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It also makes young children co-ordinate both their upper and lower body. Crawling is also super important for a baby’s brain development as both sides of the brain work together building the fundamental skills for ongoing development. Tunnels are great ways to encourage children to start crawling, especially if you are on the other side encouraging them all the way.
Skills for Life! Crawling builds up a child’s confidence to explore new places, building independent confidence.
Playing with objects is great before children start walking, especially if those objects stimulate more than one of the child’s senses. Putting a toy in front of a baby, who is not yet walking, encourages them to reach out and grab it. Playing with objects also teaches little ones about object permanence, the idea that objects exist even if they cannot be seen or heard.
Skills for Life! Research shows playing with objects that stimulate children’s senses builds nerve connections in the brain pathways, supporting language development.
Catching, throwing or rolling balls and other objects is a great way for children to develop their agility and hand-eye coordination. This activity is super fun inside or outside and can use a variety of objects including balls, flying disks and bean bags. To improve these skills further why not add a bucket to the equation and encourage your little one to throw an object into the bucket. This will also develop persistence skills. Remember to watch out for your child’s hand preference as that may start to reveal itself during these activities and always encourage them to use both sides of their body.
Skills for Life! Catching and Throwing gives a child more control over their eye movement, making it easier for them to focus on their reading.
There’s something truly magical about watching your child splash through a puddle (even in summer!), marvel at a ladybird, or wobble their way down a leafy trail. In a world dominated by screens and schedules, the countryside offers a wild, wonderful antidote—one that benefits your child’s development and brings your family closer together.
The British countryside is a treasure trove of sensory experiences. From the crunch of leaves underfoot to the scent of wildflowers in bloom, every step outdoors is a mini adventure for your child’s senses. Even the simplest of walks becomes an opportunity to explore, learn, and play.
Experts agree that time spent in nature boosts children’s cognitive development, emotional resilience, and physical confidence. Uneven terrain helps with balance and coordination, while the open space gives them the freedom to roam, climb, and move in ways that indoor environments simply can’t offer.
Regular countryside visits help children develop an early bond with the natural world. They start to notice the seasons change, listen for birdsong, and recognise different types of trees and bugs. This awareness fosters a deep sense of care for the environment—something our future needs more than ever.
And for parents? It’s a reset button. Time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. Plus, there’s something deeply grounding about walking hand in hand with your child under an open sky.
Let’s face it – kids have short attention spans. The key to a successful countryside trip? Keep their hands busy and minds engaged.
With this in mind and to help get you started, here is a selection of fabulous days out from our friends at the Woodland Trust, National Trust and to begin with, Forestry England.
Join a new forest adventure as the much-loved character Stick Man, based on the beautiful picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, returns to Forestry England sites this year.
26 forests are hosting specially designed Stick Man activity trails, where you can follow the beloved character on his journey back to the family tree. Along the way, young adventurers will discover nine interactive activity panels and six spotter panels, offering hands-on experiences from building with sticks to learning about forest wildlife, birds, and nests.
To make the adventure even more special, you can purchase a £4 activity pack. The pack includes materials to create their own Stick Man and a special passport system. Your explorers can collect stamps along the trail, filling in their adventure passports as they complete each exciting challenge.
The passport system encourages children to explore every part of the trail, creating a sense of achievement as they collect stamps and discover new aspects of forest life at each stopping point. This hands-on approach makes learning about nature engaging and memorable for young adventurers.

Simple ways to inspire a love of reading
Life with toddlers and preschoolers is full of energy, questions, and surprises—from snack requests to spontaneous dance parties. But within the everyday chaos lies a special chance to nurture something magical: a love of books.
Reading together isn’t just about letters and sounds. It’s about snuggles, stories, and sparking imagination. Here are some easy ways to help your little one fall head over heels for books—and start a lifelong reading adventure!
Make it a daily ritual
Children thrive on routine, so set aside a special time each day to read together. Whether it’s a cosy bedtime story or a mid-morning cuddle with a book, consistency helps build the habit—and the bond.
Let them take the lead
Giving your child a say in what you read makes it more exciting for them. Even if they choose the same book for the tenth time, their growing confidence and familiarity with the story are part of the magic.
Create a reading nook
Designate a cosy spot just for books—add some soft cushions, good lighting, and a couple of healthy snacks. A welcoming space makes reading feel like a treat, not a task.
Talk about what you read
Pause to ask questions or chat about the pictures. “What do you think will happen next?” or “How do you think she feels?” encourages curiosity and conversation.
