crown in hand. The club’s history can be traced back to March 7, 2000, when a group of basketball lovers in Bizkaia, located in the heart of the Basque Country of Spain, created a club for the local fans to cheer for. Bilbao Basket Berri, as the team was known then, started from the bottom later in 2000, but with dedicated leadership and passionate fans, took the fast track up the ladder.

Star Turn Kostas Vasileiadis

EUROCUP FINAL 2013

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

A fearless shooter and a favorite among Uxue Bilbao Basket fans, small forward Kostas Vasileiadis arrives at the very top of his game to the first international club final of his 13-year pro career. Born in Thessaloniki and raised at Greek powerhouse PAOK, Vasileiadis showcased his scoring skills early. He made his Euroleague debut as a 16-year-old with PAOK in 2000. By age 20, Vasileiadis was already averaging 13.9 points for PAOK in the 2004-05 Eurocup. He went on to join Unicaja Malaga of Spain and reach the Final Four in 2007, then played the following Euroleague season at Olympiacos Piraeus. After a year split between PAOK and Montegranaro of Italy, Vasileiadis returned to Spain in 2009 and has played there ever since, joining Bilbao in the summer of 2010. Vasileiadis helped Bilbao make the 2011 Spanish League finals and the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague playoffs, but his role became vital this season as the team shrugged off two previous semifinals defeats to reach the Eurocup title game. Among his heroics on the way to Charleroi, Vasileiadis forced overtime in the season opener against Buducnost Voli Podgorica by scoring a game-tying shot off his own missed free throw, and then helped win it with 2 three-pointers in the extra session. Later, after Bilbao lost its first two games of the Last 16, he buried a game-winning three-pointer in Valencia to keep the season alive. His overall numbers were as good as his clutch shooting as Vasileiadis arrived to the final as the Eurocup’s second-best three-point and fourth-best free throw shooter this season. At age 29, his inspired performance has earned Vasileiadis a place on the 2012-13 All-Eurocup First Team. Now, with a Eurocup title at stake, everyone from his coaches to his teammates to fans and media know that with the game on the line, Vasileiadis will be ready to deliver for Bilbao.

The Coach Fotis Katsikaris

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

As he and his club prepare to play their first-ever international trophy final in Charleroi, Fotis Katsikaris offers the perfect combination of background, experience and coaching talent to make history for Uxue Bilbao Basket. In his first two full seasons with Bilbao, Katsikaris took the club to new heights by reaching both the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs and the Spanish League playoff finals. Now, he and Bilbao want to lift the club’s first trophy and, in so doing, return to the Euroleague. Katsikaris, a former point guard who was once the youngest pro in Greek League history, joined the coaching staff of the club where he played most of his career, AEK Athens, in 1998. There he proceeded to learn from legends like Dusan Ivkovic, Dragan Sakota and Kostas Politis before becoming the head coach himself in 2003. Katsikaris led AEK to the Euroleague Top 16 and the Greek League finals in 2005, prior to leaving for Dynamo St. Petersburg. After a strong season in Russia, Katsikaris was hired by Valencia of Spain in late 2006, soon helping that team escape a difficult situation to reach the Spanish League playoffs. Already, Katsikaris had become known for getting the most out of his players. In 2008, Katsikaris took Valencia all the way to the Eurocup Final Eight, losing against eventual champion DKV Joventut. Midway through the 2009-10 season, Katsikaris took over the bench at Bilbao and repeated the team’s best result to date by making it to the Eurocup semifinals. In his first full season in Bilbao, Katsikaris took the club all the way to the 2010-11 Spanish League finals, qualifying the team to the Euroleague for the first time ever. Once on the continent’s biggest stage again, Katsikaris guided Bilbao to unexpected status with a place in the 2011-12 Euroleague playoffs, a remarkable accomplishment for a Euroleague newcomer. Now, at age 45, Katsikaris seeks to take Bilbao another step higher, his only goal being to see the “men in black” walk away from the Eurocup Final with the club’s first trophy ever.

In 2002, Lokomotiv nearly shocked Europe when Eurelijus Zukauskas and Goran Jagodnik helped guide the team within a few baskets of winning the Korac Cup. By reaching the Russian League semifinals for the second year in a row and then beating Saratov for third place, teams across Europe were forced to take notice. In 2003, Lokomotiv changed homes; it left Mineralnye Vody and moved to the city of Rostov, but continued to climb the charts in all competitions. However, despite the best efforts of Jarod Stevenson and Igor Kudelin, Lokomotiv lost in the closing seconds 75-74 to CSU Asesoft in the final in Romania. in the quarterfinals to eventual champions DKV Joventut. Another turning point in Lokomotiv’s history came in 2009, when the club moved its home to Krasnodar and chose the name Lokomotiv Kuban. Krasnodar had a local team that competed successfully in the Soviet League in the 1970s and ‘80s, but was not in the top Russian League in the new millennium. To begin the Lokomotiv Kuban era, management reached out to Saso Filipovski to coach. Led by veterans Pero Antic and Aleksandar Capin, Lokomotiv was second in Russia midway through the regular season. But a losing streak in the FIBA EuroChallenge sent the team into a tailspin. Kestutis Kemzura took over as head coach and James Gist and Gerald Green were signed in place of Antic and Capin. After finishing in fifth place on a tiebreaker to Dynamo Moscow, the teams met in an exciting Russian League quarterfinal series that went the distance before Dynamo eliminated Lokomotiv. The 2010-11 campaign was another great one for Lokomotiv behind Jeremiah Massey, Mike Wilkinson and Lionel Chalmers. The team plowed through to the FIBA EuroChallenge to reach the title game against Krka Novo Mesto in Oostende, Belgium. Lokomotiv was once again close to a

Lokomotiv finished the Russian League regular season third and was only knocked out of the playoffs by mighty CSKA. Those results helped Lokomotiv arrive to the Eurocup for the first time last season. The club bulked up its frontline with Ali Traore and Primoz Brezec alongside Massey, while Sergey Bykov and Rod Blakney joined Chalmers in the backcourt. Lokomotiv was on track for glory after winning its Last 16 group, but eventual champion BC Khimki Moscow Region took Lokomotiv out in the quarterfinals.

EUROCUP FINAL 2013

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sometimes, basketball offers second chances. In that context, small forward Simas Jasaitis of Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar returns to Charleroi on April 13 ready to fight for his second Eurocup title. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, Jasaitis started his career with Sakalai before joining his city’s signature club, Lietuvos Rytas, as a teenager in 2001. Four years later, Jasaitis helped L. Rytas make history by winning the 2005 Eurocup title, its first continental trophy. On that memorable night, Jasaitis matched his team’s high of 16 points as L. Rytas defeated Makedonikos of Greece 78-74 at the Spiroudome in Charleroi. The following season, Jasaitis made his Euroleague debut with L. Rytas, and he has since switched clubs every summer. After Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in Israel, he moved to Tau Ceramica Vitoria of Spain and reached the 2008 Final Four. His next stops were Joventut Badalona in Spain, Galatasaray of Turkey and, after returning to L. Rytas for one season, Turk Telekom Ankara. Since arriving in Krasnodar last summer, Jasaitis is reminding fans that he remains one of the best shooters in European basketball.

The Coach Evgeny Pashutin

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Coming into his second Eurocup title game, former competition champion Evgeny Pashutin of Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar is accustomed to high-pressure situations, both as a player and a coach. The 44-year-old former point guard had a long playing career in Spartak St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow, helping the latter to reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2003. After taking his career directly from the playing court to the sidelines, Pashutin quickly showed his talent for coaching. In 2004, he directed CSKA’s team to the Euroleague’s Nike International Junior Tournament title and the following year won under-20 European Championships with the Russian national team. All the while, he remained an assistant coach at CSKA, learning on the job from legends like Dusan Ivkovic and Ettore Messina. In that role, he was integral in helping return CSKA to glory by winning Euroleague titles in 2006 and 2008, marking the club’s first such accolades in more than three decades.
