WELCOME TO 2011 FINAL FOUR Jordi Bertomeu Euroleague Basketball CEO
Welcome to Barcelona, the city that will host all basketball fans during the classic fourday encounter of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four for the second time since 2003. All guests, fans and partners are invited this weekend to enjoy one of the world’s most exciting cities to the fullest. First, count yourself privileged to witness four classic Euroleague Basketball teams – Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, Montepaschi Siena, Panathinaikos Athens and Real Madrid – as they compete to be crowned the continental champion. More than 15,000 fans, media and guests will join in the excitement, both on and off the court, as this basketball party culminates with the lifting of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague trophy on Sunday. They and millions more have followed one of the most competitive seasons, packed full of emotion, that we have seen; from the Qualifying Rounds all the way to this Final Four, fans across the globe have borne witness as 37 teams brought raw emotion to the sport of basketball. This level of competitive energy is the result of the hard work done by clubs, institutions and partners over the past decade. It is with this competitiveness and with the goal of improving every year that Euroleague Basketball wishes to bring the best basketball to fans across the globe. During this weekend we will not only be able to see some amazing basketball, but also to participate in some new off-court activities as part of Euroleague for Life, our Social Corporate Responsibility program. Euroleague for Life has been a key part of the commitment that we have made in order to bring the values of the sport of basketball to life as role models in society. During the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, players, clubs, partners and staff will be working on several offcourt activities. From a court refurbishment, with contributing partners Mondo and Gran Via 2, to a charity concert backed by Turkish Airlines, to help UNICEF build schools in Africa, fans will be able to participate in promoting basketball values of team spirit, justice, equality and hard work. In addition, our continued collaboration with Special Olympics this year will also grow with national teams from Spain, Greece, Turkey and Italy competing for a European title in the Special Olympics Final Four. In addition, we will also bring back to its birthplace the Nike International Junior Tournament, which started in Barcelona in 2003. Besides future talents of European basketball proving themselves on an international stage for the ninth consecutive spring, for the first time ever the Nike International Junior Tournament welcomes a truly special guest, Team China’s top juniors. Each year we bring fans the best of European basketball and we seek to improve and build upon the foundations that the history of this sport has given us. This growth could not be possible without the help and support of our partners who, like us, are committed to making the Turkish Airlines Euroleague a star competition in the international calendar. I wish to thank partners such as Turkish Airlines, Nike, Sportingbet, Efes Pilsener and Mondo, who contribute to the development of European basketball throughout the season. Likewise, thank you to our event partners Intersport, Jacques Les Mans, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Sony, Gatorade, and Alpha Bank, who have joined us to make the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four a true celebration. This also would not be possible without the host broadcast partners who have invested in taking the best basketball to 170 countries on all five continents. I would also like to show my gratitude to the city of Barcelona, and the Barcelona and the Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM), our partners in this event, for being able to bring the best to fans, guests and media and for contributing so much to all the off-court activities with the same enthusiasm as the on-court activities. As mayor of the city, I am pleased to welcome you to Barcelona for the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. A great sporting event that not only helps us consolidate our position on the list of cities associated with the highest level of international sports, but also highlights Barcelona’s commitment to making sports a lifestyle. The rich sports history that the city has is due to the large number of facilities, clubs and entities both public and private, most of them centennial, that are the best example of Barcelona´s link with sports. Now, with the Final Four, the city will show this long tradition and successful experience in organizing large events. The people of Barcelona have always provided maximum support to sports and I have no doubt that, again, the Final Four will have the enthusiasm and attention of the community. During these days we will enjoy the best of European basketball in Barcelona. On familiar ground
One of the most prolific clubs in European basketball history, Maccabi Tel Aviv has gone a long way to putting Israel on the world sports map. Only Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow beat Maccabi’s five European titles, and only the former has appeared in more continental title games than Maccabi’s 13. The last decade has been Maccabi’s best, with six trips to Final Fours and three of those ending in victory. Last season, Maccabi was again a force in the Euroleague, returning to the quarterfinals, but Partizan stole the homecourt advantage and reached the Final Four instead. In the aftermath, Maccabi also fell short at home, failing to lift the Israeli League trophy for just the third time since 1969. For the 2010-11 season, management sought to strengthen the team by bringing back head coach David Blatt, who had last appeared on the Maccabi sidelines in 2004, and by adding new premier players. Early optimism was shaken after a 94-78 opening-night loss at Caja Laboral, but Maccabi regained its footing by reeling off nine consecutive wins to finish with the best record of the Euroleague regular season. Highlights along the way included David Blu’s game-winning triple against Khimki Moscow Region, Sofoklis Schortsanitis’s dominance inside and blowout wins led by the stellar defense of steals leaders Chuck Eidson and Doron Perkins. The momentum ended with a road loss at Regal F.C. Barcelona at the start of the Top 16, but Maccabi surged again with three straight wins to reach the playoffs. Barcelona also won their second showdown, this time in Tel Aviv – Maccabi’s only home defeat all season – and ended Blatt’s hopes for homecourt advantage in the playoffs against Caja Laboral. It turned out not to matter. Despite dropping Game 1 of the playoffs on the road, Maccabi rallied to take Game 2 on Jeremy Pargo’s jump shot near the buzzer. At home for Game 3, Maccabi seized what proved to be a bittersweet win. Perkins suffered a season-ending injury early in the second quarter, but Pargo took charge and willed Maccabi to victory. In

TAL BURSTEIN Player Spotlight
Tal Burstein has often been overshadowed by bigger names, but he consistently made Maccabi better during one of the golden eras of his or any club in European basketball history. Burstein has now reached seven Final Fours wearing Maccabi yellow and has won three of them. After a stint last year with Fuenlabrada of Spain, Burstein is back for his 10th season in Tel Aviv. It’s no coincidence that Maccabi is back, too. Now a full-time reserve, Burstein’s role has changed, but his importance to the team’s success has not. Burstein, now 31, was a starter in his rookie season as Maccabi won the 2001 SuproLeague title. His second-quarter fastbreak slam in the final against Panathinaikos stands as Maccabi’s biggest highlight in that final. Burstein remained a full-time starter as Maccabi won Euroleague titles in 2004 and 2005, becoming the only team of the last two decades to repeat as champion. In the record-breaking 2004 final, Burstein had the only double-double – 17 points, 10 rebounds – of any finalist for the last decade and the sole one by a title-winning player this century. Subsequent injuries derailed Burstein’s career, however. He missed the first nine games of the 2006-07 season and played in just two games the following year. Although he did come off the bench to help Maccabi win its 2008 semifinal in Madrid, he was unable to play in the title game, won by CSKA Moscow. This season has marked several Euroleague milestones for Burstein: he scored his 1,000th point on opening night, pulled his 400th rebound the next game and made his 100th three-pointer in November. Victory in Barcelona would mean even bigger achievements, however, as Burstein and teammate Derrick Sharp try to become just the 12th and 13th players ever to win four continental titles, just the third and fourth to do so in the Final Four era.

How does it feel to be going to your seventh Final Four? “I never expected any of this. It was possible because I have been part of a big club and a big team like Maccabi for enough years, and I’m still here. While playing all these years, we had the luck to have some great teams, one that took the Euroleague championship twice and the SuproLeague once before that, and hopefully this year we’ll have the chance to do it again.” What is the thrill like when you win the Euroleague? “The Final Four that we won at home in front of our home fans was one of the special moments we had. After the game, we went to a big park where there were more than 100,000 fans cheering for us. It felt like a concert of one of the biggest rock bands or pop stars in the world, like U2 or Madonna. It was unforgettable, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Two years without a Final Four is a long time for Maccabi fans. Does that create pressure to return? “In any big club like ours, there is always a pressure to succeed. I think in the last decade, we made our fans feel like it’s easy to make it to the Final Four every season and they became disappointed when we didn’t. Maybe we spoiled them a bit! But after a season or two without reaching the Final Four, I think everybody understands that it’s not possible every year. The seasons are long and hard, and it’s not always possible. But every year it remains our main goal and target. And this season, it has been a success to achieve it.”

DAVID BLATT
Head Coach
Although he was a successful player at Princeton University and for a dozen years with several Israeli League teams, David Blatt may have been born to coach. Blatt’s understanding of the game and ability to communicate make him a natural coach. In fact, he began coaching girls and junior teams long before his playing career ended. He slowly climbed the coaching ladder in Israel, making a name for himself at Maccabi Tel Aviv in the early 2000s, where he served as both chief assistant to coach Pini Gershon and as head coach in his own right. This year, returning to Maccabi after a six-year coaching odyssey throughout Europe, he has again taken the Israeli powerhouse to the Final Four. As assistant to Gershon, Blatt was instrumental in molding the modern Maccabi dynasty. He helped the team recruit emerging stars Nate Huffman, Arriel McDonald, Anthony Parker and Nikola Vujcic, and orchestrated the team’s defense as it reached the 2000 Euroleague Final Four and won the 2001 SuproLeague title. Promoted to Maccabi’s head coaching job, he guided the team to the 2002 Euroleague Final Four. Gershon came back as head coach for the 2003-04 season and Blatt took up assistant duties again as Maccabi went all the
way to the Euroleague title. Then Blatt struck out in search of new challenges, starting with Dynamo St. Petersburg in Russia, where he won the 2005 FIBA Europe League. Next came a move to Benetton Treviso, where Blatt won Italian League and Italian Cup titles. During that time he was appointed the head coach of the Russian national team, leading it to the gold medal at EuroBasket 2007. After coaching Efes Pilsen in Turkey, Dynamo Moscow in Russia and Aris Thessaloniki in Greece, Blatt was offered the head coaching job again at Maccabi, where he happily returned. With his eye for talent, Blatt reinvented the roster by bringing in new faces and former Maccabi players, while keeping his trusted veterans. Maccabi has wowed fans with aggressive defense and exciting offense all season long. Popular with both players and fans, Blatt would earn a seat among today’s coaching aristocracy with a Euroleague championship.
MICKEY BERKOWITZ LEGEND

Widely considered to be Israel’s best player ever, Mickey Berkowitz did more than anyone to make Maccabi Tel Aviv the country’s favourite team and a force in Europe. He was the star of Maccabi’s first two Euroleague titles in 1977 and 1981 and helped the club make four other appearances in the title game. In addition, he won 19 Israeli League championships, 17 Israeli Cups and led the Israeli national team to a historic silver medal at EuroBasket 1979. In its 2008 list of the 60 greatest Israeli sporting heroes of the last 60 years, The Jerusalem Post ranked Berkowitz first, saying that he played “with a panache and excitement which summed up all that is good about Israel.”

A shooting guard, Berkowitz joined Maccabi’s senior team in 1971 at the age of 17, playing behind the biggest star at the time, Tal Brody, who helped groom him for a starting role. Five years later, Berkowitz took over as Maccabi’s top gun. In 1977, on his 23rd birthday, he scored 23 points to lead Maccabi over mighty CSKA Moscow in a Euroleague semifinal, setting up the title game against Varese. Berkowitz came up big again in that final, with 17 points in a 78-77 victory, the first of Maccabi’s five European championships. In the summer of 1979, he carried the Israeli national team to the EuroBasket final before bowing to the Soviet Union. That result, the country’s best ever, made Berkowitz a national hero. Try as opposing teams did to stop him, Berkowitz regularly topped the 30-point mark in big games – once netting 40 against Virtus Bologna. His biggest win against Bologna came in the 1981 Euroleague final in Strasbourg, France, with a game-deciding layup that is one of the most famous baskets in Israeli basketball history. Berkowitz also helped Maccabi to Euroleague finals in 1980 and 1982. After the 1987-88 season, which culminated in a second straight loss to Olimpia Milano in the Euroleague final, Berkowitz left Maccabi as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 3,588 career points in European play.

Madrid reached the Final Four the hard way, with a gutsy 66-58 victory against Power Electronics Valencia in the only door-die Game 5 of the playoffs. Defense and rebounding proved to be the difference as Madrid overcame a double-digit first-half deficit by holding Valencia to only 16 the rest of the way, while out-rebounding the visitors 45-36 – including a decisive 17-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Real Madrid is the most-crowned franchise in Euroleague history, with eight titles to its name, two more than any other club. This, however, is Madrid’s first Final Four appearance in 15 years. That long drought is motivation enough for a proud club to rise to the occasion now, but there’s another factor that’s sure to supply added stimulus for Madrid: the chance to win it all at Palau Sant Jordi, in the city of its archrival, Regal F.C. Barcelona. Real Madrid last lifted a European trophy, the ULEB Cup, in 2007, but has not conquered the Euroleague since 1995, when a team led by Arvydas Sabonis and coached by Zeljko Obradovic beat Olympiacos in the title game. Nor has the Spanish capital celebrated many national victories in recent years, as only two of Madrid’s 30 Spanish League titles have been won since 2000, while the Spanish King’s Cup has been out of its reach since 1993. A scarcity of recent championships, however, should not be confused with a lack of competitiveness. If there’s one thing Madrid has shown throughout its nearly 80-year history, it’s a willingness to battle to the finish. This season, Madrid began by playing inconsistently, but came together like a hand in a glove for its push to the Final Four. The guard tandem of Pablo Prigioni and Sergio Llull, the team’s top scorer in the Euroleague at 11.5 points per game, complemented each other with experience and flair. So did two more perimeter threats; Clay Tucker with his smooth moves and Carlos Suarez with a little of everything. In a deep frontcourt, there were young and exciting talents like Ante Tomic and Nikola Mirotic playing alongside veteran specialists like Felipe Reyes and D’or Fischer, who captured more rebounds than any other Euroleague player this season. Madrid needed resilience to overcome the abrupt departure of head coach Ettore Messina following a home defeat that ended the team’s otherwise dominant Top 16. Of the many shining stars that South America has given the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, one of the steadiest is Pablo Prigioni of Real Madrid. After debuting in the competition at age 26, Prigioni quickly found a place among the Euroleague’s all-time great point guards. One year after his arrival, Prigioni began a string of four consecutive Final Four appearances with his first Euroleague team, Tau Ceramica of Spain. During that time, he led the competition in steals, set the current singleseason record of 156 assists and was named to the All-Euroleague team twice. He now ranks second among all Euroleague players this century in total assists and steals. Real Madrid signed Prigioni in 2009 for his experience at running top teams, including bronze-medal winning Argentina at the most recent Olympic Games, a year earlier in Beijing, China. How does it feel to be back to your fifth Final Four, your first one with Real Madrid? “Huge! It’s a huge satisfaction. It is a sports success and it’s always nice to be part of a Final Four. Reaching the Final Four with such an important club as Real Madrid makes it even more important for me.” How does your previous Final Four experience help? “I don’t really think that having been in other previous Final Fours can be determinant since the moment and the rivals are completely different. We just have to try to reach the date in the best possible shape and knowing that every minute counts.” Most of your teammates are playing in their first Final Four. What advice do you have for them? “It’s not easy, but what I think is that we have to prepare this game well, thinking that we are going to play a very important one, only that. We must have a lot of concentration and responsibility.” Only two Final Four players are older than you. What advantage does age give you? “Maybe the fact of being a veteran player and having more experience than other players in this kind of events can calm you down a little, but given my personality, I really don’t know whether that will happen or not! What no one can question is that experience helps and it helps you look at these events from another perspective.” 25

EMANUELE MOLIN Head Coach
For most of his more than 30-year career, Real Madrid head coach Emanuele Molin has been a right-hand man and a back-up on the bench as opposed to a seeker of the spotlight. Not anymore. Right after his long-time friend Ettore Messina stepped down as Madrid’s boss in midseason, Molin welcomed all the responsibility that was suddenly thrust upon him. After guiding the team past Power Electronics Valencia in a tough five-game playoff series, Molin returns to what is a familiar stage for him – the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four – only this time in a starring role. Although he is, technically-speaking, a Final Four rookie as a head coach, Molin has spent more time at the event than most men in his profession. In fact, this is his eighth Final Four, the first seven of which he worked as a lead assistant. He started out coaching at age 18 in his homeown of Mestre, Italy, then took over the Benetton Treviso junior team from 1985 to 1995. His brief stint as an interim head coach with Benetton in 1990
ended when he continued as an assistant to coaching greats Petar Skansi and Zeljko Obradovic, joining the latter at the 1998 Final Four. In 2000, Molin became the second in command to Messina, with whom he formed a winning tandem in three countries. In two years together at Virtus Bologna, they won one Euroleague title and were runner-up the next season. They moved to Benetton from 2002 to 2005, reaching another Euroleague title game, before taking over Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow for four seasons. In Moscow, they lifted the continental trophy two more times and finished second twice again by a total of four points. At 51 years old, one thing is sure: Molin knows what it takes to win. Three Euroleague crowns and four more titlegame appearances this century prove that much. If he can capitalize on that knowledge this weekend, Molin will also know what it takes to put a giant of world basketball, Real Madrid, back on the mountaintop.

Among the most influential basketball players of his generation, Clifford Luyk was honored by Euroleague Basketball in 2008 as one of the 50 greatest contributors to the first half-century of European club competitions. A solid center with an unstoppable hook shot, Luyk played a key role in making Real Madrid the kings of European basketball from 1962 to 1978, when six of the club’s record of eight Euroleague titles were won. In addition, Luyk and Madrid won 14 Spanish League championships and 10 Spanish Cups. After obtaining Spanish citizenship in 1965, he also represented the national team in 150 international games and led the squad that won the silver medal at the 1973 European Championships, a signature event that defined the country’s basketball pedigree and earned Luyk enduring renown as one of Spain’s marquee sportsmen.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y. and a star at the University of Florida, Luyk came to Spain and fit in from the start. Along with a fellow American player, Wayne Brabender, as well as Emiliano Rodriguez, Juan Antonio Corbalan and Rafael Rullan, among others, Luyk not only had a major impact on Real Madrid’s fortunes over 16 seasons, but helped make basketball a sport of mass appeal in Spain. Luyk regaled fans with a refined gamed that featured a flawless shooting technique, especially on his driving hook shot, combined with defensive intensity and fierce rebounding. After retiring, Luyk came back to coach Real Madrid in 1991 and added to his trophy collection by leading the team to two more Spanish League titles, a King’s Cup and a Saporta Cup. His tenure ended in 1994, although he returned for an extra season in 1998-99 and rejoined the club as an advisor two years ago. With his inspirational play and service to the game, Luyk helped make Real Madrid the most successful team in European basketball history.

The most successful team in Europe’s top competition over the last three decades, Panathinaikos Athens, returns to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four after a one-year absence from the event it has dominated more than any club. With five Euroleague titles since 1996 as inspiration, Panathinaikos made it back the hard way this season, by dethroning a deep, talented and motivated defending champion, Regal F.C. Barcelona, with three straight victories despite an opening-game loss in their already-classic playoff series. In the process, the Greens proved once again that no trophy is safe as long as they are still on the floor and in the fight. With the most successful coach in European history, Zeljko Obradovic, at the head of its bench for a 12th consecutive year, the Greens start as title contenders every season, and this one was no exception. Obradovic began with a roster half-full of the kind of experience that other coaches envy, with stars Dimitris Diamantidis, Antonis Fotsis, Mike Batiste and Kostas Tsartsaris – all multiple Euroleague winners over 30 – providing veteran leadership and focus. To that core, Panathinaikos added Aleks Maric, Romain Sato, Kostas Kaimakoglou and Ian Vougioukas, players with the same hunger for success that defines the club’s character. The goal was to come together quickly enough to go far in the Euroleague, and sure enough, they have walked through a minefield to reach the Final Four. With Diamantidis pushing all the levers outside and Batiste owning the inside, the Greens won deadly Group D of the regular season, the same one that CSKA Moscow could not survive, thus ending its record eight-year Final Four run. Despite an injury that sidelined Maric, an ensemble effort complemented the team’s veterans and newcomers, with Drew Nicholas, Stratos Perperoglou and Nick Calathes making key contributions when needed. Panathinaikos then finished second in its Top 16 group after a tie-breaker, setting up its best-of-five series against Barcelona.

Kostas Tsartsaris Player Spotlight
As the longest-tenured player with the team most frequently crowned Euroleague champion this past decade, Kostas Tsartsaris has been an anchor of winning attitude for the modern dynasty called Panathinaikos. His 192 games played in the Euroleague are more than any other Panathinaikos player since the turn of the century and rank him sixth among all performers in the competition. Tsartsaris has been doing many things right at Panathinaikos for eight seasons, providing the kind of worker-bee reliability that may not grab headlines, but certainly wins games and titles. At 2.09 meters, he has the size and strength to rumble for rebounds in the paint, but can also pull out beyond the arc to drain three-pointers. Effective guarding both centers and power forwards, Tsartsaris has proven sturdy enough to log more than 3,500 minutes in Euroleague games and to pull more rebounds than all but 10 other players since 2000. Of course, he is also a champion two times over, having won the Euroleague with Panathinaikos in 2007, at home in Athens, and in 2009 in Berlin. He has also lifted eight Greek League trophies and six Greek Cups with the Greens, as well as winning a silver medal at the 2006 World Championships and gold at the 2005 European Championships for Greece. Tsartsaris started playing with his hometown team Philippos of Beroia, which vetoed his move to another Greek club, forcing him to begin his professional career at 17 far from home, in the unlikely location of Iceland, where he played for remote Grindavik in the 1997-98 season. After making his mark in the Icelandic League as a rebounder, he soon returned to Greece, first to Near East, in 1998. He moved to Peristeri for three years, making his Euroleague debut with that club, but soon landed at Panathinaikos, where he has now grown roots for nine seasons. Now a seasoned veteran at 31, Tsartsaris and several of his teammates have a new opportunity to join the short list of 39 players to have won three Euroleague titles in their careers, only 15 of whom have done so in the Final Four era.

Kostas, going to your fourth Final Four, does your excitement level stay the same? “I think that getting to the Final Four is the best a basketball player can accomplish. It’s the goal we try to achieve through the year; it’s what we are fighting for game by game. I believe that getting to this big event is what seals a huge effort, both as individuals and as a team. So I would say that although this is my fourth Final Four, I don’t think of it this way. I think of it as my first Final Four. That’s how excited I am.” What highlights do you remember most? “I remember mostly the two times that we got to Euroleague title. You cannot forget moments like those. They stick to your mind; the feelings, the fans around us. It was a big party both times. That’s why we all want to relive those moments.” You lost the first Final Four, but won titles in the next two. What have you learned about what it takes to win this event? “A Final Four is a kind of tricky tournament. In two games anything can happen. There are no favorites or outsiders in this event. What you have to do, is simple: play at your best, give your 100%, don’t be afraid of any opponent and trust your team’s strength. I believe this is how we got to win two Euroleague titles in the last four years.” 31

There are winners and then there is another category reserved for Zeljko Obradovic, the head coach with the most Euroleague titles in history, seven. To understand how dominant Obradovic has been, consider this: his next Euroleague title would double the total won by each of the four legendary coaches tied for second behind him. In just 20 years as a head coach, Obradovic’s career accomplishments are simply unparalleled. In his first season on each of their benches, he has lifted two different teams to their only Euroleague crowns and a third to its sole title in the last 30 years. His masterwork is Panathinaikos, which Obradovic has put in the pantheon of basketball’s greatest clubs with four Euroleague crowns during his first 11 seasons in Athens. Obradovic, now 51, debuted as a coach by taking the last team he played for, Partizan Belgrade, to its only European title in 1992, beating Joventut Badalona, the club he would accomplish the same feat with two years later. The next season, Obradovic moved to Real Madrid won it all again, giving him four titles in as many Final Fours, although the next year they fell short in the semifinals. Obradovic arrived at Panathinaikos in 1999 and immediately reached Final Fours in his first three
seasons, claiming two more Euroleague titles. Perhaps his greatest moment came in 2002, when Panathinaikos rallied from 14 points down in the final to defeat Kinder Bologna on its own floor. The 2006-07 season will be remembered not only for another Panathinaikos title, but for the Greens and their fans celebrating at their home court, OAKA. Two years later, they were on top again after another memorable title-game victory over CSKA Moscow in Berlin. Last season, a four-game skid in the Top 16 cost Obradovic a chance at perhaps the only accomplishment that still eludes him – defending the Euroleague crown with the same club. Now, he and the Greens are back, having dethroned defending champion Regal F.C. Barcelona in the playoffs. Should Panathinaikos prevail in at the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, Obradovic’s eighth title would make him the most-crowned person, player or coach, in elite European basketball history.

He came to Panathinaikos as a talented teenager and left 17 years later – after winning five Euroleague titles, 11 Greek League championships and eight Greek Cups – as the revered captain of the most storied team in the recent history of European basketball. Fragiskos “Frankie” Alvertis retired after the 2008-09 season with more continental titles than all but three other players in European basketball history. He was the only one among them to play his entire career in the Final Four era, which began in 1988, and he was named in 2008 as one of the 50 greatest contributors to the first half-century of European club competitions. Alvertis had one of the best perimeter shots anywhere and was a born competitor, capable of clutch performances in the biggest games. What endeared him most to fans was his natural ability as a leader, or as Panathinaikos coach Zeljko Obradovic put it, “the best captain I ever had.”

At 22, Alvertis first captured the public imagination with his shooting touch, scoring a team-high 17 points to lead the Greens over F.C. Barcelona in the 1996 Euroleague final, marking the first such title ever for a Greek club. Four years later and closer to home in Thessaloniki, Alvertis sacrificed scoring but played more minutes than any other Panathinaikos player as the Greens beat Maccabi for their second Euroleague crown. He was a double-digit scorer on the 2002 team that beat Kinder in Bologna, Italy for a third crown. By the time the Greens rolled to Euroleague championships in 2007 and 2009, Alvertis’s playing role diminished, but his leadership remained a key factor. Over the years Alvertis provided continuity and stability to the team, joining forces with dozens of high profile stars, from Panagiotis Giannakis and Nikos Galis, through Dominique Wilkins and Byron Scott to Dejan Bodiroga and Dimitris Diamantidis. Today, there is only one retired jersey hanging at OAKA arena in Athens – the number 4 worn by Frankie Alvertis.

Montepaschi Siena’s 2010-11 season has been marked by dramatic ups and downs, but with a top-notch coach, veteran roster and lots of heart, the Italian champs have overcome adversity to reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. Off-season changes – the loss of three experienced starters and the addition of six new faces – raised questions about the team’s potential this year, but when Montepaschi crushed French champs Cholet Basket on opening night with tough-as-nails defense, it became clear that the Italian squad was back in business. Behind point guard Bo McCalebb, one of the Euroleague’s top performers in the regular season, Siena won its first three games, stumbled against Fenerbahce Ulker, then bounced back by knocking off defending champ Regal F.C. Barcelona at home. From there, head coach Simone Pianigiani’s squad went on a five-game winning streak that culminated in a 29-point thrashing of FB Ulker to clinch first place in their regular season group with a game to spare.

That’s when the roller-coaster began. McCalebb was sidelined with a broken bone in his foot before the start of the Top 16, and Montepaschi opened the round with back-to-back defeats. When all seemed lost, Siena beat Partizan in Belgrade and again at home before knocking out Efes Pilsen with a key home win to secure a playoffs berth. A stunning 77-95 road win at Real Madrid in the Top 16 finale showed that Siena could not be underestimated. By then, the team’s backcourt received another blow: veteran guard Rimantas Kaukenas had to have knee surgery. Once again in the playoffs, Montepaschi flirted with disaster, losing by a staggering 48 points to Olympiacos in Game 1. But Malik Hairston came alive with a double-double in Game 2 to even the series; Marko Jaric dominated Game 3; and Hairston reemerged in Game 4 to pour in 25 points as Siena eliminated Olympiacos to secure an against-theodds ticket to the Final Four. As the first Italian club to play the sport over a century ago, Montepaschi Siena’s basketball roots run deep. For most of its history, however, the team has been on the outside looking in. Not anymore. Over the past 10 seasons, Siena has established itself as
one of the strongest clubs in Europe. What started with the 2002 Saporta Cup crown now features five Italian League titles - including the last four won consecutively, the first team to do so in 50 years - three Italian Cups, and now, a fourth Euroleague Final Four appearance. By bouncing back from near elimination several times along the way this season, Montepaschi has proven that it possesses the mental toughness necessary to outlast the competition and win one title that will make permanent its place on the world basketball map: a first Euroleague crown.

NIKOS ZISIS Player Spotlight
His nickname is “Lord of the Rings” - and with good reason. Montepaschi Siena point guard Nikos Zisis has won a title or medal in each of the last seven years: a Euroleague trophy, four national titles in three different countries, three national cups, plus European Championships gold and World Championships silver medals with Greece. Zisis comes to Barcelona for his third Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four as determined as ever to do what seems natural to him: win. This season Zisis has proven much more than an ultra-reliable substitute for Montepaschi, the same role he played in helping CSKA Moscow claim the 2008 Euroleague title. After coming off the bench throughout the regular season, he was thrust into the starting point guard role when Bo McCalebb went down with a foot injury before the Top 16. After a two-game losing streak while he and the team adapted to the change, Montepaschi won its last four Top 16 games and three of four in the playoffs to clinch a place in the Final Four. During that run, Zisis more than doubled his output from the regular season in several statistical categories, providing steady leadership, unselfish playmaking and onthe-ball defense. A gifted playmaker, Zisis knows how to get the ball to the right person at the right time. He has twice finished among the Euroleague’s top three in assists per game, tied for the second-most assists ever recorded in a Euroleague game (13) and this season cracked the competition’s career top 10 in assists. While his role for Montepaschi at the Final Four may vary with the circumstances, head coach Simone Pianigiani knows he has a born winner to call on at any, and every, moment.

What makes the Final Four special? “The Final Four is always special because the four best teams of the season thusfar have arrived and now meet for two games to decide the champion. It’s very hard, a very big fight, just to arrive. Only to do that is special. But now, having the chance to play two games and to live the dream of winning a Euroleague title, makes it more special, whether or not a team or a player has won before. You can wait years for this chance to arrive. All this makes it special.” What did you feel at the moment of becoming a Euroleague champion? “I remember it as an incredible feeling, honestly. To be Euroleague champion means that your team has done an incredible job, passing through difficult moments in the regular sason, the Top 16, the quarterfinal playoffs and then the two big games at the Final Four. It’s so big. I remember in 2008 we had the best team, and in my opinion, sometimes that makes it even harder, when everyone expects you to win it.” What would it mean to win the title with this Siena team? “It would be more than a dream. We go against three teams that have written history in European basketball. Some like Panathinaikos in the recent past, the same as Maccabi, which did some incredible things, and also Madrid in other decades. But overall, they are three of the biggest winners in basketball history. Siena is a small city, but its four Final Fours in nine years is a big achievement. To have this opportunity to win again is special. Even in our own city, I don’t think people believed that this team could make it this far. We’re excited, but we cannot be overconfident. We need to be humble as we have been until now.”

SIMONE PIANIGIANI Head Coach
With a second trip to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four in only his fifth season as a head coach, Simone Pianigiani of Montepaschi Siena has cemented his status as one of the game’s elite tacticians. The native of Siena has spent his entire coaching career with his hometown club, helping Montepaschi transform itself from an Italian League challenger into the perennial national champion and a serious Euroleague contender. Pianigiani’s achievements in Italy were recognized in 2009 when he was also named coach of the Italian national team. Pianigiani joined Montepaschi as an assistant coach in 1995 and spent many years working with the club’s youth teams. Under his leadership, those junior teams won multiple Italian titles in the early part of last decade. Along the way he learned from the big names on the sidelines for the senior team, including Fabrizio Frates, Cesare Pancotto, Phil Melillo, Ergin Ataman and Carlo Recalcati. Next, Pianigiani tasted success as an assistant coach on the teams that won the 2002 Saporta Cup and advanced to Euroleague Final Fours in 2003 and 2004. He was handed
the reins to the first team in 2006 and quickly seized the moment. His first season brought an Italian League crown, just the second in Siena’s history, and the next one ended with the club’s third trip to the Final Four and a successful defense of the Italian League trophy. During the past two seasons, while winning both the Italian League and Italian Cup, Montepaschi demonstrated Pianigiani’s emphasis on teamwork, constant hustle and stifling defense. This season, with a host of new players to integrate and injuries to overcome, Pianigiani crafted a balanced attack to go with the team’s signature defense as Montepaschi rallied from slow starts in both the Top 16 and playoffs to reach the Final Four again. Having made it through a season full of challenges, Pianigiani is on the doorstep of conquering the biggest challenge of all – the Euroleague title.
ROBERTO CHIACIG LEGEND
OFFICIAL PROGRAM
One of the most reliable European centers of his generation, Roberto Chiacig anchored the middle at Montepaschi for six years, helping the pride of Siena make a transition from middleof-the-pack Italian League team to European powerhouse. Already a big name in Italian basketball after having helped the national team win a gold medal at EuroBasket 1999, Chiacig’s renown only grew in Siena, where he proved the perfect addition to Montepaschi’s quest for trophies. Chiacig’s place in Siena’s basketball history was sealed in 2002, when he averaged a double-double in points and rebounds to lead the club to its first taste of European glory, the 2002 Saporta Cup title.

Just one year later, Chiacig helped Montepaschi reach a much higher status, its first Euroleague Final Four, also in Barcelona. With Chiacig as a double-digit scorer, Montepaschi became just the second team in European history to reach the Final Four in its very first Euroleague season. The following season, 2003-04, Chiacig and Montepaschi not only returned to the Euroleague Final Four – losing their semifinal in Tel Aviv after overtime – but also won the Italian League for the first time. In 2004, Chiacig added an Olympic silver medal for Italy to his collection. After the 2005-2006 season with Montepaschi, Chiacig decided to take on other challenges, playing in the Euroleague with Lottomatica Roma and Virtus Bologna. Now 36 years old, Chiacig continues playing and having impact in the Italian second division with Reggio Emilia. Chiacig’s legacy with Montepaschi is alive and well as the Italian champs continue a run that began with him 10 years ago – a run the team’s fans hope will culminate in the Euroleague crown he came so close to winning.

1998 The first Final Four hosted at Palau Sant Jordi, in 1998, proved a good omen for newcomers. Kinder Bologna had been a major team in Italy and Europe before that season, and had even reached a continental title game in 1981, but the title of European champion was elusive. Kinder joined two other regular season group winners, AEK of Greece and Benetton, at the Final Four, while Partizan knocked off Olympiacos and CSKA on its way to Barcelona. Kinder boasted stars like Predrag Danilovic, Zoran Savic and Antoine Rigaudeau. Partizan had Haris Brkic, Dejan Tomasevic and Predrag Drobnjak. Benetton counted on
2003 The Euroleague Final Four returned to Palau Sant Jordi in 2003 in what was a much-anticipated event, especially after local favorite F.C. Barcelona qualified. It marked the eighth time that Barcelona had been to a Final Four, but this one was different for being at home. CSKA Moscow, Benetton Treviso and Montepaschi Siena, the latter a firsttimer, were the other Final Four participants. Barcelona, coached by Svetislav Pesic, had superstars in Dejan Bodiroga, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Gregor Fucka and a young Juan Carlos Navarro. Benetton’s main players were Tyus Edney, Trajan Langdon, Jorge Garbajosa and Ricky Pittis.

Kinder downed Partizan 83-61 in the first semifinal behind 23 points from Savic. Kinder led 45-25 at halftime and never looked back. AEK edged Benetton 69-66 in the second semifinal thanks to 22 points from Anderson. With the game tied at 63-63, Prelevic drained the go-ahead three-pointer and AEK held on. Kinder rounded out a perfect weekend and became the Euroleague champion for the first time by topping AEK 58-44 in the title game, setting a defensive record for the fewest points allowed in a Euroleague final. AEK’s leading scorer had just 7 points! Rigaudeau paced the winners with 14 points and Savic was chosen the Final Four MVP. At age 38, Ettore Messina became one of the youngest head coaches to lift the trophy.
CSKA, just then re-emerging as a force in European basketball, relied on J.R. Holden, Victor Alexander and Darius Songaila. Montepaschi featured the late Alphonso Ford, Mirsad Turkcan and Michalis Kakiouzis. Barcelona edged CSKA 76-71 in the first semifinal behind 21 points from Fucka. In the second semifinal, Benetton topped Montepaschi 62-65 as Garbajosa scored 14 while Massimo Bulleri sank the go-ahead triple and free throws to win it. In the final, Barcelona celebrated its long-awaited first Euroleague title by downing Benetton 76-65. Bodiroga scored 20 points and was chosen as the Final Four MVP, only the second player so honored in consecutive seasons. Pesic became just the third person to win the continental title as both a player and a coach.

Time: 10:00 – 11:00 During the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four Barcelona, Euroleague Basketball will work together with its technical partner MONDO to refurbish a public basketball playing court in the city of Barcelona. The Aurora court, located at the Aurora street, n 26, in the Ciutat Vella neighborhood, has been closed for a couple of years due to its bad condition. Euroleague Basketball, MONDO, Gran Via 2 (a local shopping mall), and the City Council of Barcelona will work together on the court refurbishment. Within the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four an opening event will be held on May 5th from 10h to 11h. The following players will attend to the Court refurbishment:

SPECIAL OLYMPICS FINAL FOUR Place: Palau Sant Jordi Annex Court Date: Saturday, May 9th. Time: 09:00 – 12:00 During the upcoming Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, Euroleague for Life will offer the opportunity to hold a parallel Final Four in the same city and in the same venue where the Turkish Airlines Final Four will take place. However, this time, the participants will be four Special Olympics basketball teams. The four participating teams, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Spain will play their Final Four in Barcelona after qualifying through a tough classification process among various competitor teams from all over Europe. With this initiative, Euroleague Basketball wants to promote the respect, acceptance and the inclusion for players with intellectual disabilities. Because once again, Basketball is for everyone. Two former players will participate at the Awards Ceremony to be held right after the games, at the same venue.
EUROLEAGUE FOR AFRICA 40 POP CHARITY CONCERT Place: Olympic Esplanade. Date: Saturday, May 7th. Time: 20:00 – 24:00 “Euroleague for Africa 40 Pop” Charity Concert, presented by Turkish Airlines, in support of UNICEF’s educational efforts in Africa. NIKE INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR TOURNAMENT
2011 will see the ninth edition of the Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Tournament come to Barcelona, where eight teams featuring the best that Europe has to offer at the U18 level will battle it out over four days to return home as the European Junior Club Champion. Three different classification tournaments have been held around Europe this year, with the champion of each qualifying for Barcelona.

A long list of future stars that may well write their next chapter in Barcelona include returning All-Tournament Team selections Hugo Invernizzi and Livio Jean-Charles of INSEP as well as: Aleksandar Cvetkovic of Crvena Zvezda, Nenad Miljenovic, Nemanja Bezbradica and Stefan Popovski-Turanjaninof FMP, Berkay Candan of Fenerbahce Ulker Isanbul, Kaspars Vecvagars and Tauras Jogela of Zalgiris Kaunas. As in previous years there is no doubt that new players will step up and make a name for themselves.

With arguably the most balanced field in recent years, it is difficult to select the favourites to win their groups and make it to the Final. What is guaranteed is that all eight teams will be raring to go and eager to win. Thirteen great games will have been played, making the 2011 Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Tournament the perfect complement of the Final Four.
The first classification tournament was the “Torneo Citta di Roma”, organised by Stella Azzurra from December 27th29th in Rome, Italy. Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul defeated Montepaschi Siena 65-63 in the final. The second classification tournament was the “Torneig de Basquet Junior Ciutat de L’Hospitalet”, organised by CB L’Hospitalet from January 4th6th in L’Hospitalet, Spain. Regal FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 95-90 in the final. The third classification tournament was the “Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Classification Tournament Belgrade”, organised by FMP from February 18th-20th in Belgrade, Serbia. Crvena Zvezda defeated FMP 102-93 in the final. The remaining participants are FMP, KK Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje, INSEP, Team China and Zalgiris Kaunas.

The winning team will not only be crowned the kings of Europe, but in the process will book their place in the Nike Global Challenge, taking place in Portland, USA in August 2011. There they will represent Europe against select teams from the USA and the rest of the world, hoping to defeat the best and prove that Europe is basketball’s true home.

Built between 1926 and 1929, the initial idea of this “Spanish Village” was to have representations, all in one place, of architectural features of all Spanish regions: the church, the houses (humble or mansions), bars and restaurants, shops, craft workshops - all are taken from the real thing. Plaza Aragonesa, Calle del Alcalde de Móstoles, Travesia del Maestrazgo, Gradas de Santiago, Calle de Los Arcos, Plaza del Carmen are names with a lot of meaning that takes us to different places in Spain. Today the Village, as well as being a must for anyone who wants an overall view of architectonic and urban constructions in Spain, Poble Espanyol has become a meeting place for people who want to enjoy the theatre, concerts, or a good meal with friends in one of the restaurants there
This city nucleus has undergone many changes over time, which explains why you can find a sculpture from 1995 next to a 10th-century building. There buildings that have seen various alterations and which consequently contain important elements or features from several eras. In such cases, the colours we use to indicate a specific building correspond to that building’s most representative stages: e.g. the Cathedral is colour-coded blue, representing Gothic, and green, representing the 19th-20th centuries).
Park Güell

Is a garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of el Carme. It was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built in the years 1900 to 1914. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It has since been converted into a municipal garden. It can be reached by underground railway (although the stations are at a distance from the Park and at a much lower level below the hill), by city buses, or by commercial tourist buses. While entrance to the Park is free, Gaudí’s house, “la Torre Rosa,” — containing furniture that he designed — can be only visited for an entrance fee.
The Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family (Sagrada Família), Antoni Gaudí’s best known work, is still unfinished but work continues with donations from private individuals as well as public bodies. At the Sagrada Família Museum visitors can see the whole project, with Gaudí’s plans and models, and it is interesting to see how it will look when finished. In recent years, building work has advanced at a good pace, so Gaudí’s dream should soon finally be realised. He was unable to continue working on it because he died, on 10 June 1926, from injuries he received when he was knocked down by a tram at the junction between Gran Via and Carrer de Bailèn. During his lifetime, the Passion façade was completed and he left sketches for the rest of the cathedral.
The Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. It is the work of the great Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923). This Modernista building celebrated its first centenary in 2008, after a recent restoration and expansion, bright and as freshly polished as the day it first opened its doors, but with more halls for concerts and renovated and enlarged installations.
The Magic Fount
This is the result of an inspired idea from the engineer Carles Buigas (son of Gaietà Buigas, the architect of the Columbus monument), who thought of creating a new type of jet fountain, where the artistic element would be the changing shape of the water. The Magic Fountain was one of the last projects on the site of the 1929 Universal Exhibition, which included the cascades and smaller fountains which fill Avinguda de Maria Cristina. Further renovation work was carried out and music was incorporated into the visual show. In the 1990s the fountain underwent a complete overhaul and all its machinery and equipment until then very rudimentary - were modernised.

The Ramblas
La Rambla is a central street in Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A 1.2 kilometer-long tree-lined pedestrian mall between Barri Gòtic and El Raval, it connects Plaça Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. You can walk around this street in the oldest part from Barcelona with particular sightseeing like flowers, birds and human figures.
