The addition of Velothon (see page 4) plugs an event gap during winter, luring southerners from the cooler climes in what shapes as the Coast’s latest exciting big ticket event.

Triathlon remains the multisport fraternity’s lifeblood.

While Noosa Tri sells out within

two days, expect Mooloolaba to be bustling in March as it doubles as the Australian Standard Distance Triathlon Championship.

Athletes can gain double points to qualify for Team Australia and race at the ITU World Triathlon grand final to be staged at the Gold Coast in September next year.

There are some excellent supporting events leading up to the main triathlons, including two hosted by the Caloundra Tri Club in March and April, as well as the Queensland Tri Series which rolls into town in November (Kawana) and February (Caloundra).

Heading off-road is building like never before. Bushrangers Mountain Bike Club hosts some excellent rides, and there are a variety of trail runs as well as the off-road triathlon and TreX series finale at Landsborough in April.

STUNNING scenery and fine weather have laid the foundation to the Sunshine Coast’s latest drawcard.

The inaugural Velothon Sunshine Coast attracted a small field, but rider reaction has ensured it’s place on the annual sporting calendar.

“Feedback has been unbelievable. You always go into year one of an event with a little bit of nervousness about how things are going to roll out but the athletes absolutely loved the scenery and the quality of riding,” Ironman Oceania managing director Dave Beeche said.

“While we were on open roads the fact police facilitated most of the riders through intersections and there was very little traffic made for great riding conditions.”

Different from other Velothon events staged in locations around the world including Berlin, Hamburg, Stockholm and Wales, the Sunshine Coast event has three options for riders.

Seasoned cyclists can tackle three days and 361km of challenging terrain, or there is a one day event where there are 155km or 95km options.

“We are looking to retain the clubhouse in its current location in Cotton Tree and all the essential elements of the course,” Mr Beeche said.

“Riding in the peloton, that was the chat of the day and likewise in the clubhouse afterwards.”

Velothon joins a strong contingent of events which have grown in stature.

The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Running Festival expands each year and continues to evolve.

Course changes have eliminated four u-turns from the half-marathon course, making it the perfect location for those chasing fast times and personal bests.

Meanwhile the three-day

torture test that is Ultraman Australia has rapidly drawn interest after three years. Entries are coveted, and capped at 50.

Sunshine Coast athlete Richard Thompson set new world record times at this year’s event and Ultraman has quickly become a bucket-list item for long course athletes – whether competing or supporting as a crew member.

Staged on the same weekend as Ultraman is the iconic Island Charity Swim. This 11km journey starts on Mudjimba beach and swimmers round the island before heading toward Mooloolaba.

Raising money for Currimundi and Nambour special schools, the swim attracts individual and team entries.

Where to ride

Hinterland vistas to brilliant water views TERRAIN to suit all cycling standards is available on the Sunshine Coast.

Those starting near the ocean will find only a short journey into some spectacular hinterland locations, or stay next to the water and enjoy silky-smooth roads and brilliant views.

There are countless great places to ride, and we’ve compiled a list of the best locations.

Them thar hills For those seeking repeat sets, there are two hills which are highly regarded: Palmwoods Montville Rd at Palmwoods and Gyndier Dr, Tewantin.

Both have been used for successful Everesting expeditions (where riders repeatedly climb for nearly 9000m).

The Palmwoods Montville Rd climb is about 6km and has an average gradient of just below 6%.

Palmwoods is easily accessed from Maroochydore via the dual carriageway on Maroochydore Rd, or from Mooloolaba via Tanawha Tourist Drive (take Karawatha Dr, Ballinger Rd, left onto Stringybark and shortcut across via Jorl Crt).

The climb starts about 4km out of Palmwoods and has a 307m elevation gain.

At Noosa’s end of the coast, Gyndier Dr is a closed road offering 2.8km of smooth bitumen with an average gradient of 3.5%. It’s used as part of the Noosa Tri course, with the timed section known as Garmin Hill.

Coastal outlook The best oceanside ride comes via David Low Way.

PHOTO: TIM BARDSLEY-SMITH Stretching from Pacific Paradise in the south to Noosa in the north, it offers excellent bike lanes on both sides. Predominantly flat, there are some lumps around Peregian, Marcus Beach and one at Coolum.

Easily accessed via Noosa Heads at the northern end, from the south at Maroochydore David Low Way can be found via Bradman Ave and then the cycle path which goes across the river and links at Pacific Paradise.

Locals take the Ocean Dr loop at Twin Waters to avoid traffic lights through Pacific Paradise.

Criterium tracks There are two closed road loops available, one at Noosa Heads and the other at Landsborough.

Purpose-built, the Girraween Criterium Cycling Track on Eenie Creek Rd at Noosa is about 900m long and includes a short climb to

test the legs.

Skippy Park is 2km south of Landsborough on Old Landsborough Road. The 2.2km track is flat and wide, perfect for riders of all abilities.

Hinterland journeys North of Noosa has some spectacular sections of road.

Locations such as Kin Kin, Cooran, Kenilworth, Eumundi and the Mary Valley feature climbs, more like hills rather than mountains, and the roads are quiet with tranquil scenery.

Starting from Noosa, the journey from Tinbeerwah to Eumundi using Sunrise Rd and into Eumundi Range Rd is popular with some some testing hills and fast flats.

Entering the hinterland from Maroochydore and Caloundra is equally rewarding.

From Landsborough there is a

long climb up to Maleny but the journey is certainly worth it as you take in some amazing views of the Glass House Mountains – especially along Mountain View Rd past Mary Cairncross Park.

There is a good shoulder on the ascent to stay away from the traffic.

Those who enjoy a climb can veer off to Bald Knob and head through Peachester before linking up again with the Steve Irwin Way to get back to Caloundra. Alternatively take Old Gympie Rd from Landsborough to do the same loop in reverse.

For riders keen for more distance, instead of going up Bald Knob, take Commissioners Flat Rd, Kilcoy Beerwah Rd and Nonmus Rd which becomes the famed Belthorpe Range Rd. There are numerous switchbacks and it’s a tough climb...then link

back into Maleny Stanley River Rd to finish the legs.

Another favourite trek among the locals is the range, which extends from Maleny and passes through Montville and Mapleton down into Nambour.

GROUP RIDES

Mooloolaba Saturday, 6am: The Grind leaves from in front of The Coffee Club. It’s the ultimate battle of man and machine, traditionally an easy roll south but the speed ramps up on the return journey.

At the same time leaving from Giant Sunshine Coast is a social 90-minute, no-drop ride before returning for a well earned coffee.

Sunday, 6am: The ‘little sister or brother’ of the Saturday Grind.

Comfortable pace north to Peregian and fast back.

Wednesday, 6am: Giant Sunshine Coast shop ride, suits

riders of all abilities. Leave from Giant on Brisbane Rd. Alexandra Headland Tuesday and Thursday, 5am: The Tuesday ride typically takes in the hills of Diddillibah and Ilkley, while on Thursdays is north to Coolum and Peregian. Direction depends on weather conditions.

Noosa Weekdays, 6am: Those who like it fast can join a 50km journey each morning from Noosa Bike Shop in Mary St, Noosaville (a intermediate group leaves five minutes earlier), while a slightly slower group meets at 5.30am from the lights at Sunshine Beach near the Noosa Aquatic Centre.

There is also a more social option from 6am, starting outside Raw Energy in Gympie Tce. Tuesday, 5.30am: Trilogy Cycles no drop ride from the shop at Noosa Heads to Mt Coolum and

ACCESSING the Ironman 70.3 bike course is a short journey from Maroochydore.

While the flat and smooth Sunshine Motorway is closed to cyclists (apart from race day), the second section encompassing Rosemount and Diddillibah can be ridden at any time.

Athletes can travel from Mooloolaba via Aerodrome Rd through Maroochydore, and then take Maroochydore Rd or Bradman Ave from

Maroochydore.

For those who don’t want to ride, parking is available on the course.

Parking spots are found in front of the Diddillibah Community Hall on Diddillibah Rd, while there are also positions available in Kunda Park as well as good road shoulders on Old Maroochydore Rd before getting on your bike and travelling along Eudlo Flats Rd (also part of the course).

Whether you sprint, run, walk or jog, this is an event for all ages. The 5km course races down Mooloolaba Beach down to The Spit and back, twice.

Maleny Lions Mountain View Challenge – October 15, 2017. Raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation to fund Australian research into treatments for children with cancer by participating in a scenic circuit overlooking the majestic Glass House Mountains. The main event is 12km however there is a 3km, 5km, 10km or even a 3km walk to choose for the little ones.

Noosa Superkidz Triathlon – November 4, 2017. This kids only version of the famous Noosa Triathlon is designed for ages 7-13 with short achievable distances. It’s all about participation, having fun with your friends and family while keeping fit and healthy.

Kawana Triathlon – November 19, 2017. Includes Kool Kids 7-14 years of 100m swim, 2km cycle and 500m run. Enticer for 12+ of 200m swim, 5km cycle and 2km run. There is also open water swims of 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

Noosa Summer Swim – February 3, 2018. The Junior Giants Series is a great opportunity for kids aged 8-16 years to compete in the 300m Junior Dash (8-16yrs) or 1000m Junior Giants (10-16 yrs).

Mooloolaba Mile Junior Giants – February 24-25, 2018. Part of the Mooloolaba Mile Ocean Swim World Swim Series, the Junior Giants is a great opportunity for kids aged 8-16 years to test their ocean swimming skills. There is a 300m Kids Dash for ages 8-16 or the 800m Junior Giants for ages 10-16.

Caloundra Triathlon – February 11, 2018. Features Kool Kids 7-14 years of 100m swim, 2km cycle and 500m run. Enticer for 12+ of 200m swim, 5km cycle and 2km run. There is also an open water swim of 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

Where to swim

Beaches among world’s best OPEN water swimming doesn’t get much better than Noosa or Mooloolaba.

The two main beaches offer protection from the elements and spectacular environments to hit the water.

Four events are staged on the Coast by World Series Swims for good reason.

Northerly winds can make conditions choppy, but southeasterly winds prevail for much of the year. Many swimmers opt for the wetsuit from about May to September with water temperatures averaging about 20 degrees, but rise to 24 in November and up to 27 in February.

At open beaches, it’s always best to swim between the flags.

For those keen to hone their skills in the pool rather than open water, the Coast has a range of pools scattered in various areas.

There are six 50m pools at Noosa, Nambour, Cotton Tree, Kawana, Sippy Downs and Caloundra.

Athletes of all levels swim across the bay, which is about a 2km round trip. Some get out and walk back, or get in at the Spit and swim back.

Mooloolaba, weekdays, 6.30am: Small group for short swim from Main Beach.

Kings Beach, weekdays about 6.30am: The Stunned Mullets catch some waves and undertake a short swim, no wetsuits with this crew.

Where to run

Ocean outlook or forest fun and sheltered coves.

Access is via Hastings Street, follow Park Rd around Laguna Bay headland to the car park entrance.

There are five varied tracks from the 1km Palm Grove Circuit, Tanglewood Track to reach Hell’s Gates (6.9km), the 3.4km Noosa Hill Track or the 10.8km Coastal track.

For those looking for a walk or recovery session, there are some other picturesque options.

Kondalilla National Park Named after the magnificent Kondalilla Falls, where Skene Creek drops 90m into a rainforest valley, this park is a cool mountain retreat and an important refuge for many native animals and plants.

Enjoy a picnic at Kondalilla Falls day-use area. Choose the easy 2.4km Picnic Creek Circuit, the moderate 3.2km Rock Pools Walk or the more challenging 4.6km Kondalilla Falls Circuit.

Mount Coolum Nothing is better than the view from the top of Mount Coolum on a clear day. The 208m mountain makes for a challenging trek, best done early morning or late afternoon.

The average person can complete the climb in just over half an hour, while the fitter climbers race to the top like it’s nothing.

An estimated 50,000 people climb the mountain each year and it’s easy to see why. The view at the top is amazing with 360 degree views of the coastal area, including Point Cartwright

There’s no toilet facilities at the park.

Coastal Pathway Caloundra’s Coastal Pathway is a breathtaking nine-kilometre stretch of paths, meandering

along Caloundra’s beaches from Bells Creek in the south to Point Cartwright in the north.

With sights such as a lighthouse, lakes, creeks and surf beaches cropping up along the Coastal Pathway, this scenic trail is a great reason to get out and about and explore Caloundra’s natural beauty.

From Noosa to Caloundra, there are some outstanding oceanside destinations to stretch the legs with paths that link the entire coastline.

Those in Mooloolaba don’t have far to travel to access wide paths for training. Water is available at various points, while there are also kilometre markers on the concrete.

One of the most popular routes encompasses the run over the boardwalk out to the Spit.

Heading north, and once over Alexandra Headland the journey is flat and smooth throughout Cotton Tree and into Maroochydore.

Those seeking more undulations can head south across the river. La Balsa Park offers ample parking which is about 1.5km to Point Cartwright – an excellent location for hill repeats on grass.

The path runs parallel with the beach with some challenging undulations along Pacific Blvd.

Travel north of Mooloolaba and there is ample flat terrain and high-quality paths. Good running treks start at Twin Waters to Coolum Beach, with an awesome natural canopy at the Boardwalk.

But one of the most revered spots on the Sunshine Coast is Noosa National Park.

Cooroy: Features some easy, flat trails with good signage. Check out the neighbouring forests including Ringtail, Yurol and Tuchekoi from Lake Macdonald, Tewantin or Pomona.

Parklands: New is a 3.5km green loop perfect for rookies.

While the area is well-known for its advanced terrain, this loop will be great for those cutting their off-road teeth.

Best intermediate trails Wooroi: Some impressive flowing single track which starts midway up the climb and winds

INTEREST has surged in mountain biking and the Sunshine Coast is home to some of the state’s best off-road riding.

Bushrangers MTB Club is experiencing a boom in riders aged between 30 and 50.

They have also seen more females getting in the saddle, and there is even a dedicated GoGirl chapter of the club.

“We have some awesome facilities on the Coast, we’ll soon have a 3.5km loop come online for beginners at Parklands and by end of year it will have two advanced flow trails too,” Bushrangers MTB Club secretary Michael Johns said.

“There is growth in cyclocross or gravel grinder bikes.

“Getting on your roadie style bike with the slightly bigger tyres and going for hinterland explorations through all the dirt roads is another way for roadies to get away from cars but still get their big rides in. We have about 20 members in the club who do this often.”

Only on the Sunny Coast HOME to a growing list of headline events, there are a range of quintessential Sunshine Coast races worth putting on the bucket-list.

Picturesque hinterland town Pomona will celebrate the 40th King of the Mountain Festival on July 22, 2018. While there are a range of events on the program, the highlight is a steep 4.2km, almost vertical climb, race to the top of the mountain and back.

Entrants come from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Rim and the United Kingdom, with a strong rivalry between Australia and New Zealand participants.

Keen runners will also appreciate the Mountain View Challenge.

Scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2017, at the Maleny Showgrounds, there is a half marathon (21.1km), a 10km, 5km and 3km runs and a 3km family walk.

Half marathon, 10km and 5km routes follow the edge of the Blackall Range overlooking the magnificent Glass House Mountains. Past participants have marvelled at the picturesque route and have acknowledged it as among the best in south-east Queensland.

For cyclists, the Buderim 9 is a true test of character and the legs.

Raising money for the Cerebral Palsy League and always staged on the last Sunday before Christmas, riders climb Buderim nine different ways...which includes 76km and 1786 vertical metres. That feat, typically in humid conditions, must be achieved within three hours.

Two triathlons in two days. On the Saturday is active kids from 2pm, and then the active first timers at 2.30pm. Race one (750m swim/20km bike/5km run) starts 3.30pm. On the Sunday, the race starts at 7.30am (750m swim/20km bike/5km run). The two events are combined to give an ‘Olympic’ distance time. Competitors can do one or both races.

A marathon paddling race on the Maroochy River starting upstream at the Dunethin Rock Scout Camp and travelling downstream with the out‐ going tide to finish 17km later in Eudlo Creek at the Sunshine Coast Paddlesports Club.

Includes King and Queen of the Mountain at Palmwoods on the Saturday morning, then in the afternoon a street criterium at Cotton Tree with six events. On the Sunday, there is the 110km Gran Fondo, 55km Classic, 25km Family Fondo and a free 1km family ride finishing at Cotton Tree.

Nambour Aquatic Centre will host its MS Swimathon fundraiser. Teams of at least six people are sponsored by friends, family and work colleagues to swim in a 12‐hour relay.

Two trail runs, featuring 100km and 50km events.

The 100km starts at 6am with the 50km starting an hour later at 7am. Cut‐off for the 100km is 10am Sunday morning (28 hours) and 9am for the 50 km (25 hours).

There are a number of categories available to suit all levels of experience. Riders will have a noncompetitive liaison stage between each of the timed sections. Results will be based on the total cumulative time across the stages. The lowest time in each category will be the winner. Practice available on the Saturday, February 25.

The kids only version of the famous Noosa Triathlon. Short achievable distances for kids aged 7‐13 years based on participation and fun. 1‐13 years ‐ 200m swim/5km cycle/900m run. 7‐10 years ‐ 100m swim/3km cycle/500m run. The Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon is the only triathlon specifically held for people with special needs, 100m swim/3km cycle/500m run.

Women’s open cycling criterium, and then the legends of all sports undertake a relay triathlon at Noosa Parade in a battle to find the best team.

Followed by the 5km Asics Bolt run. Afternoon finishes with open men’s cycling criterium.

Australia’s biggest triathlon, including a 1500m swim off Main Beach, 40km ride from Noosa Heads towards Cooroy and a flat and fast 10km run through Noosa Sound.

Third race of the series, involves trekking/running/walking to checkpoints which will comprise a series of multiple choice questions relating to landmarks, street signs, and other particular points of interest. You will have to navigate yourself around the coastline hills of Mooloolaba and Maroochydore within the three‐ hour race duration. Ahead of the Queensland Tri Series is the aquathlon, a Triathlon Queensland State Championship sanctioned event. The events include full distance – 2.5km run/1km swim/2.5km run, enticer – 300m swim/2km run, kool kids (10‐ 11 years) 200m swim/1km run and kool kids (7‐9 years) 100m swim/500m run. The open water swim distances include 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

Queensland Tri Series round three

The inaugural Kingfisher Bay Resort Barge2Beach is an open water swim. Up to 200 swimmers will take a barge to a location 2km off shore from the race precinct located near Enzo's At The Beach.

The drop of a drawbridge will signify the start of the race, when swimmers work their way back to the shore.

Main event is a 2km swim, 80km ride and 18km run. Saturday includes a mini aquathlon, junior triathlon and Have a Crack tri (200m swim, 8km bike, 2km run).

Caloundra Open Water Swim

Rated as one of the toughest rides on the Sunshine Coast, cover the nine hills of Buderim within three hours, covering nearly 75km and raising money for the Cerebral Palsy League.

The Noosa Summer Swim, presented by Milk & Co, is over a full weekend program offering a range of distances for every ability, from junior events to a new 5.0km marathon distance where seasoned swimmers can push their limits.

Distances include 300m, 1km, 2km, 3km on the Saturday, and then a 5km and 1.5km option on the Sunday.

Staged ahead of the Queensland Tri Series, the swim options are 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

In 2018, the program of events will expand with some new distances, held over two days at Mooloolaba Beach. Key event is one mile (1.6km), and the program now includes a 3km course.

Package entries are available to swim both. Also half mile (800m), as well as junior 300m and 800m races.

Mooloolaba Twilight 5km run on the Friday night, then on the Saturday a 1km Ocean Swim, Superkidz Triathlon and the Special Tri. Also features the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup. The Olympic‐distance triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim in the Mooloolaba bay, one‐lap 40km bike course on the Sunshine Motorway, and two‐lap 10km run course from through Alex Headland.
