Juris Doctor & Postgraduate

The JD & Postgraduate portfolio launched two new initiatives with the JD & Postgrad Welcome Lunch and the Ashurst JD Clerkship Workshop The Welcome Lunch was hosted in the second week of the semester It brought together new and returning students with faculty members to introduce or reunite with each other What we enjoyed most about this event were the candid conversations between staff and students We will be running this event in semester 2 and aim to continue helping JD and Postgraduate students to build great connections with the faculty. Our second initiative invited Ashurst early careers representatives and lawyers, all of whom graduated with a JD, to workshop their firm’s clerkship process with our JD students The event was held online to accommodate all JD students After a short presentation about Ashurst as a leading global firm, students were rotated through breakout rooms and had the opportunity to have several small group discussions with each lawyer

Career Engagement

The Career Engagement Portfolio focused on our suite of corporate and clerkship related events which aimed to develop students’ networking and application skillset whilst preparing them for a career in commercial law. The Career Engagement Portfolio introduced new initiatives including our ‘Leaders in the Law’ panel event hosted by Clayton Utz and KPMG and our brand new email series ‘Careers Connect’, which created valuable partnerships between students and employers. During May, MULS hosted our annual series of clerkship events with record high attendance across our eight clerkship presentations and Clerkship Fair Throughout all of our clerkship presentations with top tier and emerging legal sponsors, we overheard insightful conversations and the formation of genuine mentor relationships which were valuable in assisting our student cohort through the clerkship process A growing attendance across all careers events in Semester 1, 2025 is representative of Macquarie University students’ strong interest in commercial law and excitement to engage with industry professionals and sponsors

Social Justice

The Social Justice Portfolio maintained two objectives. These were to encourage people to utilise the law as a tool to create positive change and make the world a fairer and more equitable place Additionally, promoting and facilitating equitable access to opportunities within law school and the legal profession for all peoples We meet our objectives through producing immersive and educational panels, workshops and videos, as well as building communities of passionate, change-driven people. Community building is a crucial part of social justice, particularly at MULS, given that our education empowers us to advocate in ways that a lot of other people do not get the opportunities to By encouraging networking at our events, we were able to connect a diverse range of people who are all passionate about a particular issue so that they could share stories and ideas and even go on to work together Our ‘Doing Good With the Law’ Workshop, which asked ethical questions about what ‘goodness’ is, and how we can achieve it, was our first event to expand our community outreach to high school students and received really positive feedback from participants and panelists

The reimagined Cocktail Night brought a sophisticated refresh to the familiar Start of Semester 1 Drinks, featuring a collaboration between MULS and the Macquarie University Business Society, which resonated with older student cohorts Law Cruise delivered a lively atmosphere that brought all students together. Beyond social events, the portfolio also revived Social Sport participation, facilitating a platform for students to stay active and keep connected Our social and sporting events have shown the portfolio’s ability to cater across all year levels and has blended tradition with innovation to enhance student engagement
