Janell Kloosterman Principal Mullen Families: On Monday, October 3rd I had the opportunity to speak to the student body to kick off Mullen High School’s 85th Homecoming. I would like to share the words that I spoke because it is a message that holds true for the entire community.

“Mustangs we gather today to celebrate Mullen High School’s 85th. Homecoming. Without each and everyone of you Mullen High School is just a building; nothing more than brick and

mortar; nothing more than a shell.

Because of each of you this place is a school; a Lasallian school where each of you are given the opportunity to find happiness, grow in understanding, and learn. So this is what this week is about- a place that is not just a building but a home. A home where all is welcome and where we work together to make each other better. So freshmen as you wear your beanies, remember this your official welcome to our Lasallian home. The Lasallian home where you will find doors that will open you to a world that is filled with opportunity, love and respect.

Seniors, after four years, I pray that you have already found this to be a home; a place where you have been treated with love and respect and given opportunities so that you

CLOTHING DRIVE

Donation boxes are located in the Lasallian Heritage Hall. Items can be new or gently used. Neeed: Coats, hoodies, shoes, hats, scarves gloves, socks, and anything warm!

From the Counseling office What keeps us excited about our jobs is we can never tell what the day will look like or how it will shape out. We can have a student walk into our office, and they could be homeless, or we may need to counsel another student stressed about making straight A’s and worried his or her parents will be upset if that doesn’t happen.

I am Skip Zickmund, Director of Personal/Academic Counseling at Mullen, and I would like to take this opportunity to give you an overview of the Academic/Personal Counseling department at Mullen.

As Academic/Personal counselors, Kate Walker, Christan Derryberry, Annie Barocas, and I, help students thrive academically, personally and socially, and assist them in exploring their options after high school. I think the biggest misconception, without a doubt, would be that we’re just here for scheduling. All the Academic/Personal counselors at Mullen are therapeutically trained to counsel individuals.

Parental counseling and support: We can offer families strategies on parenting and helpful advice on how to connect with their child. Sometimes it is a communication barrier and sometimes we’ll recommend family therapy if there are more serious issues at home.

Individual counseling: Students can seek one-on-one help from us to discuss personal issues, such as bullying, or seek crisis counseling. We can also help students with post-grad choices and planning.

The Academic/Personal counselors follow a developed curriculum meant to meet student needs and aligned with the Mullen Grad at Grad document. We completed our 1:1 meetings with all our freshmen, we are finishing up our senior meetings and we will start sophomore meetings in a few weeks to begin their career search inventory. We will meet with juniors in December to work on an exercise that asks them do a self-reflection to help guide them in their college search processes.

INTRODUCING THE MULLEN WELLNESS SERIES

he goal of this program is to provide our parents with opportunities to grow in understanding of the challenges adolescents face daily. Through a series of relevant informational gatherings our parents and students will both become better informed and will see each other as resources for the ongoing parenting challenges they face in the 21st Century.

Mullen will host these evening gatherings throughout the academic year. The evening will be facilitated by the Pastoral Office and Guidance Department and is free to all participants. GREETINGS FROM THE ALUMNI OFFICE!

With autumn upon us and the school year in full swing we reflect upon a truly amazing Alumni Weekend celebration.

A full field of one hundred forty-four golfers took part in the 28th Annual Brother Bernard Memorial Golf Classic at Arrowhead Golf Club. The tournament raised over $50,000 for Mullen athletics. The fellowship and ethos consistent with the familial Mullen community was on full display as alumni from multiple eras competed and had a great time doing so.

Our Inaugural “Alumni Fest” featured The Mullen High School Professional Hall of Honor recognizing our alumni who have participated at the highest professional level in their sport.

In all, seven banners now hang from the rafters of the Hutchison Field House lobby. More will be added in the future as we continue this new tradition. Our “Mustang Madness” B racket Challenge winners were also honored with the Class of 1988 getting special recognition with a plaque and cake to honor their achievement. The banner unveiling ceremony was followed by live music provided by the Bella Hudson Band with games, raffle drawings and food trucks rounding out the evening’s entertainment. In celebration of the Class of 1966; for their 50th reunion, four honorary captains from ‘66 took the field before kickoff for the coin toss. Staying with tradition, our freshmen formed the “M” at halftime and sang the fight song which was followed by the crowning of this year’s Homecoming Court.

The weekend concluded with a special Alumni Mass on Sunday in the Rilko Chapel and a campus tour led by current Mullen students. The Mass capped off an incredible four days that saw hundreds of alumni engaged with the school they love. Special thanks go out to all of the volunteers who helped, through their tireless efforts and enthusiasm, to make our Alumni Weekend celebration so special!
