NEED TO KNOW Warrensburg Police Department to honor fallen heroes with blood drive An upcoming blood drive to honor fallen heroes of 9/11 will take place at from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the Warrensburg Community center. The drive is hosted by the Warrensburg police and fire departments and honors former Cpl. Michael E. Webster of the Missouri Highway Patrol. Webster was killed by a drunk driver in 1993 during a license-violation stop.

He was the 17th trooper to be killed in the line of duty since 1931, according to Missouri Highway Patrol records.

City launches new website Sept. 1st The city of Warrensburg launched a new website this month. The new site features access to city services, local government resources, electronic reporting and online applications. Donyell Wolfe with the city of Warrensburg said the old site ran off of Wordpress.

Traditionally a template blog platform, that host almost 28% of sites on the internet, according to Wordpess’ website.

Wolfe said in a phone interview the service platform wasn’t user friendly for citizens or on the back-end, as there was a ratio of only two IT employees to an organization of 150.

The new site now allows for a better and interactive user interface for the community and staff though third-party specialists based in Manhattan, Kansas.

A presentation to the City Council will be held later this month at 7 p.m. Sept.

Spotlight to host annual Family Weekend Talent Show next Friday, Sept. 16 This year Spotlight’s 18th annual Family Weekend talent show will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Union Ballrooms. UCM students can get the chance to showcase their talent at the evevnt and win up up to $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.

Registration has closed but tickets are still available for purchase at ucmo.edu/ family. Family Weekend will have other activities that include various campus open houses; Mules Golf open at 7:30 a.m.; and color run at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and more.

UCM experiencing growth in full-time Undergraduate and Transfer students

our weeks into the 2017 Fall semester, The University of Central Missouri is experiencing growth in two significant areas of enrollment: new full-time undergraduate students and transfer students.

UCM President Charles Ambrose said, “Enrollment growth among first-time undergraduates is particularly significant when considering the heavy competition for the pool of graduating high school seniors, which has been flat or down in Missouri in recent years.

“We are grateful for the hard work of our admissions and enrollment management team who do a great job explaining and showcasing UCM’s excellent value proposition,” he said.

Mike Godard, vice provost for enrollment management, said as of the end of the first week of classes, first-time undergraduate enrollment is up approximately 5 percent compared to the opening week of classes in fall 2016. The number of undergraduate transfer students have increased by approximately 3 percent over the same period.

“We’ve done a lot more personal outreach, including telephone calls and text messages,

but most importantly, we are undertaking more outreach to high schools and personally inviting students to visit UCM and meet our faculty and experience all that our campus has to offer,” Godard said.

University Director of Admissions, J.D. Gragg said emphasis of importance when recruiting is personal outreach.

“UCM is known for having a personal touch,” said Gragg. “We’ve eliminated all electronically automated e-mails, phone calls, and text messages to ensure we are making a personal connection from day one.”

Gragg also said he attributes the growth in enrollment to an increased university presence in neighboring states.

“We now have admissions representatives in both Chicago and Overland Park, as well as a representative who focuses on states such as Iowa, Nebraska, and Kentucky,” said Gragg.

“Because of this, we’ve seen our numbers from out-of-state students really grow.”

A recruiting strategy focused on out-of-state enrollment potentially provides more funding.

“With some of our new resources and another year of establishing our identity in these neighboring states, we hope to see another 5 percent increase next year,” said Gragg.

UCM health center and Western Missouri Medical Center to host ‘Mammo Days’

In our society, some could say that boobs are important. In an effort to preserve them, UCM Health Center is partnering with Western Missouri Medical Center to put on a mammogram clinic through Sept. 26-28 in honor of breast cancer awareness.

The event is open to UCM faculty, staff, spou ses, retirees and students, age 35 and older.

Office worker, Pam Bennett, is in charge of the event along with medical office coordinator, Lacey Schmidt, and physician and director, Gerianne Bliss. The three health center employees are working in conjunction to the Western Missouri Medical Center to make the event happen.

They have organized a system where patients make an appointment with WMMC and then call the health center to ensure that there will be a bus there to transport patients from the health center to the hospital.

“Lots of ladies don’t have the time to set up appointments and this makes it easier to get there and know how important mammograms are,” Bennett said.

Kerri Lewis, development specialist at WMMC, said the hospital is offering a 3D mammogram for the first time.

There is a $50 fee for the 3D mammograms.

The hospital acquired 3D mammogram machines in January 2015. A press release put out by

WMMC said the technology is proven to detect breast cancer better than traditional 2D mammography alone.

The images taken during the mammogram are assembled into a 3D study so doctors can see the breast tissue in fine detail; clearly through breast tissue that may be overlapping; or through the tissue of women with dense breasts.

According to the American Cancer Society, only two to four mammogram screenings in 1,000 lead to a diagnosis of breast cancer, however, the ACA has also estimated that 40,610 women will die from breast cancer in 2017.

This is the first time the university health center has done an event like this with the local hospital.

The health center will also be putting on Ladies Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m in the Union Ballroom Oct. 5. The event is free and is designed to educate women on the risk of breast cancer, the importance of early detection and to schedule annual screenings.

Ladies Night Out will hold prizes, massages, makeup and hair tutorials along with demonstrations on how to detect a breast lump.

DIGGING THE DEAD:

Anthropology student explores future career

Hannah Pilgrim spent a day with the dead this summer.

Pilgrim’s six-week field anthropology course took her on a field trip to the Miller Mausoleum in Holden, Missouri. She and ten other students spent a day at the mausoleum to practice mapping and surveying the land and cataloging artifacts.

Pilgrim said the mausoleum’s owner, Carl Cranfill, invited the class on a tour inside the mausoleum, where a team was removing bodies from their crypts.

“Since bones is kind of my specialty, I started talking to him about what process he was using to remove the bones – if he needed a specialized team or if he was just using the local funeral home,” she said.

Pilgrim said Cranfill noticed her interest in the subject and invited her to come back and observe another day while a team from a funeral home removed the bodies. The team showed her how they removed the cover from the coffin and scraped the back to ensure they didn’t miss any small bones and pieces.

“And then they gave me gloves and tools and said ‘Now it’s your turn,’” Pilgrim said. “So they just kind of put me feet first - jumped in and said pull stuff out.”

She said at one point she had to crawl inside a crypt to remove pieces that were stuck on the end.

“That was a little terrifying, being stuck in there, but it was definitely fun,” Pilgrim said.

She said it could be difficult at times because the coffins were too big and the bottoms would fall out.

“At one point, I think eight guys help us pull them out because they had sandwiched it in there so hard and then the dif-

ferent materials they were comprised of – wood or steel – the bottoms would come out. We had to make sure we had tarps and buckets out so we didn’t lose anything,” Pilgrim said. “At the same time trying to treat it with the most respect that we could because they’re human remains.”

The mausoleum is a two-story concrete building that holds between 100 to 150 crypts, with only half being occupied.

Cranfill had been removing bodies of his family members from the mausoleum to be cremated because he feared vandals would break into the crypts.

“There’s been a problem with vandalism,” Pilgrim said. “Because there were no locks or bars, people had gotten in there and thrown out the stain glass and ripped up the oil paintings and so he (Cranfill) was worried about people breaking in there and running off with the bones. So, he wanted to be able to keep it as a monument but at the same time protect his family in the inside.”

Pilgrim said she was a little nervous to help extract bodies from the coffins.

“I mean, growing up the way we did in Colorado on a farm; we had every animal imaginable, I’d been around dead things but I’ve never been around dead people before, to that extent,” Pilgrim said. “I was like, ‘this is what I’ve been talking about.’ What if I change my mind?”

She said some of the students were bothered by the smells, especially since there were no windows, but she enjoyed all aspects of the experience.

“Some of the stuff that we found in the crypt that were still there after so long… people had wooden dentures, eyeglasses, clothes, hat pins... there was one that had a small (stuffed) dog that was still in perfect condition in there,” Pilgrim said. ”Seeing what was left behind after all this time was really cool also.”

Pilgrim said she thinks the funeral

home expected her to be squeamish about it all, and when she wasn’t they were impressed.

“So what Carl actually did was he told me that both him and the funeral home were very impressed with how I was behaving; that I was very respectful, I wasn’t afraid to ask questions… I handled remains with as much respect as I could,” Pilgrim said. “Both him and the funeral home offered to write me a letter of recommendation for any and every school that I could want to apply for. So this opportunity definitely has the best repercussions.”

Pilgrim has a lot of aspirations for her future and said she has considered working for the police or the FBI in a forensic anthropology lab. She said her experience this summer has made her realize how much more there is to learn.

“I had a blast. I can’t wait to do more research,” she said.

Each set of remains decomposes in different ways based on what material their wrapped in and how much moisture had gotten to them. One set was buried in the twenties or thirties and when we opened the crypt all her clothes were still intact and she still had part of her hair.

“I felt like I had more questions than answers by the time I was done.” Pilgrim said. “I still want to figure out anything that I can.”

Summer faculty-led tour takes s ‘beyond the stereotype’ in the

Summertime is typically the time for work, family or basking in lost time with hometown friends, not many would go on a study abroad trip to the Middle East. Over this previous summer, 28 students and three University of Central Missouri faculty members spent two and a half weeks in Jordan and Israel.

One of the faculty members, assistant professor of Comparative Politics and International Relations, Mike Makara, had spent two and a half years in Jordan, while visiting a numerous amount of countries during his graduate studies.

“I take all of those experiences that changed my life in two and half years and scrunched them in two and a half weeks,” he said. “With the difficult civil war in Syria, it is easy for people to have the perception that the whole region is unsafe.”

Makara said the most important lesson he wanted his students to learn, is to challenge the stereotypes others might have about the region.

“If there is one general thing, it is that the world is far more complex than what we often hear about, many perceptions that we hear about the Middle East from the news, are not true of all places,” he said.

“There are elements of truth sometimes, but it is not a part of the world that needs to be feared. We are far more similar than we are different.”

The Beyond the Headlines tour is open to students of any major. The two and a half weeks were divided into eight days in Jordan: five days in Jerusalem and Israel, and three days in the West Bank, Tel Aviv.

Senior philosophy student, Kate Lynch, said that when speaking to refugees, the biggest lesson she learned was to listen up.

“They just want to be listened to, which is the most powerful thing that can happen,” she said. “The media so often ignores the details of what’s happening.”

Lynch said anyone with a genuine and active interest who wants to know more about the Middle East should go on the tour.

“Talk to the people. There are always people you can talk to and learn from,” she said. “Talk to the locals and get a sense of the culture that you are experiencing.

Make it a point to reach out and absorb what’s happening.”

George Bechthold, a junior professional pilot major, said that despite the cultural difference between America and the Middle East, the citizens there treated tourists as they would anybody else.

“There are different cultures, but as different as it actually is, we are all pretty much the same,” Bechthold said. He said students wanting to go to the Middle East next summer, should read up as much as possible, especially learning the basics of Arabic.

A.J. Majino, a junior social studies education major, said that learning about the history and going to a different country is going to make him a better teacher in the future because now he has experience with different cultures.

He said that he recommends education majors because if you’re going to connect with people from various places of the world, you need to be worldly.

“Be open-minded in an area like this,” Majino said. “People in Jordan were some of the most kind-hearted, welcoming people I have ever met.”

Tj O’Donnell, a senior criminal justice major, said that the trip helped him reach out to different communities and to more diversity, he said that they never went a single day without being welcomed.

“I’d recommend people who are not afraid to get out of their comfort zone and want to make more experiences,” O’Donnell said. “Get out there, don’t just sit around, experience as much as you can.”

A Warrensburg Project: An analysis on litter and enforcment

One evening at the end of August, I set out to collect trash on the Spirit Trail, a footpath on the south side of Warrensburg that runs along Route DD. In the process, I had four strangers stop and thank me for what I was doing. A man driving by honked and gave me a thumbs-up.

I don’t bring this up to let you know that I’m getting pats on the back. I bring it up because it is illustrative of how important having a litter-free community is to people. They identified that a problem was being addressed, and they were appreciative of it.

For those people who identified this as important, there has to be something to address this issue, something more than a random stranger carrying a trash bag – walking in a more-orless zigzag pattern, combing through tall grass and negotiating his way through grapevines, rose bushes and poison ivy that seems to just appear out of nowhere, while trying to keep sweat and sunscreen out of his eyes with his forearms like a crazy person, right?

Fortunately for those people, the answer is yes.

Chapter 11 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Warrensburg is not the most interesting thing you’ll ever read. It does, however, cover every reasonably imaginable scenario regarding garbage and trash.

It is very clear: according to the ordinance, “It shall be unlawful for any person to throw or place upon public or private property any garbage, refuse, rubbish, solid wastes or trash.”

Therefore, since littering is unlawful, and there is currently litter, the logical conclusion is that there are people acting unlawfully.

So, what happens to them?

In 2017, nothing.

According to the public records I obtained from the Warrensburg Municipal Court, zero citations were issued for littering through Aug. 30 of this year.

Part of the problem is that there doesn’t seem to be much of a penalty for violating this ordinance, at least not this year. Odds are that we’ll all get away with it.

It gets even trickier for enforcement of Chapter 11. According to the 2010 Census, Warrensburg had a population of 18,838. The city of Warrensburg employs one person to enforce not only the ordinances contained in Chapter 11 but several chapters worth of ordinances.

One person out of 18,838.

Littering is not the only way trash finds its way into areas of our city that we don’t want trash. Chapter 11 covers those as well.

“Residential refuse containers shall be leak-proof, waterproof, and fitted with a fly-tight lid and shall be properly covered at all times except when depositing refuse therein or removing the contents thereof. …,” according to the ordinance.

Lids on trashcans keep raccoons, dogs, cats and other interested animals from getting into trash and littering on our behalves. It keeps the wind from doing the same. Chapter 11 even goes into detail about what is acceptable if your trash doesn’t quite fit in your trashcan or dumpster.

It isn’t too hard to find a residential refuse container that doesn’t quite live up to the standards required by the law. Beyond that, I feel there is a potential argument over semantics.

If you go to one of the parks in the city, you will find a container that does not have a lid. In fact, you will spend more time searching for one with a lid than one without. The first word in this ordinance is “residential,” so, technically, there isn’t an infraction. But a raccoon is not going to care about the differences between a residential refuse container and a public one.

Diving deeper into Chapter 11, I learned that it is “unlawful for any person to fail to place trash or solid wastes in tied or otherwise secured bags prior to depositing such refuse in trash containers or dumpsters…”

Think about that for a second. It is illegal to throw loose trash into a dumpster. How many times have you violated this particular ordinance? I’ve done it almost daily for the last several years; I park near the dumpster at my apartment complex, and on my way inside, I’ll toss whatever I have from my vehicle into it. After a while it was something I did reflexively.

Therein lies another part of the issue: How can those willing to abide by the law do so without knowing what it is? How do we know we are doing things incorrectly if we are not ever told we are doing things incorrectly?

Warrensburg is not in terrible shape. I don’t want anyone to think that’s what I believe. We have a problem, as does every city; I actually believe that Warrensburg is in better shape than other cities in the area. That’s not a small thing.

This last weekend, a lady on Mitchell Street thanked me from her porch for removing the remnants of a fast-food meal that had ended up in her yard. For her, and for others, it isn’t about how little or how much trash is out there. It’s just that it’s there.

Even if it’s less of a problem here than in other places, it is still a problem.

Ana Dilkes sets MIAA record, earns Goalkeeper of the Week Ana Dilkes was recognized as MIAA Goalkeeper of the week following her record-setting performances against Southwest Oklahoma State and Augustana.

At the start of the season, Dilkes was tied with Truman State’s Emily Huyuck (1999-2001) for most career shut-outs with 43. She notched her recording setting shut-out Thursday against Southwest Oklahoma State.

Dilkes posted shut-outs in the Jennies 4-0 victory over Southwest Oklahoma State and in their 5-0 victory over Augustana. Over the course of the two games she accumulated 13 saves on 19 shots faced.

Jennies Volleyball climbs five spots in this week’s AVCA poll.

The Jennies secured the No. 16 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association after sweeping each of their four matches played at the South Central Classic in Oklahoma. The Jennies defeated Minnesota-Crookston, Southeastern Oklahoma, Southern Arkansas, and Southern Nazarene. This week’s rankings marks the program’s 400th straight appearance in the AVCA poll. The Jennies have been included in every poll since the program came into existence in 1986.

Jennies Soccer gets bumped up a spot in United Soccer Poll The latest United Soccer Coaches Poll has the Jennies listed at No. 4 following their back-to-back victories against Southwest Oklahoma and Augustana.

The Jens scored nine goals over the two contests and left both of their opponents scoreless. Last year’s national champion, Western Washington, retained the No. 1 spot on the chart. Columbus State improved to the No. 2 spot and Kutztown moved up to No. 3. The Jennies look to improve their standings again next week as they head to Minnesota to take on St. Cloud State Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.

Football hurdles eight spots in AFCA poll following win over Pitt State Mules football moved up eight spots in the latest American Football Coaches Association poll. They sit thirteenth in the rankings after defeating Pittsburg State. The Mules earned 401 points in the poll. Northwest Missouri remains in the No. 1 slot with 850 points. UCM is among seven teams from Super Region Three to be ranked. They will travel to Fort Hays State to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at Lewis Field Stadium.

MULES & TIGERS set to clash in battle of high-powered offenses

Week one of Mules Football was everything the Mule Nation could have hoped it would be. The offense, led by a firsttime starter at quarterback and two redshirt freshmen in the backfield, amassed a staggering 470 total yards of offense.

The only problem, so did their week two opponents.

The Fort Hays State Tigers totaled 481 yards of offense last week in their 48-7 victory over Missouri Southern. The Tigers led 41-7 entering the half following two touchdowns in the air and one on the ground by starting quarterback Jacob Mezera. Mezera completed 21-29 passes for 245 yards before being pulled from the game at the end of the third quarter.

The Mules defense should feel prepared for Mezera following their performance against Pittsburg State’s John Roderique.

Roderique ranked second in the MIAA last season in passing yards per game with 277, only behind Garret Fugate. The Mules, however, held Roderique to just 102 yards in the first half of last week’s game. Roderique left the game at halftime and was replaced by Thomas LePage.

On the offensive side of the ball, it could be in the Mules’ interest to rely on their green backfield. Although the Tigers held Missouri Southern to just 81 rushing

yards last week, their run defense finished eighth in the MIAA last season. In the last meeting between these two teams, the Mules totaled over 200 rushing yards.

Last week the Mules demonstrated that their offense has the ability to put up similar rushing numbers again this year.

Koby Wilkerson led the Mules in rushing against the Gorillas with 122 yards, fellow redshirt freshman Devante Turner finished with 64 yards and Brook Bolles ran for 61 yards.

The Mules backfield could potentially see help from a running back who competed against the Tigers last year: Xavier Wahpun. He missed the first game of the season due to injury, but according to Head Coach Jim Svoboda, Wahpun’s set to take the field again in the near future.

“I think he’ll be back soon,” Svoboda said. “I think if we would’ve pushed him he probably could’ve played (against Pittsburg State), but health is number one.”

Washpun ran for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the six games he played last season. His best performance was against the Tigers, during which he totaled 117 rushing yards and a touchdown.

While it remains a possibility, Svoboda made it clear that his return date is yet to be determined.

Kickoff time between the Mules and Tigers is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept, 7, at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, Kansas.
