NEED TO KNOW Spring government internship program accepting applications The State Government Internship Program is accepting applications for the 2018 spring semester. The program is open to all students and allows them to work with a state legislator, meet officials, attend press conferences, committee meetings and floor sessions.

Students who work full time will receive a tuition grant for six credit hours and a relocation stipend of $4000. Selections for the spring semester will be made in the fall. Internships are not limited to working at the state legislature. The deadline to apply is Oct. 20, 2017. Deadline to drop classes looms, available until Friday The last day to drop a first-half semester class is Friday, Sept. 15. Students can find enrollment and refund deadlines for

specific courses in MyCentral under the student services tab. Registration for Safe Zone workshops now open UCM’s Counseling Center is offering Safe Zone workshops for fall 2017. The workshops will give more information about how to support LGBTQIA students on campus, as well as teach participants about LGBTQIA identities, terminology and ally development. A workshop can also be made specifically for a department, office or student organization.

For students, the workshop will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 16. For faculty, staff and graduate assistants, a workshop will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Counseling Center hosts workshop on assertive communication A mental fitness workshop focusing on assertive communication needs and setting boundaries with others will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Rec Cen-

ter Classroom. The workshops are free to all students and feature a new topic each week on Mondays and Thursdays. Those attending five workshops in a year will earn credit on their experience transcript on MyCentral. The workshops are presented by the Counseling Center and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Health Center to host flu vaccination clinic today The University Health Center will host a flu vaccination clinic from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 14 on campus and from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lee’s Summit campus. Another clinic will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center East Lower Court.

Students are advised to bring their insurance cards with them. The Health Center accepts most insurances except Tricare Prime, Medicare and Medicaid. Out-ofpocket cost is $25 and can be charged to student accounts.

Photography shuttering away

The photography department at the University of Central Missouri is no longer accepting new students to be a major or minor as of fall 2017.

Thomas Mitchell, program coordinator of professional photography, said students finishing their photography major or minor will be able to complete their degree.

The program is still offering the courses in order for them to graduate.

Mitchell said he formed a committee of faculty from the art department, photography department and digital media program last spring to work on a new major in another area and college on campus to incorporate more business, video and social media branding courses. He said the administration felt they needed a completely new program with photography as a component, but not the only core study area.

The committee proposed moving photography into the art department as well as having photography courses in other departments.

Mitchell said Deborah Curtis, the provost/chief learning officer, told him over the summer that photography has a place at UCM, possibly as a core component of an art degree.

“The end of this particular major was expected at some time, though I did not anticipate it this quickly,” Mitchell said.

“There is no reason that photography courses cannot exist in several departments as part of the same or different degree programs.”

Mitchell said he believes there are two main reasons for the end of the photography major. The first is that the market is changing, and the degree needs changing.

It needs more course areas such as video, social media branding, business and more variety and skills in general.

The second reason is enrollment in the photography major has slowly declined

over the last decade. Mitchell said eight to 10 years ago, the number was about 150 to 160 majors, and since that time, it declined to less than 60. Mitchell said they are still graduating 10 or more photography students each year, but the number they enroll and graduate is not sufficient to sustain the program.

Jeffrey Murphy, assistant director of University Relations, when asked if this change had to do with budget cuts, said there are other reasons the department will be discontinued. He said it was because of the decline in enrollment, and students needing more multimedia skills, such as video.

“Photography is an important skill,” Murphy said. “Steady and growing enrollment is essential to the success of any academic program.”

There is a desire among the art faculty to have photography in their courses Mitchell said it is common in most colleges. He said he would be in favor of that because students expect to take photography going into the art program.

Representatives of the art department did not respond to interview requests.

Mitchell said another fit for some photography courses would be the communication department, which teaches video and photojournalism, uses the same equipment, and has a staff willing to work with them.

Joe Moore, program coordinator for digital media production, said a lot of photography students have been interested in video courses. He said in colleges across the country, photography is either a part of the art or digital media production program.

“I was hoping we’d get them,” Moore said.

The committee proposed making photography a fifth concentration in digital media production, but that proposal failed.

Moore said photography would have benefited the digital media production program because, especially for journal-

ism students because they need that skill.

He said many digital media students have been interested in photography courses.

“I am disappointed, but I do think it’s a good fit being in the art department,” Moore said. “I hope and pray this works.

To me, photography is an art.”

Robert Breshears, photography instructor, said although he is disappointed by the changes, he is also excited to make the photography program even better.

“Now, we have a clean slate to build a program that is more applicable to the industry,” Breshears said.

He said he believes the technology is changing fast, and this gives them the opportunity to leap from where they were to where they need to be.

Breshears said some photography students have come to him concerned about their degree, but he reassured them they will be able to graduate as normal. He said the department is focusing on them more individually.

“I think they’re disappointed, but they’re not informed,” Breshears said.

“We are at a point where we can’t provide additional information.”

Breshears and the photography department can’t give students any more information until the committee makes its final decisions. Mitchell said the committee will be discussing final decisions this fall.

Nicole Schartz, a junior photography major, said these changes in the program have made her worried about the future of photography.

She wonders since UCM won’t have the photography degree anymore if that means society is needing fewer professional photographers.

“I’m afraid,” Schartz said. “Makes me wonder if I’m in the right career... If you’re coming here to study photography and it was not an option, I think you might look somewhere else, if that’s what you want to do.”

Colin O’Brien, a junior photography minor, said his friend tried applying this year to major in photography and was told

the program no longer existed.

“Because of that,” O’Brien said, “he just decided to go to a different school.”

Luat Vu, a junior photography major, said not many schools offer a major in photography, and he is disappointed that UCM has to dismantle the program. He said students are coming to college now more focused on money and majoring in jobs that he believes are more needed in the real world.

“It kind of sucks for incoming people that want to do photography,” Vu said.

“People are here for different things... photography is really risky.”

Vu said he has enjoyed the photography program at UCM and believes the instructors are really involved with the students.

“Photography seems like what teachers love to teach,” Vu said. “They have passion.”

Mitchell said it is hard to accept the change in this department. He said the imaging market has changed, and the needs of the students have changed as well as the needs of the university.

“The photography department has always had some really great students,” Mitchell said. “Many of which have gone on to great careers.”

Vu said he believes this shut down won’t affect the amount of students coming into our school because the program has not been bringing in many new majors.

“The photography program lately has had such low numbers,” Vu said.

Mitchell said even though the department has recently had an enrollment decline, they still have outstanding students.

He said they have had great instructors with a love of photography and professional experience.

“What I hope,” Mitchell said, “is that we can find a new strong path for photography to continue in the university that benefits the most students in the best ways, which is sustainable for the university.”

Department of Communication gives digitalBURG/Muleskinner a facelift

The digitalBURG website is redesigned and revamped after the Muleskinner was put into abeyance for the fiscal year. The new website officially went live Sept. 2.

Managing Editor of the Muleskinner Jacque Flanagan started working on the site in May for a special project in the mass communications graduate program.

Flanagan had the help of Eric Newsom, an assistant professor in the communication department, when it came to coding the site.

“Back in May, I decided as part of my plan for grad school, that I wanted to do a special project. Why not do it before I even start grad school in the fall and start in May instead? So I asked Dr. Newsom if he would be interested in partially hand coding the site,” Flanagan said.

Newsom teaches classes in web design within the communication department and has also been part of conversations where the department discussed the future

of student media.

“We actually had the plans for the website in place long before the Muleskinner went into abeyance but it certainly lit a fire under us to make sure that we got it done, and we got it done right, and that it was a fully functional site for both students who were putting the newspaper together and the university community and Warrensburg community who were reading it,” Newsom said.

Flanagan and Newsom spent the next several months designing, coding and putting content on digitalBurg in order to get it ready for the fall semester.

“We worked hard to make a site that was functional, that was aesthetically pleasing, that was well-organized and was not only functional to readers, but also the Muleskinner staff,” Newsom said.

The site contains new features such as ISSUU, a digital publishing website so that there is a digital version of the paper. digitalBURG has also become a landing site for the other media outlets within the communication department. “digitalBURG is now just a cover page

for the other three sites. The site is now the conduit to Central TV, the Muleskinner, and the Beat,” Flanagan said.

The site now contains article tags for search engine optimization. For example, if a user were to search “Chuck Ambrose” or “Charles Ambrose” on the old site, only content with the exact phrasing would return in the search. The new site accounts for SEO and the Muleskinner’s need to archive. Now if you search “Chuck” anything related to “President Charles Ambrose”, “Chuck Ambrose”, “Charles Ambrose” or “UCM President Charles (or Chuck) Ambrose” articles that contain these tags will populate the search.

The communication department chair, Art Rennels said he’s pleased with the direction of the website and the Muleskinner.

“I think it’s heading in a wonderful direction, and it’s going to evolve. I do want to compliment Jacque, she’s done a wonderful job and a lot of hard work over the summer along with Dr. Newsom,” Rennels said.

Newsom said the new site takes into ac-

count all the new things the Muleskinner is doing now and anticipates doing in the future. The new site is also responsive, or readable on a mobile device and widescreen monitor.

Rennels said it’s important for the Muleskinner to have a strong web presence, especially now in the current industry.

“The Muleskinner is important, along with the skills that students learn in publishing the Muleskinner and getting it going,” Rennels said. “And clearly journalism, especially for media like newspaper, television and radio and so forth, everybody has to have a web presence and they have to have a strong web presence, so that aspect with the Muleskinner going all online, more actively, and more aesthetically appealing; that's a skill set our students need.”

As far as what readers can expect in the future, Newsom said the next two phases of the process include CentralTV and The Beat, which are the outlets for student television and radio broadcasting.

Alpha Kappa Lambda participates in annual Pigskin Passoff

Alpha Kappa Lambda’s Sigma chapter at the University of Central Missouri is participating in the annual Pigskin Passoff, a fundraising event where members of the fraternity walk from the campus of football rivals, Missouri Western back to UCM this week.

The fraternity walks in the event to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Sam Linder, the philanthropy chairman for AKL said the group is walking to educate the public by bringing awareness to the cause.

“When you have cystic fibrosis, your

lungs fill up with mucus and it gets hard to breathe and digest food, so we do the walk to raise awareness and show others what they (those with cystic fibrosis) can't do,” Linder said.

There’s three walkers a day that have been walking since Sunday and the members will switch out every day until Friday. The walkers will travel a total of 115 miles which averages to 18 miles a day. There are also drivers that pick the walkers up and drive them to and from the walking points. Walkers and drivers start the day off as early as 5 a.m. to get the miles in for the day.

Brady Bickert, a junior and first time walker for the Pigskin Passoff says the event hits close to home for him because

people close to him have had cystic fibrosis.

“We’ve had brothers who have had cystic fibrosis and I’ve also had people in my life that have been affected by it. I want to take part in it because it’s important to me,” Bickert said.

Bickert also said he’s been physically preparing for the event as well as mentally preparing for the strenuous day of walking from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Another first time walker, JD Braden, said he hasn’t been preparing too much, but he still believes the cause is important.

“This is an important event because it’s important to raise money and find out more about cystic fibrosis,” Braden said.

The fraternity is accepting online dona-

tions as well as cash donations on Thursday and Friday at a table set up in the Union Mall, outside in front of the Elliott Student Union.

“We always get online donations through alumni. They’re always supportive of it. Recent alumni have done the walk either in the past year or however many years ago, so they are all aware of what we’re doing and what it's all about,” Linder said.

UCM and Warrensburg communities participate in 6th annual Out of the Darkness walk

A mother clasps her son’s hand as she saunters to a table where beads lie. She nears the table clutching her son's hand tighter before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. On her exhale, she slowly opens her eyes and begins reading what each bead symbolizes.

White, loss of a child; red, loss of a partner or spouse; gold, loss of a parent; orange, loss of a sibling; purple, loss of a relative or friend; silver, loss of a first responder/military; green, personal struggle or attempt; blue, support the cause; teal, friends and family of someone who struggles.

Slow to pick up her beads and even slower to place them around her neck. She proceeds to add blue, then teal and hesitantly green. She looks down at her little boy and gives a faint smile before withdrawing her hand.

This was one of many poignant moments during

the sixth annual Out of Darkness walk Saturday at the University of Central Missouri campus. The walk brought 270 people, which has quadrupled in size since its start in 2011. These walkers helped to raise more than $40,000 in funds to support research for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention over the past six years.

April Roller, event coordinator and suicide prevention advocate, sought out to raise $4,000 for this year’s walk and more than doubled that by raising $8,780 from online, walk-up and bake sale donations.

“It is a very bittersweet feeling,” Roller said. “I am glad that our community is growing and we are able to reach out to help so many people, but knowing why the community is growing breaks my heart.”

As hundreds of walkers lined up to begin the walk around campus, there was a sense of love, community and support. Each family wore a T-shirt that displayed their loved one’s face, name or motto.

Each family walked in remembrance of who they lost but also to bring awareness to mental illness and end the stigma surrounding suicide. Each fam-

ily respected those around them and offered each other hugs throughout the marked path. At times families would stop to take in each family's honor beads.

“Today I am wearing green honor beads which symbolize a personal attempt,” said a participant who did not want to be named. “It took everything in me to put these on, but as I walked around the event today I noticed I was not alone. There were men, women and children who wore these beads.

Seeing everyone wearing their green beads was very reassuring to me. It’s one of the first times that I have recognized it’s OK to not be OK and seeking help does not make you weak but instead strong.”

Keynote speaker Mayor Bryan Jacobs read a proclamation for the city of Warrensburg, which stated that each second Saturday in Warrensburg Missouri would be known as Suicide Awareness Saturday.

Jacobs said to the crowd that his family has personally been affected by the strains of suicide and acknowledged April Roller and all the volunteers for all their hard work that they put into the event to make it impactful and meaning for every family.

Pleiades Visiting Writers Series awards Warrensburg community the opportunity to experience published literary works not only as they are published, but with the added benefit of interacting with the piece’s creator.

Rebecca Gayle Howell, author of “Render / An Apocalypse” and David Keplinger, author of four collections of poetry including the forthcoming “Another City” will be the writers presenting at the next event at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Gallery of Art and Design in the Art Center at the University of Central Missouri.

“This is an excellent opportunity,” said Jenny Molberg, coordinator of the Visiting Writers Series and co-editor of Pleiades magazine. “UCM students may not be able to travel to meet writers and hear their work, and it helps the literary community at UCM flourish.”

Phong Nguyen, co-editor of Pleiades, said the series is important to our rural Midwestern commity.

“The Pleiades Visiting Writers Series is especially important in a rural Midwestern community such as ours,” he said. “Without such a series, these established writers and up-an-coming writers would have no particular reason to visit Warrensburg, Missouri, and UCM.” Molberg said these writers and poets are of national acclaim, and the series provides attendees an opportunity to speak with the authors and ask them questions.

Denise Elam, a digital media production major/ digital journalism concentration, creative writing and communication studies minor, said she enjoys meeting the writers she learns about in her classes.

“What I love about the Visiting Writers Series is that typically, the works of the authors who visit campus are included in the creative writing and English curriculum at UCM,” said Elam.

The last event featured R.M. Kinder, editor emerita and founder of Pleiades, who read from

her most recent published work, “The Universe Playing Strings,” and Samuel Ligon, who read from his collection of short stories “Wonderland.”

“In my fiction for publication class, I was required to read Ligon’s ‘Wonderland’ and Kinder’s ‘The Universe Playing Strings,’” Elam said.

“After discussing both novels in class, I was able to meet the authors and ask them questions about their works that I had while reading.”

Molberg and Nguyen said these events are of extra benefit to the university’s creative writing students.

“This introduces participants to new literary work and allows students to learn about the real-world lives of writers,” Molberg said.

“One of the most important steps in the development of a writer is to dispel the idea of ‘the writer’ as a distant, almost mythical figure that exists outside of the realm of the ordinary,” Nguyen said. “By their exposure to working writers, student writers learn that they dwell within the same realm as ‘the writer’ and can simultaneously be themselves and be a working writer.”

Molberg said the biggest challenge to hosting the events is funding, especially after the recent campus budget cuts. She said events featuring two writers typically cost around $2,000, depending on the writers and the variable costs of accommodations.

“We are fortunate enough to have support from the English department, CAHSS (College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences), the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Missouri Arts Council,” she said.

The Oct. 11 event is co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning.

“I look most forward to meeting the writers, hearing their work, and seeing the students’ enthusiasm as they learn more about the literary world,” Molberg said.

Over the summer, Emma Luechtefeld spent six weeks in western Ireland digging trenches in order to find history, not just read about it.

“We excavated two trenches at Isert Kelly Castle just outside of Galway,” Luechtefeld said. “The excavation process was pretty intense, it was a lot more physical than I expected. We basically had to strip off all of the grass from both of our trenches. We found most of the really interesting artifacts in trench four, which was the latrine pit of the castle.”

Luechtefeld said a few of the artifacts found were a medieval dice from the early 1600s, cl ay pipes and pottery.

“I love tiny details and objects that I can actually hold in my hands,” she said.

Luechtefeld is a junior with a major in anthropology and history. She said she read history textbooks for fun in middle school because she was homeschooled and has always loved history.

“I didn’t have to read them, I just enjoyed them,” Luechtefeld said. She was homeschooled until she came to college.

Luechtefeld said she discovered Galway Archaeology Field School by Googling it. She said she has always loved and wanted to go to Ireland. Part of her own family background came from Scotland.

“I read a book in high school about one of the famine ships that came over from Ireland, and that really sparked my interest,” Luechtefeld said, “One of the ships was called the Genie Dodger, and it was the only ship that no one died on.”

Luechtefeld also studied abroad in London two summers ago with a study tour led by Jeff Yelton, associate professor of anthropology.

“Dr. Yelton has really encouraged all of my crazy endeavors,” She said. “I think taking the London study tour with him influenced me the most out of any class I’ve taken. It sparked my love for travel-

ing and I learned a lot about archaeology while I was there.”

Yelton said Luechtefeld is a very good student who also works as a supplementary instructor for an anthropology course in the Learning Commons. She has taken several anthropology classes during the past two years with Yelton.

“I think Emma is a great example of one of our students, she’s got a lot of enthusiasm,” Yelton said. “She is very well organized and we expect a lot out of her.”

Luechtefeldsaid she enjoys digging for history, whether it is in the ground, or through a book.

“I really like history, I really like anthropology and I really like mixing them,” she said. “I like seeing new ways to see the past, it’s just amazing to me. There are all these things that we don’t know about our past. It is like discovering a whole new path of knowledge.”

What does this mean for UCM?

UCM’s Title IX department is in a holding pattern until DeVos makes the announcement for what changes will be coming. Heather Jennings, a Title IX analyst said UCM will continue to address Title IX complaints according to the current policy and procedures.

“We will review and change them accordingly when we get further directives from the Dept. of Education. Until that time, while we wait on new regulations, our policy and procedures will remain as they are now,” Jennings said in an email.

The changes will find a way to help not only victims of sexual assault, but also students that are accused of acting violently or sexually harassing others. It is unknown when the announcement will be made, but once it is made, the department will take the new rules and decide on the best ways to implement them.

Why was Title IX created?

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, Title IX was originally created to give women the opportunities that men were given. A woman named Bernice Sandler worked with Edith Green to draft Title IX after Sandler was treated unfairly at her job. She filed 269 complaints against colleges and universities because a number of women were being replaced with men in the workplace.

There was a lot of discussion about women playing college sports during the creation of the bill, and once it was passed in 1972, there was a 600 percent increase in the number of women that were playing college sports.

What does Title IX do at UCM?

Title IX at UCM provides students with people to talk to if they are the victim of sexual misconduct. UCM has a Title IX coordinator along with a team that is there to assess the situation and help students that have become victims.

“We are very active and pro-active in helping all students and will continue to assist our students, no matter what changes come our way,” Jennings said in an email. “We are dedicated to providing resources and supports to our campus community and assisting students in their individual processes, while keeping our campus safe.”

Here are some answers: digitalBURG.com has been changed from the main news outlet site of the Muleskinner to the main portal of the University of Central Missouri’s Department of Communication’s three media platforms – Muleskinner for news, CentralTV for television and the Beat for radio. digitalBURG will be a landing page that populates content from all three of the sites for now. From the dB page, us-

ers can access Muleskinner content by directly clicking on recent stories populated or by clicking on our logo (the large red square in the top right of the site with the ‘M’).

You can now view the most recently posted content from our homepage; weekly digitally published issue to the right; upcoming events. The bottom of the homepage will be recently posted articles from the most popular categories, but currently only recent obituaries are there as we are continuously fine tuning the site.

From the home page, or any page on the site, users will be able to navigate from two menus. The main category menu (the red one) includes content categories: news, lifestyle, sports, multimedia, opinion and obituaries – plus social me-

dia. The secondary menu (the black one) includes operational categories: advertising, events, job postings, rentals and how to contact us.

When you click a content main category the page will populate all content labeled in that category chronologically, below that will be the main categories’ subcategories. For example, if you click the main ‘news’ category and scroll to the bottom there will be more specific categories that pertain to news that include UCM, national, Missouri, community and business news.

These classifications help for search engine optimization. Another aspect for SEO that we added were tags – something our previous site didn’t implement correctly. This site and our new workflow

does, which allows the site to populate related articles with similar tags and makes archiving and searching for articles easier.

Plus the site is responsive, meaning you can view all our content on any screen – phone to 72” – and anything in-between.

This accessibility opens a lot of doors for us as a newspaper. We’re no longer limited to stands, and our stands are now in everyone’s hands or pockets. We’re not just the university paper, we’re the community newspaper; take advantage of that. REVIEW: ‘The Dark Tower’ series

I read “The Gunslinger”, the first book of “The Dark Tower” series by Stephen King. I have always loved Stephen King. His vocabulary, figurative language, and imagery are amazing. After seeing the movie adaptation over the summer, I wanted to read the book.

I found the series in the James C. Kirkpatrick library by looking it up on the library website, and immediately went over to get “The Gunslinger” when the library opened. There are eight books total in the series. I’m currently on the second one.

Like a lot of books, it was almost completely different from the movie. I think the movie might have combined all

of the books instead of making it about one. The first book starts with a man named Roland who is from a different dimension, where there is a tower at the center of the universe that protects all of the different worlds and galaxies. The villain in the story, the Man in Black, wants to destroy the tower and take over all of the galaxies. Roland is a gunslinger who protects the Dark Tower from the Man in Black and other threats. He is the last gunslinger and the only one who can defeat the Man in Black.

Roland meets a boy named Jake, who mysteriously wakes up in Roland’s world,and doesn’t remember how he got there. Jake agrees to help him defeat

the Man in Black and help him save his world and many others. They’re trying to get to the Dark Tower before the Man in Black reaches it. Along the way, they get into trouble with different creatures in Roland’s world and also the Man in Black’s forces.

The movie combines all of the books together. At the start of book two, there is another evil sorcerer called the Crimson King who also wants to destroy the tower. There is also a scene in the movie where Roland is teaching Jake the Gunslinger’s Creed, whereas in the book, there is not a creed.

You can’t judge a book by its movie-both the movie and the book were equally good. There is a lot of action in

both, and Stephen King is such a good writer, his books are like movies all by themselves. The way he describes things really paints a good picture in your mind.

I love his word choice and vocabulary.

The action scenes in the book where Roland is using his guns are really suspenseful. He shoots so well that he only needs to shoot once.

Even though I’m on the second out of the eight books, it’s a lot different from other Stephen King books I have read. Stephen King has written many horror and coming-of-age stories, but I have never read a science fiction book by him. If you like adventure, action and science fiction, this series has what you’re looking for.

Dear Editor, I found the first sentence to the Sept. 7 story, UCM Health Center and Western Missouri Medical Center to Host "Mammo" Days, insensitive and insulting, both as a woman and a journalist.

To relate the second leading cause of death among women as "boobs being important in our society," completely ignores the travesty of this disease and the importance of getting preventative screenings.

The true lead is that for the first time the UCM Health Center and the local hospital are teaming together to provide convenient screenings to UCM employees and their spouses, retirees and students. In the future, when you write about breast cancer, please defer from using the word, "boobs," to reference a disease that has killed so many and tragically altered peoples' lives.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I have to disagree with your interpretation.

Let me clarify my word usage: breast, boobs, fun bags, titties or tatas – it doesn’t matter what we call them. The article was published because we felt as a staff that it was important to cover the “Mammo Days” event.

Personally, I am quite particular about language, to the point that my staff rolls their eyes at me every time I start to elaborate on what I mean because I do not want to be misunderstood.

The lede I added to the news editor’s story was intentional. Ledes should be enticing and the nut graf explanatory. The article did just what it was intended to do, and that’s to draw attention to an important cause.

Breast cancer is a very serious disease; I know from personal experience. From that I also know that not everyone handles cancer(s) in the same way. Some cry, some pray and some – like my late aunt – laugh at it.

In that same vein, our audience is just as diverse. I don’t care if readers continue reading because they see the word ‘boobs’ and giggle and read out of curiosity about why the word ‘boobs’ is in a news article, or continue reading out of frustration over the same thought.

My job is to get them to read it because it is so important.

I understand you may believe that type of language has the opposite effect and waters down the importance, but I disagree. I chose these specific words because of the stigma and sexualized connotations that surround them. The message wouldn’t have the same audience reach or impact without them.

It’s not about the word to me, it’s about the meaning.

So let’s start changing that mindset, together, as journalists.

SPORTS UPDATES: DÉJÀ VU FOR JENNIES SOCCER Strangely enough, the headlines from Jennies soccer this week were exactly the same as last week:

The Jennies win back-to-back shut outs The Jennies opened up the season by knocking off Southwest Oklahoma State 4-0 and Augustana 5-0 to complete a weekend of shut outs. This past weekend saw similar results. The Jennies posted a pair of shut outs with a 2-0 victory over St. Cloud State and a 4-0 win over Wionna State.

Ana Dilkes is named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week Dilkes was awarded MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week for the first week of the season following her performance against Southwest Oklahoma State and Augustana. The senior goalkeeper once again held two opponents scoreless and earned the honor for the second week in a row after posting six saves against Wionna State and two against St. Cloud State

Jennies Soccer is ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll Last week the Jennies trailed Western Washington, Columbus State, and Kutztown in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. While the Jennies secured a pair of shut out victories, each of the top three teams in the poll remained undefeated and notched at least one victory since the last poll. The consistent performances from the top four teams prevented any movement at the top of the poll.

13 SPORTS Mules golf examine depth at the Mule Invitational

The Mules “A” and “B” teams both finished in the top-ten in the team’s season opener at the Mules National Golf Club on Wednesday.

The tournament consisted of 20 teams, three of which belonged to UCM. The Mules entered an “A”, “B”, and “C” team in the contest, which allowed the team a rare occasion of seeing nearly its entire roster in competition at the same time.

Golf’s “B” team placed the highest of the three teams, landing in sixth place tie with Missouri Southern State after shooting 883, 43-over par. The team consisted of Sam Parrot, JD Peterson, John Bonaobra and Matt Hoeman.

the “B” team in eighth place after shooting just one more stroke over par with a score of 884.

Josh Haunty, Carter Tumminia, Taylor Woods and Eric Pahls made up the Mule’s “C” team. They placed 19th in the tournament with a score 930 90-over par.

Not only did the “B” squad play the best of three UCM teams, they also had the top preforming individual Mule. Parrott placed fifth among the 103 individual competitors at two-over par.

Allan finished just two strokes behind Parrott and tied for sixth place, JD Pederson and Ian Barnes tied for 29th place after shooting 12-over par, and Bonaobra finished in 39th at 14-over par.

The Mules next tournament will take place at the Muskogee Country Club in Muskogee, Oklahoma as the Mules take part in the NSU Men’s Golf Classic on Sept 18 and 19.

A year after injury, volleyball’s middle hitter is on pace for her best season yet

At this time last year, Kasey Hohlen’s season was thrown off track when her knee slid off its track. Hohlen’s knee dislocated for the second time in two years, costing her four weeks of the 2016 season.

Due to the injury, Hohlen played just 83 of the Jennies’ 115 sets last season. She did, however, make the most of her limited time on the court, accumulating 210 kills.

This season, health permitting, Hohlen could very well pass that number and even eclipse her personal best: 225 kills in 2015.

Now, there is a limited sample size to examine due to the fact that the Jennies are just eight games into the season, but through nearly a third of the season Hohlen has shown she is on pace to do so.

As mentioned, Hohlen played 83 sets in 2016 during which she had 210 kills. This comes out to an average of 2.53 kills per set. This year, Hohlen leads the Jennies with 88 kills over 28 sets. This team-best amount of kills averages out to 3.14 kills per set.

Now here’s where some math comes in.

If the Jennies play 115 sets again this season and Hohlen maintains 3.14 kills per set, Hohlen will have 361 kills on the season. To put that in perspective, only three Jennies in the last four seasons have had 361 or more kills.

So yes, this season could very well prove to be Hohlen’s best season yet and solidify her as the best hitter on the team. But before anyone nerdsout over the numbers, it’s important to remember that the conversation started with “health permitting”.

Will her knees give out for a third season in a row?

According to the Hohlen, it won’t be a problem. Despite some minor pain, she says her knees are healthy.

“I just have bad knees in general,” Hohlen said.

“They’re going to be sore. Sometimes you just have to push through pain, but other than that they’ve been healthy.”

If Hohlen’s self-diagnosis proves to be accurate, keep an eye out for the senior middle hitter this season. It could be a fun season to watch.
