StorySlam seeking artwork

Students can now order food from their phones. Sodexo launched a new mobile app, Tapingo, that enables people to order food on the go from any Sodexo dining venue. Tapingo accepts Central cash and dining dollars and is available on the App store and Google Play store.

UCM’s second annual StorySlam is accepting original artwork for the slam on Nov. 7. The theme is “What it is TO BE – in the 21st Century!” Submissions will be accepted until Sept. 15. Send all submissions to ucmstoryslam@gmail.com in a jpeg or png format.

Suicide prevention walk to be held on campus

The series kicked off with the topic Adjustment and Coping with Change. An interactive presentation was geared towards different transitions during a student’s life such as moving to campus and how to deal with the big change in the series first session.

Fuller-St. John explained three steps of the student’s reaction to change and how to rely on the 4-S Model; situation, self, supports, and strategies help ease student’s frustration or confusion in big or small changes.

Fuller-St. John asked the group to share responses during each slide and present answers to problems in their responses.

She pointed out negative responses to stress during change and presented a positive response for a replacement. Just before dismissal, she handed out fliers that included a list of activities to aid in handling stress and her contact information if anyone had more questions.

The Warrensburg Fire Department investigated a gas leak in the 100 block of S. College St. Wednesday, Aug. 30. The leak was caused by an unattended oven in a multi-family home.

The incident was reported and law enforcement was dispatched at 11:31 a.m., First responders arrived on scene at 11:33 a.m.

It took the fire department 20 minutes to determine the source of where the odor was coming from and identify the leak.

The area traffic was blocked off and 20 people were evacuated from the scene at 11:58 a.m. Citizens were warned to stay clear of the area, which was safe by 1:32 p.m.

Counseling Center and Student Recreation & Wellness Center promote Mental Fitness The Counseling Center decided to took initiative in providing interactive presentations after noticing a trend of issues in students.

The University of Central Missouri Counseling Center has partnered with the Student Recreation & Wellness Center to provide educational workshops for mental health throughout the fall semester. The 14-week workshop series occurs every Monday and Thursday in the Recreation & Wellness Center classroom and includes helpful information to be academically successful.

Adrianne Fuller-St. John, a center counselor, said the overall health of the student doesn’t solely depend on the physical part of the body but also the mental state of mind; together they create success for the student, the overarching goal pushing the Counseling Center to pair up with the Rec. Fuller-St.John said, “The workshop series would be more efficient in educating students who didn’t want to go through the paperwork of becoming a client at the center and recom-

Permpoon explained the various changes in the American culture compared to his native country and how hard it is to adjust to a new setting. He said he and his wife worry and stress about the future, they want to create better lives for themselves.

He said they decided to participate in the Adjustment and Coping with Change workshop to help manage the stress of change. Permpoon elaborated saying in Taiwan students are not given the tools to help relieve stress but are taught ‘the more stress someone takes on, just makes them better at having more stress.’ He said he and his wife enjoyed the workshop and plan on attending those to come.

Uncertainty still surrounds University of Central Missouri employees as to why they received direct deposit paychecks a few hours later than expected on Aug. 15.

The university changed the financial institution that handles deposits to Equity Bank at the beginning of the fiscal year, and this may be the cause of the issue, although, it hasn’t been confirmed.

Jeff Murphy, the assistant director for media relations, said most employee paychecks were likely deposited in their personal bank accounts by noon or shortly after.

“The university’s Finance and Administration personnel are continuing to work with the bank to ensure timely delivery of payroll, including reviewing UCM’s internal protocols and procedures to provide additional safeguards that will help ensure payroll processing occurs as per established guidelines,” Murphy said in an email sent to UCM employees.

Manager of Payroll Services, Janice Allred, did not respond to the issue after Muleskinner staff reached out.

OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY OUTTAGES The Technology Support Center at the University of Central Missouri sent out numerous emails regarding a major and unexpected network outage Tuesday, Aug. 29.

The outage affected all campus phones, connectivity and applications at UCM. This outage lasted from 10 to 11 a.m and was caused by a cut to the power flow of the Network Operations Center room during an unscheduled service check. The normal backup power was not engaged, and all the systems powered down immediately.

Mel Gross, the manager of TSC, informed the campus of the issue in an email and showed gratitude towards students, faculty and staff for being understanding during the incident.

“We appreciate the patience shown by the campus community as we worked to resolve today's service outage,” Gross said in a campus wide email.

Once the services were restored, they returned one after the other in a cascading fashion – first wired systems then wireless connections returned. All systems are currently up and running as normal.

Second Annual Big Idea Conference

“If you’re a student interested in any aspect of business or just entrepreneurship or you want to work for somebody else – what the speaker series does is bring back very successful alumni in the business community and have them come back and share their experience,” Barry Whitmore, Big Idea Conference sponsor said.

Integrated Business Experience, a course in the entrepreneurship program, hosted the second Big Idea conference yesterday in the Elliott Student Union.

The first program launched last August.

The conference pairs community members with student entrepreneurs.

The event is tied specifically to a 15 week IBE program. Students donate their time to a nonprofit while selling a product; all of their proceeds, once their bank loan is paid off, goes to that nonprofit.

Dr. Dan Jensen, Coordinator for the Social Enterprise program, and Dr. Mary Mccord created the Big Idea program as a set of extracurricular activities that supports entrepreneurial activity on campus

and expand the program reach to non-majors, encouraging them to get involved.

“We reach out through the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, Johnson County Development Council, and then specifically to Alumni and through the Hellsburg entrepreneurship mentoring program based in Kansas City,” Jensen said. “I have a personal network of professionals that I’ve worked with in higher education, a lot of these people are my friends, which is awesome, including my neighbor – who’s also an Alumni.”

The series is funded through the Alumni Foundation; In-Touch Solutions, a UCM alumni IT company based in Overland park which sponsors cash prizes; the Harmon College of Business dean’s office, which helps pay for food; and the Blaine Whitmore Go Big or Go Home Memorial scholarship.

“The series comes from the Blaine Whitworth Memorial fund,” Jensen said.

“Diane and Barry Whitmore are very active, they’ve set up scholarships… they donate so much time, it’s awesome.”

Barry said the reason he and his wife sponsored the series was to honor their son.

“We also do scholarships and each year we do a 5K that raises money for multiple scholarships we hand out,” Whitmore said. “One of our tenants of the foundation is entrepreneurship because that’s what our son was and how we got connected with the entrepreneur area. We’re able to give back because of Blaine’s association as a UCM graduate and entrepreneur in downtown Warrensburg.”

The program has other outlets including a student organization, College Entrepreneur Organization or CEOs for short, that launched last year and meets in the Start Up Center located on the south end of Missouri St., in front of the library.

There’s also a business pitch competitions in April with a first place prize of $3,000, $1,500 for second and $500 for third.

And the ‘Mule Pen’, an entrepreneurial fair that takes place in the Ward Edwards atrium: everyone has a booth and each student/team pitches their idea over and over again to anyone that’ll listen and those attendees have tokens to vote for their favorite idea – a combination of judge’s scores and popular vote award the winner.

“The conference is a part of our grade, so we each pick an individual item we want to sell then pitch it to each other in our teams” Jamison said. “Then we chose the top one (item) we all wanted to invest in, now we pitch it to different investors and pick the top one from there.”

Jamison said being a hospitality management major, the event could or could not pertain to her.

“It’s still a good experience to know what it’s like to start a company from the ground up and go through all the logistical steps,” she said. “I think it’s beneficial to anyone interested in having their own business at some point in time but it’s definitely challenging.”

The series is open to any business person in the community, not just entrepreneurs but also those getting started and wanting additional help. There are three sessions in the fall and three in the spring.

The next speaker series is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12.

BUDGET CUTS CONTINUES TO AFFECT CAMPUS

Budget cuts have been affecting the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies in varying ways.

Some departments have been struggling while others came out completely unscathed.

The college is made up of business and professional departments including the Department of Economics and Finance, Department of Management, aviation and the police academy. While the aviation department has been putting projects on hold, the police academy has been operating as usual.

The University of Central Missouri Aviation department has suffered from minor setbacks from the budget cuts. The program had to increase students’ flight fees that vary in price ranging from $30 to $300 by five percent for all flight training rates in order to offset the additional setbacks.

Executive Director of UCM Aviation and the Sky Haven Airport Tony Monetti said the cuts are impacting the program on a large scale.

“There are several capital projects primarily based on the UCM funding abilities such as the building of a new flight training facility. We’re also trying to get additional aircraft hangars as we expand our program, and we have to put those projects on hold for now until we receive additional contributions from donors, or the institutional

budget situation potentially may improve,” Monetti said.

The UCM Police Academy hasn’t been affected by the budget cuts since the department is self-funded. The director of the police academy, Colin Comer, said the only aspects of the academy UCM covers for them is building maintenance.

“Being self-funded here is a double-edged sword.

There are times when we think, ‘geez we wish we had the sure funding coming in so we didn’t have to worry about this or that’, but on the other hand when things like this come up, they don't affect us,” Comer said.

The police academy gets most of its revenue from student tuition and grants. Comer said the academy has been applying and receiving grants for the past four years that have helped with equipment and building projects.

There is a lot of trash in this town.

That isn’t an angry metaphor for anything. There really is a lot of trash in this town. Go out and look, anywhere.

If it’s a public space, I’ll confidently wager that you can find something that shouldn’t be there, exerting no more energy than it takes to turn your head.

One evening, back in July, my family and I went out for a walk along the southern-most stretch of Mitchell Street.

I started noticing – really noticing – the inordinate amount of trash that had accumulated there. Not throughout the vacant lots or around the couple of nearby businesses, but near the sidewalk, and, in some instances, on the sidewalk. Every day, sometimes multiple times a day, I walked by these things, around these things, stepped over these things, so accustomed to doing so that they became invisible.

The next day, I went out to see what I could do to clean up a bit. I didn’t have an agenda, nor any goals. I just wanted to clean up an area that I used frequently. I figured I’d spend a few minutes corralling some wayward bottles and cans, a few food wrappers that had gotten away from someone, and that would be that.

As it turns out, the things we’ve been wading through while going about our daily lives in this town may be a little worse than simply someone’s food and drink containers.

The very first item I picked up was a sexual enhancement device generally used by men. Nothing screams “this is a problem” as loudly as finding something like this in one’s front yard.

Pressing on, I was amazed at how quickly I filled up my trash bag. In roughly 30 minutes and a quarter of a mile, on one side of the road, sticking to the sidewalk and the ground on

either side of it that is maintained by the city, I filled a 13-gallon trash bag.

Roughly two weeks later, working within the same parameters on the same stretch of Mitchell Street, I filled another 13-gallon trash bag.

It was frustrating.

It was eye-opening.

It raised a lot of questions about something that I’d never questioned before.

It seems weird, but think about it: What happens to something when you throw it away? Where is “away”? What happens to something when you’re no longer the one in charge of what happens to it? These seem like odd questions to ask about an empty water bottle; I understand that. But ask them anyway.

Do you know? Does anyone know?

I don’t.

In the coming weeks and months, I’m going to set out in search of answers to these questions, and through a series of participatory stories through the Muleskinner/digitalBurg, I’m going to share whatever it is I might find.

I want to see what is happening now, and I want to explore possible avenues by which to improve. I want to see what needs to be done so we can have a community where we don’t have to learn to ignore the landscapes peppered with the discarded remnants of everyday life. I want to see what happens if we stop accepting that they must be so peppered.

I want to see if there is something we can do to make it possible to walk around town without stepping over a pair of pants.

Or pieces of a ceiling fan. Or walking by the same piece of trash for several days straight, because we’ve all developed the same tolerance for it being there.

At the very least, I’d like to walk across my yard without encountering someone else’s sex toy.

I’m daring to dream big.

We were placed in abeyance. A fancy word for suspension. Not a suspension-after-the-principal’s-office suspension but a suspended-in-the-air suspension or better said, Limbo.

Our “Limbo” state was brought on by higher education budgets cuts, our general operations and wages budgets were cut. Fortunately, our wages were reinstated by Provost/Chief Learning Officer Debra Curtis (insert clapping hands emoji here) in early August but our general operations funding is gone. That’s left us a paperless newspaper.

What impact does being a paperless newspaper have on us as a news outlet? I’m glad you asked – a lot, actually.

The abeyance inspired journalism faculty to launch a year-long “retooling” process, which includes a steering committee to assess the current education model of the Muleskinner and suggest improvements for the future. Part of our model is closely tied to the communication department’s digital journalism program, which allows us (editors) to work closely with students to get them real-world skill application.

Our reach goes beyond the J-program though. To give you some backstory, digitalBURG has been our community/campus online presence since 2006, before the Muleskinner was hosted on a separate platform, muleskinner.net, for UCM-related news.

Community news primarily went on digitalBURG. com. We merged in 2015 because we were already the same staff and, as a publication, our mission and demographic (UCM and the surrounding community) didn’t change, just our goal. We wanted to be the Warrensburg community go-to news platform and more impressively, we wanted to be student-ran, as we are now.

After a few years, we deemed the merge successful and have moved on to bigger picture stuff… such as creating a two-tier media outlet with digitalBURG as the main online portal to our three media outlets – news, television and radio. This is

where we are now; the past few months our new site has been under construction. digitalBURG.com will soon launch as the communication department’s main web portal for student media. The Muleskinner will have a subsite of digitalBURG and operate as the main journalism outlet. CentralTV and the Beat, the department’s outlets for television and radio, work independently from the Muleskinner and will launch their sites once construction is finished.

And for those who haven’t noticed, we haven’t let the abeyance stop us. We’re all online at digitalBURG.com, baby. Plus, we’re still publishing the paper digitally through Issuu, an established digital publishing site. Issuu allows us to share the paper via embeds and links and includes features that let us tag people in our photos – with their social media handles ¬– and embed videos into our paper. This is revolutionary Harry-Potter-kind-ofmagic folks!

You’ve got a front-row seat, so interact with us, whether it’s on Facebook or Twitter @UCMMuleskinner, sharing our articles and issue each week or contributing.

This summer Team USA played on an all-sand, 500-foot softball field in Aruba.

Redmond follows in footsteps of summer Olympians Jennies’ Softball Alexis Koop, Courtni Smith, former Jennies Infielder Ali Jo Rogers, and Head Coach Susan Anderson traveled to Aruba this past summer with some of the top talent in MIAA to take on a handful of the country’s premiere players.

Team USA experienced the beauty of Aruba: the beaches, the forests, the wildlife, and even had the opportunity to swim in a fresh-water spring. But the mesmerizing scenery came to a screeching halt when they arrived at the softball field.

While the field failed to fascinate the group of Americans in the same manner the beaches did, it did have something in common with the glamorous coastline – it was entirely made up of sand.

The baselines and batter’s box, typically formed by chalk in the States, were defined simply by lighter sand than the sand that made up the rest of the field. A massive concrete wall capped off the seemingly never-ending, 500-foot field and the bases moved on contact due to the fact that they had no stakes to secure them.

The challenges of playing on a sand field were worsened by the Aruban heat, which on multiple occasions limited each games to five innings, opposed to the usual seven.

The Jennies, however, were not discouraged

by the playing conditions. They simply made minor adjustments and enjoyed the game.

“It was different, but you just kind of had to adjust to it,” Rogers said. “Everything ended up being kind of the same. We played the game the same way. It was fun.”

After looking past the differences in playing field, it was obvious that there was also a sharp contrast between the teams. Team USA consisted of players from UCM, Southwest Baptist University, Emporia State, University of Central Oklahoma, and Missouri State University. Aruba’s team had a much more diverse age range.

They started players as young as 16-years old.

“It was amazing,” Coach Anderson said.

“Those pitchers weren’t backing down. They were like 16 (years old) going up against college-age pitchers…and they made some great plays.”

Although the competition and the field were not what they were accustomed to, the Jennies were more than satisfied with the trip. When asked about they took away from the journey, each Jennie gave the same answer: appreciation.

“It made me appreciate the game more,” Smith said. “No one is out there making those girls play.

They are just out there to play and have fun. So it was cool to give them competition, give them

games, show them what it’s like, and give them experience.”

This appreciation didn’t take long to resonate with the Jennies. Their gratitude surfaced before returning home.

Following their final game against the Aruban team, Team USA set out to make a lasting impression on their opposition. They gave the Aruban players the custom USA jerseys they wore for the trip. The catcher for the team, SBU’s Dana Graves went as far as to donate all of her catcher’s equipment to the Aruban program.

“They don’t have organized sports and they don’t have club teams,” Rogers explained. “If they want to play, there’s that one team that they get to choose to play on. They don’t have the resources we do.”

All four of UCM’s representatives admitted the trip was costly and that it was difficult to raise money to cover expenses, but each agreed that it was worth the cost and the work.

“If anyone has the opportunity, take it,” Koop stated. “It helped me realize how fortunate we are and what we have.”

The group agreed on the fact that the trip allowed them to play the sport they love while it, at the same time, introduced them to new faces and familiarize themselves with a new culture.

8 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE MULES KICKOFF THEIR SEASON

Brook Bolles will get to start as QB In honor of Jim Svoboda entering his eighth year as head coach, I decided to put together a list of eight things you should know before the Mules kickoff their season against the Pittsburg State Gorillas. Some are obvious… others may surprise you. Take a look.

Let’s get straight to the good stuff, shall we? Garrett Fugate has graduated and Brooke Bolles will be the starting QB in the season opener. Now, some of Mules Nation may be unfamiliar with Bolles. That’s understandable. He completed just 3 of 9 passing attempts and ran for 67 yards on 11 carries last season. For those who are familiar with Bolles, they might simply know him as “the guy from the Missouri Southern game”. Last October, Fugate was pulled in the third quarter at Missouri Southern after the Mules pulled out to a substantial lead. Bolles was put in the game and properly introduced himself to those in attendance. He threw a 29-yard touchdown pass and ran out the pocket for a 67-yard touchdown. So whether you simply know Bolles from the Missouri Southern game or you haven’t seen him play at all, get there early and find a spot. You won’t want to miss his debut as a starting quarterback.

2. The Mule-stable is still full of talent

Although Fugate’s time at UCM has come to a close, not everyone graduated. In fact, 28 of the players on the Mules roster have started at least one game in their career. The Mules have several returning 2016 All-MIAA players including Jaylen Zachery, Derrick Puni, Seth Hebert, Monteze Latimore, Chris Gomez, Dalainey Taala, and Dylan Albertson.

3. We’ve seen this before

Yes, the Mules are starting out this season against the same opponent as last season: Pittsburg State. Last year the Mules fell behind 13-0 early on, but found their stride and outscored the Gorillas 27-3 over the second and third quarter. They went on to win 34-27.

4. There is a Perfect sleeper pick for 2017

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as Division II fantasy football.

BUT if there were such thing, Kyrion Parker would be a perfect sleeper pick. Parker is a receiver that transferred from Riverside CC in California. When asked about new faces to watch out for, Coach Svoboda mentioned Parker and said he has “big play potential”.

5. Pittsburg State had the top offense in the MIAA in 2016

The Gorillas averaged a monstrous 481 yards per game last season.

They not only led the MIAA, but ranked 14th in the nation when it came to yards per game. Micheal Rose is a name to watch for on the Gorilla side of the ball. Rose ranked third in the MIAA last season with 73 rushing yards per game. The Gorillas also excelled in the passing game.

John Roderique ranked only behind Garret Fugate in yards per game with 27. He also threw 19 touchdown passes last season.

6. It’s Miller Time

He’s back! Austin Miller was a force to be reckoned with in 2015, snagging three interceptions, notching three and a half sacks, and leading the team with 86 tackles. In 2016? Not so much. After starting just two games Miller suffered a season-ending injury. The Mule’s season opener will be a perfect opportunity for Miller to pick up where he left off.

7. Jay-Z is number one in our hearts and number one on the charts

I am, of course, talking about the player who wears the number One for the Mules, Jaylen Zachery. And in case you’re not up to date on Jaylen Zachery’s accolades, let me catch you up. Zachery earned first team All-MIAA as both a receiver AND a return specialist. He was named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year. He accumulated a staggering 1,828 all-purpose yards last season. This marked the most by any player in the MIAA and was the fifth most in a single season in Mules history. He also tied a UCM record with two kickoff returns in a single season.

8. The Party starts way before Game time

Okay, I saved an obvious one for last. As Mules fans know, the university encourages tailgating. Designated tailgating lots will open three hours before game time and will stay until the end of halftime. The 13th annual Get The Red Out Street Fair will take place prior to the game starting at 4 p.m. on Holden St. between Clark and South streets. The event will have organizations boothes, plenty of games and inflatables for the kids.

Whatever you do before the game, don’t forget to get into the game at some point – gates open two hours before kickoff.

ARUBA, continued from page 9 “It was different, but you just kind of had to adjust to it,” Rogers said. “Everything ended up being kind of the same.

We played the game the same way. It was fun.”

After looking past the differences in playing field, it was obvious that there was also a sharp contrast between the teams. Team USA consisted of players from UCM, Southwest Baptist University, Emporia State, University of Central Oklahoma, and Missouri State University. Aruba’s team had a much more diverse age range. They started players as young as 16-years old.

“It was amazing,” Coach Anderson

said. “Those pitchers weren’t backing down. They were like 16 (years old) going up against college-age pitchers…and they made some great plays.”

Although the competition and the field were not what they were accustomed to, the Jennies were more than satisfied with the trip. When asked about they took away from the journey, each Jennie gave the same answer: appreciation.

“It made me appreciate the game more,” Smith said. “No one is out there making those girls play. They are just out there to play and have fun. So it was cool to give them competition, give them games, show them what it’s like, and give

them experience.”

This appreciation didn’t take long to resonate with the Jennies. Their gratitude surfaced before returning home.

Following their final game against the Aruban team, Team USA set out to make a lasting impression on their opposition.

They gave the Aruban players the custom USA jerseys they wore for the trip. The catcher for the team, SBU’s Dana Graves went as far as to donate all of her catcher’s equipment to the Aruban program.

“They don’t have organized sports and they don’t have club teams,” Rogers explained. “If they want to play, there’s that one team that they get to choose to play

on. They don’t have the resources we do.”

All four of UCM’s representatives admitted the trip was costly and that it was difficult to raise money to cover expenses, but each agreed that it was worth the cost and the work.

“If anyone has the opportunity, take it,” Koop stated. “It helped me realize how fortunate we are and what we have.”

The group agreed on the fact that the trip allowed them to play the sport they love while it, at the same time, introduced them to new faces and familiarize themselves with a new culture.
