NEED TO KNOW Mule Team Leaders application closes Friday The First Year Experience program is looking for leaders for the 2018 Mule Team. Leaders assist students into transitioning to UCM during the UCM Experience Kickoff held Aug. 9-12. Mule Team Leaders will be assigned 25 new students who they will guide and assist.

According to information provided, qualifications for Mule Team Leaders include being a full-time undergraduate UCM student with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA; being able to attend leadership development sessions; and being able to return to Warrensburg and attend programs and activities throughout the UCM Experience Kickoff. Housing employees are not eligible to become a Mule Team Leader.

Leaders receive $350 towards tuition and fees for the fall semester. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 16.

Department of Music scheduled Ghanaian musician and dancer The Department of Music is hosting Nani Agbeli, a leading dancer and musician from Ghana., Agbeli will be rehearsing with student percussionists, dancers and singers to perform alongside students and faculty, according to a news release. The performance will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, in Hart Recital Hall.

Agbeli will also be leading a drumming and dance workshop with students at Warrensburg High School.

Agbeli was born into a family of prominent dancers and drummers in Ghana’s Volta region, before becoming a lead instructor at the Dagbe Cultural Center. Since moving to the United

States, Agbeli has taught at many Universities, including Harvard University, Lawrence University and the University of Missouri. Agbeli currently teaches at the California Institution of the Arts.

The performance is free and open to the public and is financially supported by the Missouri Arts Council and the UCM Department of Music.

Panel provides info for moving off campus A panel held by the Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support office will be provide information for students wishing to move off campus. The panel, consisting of UCM staff, city of Warrensburg staff and local landlords. Panel members will answer questions about moving off campus while also providing tips to make the move smoother, safer and less stressful.

According to a news release, door prizes will be handed out. The event will

tract with the National Guard had been terminated, and they found out that even though finishing school was a goal for the team and the veteran, the individual needed more help with her day-to-day life.

“Her exact words were, ‘I don't want to be a burden. I feel like I’m a burden,’” Taylor said. “We told her, ‘You're not a burden. This is what we’re here for. We’re going to do whatever we can do to get you to a point where you know you can do it.

You are doing it and you can do anything else. Your story is not over.’ When I told her that, you can tell that her spirit just lit up.”

Taylor said the veteran was the breadwinner of their family before their contract was terminated, so she and Kuranda

changed their focus to meet the need of that veteran.

“Our focus went from school to Shomarri sitting down with her and filing for unemployment, making sure she knew where to go for food stamps and making sure she knew where to plug in for outside agencies to help with her needs,” Kuranda said. “How well is someone going to do at school if they aren't sure how they’re going to pay their rent the next month?”

Kuranda and Taylor have also been working with Elton Bindoo, a 75-yearold veteran who has always dreamed of See VETS, page 4

He told us, ‘I just want my degree so bad still. I’m 75, but I know I can do it.

If I get the help, I know I can do it,’” Kuranda said. “He has been doing phenomenal.”

The team said they will be working with him until he reaches his academic goals.

Kuranda and Taylor said they will be marketing more for VUB for the next five years while they have access to the grant to grow the program and reach out to as many veterans as they can.

“We just truly need help spreading the word,” Kuranda said. “Once the word catches on that this is here, they’ll send veterans our way.”

Unity Week brings speaker on Mental Health

Spotlight’s Unity Week is dedicated to celebrating diversity at UCM with events like Unity Pole, Tunnel of Oppression and a deaf culture presentation. Each event is designed to educate and celebrate the many unique aspects of our lives, according to a news release.

This year, Unity Week came to a close with guest speaker Josh Rivedal speaking on managing mental health in college Thursday, Feb. 8, in Hendricks Hall.

During an interview before his presentation, Rivedal said he knows he has saved lives by sharing his story.

“I’m talking about how to live mentally well and crush it in college. The way I am doing that is I’m talking about coping skills...mental health, and I’m sharing some of my own story,” he said.

Rivedal said he started his adult life as a professional actor and studied marketing and theater in college. He said he then began speaking at several universities and hospitals after being diagnosed with

clinical depression, attempting suicide multiple times throughout his college career and overcoming his battle with addiction.

During his presentation, Rivedal said he had to overcome many obstacles in his life and it seemed as though he was born into a cycle of suicide after his grandfather and father both took their own lives.

Mulekickers place nationally at Disney World

The University of Central Missouri's dance team, the Mulekickers, recently placed Top 10 at the Universal Dance Association Nationals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World.

The Mulekickers competed against 200 schools on Jan. 12, placing seventh in hip hop, ninth in pom, and third in game day.

“Competing at Nationals is an experience I will never forget,” said Kylie Dillion, a sophomore squad member.

Dillion said the process was long and difficult leading up to Nationals. The team attended camps, raised funds and practiced. The Mulekickers received second overall at dance camp in July, making them eligible for Nationals. The team also worked at Royals games to raise $20,000

for the trip.

Dillion said to build up for the twoday competition, they practiced for three hours three times a week and performed at games in between. The team learned the routines for Nationals over the summer.

“The routines were recorded on a camera so the team could go back and watch them to confirm everyone looked the same,” she said.

Dillion said managing it all could be challenging at times but it's worthwhile.

Allyson Cook, a graduate student, said she enjoyed the experience.

“The energy was incredible,” she said.

“There was nothing more uplifting than being surrounded by thousands of talented dancers.”

Cook said she had looked forward to competing at Nationals since she was a freshman.

“There is no better feeling of accom-

plishment than knowing you gave it all you had on the floor,” she said.

After completing the first day of the competition, the Mulekickers were chosen to compete in the new arena in Disney World for dance and cheer.

Ashley Perry, a senior squad member, was one of the few girls who got to cut the ribbon to the new arena.

Perry said she was happy to see cheer and dance getting the recognition it deserves. Perry joined the team as a freshman and said every year just gets better.

“The coach’s ability to teach the girls has improved every year, making the team dynamic better,” Perry said.

Clinics are scheduled for March 25 and April 8 in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Room M 67A from 1 to 4 p.m. Official tryouts are set for noon April 15.

FLU CASES SPIKE, ATTENDANCE POLICY CHANGES

The 2017-2018 flu season has been bad enough that UCM changed its attendance policy for the remainder of the 2017-2018 academic year.

According to a memo sent to UCM faculty members from the Office of the Provost, the amendment was made to allow students the ability to recover from illness without penalty and to reduce the risk of exposing others to infection.

The temporary policy changes allow students to make up missed assignments and exams due to illness. Documentation from a physician is not required, though an instructor may require a written statement from the student that an absence was due to illness.

Make-up work may be completed without penalty, but the student is obligated to contact the instructor on the first day back from an absence, and instructors can set reasonable deadlines for make-up assign-

ments, according to the memo.

The policy modifications also allow instructors to ask a student to leave class if the instructor believes they are ill. The student would then be allowed to makeup assignments they missed.

If an instructor believes a student is abusing the modifications to the attendance policy, the student may be reported to the Office of Student Experience and Engagement to determine if disciplinary action is appropriate.

Confirmed cases of the flu in Missouri have almost quadrupled this season compared to one year ago, and we may not yet have experienced the worst of it.

“I don’t believe we’ve peaked,” said Ronda Davis, Johnson County Community Health Services public health nurse coordinator. “We’ll probably peak some time in February, but I don’t think we’ve peaked.”

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Missouri Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report for the 2017-2018 Influenza Season, through

week 5 (Jan. 28-Feb. 3) there have been a total of 79,362 laboratory-positive influenza cases in Missouri, with a high so far of 12,708 cases reported in Week 2 (Jan. 7 – 13).

Last season through week 5 (Jan. 29, 2017 – Feb. 4, 2017) there were 20,400 such cases reported; the 2016-2017 flu season peaked in week 6 with 8,614 reported cases.

Davis said there have been 670 confirmed cases of influenza A and 255 confirmed cases of influenza B reported through Feb. 9 in Johnson County, almost doubling the combined cases of influenza A and B reported through Feb. 21 of the 2016-2017 flu season, when 325 confirmed cases of influenza A and 186 confirmed cases of influenza B were reported.

There were 7,435 confirmed cases of influenza last season through Week 5 in Missouri’s Northwest region, of which Johnson County is a part. There have been an almost tripling number with 20,231 confirmed influenza cases in Missouri’s Northwest region through Week 5 this

season.

Both Western Missouri Medical Center and the University Health Center have reported an increase in cases of both influenza A and B. Davis said Johnson County Community Health Services still has plenty of flu vaccinations left and encourages people who haven’t been vaccinated to do so.

“It’s not too late,” she said. “Even if we had peaked, people still have the risk of exposure. We still have vaccines, and we’d love people to come in.”

Davis said the best thing to do to prevent contracting the flu is to keep your hands washed and to keep yourself isolated if you are sick. A spokesperson for the University Health Center added that a healthy diet, proper sleep habits, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco will help.

Poets discuss 'Me Too' Movement at UCM

Series hosted poets EJ Koh and Amy Meng for a collaboration of a semester-long examination of the “Me Too” movement by the women, gender and sexuality studies program at UCM. The “Me Too” movement is a social media campaign creating community between victims of sexual assault and dialogue on rape culture.

Professor Wendy Geiger, who represented the women, gender and sexuality studies program at the reading, said it was the first event in the WGS’s #MeToo program that seeks to explore a variety of issues related to the movement.

“Our poets were kind enough to say, ‘Yeah, we can speak (about) a couple of poems where our poems have a speaker that might

address some of these issues as well,’” Geiger said.

Amy Meng read from “Bridled,” her debut collection of poems that won the 2017 Lena Miles Weaver Todd Prize for Poetry. She said her book is about why emotionally intelligent people enter into bad relationships.

Meng said her poem, “Selection From The Catalogue of Gazes,” was written months before the “Me Too” movement began. She said she’s seen many lists posted on social media about where people were assaulted. Her poem had the same structure of these posts.

“It’s sad to me that it repeats, but it’s comforting to know that there was a community and that you’re not alone in feeling these things that are very lonely experiences often,” Meng said.

In Meng’s poem, she writes, “I was looked at in the mornings, slow as a bug

/ while four-wheelers scalded the air; / during the friend’s wedding, the friend’s birthday, / the friend’s friend bumping into me in the kitchen, / just thought they’d say hello; / and in convenience stores, by the dog food, / by the six packs of mix-and-match beer; / looked at on the platform, having taken the night train / in the wrong direction.”

EJ Koh, author of “A Lesser Love” and winner of the Pleiades Press Editors Prize for Poetry, read her poem titled, “Beyonce’s Single Ladies English to English Translation.”

“All the big, beautiful women, bondage women, / divorced women, bisexual, transgender women,” Koh read from her poem, “All drug-free, gay, non-religious, Latter Day Saints, / social drinker, straight, widowed-with-kids women.”

Geiger said the WGS program is just starting the #MeToo series at UCM and is trying to be as interdisciplinary as pos-

sible. The program hosted a viewing of a documentary called “The Mask You Live in” Feb. 13 in the Union. The documentary, according to a news release, studies boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while navigating

America’s narrow definition of masculinity.

Digital Media Production professors will work with students on webseries course

A new kind of class is coming to the communication department this fall.

COMM 4200, a special topics class, will focus on the creation of a science-fiction anthology web series called “The Computer Lab” to eventually be produced and directed by students at UCM. Michael Graves, a professor of film at UCM, said he and fellow professor Mark von Schlemmer created the class thanks to an idea from Art Rennels, the chair of the communication department.

“He had an idea for a TV series or web series that would take place on UCM’s campus and that was really kind of it,” Graves said. “He had some general ideas about directions we could go, but he just thought that it was a great opportunity for our students to have active learning, to apply the knowledge that they’re learning in their classes toward the production of some work – a film (or) television show – and to have a professor integrally tied to that, sort of overseeing them.”

Graves said he and von Schlemmer brainstormed ideas for the web series. Initially, the ideas leaned toward a sitcom of an academic department’s wacky hijinks, but their combined interest in science-fiction led them down a different genre path.

“So we thought, ‘Well, what if there’s something weird about this place, something unsettling?’” Graves said. And that idea led them to create “The Computer Lab.” “There’s this computer lab in the basement of a large university that’s an innocuous, mundane-looking computer lab – nothing special about it at all,” Graves said. “And yet, there’s a computer in this computer

Von Schlemmer said the class will be offered in fall of 2018. Interested students must apply no later than March 1. He said there aren’t any prerequisites for the class, but some experience with film production of some sort will come in handy.

“We’ve got an application form that basically lists the eight or nine main crew positions and when students apply for it they should mention which one of these crew positions they’re most interested in,” von Schlemmer said. “We’re limited to how many students will probably fit in the class, but there’s ways for students to get involved even if they don’t take the class this semester –whether it’s future episodes (or) whether it’s helping serve on a crew as a PA” Graves said he thinks the class is an exciting opportunity for everyone involved.

He said they’re hoping to get a big student response so the class can be offered more in the future.

“My hope is that students take advantage of this opportunity,” Graves said. “I think one thing we often tell our students – maybe they have this realization too late –is that they don’t have enough stuff for their demo reel. They don’t have enough examples of their work and I think this is an opportunity for them to get some real-world experience making this web series and be able to have some work that they can include in their demo reel and help them get a job.”

“We have an alcohol and drug policy at UCM because we know that alcohol and drugs can help people not graduate if they’re misused,” Kiger said. “We want to help them interrupt any kind of behavior that might keep them from graduating.”

At the beginning of each year, UCM administers the Missouri Assessment of College Health Behaviors to a random sample of UCM students, a voluntary survey aimed at tracking the behaviors of students on college campuses.

Of the 565 UCM undergraduate participants of the survey in 2013, 71.7 percent said they did not use marijuana at all in the last year. In 2017, 75 percent of the 719 UCM participants said they did not use.

UCM’s survey results are in line with the results reported by Partners in Prevention, which collects survey data from UCM and 21 other universities around the state. In 2013, the PIP results showed 76.1 percent reported no use in the last year, and in 2017 the PIP results showed 70 percent reported they did not use marijuana in the last year, five percentage

points fewer than UCM, which may indicate our university actually has less of an issue than other schools.

Kiger said there is a perception of prevalence that simply may not exist.

“Most people think that most UCM students use marijuana, which is not true,” she said.

The percentage of UCM students who believe their peers have not used in the last year has more than doubled, from 8.3 percent in 2013 to 17 percent in 2017. Even so, there is still a gap between the perception of others and what is being reported about an individual’s own habits.

Brinkley said that the existence of a police report does not necessarily indicate a crime has been committed. For example, according to an incident report filed Jan. 16 about an incident that occurred on Jan. 14, an officer was dispatched to the Crossing at South and Holden because of a person potentially smoking marijuana. As it turns out, the person was smoking tobacco, a violation of campus policy but not of the law.

So, is marijuana use on campus trending up? The best answer is… it’s hard to tell. By certain metrics, it would seem to be; by other metrics, it would actually seem to be trending in the other direction, and it’s entirely possible that in a few years, the higher volume of marijuana-related referrals to VSAP this academic year will be an outlier.

Is marijuana use on campus trending up? If you’ve read the Campus Crime section of a recent digital issue of the Muleskinner, you’ve probably noticed the number of entries related to marijuana – in the Feb. 1 issue, 13 of the 25 reports published were marijuana related.

Amy Kiger, director of the office of violence and substance abuse prevention, said through Jan. 31, there have been 45 referrals to VSAP for first-time violators of the campus marijuana policy in the 2017-18 school year. There were 30 such referrals for the entire 2016-17 academic year and 25 in 2015-16.

“We’ve had more violations this year than we’ve had previously,” Kiger said. “Before that it was staying a little steady.”

While referrals to VSAP have increased significantly this year compared to previous years’ numbers, Capt. Bill Brinkley said arrests and referrals by Public Safety have not changed considerably from January 2017 to January 2018.

According to Public Safety records, there were 19 marijuana-related police reports generated in January 2017 involving 37 individuals; eight were arrested and 29 were referred for university discipline. There were 21 marijuana-related police reports generated in January 2018 involving 39 individuals; 12 were arrested and 27 were referred for university discipline.

Both Kiger and Brinkley said discretion is used on a case-by-case basis, keeping in mind the overarching goal is to maintain policy and student well-being while balancing it with student success.

WORLDBUILDING THAT HAD POTENTIAL

Netflix has produced some great original content in the past, including “Stranger Things,” “Narcos” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt.” Unfortunately, their movie “Bright” was not one of them. The film received negative reviews, with a 27 percent currently on RottenTomatoes and a 6.5/10 on IMDB. Now I wanted to see “Bright” when I first saw the trailers. A buddy-cop action movie set in a fantasy world also with a message about equality, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton playing his orc partner ¬– that sounds awesome. Alas, that wasn’t the final product.

Similar to HBO’s series “True Blood,” “Bright” takes place in the modern world where magical/fantasy creatures live side-by-side with humans. When a movie creates its own fictional world, it has to establish certain rules for that world along with histories, characters and so on.

For example, in the Harry Potter series, it clearly explains how the wizarding world works. “Bright” attempted to do the same with its story.

Using this fantasy setting, the film tried to deliver social commentary. In “Bright,” the fantasy species are supposed to represent stereotypes for certain social classes.

For example, elves are portrayed to be rich and successful. Orcs are portrayed to be poor, living in violent neighborhoods, suffer prejudice from by about everyone and are constantly being harassed by the police.

From my interruption, the portrayal of elves is supposed to represent Caucasians and other majority groups of those that are well-off. While the portrayal of orcs is

supposed to represent African-Americans and other minority groups. The humans don’t really represent any specific group, but rather give characters the audience can relate to in comparison to the exaggerated ones.

In fairness, this is a clever idea ¬– of course it isn’t very subtle. It’s hard to draw a deeper meaning when the allegory feels obvious – it’s why some people don’t like “Avatar.” I personally don’t know what to say about the message other than “Bright” used fantasy characters to represent social classes. I’m not exactly sure why though.

Was it to acknowledge prejudice in America? If so, it did accomplish that. Was it trying to show that some people will act like stereotypes, but some will rise above expectations? It also did that. But those are really the only meanings I can come up with.

Despite presenting an interesting world, “Bright” can be confusing sometimes because the world itself is not properly explained. For instance, a character makes a reference to The Alamo. Does that mean this world has the same history as our own? Were their orcs and elves at that battle as well? These are questions that make “Bright” perplexing but not in a good way.

To be honest, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are fairies in this movie and it isn’t explained whether they are sentient beings or mindless pests. To make matters worse, Will Smith has a scene where he beats one to death with a broom. Was that moment supposed to be comedic or See BRIGHT, page 11

BLACK PANTHER : One of the First black superheroes

In a few weeks “Black Panther” will hit theaters, becoming the latest film for The Marvel Cinematic Universe staring Chadwick Boseman as the famous superhero. With “Captain America: Civil War,” this will be the second film to feature the character. Because of the hype surrounding the movie, it is only fitting to give an overview of the character of Black Panther.

Black Panther, real name T’Challa, is the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. He was first introduced in a guest appearance of The Fantastic Four.

Originally, he attacked the team to test their strength and then revealed himself to be a good guy -- there’re good friends now. Black Panther was created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

In 1966, he played an important part in superhero history because he was the first African American superhero to appear in a mainstream comic book. This paved the way for more African American superheroes to come -- Luke Cage, Black Lightning or Cyborg to name a few.

As far as powers go, Black Panther is what videogame fans would refer to as ‘overpowered.’ In the comics, his body is enhanced with super-strength, healing, tracking, reflexes, etc. His also a skilled tactician, leader and has access to advanced technology: his suit alone has more powers than I keep track of. To be honest, this is the short list, I could’ve listed much more. All in all, he’s one of the toughest superheroes to fight in Marvel comics.

The story behind the role of the Black Panther is even more interesting. Spanning back for thousands of years, every king of Wakanda has been a Black Panther. It is a sacred, ceremonial title and it’s not inherited: every heir to the throne must pass several trials and prove

themselves as a warrior to be the next Black Panther. According to Comicstorian, the Black Panthers have defeated many invaders and even other superheroes.

Wakanda itself is a unique place. As a remote nation, it’s cutoff from the rest of the world. But at the same time, it has some of the most advanced technology to date. One of the reasons behind Wakanda’s advancements is that it’s home to the world’s only supply of Vibranium: a fictional and nearly indestructible metal -- It’s what Captain America’s shield is made of.

Black Panther has several allies in the Marvel Universe. Besides the Fantastic Four, he has visited America many times and associated himself with other superhero groups such as the Avengers. On occasion, while Daredevil was away, Black Panther watched over Hell’s Kitchen for him. He’s also no stranger to the X-Men either: he was once married to Storm, making her his Queen -- but their marriage isn’t working out at the moment.

It should be noted that Black Panther’s number one obligation is to his country and his people. So, if he has to choose between helping the interests of Wakanda or helping the Avengers, you know which side he’ll be on.

And what would a hero be without his villains? Uylessis

Klaw is one of Black Panther’s main rivals. Klaw is always trying to exploit Wakanda’s Vibranium. He killed Black Panther’s father, King T’Chaka, and Black Panther cut off his hand (Like Batman, every superhero needs a dead parent). As the new King, T’Challa has many other enemies, including Eric Killmonger, who wants to steal the throne for himself.

Both Killmonger and Klaw will be featured in the film.

Speaking of Batman, some have described Black Panther as Marvel’s version of the character. The two do have some in common: both are masters of stealth, known for scaring the living life out of their enemies and both are extremely rich.

These similarities aren’t surprising since Marvel Comics has admitted to “boring” characters from DC Comics in the past.

But unlike the Dark Knight, killing is not off-limits for Black Panther.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning where the inspiration for his name came from. Black Panther actually debuted before the Black Panther Party ever did. While both first appeared in 1966, according Watchmojo, the Black Panther party was founded in October and Black Panther comic book appearance was in July. In reality, his name was inspired by other comic book characters and possibly the Black Panther Tank Battalion, an all African American unit that fought in WWII. Despite having no connection with the Black Panther Party, Marvel felt uncomfortable about his name. According to Variantcomics, his name was change for to Black Leopard, but was later changed back because neither the Marvel staff nor the readers cared for the change.

Black Panther is a great character and I hope his movie is too. Here’s to another good Marvel film.

BRIGHT, continued from page 10 he compares an orc to Shrek. How can a movie like that exist? Wouldn’t that be extremely offensive towards orcs? These problems might sound like I’m nitpicking, but they are annoying to the point of distracting from the rest of the film.

There are other aspects of this movie that aren’t the best. The action can be over the top, the dialogue is filled with exposition and there are many plot holes throughout the story. In addition, the filmmakers must have thought in order to make this movie into a “tough” cop show they had to make everyone in it act like an a-hole and say the F bomb in every sentence – both are overdone.

I hate to rant, but there’s a scene I felt rips off “Training Day” – if you’ve seen both films, you know which scenes I’m referencing. And the reason this bothers me is because “Training Day” was written by David Ayer, who directed this movie. If you haven’t, it’s cliché and should decide for yourself.

But I will admit despite all that I’ve gone over so far, “Bright” is actually a decent movie. It’s not terrible, and there are some good aspects to it. At times, it can be compelling and entertaining. With that in mind, this movie still could’ve been much better than it is. I’m not sure if I’d recommend seeing it because I understand why some people didn’t like it.

It really is a shame that “Bright” made mistakes with world building and story because I would’ve loved to have seen more of the world it created. This is why if a “Bright” sequel or TV show spinoff is ever made, I’d be happy to see it.

At this point, I almost feel bad for Will Smith. He’s a very charming actor, but his latest films are just bad, like “After Earth” or “Suicide Squad.” I’m not saying he can’t do drama, I’m just saying he should pick better films. And to add insult to injury, “Suicide Squad” was also directed by David Ayer. Both of these guys should do us a favor and go back to working on good movies.

Jennies bounce back at Missouri Southern Following a shocking loss at home against Pittsburg State Feb. 7, Jennies basketball went on the road to face Missouri Southern. The first half alluding to a close game, but the Jennies used 44 points in the paint to pull away for an 80-63 victory.

The Lions went blow-for-blow

with the Jennies through the first half, overcoming a 7-0 UCM run to trail by three at halftime. The Jennies got behind early in the third quarter, but exploded for two separate 8-0 runs to go up 54-42. Forward Morgan Fleming was responsible for all eight points during one of the runs

and finished with 16 points ending a two-game slump. The Jennies led by double digits for the entire fourth quarter to cap off the win.

Paige Redmond played the entire game, leading the Jennies with 22 points on 10-19 shooting. Forward Kayonna Lee scored 17 and grabbed

12 rebounds for her second double-double in four games.

The Jennies will play two games on the road this week. They face 3-20 Lincoln Thursday with tipoff scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, they’ll face Lindenwood with a 1:30 p.m. tip scheduled.

Mules fall into tie with Lions following road loss Coming off a thrilling buzzer beater against Pittsburg State Feb. 7, Mules basketball took on Missouri Southern Saturday. Both teams shot the ball well with near identical marks of over 60 percent, but the Lions managed to pull off a 76-69 win to tie the Mules for third place in the MIAA.

The Lions led for the majority of the first half, but UCM was able to keep it close, only trailing 38-37 at half. In the second half, the Mules gained control on a 10-3 run to lead 47-41. Guard D.J. Richardson gave the Mules a 61-53 lead, their largest of the game. The Lions held the Mules scoreless for five minutes and

scored 15 to go up 68-61. The Mules were never able to recover and only scored eight points in the final nine minutes of the game.

Richardson finished with a career-high 26 points, leading all scorers. Guard Spencer Reaves went for 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Mules will be in action twice

this week, both games on the road.

On Thursday, they face Lincoln; tipoff is scheduled for 7:30. The Mules will get another shot at Lindenwood Saturday following their 72-63 loss last month, tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Jennies finish third at Crusader Classic Jennies bowling finished 7-5 earning a third-place finish at the Elmhurst/Valparaiso Crusader Classic over the weekend in Richton Park, Illinois.

The Jens dominated Alabama A&M 920-663 in their first match of the day. The following match against Monmouth was much closer, but UCM held on to win 889-

853. In the final match of the day, the Jennies suffered their only loss to Drury 934-866.

Next up for the Jennies is the MIAA Individual Championships

Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Elliott Student Union Bowling Center. The games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Two Mules place at MIAA Championships The Mules wrestling team competed at the MIAA Championships Sunday. Two Mules finished in the top five with UCM placing sixth as a team.

Daide Agnew went 2-2 in the 133-pound weight class. After winning his first match, Agnew was pinned by Lindenwood’s Hunter

Haralson moving him to the consolation bracket. Agnew made it to the third place match after winning the consolation bracket, but fell to Blake Dauphin of Central Oklahoma finishing fourth.

Shea Conley competed in the 157-pound class and went 2-1. Conley dropped his first match by one

point to Newman’s Tyler Mies. He moved to the consolation bracket and earned a bye to the semi-finals.

Conley’s semi-final match resulted in a win by medical forfeit over Ryne Cokeley from Fort Hays State.

The third-place match against Central Oklahoma’s Bryan Dutton was low scoring, but Conley picked up

the 3-2 decision to take third place.

The Mules will have a near twoweek break until they compete in NCAA’s Central Super Regional in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Feb. 23-24.

Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. day one and 11 a.m. day two.

Mules football announces 2018 signing class

The University of Central Missouri football team announced their class of incoming players for the 2018 season during an inaugural banquet at Player’s in Warrensburg last Thursday. The Mules are coming off their 11th straight-winning season after last year’s 9-3 finish.

The class consists of 33 players and is highlighted by the offensive line and defensive back classes. Mules head coach Jim Svoboda spoke highly of this year’s class.

"This is a great signing class. I thought our coaches were very thorough in bringing a deep group of quality prospects to the table and we were fortunate to land a high percentage of them,” Svoboda said.

Out of Boys Town, Nebraska, running back Dashawn Bates – who Svoboda said is one of the fastest kids in the state – was selected to play in the 2017 Shrine Bowl.

The offensive linemen are led by local product, Jake McCannon, from Crest Ridge High School. McCannon earned First Team All-Conference honors on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in 2017.

Henry Carranza, out of Olathe East High School earned First Team All-State and All-Class 6A on the offensive line in 2017.

On the defensive side, the Mules landed solid recruits to fill out their defensive back core. Azaiah Bello from Blue Springs High School was named to Second Team All-State in 2017 after racking up 71 tackles, seven interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Jordan Pringle, a defensive back from Bolingbrook, Illinois, was a three-year starter at Bolingbrook High School and made the playoffs all three seasons. He earned First Team All-Conference honors throughout his high school career.

The Mules also picked up linebacker

Dominic Raybourn and his brother John Raybourn, who is a quarterback from Staley High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Dominic received All-Conference and District honors in 2016 and 2017, making 137 tackles over his career. John was named First Team All-State, Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year and Simone Award finalist during his senior campaign. Both brothers were integral in Staley’s state championship victory in 2017.

Mules recruiting coordinator, Kyle Westphal, believes John Raybourn is one of the most exciting players to sign with them this year.

“He’s the Class 5A Player of the Year and led his team on a game-winning touchdown drive in the final minute of the State Championship game,” Westphal said.

Westphal, in his seventh season at UCM and 13th overall, believes this class is among the best he’s seen.

“As far as what we needed going into the recruiting season and the quality individuals we got, we feel like this is the best one we’ve gotten since I’ve been here,” Westphal said.

Mules Offensive Coordinator John McMenamin said expectations for next season remain high.

“We got a lot of guys coming back and we keep raising the bar so hopefully that will keep inspiring our players,” McMenamin said. “Our goal is always to win the conference and we won’t accept less than that.”

Mules football won’t start the 2018 season until September, but this signing class gives fans a lot to look forward to.

The Aviation Cadets from 1943 in the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps

The basketball team of the 355th Ambulance Company of Camp Funston and former Normal School Students arrived for a game with the Normal Training School. The former students were met by the Normal Guards, the band and faculty members and praised as heros for volunteering for the Ambulance Company. They would go on to see action in France.

College men in the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps as Aviation Cadets received induction orders to report for active duty from Colonel Raymond W. Briggs, commanding officer of the Seventh Service Command. The War Department advised that all Aviation Cadet Enlisted Reservists under a deferred status would be order to active duty no later than Feb. 28, 1943.

CAMPUS CRIME An incident of rape was reported via CampusEye at 9:59 p.m. Jan. 18 in South Ellis after a male sexually assaulted a female. The incident is still under investigation.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 4:53 p.m. Feb. 1 in Central Village. A strong odor of marijuana was detected and the source was narrowed to a single room.

The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

Malik Cameron, 19, and Perry Jones, 18, were both arrested at 9:05 p.m. Feb. 1 on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after an odor of marijuana was detected to be coming from their room in South Yeater hall. Both were released on summons.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 8:57 a.m. Feb. 2 in Todd Hall. A marijuana odor was detected, and the source was narrowed down to one room. The incident is being referred to housing for discipline.

A strong odor of marijuana was detected in the third-floor hallway at 11:13 p.m. Feb. 2 in South Yeater by an officer on foot patrol.

A television was reported stolen from a vehicle at 10:46 a.m. Feb. 3 in Lot 5 near North Ellis.

a.m. Feb. 4 on suspicion of possessing marijuana. Jackson was later released on signature bond after being processed.

A Jeep Cherokee was towed at 2:13 p.m.

Feb. 6 in Lot 5 due to an excessive amount of parking tickets. Tip-Top Towing arrived and took custody of the vehicle.

A Mercedes-Benz ML 350 reported stolen by the Kansas City Police Department was found at 5:36 a.m. Feb. 9 in UCM Lot 51 near Central Village. The vehicle was towed by Tip-Top Towing and KCPD was notified of the finding. The vehicle was later released to an individual at the request of the registered owner.

The occupant of the room denied consent to search. The incident will be referred to housing for discipline and two non-student occupants in the room were verbally banned from Yeater for the remainder of the evening.

A university regulation violation was reported at 11:12 p.m. Feb. 7 in regards to a BB gun being stored inside of a parked car at Washington and Houx streets.

Christian Fausel, 19, was arrested at 1:17 a.m. Feb. 8 at the intersection of Zoll and East Clark streets on suspicion of possessing false identification and failing to drive on a roadway of sufficient width. Fausel was stopped after an officer allegedly witnessed him making a 360-degree turn within the intersection and driving through the grass surrounding the intersection.

Kenneth Garthe, 19, was arrested at 1:20 a.m. Feb. 9 on suspicion of possessing false

An incident of domestic assault was reported at 9:29 p.m. Feb. 9 in the University Conference Center. It was determined by the officer that the roommates were under the influence of illegal drugs before one roommate began to assault the other for no apparent reason prior to the officer’s arrival. Both roommates were transported to WMMC for injuries and drug ingestion effects. The incident will be referred to university housing for discipline.

An officer on foot patrol detected an odor of marijuana at 12:14 a.m. Feb. 10 in the stairwell in Bradshaw hall. The officer was unable to locate the source of the odor.

A well-being check was requested at 12:26 a.m. Feb. 11 in Lot 67 after a running car was located in a visitor spot. Drug paraphernalia was seized from the car but no arrests were made. The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

A grounds employee reported a downed light pole at 11:14 a.m. Feb. 11 on Washington Street near the Crossing. No vehicles were around at the time of the report, but glass and vehicle parts surrounded the pole. It was later determined the incident occurred the night before, and Warrensburg Police towed the vehicle. The light pole has been removed.

Gianna Palmentere, 18, was arrested at 12:14 a.m. Feb. 11 on North Maguire Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. Palmentere was later released on signature bond after being processed.

Public Safety responded to a call from Warrensburg police after a fight occurred Feb. 11 on West Pine Street. Ryan Roberts, 36, was arrested at 1:27 a.m. on suspicion of resisting arrest, failing to obey an officer, and obstructing process. Roberts was transported to the Johnson County Jail, where he was held on 12-hour protective custody.

A possible drug law violation was reported at 12:16 a.m. Feb. 12 in Hosey Hall. An odor of marijuana was detected and traced to one room. The occupant was contacted and admitted to smoking marijuana earlier that evening. The incident will be forwarded for discipline.

POLICE BEAT Shots were fired in a parking lot at 12:22 p.m. Jan. 12 at 1034 S. Maguire St. .

Two females were being harassed by Tyler Highland and Thomas Veramendi at 7:34 p.m. Jan. 13 at Buffalo Wild Wings.

The harassment originally started on the UCM campus. Highland and Veramendi were informed to leave Buffalo Wild Wings and were warned to not contact the females again.

A box of jewelry and $50 was reported stolen at 7:26 p.m. Jan. 16 on Cedar Drive.

A license plate was reported stolen Jan. 20 on North Maguire Street when someone replaced the plates on a car.

An incident of shoplifting was reported

at 8:22 p.m. Jan. 21on East Young Street. It was reported that two six packs of alcohol and candy were taken.

A juvenile reported that her step-uncle has been having unwanted contact with her Jan. 22 on Broad Street.

Kayleigh Graffam, 19, was arrested Jan. 27 on Ninth Street on suspicion of indecent exposure and assaulting an officer. It was reported that Graffam was running around naked yelling at cars.

Deborah Nielsen, 59, was arrested Jan. 27 on East Gay Street on suspicion of driving without insurance and a revoked license.

Kayleigh Graffam, 19, was arrested Jan.

28 on Ninth Street on suspicion of disturbing public peace and failing to obey an officer. Graffam was transported back home after being processed.

Jennifer Allred, 33, was arrested at 5:11 p.m. Jan. 28 on West Culton Street on suspicion of disturbing private peace after Allred was reported yelling profanities and banging on doors at her neighbor’s house. Allred was later arrested at 9:43 p.m. on suspicion of disturbing the private peace and domestic disturbance after she continued beating on doors at her neighbor’s house when she returned home.

Rachel Palmer, 24, was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting Jan. 29 after an incident which occurred Dec. 6 on South Maguire

Street.

Robert Massie, 31, was arrested Jan. 29 on suspicion of improper registration and driving with a revoked license.

Anthony Duddridge, 24, was arrested Jan. 30 on suspicion of possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.

A 10-year-old girl was bit by a dog on Jan. 30 while riding her bike on Sunset Drive. The parents took the girl to the hospital, where she received 10-12 stitches on her leg. Warrensburg Police is still search-

Katoria Gitau, 28, was arrested on suspicion of driving without a valid license Jan. 31 on Land Street.

Ten counterfeit $20 bills were reported to be used Feb. 2 on East Market Street at Home Rentals and Management.

Sarann Septer, 37, was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault Jan. 31 on Prairie Hill Drive.

Sonya Whaley, 41, was arrested Feb. 3 on suspicion of failing to stop at a red light and driving with a revoked license. Whaley was released after signing a court summons.

A Bluetooth transmitter was reported stolen from a vehicle at 6:39 a.m. Jan. 31 on Shamrock Lane. The item was valued at $20.

Braniff Smoyer, 36, was arrested Feb. 3 on North Holden Street on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he left the scene of an accident on West Pine Street.

A wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle at 12:07 p.m. Jan. 31 on Laurel Avenue.

Two counterfeit $50 bills were collected Feb. 3 at the Burger King on East Young Street. The suspect received no food or change and left after the employee recognized the bills as counterfeit.

Daryl Clinton, 28, was arrested Jan. 31 on West Clark Street on suspicion of obstructing process, two traffic warrants and a warrant for possession of firearms.

Anthony Jordan, 37, was arrested Feb. 1 on suspicion of domestic assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dakota Roark, 20, was arrested Feb. 11 on West Pine Street on suspicion of obstruction of process and being a minor in possession of alcohol.

An incident of forgery was reported at 8:02 p.m. Feb. 5 on East Young Street.

Kevin Demoss, 20, was arrested Feb. 12 on West Clark Street on suspicion of disturbing private peace.

Hailli Elliot, 18, was arrested Feb. 6 on Creach Drive on suspicion of driving with a revoked license and a traffic warrant.

Weston David, 25, was arrested Feb. 11 on East Clark Street on suspicion of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

An Xbox One was reported stolen Feb. 12 from an apartment on Franklin Street.

Miranda Sarrazin, 37, was arrested Feb. 8 on North Maguire Street on suspicion of driving without a valid license.

James Byers, 61, was arrested Feb. 13 on Spring Ridge Road on suspicion of disturbing private peace.

Aminder Singh, 26, was arrested Feb. 8 on South Maguire Street on suspicion of promoting the sale of drug paraphernalia and imitation drugs.

Brian Parra-Navarro, 19, was arrested Feb. 13 on Broad Street on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

A laptop, tools and $20 was reported stolen Feb. 8 at a car dealership on West Young Street.

A cell phone was reported stolen Feb. 13 on South Maguire Street.
