Downtown Warrensburg’s First Fridays returns More than 50 artists, creators and musicians will showcase their talents at Warrensburg’s First Fridays Art Walk at 6 p.m. Friday in downtown Warrensburg.

Organizer Jay Linhardt said this month’s Art Walk could shift indoors due to the weather, according to a news release.

Visitors are encouraged to pick up a schedule and visit the businesses hosting the musicians and vendors. This month’s Art Walk includes a feature of Sandra Diamond at the Old Drum Coffee House, AJ Gaither performing at Muddy Creek BBQ and Manda Shea and the Sumpthin Bros. performing at The Gallery Artist Cooperative.

POLICE BEAT Tony L. Everts, 36, was arrested at 7:37 p.m. Oct. 5 in the 300 block of East Cooper Street on suspicion of shoplifting and trespassing.

Kenneth E. Jacobs, 26, and Jasmine J. Tauai, 19, were arrested at 1:47 a.m. Oct. 9 at the intersection of Market and Warren streets. Jacobs was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and Tauai was arrested on a warrant.

Amara B. Schultz, 35, was arrested at 9:50 a.m. Oct. 9 in the 300 block of South Mulberry Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Laffy taffy candy and $120 were stolen at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 9 in the 600 block of East Young Street.

Charges filed after crash, manhunt

One of two St. Louis individuals charged Wednesday following a traffic stop-turned-manhunt in Warrensburg told officers they were in a stolen vehicle and had been selling drugs in Springfield, Missouri, according to court records.

Kyle M. Moss, 17, and Jelani K. Warren, 24, were arrested Tuesday.

Moss was charged with the class D felony of possession of a controlled substance, a class E felony of unlawful use of a weapon, and the class E felony of resisting a lawful stop.

Jelani K. Warren, 24, was charged with the class B felony of first-degree burglary, misdemeanor stealing, the class E felony of resisting arrest, and the class D felony of tampering in the first degree.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Master Sgt. J.M. Toal attempted to stop a 2008 GMC Yukon traveling west on U.S. High-

way 50 for lane violations. When Toal activated his emergency lights, the driver of the Yukon, determined later to be Warren, attempted to flee and passed another vehicle on the shoulder. Warren then turned north onto Northeast 201 Road where he wrecked, according to the probable cause statement for Moss.

Warren and Moss exited the vehicle and Warren then fled on foot. Moss exited the vehicle holding a black bag and a pistol, according to court records.

Moss told investigators that after leaving Springfield, he and Warren returned to St. Louis on Monday where they were involved in a shooting, according to court records. They were on their way back to Springfield in the stolen Yukon to exchange it for another stolen vehicle. Moss told Toal the substances found in the console of the vehicle were either heroin or cocaine, according to court records.

After fleeing the site of the attempted traffic stop, Warren was apprehended by Warrensburg police around 1 p.m. at a residence in the 1500 block of Park Ave., just north of Arwood’s Furniture in War-

rensburg. The resident of the home called police after finding a liquor bottle in a closet. The police searched the house and found Warren in a utility closet, wearing several items he attempted to steal from the home, according to the probable cause statement for Warren.

Warren is a persistent offender, having pleaded guilty in July 2012 to second-degree burglary and first-degree tampering.

Moss had a case review hearing set for Wednesday afternoon. No hearings are scheduled for Warren.

Both are being hold in the Johnson County Jail on a $50,000 cash only bond.

A class B is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. A class D felony is punishably by up to seven years in prison. A class E felony is punishable by up to four years in prison.

I AIN'T AFRAID OF NO GHOST: "HALLOWEEN UNIVERSITY"

Spotlight hosted “Horror University” in the Union Ballroom Thursday, Nov. 1, from 7 to 10 p.m. for students to play games, eat food, make crafts and compete in the costume contest.

The top three winners of the costume contest won a gift card worth $15. There were many other activities, including “pin the bone on the skeleton,” “ghost bowling,” “pumpkin golf,” painting pumpkins, “spider races,” pumpkin tic-tac-toe, bean bag toss, balloon darts, mystery boxes and more.

Emily Bergsieker, assistant director of student activities and advisor of Spotlight, said these on-campus events like Spotlight’s are important to have so students have a safe way of having fun and meeting new people.

“I think it gives everybody an option to experience, whether it’s Halloween or whatever type of event we do, with the non-alcoholic parts involved,” Bergseiker said. “It just brings everybody together to have fun for an event.”

Daniel Buechter, a junior marketing major, said these types of events have value for students to hang out with friends and unwind.

“I think events like these are important because it’s a really good stress reliever,” Buechter said. “I know a lot of people like me have really busy schedules and sometimes it gets a little overwhelming, so these are really good events to go to when you’re at that point. You forget about all your stress and just have fun with all your friends.”

Military spouses find support at UCM

Just as with soldiers, military spouses accustomed to the rigors of a military lifestyle sometimes find coming to school can be an uncomfortable experience.

“People in this office have talked to me more than people in any of my classes,” said Amanda Wagner, a senior communications major whose husband was in the Army, of the Military and Veterans Success Center. “And so that was really relieving and relaxing that I could actually, possibly have friends for life. I can relate to them because I know some of the things they’re going through, some of the concepts they talk about.”

UCM and the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs extends military benefits to military spouses, and lending them the services of the Military and Veterans Success Center in the lower level of the El-

liott Student Union helps ease them into the campus culture.

UCM is not only recognized as a Military Friendly School by Victory Media in its annual Military Friendly Schools Guide, but it is also recognized as being friendly to military spouses.

“If a military spouse comes to UCM, they’re going to get the military tuition package, just like the active duty person,” said Jeff Huffman, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs. “That’s kind of unique. A lot of campuses across the country will offer the active duty member or the Guard or Reserve member a benefit… but not the family members.

We offer it across the board.”

This distinction isn’t only important to the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs.

UCM President Chuck Ambrose said the community’s and the university’s close ties to Whiteman Air Force Base make having a positive relationship with mili-

tary and military-connected students imperative.

“Our best means to serve the nation, state and our local community is certainly to serve those who serve,” Ambrose said.

“The very best way to support the global mission of Whiteman Air Force Base is not only to serve active servicemen but, perhaps more importantly, their spouses and families.”

One aspect of a soldier’s job is being called upon to serve. When they are away, it can mean half of a partnership is also gone.

“Having children, that meant I don’t get a break,” Wagner said. “I’m taking care of the kids, taking care of myself, taking care of the animals, the home, all by myself. We were somewhere away from family, so I can’t be like, ‘Hey mom, I need a break.’ So I had to realize it was all on me, and if something happened, it wasn’t going to be easy to get him back home.”

Amber Ishmael, a senior communications major and a member of the Air National Guard, has a unique perspective.

She was deployed in 2013 to Djibouti, a country in East Africa, and her husband, Staff Sgt. Austin Ishmael, is currently deployed in Djibouti. He has also been deployed twice to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Wagner and Ishmael both said that while they are taking care of things at home, they must remain strong not just for themselves, but for their husbands.

Ishmael said she would much rather be deployed herself.

“When I was deployed, it was so much easier,” she said. “Being the one left at home, it is ridiculous.

“You’re strong for them, and you’re strong for yourself, because if things fall apart back home, he’s not going to be very worthwhile to the mission if he’s worried about me,” Ishmael said.

T h e African Student Association is hosting a weekend of events to dispel misconceptions about Africa.

Experience Africa, an event that showcases different aspects of African cultures, is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Nov. 4 in Hendricks Hall. The event will feature performances such as dance, music, a gospel choir, poetry and a fashion show.

This will be the sixth annual Experience Africa event organized by the African Student Association. Rachael Gitau, junior and president of ASA, said Experience Africa started in 2012.

“Last year, the audience got to see some dancing and fashion,” Gitau said. “It gave people a little taste of Africa, but this year will be so much better.”

Gitau said related events are scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 4, such as Cultural Collision, a party that will be held after Experience Africa in the Lovinger Building gym. Taste of Africa, scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, in Union 240, will feature foods from all over Africa.

Gitau said the first Experience Africa event that she attended three years ago was informational.

“My freshman year, they had a geography game show during intermission, and you really learned where each country was located,” Gitau said.

Cache Smart, junior business management major and ASA member, said people in America aren’t very educated about Africa and have a negative perception about it.

“They only think about those sad commercials where everyone is poor and hungry,” Smart said.

Gitau said Africa is a continent that isn’t always portrayed positively.

“Everyone always thinks that Africa is a very poor continent, but all the resources we use come from Africa,” Gitau said. “People should know that.”

Jerusalem Kenesa, freshman nursing major, said she joined ASA to get a little more culture in her life.

“I’ve had people imagine stuff straight out of ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ cartoon and others had a pretty open mind,” Kenesa said.

“I guess people think of it the way movies make it look… dirt

Reporter Kenesa said Experience Africa is designed to break the stereotypes about Africa.

“It will give people a look inside the different cultures of Africa because I don’t think people know just how diverse Africa actually is,” she said.

Kenesa said she hopes that people leave Experience Africa more informed about the continent and different cultures.

“I’m excited and I think it’s going to be fun because it’s kind of like a show and tell,” Kenesa said. “I love to see people express interest in learning about and trying to experience Africa.”

Gitau said her goal for the event is for people to understand the mission of ASA, which is to “Bridge the gap of ignorance, get to know the real Africa.”

Code-A-Thon creates networking opportunities

UCM senior Ryan Evans has a job interview this Friday with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The same bank that hosted a Code-A-Thon event Oct. 13 where Evans and his team placed second.

Evans, who studies software management as part of his computer science degree, said the Code-A-Thon was a competition that required teams of up to five students to turn out a product adhering to the theme of “From Campus to Corporate.” He said the theme was announced Friday, Oct. 13 and the teams had until Sunday night to create a product and a video describing the product.

“The theme was a surprise, so you couldn’t prepare for it,” Evans said. “But what we did was, we would make sure the computers that we were going to use had all the environments that we would be decoding in, make sure they had all the stuff needed to run a server and that kind of thing so we could make a website, put it up and test it.”

Evans said two teams from UCM’s campus and one from the Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit participated in

the competition. Students from 15 other Midwestern colleges and universities also competed, according to a news release.

Evans said his team had an idea for what they wanted to create the night the theme was announced, but they soon realized the other team from UCM had the same idea.

“The other team from UCM, they made a social media sanitizer,” Evans said.

“It’ll just go through all your tweets or your Facebook posts or whatever and check it against a database of words that you might not want an employer to see and it’ll list them for you and give you the option to delete them.”

Evans said his team worked until 2:30 a.m. the second night because they had to completely restart with their new idea, “The Grapevine.”

“It was a website and it was an anonymous internet forum…so that people who are looking for jobs, just got jobs, and people who have been working in the industry for a long time, they can go on and ask and answer questions anonymously,” Evans said. “So you could ask without fear of repercussions or anything like that… and at the end of our video we said, ‘And remember, you heard it through The Grapevine.”

campus made it into the finals. He said the finalists were invited to the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank Oct. 26 to present everything they made. After treating the finalists to lunch, the bank announced the winners. Evans said his team took second and the other UCM team took first.

Belinda Copus, assistant professor at UCM and the program coordinator for computer science, said this was the first year that UCM was invited to the CodeA-Thon and the second year the bank hosted it. She said the bank came to UCM to promote their internship and graduate program.

“The Federal Reserve has 800 software developers in the Kansas City area,” Copus said. “I know I was misinformed or had made bad assumptions about them. ‘A bank? Do they write software?’ You think all they do is keep accounting and books and bank balances and stuff like that, but there’s a lot of software involved in their organization.”

Evans said he plans on being a software developer in the future. He was able to network at the bank when he helped present his team’s work.

“I’ve taken some web development classes so that’s the skill set that I used for the Code-A-Thon and also I have a job interview this Friday that happens to

also be with the Federal Reserve Bank, so I was doing the Code-A-Thon to kind of be like, ‘Hey, you know what I can do,” Evans said. “It’s kind of right up the alley of what I’m trying to do with my life.”

Copus said the bank is very current and modern in the applications that they’re creating. She said they use all the leading-edge technology.

“I think it’s a good partnership for us and for UCM, and for them and for our students,” Copus said.

When recruiters from the bank came to campus, Evans said he introduced himself as the president of the Association for Computing Machinery. They remembered him.

“One of the professors was like, ‘Hey, the Federal Reserve Bank (of Kansas City) asked me if you were going to do the Code-A-Thon,” Evans said.

She said the bank was keeping an eye out for new talent while also giving students a venue to stretch their skills.

“Any business that’s looking at interns and things, they’re trying to find new talent for their company, so it’s a winwin for everybody,” Copus said. “Our students gained a lot in it, our industry partner met potential candidates that they would consider interviewing, and Ryan’s a prime example.

A review: ‘It’

Still in theaters, “It” marks the second adaptation of Stephen King’s acclaimed novel. The movie takes place during the late 1980s in Derry, Maine – which is apparently the only state King novels ever seem to take place. A group of kids find themselves tormented by a terrifying entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the small town.

“It” is a horror film. Throughout the film, Pennywise is tormenting children across Derry with his evil powers. The scares can be very creative, such as burning hands crying out for help, dead corpses walking toward you or gallons of blood bursting from the sink. The movie contains the messed up, psychological horror that King is known for.

The film is not all scares though, it has beautiful cinematography. It’s not just in the scary sequences. There are several moments that take place in the peaceful outdoors. The shots of the river and the woods are just so calming. It provides a welcomed relief from the intensity in other scenes.

Also surprising, there is plenty of comedy in this movie. Every now and then, the kids will crack jokes at each other – usually consisting of remarks about nether regions and someone’s mother. Like the scenery, the comedy was a welcomed break from the horror.

The child actors are great, giving performances worthy of adult actors. In truth, they are better than some of the adults in this movie. They play good characters as well. I haven’t felt so compelled by a group of kids since “Stand By Me”, another King adaption. Stephen King may create cliché characters, but he does a good job writing kids. Many will recognize Finn Wolfhard, who plays Richie, because he plays Mike Wheeler in “Stranger Things”. It’s worth noting that “Stranger Things” took a lot of inspiration from Stephen King’s stories.

Stephen King is a great writer, but I feel this movie suffers from his tropes that every fan of King’s is familiar with. These are the recurring characters that appear in almost every King story: the pure evil bully, the jerk and the mean grownups. As I said before, most of his stories tend to be set in Maine. I am grateful that other King tropes don’t make an appearance such as the horror writer, the

recovering alcoholic, or the religious fanatic. None of these characters are bad characters; they just become annoying when you realize they appear in most, if not all, of King’s works.

“It” also has some flaws other than the King tropes. The movie sometimes relies too heavily on scary music. I think the horror would have been a lot more effective if “dramatic” music did not appear in every scary scene. It can be predictable at times too, epically when a sudden scare is about to happen, better known as jump scares. My biggest issue is the start of the film. As the opening title sequence is appearing on screen, little children can be heard singing a creepy song in the background.

This is a cheap, lazy way to make the audience feel afraid. I thought this movie was too good to rely on either dramatic music or a creepy nursery rhyme, which are both used often in bad horror films.

I feel this movie should come with a disclaimer.

“It” is a mature film; it contains blood, bad language… and child murder. Pennywise the Dancing Clown feeds off the fear of children; he also kills and eats them. There is not a lot of child murder shown on film, but in addition to being referenced several times, the opening scene is very brutal.

And if you don’t like clowns, I will let you be the judge on if you should watch “It”.

I don’t know if Bill Skarsgard’s performance as Pennywise is better than Tim Curry’s. I have never seen the original mini-series, nor have I read the book. I do think Skargard’s Pennywise is disturbing. He never made me laugh, but he did make me nervous. In reality, Pennywise is the not the worst character in “It”. One could argue that some of the human characters are just as bad as he is or worse.

I am not a fan of horror films, so I didn’t originally want to see this movie. Despite that, I enjoyed watching “It”. I found some of the horror to be really creative, almost like Edgar Allan Poe. It was very well made, and well acted. However, it’s not perfect. If you are a horror fan, you’ll probably like “It”. If you are not, you still might like “It”. I thought the movie was very good, and I look forward to watching the sequel – There is a sequel to “It” coming out. This one will show Pennywise coming after the kids as adults, which happens in the novel and the mini-series.

Pearce said it’s gratifying to see a past student of his succeeding.

“You want every single student in the class to gain some insights or skills that they’ll put to use in whatever they end up doing,” he said.

Smead, who taught at UCM for 41 years before retiring, said White did excellent work in his production classes and would often go beyond the requirements of assignments.

“Jerry is a very talented person with a strong motivation to succeed in whatever task he sets for himself,” he said. “He always challenged himself to try new things to improve his abilities.”

Smead said it’s a professor’s goal to see their students thrive after graduation and students like White, who had initiative and ability to excel, make the job rewarding.

“In production classes we do our best to teach students the basic theories and techniques of the craft and give them the opportunity to develop their abilities through production assignments. Beyond that, it’s up to the student to move beyond those basics,” Smead said.

Smead also said that White deserves all of the praise and credit for the hard work he has put in.

“I’m honored that he cites me as a mentor, but it’s Jerry who deserves the credit for his success,” he said.

White said he encourages film students to practice as much as they can while they have the access to equipment here.

“You gotta get the bad ones out of you right now while you're in school,” he said. “Be true to what you want to make; make the films you want to make and eventually you’ll find that audience for them.”

A REVIEW: ‘A MONSTER CALLS’ –WILL HE LISTEN?

“A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness, found in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library is a very touching story with a good life lesson. The story starts with a boy named Connor O’Malley whose father left when he was little, and his mother has cancer.

Connor hears a voice calling his name one day.

The next night, a giant tree Monster comes to his window and takes him into the forest. He tells Connor that he will return to tell him three stories, and after his stories, Connor has to take what he learned from them, and tell the Monster

I really enjoyed this book because he Monster teaches Connor to appreciate the things that he has in his life in a creative, imaginative way. Connor gets picked on at school because his mother is bald due to her chemotherapy treatments. He is angry at his mother and his life, but the Monster teaches him to stand up for himself and to realize that he is lucky his mother is still around.

While reading it, I realized that the Monster is really all in Connor’s imagination, and he is becoming a better person all on his own. There is a part in the book where Connor is being bullied, and the Monster is behind him and he is the only one seeing and talking to it, not the bullies. I think Connor is afraid of accepting his truth, and the Monster is a symbol of his truth that is making itself known.

I think this book seems more for a younger audience, but it is still very touching and heart-warming. It has very good illustrations and teaches a good life lesson. The drawings are in black and white and look a little scary or eerie, but they still fit well with the story. I haven’t seen a lot of chapter books with illustrations, especially one in a college library, so it was a bit different. The book teaches a good lesson to appreciate the good things in life and the things you already have instead of what you wish you had. Connor wishes that his mom would not be bald and sick, but the Monster helps him come to terms with her sickness and to accept that she is losing time, and that he should savor the time he has left with her.

A REVIEW: ‘GLASS’ THE MONSTER STILL LURKS

“Glass” by Ellen Hopkins, which can be found in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library.

“Glass” is the sequel to Hopkins first book, “Crank.” “Glass” continues the story of a girl named Kristina and her son, Hunter, who was conceived when she was raped in “Crank.”

Kristina’s boyfriend, Trey, leaves for college and her parents kick her out of the house.

She goes to live with her friend, Robyn and her boyfriend, who pull her back into doing meth, or “glass,” and she spirals into her addiction again.

Hopkins writes a lot of serious books with plots that a lot of people don’t talk about nowadays like rape, abuse and addiction. I think these are good plots because they make people more aware of how seriously drugs can damage you and affect your life. She reminds her readers that these things do still happen, and we need to stop it.

I really like Hopkins’ writing style. She separates her words, sentences and paragraphs on the pages, like she’s writing her stories in the form of a poem. It is a lot different from any other book I have read. I have never read any writing style like hers. Here is an excerpt from the book for an example: Walking with the Monster Life

Ellen wrote “Crank” and “Glass” based off her daughter, who was addicted to meth.

Ellen personally knows how drugs can affect someone and I think this is what makes her writing so good. A metaphor I really like in “Crank” and “Glass” is when Ellen calls Meth “the monster.” If you want to read a serious drama or suspense book with a different writing style, I think you should consider reading this book.

MULES BASKETBALL PRIMED FOR SUCCESSFUL SEASON

T

he University of Central Missouri Mules basketball team held their annual Meet the Mules scrimmage Monday. This follows the Mules’ first exhibition game of the season against Florida State, an NCAA Division 1 school, that ended with a 116-68 Seminoles victory.

This scrimmage serves as a way to show off their skills and talent to fans before opening the regular season and also give the fans an opportunity to see some of the changes the team has made in the past year. While the 20162017 season was a very successful one for the Mules, the 2017-2018 season has the opportunity to be even better.

The Mules finished last season with a very respectable 21-9 record. This included a 13-6 record in conference play, good enough for second overall in the MIAA Conference. It is because of this success that Mules enter the season ranked second in the MIAA preseason rankings, ranked only behind last season’s national champion, Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. While the Mules missed the NCAA Division 2 Tournament a season ago, head coach Doug Karleskint looks to have his team primed for a shot at not only a tournament bid, but a conference title as well.

The Mules return several key players from last season and have also added some new and experienced faces.

DJ Richardson returns as the Mules third leading scorer from a year ago and also provided some stingy defense out of the guard position. Jakob Lowrance saw action in every game last season and gave the Mules some great minutes coming off the bench, scoring eight points per contest and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field for the season.

The Mules also added some new faces with D-1 experience. Josiah Talbert joins the team from Liberty University where he played in 30 games for the Flames. Duane Clark Jr. transfers in from UMKC where he appeared in 32 games. While Philip Winston comes in from Quinnipiac University. This mix of returning players and players with D-1 experience will be key in the Mules run to another successful season in 20172018.

The Mules open their regular season against Minnesota-Duluth Nov. 10 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

They will then take on Bemidji State Nov. 11 before returning home to begin the Fairfield Inn Classic against Cameron and Maryville. The Mules start their conference play December 10th at home against Northwest Missouri State.

Jada Scott was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and Allysa Gann earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Week following the Jennies’ pair of shut-out victories over the Lindenwood Lions and the Missouri Western Griffons Oct. 27 and 29.

Redshirt junior forward Jada Scott notched her fourth consecutive MIAA award after three goals over the weekend. She scored in the 35th minute against the Lions with an assist from Kayla Hamner. Scott also scored in both the 29th and 58th minute against the Griffons She took seven total shots over the course of two games, three of which were on-goal, and finished the weekend with six total points. Last week, Scott became the all-time leader in career points. This week, she became the first Jennie to total over 100 career points.

Sophomore defender Allysa Gann hauled in her first MIAA Defender of the Week award. Gann played a key role in a Jennies defense that posted back-to-back shutouts.

The Jennies’ shutout against Missouri Western marked their 16th shutout of the season.

The Jennies’ victories wrapped up their regular season play and earned them the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament. The Jennies will host the Emporia State Lady Hornets at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at the South Recreational Complex in the first round of the tournament.

The Jennies wrap up their regular season with a road trip to Lindenwood and Missouri Western this weekend. The team will face the Lions at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in St. Charles, Missouri and will take on the Griffons at noon Oct. 29 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mules’ loss to UCO hurts them in rankings The Mules fell short against the Central Oklahoma Bronchos and the loss affected their standing in both NCAA Regional Rankings and the top-25 AFCA coaches poll.

The Mules fell from No. 6 to No. 9 in the central region in this week’s NCAA Regional Rankings. Only the top seven teams from each region advance to the playoffs. They also dropped out of the AFCA coach poll. The Mules held the No. 23 spot last week, but the loss knocked them out of the rankings and into the “receiving votes” category.

The Mules look to rebound after a tough loss as they host the Northeastern State RiverHawks at 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at Walton Stadium Kennedy Field. The Mules will be celebrating Senior Day, as the game is the last home game of the season.

Jennies Volleyball falls in AVCA Poll The Jennies dropped from No. 16 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association to the No. 19 following a pair of losses to Northwest Missouri Bearcats and Missouri Western Griffons.

The Jennies faced off against the Bearcats Oct. 27 and were defeated 3-1. Aubree Bell led the team with 15 kills, Kylie Hohlen totaled 28 digs and Ally Offerdahl dished out 45 assists and 15 kills.

The Griffons swept the Jennies just two days later. Kasey Hohlen notched 12 kills, Ally Offerdahl finished with 27 assists, and Kylie Hohlen had 22 digs.

The Jennies will host the Washburn Ichabods at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

MULES WRESTLING starts the season at home

Mules wrestling opens up their season by hosting the UCM Open on Nov. 4 and Wrestling head coach Justin Ensign explained that this is the season for Mules fans to take an interest in the sport.

“It’s probably one of the hardest and most demanding sports out there,” Ensign said. “Just to be mediocre you have to put in a lot of work.”

While Mules wrestlers put in hard work every season, there are specific aspects to be excited for this season. For example, the Mules recently recruited a class of 20 wrestlers into the program, several of whom Ensign sees taking prominent roles on the team.

Trenton Lieurance, a 285-pound freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was among the newcomers that Ensign mentioned could have a long-lasting impact on the team.

“He’s someone who, over his career, we expect a lot from,” Ensign said. “He

was ranked in the top-20 in pretty much every poll across the country, so that’s a big recruit for a school like ours.”

Freshman Tyler Flood from Gardner, Kansas, was also among the freshmen that Ensign mentioned. Both Flood and Lieurance, however, may not see competition immediately. Flood was recently injured and although he was cleared to play, Ensign explained that Flood’s debut could be postponed as an extra precaution. Lieurance is also battling injury and his debut remains to be determined.

The Mules also recruited several wrestlers that transferred to UCM. Ensign placed an emphasis on junior Shea Conley from Sapulpa, Oklahoma, redshirt junior Dylan Bollinger of Pinon Hills, California, and redshirt sophomore Brent Newcomer from Baltimore Maryland.

“Those are some guys that should factor into our lineup,” Ensign said. “They’ll definitely help our team, and I expect a lot

from them individually as well.”

While the Mules have an abundance of fresh talent that they are assimilating into their program, there are also returning wrestlers that are poised to lead the team this season.

One the most notable returning wrestlers is Jesse Reser. The 174-pound sophomore finished 29-9 last season with 12-2 dual record. He placed second in the MIAA Championships last season at 165 pounds.

“He’s fun to watch,” said Ensign. “I think if you’re going to come out and watch, then he’s the one you want to watch. Win or lose, you know he’s always going to compete to the best of his abilities. He makes you earn it and doesn’t quit.”

Reser and the rest of the Mules wrestling team will see their official competition of the year at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Multipurpose Building.

Richard N. Wulz, 62, was arrested at 12:51 a.m. Oct. 11 at the intersection of US 50 Hwy and Maguire Street on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, improper registration and driving without insurance.

It was reported at 12:41 p.m. Oct. 18 that a student’s OneCard Maxx was used by someone other than them. The student allegedly said the card must have fallen from his pocket between 9:20 p.m. and 10 p.m. Oct. 17 between Ellis Dining hall and Bradshaw. The card had been used twice and has since been cancelled.

Lanae G. Goth, 21, was arrested at 5:15 a.m. Oct. 11 in the 100 block of Ming Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Two bags of chips were stolen at 1 a.m.

Oct. 12 in the 700 block of South Maguire Street.

Courtney R. Campbell, 17, was arrested at 11:17 p.m. Oct. 12 at the intersection of Washington and Culton streets on suspicion of possession of marijuana and for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

It was reported at 10:21 p.m. Oct. 19 that a disturbance occurred on the fourth floor of South Yeater. The parties involved were arguing about cleaning the shared bathroom and allegedly said no physical altercation occurred. The parties agreed to separate for the night. The incident will be referred for university discipline.

Corey C. Land, 21, was arrested at 2:14 p.m. Oct. 14 in the 200 block of Ming Street on suspicion of urinating in public.

It was reported at 1:13 p.m. Oct. 20 that an officer was requested to Ground floor in North Ellis for the odor of marijuana. After further investigation, it was determined the odor allegedly came from an adjacent room. No one answered the door. Later, at 11:10 p.m. Oct. 20, K9 Echo conducted a sniff of the hall. Echo allegedly indicated the presence of a narcotic odor coming from two rooms. No one was home. Information was later obtained about the residents and housing staff was notified for documentation.

Samuel M. Smith, 34, was arrested at 12:04 p.m. Oct. 16 on the 500 block of North Maguire Street on suspicion of stealing a bottle of alcohol.

It was reported at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 20 that officers were requested for an odor of marijuana on the second floor of Nattinger at the west stairwell.

Meyana D. Bush was arrested at 10:06 p.m. Oct. 22 in UCM Lot 48 on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. It was reported at 5:11 a.m. Oct. 22 that a parked white Pontiac Grand Am had its trunk open in UCM Lot 48. The reporting officer left the patrol vehicle to shut the trunk and allegedly detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The officer looked through the window and observed drug paraphernalia on the driver’s seat.

It was reported at 3:47 p.m. Oct. 23 that credit cards and gift cards had been removed from a wallet left in an unlocked vehicle. The student allegedly said their vehicle had been parked in UCM Lot 40 from 10:15 p.m. Oct. 2 to 2:15 p.m. Oct. 23. Nothing else had been taken from her vehicle.

It was reported at 9:46 p.m. Oct. 23 that an officer responded to Nickerson hall about an alleged incident of harassment.

The student was contacted and allegedly stated she overheard her suitemate say she wanted to beat her up.

It was reported at 11:15 p.m. Oct. 23 that an odor of marijuana was present on the first floor of The Crossing. The alleged odor was detected by the reporting officer but its source was unable to be determined.

Reginald L. Meade was arrested at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 on suspicion of trespassing after an officer observed him in UCM Lot 51 when he was allegedly banned from the lot.

It was reported at 10:59 a.m. on Oct. 25 that an alleged harassment had occurred over social media. The reporting party said a member of their sorority allegedly threatened them through SnapChat.

It was reported at 11:37 p.m. Oct. 25 that a strong odor of unburnt marijuana had been detected on the first floor of Knox Hall. The reporting officer was unable to locate the source of the odor. K9 Echo conducted a sniff of the hall and did not locate the presence of marijuana.

It was reported at 8:03 p.m. Oct. 26 that an officer patrolling the Sigma Pi chapter room at the Fraternity complex heard music loud enough to shake the shared wall coming from the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter room. Five individuals were contacted in the Lambda Chi Alpha room. One male was allegedly a minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage. The alcohol was destroyed and the incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

It was reported at 9:49 p.m. Oct. 26 that an officer was requested to The Crossing regarding a drug law violation. The responding officer allegedly detected an odor of marijuana between rooms 13 and 139 but could not locate the source of the odor.

Rasheed M. Henderson was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 26 in the 100 block of Houx after a vehicle parked in a marked no parking area was checked. A second male was arrested for an alleged unrelated warrant.

Ronnie C. Thomas was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 26 for an alleged felony property damage warrant out of Johnson County, Kansas, after parking in a no parking area in the 100 block of Houx street. A second male was placed under arrest on suspicion of drug paraphernalia.
