NEED TO KNOW Distinguished alumni recognized Five distinguished UCM alumni will be honored at a reception and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Elliott Student Union ballroom.

Barry Davis, class of 1981 and Major General Karen LeDoux, class of 1983 will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards, the highest honor for alumni that is presented in recognition of those who are considered the “brightest and most distinguished” in their fields.

Rob Ruth, class of 1975 will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service. It’s awarded to individuals who have given their time and resources to enhance the university, the community or both.

Chang Bin Yim, class of 1963 will receive the Distinguished International Alumni Award and LaTanya Buck, classes of 2002 and 2004, will take home the Early Achievers Award.

The Distinguished International Alumni Award goes to alumni who have gradu-

ated from UCM as international students and who have achieved professional distinction either nationally or internationally.

The Early Achievers Award recognizes alumni who are 40 years of age or younger and have achieved an early success.

Tickets are required for the event and $50 each. Tickets are still available at ucmfoundation.org/events/homecoming2017.

Alum presentation on biomechanics research UCM Alum David Penning will present his research on snake biomechanics at 3 p.m. Friday in the Nahm Auditorium in W.C. Morris. Penning earned a bachelor's and master’s degree at UCM and then went on to earn a Ph.D. at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. UCM & National Guard collaborate on curriculum

UCM and the Missouri National Guard signed a joint agreement Monday, Oct. 2, to address a need for well-trained technology professionals and citizen soldiers.

With the agreement, called the Memorandum of Understanding, UCM and the Missouri National Guard will collaborate on cybersecurity curriculum, officer education and development of future cyber-technicians.

The MOU was signed by UCM Pres-

ident Charles Ambrose and Major General Stephen Danner, the adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard. With the MOU, UCM can cooperate with the Missouri National Guard to create a future cyber hub at the Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

The MOU also helps provide opportunities for Guardsmen to receive an education with no out-of-pocket cost.

CAMPUS CRIME It was reported at 8:24 a.m. Oct. 3 that Parking Services requested a black Cadillac parked in UCM Lot 67 be towed due to excessive unpaid parking tickets. Tip Top Towing took custody of the vehicle at 8:39 a.m.

It was reported at 3:23 p.m. Oct. 3 that Parking Services requested a silver Honda parked in Lot 18 be towed due to excessive unpaid parking tickets. Tip Top Towing took custody of the vehicle.

At 8:16 p.m. Oct. 3 it was reported that a possible weapons violation had occurred in the past. The reporting officer met with

a student who said she saw a male playing with knives and throwing stars inside and outside of a class she has with him. She allegedly said he was not dangerous or aggressive towards anyone.

The male was later contacted and advised not to show his pocket knives and to leave his throwing stars at his off-campus residence.

Brandon L. Marshall, 18, was arrested at 7:23 p.m. Oct. 3 on suspicion of assault and battery after allegedly grabbing a female by the shirt sleeve twice with force.

'Ole Burg: From then to now

him buckets of the insects. He and some friends started cooking them in soups and cakes and baked locusts with honey.

Apparently, it takes 500 grasshoppers to make one cup of meat.

Students live in Warrensburg during the school year while they’re trying to finish their degrees. Some stay for a couple of more years to go to grad school, and some even find jobs here and end up living in the ‘Burg for several years. But how well do they actually know the town of Warrensburg, Missouri?

Turns out, Warrensburg has a rich history that many students don’t take the time to learn while they’re living here. What are some things that make Warrensburg the town that it is?

The Old Courthouse Mike Shaw, the curator and administrator of the Johnson County Historical Society, said the oldest courthouse in Warrensburg was built sometime between 1838 and 1841 and is two stories tall.

Shaw also said the building was originally built using sun-dried bricks, and then the county stuccoed it in the late 1860s.

“It didn’t weather very well, so the county stuccoed it in the late 1860s, and it's been stuccoed ever since. That’s why you don't see the bricks,” Shaw said.

The courthouse was sold in 1875 and was turned into a home. When the county bought it back, they redesigned it to look like the old courthouse using the original blueprints.

The courthouse is most predominantly famous for housing the Old Drum trial where a man was taken to court for killing a dog that was harming his sheep.

The lawyer representing the dog’s owner called dogs the best friend of man, and that’s where the famous saying “man’s best friend” comes from.

The Railroad Coming Through Before 1865, the railroad didn’t go through Warrensburg. The railroad was finally extended through Warrensburg in 1865 and completed to Centerview, Holden and Kingsville. It made its way to Kan-

Old town Warrensburg was significantly smaller, and the railroad allowed the town to grow east, shifting the downtown area to its current location where the train depot is also located.

“A man could ride into town, buy a winter’s supply of staples, get his horse shoed, purchase a bottle of whiskey, get thrown into jail, consult a lawyer and pay a fine without ever having to step foot outside the public square,” Lillian Akers wrote in “A Sketch of ‘Old Town’ Warrensburg.”

Grasshoppers According to “Early History of Warrensburg,” written by Mary L. Rainey, there was a plague of grasshoppers that took over the town and countryside in 1875. The grasshoppers ate everything green they could find and then filled the ground with their eggs, which would hatch the following spring. The grasshoppers also made dense swarms that would stall trains in low places.

Rainey’s book said the grasshopper infestation ended up costing Johnson County about a million dollars.

An entomologist named Charles Riley came to town and hired boys to bring

Most people have heard that the saying “A man’s best friend is his dog” comes from the famous Old Drum court case out of Warrensburg, but did you know that the first zero-turn mower was also invented in Warrensburg?

Max Swisher, the same man who donated the money to create of the Max B. Swisher Airport, made a mower that utilized the front wheel as the drive wheel that could also turn 360 degrees.

Shaw said Swisher took this idea to his boss but didn’t quite get the reaction he was looking for.

“He took the plan to Mr. Goodall and he said he didn't want to sell a mower to a man who was so lazy he had to ride it,” Shaw said.

Swisher ended up selling the patent to Hesston, which became Excel Industries in years to come.

The First Newspaper The first newspaper produced in Warrensburg was a handwritten paper called the Warrensburg Clipper published by a man named William Stephenson, but everyone called him Uncle Billy.

“Early History of Warrensburg” said Uncle Billy would charge 25 cents for an advertisement in the Warrensburg Clipper, but there was a firm in town, Pinkston and Calhoon, that didn’t like the 25-cent fee. Uncle Billy noticed this and decided to give them a free advertisement in his next issue of the paper.

Rainey said the free advertisement was a drawing of a man vomiting negative words about the firm. Once the firm saw the drawing, they gladly paid their 25 cent fee from then on.

Cave Hollow The famous Cave Hollow park that holds live action role playing matches, photo shoots and dog walks was just as popular for the citizens of Warrensburg in the 1800s.

Rainey’s book says young lovers would go to the caves and leave their marks on the walls just like some do today. She also said the park had a spring that furnished water for the old town of Warrensburg until it was filled with trash.

Rainey said smallpox was a big issue in Warrensburg, so the hospital created a “pest house” near the caves to keep infected people away from the rest of the population.

Magnolia Opera House “Early History of Warrensburg” also talks about an opera house that opened Oct. 25, 1890, at the corner of Washington and Pine streets. The main area of the theater seated 500 people and the balcony seated 300.

The opera house was also one of the first buildings in Warrensburg to have electricity. It closed during the start of World War I. The first regular nickelodeon, a movie theater with an admission fee of one nickel, was built in 1907 on Holden Street.

Within a year of the nickelodeon being built, there were a total of three electric theaters in operation in Warrensburg.

The Johnson County Historical Society is located on Main Street in the Old Town section of Warrensburg. The building is right next to the old Johnson County Courthouse. Anyone can find thousands of pieces of information and stories on Warrensburg families, buildings and more at the old courthouse and adjacent Mary Miller Smiser Heritage Library. The historical society provides genealogy assistance, tours of the courthouse and even hosts concerts.

INNOVATIVE PUBLIC RELATIONS MUST RAISE $14,000 TO SUPPORT GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP

The student-run Innovative Public Relations organization needs to raise $14,000 to pay for its graduate assistantship next year following budget cuts at the University of Central Missouri.

Tricia Hansen-Horn, a public relations professor and IPR adviser, said the program is only able to keep university funding for its GA position through the 20172018 school year. After that, IPR will have to provide their own funding for the GA position.

IPR has raised a little over $3,500 as of Oct. 5. However, about $10,500 more is needed to meet their goal, according to the IPR Twitter account.

The IPR graduate assistant is responsible for overseeing the program and managing jobs with clients.

According to the IPR website, Blake Hedberg is the current GA.

Each year, several public relations students apply online for one of five positions in hopes of being accepted to the team. The IPR team works with a range of clients, from campus and community organizations to larger corporations, on various public relations related projects.

Dani Myers, the IPR graduate assistant from 2011 to 2013, said she was upset by the news of the budget cuts. She said the program was important to her and her career.

“Professionals in the agency world understand how crucial it is to keep clients updated on project progress and the value of demonstrating that PR efforts are making a real difference, and we were able to practice this as students,” Myers said.

Myers said IPR gave her the proper experience to be hired by her current employers.

Sarah Arnett, a sophomore PR student, said IPR is an important program.

“The IPR program here at UCM seems to be a great opportunity for my major,

and I really don’t see anything else comparing to the experience that this program allows,” Arnett said. “As a public relations major, I can see the importance that this program has for students wanting to get actual experience in the field that they are pursing. I am confused as to why the program would be something the school would ever want to cut.”

The IPR program began in 2010 and has won three awards: the Kansas City Prism Award for the “Together We’re Stronger Campaign” in 2016, the Kansas City Quill Award in 2013, and the Higher Education Advertising Award in 2012.

Hansen-Horn said IPR is moving forward despite the cut.

“The budget cuts were an unexpected hit to our program,” she said. “However, they are not stopping our current efforts or business with our clients. IPR is an amazing opportunity for our students, and we will do our best to continue our work in the coming semesters on campus.”

PERTLE SPRINGS RECEIVES $1 MILLION IN UPGRADES

New docks, indoor bathrooms, a newly paved roadway, solar security lighting, sidewalks, an outdoor classroom, trails, bridges and lake cleanings are the scheduled upgrades hitting Pertle Springs in the 2017-2018 school year.

With a starting budget of $2 million, the final plans come in at about $1 million and is funded by Student Recreation and Wellness Center fees.

“The budget was not set with a necessary goal to spend the entire lumpsum of money, but instead was set to ensure that we would have the funding available to provide the park with all of the upgrades and improvements that it needs,” said Beth Rutt, chair of the Pertle Springs En-

hancement committee.

Rutt was responsible for setting the budget and managing the efforts for the renovations.

Pertle Springs, located about a mile south of the University of Central Missouri campus, is a recreational and educational park with small fishing lakes, an observatory, the Keth Memorial Golf Course, and the clubhouse and restaurant, Traditions.

Rutt said the repaving of the road will be completed before the end of Oct. 2017, and will feature a bike trail marking on the main road. The road work will be completed in phases so that traffic is able to enter and exit the park during the reconstruction period, which started at the beginning of October and is expected to be finished by the last week of October.

A 12-by-24-foot courtesy dock will be

installed on Lake Cena on the north side of the lake next to the parking. Rutt said that students and community members will be able to rent out kayaks and paddle boats by swiping their debit or credit cards at a payment station on the dock at their own accord. All prices for these rentals are still being discussed.

The cost of the dock is about $25,000.

The cost for the walkway is about $7,000, and the concrete back attachment will cost a little under $2,000, according to budget documents from Rutt.

Rutt also said there will be a 45-by32-foot fishing dock installed for fishing and sunbathing located in adjacent with the fishing dock, just in front of the north parking lot. The dock will cost $38,000.

Person shot in leg near Sterling Elementary

A shooting occurred around 9 a.m.

Friday in the 300 block of East Market Street near Sterling Elementary School where a person was shot in the leg.

Lt. Andrew Munsterman said a man was shot in the leg and a passerby called the instance into officials.

Warrensburg Police Chief Rich Lockhart said the victim told officers he was walking, minding his own business when he felt a pain in his leg, not realizing he had been shot.

Lockhart also said the man was in his late 20s and was transported to the hospital shortly after the incident occurred.

Police interviewed the victim and neighbors in the surrounding area, however, Lockhart said facts within the stories contradicted each other.

The victim does not want to prosecute the shooter.

The police department notified the district when the incident occurred.

All schools in the Warrensburg district were put in lockdown to ensure the safety of students.

Mike Scott, assistant superintendent of the Warrensburg School District, said the schools were only placed into an exterior lockdown where the students were still able to move around inside classrooms, but not outside.

“From (the information obtained) we decided to go into a lockdown until we could obtain further information, and then a little while later, we received the OK. The police department told us it was okay to get out of our lockdown,” Scott said.

In addition, there will be a new bathroom across from lake Cena, which will cost $36,000, as well as an outdoor pavilion that will seat around 150 people at picnic tables and costs $38,000.

The bathroom, pavilion, and dock projects are scheduled to be completed

by Apr. 2017. Rutt added, “We will be doing a lily pad kill on Lake Cena at the end of September. This is our second one and it will require at least three total kills before we have them under control according to the study we had done.”

There will be solar powered security, street lighting installed at the parking area and docks, new sidewalks, an outdoor classroom and trail improvements made. These additions will total about $200,000.

Rutt said that students of UCM’s Student Government Association voted on which upgrades and renovations they wanted or deemed most important from a list she provided. It is unknown what other options there were, as they were discarded, but Rutt felt it was important to have the students choose. She had them choose their top 5 from various lists of possible changes.

Courtney Long, a sophomore accountancy major, said that the park is for more than just educational purposes.

“Pertle Springs is a beautiful place to go for pictures or to get some fresh air,” Long said. “It’s a very relaxing environment.”

Jennifer Mittelhauser, a UCM biology professor, said she uses the park as a resource for the courses she teaches by studying organisms living in the lakes.

“It is a very important resource for our undergrad and grad researchers and for the community in general,” Mittlehauser said.

She says the cleaning of the lakes will not affect her student’s studies negatively, it should enhance them by providing more and healthier organisms.

A sea of darkness. One shining light. A solitary woman on the stage.

The music begins and a melodic voice fills the theater. The last note of the song fades and the audience applauds.

“Just being on stage, being someone else, that’s definitely my favorite part,” Eggimann said This is the thrill Leah Eggimann experiences during a show.

Eggimann is a UCM junior theater major who’s performed in several productions on campus, she’s performing in “Footloose” as a dancer, which opened Oct. 4. She has also performed in “Chicago”, “The Taming of the Shrew”, was Mary Lennox in “The Secret Garden,” a soldier in “Nine Circles”, and was Sarah, the blind librarian, in “The Toxic Avenger.”

“I had a lot of fun with that one (Sarah.) Definitely a challenge trying to play a blind person because obviously I’m not blind,” Eggimann said. “It was super hard to portray a character like that. Sarah’s completely opposite of me. She’s super confident in her skin. She’s sexy. She really is super forward with all of that. But

once I finally got into that character, it was a lot of fun.”

Ahafia Jurkiewicz-Miles, junior piano performance major and Eggimann’s best friend, said she has the experience and the skill, along with the charisma, to go far in her career. Jurkiewicz-Miles said Eggimann is valuable to the UCM theater department.

“There a lot of people who work really hard, but there's none quite with the combination of hard working, humble, talented and charismatic. She is the best of what we have here,” Jurkiewicz-Miles said.

Eggimann has been into theater since she was 7 years old. She said she was in her first show when a friend got her to audition for “The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever.”

After that, she said she didn’t do any more theater until middle school. That’s when she performed in “The Music Man,” joined a performance troupe called Youth Players and learned musical theater style singing, dancing and acting. In high school, she joined Y.E.S. Troupe and was varsity for three years. She also attended summer institute-camps at St. Louis University, from ages 8 to 18, where they put on a show every two weeks.

Eggimann’s main inspiration for her love of theater is her aunt and namesake,

Karol Leah Richter, who died at age 27 in 1992. Richter was an actress on a Broadway national touring company.

“Karol was definitely a huge influence in getting me to audition for stuff and my mom always joked about how she never pushed me into theater, all she did was name me after her sister,” Eggimann said.

“Then I kind of fell into it, and she also says I look a lot like her.”

Eggimann not only performs, but she also writes.

Louie Sharp, junior digital media production major, said he first met Eggimann in a poetry writing class and was surprised at how good of a writer she was.

He said with her theater background, she also read the poems well. Sharp said he and Eggimann would go to the Old Drum Open Mic in downtown Warrensburg to listen to her read them.

“She performed it incredibly well and it was very personal,” Sharp said.

Eggimann is not just interested in performing but also the theory, history and technical aspects of theater. That’s why she is applying to study abroad in London at the University of Roehampton. London is the theater capital of the world.

“It’s going to be an adventure. I’ve never been out of the country before. I’m very excited. I’ve always wanted to go to

London,” Eggimann said. “I might as well travel and extend my worldview.”

Levi Taylor, teaching assistant in English, said Eggimann is an inspiration to others and said studying in London would be a great step for her career in theater.

“Her going to London is such a huge deal because it helps her make those international connections, and it helps those across the pond maybe see that American performers are just as dedicated and inspired,” Taylor said.

Taylor said if you have those skills, the crowd can really see it make a difference.

He said Eggimann seems prepared for her future.

“That’s why she’s one of the gems of the theater department right now,” Taylor said.

“Leah’s a freaking gem. I would agree with that,” Sharp said.

Eggimann said after she graduates, she might pursue working with touring companies. She said her dream job is being a Disney princess, but she really just wants to travel.

“That’d be so much fun, being in a different theater every week,” she said. “But I still got some time, and I’ll definitely be auditioning as much as possible. It’s interesting where your paths take you. That’s why I’m not really set on one thing.”

IS THAT A BEAR? Meet Ronon the therapy dog

The black, bear-like dog walks out of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, turning some heads and attracting a small crowd of students.

Some students keep their distance. Others come right up and ask questions.

“What kind of dog is that?”

“Can I pet it?”

“What’s his name?”

His name is Ronon, and he is a 135-pound Newfoundland who spends his days inside the Walter E. Morrow Building. He also walks campus daily with his owner Ken Bias, physical education teacher, or Lauren Borgerding, senior physical education major.

Borgerding has been watching Ronon since he arrived on campus as a puppy almost two years ago. She said she started working with Ronon by volunteering to watch him in Bias’ office while he was in class and that slowly turned into daily walks and some early training.

“When he was learning to sit and stay I would bring him out into the quad,” Borgerding said. “I’d leave the leash on him but I would have him sit and I would walk a few feet away and then I’d release him to come to me.”

Senior Tessa Delap was one of the six students who recently stopped to pet Ronon.

“I’m by the Rec and saw a big dog laying on the grass and I wanted to come pet it,” Delap said. “I love dogs so it made me happy.”

campus, Ronon also provides his services at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Kansas City.

Bias said the therapy work involves specific levels of obedience training.

“They have to go through a series of tests where they’re put into situations that are loud and distracting to see how they react,” Bias said. “They’ll make them interact with people in walkers, people in wheelchairs to make sure they’re OK with that.”

Bias said water rescue is one of a Newfoundland dog’s favorite things to do.

“We got with the local Newfoundland Club and every Saturday and Sunday all summer long we’d go out to this place by Lake Jacomo and do water training,” Bias said.

Their summer training involved making sure Ronon would only rescue the person yelling for help in the water.

“Newfies don’t like people in water so they want to get everyone out of the water, and it took awhile for him to realize if there’s three people in the water, he only goes after the one yelling for help,” Bias said.

Bias said Ronon has many human characteristics. He said his feelings get hurt when Bias has to use a stern tone with him and he’ll pout. And if people pass by without petting him, Ronon is visibly affected. His big brown eyes follow that individual and he looks a little deflated.

“A lot of people judge him because he’s big but he is so soft-hearted,” Bias said.

“I think Ronon would have the attitude of race, gender... it doesn’t matter. All people are people, he loves all people equally.”

Students can see Ronon in action during the upcoming homecoming parade, Bias said. He will be pulling a cart alongside other Newfoundlands with The Heart of America Newfoundland Club on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Five UCM alumni will be presented with awards during the annual Distinguished Alumni Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom.

Barry Davis and Maj. Gen. Karen LeDoux will receive the Distinguished Alumni Awards; Rob Ruth will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service; Chang Bin Yim will receive the Distinguished International Alumni Award and LaTanya Buck will receive the Early Achievers Award.

Rob Ruth’s life was changed when he became a student recruiter after his graduation in 1975. He said he and two other recruiters helped bring students from across the state of Missouri to UCM. “I think because of my experience as a student recruiter, I saw the needs that we had from the university standpoint, that we needed more alumni volunteers out there helping to promote the university in various areas wherever any of our folks live,” Ruth said. “So I got involved on the National Alumni Association Board of Directors and became the president of the National Alumni Association.”

Ruth said when his term was up with the NAI, he was asked to be on the Board of Directors for the UCM Alumni Foundation. He said throughout his time on the board, he had been involved in promoting Mule Nation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, which boasts a large number of alumni.

Ruth said he grew up while at UCM. He was on the baseball team, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and active on the Interfraternity Council. He was also president of the Physical Education Club.

“Some folks say that when they went to the military they went from being a boy to a man, and I think in some respects I went from becoming a boy to a man while I was at UCM,” Ruth said. “Which was really about over a period of six years, from student to being on the faculty for two, so those six years really laid that solid foundation for my business career.”

Chang Bin Yim’s goal is to unite South and North Korea and the 10 million families separated by the Korean War, according to a UCM news release.

Yim graduated from UCM in 1963 with a degree in math and chemistry.

After earning a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Missouri, he started a career with Textile Rubber. He worked his way to the position of vice president as he started some 25 companies that involved exchanged goods between America and Asia.

He became involved with the Korean American Chamber of Commerce in 2000 and served as its president for a year, working with small and medium Korean manufacturing companies and helping to organize the 4,500-some Koreans who travel overseas to do business.

As a result of his achievements, Yim was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Winners of the award are recognized by the U.S. Congress and listed in the Congressional Record. He also received the South Korean government’s highest honor, Mukkungwa, for his work.

Karen LeDoux

Maj. Gen. Karen LeDoux graduated in 1983 with a degree in music, LeDoux thought she was going to become a professional violinist.

Instead, she joined the army and was later mobilized and deployed twice to Southwest Asia in support of military operations in Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, according to a UCM news release. Her most recent assignment was as the commanding general of the 88th Regional Support Command at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

Some of her military leadership roles include serving as a company commander, deputy commander and commander (forward) of the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program Support Unit, G3 Operations 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, brigade commander of the 55th Sustainment Brigade and commanding general 103rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command.

Among her many decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

As a civilian, LeDoux is a program vice-president at the Logistics Management Institute with an ERP business modernization portfolio.

Barry Davis

Two years after graduating with an accounting degree in 1981, Barry Davis joined a large accounting firm in Kansas City called BKD. “We have 36 offices across the United States,” Davis said. “I’m responsible for 13 of those offices… making sure that they are getting what they want and rolling and taking advantage of opportunities in those cities and markets we’re located at.”

Davis said he felt very qualified and able to do the work his career field required of him when he left UCM. “I think that anytime anyone’s going to college, I think you have to obtain the requisite skills and knowledge of your chosen profession,” Davis said. “But I think also it gives you a certain maturity as you’re leaving college the maturity to talk to people at your same level and at the level above you - and no matter where you are in business you have to be able to talk to a lot of people, and I think that some of the classes at UCM definitely enabled me to do that.”

Davis said he would advise current college students to enjoy their college days because they will go by fast.

“You have to make sure that you are definitely paying attention and making sure you’re not skipping out of college or skipping out of classes because it’s very important to take advantage of these opportunities that have been provided to you,” Davis said. “But at the same time, it’s important to be able to balance the academic side of it with the social aspect of it. I think that if you’re successful at balancing those two you’ll have a very successful college career and professional career.”

LaTanya Buck

LaTanya Buck, class of 2002, often joked that she majored in student activities because she was so busy outside of the classroom.

“I was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority… (I also had) several positions within the Association of Black Collegians, I served on the executive board, and I also served as the editor for what was called the New Black Voice,” Buck said. “It was the newsletter publication of the Association of Black Collegians.”

After majoring in public relations during her undergraduate career, Buck returned to UCM for her masters in college student personnel administration. She said she knew she wanted to work specifically in diversity and inclusion early on, so she dedicated most of her career to doing diversity, inclusion and identity work in higher education.

Buck said she was the first person appointed as dean of diversity and inclusion at Princeton University after a task force identified a gap in a position within the student affairs division for a diversity-related position.

“In this role, I have the opportunity to work very closely with our cultural center for equality and cultural understanding, our LGBT center … and then I do a lot of strategic visioning and planning around diversity and inclusion for our division,” Buck said.

Buck said the support and engagement of a lot of the administrators and advisors who were at UCM had a lasting impact on her.

“A lot of them were the reason why I wanted to go into student affairs, and I recall even asking some administrators ‘What did you have to do to do this?’ I didn’t know this was called student affairs at the time, but I did know that I wanted to work with students and help them developmentally and go through the journey of college,” Buck said. “I would certainly say having some of the very engaged and active administrators, advisors and faculty at the time on campus was impactful.”

KYLE ECHOLS' JOURNEY TO UCM: WARRENSBURG VIA ONTARIO

Senior wide receiver Kyle Echols grew up just over 200 miles away from Warrensburg, but the St. Louis, Missouri native traveled nearly 2,000 miles before finally making his way across the state to UCM. Echols grew up playing football, just not as a wide receiver. He started out as a lineman on his Little League team, the U-City Lions.

As one can imagine, his job as a big man didn’t last.

His reassignment, however, wasn’t a result of his inability to play the line.

It, instead, was due to the discovery of Echols' ability to throw the ball.

One day at practice, Echols' coach asked the then lineman to toss a ball to him. Echols executed a near-perfect spiral. Echols’ coach, surprised by the throw, asked him to throw the ball again. Echols duplicated the crisp throw and immediately began partaking in quarterback drills.

The shift to quarterback seemed to be the right fit for Echols. He immediately

excelled in the role and led his team to a Little League championship.

“I led my team to the Little League Super Bowl,” Echols said. “After that, football pretty much had my heart.”

Despite his success at the quarterback position, Echols was forced to move positions once more when his family moved from the city out to the suburbs.

He enrolled in Fort Zumwalt West high school and joined their football program.

The only problem: They already had a starting quarterback.

“I just knew I had to get on the field someway, somehow,” Echols said. “So they moved me to receiver. I was a little shaky at first. It was hard for me to adapt, but it was pretty easy once it came to me.

Ever since then I’ve been playing receiver."

The third position proved to be the charm for Echols as he helped his team make their way deep into the postseason; once to the state quarterfinals and once to the semifinals. Echols earned all-conference honors in the early years of his high school career and eventually went on to be named first team all-state at the conclusion of his senior year.

His high school honors caught the attention of college scouts and Echols committed to play football at Eastern Illinois.

A coaching change at the university, however, caused Echols' scholarship to be revoked, forcing him to take his football career elsewhere.

The heartbreaking news from Eastern Illinois left Echols searching for another outlet to play football. His search led him across the border to a prep school in Ontario, Canada.

Elchols was drawn to the school due to their advertisement of gleaming facilities. He arranged to live with the family of one of his teammates and was, at first, convinced that Ontario may be where he belonged. He had the opportunity to venture into Toronto and his suspension was strengthened by his appreciation of the city.

Although the new environment made a memorable first impression on Echols, he was vastly disappointed once the season began. The program didn’t live up to Echols’ high expectations and after just one game, he left Ontario and took a semester off from school.

ball proved to be too much for Elchols, though, so the next semester he tried his luck again playing in the NCAA; this time with Kansas State.

Echols says he appreciated his time at K-State and met great people along the way, but it was still not exactly where he wanted to be. After a year and a half in Manhattan, Kansas, he was ready to move again.

This time, someone who he met years earlier directed his football journey. Josh Lamberson, the Mules offensive coordinator from 2010-2014, recruited Elchols out of high school and, upon hearing of Echols’ upcoming departure from K-State, persuaded the then redshirt sophomore to come to UCM. Similar to his search for the right position, his search for the right school required a series of changes before he finally found the one that was right for him.

Since his arrival at UCM in 2014, Echols has received honorable mention AllMIAA honors and has over 1,000 yards receiving.

“I’m just thankful to be here now and be a Mule,” Echols said.

Bruises, bars and the boys of fall, 30+ years of wisdom with Gary Pitts

I had the privilege to speak with former Mules linebacker and future UCM Hall of Fame inductee, Gary Pitts, this past week. I asked him to set the scene of a reality that most students can’t imagine: UCM and Mules football over 30 years ago. Here’s what he said:

The Physicality We didn’t do the concussion protocol.

It was live practice; full contact all of the time, so I think the game was probably a little more physical.

Practice was hard. We used to do “3-a-days.” What we did was we would have walkthroughs, offensive line practice and then defensive line practice. It was difficult.

Before we even got into the conference, we played four Division I teams. We were so beat up by the time the conference started, but we were also well prepared because our schedule was so tough. When you look at that record and see we were 6-5, four of those losses were from Division I teams.

The Facilities Practice: We practiced on the old baseball field.

Games: We played on natural grass and the field was always muddy. I mean every game because they had the battle of bands there where all the bands would come and play.

Locker room: We used to dress in an old building. (There’s been) drastic improvement.

The record-setting tackles (fifth alltime): I put in the work in the film room. Being undersized, I really had to understand what the other team’s offense was doing and an-

ticipate their plays before anybody else so I could know what their tendencies were and what they were probably going to do.

And I think that’s why I had a lot tackles; because I watched quite a bit of film and knew what to expect before the ball was hiked.

The Social Scene The social atmosphere was great. The downtown area was great. We had a lot of parties. I think it is important for kids to go to school, but also (important) to make sure you’re enjoying school and it’s not just books all the time. Of course, that’s what you’re there for. I got my bachelor 's degree, which was important for me and my parents, but I also enjoyed myself in school and I loved all of the students that were there. We had fun and we enjoyed everything we did.

Best Bars: Granary, Heroes, and back then (the best place) was The Down Under.

The 1983 MIAA C h a m p i onship Team The year we won the championship was actually (Mule’s Head Coach) Terry Noland’s first year there. It meant a lot because we were expected to be good. We brought in 24 freshmen. We thought some of us could have went Division I, so it was important for us to be successful. We went

on to win that year and it meant a lot to us.

The year that we won the championship, the boys and girls won a national championship in basketball as well. During that time, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals were in the World Series, so there was a lot of stuff going on at the school at that particular time.

We had a lot of support at that time. I was in a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, and all my fraternity brothers would come out. It was big time. We were a good team, so a lot of people wanted to come out and see what we would do.

It was scary at the time. I didn’t know anybody and being about five hours away from the house was kind of difficult for me at first.

I went to a predominantly black school in Oklahoma. It was probably 98% black, so I really wasn’t around a lot of other races besides black. So I think when I got to CMSU and (got to) be around a lot of white guys, I got to build relationships with a lot of guys that I probably never would’ve had the chance to build relationships with had I stayed in Oklahoma. I think that’s what I liked most about CMSU. And I still have those relationships today.

Best in the nation

For just the second time in the program’s existence, Jennies soccer is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the United Coaches Soccer Poll.

The Jennies came into the season ranked No. 5, spent the second and third week of the season at No. 4, jumped to No. 3 the following week, and sat at No. 2 last week before ascending to the top of the rankings.

When examining how the Jennies claimed the top spot in the country, one fact sticks out right away: The Jennies have yet to be scored on through the first 12 games of the season.

If jumping to the top of the polls wasn’t enough for the Jennies, they also set the MIAA record this week following their latest set of shutouts. The Jennies set the MIAA record for consecutive shutouts after posting their 11th shutout in a row in a 3-0 victory over Central Oklahoma on Friday. Their record was extended to 12 just two days later following their 5-0 victory over Northeastern State.

The goalkeeper behind the streak has yet to change since last season. Ana Dilkes served as the Jennies’ goalie through the entirety of all 12 games this season. She set the MIAA record for consecutive goalkeeper shutouts, shattering the previous record of 10, set by Truman State’s Emily Huyck in 2000.

While the record is a groundbreaking feat for Dilkes, shutout victories are not new accomplishments for the senior goalkeeper.

Dilkes’ shutout against Northeastern State brings her career total to 55. She is just five shy of breaking the Division II record set by Chelsea Parise of Grand Valley State in 2012.

Her list of accolades this season goes on: Dilkes has been named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week every week since the start of the season. She also leads Division II with a perfect saves percentage and with zero goals allowed against this season.

Jennies Head Coach Lewis Theobald recognizes that Dilkes is an essential piece of the Jennies success, but he also says it was a team effort that made their season successful up to this point.

“For me, its not just the back line and not just Ana,” Theobald said. “I think it’s defending through the whole team. The front line is channeling and I think we showed some depth coming off the bench. So there’s a big commitment for everybody to defend and that’s limiting other teams’ opportunities.”

The Jennies are not only sound defensively throughout the team, but also are one of the top offenses in the country. The team’s average of four goals per game is the second most in Division II, trailing only Columbus State.

Seven different Jennies have four or more goals on the season.

Abby Rhodes has nine goals and three assists, Jada Scott has scored eight times with three assists, Makayla Toth has seven goals and Baylie Edwards has scored six. Kayla Hamner, Megan Woolley, and Mallory Broady each have four goals.

The Jennies look to remain on top of the polls and extend their shutout streak to 13 as they host Emporia State and Washburn this weekend. The game against Emporia State will take place at 7 p.m.

Friday at the South Recreation Complex and the Jennies will face Washburn at 1 p.m. Sunday at the South Recreation Complex.
