Dist. 88 Rep. Ken King spoke of issues addressed during the state’s 83rd legislative s e s sion du r i ng h i s visit to Muleshoe on Wednesday, Sept. 25. King said his first l e g i s l at ive s e s s i o n was good, but a bit overwhelming, adding t hat t he number of things he had to take in was “like drinking from a fire hose.” According to King, the house considered approximately 6,000 bills during the session, including 11 that he submitted of which about ha l f made it through the legislative process a nd were on their way to the
governor’s desk. “I was happy you left cities alone,” replied Muleshoe City Manager David Brunson, who was among those who attended Wednesday’s town hall meeting. One of the bills King filed, HB 1781, would exempt booster clubs from fees associated with selling items of minimal nutritional value as a fund raiser. “I don’t wa nt my wife, or anyone’s wife going to jail over a pan of brownies,” King said, referring to an incident in which a coach was fined because he was selling a fried food item on school grounds. Although Thursday’s posted agenda for the Muleshoe Area Hospital D i s t r i c t ’s r e g u l a r meeting didn’t include an open forum, t he board listened to local residents who wished to address the issue of physician contracts and announced that a special meeting would be set for Tuesday, Oct. 1, to allow those concerns to be voiced. Because of t he J o u r n a l ’s p r i n t i n g deadline for the Oct. 3 issue, details from the special meeting would not be available until the Oct. 10 issue. Several individuals appeared at the Sept. 26 meeting, and signed i n to add re s s t he board, only to learn after the hospital board members returned from closed session and was about to adjourn that the open forum that is traditionally included on the posted agenda had been inadvertently left off. As has done in past such instances, board president Herb Ramage allowed some of the public in attendance to voice the reason for their concerns prior to calling for Tuesday’s special meeting. “ We ’ve g o t a possibility of losing a really good young physician,” Fred Locker said, while Ruth Locker added that an older
doctor — “who has given his life to the community” — could also leave. In his address to the board, Rhett Kerby said, “My wife is not opposed to driving to Lubbock for health care,” adding that cutting physician wages was “counter productive.” “We have to pay more than Lubbock to attract and keep physicians to Muleshoe,” he added. While an open forum was included, along with a closed session for “deliberation by gover n i ng b o dy of certain providers of health care services,” the only other agenda item listed is possible action regarding the closed session.
