Tipping Off The Southern Arkansas Men’s Basketball team heads into a tricky weekend with two matchups against Arkansas schools - a Thursday trip to Monticello to take on Arkansas-Monticello and a Saturday home matchup versus Harding. The Muleriders are coming off a weekend where they defeated East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma State at home by 14 and nine points, respectively, and saw the Muleriders go into a two-way tie atop the GAC with Oklahoma Baptist as well as receive votes in the NABC poll. The Boll Weevils enter this weekend with a 10-4 record, and a 6-2 record in the GAC. The Boll Weevils are coming off a weekend where they split their home matchups against Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central, winning the former by eight points and losing the latter by five points. The Boll Weevils have three players averaging 10 or more points per game, with Austin Hardy and Darnell Wright leading the way with 13.5 and 13.4 points per game, respectively. Wright also leads the team in blocks (24) and rebounding (7.2 rebounds per game) while also setting the benchmark for field goal percentage (57.3 percent shooting). Hardy is third on the team in rebounding with 6.0 rebounds per game. KJ Lesure is the third player in double-digits, averaging 10.4 points per game. Lesure is also leading the team in assists with 5.3 assists per game, and is tied for most steals on the team (22). Lesure is also a threat from deep, as he is responsible for 31 of the team’s 104 made three-pointers this season. Following this game, the Boll Weevils travel to Arkadelphia to take on Ouachita Baptist. Harding enters this weekend with a 5-9 record
on the season, and 3-5 in the conference. They enter this weekend on a five-game losing streak, and as the only team to beat the Muleriders in a conference game this season. The Bisons are coming out of a weekend where they lost twice at home to Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene by a combined 20 points. The Bisons have not won a game, conference or otherwise, since December 15th when they beat Ouachita by two points. The Bisons are led in scoring by JV Long and Romen Martin. Long is averaging 12.3 points per game, while Martin is averaging 10.3 points per game from the bench. The last time these two teams met, Martin dropped 23 on the Muleriders en route to a one-point victory that day. Long leads the team in minutes on the court this season, playing 475 out of a possible 560 minutes for the Bisons. Long also leads the team in assists (3.5 per game), steals (1.5 per game) and rebounds (5.1 per game). The Muleriders currently boast three players averaging double-digits scoring - Jalen Brooks (11.0 points per game), CJ Elkins (10.4 points per game) and DeVante Brooks (10.3 points per game). DeVante leads the team in rebounding (7.6 per game) and Jalen ranks second (5.9 per game), and DeVante also leads the team in blocks (1.5 per game) with Jalen ranking second (0.9 per game). Aaron Lucas leads the playmaking efforts off the bench, averaging 2.7 assists per game, and Gabe Gilliam was the secondhighest scorer against Southeastern Oklahoma with 11 points in a complete team victory. Next weekend, the Muleriders travel back to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene in two very impactful games to determine the hierarchy of the GAC.
