Abstract

By pairing the unique and wearing physical conditions of open pit Quarry with the contextual situations and Issues that surround them, these often abandoned and overlooked gaps in the earth can be rethought as a new landscape for creating future infrastructures that uniquely address national and global issues that are likely to increasingly effect our world in the future.

The thesis revolves around developing and synthesizing structure from Abandoned quarry. It expounds on the endless possibilities that can metamorphose a mining site into something interactive, profitable and appealing to peoples & societies.

Since the dawn of civilization, minerals have shaped cultures, communities & economics.

Across the globe, mining has witnessed unprecedented growth as an industry, generating wealth, employment, and opportunities for growth.

What remains a concern however, is how mining sites are abandoned and left to degrade after mineral extraction is terminated.

The project ―REVITALISATION OF AN ANANDONED QUARRY‖ attempts to revive neglected stone quarry, from which stone was previously extracted to an Interpretation center with tourism which could complement the dynamics of a quarry site.

1. Introduction

1.1 Quarry: 

What is Quarry: A Quarry or Mine site is where raw materials such as stone or metal is mined for use as building material, tool construction or in industry and manufacturing field. o One of human activity Concerned with extraction of the natural resources. o These operations generally involve removal of overburden, drilling, blasting and crushing of rock materials.



Impacts of Quarrying: Inhabitants of neighbourhoods near quarries are subjected to air pollution from dust, noise pollution from trucks and machinery, and the destruction of what may have once been a beautiful landscape. o Not only do quarries do often negatively impact those who live nearby, but they often leave residual negative impacts on the environment. o Runoff of chemical pollutants into bodies of water, loss of natural habitats, farmland, and vegetation, and natural resource exhaustion are among the most harmful environmental impacts.



Why Abandoned: Once depleted of their desired resources, quarries are frequently abandoned. The resulting gaping holes can fill with water and form dangerous quarry lakes while others are turned into unsightly landfills.

After use of Quarries: It is important because it increases public acceptance of quarrying and shows that former quarry sites are not merely degraded areas, but can give additional value to the land and can even act as a catalyst for the development of a region. Land rehabilitation is an essential part of quarrying and aims at making disturbed areas suitable for new sustainable land uses, and it is disappointing that such practices are not the norm.

1.2 Aim of the project: 

The aim is to develop and synthesize a structure from an abandoned quarry. It expounds on the endless possibilities that can metamorphose a mining site into something interactive, profitable and appealing to peoples and societies.

1.3 Necessity of the project: 

In India, abandoned mines number in the hundreds, causing habitat and vegetation loss. With the quest to redevelop these areas, lies the opportunity to re-imagine the definition of public space and green infrastructure. Using a abandoned quarry as its site, this thesis proposes a plan to reclaim, restore, and reuse the quarry as an alluring recreational green space for the surrounding community and tourism development. This proposal sees what has been abandoned not as waste, put as an opportunity to redefine in order to create dynamic engaging spaces.

Human activities transform the original morphology of the landscape due to the industrial activity in the territory and it also rejects this ‗new‘ situation.

For years together they stay like that wasted, especially in a time where land cost high and lands are very much important.

Many nations rely on this dynamic industry as primary source for generating revenues, employment, private sector growth and infrastructure development. Tourism development is encouraged particularly among the developing countries around the world.

2. Case studies

2.1 Shimao Wonderland International Hotel (Songjiang quarry hotel) :       

Project type: Five-star hotel 2.1.1 Project description: Location: Songjiang, China • one of the greenest and most Architect: Martian jochman audacious hotel development.

2.1.4 Design elements: •

One of the major design elements of the hotel has to be the glass-waterfall-façade, an imaginative, wavy glass curtain that mimics the natural waterfall adjacent to it, cascading seamless from an entrance above the quarry to its water filled base.

•

At the top of the quarry, a grass roof helps the scheme to adopt a low profile, with only two levels emerging above cliff top.

•

Below, levels cascade down the side of the quarry in a spectacular “ glass waterfall” housing a vertical circulation core & observation lifts, flanked by two guest wings,

•

At the base the two lowest levels are sunk underwater, containing guestrooms, restaurants, and an aquarium, while a conference / ballroom center and swimming pools comprise the bottom surface level.

•

Internally, passive sustainable features take advantage of the scheme‘s orientation, low profile, grass roof, and thermal properties of the quaary rock mass and lake, thus creating a unique microclimate that provides summer cooling & winter heating.

2.1.5 Issues prior to redevelopment: The 100 meter, or 330 feet, deep crater was a source of industrial resources since 1950s. The pit is initially abandoned in 2000, and the land was neglected, unsightly and dangerous.

2.1.6 Benefits: The transformation from a resource depleted quarry into a vast amount of job opportunities.

It will also bring many tourists to the area, as the hotel is some what of a Cross between a vacation spot and a theme park. The use of Sustainable energy sources is also an incredible bonus of the hotel and will hopefully inspire similar energy practices in other projects in china.

2.1.7 Drawbacks: The idea of creating a luxury hotel from a depleted quarry is somewhat ostentatious and only benefits an elite few. With hotel rooms starting at $320per night, there is definitely a social class limitation by creating such an establishment. However, with such a lavish exterior and re-use of the land, the issue of being a hazardous eyesore is eliminated and the revenue that will be generated will benefit the developers and workers.

What makes this design project remarkable is its design sensitivity to the former quarry yard’s ecological, historical, and cultural context.

2.2.2 Opportunities & Challenges: •

This project offers opportunities for changing this severely-damaged quarry into one eco-friendly open public space, and the unique space form of the present quarry also provides possibility for designers to construct one unusual landscape.

2.2.3 Site history & Context: 

The old quarry yard operated from the early 1950s to the mid-1980s with the excavated area separately located on the east and west sides. The quarrying operations greatly damaged the landscape resulting in massive soil loss and habitat fragmentation.



Height: Chen mountain is 70 meters high



Past: This hill was one famous tourist sort in this region historically with a good name of ―Chen Mountain Eight Sights‖. This project involves the ecological restoration of abandoned quarry and the recovery of the historic tourism value based on the site condition and traditional context.

Design strategies:



Quarry garden has been divided into three parts based on sufficient site analysis: the lake area, The platform area and the deep pool.



Different design strategies are adopted corresponding to different area conditions to renew the quarry landscape.

1. The lake area: Constructing the surface configuration and enriching the ecological immunity.

2. The Platform area: Improving spatial sequence and opening up sightseeing site.

3. 3. The Deep Pool: Creating dramatic route to connect east-west quarry.

As a Courageous attempt for abandoned quarry renovation, this project has successfully responded to various challenges and displayed the following Characteristics: 1. Restoring ecology of the quarry.

2.4 Keemala resort phuket, Thailand • • • • •

2.4.1 Concept: •

The focus is on the concept of ‗life‘ and ‗village‘ design that provides simple and peaceful vicinity which leading to healthy environment.

• Design concepts focus on the tales of 4 fictitious different tribes that united to form a village called Keemala.

• The overall design leverages on two major components: nature and culture.

2.4.2 Key features: • The design is environmentally sustainable and the construction complements the surrounding ecosystem rather than demolish and create a man made surrounding.

• Layout of the project in overall is designed to be a valley village that provides privacy in zoning arrangement.

• Plantations are mainly food plants such as fruits, vegetables and local herbs in which there are no chemical involved in growing process.

• The tribes culture can be found everywhere in hardscape design to reflect the concept of ‗life‘.

• Present nature, existing topography and trees are kept to their original conditions.

2.4.3 Eco design theme: • The resort‘s 38 pool villas are designed in four different styles. Earth, wanderers, sky and nest each represent a clan of fictitious early Phuket settlers.

• Every villa has its own waste management system.

• The designers of the hotel have reduced usage of natural materials, for example wood, by using environmentally friendly synthetic material instead to protect further deforestation and other environmental impact including transportation.

• The pods, villas and tree houses have been carefully designed so that they appropriately fit into its natural environment.

• Therefore heavy machines were avoided as much as possible, so construction was a challenge. Everything from beginning to end of this project had to reflect the hotel‘s ambition to reflect Keemala‘s culture and stay environmentally friendly.

2.4.4 Mala spa & Keemla Pods • The Mala spa features eight treatment rooms connected by a bridge and water feature. There are two treatment-room types: round pods made of synthetic thatch and square rooms made of clay and cement slab.

• Interiors were inspired by local fishing tools and feature neutral tones uplifted by a splash of blue. Furniture is made of bamboo, carved wood, bronze, and steel. Many treatment rooms feature outdoor showers and shell terrazzo plunge pools.

2.4.4 Accomodation: • Categorized into four different tribes • Tent Pool Villa – Seeking adventure through the art of hunting has been inspired in the design of this style of property. This reflects the tribe that is a born wanderer. The fabrics reveal ease of mobility while dark leather represents stalking instincts.

• Bird Nest Pool Villa

• Clay Pool Cottage – it is believed that people of this tribe excel in agriculture and have a strong bond to earth. Interiorly these are made of clay and dirt. The furniture is made from carved wood and clever patterns are imprinted to tell the tale of the tribe‘s art and culture.

• Tree Pool House – Living life in a high place, the people of this tribe can be found in trees. Therefore, the interior includes hanging furniture with embedded patterns throughout.

Champaner, Pavagadh, Gujarat. (22.485836, 73.518748)

Proposed by: Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB)

•

The Champaner-Pavagadh heritage site is spread over an area of more than 3,280 acres with a buffer zone of 6,950 acres.In addition to the Primary Heritage Zone of 2,429.7 acres.

•

Champaner is a historical city in the state of Gujarat, in western India. It is located in Panchmahal district.

3.2 About site: •

There are approximately seventy-one abandoned quarries spread over an area of 102 hectares of forest land and 94 hectares of revenue land at Champaner-Pavagadh.

•

Following public interest litigation the quarries stopped functioning in the 1990s.

•

The selected site lies in the revenue land and is part of buffer zone of the World Heritage Site of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, Gujarat India.

•

The designation as well as the unique basalt, rhyolite, and sandstone geology; flora; fauna; water; topography; and historical structures make it an ecologically sensitive zone.

•

The abandoned basalt quarry in the World Heritage Site of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, Gujarat India —now redundant use-wise—embodies uncontested material qualities that are instrumental for its own recovery as a site for allocation of a new function, compatible with the current time.

•

It embodies a site where technological heritage, cultural heritage, and environmental heritage are intertwined to create a multispecies landscape that requires innovative strategies for sustainability.

3.4 About Basalt: •

Basalt is an aphanitic extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of lowviscosity lava rich in magnesium and iron (mafic lava) exposed at or very near the surface of a rocky planet or moon. More than 90% of all volcanic rock on Earth is basalt.

•

Basalt is used in construction (e.g. as building blocks or in the groundwork), making cobblestones (from columnar basalt) and in making statues.

•

Heating and extruding basalt yields stone wool, which has potential to be an excellent thermal insulator.

3.6 History of Champaner: •

There are palaces, entrance gates and arches, mosques, tombs and temples, residential complexes, agricultural structures and water installations such as stepwells and tanks, dating from the 8th to the 14th centuries.

•

The Kalika Mata Temple, located on top of the 800 metres (2,600 ft) high Pavagadh Hill, is an important Hindu shrine in the region, attracting large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year.

•

The transition between Hindu and Muslim culture and architecture in the late 15th to early 16th century is documented in the park, particularly the early Islamic and preMughal city that has remained without any change.

•

It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2004.

The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a place of worship and continuous pilgrimage for Hindu believers.

3.9.1 Caste factor: •

Champaner village of PanchMahal has substantial population of Schedule Tribe (ST).

Schedule Tribe (ST) constitutes 28.10 % while Schedule Caste (SC) were 4.10 % of total population in Champaner village.

3.9.2 Work profile: •

In Champaner village out of total population, 1218 were engaged in work activities.

77.67 % of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 22.33 % were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months. Of 1218 workers engaged in Main Work, 98 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 141 were Agricultural labour.

3.9.3 Community factor: •

The main community is Hindu( Brahmins , Banias, Kolis, Charans, Rabaris, and Rathwas) With a few Muslim , Jain and Christian households.

There is a large community of grazers that provides milk and milk products.

3.10 Geography of Pavagadh: •

The setting is undulating hillocks and plateaus.

There are steep rock exposures formed by ancient volcanic eruptions and lava flows.

•

Champaner is located at about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south of Pavagadh Hill. Pavagadh Hill rises to a height of 800 meters (2,600 ft), has a geological setting of reddish-yellow stone, and is considered to be one of the oldest rock formations in India.

•

The highest point of the hill presents an undulating forested topography in the direction of Jambughoda. The Pavagadh Hill has a historical fort where the ancient Kalika Mata Temple is situated. The path to the summit passes through many old gates and cuts through staircase-like natural ledges of rock with precipitous sides.
