Letter from the Chief
While most of us are worrying about the morning commute, our first responders are navigating a landscape where "serving others" can quite literally mean "consuming oneself". In July 2025, I brought this reality to the City Council, emphasizing that employee wellness isn't just a perk; it is a necessary foundation for resilience. The presentation focused on the "Wellness Wheel," a holistic approach covering mental, physical, relationship, and financial health, as well as a spiritual search for meaning, purpose, and connection. By addressing each of these pillars, the city aims to provide the tools and training necessary to save the lives of those who spend their careers saving ours.
The hidden toll of this profession is staggering. The average first responder experiences between 150 and 178 critical incidents throughout their career, compared to just two or three for the average person. This constant exposure contributes to an average law enforcement lifespan of only 66 years, roughly 22 years less than the average American. Furthermore, responders face a significantly increased risk of suicide and are nearly three times more likely to struggle with substance abuse than the general population.
During the past decade, police agencies have seen suicide numbers that far exceed line-of-duty deaths. For example, in 2022, there were 183 law enforcement suicides compared to 118 line-of-duty deaths. These stresses even manifest physically; by the end of a career, brain scans often show measurably increased activity in the amygdala and hippocampus, the areas of the brain associated with trauma and fear.
To combat these trends, the Mukilteo Police Department is taking several proactive steps. Our vision includes creating a culture of support through "trip-wires" to detect burnout early. Dedicated funding from the Mukilteo Police Foundation is used to send members and their families to week-long wellness retreats each year. Additionally, the department is exploring retirement courses to assist with the transition out of service and resiliency training dinners for members and their support groups. These initiatives, which also include access to contracted wellness liaisons, are designed to ensure that the quality and quantity of life for our responders match the dedication they show the city.
A critical component of this success is the support of those we serve. Simple actions, like a friendly wave from your porch or a handwritten thank-you card dropped off at the station, provide a vital boost to a responder’s morale. If you are looking to make a deeper impact, I encourage you to explore the Mukilteo Police Foundation, which helps fund many of these wellness programs. By standing behind our first responders, we ensure that when the community calls for help, the men and women arriving on the scene are healthy, resilient, and ready to serve.
RECREATION
Shaping Mukilteo's Parks, Arts, and Community Spaces
The Parks and Arts Commission (PAC) plays a key role in helping Mukilteo remain a vibrant, creative, and welcoming place to live. This volunteer advisory group works to support and enhance the city’s parks, recreation, and arts opportunities. Over the past two years, PAC has helped guide a variety of community projects, including improvements at Byers Park, collaboration with local volunteers on the Dirt Jump Course near the Community Garden, and partnerships with artists and schools to bring art exhibits to Rosehill Community Center. These efforts reflect the commission’s commitment to creating spaces and programs that bring people together and enrich daily life in Mukilteo. The commission’s work is driven by community input and participation, and residents are encouraged to be part of the process. Serving on a board or commission is a meaningful way to share ideas, represent neighborhood interests, and help shape the future of Mukilteo. Although commission positions are voluntary, their impact is significant—and the Mayor, City Council, and City staff deeply value the time and dedication of those who serve.
Whether you are passionate about parks, public art, trails, or community events, your perspective is welcome. The Parks and Arts Commission meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. All community members are invited and encouraged to attend, learn more, and help continue building a city that reflects the creativity, energy, and spirit of Mukilteo. Why is the Water Orange? Iron-oxide Bacteria and Deposits
An orange, slimy material is likely a result of iron-oxide deposits. When iron bacteria (Sphaerotilus-Leptothrix) “feed” on iron in water, the dissolved iron reacts with oxygen in the air and forms rust-colored iron oxides. Iron-oxide deposits can be found in streams and other water bodies. They often occur on hot, dry days when the water is sluggish. You may also notice an unpleasant odor. Are iron bacterial harmful?
Although water with iron-oxide deposits look strange, this process occurs naturally. It is not toxic to fish and aquatic life and does not pose an environmental health risk. Where does this type of bacteria come from?
Iron is a common element found in water and soils. A small movement of soil in a creek can set off the process of iron bacteria forming iron-oxide deposits. Iron-fixing bacteria are not new. They have probably existed in streams for millions of years!
I also noticed an oily sheen in the stream. What is that?
Oily sheens often indicate that iron bacteria are present. These sheens are different from those caused by petroleum products because they break apart when disturbed. Throw a stick into the water. If the sheen breaks apart, it is probably a result of iron bacteria. If the sheen just ripples but stays together, it may be due to a petroleum product, which can be harmful to people and wildlife, and must be reported and cleaned as soon as possible.
What can we do about iron-oxide deposits?
Because iron bacterial is not harmful, the best thing to do is wait for the water to clear. Dissipation often occurs after a rainstorm. If you see something that you suspect is a spill or water pollution, please call the City of Mukilteo Spill Hotline at 425-263-8088, and we will investigate.
Living Near a Ravine: How Small Choices Protect Slopes, Homes, and Natural Areas
Mukilteo’s ravines are some of our community’s most beautiful and environmentally important features. They provide habitat for wildlife, help manage stormwater, and add to the natural character of our neighborhoods. For residents who live next to or above these steep slopes, a few everyday yard-care decisions can make a big difference in keeping ravines stable and healthy.
Keep Yard Waste Out of Ravines
It can be tempting to toss grass clippings, leaves, or other yard debris over the edge of a slope, but this practice can cause serious problems. Yard waste holds moisture, and when it accumulates on steep slopes it adds both water and weight. Over time, this extra load can weaken the soil and significantly increase the risk of landslides, especially during heavy rains. Yard waste should always be composted properly or disposed of through regular yard-waste services, not placed on ravine slopes.
Protect Native Plants and Natural Ecosystems
Dumping yard debris into ravines can also harm the natural ecosystem. Many cultivated garden plants are non-native species that are not adapted to stabilizing steep slopes. When these plants spread into ravines, they can crowd out native vegetation that plays a critical role in holding soil together and managing water naturally. Native plants have deep, resilient root systems that help prevent erosion and slope failure. Protecting these ecosystems helps preserve both the environment and the long-term stability of the ravine.
Manage Roof and Yard Drainage Carefully
Water management is one of the most important factors in preventing slope failure. If your home has roof drains, yard drains, or other drainage systems that discharge toward a ravine, it’s essential that the water is safely conveyed to the bottom of the ravine through a solid pipe. Allowing water to flow freely onto the slope can saturate soils and increase pressure within the hillside, making landslides more likely. Properly installed drainage piping helps move water away without destabilizing the slope.
Need Help or Have Questions?
If you live near a ravine and would like more information—or if you’re unsure whether your drainage or landscaping practices are safe, the City of Mukilteo Surface Water Department is here to help. Residents can contact the department to schedule a site visit and receive technical guidance tailored to their property. Email: stormwater@mukilteowa.gov or 425.263.8000. By taking a few proactive steps, Mukilteo residents can help protect ravines, reduce landslide risk, and preserve the natural beauty that makes our city such a special place to live.
IRON-OXIDE DEPOSITS OCCUR NATURALLY IN STREAMS, RUNOFF, AND OTHER WATER BODIES AND ARE NOT HARMFUL TO PEOPLE OR WILDLIFE.
