ART EXHIBITS AT ROSEHILL

John Brink May 2025-July 2025

Most of my career was spent as a Scientific and Technical photographer for the Department of Defense. After retiring I have had more time to pursue my interest in landscapes. I switched to digital camera work several years ago, still fascinated with the image on the monitor albeit smaller than the 4 X 5 camera! My artist statement lays in a quote by S. I. Hayakawa: "If you see in any given situation only what everybody else can see, you can be said to be so much a representative of your culture that you are a victim of it."

Kellye Vaughn August 2025-October 2025

Kellye Vaughn is a Mukilteo resident, a massage therapist and landscape photographer who enjoys traveling the Pacific Northwest with camera in hand, as well as abroad. This past year she journeyed to Iceland, the Caribbean and the Big Island of Hawaii, which produced a mix of images that she is excited to share at Rosehill Community Center. With a gift for seeing the beauty in the world, she gives the viewer a glimpse of what captures her eye and fills her spirit, with gratitude and grace.

QUESTION, PERSUADE, REFER SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING

AGES: 18 AND UP

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

The Red Scare that erupted in the 1940s allowed the House Committee on Un-American Activities to grab headlines by parading prominent Hollywood figures before the cameras. The resulting blacklist threw many moviemaking professionals out of work.

The primary goal of the program is to save lives by encouraging drivers to slow down— especially around areas where children and pedestrians are most at risk. Speed is one of the biggest determinants in whether an accident results in a serious injury or fatality, and reducing speeds to the posted speed limits will save lives. An automated traffic camera program protects pedestrians and cyclists by reminding motorists to slow down and obey the speed limits. According to national safety statistics, a pedestrian or cyclist struck by a vehicle going 20 mph has a 95% chance of survival. At speeds above 40 mph, the likelihood of fatality jumps to 80%. These numbers underscore the importance of slowing down and staying alert.

Four fixed traffic cameras will be utilized to enforce speed limits in designated zones:

• School Zone (Northbound): 7700 Block Mukilteo Speedway at Olympic View Middle School

• School Zone (Southbound): 2500 Block Mukilteo Speedway at Olympic View Middle School

• Park Zone (Southbound): 300 Block Mukilteo Speedway at Rosehill Community Park

• Park Zone (Northbound): 9000 Block Mukilteo Speedway at 92nd Street Park

The cameras capture images and video of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limits. When a violation occurs, a Notice of Infraction is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle by the Mukilteo Police Department. The notice includes photographic evidence and a link to view additional images and video footage at www.zerofatality.com.

By encouraging drivers to obey speed limits, the City hopes to create safer streets for everyone in Mukilteo.

Boards and Commissions

The City of Mukilteo encourages residents to actively participate in shaping the future of our community by serving on one of the City’s Boards, Commissions, or Committees. These volunteer roles play a vital part in the City’s policy development process, providing ongoing input to the Mayor and City Council.

Mukilteo’s Boards and Commissions cover a wide range of topics, from historic preservation to diversity, equity, and inclusion. While some are required by state law, others are created by local ordinance or special appointments by the Mayor and Council to address specific needs. All positions, except for the Hearing Examiner, are voluntary and unpaid, but they provide an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community.

Interested residents can complete the online Application for Boards and Committees at any time. To learn more about each Board or Commission and the application process, visit https://mukilteowa.gov/306/.

Edgewater Bridge Closure Update

The Edgewater Bridge Replacement Project is progressing as crews are nearly done with piling placement. The video below shows the drilling process to insert the piling that will support the temporary platforms for construction.

Follow along as the bridge starts to come down

Later this month, we anticipate that crews will begin to dismantle the existing bridge. You can follow along through our live cam at everettwa.gov/edgewater. While most of the work to this point has been below the bridge deck, “off the ground” work will begin soon. Crews will start with sawcutting, and more conventional demolition will follow that.

The Dangers of Feeding Wildlife in Urban Settings

As urban areas continue to expand, the interaction between humans and wildlife becomes more commonplace. While the sight of deer, raccoons, and other animals can be charming, the practice of feeding wildlife in urban settings, such as Mukilteo, presents significant risks and is against municipal codes.

In Mukilteo, as in many other urban areas, municipal codes are established to protect both wildlife and residents. According to Mukilteo Municipal Code, specifically Section 6.18.035, it is illegal to intentionally feed wildlife, including birds, raccoons, and other animals.

The rationale behind these codes includes the following points:

Parking at Lighthouse Park: A Greener Way to

Park

Lighthouse Park is one of Mukilteo’s most treasured escapes, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the waterfront, enjoy scenic views of the Puget Sound, and relax in a peaceful natural setting. Whether you’re planning a quiet afternoon stroll or a vibrant family outing, parking has never been easier.

We’ve embraced a modern, meterless payto-park system that puts convenience and sustainability first. Just scan the QR code displayed on various signs around the park using your smartphone, and pay by the hour—no cash, no paper, and no hassle. This innovative, paperless method not only simplifies your visit but also saves the city thousands of dollars each year while reducing waste.

Come try it for yourself and discover the new, eco-friendly way to park at Mukilteo’s beautiful Lighthouse Park.

1. Public Safety: By prohibiting the feeding of wildlife, the city aims to minimize conflicts between animals and residents. Reducing human-animal interactions decreases the likelihood of aggressive encounters and promotes safer neighborhoods.

2. Wildlife Health: The municipal code aims to protect wildlife from the negative impacts of artificial feeding, allowing animals to thrive in their natural habitats without becoming dependent on human aid.

3. Education and Awareness: The city of Mukilteo aims to educate residents about respecting wildlife and maintaining a healthy distance. This awareness fosters a culture of coexistence that prioritizes the well-being of both wildlife and the human

population.

Feeding wildlife in urban settings, including Mukilteo, is not only against municipal codes but also poses serious risks to both animals and humans. By understanding the implications of this behavior and adhering to local laws, residents can play a crucial role in developing a safe and harmonious living environment. It is vital to appreciate wildlife from a distance, allowing these animals to maintain their natural behaviors and ensuring that they can thrive in their habitats without reliance on human handouts. By fostering a respectful coexistence with wildlife, we can preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of our urban landscapes.

Responsible Public Use of Fire Pits

Mukilteo’s Lighthouse Park, located along the Puget Sound, is a beautiful destination for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and visitors. Among its many amenities, the six fire pits provide an excellent way for the public to enjoy the warmth of a fire while taking in the stunning views of the water and the historic lighthouse. This article highlights guidelines for the responsible use of fire pits at Mukilteo’s Lighthouse Park.

1. Reservation and Permitting

It’s essential to remember that they are on a first-come, first-served basis, and there may be restrictions on their use during certain hours or seasons.

2. Follow Local Fire Regulations

The Mukilteo Fire Department or the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency may issue burn bans during particularly dry seasons, and these rules are enforced to prevent wildfires and protect public safety. Always check for any burn ban notices posted at the park entrance or on local government websites before starting a fire.

SURFACE WATER

Rain Barrel 101

As Spring settles in, us Pacific Northwesterners welcome back a familiar weather pattern: rain. While our dry lawns may be excited for the sudden increase in moisture, not everything benefits in the same way. When it rains, the extra water needs somewhere to go, especially in the city where we have an abundance of impervious surfaces such as pavement. This is why we have storm drains. They take in the extra water and deliver it to nearby waterways, such as Puget Sound. The problem is that the stormwater runoff picks up pollution from our roofs and roads and carries it into the storm drain, negatively impacting water quality. Luckily, we can reduce this pollution by using a rain barrel.

Rain barrels are large barrels designed to capture rainwater runoff from your roof, which can be saved for a later use. When

3. Respect Other Visitors

Lighthouse Park is a public space shared by many, so it’s important to be considerate of others while using the fire pits. Keep the noise level to a minimum.

4. Supervise Children and Pets

Always supervise children and keep them at a safe distance from the fire to prevent burns or other accidents. Always keep pets on a leash and under control to ensure they don’t get too close to the fire.

5. Emergency Preparedness

Always have a bucket of water, a fire extinguisher, or a shovel and sand available to douse a fire in case it becomes dangerous. Do not delay in calling for help by dialing 9-1-1 for an emergency response, if necessary.

6. Respect Wildlife and the Environment

Never throw items such as food wrappers, paper, or plastic into the fire as this can attract wildlife and disrupt the local ecosystem.

7. Leave Only Footprints

8. Be Considerate During Peak Times

During peak times, such as weekends, holidays, or special events, the fire pits at Lighthouse Park can get crowded. If you’ve been using a firepit for an extended period and others are waiting, consider sharing the space or vacating when you’re done so that others can have a turn.

This is especially important in public spaces like Lighthouse Park. After using the fire pit, clean up all your belongings and check the area for any litter. Do not leave behind any firewood, charcoal, or trash. Ensure no embers remain before you leave the area.

stormwater runoff isn’t captured, it collects pollution such as fertilizer and car oil on the way to the storm drain, where it ends up in Puget Sound. By using a rain barrel, you can lessen the amount of pollution that ends up in local waterways. Learn more about setup and maintenance for your rain barrel on Snohomish Conservation District’s website: https://snohomishcd. org/rb-care.

Why collect rainwater? There are a variety of uses for the rainwater collected in a rain barrel. You can use this to water your plants, clean your car, bike, or tools, and provide water to livestock. This can reduce your water bill, especially during the dry summer months.

With so many benefits to collecting rainwater, the choice to install a rain barrel on your property is an easy one. You can place an order now to purchase a rain barrel. Each 55-gallon rain barrel costs $75 plus sales tax and is made of sturdy components including a spigot, overflow

spout, and mesh-covered inlet. To order your barrels please email Ariana Dionisio at adionisio@mukilteowa.gov
