African conference held in Bandung, Indonesia in i955, nationalization of the Suez Canal, the strong Arab anti imperialist feelings, the Arab peoples violent opposition to joining Western pacts designed against the U.S.S.R., regular Israeli raids against the Arab countries, and U.S. withdrawal of the loan needed for construction of the Aswan High Dam. The year 1956 is the year in which the Soviet Union's popularity among the Arab ' people reached an all time high. England, France and Israel invaded Egypt to topple the undisputable leader of the Arab world and Africa. The U.S.S.R. solidly stood in support of the Arabs. This was a factor in foiling the colonial aggression. Wild demonstrations in appreciation of the Soviet stand immediately erupted throughout the entire Arab world. The official anti - Arab unity stand taken by the local Communists in the Middle East, the Communists' attack on the union between Egypt and Syria, and the 1958 - 59 Communist slaughter of thousands of Arab nationalists, of Iraq advocating Arab unity, caused a cooling in ArabSoviet relations. Nasser publicly and strongly verbally attacked the U.S.S.R. After Khrushchev visited Cairo, Moscow's criticism of the U.A.R. ceased. This led to stronger economical and I educational ties between the' two people. 1967 was a very bad year in Arab-Soviet relations. In May of 1967, an Israeli attack against the Arabs was imminent. Nevertheless, upon

Report conciliation with Washington, Moscow assured Cairo that Israel would not attack. However, this advice was almost fatal for the Arabs. 17 airports in Egypt alone were destroyed during the first three hours of June 5,1967. The jamming of the Egyptian electronic defense system by the U.S. sixth fleet, U.S. intelligence information which was available to Israel and the U.S. pilots recruited by the Israeli air force as recently reported by the Soviet press, aided Israel in her aggression. The Israeli attack deep into the western Egyptian desert indicates that the U.S. aircraft carrier or the U.S. bases in Libya may have been used by the Israeli air force. In spite of the U.S.S.R.'s full knowledge that these facts were true, the Soviet Union yet failed to take a more positive stand in support of the Arabs. The Arabs are given only defensive weapons, but not offensive weapons. They are being hard pressed towards a so-called peaceful settlement. Israel receives more than she requests from the U.S.A. Almost five years have passed and Arab lands are still occupied.

F i n d i n g s of W o r l d H e a l t h O r g a n i z a t i o n c o n f i r m t e a c h i n g s of T h e M e s s e n g e r By Charles Simmons UNITED NATIONS - The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared April Seventh as World Health Day with a strong emphasis upon prevention of heart disease, one of the main causes of death throughout the world. ACCORDING TO UN medical experts, heart ailments transcend caste, class, race, sex and age, however, heart attacks occur more often in men than in women and are becoming more frequent at earlier ages. The main factors attributed to the disease are smoking, improper eating habits, lack of regular physical exercise, and hypertension. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in December, 1948 by the UN General Assembly, good health is,a human right, not a priviledge of the affluent, and it is the duty of all governments to provide such for its inhabitants. Says Article 25 of the Declaration: "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well -being of himself and of his family including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, and the right to security in the

The charges grew out of last fall's Pontiac, Illinois State Prison "riot" wherein Hanson and Barber claimed to have suffered injury at the hands of Darnell X. Newton, one of the prison's inmates. Newton will be tried later for aggravated assault against a third guard, Leroy Hornstein. Now he was standing facing his accuser as an all - white jury of "just plain townsfolk" looked on. And if convicted on either one of the two counts it would virtually kill his chances for probation when he faces the board next year. Newton's defense team was composed of four young white people: Attorneys Richard Sletzer and Robert Weaver, who took time off from work with the law firm which employs them to donate their services to Newton. aspiration for early retirement and the medical reasons to remain physically and mentally active as long as possible. Contrary to the advocates of early retirement, the World Health Organization feel that people should remain fully active as long as they are willing and able to, and if the working conditions are not hazardous. One UN consultant to WHO, Professor J.N. Morris has these words about heart disease. "They are diseases like any others. They are not merely the result of aging, or of degeneration with age. They can be treated and some can be prevented. "Second, much can be done to overcome hypertension. People should know their blood pressure level as they do their body weight. If one or the other rises, appropriate action should be taken. "Third, cigarette smoking should be given up; fourth you have your own heart, and also the hearts of your children, in your hands. A thin, muscular and lively child is better prepared for the future than if he is tubby, sedentary and television-addicted. "Five, children should be brought up to enjoy physical exercise and should get enough sleep.'' In many rural areas, hypertension is found only half as often as in the cities. Also, occupation seems to play a part in the appearance of heart disease. Among technical engineering personnel in the Soviet Union, the rate is twice as high as among workers whose jobs apparently cause less mental strain. But this situation is changing, since today's jobs tend to become more and more complex and often lead to increasing nervous tension. HIGH BLOOD pressure often occurs among workers exposed to excessive noise, vibrations, or other unfavourable conditions. For example, the percentage of cases of high blood pressure is higher among production workers, taxi and bus drivers than the population as a whole. Among women, high blood pressure is frequent among telephone operators and less frequent among those working in some textile factories. In the socialist countries, there are increasing means to ensure that workers have periods of leisure and relaxation; there is a growing network of treatment centers and rest homes; there are mass organizations for physical culture and travel (Continued on page 4)

W o r l d H e a l t h O r g a n i z a t i o n confirms associations for workers. There is government effort to improve environmental health, the promotion of balanced diets and similar measures of a general nature. Their aim is not to produce supermen, but to improve the health of the overall population. Free from the class which robs their laborers, those nations' health values are discusses by Dr. E . Chazov of the World Health Organization: "In deve»«,ping preventative measures against hypertension and heart attack, we never lose sight of the important role played by the nervous system, which also needs to be switched off from time to time. This can be achieved by pursuing some hobby that may be manual or artistic or take the form of physical exercise. "While mental relaxation is important, adequate physical activity and a correct diet must not be neglected. "We are against the sort of life in which the individual, after a working day, takes

refuge in trashy books or stretches out on a sofa in front of the television set, or sits drinking with friends. A passive, sedentary life, totally lacking in any creative effort, in physical activity or intellectual stimulation, is at the origin of disturbances in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and leads to further disturbances in the nervous system. "WE ATTACH great importance to human relationships, to character formation, and to education in the widest sense of the term. The spirit of comradship, tact, discretion, self-control and respect for others are not merely moral obligations, but are fundamental for the education of a healthy generation. "They are also important in the prevention of heart diseases... sleeping long enough is another important point. Sleep should be part of a well -regulated life and not the result of taking sleeping pills." "The great majority of men

dying from coronary heart disease," says Dr. M.J. Karovonen, "are cigarette smokers." In Finland, 3,500 working age men die annually from coronary heart disease; of them, an estimated 3,300 are smokers. The fact that coronary mortality among smokers is twice the rate of non-smokers indicates that stopping smoking alone might prevent 1,700 premature deaths per year (in Finland alone)...the pipe and cigar smokers have a smaller coronary risk than the cigarette addicts. Converting cigarette smokers to pipe or cigars appears in principle useful, but nobody has so far studied the fate of such converts. Coronary heart disease and lung cancer are allies in the cigarette death. A wide array of approaches has to be used against the cigarette habit. Education in schools and through the mass media is suggested by the World Health Organization. They further suggest:

NEW YORK - From recent statements on her campaign trail, it seems that Rep. Shirley Chisholm has altered her position on the Middle East for the better. IN THE past Rep. Chisholm had been among the Black political and "movement" figures who had signed petitions supporting Israel's occupation of land seized in the June 1967 war and also Israel's call for more military and economic aid at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. Despite United Nations hearings and resolutions exposing Israel's aggressive, racist and brutal policies in the Middle East, most Black leaders have, in the main, failed to apply progressive principles to the Israeli situation, as they have for example, to the U.S., Vietnamese and South African situations. Rep. Chisholm's position was spelled out in her presidential Campaign Paper Number Two (Shirley Chisholm Speaks out) titled The Middle East Crisis. It is an attempt to appease both the Arabs and the Zionists: " I wish to state first that I personally appreciate the unique problems of Israel and of Jews the world over. I

NEW YORK (LNS) - A veterinarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has come up with new proof that rocking the political boat may be hazardous to your health. He has reported a link between cancer and high social stress — among chickens that is. IN HIS experiments, Dr. W.B. Gross found that chickens set up and rigidly followed a pecking order with one bird being "top chicken" and the others falling in line. Once the pecking order was set, there was little social stress. But when flocks were jumbled repeatedly, making members uncertain of their position, the chickens developed a high incidence of a tumor caused by a virus. His report did not make it clear how his findings might apply to humans. But the Wall St. Journal, which rarely shows much interest in chickens outside of profits, found his report worthy of notice.

However, she fails to mention or support the UN resolution concerning withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied territories. statement case PROSECUTOR HIDES TRUTH ... The prosecutor contends that during the period prior to August 7, I was a mere creature of passion, and not one who was genuinely striving towards the elimination of political repression in the prisons. 'Members of the jury, the prosecutor has evidence that will refute his own contentions — evidence gathered by a whole network of police spies and spies from the Dept. of Corrections on the content of my efforts to free George Jackson, Fletta Drumgo and John Clutchette. But this is the evidence he will not present to you because it will show you the process whereby ^n innocent person can be set up and accused of outrageous crimes. No, he will not bring this evidence before you; he will continue to tell you that I am not the person you see standing before you, but rather an evil,

D E E P LOVE FOR JACKSON FAMILY ...As time progressed, I became closer, not only to Jonathan, but to the entire Jackson family. My love and affection for George grew. However, it was not until I had been arrested and had become, like him, a political prisoner that my relationship with him grew stronger and my affection deeper. ...Jonathan was a unique part of (the Soledad Brothers Defense Committee) for he brought with him the angry frustrations and concerns of a young man who had no memories of his older brother except those which were obscured by prison bars. However, she fails to mention or support the UN resolution concerning withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied territories. THE BROOKLYN Congresswoman asks: "Is it merely a coincidence that this Administration has done virtually nothing to help the Vietnamese refugees and the Palestinian refugees, while it is also steadily eliminating aid to our poor in America ?'' These visits must have left on him of what a prisoner's life was like. Even though he was only 17 years old, Jonathan must have been extremely and intimately sensitive to the plight, the frustrations, the feeling of desperation and futility that men like James McClain, Ruchell Magee and William Christmas must have felt. In retrospect, I now understand the very deep frustrations, the very deep desperation that Jonathan must have been experiencing. My friendship with Jonathan is absolutely no basis whatever for contending that I played some role in the events of August 7, 1970. A delegation of the Socialist Party of Puerto Rico (MPI), made up of Juan Mari Bras and Julio Vives Vazquez, general secretary and president, respectively, of that organization recently visited Cuba. It was the first stop in a tour of a < number of countries by the two men promoting Puerto Rico's independence. One of GRAMMA'S (Cuba's leading newspaper) top reporters interviewed the pro-independence leader Juan Mari Bras to obtain his views on the Puerto Rican scene and the 8th Assembly of the Movement for Puerto Rican Independence, held last November, in which the decision to transform the MPI into Socialist Party of Puerto Rico was adopted. With special arrangement with GRAMMA, MUHAMMAD SPEAKS publishes the following exclusive interview.

By Juana Carrasco HAVANA, Cuba — Juan Mari Bras answered our first question by saying, "The most important resolution of the 8th MPI Assembly was, without a doubt, the establishment of the Socialist Party of Puerto Rico. This represents a qualitative change in the organization of the struggle." T H E P U E R T O Rican leader said the MPI had come to the conclusion that, "The struggle for the independence of Puerto Rico depends on the development of a class and national consciousness among the working classes and especially among the industrial proletariat," and that this was the reason for "the organization of the working class party.''

In describing the importance of the establishment of this party of workers, Mari Bras pointed out that, in Puerto Rico, the industrial proletariat constitutes the vanguard because, "the workers are the victims of the direct consequences of colonial exploitation." He went on to say, "While, on the one hand, the workers have to put up with the high cost of living — since we are subject to United States taxes, and the U.S. merchant marine monopolizes the transportation of commodities between the United States and our island — on the hand, the workers are paid, on the average, one third of what a North American worker gets, despite the fact that they both produce an equal amount." The Puerto Rican leader also pointed out that P.R. suffers from chronic unemployment, estimated at more than 30 per cent of the country's manpower, despite the exodus — a total of 1,800,000 Puerto

Ricans live in the United States. This leads to a depressive spectacle in which more than one third of the population of Puerto Rico is

Plan more egg dishes for the main meal — hard cooked in cream sauces over toast or boiled potato. Souffles, omelets, scrambled, poached, or fried eggs need not be limited to the breakfast hour. Use more dried peas, and beans. Cow peas, chick peas, lima beans, navy beans, and pinto beans can't be topped when seasoned with tasty pieces of smoked, salted, or cured meat. There is a great discrepancy between the amount of money paid the farmer for his raw agricultural product and the price the consumer pays at the grocery story. This discrepancy is getting wider and wider. Until breadwinners and food buyers unite to exercisp political and economic control over high meat prices, why not join many others and observe meatless Tuesdays — and Fridays.

What is it about meat that says a person should eat it every day? A serving of meat in the meal means the body is getting the important nutrient so neccessary for growth, development, and body maintenance. Yes, this nutrient is protein. Meat is also an important source of iron. And iron is essential in building blood. That is why nutritionists say eat two or more servings of meat daily. This is especially true for young children, pregnant woman, and nursing mothers. All these people are experiencing growth and development at an accelerated rate. The question now becomes what less costly foods will give us the same important nutrients found in meat? What less costly foods can be substituted for meat on meatless Tuesdays? demonstration of the fact that the young people are joining the pro-independence struggle — something that didn't happen in the past. Previously, the main problem was the influence of the parents' conservative ideas on their children. Now, the cases of influence of the radical ideas of the children on the parents are becoming more and more frequent. WITH RESPECT TO the stand adopted by the young people, Mari Bras said, "The annexationist policy of the

failed Yankee imperialists in Puerto Rico has failed. They haven't been able to assimilate the people of Puerto Rico — not only those on the island but also those who were forced to emigrate to the United States. "Even among the sector residing in the United States, which represents one third of Puerto Rico's population, and even among the young people born in the United States and raised in the ghettos — many of whom don't even speak Spanish — there is a renewed feeling of patriotism."

EAST PALO ALTO (Nairobi), Cal. — Black educators, deans, superintendents and professors travelled from all over California to the Bay Area community of East Palo Alto to discuss solutions to crised in public education. LESS THAN ten miles, hundreds of Black college and high school students met separately, also seeking solutions to the growing problems they have observed in public education. Many of the conclusions reached by the separate groups seemed to echo the teachings of Messenger Elijah Muhammad and his program of proper education of Black children. One professional workshop suggested that "community support" for "independent Black institutions dedicated to academic freedom," was essential to solving some of the problems. The universal theme sounded by students (who met at Stanford University) and educators (who met in a ghetto elementary school) was unity. Students called for unity, forming a Bay Area alliance of

high school Black students. Educators called for unity among parents, teachers and the grass - roots Black community. Student leaders heard some of the more famous Bay Area Black personalities, including Berkeley Congressman Ron Dellums, the professional expertise of educators such as Warren Haymon, well known assistant superintendent of East Palo Alto's Ravenswood School District. Haymon introduced a case history of the school which earned him his highly respected reputation. The Belle Haven School, the largest school in the 80 pei cent Black school district, hac the poorest reading scores anc accompanying discipline anc motivational problems of anj local school. Hardman, the autopsy states, died of a brain tumor. There is something which links the deaths of these men. Hardman's mother, a registered nurse, called us on January 20th to inform us that she protested to officials in the State Prison in Trenton that her son was showing signs of being drugged by Thorazine. In a letter to Governor Cahill, Mrs. Hardman wrote, "My son was seated on a stool \swaying back and forth, so sedated he could hardly raise his eyelids. I went out to the other room and asked to see a doctor. One of the guards told me to go into the deputy's office..a hSjrDrisbe...who had Chief Deputy on his name pin. I asked him what was wrong with my son, ' that I was a registered nurse and that it was very obvious to me that he was heavily drugged. Mr. Drisbe became very indignant and said, "If he

is drugged, he got it from another prisoner." I answered, 'That is unlikely, my son has not been involved in drugs. " Later she was told that he was "emotionally disturbed" and had been "trying to eat garbage." Mrs. Hardman questioned how her son could get garbage in his cell and insisted that he be treated. She was informed that her son would see a psychiatrist, to which she protested because he was too drugged for a psychiatric evaluation to be valid. Mrs. Hardman called The Fortune Society and said that her son was being moved to the Vroom Building after this visit. On the morning of January 28th a message was left on The Fortune Society's answering service from Mrs. Hardman. The message was, "My son was found dead in his cell last night. **********

Officials at the Vroom Building told Speller's family that he had taken his own life.

R a e i ^ m - academic MLK Afro American Center, Busch reported that his duties were unsurped by a white administrator above him. This occurred after a white secretary employed in the information office openly refused to work under Busch's supervision. "She said outright that she would resign before taking orders from me," The Black Dean asserted. The situation was resolved by retaining the white secretary, while unofficially but effectively demoting him. Furthermore, such racist finagling by white administrators denied him the necessary budget - making power which would ordinarily be exercised by one in his position, as well as the right to select any staff members willing to work under him. ANOTHER VIEW of Busch's predicament was offered by the Rev. Lawrence Carter, Director of the MLK Afro American Center. While firmly attesting to the racism evidenced by Busch's dismissal, he contended that the Black Dean was deliberately chosen by the administration for his moderate views, and for a long time demonstrated a marked willingness to tolerate such racist victimization. Rev. Carter pointed to the fact that Busch never challenged the usurping of duties vital to the well - being of Black students over a period of more than two years. In addition he stated that it was also Busch's strongly anti Black nationalist views that alienated him from Black students, thereby making him an easy target with no student support to deter moves against him. It was these views, which

a t B o s t o n

later came out in a strongly worded statement published by Busch opposing the establishment of a subsidiary Black college, that was his final undoing. Having ruffled the ire of white administators in one other incident by his adamant hiring of a white secretary, Busch's emotionally charged appeal against implementation of an administration - backed plan for the college was apparently too much to tolerate. "My argument was that Black students should be given whatever remedial help they needed to compete on the same academic level with other students, because I don't believe that Black students are inferior to anybody," Busch asserted in explaining his opposition. The enthusiastic support given to the plan by white administrators suggest that Busch's opposition was well taken. Programs similar to the "Black college" idea is now a development in vogue on many predominantly white campuses. Almost without exception they are subject to total control by the ofttime detrimental aims of the larger university structure and have no effective influence over budget matters or policy making. Many racist administrators wholeheartedly support such well - intentioned schemes which in many cases lead to the waiving of many a academic standards, thus seriously watering down academic degrees and the level of skoills attained by Blacks. QUOTING A candid statement made to him by the

U .

newly appointed Dean of the College upon his effective dismissal, Busch reported that the white administrator remarked: "The cards were stacked against you before you came. You were not supposed to stand up and be a responsible man. Your job was conceived in racism." The statement was included in his formal complaint to the Civil Rights Commission. While suggesting "incompetence" as the reason for his removal, the Boston University administration brought no charges against Busch upon termination of his contract. Instead, the dismissal was shrewdly disguished as a "sabbatical leave," granting him eight months of full salary.

Since his contract only stipulated another six months at the institution it was understood that he was not to return. Commenting on the gesture, the former administrator, who accepted the leave, concluded, that's just a little salve to ease their conscience."

Two Black prisoners return to F l o r i d a D e a t h R o w , though w h i t e admits m u r d e r s By Nathaniel 10X "For the crime you have been and stand convicted of be delivered by the sheriff of Jackson County. Be by his safety kept until such time as the governor by warrant may approve. Said warrant directed and within the walls of the permanent electrocution chambers provided by law. You Freddie Pitts and Wilbert Lee be by the proper officers of said prison electrocuted until you be dead, and may God have mercy on your soul." March 15,1972 D.R.Smith Circuit Judge MARIANA, Fla. - After the sentence was announced in the strained atmosphere of the Jackson County courtroom,

Pitts' mother, Mrs. Louise Brooks, began to cry silently. Eight years ago she had given her son up, but for a brief moment here the white authorities had pretended to give him a chance and she had allowed herself to hope. A white woman rose and faced the judge with tears in her eyes. " I hope you have this on your conscience for the rest of your life," she said, then ran from the courtroom. This was the second time the two Black men had been sentenced to die. In 1964 another white judge had issued the same sentence. And for the eight years that followed the sentence, they waited on death row, even to the moment that they were brought to trial.

Now an all - white jury had again found them guilty of first degree murder in the 1963 deaths of two white men, Grover Floyd and Jesse Burkett, despite a confession by a white man that he was guilty of the murders. On the surface it seemed that Pitts and Lee had a good chance when the retrial started. A white man had confessed to the crime and was on hand to testify in their behalf. The state's star witness, a Black woman, had admitted that she lied against them in her original testimony and therefore the state was left with virtually ho witnesses at all. Yet in reality none of this would prove of value to the men. Because they lacked

Japanese jobs TOKYO — The government of Japan recently reported a rise of 0.5 in 1971 labor force and a total of 57,780,000 presently employed. ALTHOUGH the government indicated that the rise was the smallest since 1955 it can in no way compare with the drastic situation in the United States. The overall unemployment figures for Japan according to

the office of the Prime Minister is 1.2 compared to over 7 per cent in the United States and as high as from 20 to 50 per cent for Black Americans, depending on the area or the employment category in question.

S e e k to turn Block M a n a g a i n s t By Allen 3X and Eugene Majied In an apparent effort to turn the Blackman against Messenger Muhammad's Leadership, the Chicago Sun Times, along with numerous newspapers throughout the country, carried an article slandering the Blackman's Saviour, Master Fard Muhammad; and other Officials of the Nation of Islam. THROUGH LIES, distortions, and misquotes, this article was written by Mr. Merv Block and carried over the wires of the Associated Press, Sunday, March 26,1972. Those of us who follow the Honorable Elijah Muhammad are not surprised at seeing the Beast "open his mouth and pour out a flood" (propaganda), as the Bible states in Revelation. For we have been taught and shown, scriptually, that when the man of- sin had been revealed he was angry. To debate whether or not the white man is the Devil, is not our intention here. That fact has been well established by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Nor are we challenging Mr. Block to prove these false and malicious allegations. Minister Yusuf Shah, in representing the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, has done an excellent job on that score. Our aim is to point out the trickery Mr. Block uses with words to try and deceive the unsuspecting Black masses. Mr. Block reveals his evil intentions in the first sentence by saying that the Messenger "teaches that Blacks should live simply so they can give more money to the movement." A distortion! The writer leaves it to the reader to infer that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad sole reason is so i - they can contribute more money to the Nation. He makes no attempt to explain the real reasons the Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches against wasteful spending. A few will suffice here. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad has taught us that by pooling our resources we can feed, clothe, and shelter ourselves and set up industry whereby we can create jobs. Not only has he taught this, but he has put it into practice by purchasing farmland and

Noah to Jesus. This is one of the reasons Messenger Muhammad teaches that the Bible is not "Holy," or pure. Because the white man has tampered with it (see King James' version). This was his biggest trick to Ah mix truth and lie so thoroughly in the Bible that only God, or a / K W 3 5 * man Taught by Him could unravel it so that our people could understand and see "Who is who" (God and devil). The man Whom God Taught is the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. This truth vexes the devil to the point of concocting the most outlandish lie, hoping to hide the Messenger from the people, and plant seeds of doubt in weak followers (who later become hypocrites). Another characteristic of this master liar is that he never bothers to prove anything, because a lie cannot be proven to be other than what it is, a lie. THE DOOM OFT APPRO

(Reprinted by popular request, September 16, 1965)

By Elijah Muhammad

THE MENTALLY DEAD, Lost and Found so-called Negroes must heed the call to return to their own. They have no future to which to look forward to in this world. The blindness (mental death) of the socalled American Negro came to him through his parents, from the slave-master over 100 years ago. This blindness makes him say and do many things which appear ignorant today, in the eyes of the world. It is a pity that we were robbed of the knowledge of ourselves, which is the greatest and most evil robbery of all — to rob a man of the knowledge of himself. We pity the poor physically blind animal in his attempts to go about the business of living. We also pity the physically blind person. But when they are mentally blind to the knowledge of self and of the path to self and to the success of self, our pity is 100 fold more for that person than for one who is physically blind.

This is the condition into which the white slave-master and their children put us. And their children keep up the tradition of their parents. But, thanks be to Allah for opening our eyes to our 400-yearold enemy, the enemy of all of the darker people of the earth. NOW HE SEEKS to make war on all those who are blessed to be trying to see and to understand (resurrect). The white man is by them who are trying to awaken, as a woman is with a young baby crying to get up and she wants to keep him asleep until she can accomplish her daily tasks. She will try first to rock him back to sleep. If this does not work, she will try turning off the lights or blinding the light in the room in order to force the baby to sleep. If this does not work, she will go and

get the baby a piece of sweets or | candy; if it is a very young child,! she will give him a pacifier which is rubber and not the mother's real breast — but a pacifier to make the baby think he is nursing from the breast. This is put on a bottle and it makes him feel satisfied that everything is o.k. But the curdling of the milk soon makes it unfit to drink because exposure to higher temperatures has caused the increase of germs. THE MOTHER seeks any means to keep the baby asleep as her work is hindered by the baby being awake. So it is with us in the world today. Every so-called Negro who seems to be trying to wake up to the knowledge of the truth and to unite with his kind, the enemy hurries over to them, trying to pacify them with rosy promises of a great future — giving them a little better

Broken Images By Jamillah Muhammad Part One SOME OF life's coldest realities are the products of, often ignored, imagery. An image is, a likeness or representation...a picture formed in the mind. The very base of reality exists in the intangible world of psychic imagery. The mother and father of today's, structurally crumbling, Black family unit, must be both conscious and careful of the images they project in the minds of their children. Black children are all virtually insecure, being that white America has systematically, erected so many unavoidable obstructions, in the troubled path from childhood to adulthood. They are compressed by the pressure of two opposite worlds, Black and white, and, rather than assistance, they can expect nothing but opposition to their development.

women of generations to come. Her influence plays the major part in shaping and molding the minds of the youth of our nation, and it is her influence, also, that can either drain the Black man of his manhood or make him a man. So, we may contend that ... through the woman a nation can be produced but also through the woman a nation can be destroyed. THESE FACTS have made the Black woman in America one of the most harmful tools the white world has ever used to keep Black people, as a whole, enslaved, and in the chains of mental bondage. Black women over the past three to four centuries have been the connecting links to the chain reaction of miseducation and mis-guidance that has kept their children in darkness and blind ignorance. The education of our Black children is primarily entrusted to their mothers because, having once been a part of her, housed within her, from the day of birth a baby's keen and perceptive senses magnetically cling to the intelligence she exemplifies.

Sometimes we hear people supposedly "pushing the Program" saying "send your money to Muhammad, he needs it.,, No!..He does not need the money; we need the money in order to establish ourselves as a Nation as all other people. If we are to be a Nation, we must have institutions such as Education, Housing Labor, Finance, Health and Commerce. When you support the call of Messenger Muhammad, you are in reality placing yourselves in position to govern your own affairs and lives as other civilized nations. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad does not view this Center in Chicago as a panacea for all of our ills, but it will be the nucleus of the Nation of Islam in America. MANY OF YOU who are laboring in the Temples around the country should feel ashamed of yourselves trying to compete with Headquarters by attempting to build faster and better than what is here. You are encouraging the poor followers to sacrifice beyond their means to help you to glorify your own individual accomplishments. Why do not you concentrate your efforts to help the Messenger get the Center? This would show more unity and respect for your Leader and Teacher. Of course you must maintain your own Temples and schools, this is well understood. But must you initiate your own local projects to outdue Headquarters? Chicago's Center is yours, it is ours; it is every believer's it belongs to every supporter. All of you who have not

registered with ' Messenger Muhammad, should at least support him. Just a few weeks ago President Nixon pulled the rug out from under your dreams of integration and your school system. His moritorium on busing, so said some of your Black politicians, set you back over a hundred years. If you remember, just prior to that Messenger Muhammad told you it was too late for the devil's politics, his education and his integration. Ironically, Mr. Nixon's stand on busing, was open proof to the truth of Messenger Muhammad's statement. Maybe now, since you did not heed Messenger's Muhammad's warning you can at least appreciate him. Or at least you can appreciate Mr. Nixon for pointing up the fact that his country is for white people and run by white people. Perphaps now you will concentrate your effort towards the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's Program for Black People and hopefully you will strive with him to do something for self. It is so very sad that we have to be begged to do for self. I feel so embarrased for the Messenger of Allah that he has to ask for our help, and for what, so that we can help ourselves. We are over 30 million strong. We spend more wealth than Canada and many other independent countries. Yet we will not even give $1.00 each in a collective effort to help self. Black Man and Women, even if you have never helped any thing or any cause before, makes no difference what your religion or belief may be, just because you're Black, Please Help Messenger Muhammad to Help Ourselves. Most Zionists in the United States fail to realize that this sentiment on the part of AfroAmericans is more deeprooted than the superficial blessings of certain Negroes who raise funds among them and who feel compelled to mouth the Israeli line. Without being anti-Semitic there are many salient facts which the Zionists in America and their Negro endorsors must be award: - Most Black Americans, because of their African heritage, are interested in all white-led nations being out of Africa and now. This includes Israel especially on the Banks of the Suez Canal and other Egyptian land. -The treatment of Black Israelites—who have migrated from America— by the Government of Israel is ugly and racist. -The treatment of the darkskinned middlecast Jews including many African Jews — by the Government of Israel — in a discriminatory way poses annoyances for most Black Americans. U.S. Zionists who export ' millions of American dollars to Israel yearly, greatly cut down on contributions which are needed for housing, narcotics

control, health causes, economic development and the orderly transfer of business purchases in Black communities. THE PRESSURE of making most American Jews contribute to Israeli causes is bad and unrewarding to them. This pressure also extends to others doing business with Zionists. The net result is that Black causes and those of the poor people generally and institutions are denied this money because it goes to Israel. A case in point is the New York Public Library who has had to cut down on its hours open and services because of a lack of funds. This also goes for private schools, colleges and universities. -The Israeli matter is causing polarization between Jews and Blacks in America. The Forest Hills housing development, anti-Black statements on the part of certain Rabbinical associations and by leaders of Jewish service organization are increasing and yet Blacks are being accused unfairly of being anti-semetic.

We believe the State of Israel is a fact of life and that it should be allowed to exist with its well defined territories and not use its military forces to flout international law and occupy the land of its neighbors. It could be that the attitude of Israel with the undue influence of America

Zionists on the foreign policy on the United States could get us into another way. Black Americans are aware of all of these dilemas. James Lawson Harlem Council for Economic Development N.Y.C.

not praise Israel's racist leadership

Dear Mr. Muhammad: I am a constant reader of your paper and would like to congratulate and praise you for the wisdom and insight which so many Blacks don't have. I am a junior high school principal and am constantly telling my faculty about our needs. Almost all of them don't seem to understand the job ahead of us if we (Blacks) are to come into our own. They seem to take it all too lightly for me. They (teachers) see only the top of the situation. But the undercurrent and its implications must be acted • upon. Too many of us will say a Caucasian is "all right," he's one of us, he's got soul, when everyone with an ounce of sense knows so well that a Caucasian is the world's greatest actor. All revolutions have been led by the middle class, but the backbone of the fighting was done by the masses. We must lead our brothers down a path of victory. Black leaders thus far are not leaders at all. Some of us are praising the Zionists. He is a rotten character. How can any Black man relish a Zionist Jew? How can a Black man relish a (racist white)? I read several weeks ago in the Morning Advocate where

We, of the Harlem Council of Economic Development suggest to the Congressional Black Caucus before they give unqualified endorsement of Israel and criticize those who take this Nation to task—to seriously study the Black concern of this problem. Any nation which refuses to obey the resolutions of the United Nation mandate on the settlement of the Middle East situation bears watching and question. Any nation which would defile the City of Jerusalem with ambitious housing projects, etc., when

Police state advocates n a t i o n a l identity CAMBRIDGE, Mass — On March 6, 1972, the Senate Finance Committee announced a plan to require all US citizens to be fingerprinted and given a Social Security number on one of three occasions — entering school at age 6, immigrating to the US, or when applying for wclf src ALTHOUGH THE so-called purpose of the plan is to stop the "welfare cheater" and the "illegal alien," the measure is planned to make legal an already illegal practice of using the Social Security number and photo ID as the accepted form of identification and the collection and distribution of the biographic data that is compiled under the SS number. Already millions of people in this country have been forced to obtain these indentity documents as high school and college ID cards, work ID's, credit and bank cards, IDs for the elderly and the blind, internal governmental security, press and police IDs, transportation services and taxi drivers, and now airport security, etc. This is a pass system, the only problem that remains in establishing a National Identity System is to photograph, number, and code

In Cambridge, although the students were photographed and given ID numbers, the ID cards have not been given out due to the protest by the Cambridge High and Latin Black Student Union. The system that was used takes four photos of each student at once. In Arlington the plan was laid aside after parents began to question the need for IDs, but it has been officially dismissed. The cards have stated that the ID must be produced upon demand of an authorized person or school official; no one knows who is an authorized person. And that the card must be carried on person at all times — this does not seem to be an ID card for use only in the high school. OTHER PLOYS have been

National Identity Systems have been used as a means of control by fascist governments historically and by the CIA under AID Public Safety Programs in Third World countries.

Other states have gone a step further. South Carolina passed a law allowing school children to be fingerprinted for their IDs. The same law has just become an issue in Rhode Island along with IDs for junior high students. Richmond, Ga., has already issued IDs to elementary school children as a pass for busing; those IDs were burned this March in an anti-busing protest. The students' placards said: "WE DONT NEED IDs OUR PARENTS KNOW WHO WE ARE!" This outlines only part of the National Identity System that has been developed in this country since 1966. The issuing of ID cards with Social security has slowly phased out the old and equally useful method of identifying oneself with name and signature. The new standard has been subtly changed without notice or the

It will compile information on employment opportunities, day - care facilities, health care, scholarship information, educational opportunities, legal assistance, and welfare rights.

NEW YORK - Dorothy I . Height, President of the National Council of Negro Women, announced today the inauguration of a Black Women's Institute, an educational and research program designed to collect, interpret and distribute information for and about Black women and their families. THE BLACK Women's Institute will provide a channel for research and publication of information about Black women, their social, legal, economic and educational status, according to its officers.

The event inaugurating the Black Women's Institute will be a 1972 Hunger Convocation. With the cooperation and support of a wide range of seriously concerned Americans from 93 national and local organizations, the Convocation will focus attention on the prevalence of hunger in America today and to determine a realistic course of action to end hunger.

While the Communists make lews to protect their own race they continue to prod us to accept 14,000,000 Negroes as social equals and we ere doing everything possible to please them. Hadlo announcers beg us to do this for strength and unity . . . Is India strong aid united? She once had a white race. Africans tell Wilkins: 'We s e e k isolation o f S. not concessions f r o m By Charles Simmons (U.N. Correspondent) UNITED NATIONS - Two petitioners from the African National Conference appearing before the National Committee on Apartheid criticized reported statements by Roy Wilkins during his current visit to South Africa. DURING THE subsequent questioning of the petitioners, a committee member suggested that Wilkins might be invited to appear before the committee on his return to the United States. Robert Resha and Thami Mhlambiso of the African National Congress, appearing before the committee at their request, said that the reported statement by Wilkins undermined the efforts of the United Nations and the organization of African Unity regarding apartheid. They urged the isolation of South Africa by the international community.

Mhlambiso said the South African government was "engaging in a policy of genocide" against Blacks, and visits like that of Mr. Wilkins did not improve the situation. , He was "indignant" about what Wilkins was reported to have said. "Such people are in fact the enemies of the Africans. They undermine the efforts of the United Nations and of the liberation movement." He said it was "significant" that Wilkins had taken the platform in South Africa to make these statements at a time of growing opposition in the United States to U.S.

business involvement in South Africa. Resha said it was interesting to note that Wilkins had gone to Israel before going to South Africa. He said, "Find out who he represents and who sent him." J. O. Edremoda of Nigeria said it seemed to him that Wilkins' reported statements were "incompatible" with Wilkins' own position in the United States civil rights movement. He asked if the petitioners would have any objection to an invitation to Wilkins to appear before the United Nations (Continued on page 25)

Black cab driver beaten,

refused

to p a y off thugs J By Samuel 17X CHICAGO — The two white policemen stood idly by as the two Black security guards struck blow upon blow against the head, face, arms and body of the young Black cab driver. MADLY YELLING, "We'll kill you, man, we'll kill you," the Wackenhut Security Corporation guards reportedly had a strong motive for beating the driver, 28-year-old Eugene McNair, into limp unconsciousness. They were angry because he had refused an earlier suggestion that he kickback about $5 per week from his cab fees to come to the station and drive some of the many passengers away from one of the world's busiest bus stations, Chicago's Greyhound. McNair said he refused to make the "kickback" because he needed all'the money he earned to support his wife and five children, including a new baby. He told Muhammad Speaks that he's also buying a home. His punishment for refusing

to make the "kickback" began early that recent morning a few hours after midnight. He had parked his cab adjacent to Greyhound's Clark Street entrance. About six or seven other cabs were in front of him. Instead of standing inside the station as usual, he and the other drivers stood on the sidewalk after guards ordered them outside the station. Suddenly one of the guards came walking out the station's door. Another followed him. According to witnesses, the first guard "pretended that he was writing on a piece of paper" until he got close to McNair. Then "he began cursing me out," McNair said. The other guard joined his partner. They both unsnapped the straps on their guns and pulled the batons from their sides. Then grabbing his collar, ripping his shirt, they began beating him with their fists and batons. At first, McNair asked them to take off their guns so that he could "fight them like a man."

ATLANTA — Three Black college students in Atlanta won a stunning upset election victory as delegates to the Democratic National Convention. In their efforts to win delegate seats, the students campaigned on the campuses and in the surrounding communities which comprised the Fifth District. Mass rallies were held, including one addressed by Rep. Shirley Chisholm (the only Presidential candidate who personally southt and won their support)* Students forgot about playing bid whist and passed out leaflets to voters on their way to work. In order to win a candidate had to have a majority of the votes cast for his position or^ else the two top vote-getters in" each slot would have to have a run -off. In the first round of balloting, much to everyone's surprise, the three students had won the right to a run-off, defeating established politicians, including a state party chairman. The student candidates had strong competition in the runoff but they won handily, defeating such political stalwarts as State Sen. Leroy Johnson, who has never been defeated politically, State Rep. Grace Hamilton and white attorney, Irving Kaller. The youngsters gave as their reasons for victory: a wellorganized campaign, defeat of professional politicians because of their commitment to address themselves to the rights and needs of Black and other poor people, their running specific issues as candidates and their stating their presidential preference for Rep. Shirley Chisholm.

The Foundations:

By D.C. Forbes Special To Muhammad Speaks CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — One of the most serious problems faced by the small group of rich men who control U.S. society is how to continue to oppose democracy and social progress while tricking the public into thinking their society's leaders stand for freedom, peace, democracy and progress. ONE LOOK at the poverty, decay, crime, degeneracy and conflict spread throughout U.S. society will convince anyone that this task of fooling the mass of citizens is indeed a hard one. And like other hard and criminal tasks set by those dictating over this society — such as the task of crushing the people of Southeast Asia — this one receives money and other forms of investment that ought to go to constructive

programs. A major device chosen by the super - rich to conceal their efforts to spread their views, concepts and theories across every field of human communication is the "private" or "benevolent" fund commonly called a "foundation" and sometimes a "charity," or "philanthropic organization." Philanthropy is a word adopted from the Greeks. Its loose meaning is "love of.

people." Naturally, as they do with most of their words representing high and mighty principles, U.S. rulers use the words "nhilanthropic" and "benevolent fund" to carry out intentions opposite to those the words suggest. Blflck people especially have seen the growing influence of foundations. The great majority of civil rights, community control, political and educational organizations originally formed to help our ! people gain a better standard of living and a stronger ' influence within and upon power - making bodies, are now dominated by foundations. struggle, protected by politicians in their pay, staffed with uncounted thousands of security - seeking middle class bureaucrats as well as obedient servants desperate to escape the "lower depths," the giant family and corporate foundations have so far found it as easy to strip away many of the "leaders" of the Black liberation movement as a farmer plucks feathers off a future chicken dinner. SOME BLACKS DEFEND FOUNDATIONS Many Black people — especially those given a "piece of the action" from foundations — get angry when someone suggests foundations are a part of the problem and not a part of the solution. They say, "Are you crazy? Without money from these grants I'd be lost. I wouldn't have a job. Or if I had a job it would be at some heavy - work job with low pay and none of the action you can get from expense accounts." No one can argue with that. The foundations do provide a few Blacks with upper middle class incomes and many other Blacks with office work and other non - physical jobs that permit them to escape from

the industry and service occupations held by 97% of the Black population of the U.S. when jobs are available. It would be wrong to tell Blacks to give up the money that filters through foundation grants. Just as wrong as it is to tell an autoworker or hospital employee that they should give up their jobs, or get senselessly fired, just because "General Motors is a racist exploiter," as the phrase goes. Or because the hospital where they work is "run by capitalists;" or because such and - such coporation is "imperialist and doesn't relate to the Black community." Almost any crime you can accuse the ruling families of committing with their monopolies and their foundations is true. But while they own and control our labor and the fruits of our labor it is foolish to believe we can get economically disentangled from them. This can only happen when they no longer run the economy and the politics and cultural life growing out of that economy. We must, however, face the fact that their control is "exceeding deep," as the Bible says. And to end this control (Continued on page 28)

we must see clearly its form and its instruments. HOW FOUNDATIONS PAY OFF' What, then, are the •foundations? Where did they come from? Why were they set up? Who runs them? What are they being used to do? Put simply, foundations are legal bodies designed to receive special forms of investments by the rich people who own the economy. They are investments designed to "pay off" just as a mine or hospital is designed to pay off. The mine, or hospital, is not set the task of "paying off" in terms of meeting a specific production plan to fill the housing and health needs of a given section of the public living in a given area. They are designed to pay off in profits, profits which go back into the hands of individuals holding personal ownership of the mine or hospital. company or corporation.) This pay off — received not from anything the investor has done but solely through the toil of people the investor or investors have hired — takes a slightly different form when foundations are the capital vehicle. Foundations receive investments designed to pay

off in maintaining the system that allows the people who own the economic enterprises to hold this socially unequal power. Foundations also pay off in tax write -offs. And foundations also pay off by influencing the public through the mass media, through schools and colleges, through culture and through

civic organizations, influencing the public to think and do things that will prevent or at least weaken their conscious opposition to the elite group that sits on top of this particular kind of society. REGIONS OF THE KINGDOM OF MONOPOLY Between economic control and the political control used

to maintain the economic control is the broad realm of the moods, the opinions, the religious feelings, the "social psychology," the ideology of the- bulk of the people in the boundaries of a multi national state. It is within this broad realm that the kingdom of the foundations lies. The borders of this kingdom touch those of the economic kingdom on one hand and the political kingdom on the other. And the "royalty" of the U.S. super rich naturally mix freely within the royal courts of each of these kingdoms. Their foundations help coordinate the anti - human activity of all three kingdoms of monopoly. Why have foundations increased rapidly in the 20th century? Weaknesses in the power of the society's rulers have grown in this period, creating the need for mor3 subtle tactics in the struggle for people's minds. Today dentists are straightening the teeth of adults too. IN ADULTS however, the requirements for orthodontics (the movement of teeth) are far stiffer than for children. Every part of a child's body is growing. If a tooth is moved ever so slowly, growth takes up the slack. Not so in adults. If gums or jaw tissues are deteriorating from dental disease (periodontal disease — pyorrhea) moving teeth around cannot be undertaken until a healthy mouth is first brought about. The primary requirement for an adult desirous of having orthodontics undertaken, is that the entire mouth be in a healthy state. Age has very little to do with it. Teeth can be moved in the 60 year old as well as the 10 year old. As long as the teeth are sound and the gums firm and healthy and the jawbone is sound, tooth movement is possible. Of course orthodontics in adults have some limits, but the teeth are moved in the same way. In some cases, bands are cemented to the teeth to which wires are attached to effect the tooth

movement, whereas in other cases removable appliances using springs or elastic bands may do the job. In the process, the tissues surrounding the teeth are put through some tough paces. As a tooth moves, gum and bone must fill the voids created in certain spots due to pressures that force the teeth to tilt or move. Gum and bone get out of the way in one spot and must be deposited in another. Because such tissue change is limited in adults, the patient and the dentist have to decide on realistic goals before treatment begins. Therefore, although adult teeth can still be moved, the shifting must be more conservative than in youngsters, and compromises with nature must sometimes be made. The dentist might remove a tooth to create a needed space rather than trying to expand the arch in an attempt to move out all the teeth along the arch. Some adults reject orthodontics because they feel that the metal appliances will be unsightly. But more men and women who have had teeth straightened are surprised to find their braces are seldom noticed and when they are, they serve as conversation pieces. But let me ask you, what is more unsightly then bucked, badly crowded or picket fence teeth that one is stuck with all his life and are seen everyday by everyone the person comes in contact with? I think I would choose the orthodontics. At least when that's over, even if it takes a year or two, I know I will have changed my appearance for the better.

STUDENTS AT Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tenn., try to save life of aged, malnourished man. Many Black health officials are suggesting that doctors whose education has been funded in whole or in part by tax dollars (which includes all med students) should be assigned two to four year 'tours of duty' in poverty - stricken communities, just as military academy graduates must serve in national defense outfits. Following 'tours' doctor could then remain or practice elsewhere.

Diggs bill w o u l d l i m i t p r o f i t s of racist companies their support for the millions of Blacks suffering under the racist government. UNLIKE ROY Wilkins, executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who only slapped the wrists of U.S. companies operating in South Africa by saying they should "make greater efforts" to upgrade their Black workers and give them equal pay with whites, the Michigan congressman welcomed the decision of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to open hearings of the role of U.S. multi - national corporations in shaping U.S. foreign policy. Most of the firms who refused to respond to Diggs' questionaire are active lobbyists for easing U.S. foreign policy toward South Africa. Many of the Black Caucus members feel that the continued use of cheap labor by U.S. firms in South Africa harms the labor problem in the U.S. The granting of permission to U.S. firms to relocate in countries where the labor market is cheaper than the U.S. is one of the primary causes of the unemployment problem in America. Thousands of the unemployed in this country today are the direct result of greedy run away firms who have been allowed to disband their firms here to take advantage of the cheap and plentiful labor supply in foreign countries. Under the bill as proposed by Diggs, a corporation would lose its government contracts unless it could prove its employment practices in Southern Africa included "equal pay for equal work" for both Black and white workers.

WASHINGTON - In one of his strongest statements against United States' policies toward South Africa Rep. Charles Diggs (D-Mich.) blasted the Nixon Administrations' lifting of the, United Nations - initiated embargo against trade with the fascist regime of Rhodesia and South Africa. COMMENTING ON a bill he introduced in Congress, Diggs, chairman of the House sub committee on Africa and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, attacked the permissiveness of the U.S. government in allowing U.S. corporations to invest over $860 million in the Republic of South Africa. In his attack, he accused the U.S. government of concealing the total extent of U.S. corporate financial interests in the apartheid oriented countries of South Africa. Diggs disclosed that a questionaire sent by him last summer to 250 firms requesting information on their investments in South Africa has been ignored by over half of the firms, including the controversial International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT), Chrysler, Ford, Coca - Cola, Armco Steel Corp., Union Carbide, Westinghouse and International Harvester. In his discussion with reporters, Rep. Diggs praised the refusal of Black longshoremen in New Orleans for their refusal to unload shipments of chromium from Rhodesia. Approached by Black students from Southern University in New Orleans, who brought the nation's attention to the shipment of ore by staging a protest march on New (Mean's docks, the Black longshoremen showed I i l / r l C

The bill also calls for equality of fringe benefits, hiring, training and opportunity for advancement. The administration of his program as presented could be governed by the Office of Contract Compliance which is supposed to police U.S. defense contractors to ensure equality of job opportunities in the U.S. Diggs stated that the Black Caucus has requested an opportunity to testify in the hearing on U.S. investments in Africa. He feels his legislation which is co - sponsored by 23 other House members, will help combat "participation by U.S. business in the exploitation of labor and racial practices in southern Africa."

OUTSPOKEN ADVOCATE to change U.S. government policy which allows U.S. corporations to relocate in southern Africa for sole purpose of massive exploitation of cheap and plentiful labor market, Michigan Representative Charles Diggs, has initiated legislation to counteract racist policies of greedy and callous U.S. firms.

U.S. fears European support of Prof. Davis THE VOICE of America , Radio Free Europe and other propaganda bureaus spreading false accounts of "democracy" and "freedom" and "opportunity for all" in the United States have been assigned the task of countering the widespread support of Angela Davis in Western and Eastern European countries. A 20-man task squad has been funded to tell Europeans, among whom Prof. Davis has deep, grass-roots support because of the work of defense committees in almost every European country, that Angela's trial is still an example of the freedom and justice guaranteed to US citizens. THE TASK FORCE is dodging the issue of the abuse of Black prisoners, which sparked Prof. Davis' controversies with California political and educational authorities. They are also avoiding the issue of freedom of education. Prof. Davis' right to teach at UCLA was attacked simply because of her political beliefs. This is another issue the propaganda team will ignore. IT WILL also ignore the denial of bail to Prof. Davis and the denial of her right to speak and travel. What the special team will concentrate upon is the fact that the government "permits" people to organize in defense of Prof. Davis. Recent appearences by show business figures who ducked such activities before may be a part of the government's plans to distort and conceal facts which reveal its anti-democratic, racist and brutal policies.

L o u i s i a n a officials defend c o m p a n i e s ' 'right' to p o i s o n NEW ORLEANS - The health of some 1.5 million people is being endangered by Louisiana corporations who dump filthy waste material into the Mississippi River, a recent report says. THE FILTH endangers the health of the people by contaminating the river's fish as well as water plants which use the river as a source of raw water. It also threatens to change the ecology of the Gulf of Mexico. The report, drafted by the Environmental Protection Agency, says that by dumping

heavy metals and organic compounds in the river, the corporations are threatening human and aquatic life. Although certain corporations in he state claim to be taking steps to reduce water pollution, they generally share the attitude of Robert Lafleur, who says he does not believe human health is endangered by the companies' waste in the waters. Lafleur is excutive secretary of the Louisiana Stream Control Commission, a state agency highly influenced by the corporations.

40 acres and a grape: Dividing the poor WASHINGTON D.C. (LNS) The U.S. Government will give you forty acres of land in Oklahoma for free, lend you power saws to clear the land, loan you money to build your home and even give you vines to start a grape crop. After three years your vineyard should be bridging in $7,000 a year for your family. The only catch is that you have to be on welfare or some other sort of public assistance! A neat deal? For the

Government and the large grape corporations it is. The idea is to get poor people to start new vineyards and then produce scab grapes, in order to break the boycott of nonunion grapes and the organizing of farm workers. Over the past few years, the Department of Defense has bought huge quantities of nonunion grapes. Even Spiro Agnew did his part. He bought $30,000 worth of grapes for his inauguration.
