1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1

Abstract

Architecture of people, place and time, a role in making a place civilized by making a community livable.

Encouraging design to be more sensitive to issues on given site and context. Proposal and design is to reflect and adhere to idea of KL as an Asian City of the future.

Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment, the aim is to resolve social issues pertinent within the conditions of the urban landscape. Located in an urban area, the project aims to further develop the site, in which it will address the social needs of a particular urban place and provide interaction and connection of people in the urban spaces.

Proposed sites is within and alongside the River for Life Project (ROL). The River of Life plan calls for the cleaning of the entire river, while beautification and development works will be carried out along a 10.7km stretch in downtown KL. The ROL project which starter 2012, opens great opportunities for students to take part in, proposing new architectural ideas and further aide its realization.

1.2

Introduction

The proposed site suggests the development of Centre for Arts and Performance, targeting to provide a program for art exchange between artist and community. The site is located in one of the most well connected area with public transport. The design intention is to achieve a public building so as to make it welcoming for the users and the community around. The building accommodates spaces for theater performance, art workshop with various public spaces such as exhibition gallery and artist accommodations.

2.0 SITE INVESTIGATION & CONTEXTUAL STUDIES

2.1

INTRODUCTION

PRECINCT 6, KUALA LUMPUR Kuala Lumpur is a Federal Territory has an area of 243 km2 (94 sq mi) which consists of the city center and its surrounding urban areas, managed by the KL City Hall. It also merges with the adjacent satellite cities of Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Port Klang, Ampang, Selayang/Rawang, Kajang, Puchong, and Sepang, all in the state of Selangor, which enclaves KL, and all with their separate local authorities, creating a huge metropolis called Greater Kuala Lumpur, or more commonly, Klang Valley. It is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in South-East Asia, in both population and economic development. Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia, home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King, the Istana Negara.

The proposed site is located at precinct 6 next to Jalan Raja Laut, one of the 11 precincts located along the 10.7km River of life projects. It is within 200m radius of precinct 7, which is the historical, geographical and social heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Due to the site is located within the administrative buildings there is more circulation during the working hours in weekdays compare to weekend. There isn’t much entertainment or activities that could compensate with the working life in this formal administrative centre there is no continuity along Jalan Raja Laut and other landmarks, despite being within a 200m radius of the heritage quarters, precinct 7

Kuala Lumpur was formed from the Klang-Gombak River in 1857. It grew into an industrial city, and shop houses were built at Masjid Jamek where the two rivers meet.

Due to rapid modernization, the river is deemed unsuitable for human contact and the city and its’ skyline became very dense

MICRO SITE ANALYSIS

SWOT ANALYSIS STRENGHT -The site is easily accessible by the surrounding major roads and well connected by the public transport. Moreover the public transport around the site is well managed and distributed WEAKNESS -There are no major community around the site. Since the site is located at the administrative district there area very few passers-by around the site during non-peak hours

OPPORTUNITY -The existing Gombak river located next to the site could potentially enlightened the place. Waterfront development can be proposed responding to the river of life project.

-There is a high demand for entertainments facilities which are seem to be very little in the area. High activity during peak hours.

THREAT -Noise and vibration from the LRT can be problematic.

-Water pollution of Gombak river can be an issue since River Of Life project has not achieved its goal.

Specificity

The new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is located in Museum Park, part of the redeveloping downtown waterfront on Biscayne Bay. Its direct neighbors are the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science and a major freeway, connecting mainland Miami with Miami Beach. Simultaneously oriented towards the park, the water and the city, the new PAMM is an open and inviting structure from all sides alike.

Miami is known for its iconic art deco district, decorated boxes with no great relationship and exchange between inside and outside. What makes Miami so extraordinary however, is its amazing climate, lush vegetation and cultural diversity.

DESIGN INTENTION

Centre for Arts and Performance is proposed to introduced and foster the enjoyment, understanding and development the art community.

This project has an intention to instill a community in an area which has no active community. The aim is to achieve a stop point or a gathering space on the site. The site is rich in pedestrian traffic and is well connected to the various public transport routes, hence providing opportunities to design something substantially constructive.

CROSS-SECTION CUTTING ACROSS THE GOMBAK RIVER UP TO JALAN RAJA LAUT Menara UOB located opposite to the site across Jalan Raja Laut has significant shadow effect on the site as shown in the image above. In addition 40% - 50% of the site is shaded between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., however after 2p.m. 30% to 40% of the site shaded by the Bandarraya LRT trak and the existing trees.

Based sun shading analysis double skin facade is adopted on the East and West side of the building, thus minimizing the heat gain from morning and afternoon sun. Moreover, the exiting trees surrounding the site act as a shading device for Arts and Performance center.

NATURAL VENTILATION

Due to the presence of high risers around our site the wind direction isnt really set since these builds change the route or the directions of the flowing winds.

The site recives prevailing wind from Gombak river, which induces the wind from the water surface towards the Arts & Performance Centre creating micro climate. As the air passes through the water surface it reduces the temperature of the breeze allowing cool breeze to ventilate the building.

EAST ELEVATION

In addition perforated facade is adopted on the west and east side of the building to allow possible prevailing wind to pass through. By balancing light & ventilation, perforated metal can allow to manage interior heat build-up from the sun. By deflecting heat, less energy output is required therefore providing a more consistent interior temperature.

RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM

RAIN WATER HARVESTING TANK

The characteristic features of the climate of Malaysia are uniform temperature, high humidity and copious rainfall. Situated in the equatorial doldrum area, it is extremely rare to have a full day with completely clear sky even during the periods of severe drought. On the other hand, it is also rare to have a stretch of a few days with completely no sunshine except during the northeast monsoon seasons. Thus rain water harvesting system is one of the suitable freatures that is proposed in Arts and Performance Centre .

The reason the system is being proposed is to reduse water consumption in the building. Butterfly roof carefully channels the water towards the gutter, which is then transferred into the rain water harvesting tank through filteration system. The collected rainw water is channeled for landscape irrigation as well as toilet flushing, laundry, etc.
