We are currently in the Anthropocene epoch; a disruptive epoch formed as

a result of human-caused behaviours including industrial agriculture over decades, if not centuries, which have severely impacted the environment through catastrophes such as Climate Change, Loss of Biodiversity and Destruction of Water Systems. Moreover, the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 has been seen as a new apocalyptic rider that rose from the smoke, ashes and floods.

This urban architectural proposal tests whether Regenerative Agriculture and Productive Landscapes have a potential to shape resilient communities and places that we inhabit in future, and in the long run help tackle the climate crisis that we are currently facing. The proposal is a transit-oriented mixed-use development integrated with urban greenery, located at the fringe of Subiaco aiming to connect to the train station as well as the neighbouring town of West Leederville. The ground level is designed as a Civic Plaza to achieve urban porosity. About a third of the development will accommodate a residential complex with modular housing units, as the rest of the area is dedicated to ‘Productive Landscapes,’ i.e. rooftop urban farms + kitchen gardens, organic market, roof gardens, constructed wetlands + raingardens, all of which will aim to serve the building and its inhabitants to be self-sufficient. ​The residential complex is envisioned to be highly communal with emphasis on co-living and micro-architecture.

CONVERGENT COMMUNITIES | UPCYCLED URBANISM Siteless/Universal, Anywhere in the World

Community is best defined as a place where there is a sense of belonging and connection.

However, as more towns and cities are being urbanised and embracing multiculturalism, this sense of belonging becomes a luxury for a majority of inhabitants in addition to other living factors such as privacy and comfort, as well as use of high-end materials in housing and lifestyle.

Convergent Communities | Upcycled Urbanism is a speculative social and urban design protoype comprising a creative hub (Confluence) and housing complexes (Capsules of Convergence), both of which aim to create resilient communities by tackling urban loneliness.

Confluence is a creative district converging arts and different cultures, designed with the aim of creating a sense of place and belonging in community through art + design, and maximising reuse and upcycling of reclaimed/unwanted materials in not only architectural and landscape design but also as an unusual medium for artists/creatives to explore and use in their projects and exhibitions. This creative hub embraces porosity in design and aims to blur the line between the building, the housing complexes and the landscape, offering outdoor spaces or ‘plazas’ not only as social nodes but also for accommodating ephemeral events and functions such as urban farming and public art.

Capsules of Convergence is a housing prototype designed to tackle unaffordable housing within limited site footprint, ideally targeting students including researchers and artists-in-residence. Each living ‘capsule’ is 10 m x 10 m and has a unique location as well as its own courtyard, which can be multipurpose. Residents here are encouraged to be self-sufficient and develop entrepreneurial skills by having the opportunity to launch their own start-ups, such as cafe or coworking spaces, at the ground level which primarily serves as a communal space.

The thrift store houses unwanted materials often contributed by the community, offering an opportunity for others to buy those materials at a lesser cost before they are sent to the Material Lab for reuse and fabrication.

The render here illustrates how technology and education can help in community building. The users here are playing digital scavenger hunt and are scanning QR codes placed randomly.

Communal kitchen promotes community building by encouraging the community to share and exchange their knowledge of cuisines, which is one of the key identities of a culture. Also encourages them to help the disadvantaged people during uncertain times by offering them free food.

TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE LUXURY: MUSCAT HIGHLINE Qurum Heights Road, Muscat, Oman.

The

discovery and exploitation of oil and gas five decades ago has been the driving force of rapid urbanisation and development of Muscat, as well as its transformation to a car-centric culture. Here highways act as a physical barrier that restricts pedestrian access and movement between two areas, forcing residents to rely more on private automobile dependency as there is limited variety of public transport. Moreover, limited availability of public spaces in Muscat, most of which are present in old parts of the city and lack in more recent developments, makes walkability and livable spaces a luxury rather than a necessity. This project proposes Muscat Highline, a (social) infrastructure comprising footbridges along Sultan Qaboos Highway stretching from Children’s Museum and Qurum Park to the Cave, with the aim of enhancing quality of life. It offers not only ease of accessibility between areas segregated by the highway but also collective public spaces for people for socialising, recreation, communal activities and hosting cultural and community events, hence contributing to the environmental and social sustainability. In addition to this infrastructure is the Museum of Omani Renaissance which celebrates Oman’s multiculturalism, the legacy of the late Sultan as well as the remarkable transformation of Oman within the last half century from a conflict-struck barren deserts and mountains to a modern, neutral and more economically-developed state under his leadership.

Inside the Museum of Omani Renaissance where the past and future, natural and constructed, and heritage and modernity coalesce. Redefining the notions of the “constructed landscape” and “geological architecture,” the museum is proposed as a subterranean architecture built under the Hajar Mountains along the highway, salvaging the geological luxuriance of the mountains as a sustainable alternative to imported building materials and defying the convention of building only on the scarce flat lands of the Omani capital.

Are parks more than just a green space anymore? Can they also

function as a way to serve (and meet the consumption needs) of the evergrowing and multicultural population. as well as promote organic living? How else can they enhance the livability of space hence quality of life - as well as social (and mental) wellbeing in a city where technology is advancing with increasing urban stress levels?

The main aim of this project is to reclaim and activate the public space by connecting most of the, if not all, parks and pocket squares as a single harmonious unit (‘megagarden’) within the city centre with walkable ‘strips’, similar to arteries connected to the lungs. Rising these strips as elevated gardens would be a good solution for the overcrowded spaces in the city centre, as they would not only offer new experience of viewing the city but also be a safer and more convenient alternative to crossing streets, not to mention the fact that the population of Melbourne would rise drastically by 2050.

Urban Farming

Playful creation of this part of the urban space using bright colours and sculptural furniture and playgrounds makes the place interactive, lively, child-friendly and ‘Instagrammable’, as this would help unify people together

It is ideally essential to transform the garden strips as an element of the (multi) cultural institution of Melbourne by proposing amphitheatres at some of the ends which connect to some of the parks.

Here are urban resting pods designed for reading, relaxing or resting, being ideal for university students, workers and anyone facing stress. Urban farming spaces are designed where organic food would grow on recycled and filtered gray water using hydroponics. These would not only help meet the possible rising demand and consumption needs but also in mitigating climate change as per Melbourne plan 2050 and more creation of related jobs.

THE RIPARIAN Al Wathba Flamingo Wetlands, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

This project is a competition launched by Beebreeders in collaboration with

the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency located in Al Wathba wetlands where the brief requires design of an iconic observation tower within the total floor area of 400 metres squared and with minimal or no excavation, as the site is sensitive.

Also, the brief asks for designing boardwalk on an existing trail which must be modular and adaptable to different topographies and sizes. In addition to the brief requirements above, Design Studio 4 has added its own design brief, which is to design a visitor centre within 600 metres squared and must serve functions other than as exhibition and/or retail spaces. This project is named The Riparian as the site is home to a number of wetlands and diverse flora and fauna, and proposes a design which respects the site, is well integrated into the nature and allows users to appreciate the biodiversity

VISITOR CENTRE This part of the project aims at designing a space rather than the usual exhibition and/or retail spaces in museums and visitors centre. As a strategy to maximise parking spaces without affecting the area of the visitor centre, and to design a building with minimal footprint, I decided to propose subterranean architectural design as this would allow not only use of passive strategies to reduce operational costs in long term, but also more open space, landscapes and plaza to be designed above, thus blurring the line between the building and nature.

A not-so-big amphitheatre which would offer maximum views of the surroundings and where for example talks could be held regarding the findings and practices in the R&D space.

Conceptual perspective sketch of how the visitor centre would look like. There is a blur in the line between ground level and underground, interior and exterior. The trees added in the courtyards would allow cool air to be drawn into the inner spaces.

An activity space for the public where workshops are held to promote life and environmental sciences. Examples could include designing a garment inspired by biomimicry, or growing hybrid plants in collaboration with botanists and scientists!

A research and development space dedicated to exploring, analysing and investigating different fields related to the wetlands such as geology, genetics+evolution, ecology, horticulture, and possibly GIS to understand further about the site.

Villa Alameda is a unique, sculptural and organic residential unit which

is designed in a way to promote healthy and peaceful lifestyle by incorporating a terraced kitchen garden at the top most level, and book- case + reading hub at the ground level, as the core space of the vil- la. The plot level is partially sunken to the beach level, therefore allowing direct access to the beach from the lower ground level where the pri- vate spaces (ie: rooms) are located at. Located in the waters of the Arabi- an Gulf behind the iconic Etihad Museum and the UAE flag, Pearl Jumei- ra is a unique residential complex that sits on a man-made island, creating breathtaking views over the Arabian Gulf as well as the splendid and spec- tacular skyline of Dubai. The 8.3-million-square-feet island was designed and developed by Meraas and hosts a complex of residences, schools, recreational and retail facilities, and a marvelous waterfront promenade.
