/ / prologue: the anthropocene / /

As historian John McNeill put it, ‘humankind has begun to play dice with the planet, with-

out knowing all the rules of the game’. That is, our behaviour has now tipped us into the Anthropocene epoch: a new, dangerous, human-caused, disruptive geological epoch. Damningly, industrial agriculture has proven the major player in destabilizing the six key Earth systems of Climate change, biodiversity loss, land systems change, destruction of our water systems, and disruption of the interrelated nitrogen and phosphorous cycles.

“The extraordinary bushfire season in Australia, from October 2019 to February 2020, followed years of drought, record temperatures and abnormal, dust-laden winds. Sobering harbingers of our planetary ills undoubtedly, underscored with the signature of over two centuries of 'progressive' but unacknowledged desertification and general degradation of our landscapes: all underpinned by indigenous dispossession.

In the wash-out of the summer, floods accompanied the breaking drought. Anthropocene proponents said ‘I told you so!’; sceptics continued to prevaricate. But there was an underlying feeling of discombobulation: a gnawing sense that something fundamental had shifted in our world and in our lives.

Then, from out of the smoke, ash and floods, emerged a new apocalyptic rider: COVID-19. This, on top of the traumatic antipodean summer, seemed to confirm what Clive Hamilton encapsulated as a 'Defiant' Mother Earth fighting back. But will we join her in this fight, or remain her enemy?”

Massing Iteration V1 [Incomplete] looks at modular and plug-nplay housing design strategies to allow adaptability, with different types and sizes to suit various target users ranging from a young working individual to an elderly family.

/ / massing studies: iteration v2 / / Based on the initial formfinding process in V1, V2 has a similar starting point but the approach to the formfinding is different where the latter is more organic, aims to merge with the context and has a larger atrium. Principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design [WSUD] are considered in the creation of the mixed-use development, particularly at the ground level which aims to serve as an open civic plaza.

I choose to proceed with this iteration for further development as I believe it is less bulky in form and this would open up more possibilities for the integration of the 9 design touchpoints. The process is explained in the following pages.

The aim here is to use non-conventional columns which would address both touchpoints 1 [iconic form] and 8 [technological innovations]. The residential part of the building facing the park has voids to accommodate plug-n-play modular housing system which will be later shown and discussed in the following pages..

Initial design of the building facade intended to be organic in form, can be 3D printed in parts for assembly and has a potential for accommodating green walls.

Bioreactive and solar algae panels in variant shades of green, arrayed randomly to create an interesting complex pattern. Most feasible option for the mixed-use facility.

Random cross-line pattern which would create interesting effects with play of light and shadow. Ideally fabricated using steel, and in parts for easier assembly.
