FERMENTED FUTUREA FOOD HUB

B.Arch Thesis | Spring 2023

Advisors: Katharina Kral, Florian Idenburg

This thesis aims to propose a food hub that tackles our growing problem of food waste. Achieving this vision through architecture requires an invention of a new food infrastructure, whereby adopting a life-cycle perspective approach. This fermentation facility will leverage the potential of waste regeneration and upcycling at every stage of the food supply chain, balancing industrial and educational aspects strategically. By reimagining the process of fermentation as the catalyst of our future food system, this food hub will elevate the the way we value food, reducing food waste and transformed new products back into the food ecosystem.

USE CENTER

Core Design Studio | Spring 2021

Collaboration with Roy Zhang

New Orleans is a captivating city renowned for its vibrant blend of art, music, and architecture. However, it also faces unique challenges due to its vulnerability to flooding and storms. As a result, the local response to these natural hazards becomes a significant aspect to consider in our project, where we prioritize a deep connection with nature. Our objective is to attract diverse users by offering interactive and inclusive programming that provides both physical and visual experiences immersed in the natural surroundings.

Our site will be an extension of the Lafitte Greenway where a major circulation route is provided for visitors to meander through. This allows them to both experience the site as a green park through complex landscaping and to guide them through the communal exhibition space and further dispersions into more specific programs in our complex. Mardi Gras, as being a vernacular principal event, also informs the placement of of the programs, which the space will offer both elevated views and potential moment inviting people to join the parade.

COOPER HEWITT, SMITHSONIAN DESIGN

MUSEUM

Vertical Design Studio | Fall 2022 Instructors: Florian Idenburg, Karilyn Johanesen Collaboration with Zoe Li

This institutional collaboration with Cooper Hewitt aims to address the challenges within the museum by acknowledging clashes of historical narratives between the Cooper Hewitt exhibitions and the Carnegie Mansion. The proposed intervention establishes a newly defined space that seamlessly connects the Carnegie Mansion, the townhouses, and the courtyard. This introduces a new system, contradicting with the existing, to experiencing and navigating knowledge.

The design strategy is the concept of mirroring the underground space of the mansion, creating subterranean areas that house new programs, focused on immersive educational experiences. The diagonal walkways, comprising ramps and stairs, form axes that enable visitors to traverse through exhibitions, each with varying slopes to accommodate innovative artworks. Opening up the mansion through these walkways provides visual and physical interaction across levels, bridging the new walkways with existing mansion levels.
