THE ALEXANDRIA CLUB The three friends, resting comfortably on the table, were engaged in a lively conversation as to which of them was considered the most important to the wise woman who would soon appear in the study room.

“Hey, Ingo, I've always wondered where your name comes from. It’s so strange...” the reed pen asked, a tool, similar to the modern pencil, which was used in ancient times.

“Well, just so you know, you little piece of reed,” answered the aforementioned ironically, “I happen to be the daughter of Ingenio Grande (Great Ingenuity) and Creatividad de Obras (Creativity of Works), that's why they call me Ingenia Grandes Obras (Ingenuity Great Works), and in short: Ingo.

I am that halo that inspires great thinkers, scientists and wise men. I am by their side even if they, in this case the wise woman, don't see me. So, imagine how important I am. I can fly through space and time!”

“Oh, look at her,” the papyrus scroll interjected. “Well, I can also travel through space and time. If I am treated and preserved properly, the messages and very interesting scientific texts that our friend writes on me can be passed on to future generations and will reach the ends of the earth.”

“Yes, yes, OK, you skinny little rectangle,” joked the pen, turning to the paper, “but if I don't caress you, spreading black ink over you, forming words and sentences, you'd remain blank for ever and ever.”

“Stop arguing once and for all, for she is about to arrive, and we must be ready for her! Here, the only one that is really indispensable to the woman we serve is me, that mix of intuition, inspiration and critical thinking. You should know that the last time I went to visit Venus, first passing by the Moon (because remember that, as an ethereal and abstract being, I can move beyond our firmament), the planet told me, secretly in my ear, that she saw our wise lady observing it with great attention using that instrument that humans call an astrolabe, and that she helped them to improve it.

“What are you saying?” Exclaimed the papyrus scroll “And what did Venus tell you she did next?”

“She was like that for quite a while, looking at him with her big, expressive amber eyes,” Ingo replied, “she had a wide, satisfied smile on her face and went over to this table to write something down on your surface.”

“It's true, it's true,” said the reed pen enthusiastically, “Don't you remember, paper my friend?” “I do. She took me between her fingers, introduced me into the inkwell and traced a multitude of numbers that made up arithmetic operations and also sections of curved lines, forming several circles and ellipses on your sepia skin. What she did was extraordinarily precise and beautiful at the same time?”

“I'll never be able to see it...” the paper mumbled sadly. “I am like a face without a polished metal surface to look at.”

“But you can always hear it,” said Ingenia Grandes Obras, with tenderness in her words, “because there will always be someone to whom our dear teacher will read aloud what she has printed upon you. I, however, will never know what it feels like to be touched, caressed, by her hands, for I will always be invisible to her, like the breath of wind that moves her hair... So, in spite of my wisdom, I envy you in a way...”

At these last words the three friends were left silent in thought. A silence that extended throughout the length and breadth of that spacious room full of cabinets lining its walls and in which scrolls and books were arranged on each and every one of its shelves. Four large windows intentionally placed from east to west of the great room, which kept the space illuminated when the sun appeared and disappeared, let in the faint orange light of that last hour in the beautiful Alexandrian evenings at those moments, before the beginning of spring.

The reed pen, in turn, broke the silence: “Listen to me: let's stop whining. At the end of the day, each one of us is indispensable to her within our limitations. Ingenia, you are invisible but you represent that strong and unshakable faith that infuses the great philosopher, mathematician and astronomer that is our friend, the necessary inspiration to feel secure and determined in her path, in the defence of her ideas. Wasn't it her who said: “Stand up for your right to think, because even thinking wrongly is better than not thinking at all?”

Well, that's just it.” “And you, paper my friend,” continued the pointed wedge-shaped pencil, “what would become of me if you did not exist? Where would she put her ideas, her calculations, her discoveries? On the walls, on the floor, or perhaps on hardened clay tablets as the ancient Sumerians did when writing began? Uff, that's silly. I, humbly, am the instrument, the thread that transforms the idea into a physical, tangible reality, into a message. So, I invite you to stop complaining and let us all feel equally important.”

Then, the three partners in crime made a sublime effort. The red pen began to move from the corner of the table where it lay, to the centre of the table where the paper was, as the paper subtly lifted one of its corners in an attempt to embrace his friend. Ingenia, for her part, moved over them swiftly, back and forth, causing a gentle breeze that lulled them both to sleep.

At that precise moment, the two large wooden doors of the study suddenly opened and the woman, of whom they had been speaking a few moments before, entered with determination even with the impediments of age, making the folds of her robe fly with the rapid advance of her footsteps. At the same time, the reed pen rolled back to its original position, the paper fell hastily on the table, and Ingo stopped moving to come solicitously and loyally to the side of her admired friend. For the attentive mind of the scientist, those subtle movements did not go unnoticed, she remained still for a few moments in front of the table, with her eyes on it, and after a few seconds, she gave them a subtle smile, whispering to them: 2

“Dear friends, I thank you for always being there, ready to serve me. I want you to know that difficult times are coming and I do not know how many more seasons we will be together for, in this beloved room where we have spent so many hours, among these parchments, scrolls and books that contain so much wisdom and concerns of those who have embodied their knowledge in them. Among them, I...” The lady then turned her gaze to the west-facing window. She walked towards it with hesitant steps. Ingenia followed her. And they both looked out. The woman rested her hands on the windowsill and raised her face to heaven. The full March moon was slowly beginning to illuminate the rooftops of the part of the city that stretched out in front of the building with its blanket of silver light. The night was cloudless, and the stars and planets that had so often been observed by the scholar showed themselves in all their fullness, with total clarity.

She closed her eyes and sighed. She thought that she wished that the men who in their respective spheres governed the city could only come to an agreement, and the serious disturbances and clashes that had occurred in recent days, due to their struggles for religious and civil power, could be brought to a peaceful end through reason, kindness and empathy...

Alexandria, the famous, beautiful city that owed its name to one of the greatest conquerors of history, the city where she, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, instructor, was born, did not deserve that.

She opened her eyes, and in spite of the glow from the flames of the destructive fire rising in the distance over the squares of some quarters, coupled with the distant shouts of the maddened mobs, she forced herself to harbour some hope.

More calmly, the woman closed the shutters and turned, approaching the table again. She lit the candlewick with the flame of the candle from the small candlestick that she liked to always keep burning and sat down with a tired but upright gesture in her beloved chair. She picked up her beloved reed pen, ready to write her last discovery on that precious piece of virgin paper before going home to rest. But suddenly she stopped; she thought she heard something, a murmur, a continuous whispering like the sound of the calm waves of the sea on the seashore... Intrigued, she pricked up her ear and paid attention... And she had no doubts about it. They were three familiar voices, close, whispering in unison: “Hipatia... Thank you, Hipatia...! Hypatia of Alexandria…”

And Hypatia responded with a smile.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND THE SOLAR-POWERED CAR

Eduardo sits in his office after a hard day's work. He takes a deep breath and a smile spreads across his face. After much effort and dedication, he has just been awarded a European project to carry out a research project for which he is the main person responsible for it.

The sunset offers the last rays of sunlight that stream through his office window.

With a smile still plastered on his face, Eduardo gazes at the right wall of the room, completely covered with diplomas, certificates and awards. A whole life dedicated to science, a whole life that now converges in a new project, a new adventure. He is a renowned scientist with a heart-stopping curriculum, but of all those merits, those achievements, his sight stops at a small picture frame, the oldest one, a science prize from his school. Edward picks it up, and as he looks at it closely, his smile becomes even wider.

That award was a life lesson.

It was 1999 and Eduardo was in science class. He was a dedicated child, he had a goal, he was going to be the greatest scientist in the world and no one was going to stop him. So, the news that his teacher Isabel brought them was the challenge they had been waiting for.

“Children, this year we are going to have a science competition. Sciences of the Sea and the Sun. I will set you a few projects and you will have the whole academic year to carry them out. At the end of the year, an exhibition will be held and a winner will be chosen.”

The projects, as expected, were classified at different levels. Most of his classmates chose to participate in a simple project related to plant growth from Mediterranean legumes and vegetables. The middle project had to do with the benefits of sea salt, very typical, but even so, some of his classmates also chose it. The most difficult project, and the one he was going to choose no matter what, was to make a remotecontrolled car powered solely by solar energy. Only one other classmate asked for it, Marta, who was neither the most studious nor the hardest worker in the class.

“It sounds like an interesting project! I wouldn't even know where to start, but I can't wait to try,” said Marta when she found out that they were the only two students who had chosen that project. “We could meet up to share ideas.”

Eduardo answered her evasively. Didn't she realise that they were competitors?

That same afternoon Eduardo went into his room, sat down at his desk and after reciting the steps of the scientific method as if they were a mantra, began to sketch an outline of the different steps, structures and problems he would have to face to build himself a car that would win the competition. And so, day after day, he made progress.

Observation, research, assumptions, experimentation, analysis of results and conclusion. The outline he was building was slowly getting bigger and bigger. It was a huge project that was taking up more and more of his time. He was learning about electronics, programming, 3D design and a long etcetera. His parents interrupted him from time to time to ask him to come down for lunch or dinner, or to offer their help when they saw that he was so committed.

“No, I have to do it on my own, to prove to myself that I can do it.”

He decided to start spending his afternoons at the library, where he had internet access and this ensured few interruptions. One afternoon, he arrived at the library and got ready to start his study routine, today it was time to learn about electronic circuitry.

“Observation, research, assumptions, experimentation, analysis of results and conclusion.” Despite saying it quietly, this time his peculiar mantra got a response.

“What you said is very strange.” It was Marta. She was in the library and from the drawings on the desk, she was also working on the project. They were great drawings of a sports car, spectacular, with spoilers that simulated fire. It seemed like everything she had done so far was based on body design. Poor thing, how difficult it was going to be for her to solve the problems he had already been solving. He was beginning to doubt whether the unfortunate girl would be able to finish the car in time, so he thought he'd show her a bit of what his routine was based on.

“These are the steps of the scientific method: observation, research, assumptions, experimentation, analysis of results and conclusion. I recommend you follow them to progress in the project.”

“And what do each of them mean?”

Edward was especially stressed by the project, but she, despite being much further behind him, didn't seem worried at all. Although he didn't feel like wasting his time that

way, the truth was that he felt more like talking about the scientific method than studying electrical circuits.

“Well, you see, these are steps that are usually followed to analyse a problem or to carry out research. For example, we have to make a car that runs on solar energy. The first problem we might have is how to transform solar energy into electricity. That would be the observation of the problem. Then comes the research, my favourite part, which is when you look for information to understand the problem in depth; that allows you to develop a theory of how you could solve it based on concepts that other scientists have developed before you, that's the assumption. Then you just have to test if the problem has been solved with an experiment and analyse the result. Whether everything goes well or goes terribly wrong, you will be able to draw conclusions that will help you progress with your projects.”

“Wow! That sounds super exciting the way you tell it. I hadn't thought about how many problems we'd have to solve to make the car move. Have you made much progress with using sunlight?”

“It's a complex subject, but now I'm learning about electrical circuits, but I have a lot of information to learn about solar panels; I think it will be the hardest part.”

“And the design? This is the part I'm most advanced in. Look at mine. Do you like it?”

Eduardo nodded and continued working; he had wasted a lot of time with Marta that afternoon.

The months went by and the date of the competition was approaching. He had drawn a lot of diagrams, he had bought and organised all the pieces he thought needed.

He decided that he had to get to work on the assembly. Months of learning circuitry helped him a lot and soon he had a well assembled structure, he just needed to change the power supply to a solar powered one. The articles he had found to study the construction of photovoltaic cells were complex; he was going to have a hard time building one powerful enough to power the car.

One day, while he was in the library, he received an email from Marta. Attached was a very complete article on the manufacture of different types and sizes of solar panels.

It helped him a lot, but after much effort, he was only able to make a flimsy and inefficient solar panel.

The day of the competition arrived. He was tremendously proud of his prototype.

Surprisingly, Marta also brought a complete car with the design Eduardo remembered from his drawings. Marta's solar panels were much more elaborate than his.

In the final test to decide the winner, Marta's car outperformed Eduardo's car in terms of speed and range, so he only received a second prize.

That was the prize Eduardo was holding in his hands. At that moment, Marta entered his office.

“You know I have one just like it, but it's a first prize, don't you?” she teased him whenever she could.

“Remember what you said to me when I went to ask you about the car and the solar panels in a rage?”

Martha hesitated for a second. They had known each other for so long that she could see he was asking her the question seriously.

“You were surprised that while you had set out to understand every detail, develop every component and manufacture every part, I had stuck with your idea of the scientific method. In researching, I had contacted each of the authors of the articles. When I told them, I was building a car for a science fair at my high school, each and every one of them offered their help and cooperation. I remember that I was even invited to come to this same university to build my solar panels.”

“That day I learned that to do good science it is better to work in a team. Today, after having achieved this project, I think it is the best lesson I received in my life.”

You know what they say: “Walk alone and you will go faster, walk together and you will go farther.” Come down, our team has brought a whole feast to celebrate.

SOFIA’S STAR

Sofia had been waiting for months for that night in August when she would go with her family to see the Perseids over the sky of Athens. At school they had explained to her the origin of that meteor shower and had told her that there were people who believed that each shooting star - she already knew they were meteors, not stars -was an opportunity to make a wish. Sofia didn't believe in such things, but she had decided to give it a try and see what happened. All in all, there was no harm in trying.

It was a clear, cloudless night and, besides, there had been a power failure in the city that had turned off the streetlights and lit up the stars. Sofia was lying on a blanket that she shared with her brother Basil. The two played, amazed, counting the number of shooting stars they could see. There came a point when they were so many at the same time that it was impossible to keep track. Then Sofia remembered her resolution to make a wish. In part, she wanted to disprove such superstitions with her own experience. Thus, she could confirm first-hand that the meteor shower does not need to have magical powers to be amazing. However, a small part of her wanted it to work. With all the shooting stars that were falling-she preferred to call them “little bits of a comet”-maybe one of them might work, if only “due to pure statistics,” which was something she had also begun to learn in class.

Then, she concentrated on her wish. She had long imagined what it would be like to live in the time when the great scientists who populated the lands she walked through every day to school and who walked on the ground where she now lay to look at the same sky they looked at. And that was her wish: to be able to travel back many centuries to see first-hand the creation of the knowledge that fascinated her so much.

Sofia closed her eyes with all her might thinking about it while her brother kept trying to count flashes out loud: two hundred and thirty-two, two hundred and thirty-three, two hundred and thirtyfour ..... Then she opened her eyes and saw a star coming straight at her, much brighter than the rest and in a different colour. Only she seemed to notice. Her parents looked up at the sky, calm and relaxed, and her brother, at her side, continued with his incessant task of counting little pieces of a comet. Sophia was not frightened, but she did feel an enormous curiosity for that shooting that kept coming closer to her. And suddenly it happened. The starlight surrounded her, and what was darkness a moment ago was now light. She was still lying down, but now she was on a rickety old bed and it was morning: time for school.

She woke up and immediately realised that she was not at home. Everything was the same, but, at the same time, everything was different. She got up and walked out the door of the place she was in. The streets had no asphalt and the passers-by wore strange clothes, as if they were taking part in one of those ancient Greek performances they put on for tourists. Sofia was not afraid. Besides, no one noticed her, dressed in her jeans and purple flowered T-shirt. No one was aware of her presence, so she could observe every detail she came across. Besides, she didn't know where she had to go, or which way to go, but she didn't dither or hesitate when it came to following a path, as if something inside her was telling her what to do.

And so, without knowing how, she came to a house that caught her attention. There was nothing special about it: it was a single-storey house, like all the houses in that place and like those in her grandmother Sofia's village. The door was ajar, like most of the doors she had come across.

But something told her that she had to go into that very house. She slowly opened the door and inside saw a bearded man who seemed to be sleeping peacefully lying on a bed. He reminded her a lot of her grandfather Vassilios when he was younger.

Sofia entered the house and began to see maps and spheres made of clay. She hesitated for a moment as to whether the gentleman was a sailor or a footballer, but soon discarded the second option: those balls would cause painful injuries when kicked... After approaching the bed and checking that the gentleman was still sound asleep, she continued looking at those documents scattered all over the room, in which she discovered that there were not only maps. There were also calculations and drawings of spheres, and arrows and geometric shapes. Sofia began to examine them one by one and immediately managed to understand everything: that man had spent the night -that night and, probably, several previous ones- trying to calculate how much the circumference of the Earth measured.

But Sofia soon realised that there were many things crossed out and documents also scattered on the floor, probably the result of the man's frustration. She thought she had an advantage because she knew what the circumference of the Earth measured. They had told her about it a couple of days ago in Geography and she had been reading about how important it had been to learn this fact, especially for navigators, whose voyages had contributed to the progress of societies throughout history. After a few minutes, she easily spotted the error in those calculations. A mistake which seemed very foolish to her, and which she thought had probably been due to his stubborn blindness, as happened to her with her homework when she was very tired. She picked up what looked most like a pen and corrected the calculations without giving the matter too much thought. After all, the important thing was the method that the scientist had used-she was now sure about his profession-to come up with these calculations.

She was fiddling with the spheres on the table and the shelves, when the sleeping gentleman made a distinct sound, as if he were about to wake up. Sofia nimbly ducked under the table and watched as the man got out of bed and went, with a worried look on his face, to continue reviewing his writings. As he reached the table and skimmed through the first calculations, he noticed the crossing out that corrected the error. He continued to inspect the documents and, with his pulse racing, checked that everything fitted, that the calculations were correct. That the riddle was at last solved.

Eratosthenes never knew why, but at that moment he felt the impulse to look under his table. And there he saw a little girl curled up, who seemed to be falling asleep and who, smiling, winked at him before falling into the arms of Morpheus.

Sofia awoke rocked by a rhythmic, careful movement. She opened her eyes slightly and saw that she was in her mother's arms, almost reaching her bed. She asked her how they had found her and her mother didn't understand the question. She had simply been picked up, asleep, from the blanket on which she had been gazing at the meteor shower. That night Sofia knew that sometimes dreams come true.

THE WANDERING FOUNTAIN

“I have been in this maze of rocks for so long that I can’t say if all this effort will be worthwhile”, he dropped his equipment and fell down exhausted. “But, I can’t go back now, or I’ll be the laughing stock of the village.” Sheltered from the intense sun he took out the drawing material from his backpack and began to draw the landscape as true to life as possible. For this, he had the notes from the last few days: calculations of slopes, their orientation, types of rock and vegetation, who knows if all that information could be useful. As soon as he finished, he reviewed the results. Here was the first cartographic map of the Sierra, a set of overlapping hills that ended abruptly on the coastline: “Here’s the evidence I need,” he thought. “This time the Council will have to take my ideas seriously”.

The young man continued his way towards the highest peak. After days his expedition would end there. He wished to see the sea again. Last time was weeks ago, when he left his house to explore the mountains. He knew he had been very daring, he knew nothing about mountains. He was just a fisherman! His only inheritance were hands that were skilled at tying ropes and weaving nets. Even so, he had a great instinct to understand the weather, to find his way by looking at the stars, and he had learned to handle navigational instruments with great skill.

The summer was proving to be extremely dry, the buckets rarely drew water from the wells, and when they did so, it was of bad quality. The trips to the pools in the nearest town were long and disputes among inhabitants were growing. The municipal council, concerned about that situation, finally agreed to listen to his project: - “A channel should be built throughout the mountains, to find the steepest line and allow the water to flow naturally to the village."

He believed that in this way the village would benefit from the distant rains and not only those that fell on the wells of the houses and fields. Many stormy days, while returning to the port, he had seen huge torrents of water flowing down the mountain; he was convinced that most of them ended on the southern side of the town. Of course, his plan was not perfect and that stupid Pedro tumbled his statement:

- “In these lands, water appears and disappears without any sense. You can put channels in the entire mountain and the water will avoid the channel, it seems to make fun of us.

Go to the mountain to look for those rivers that you see from your boat. Your fate will be the same than that old king, who lost his head while searching for the wandering fountain.”

Alvaro took the taunt as an opportunity, he was upset with the mockery, but most of all he wanted to prove that his proposal was feasible.

Those lonely days had been more bearable because at night Alvaro shared a refuge with a young shepherd, Oscar. They both told stories of the sea and the mountains, so they became good friends. Although Oscar admired his companion’s commitment to that expedition, he had doubts about the usefulness of the map.

- “This mountain has surprising and fanciful shapes” said Oscar. “You can easily find caves and rocks as if someone sculpted them to their liking and given them a soul of their own.” In a more serious tone he added: “It is said that the mountain engulfed the king and his entourage when they were looking for the sources of the wandering fountain, he was bewitched when he drank its water, the freshest and clearest that he had ever tasted. Don’t you think the same thing could happen to you?”

- “These are tricks to keep children away from the mountains. The most important thing is to know the area and to choose the best route to collect the greatest amount of water with the least effort. There is always an explanation for everything, even for these rocks with a soul.”

- “What if it doesn’t rain far away from the town either? What good will the channel do?"

Suddenly a loud and distant clap of thunder startled both friends. Alvaro thought that this deluge was another support to his argument. There was an urgent need to take cover.

What happened next would seem like a dream, if that dream were not as real as the long fall from a height. The ground where they were resting collapsed, both of them fell several metres into a torrent of water. They were swept away by the water with such force that they could barely breathe. The sudden underground slide ended in a large shallow lake, even though they could both swim. They could see a little bit thanks to small cracks at

the top of the vault that covered them. When their eyes adjusted to the dim light, they gathered up the remains of their belongings and lay down on the nearest bank. They were totally disoriented and scared.

- “I told you that this mountain is cursed, do you believe me now in that it swallows people?"

- “Well, we are still alive; and we will get out the same way we got in.” He looked around, the walls were slippery, up high, the ceiling was covered with stalactites. It was no use standing there waiting for someone to hear his screams. “Look! the water is flowing through that cave, let's follow it.”

- “It's crazy, if we follow the water, we’ll be further from the surface and we won’t find the way out.”

There were was no choice but to keep walking. Groping around in the dark and with help of improvised torches; they discovered ghostly caves, small streams, all kinds of pools and immense vaults that were awe-inspiring. It was a mystery how water had been able to carve the rock in such a way.

No one knows how many days or weeks they spent inside the mountain, or what path they had followed up to that moment. They just slept when they could, and ate a little bit of their scarce provisions. The sunlight entered from small cracks from time to time; the sign that the surface was not so far, but any effort to reach it was futile. Fortunately, together they encouraged each other to keep walking. The map drawn with so much effort and enthusiasm has been used as a torch on the last day, but Alvaro was no longer concerned about that, he had understood that those mountains were working in his favour, the mountains were the storehouse of the much-appreciated fresh water. Too bad that nobody out there knew about it.

Suddenly Oscar was awakened by a cool breeze with the smell of saltpetre. They ran in search of the air intake. The further they went, the louder the roar of a waterfall. They found another cave with a strong flow from which the sea breeze came.

- “I have a good feeling about this, Oscar.”

- “Do we have a choice?” he asked with a half-smile.

- “I'm afraid not as fast as this one.”

Both jumped into the stream without knowing their fate. The mountain returned them to the sea. They reached the shore exhausted. With huge emotion and fatigue, among laughs, cries and shouts of victory they felt the fresh air of freedom again. They had overcome the curse of the mountain.

They walked ragged but happy, a few kilometres from home and they still could not believe their adventure had come to an end: - “You have seen those underground rivers like me, haven’t you?”

- “Sure, I’ve seen them! We have been dragged for hours, we have sailed lakes and even dived in a mountain! I don't understand how we are still alive.”

- “But what a happy find, Oscar! Forget about the channels through the mountain, the water will return to the town as we have returned to the surface.”

- “Poor you, you have completely lost your mind, how do you plan to get fresh water from the sea.”

- “We’ll show those rivers another way out, we’ll stop waiting for the storms over our heads and we’ll look for them at our feet.”

- “ Do you think they'll think we're crazy in the village?”

- “Come on, the legend of the wandering fountain precedes us! By the way, I doubt that we are the first to come up with this idea, we will need tools, and books!”

That morning the French engineer Henry Darcy picked up the first copies of The Fountains of the Village of Dijon from the press, which would make Dijon the first European city with a modern water distribution system. That book also described Darcy's Law for the first time; Alvaro's answer to open the natural passage of water through a natural porous medium that would lead it to the new village fountain. It was 1856, the lights of the Enlightenment were shining closer.

MY CORAL Today is the day. I have everything ready: the poster, the photo album on the table, the computer, her favourite cake. I want to see her so badly that the hours seem to be passing too slowly.

I miss her hugs, her look, her presence, her company, her smell, her kisses. I even miss arguing with her. If I've been able to last half a year without seeing her, I think I can last a couple of hours more. I can't believe that finally, today, my mother is coming home.

I had never been separated from her for so long. She left with the idea of returning after two months - which already seemed like a long time - but unforeseen circumstances arose in the expedition; the flight had to be cancelled twice and a state of alarm began in Spain. Then came the border closure due to Covid and she had to stay in Australia for three more months.

My mother is a marine biologist and leads a coral reef research group in the Columbretes Islands nature reserve. For years, for most of my life, she has been scientifically monitoring more than 200 colonies in this protected area of the Mediterranean. She is so passionate about her work that she never calls me by my name; she prefers to call me Coral. There are still times when she gets angry with my father for having taken the idea out of her head and not having registered me like that, because for her they are the most beautiful, exceptional and charismatic living beings on Earth. Who would have thought a few months ago that I would miss her stories of the sea so much one before going to sleep.

We have had many video calls, but not as much as we would have liked, because there have been days when I was already asleep due to the time differences and she only talked to my father.

The poor man did everything he could to entertain me, especially when there was no school! During lockdown he didn't know what game, craft, challenge or cupcake to bake so that we would have a good time and I wouldn't be on the tablet or watching TV. I don't know why he has such an obsession with screens! Now, at the age of 12, I still don't have a mobile phone and he keeps telling me that when I get my first phone it will be the worst present I could ever get. I can't wait to check it out.

I really want to tell you that something has changed in me. I too am feeling a strong attraction to the sea. The first thing I wanted to do when they let us out of the confinement time slot was to walk along the seashore and, although the water was very cold, I didn't hesitate to jump in. I wanted to feel the waves on my skin. Since then, I have a sense of wanting to be close, of caring about what happens in the oceans. I have even been reading some books that my mother had recommended to me some time ago and her annual scientific report on coral reefs. I needed help and many hours to take it all in; I had no idea that they were listed as an endangered species due, above all, to global warming.

I didn't know so many things! I began to understand the uniqueness of corals that my mother used to tell me about: they are simple structures on the outside but complex on the inside. This animal 1

is seen to have a structure composed of millions of very small sea creatures called polyps, which look like mouths surrounded by tentacles. Inside their tissues there are microalgae that produce photosynthesis and serve as food. As they grow, so does the skeleton underneath them. I'm ashamed to have thought they were just brightly coloured rocks. I was amazed to learn that, under the right conditions, they can live for centuries, but that in the last 30 years we have lost 50% of the world's reefs. In her report I also found some graphs of how sea temperatures are rising and predictions of how they will change in the future. In 25 years, they will be in water that is so hot they can't stand it.

I couldn't believe it! When I showed them to my father, wishing I had misunderstood, he made it clear that if we don't slow down our emissions, they will continue to die year after year, becoming white as they lose the animal inside them. Reefs act as nurseries for organisms and small fish and are critical to the oceans. They are even more important than the trees in the forest! Without them, small marine species disappear, then large ones, and then many more ecosystems on which people depend.

Everything is connected on our planet. That's why the work of mum and her team is so important.

My father, who is my mother's biggest fan, or as I call him, her most loyal follower, always tells me that, before I was born, he was a photojournalist and followed her on all her scientific adventures. His favourite photos are those of the expedition for the conservation of loggerhead turtles in the Menorca channel. The experiences he remembers the worst, when the oil tanker Prestige sank and they volunteered to clean the chapapote (fuel) from the Galician coasts. He explained to me that he also learned a lot on those trips and that what many people do not know is that 90% of the heat created by the carbon dioxide we produce is absorbed by the ocean; if the ocean did not reduce so much heat, the temperature of the atmosphere would rise to about 50º. A two-degree rise in sea temperature causes the coral to die. It is as if our body went from 37ºC to 39ºC permanently, we could not resist it. If current trends continue, in less than 30 years, annual whitening will kill most of our reefs!

In the Columbretes Islands natural reserve they found some corals that have the ability to recover after episodes of massive mortality caused by rising temperatures. This survival mechanism, known as rejuvenation, has so far only been described in fossils. With the discovery, my mother contacted colleagues at the Australian Institute of Marine Science Monitoring Programme to collaborate on solutions for the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living species on Earth, which is visible even from outer space. It’s a shame it cannot be seen from my house so I can be with her.

It was difficult for me to understand many concepts, but one was clear to me: it is very difficult to transmit what is happening under the sea because we cannot see it. Humans have the idea that the oceans are so big, so vast, so resistant that it seems that it does not matter what we do with them. We are not aware that our actions will shape everything that will follow and I don't want to let more time pass, I've been asleep, I want to do something now. To get involved like my parents.

I started to make a banner with phrases of awareness and motivation, with phrases that I had learned from my mother's documentation on coral reefs and that I had ignored until then. I also made an album with the Mediterranean species in danger of extinction: the red coral, the Posidonia Oceanica meadows, the Gorgonia populations and the Pinna nobilis, among many others. I tried to think like a researcher. She tells me that the last step in scientific work must always be to share the results. So, together with my father, I created an account in all the social networks I know with the name "My Coral". Thanks to our friends and colleagues, many people are already following us and helping us to disseminate our project to raise awareness to the maximum number of people.

A MINOR PLOT For Joel, a little turtle with memory who cares about his Home, who travels and swims wisely.

Her silhouette was visible despite the rippled distortion of the lagoon. Hippo had seen one of those creatures before, so he remained still, showing caution. The girl was about six years old and was not carrying any suspicious objects, although she certainly posed an imminent threat.

He remembered what had happened to his beloved dancer, how he had found her caught in a cruel fishing net. Such a thought made him stagger and lose his balance in an instant: his dorsal fins did not prevent him from falling to a Caulerpa leaf on which he wound his tail like an anchor, mutating from yellow to brown in an attempt to go unnoticed. “It did my dancer no good,” he thought, and saw himself the day he met her, trunk to trunk in front of her, dancing and unravelling in spurts of water to show that his male womb was capable of harbouring life.

That took place on his first birthday, another year had passed since his beloved had been taken from him; now half of his existence lay ahead of him and he did not wish to lose it prematurely and stupidly.

He tried to pull himself together. He would look for some grubs; he had already eaten fifty times that day, even more but he still felt hungry. The cockles, wary, chattering their shells as they passed by. “They're going about their business,” he thought.

Suddenly, he caught sight of her with one of his eyes. He was sure that this time he would not escape. There was a huge whitish ball approaching him in a ghostly manner.

He turned around like a frightened child. However, no tentacle imprisoned him. That's

strange. I could have sworn it was a jellyfish. Covered in sediment, it rose close to the shore. Too close. Next to the dock, a human puppy took the opportunity: “Look, Mum! A seahorse!”

“Put it in the bucket and we'll show it to your sister. Afterwards, we will release it.”

A human prison would not have been worse. Finally, he was deposited on the shore of the "Mar Mayor". I had been fortunate enough not to end up as a key-ring.

Hippo, exhausted, took refuge near the “seco”, far from the Posidonia meadow.

Then his hope was kindled: with luck, he would meet a legend, the old hermit of the dunes. The sage would help him return home. His momentary hope was dashed when he caught a glimpse of a shell much larger than himself lurking in the background.

Stunned, he turned around and stood still, but, with his left eye, he spotted another loggerhead turtle swimming straight towards its equal. The circular confrontation ended with the latter biting the former Caretta, which fled frustrated away from that beach.

Next, Hippo, who was trying to pass unnoticed next to a seaweed, was discovered by the newcomer, who had introduced herself as “Joel”, a human name imposed on her at IMIDA (Marine Resources Centre of the Murcian Research Institute). The expert patient had been transferred to the centre before hatching and being bred in captivity in order to ensure her survival against common predators, which, paradoxically, included humans themselves.

“What's the paradox, loggerhead turtle?” Hippo asked tiredly. “Your sister species has been about to turn me into plankton and you have confronted her... Maybe for food?”

“No” answered Joel after thinking about it, “I don't like seahorses. I thought the prey was a

sea bream.

Hippo laughed and blew bubbles out of his trunk: “Sea-bream! You should know that they all have a belly full of plastic.

United by that link in the food chain, each on one side, they swam together for a long time without realising the direction they had to take. Hippo told Joel that he was far away from home, but that he would take the opportunity to get to know that unknown sea that humans called “ours.” After mentioning the plastic bag anecdote, Joel shared his deepest doubts with the seahorse. After all, the IMIDA humans had been her saviours on the mainland. In contrast, there was the fact that turtles eat jellyfish and many mistake human-made plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them. If Hippo had hair, it would have stood

“on end.” If there were no sea turtles in the sea eating the jellyfish, they would proliferate so fast that it would possibly be impossible for humans to swim!

Joel listened attentively. He was grateful for the seahorse’s interest, which already

had enough with the spills and the anoxia of its lagoon. If it did not die before, He would return to spawn in La Manga or Calblanque.

After saying goodbye, Hippo set out to return to the Mar Menor by any means necessary. Then, the sand thinned out, revealing the home of the travelling crab. He didn't hesitate for a second to head for his “motorhome,” a tiny silver lacquered cavity that went unnoticed so often, just what its owner wanted. Hippo couldn't let that opportunity pass him by, he didn't even feel hungry anymore. He tapped the shell gently but sharply with his trunk several times until a cutting claw was wielded furiously towards him.

“Be careful! What a character! It is inappropriate of a hermit like you.”

The crab poked its head out, perplexed and enraged: “Inappropriate? Forceful entry!” He added, pinching his beard, “What's a ridiculous pseudo-horse bothering me for? Can't you clearly see that I don't want company?”

Hippo “puckered his snout” and added sadly: “I’m lost. This is not my home.”

Then he told the hermit crab how he had been caught and carried in a bucket to the wrong place.

“Kidnapping!” he was shocked.

What was most surprising was that the crab itself had gone through a similar experience. Thus, the past of the ancient sage, marked by romance and captivity, was revealed to Hippo.

“Hildegart was a real pro,” he added wistfully.

The marine biologist had collected the hermit crab from the beach to study the behaviour of its ecosystem and the influence of dumping. After months in an aquarium with expenses paid, the German woman had returned him to the sea with a kiss. End of story.

Hippo then remembered Joel, “our interrelationship with the human species is undeniable and no one knows where he'll end up with his skeleton,” he had said. The seahorse would have liked to accompany the turtle across the vast sea, even though he knew it was too dangerous. Hippo told the wise man about the adventures of the tortoise and how they said goodbye.

After all that, Joel turned on itself and disappeared.

“And what did you expect? This is not looking for Nemo,” replied the venerable crustacean.

Hippo floated thoughtfully. The hermit crab continued: “Another topic that will soon be talked about is the mining of the seabed for minerals needed for touch phones and other human gizmos.”

Joel had met a fin whale impressed by the underwater exploitation in the Canary Islands. Hippo couldn't keep quiet: “Yes, it's an outrage. European governments send ships to places like the Indian Ocean.

Hildegart published an article on the Indian Ocean and hydrothermal vents.

On the one hand it is sad, on the other hand, I see that there are many people collaborating in our survival.”

“Really?” asked the old man mockingly. “There are many humans saying that plastic is flooding us. Then they come to the sea and leave their rubbish or don't pick up the rubbish they see. What predator harms itself? A mako shark? And the sea would not need their charity if they had not degraded it if its corporations did not plunder our resources. That's why the plastics thing doesn't surprise me: there are bacteria that eat plastics; there are ecosystems that just need humans to stay out of the way. And this from a lover who marches with his house on his back. You wish to return to yours. Why? How long do you think you'll last in it?”

EPILOGUE This story was completed in June 2021. In August, the Mar Menor has once again been filled with decomposing fauna. After the initial denial of anoxia in the first headlines, the Regional Government has admitted this.

The story of Hippo, Joel, the fin whale, the hermit crab, even the story of the jellyfish and the cockles, is far from being the same as that of Hildegart or the IMIDA staff, but their ending is quite similar to that of human children. An ending that, more than an epilogue, begins to resemble an EPITAPH.

EL CLUB DE ALEJANDRÍA Los tres amigos, descansando cómodamente sobre la mesa, mantenían una animada conversación por saber quién de ellos era considerado el más importante para la sabia mujer que pronto haría su aparición en la sala de estudio.

—Oye, tú, Ingo, siempre me he preguntado de dónde proviene tu nombre. Mira que es raro… — quiso saber el cálamo, ese utensilio, similar al lápiz moderno, que utilizaban en época antigua.

—Pues, para que te enteres, tubito de caña —contestó irónica la aludida—, resulta que soy la hija de Ingenio Grande y de Creatividad de Obras, por eso me llaman Ingenia Grandes Obras, y resumido: Ingo. Soy ese halo que inspira a los grandes pensadores, científicos y sabios. Estoy a su lado aunque ellos, en este caso ella, no me vean. Así que imagina si soy importante. ¡Puedo volar a través del espacio y del tiempo!

—Uy, mira esta —intervino el papiro—. Pues yo también puedo viajar a través del espacio y del tiempo. Si me tratan y conservan bien, los mensajes e interesantísimos textos científicos que nuestra amiga escriba sobre mí, se podrán transmitir a generaciones venideras y llegarán a los confines del mundo.

—Sí, sí, ya, rectángulo delgaducho —bromeó la pluma dirigiéndose al papel—, pero si yo no te acaricio expandiendo la negra tinta sobre ti, formando palabras y oraciones, tú te quedarías en blanco por los siglos de los siglos.

—¡Dejad de discutir de una vez, que está a punto de venir y hemos de estar dispuestos para ella!

Aquí, la única realmente imprescindible para la mujer a la que servimos soy yo, esa mezcla de intuición, inspiración y pensamiento crítico. Que sepáis que la última vez que fui a visitar a Venus, pasando antes por la Luna (porque recordad que, como ser etéreo y abstracto que soy, puedo trasladarme más allá de nuestro firmamento), el planeta me dijo, en secreto y al oído, que vio a nuestra sabia señora observándolo con suma atención utilizando ese instrumento al que los humanos llaman astrolabio, y que ella les ayudó a mejorar.

—¡Qué me dices! —exclamó el papiro— ¿Y qué te contó Venus que hizo después ella?

—Pues que estuvo así un buen rato, mirándolo con sus grandes y expresivos ojos ambarinos — contestó Ingo—, dibujó una amplia sonrisa complacida en su rostro y fue hasta esta mesa a anotar algo sobre tu superficie.

—Es verdad, es verdad —dijo el cálamo entusiasmado— ¿Acaso no lo recuerdas, amigo papel?

Yo sí. Me tomó entre sus dedos, me introdujo en el tintero y trazó multitud de números que componían operaciones aritméticas y también tramos de líneas curvas, formando varios círculos y elipses sobre tu piel sepia. Lo que hizo fue extraordinariamente preciso y hermoso a la vez…

—Yo jamás podré verlo… —musitó con cierta tristeza el papel—. Soy como un rostro sin una superficie de metal pulido a la que mirarse.

—Pero siempre podrás oírlo… —le contestó Ingenia Grandes Obras, imprimiendo ternura a sus palabras—, porque siempre habrá alguien a quien nuestra querida maestra lea en voz alta lo que en ti haya impreso. Yo, sin embargo, nunca sabré qué se siente al saberse tocada, acariciada, por sus manos, pues siempre seré invisible para ella, como el soplo de viento que mueve sus cabellos… Así que, a pesar de mi sabiduría, en cierta manera os envidio…

Ante estas últimas palabras los tres amigos quedaron en silencio, pensativos. Un silencio que se extendió a todo lo largo y ancho de aquella espaciosa estancia repleta de armarios recubriendo sus paredes y en los que se disponían rollos y libros en todas y cada una de sus baldas. Cuatro amplios ventanales intencionadamente ubicados del este al oeste de la gran habitación, que mantenían iluminado el espacio cuando el sol aparecía y desaparecía, dejaban en esos momentos penetrar la luz tenuemente anaranjada de esa última hora en las hermosas tardes de Alejandría, previas al inicio de la primavera.

El cálamo, al tiempo, rompió el silencio: —Escuchadme bien: dejemos de lloriquear. Al fin y al cabo, cada uno de nosotros somos imprescindibles para ella dentro de nuestras limitaciones. Ingenia, tú eres invisible pero representas esa fe fuerte e inquebrantable que infunde a la gran filósofa, matemática y astrónoma que es nuestra amiga, la inspiración necesaria para sentirse segura y determinada en su camino, en la defensa de sus ideas. ¿Acaso no fue ella quien dijo: «Defiende tu derecho a pensar, porque incluso pensar de manera errónea es mejor que no pensar»? Pues eso. Y tú, amigo papel —continuó el lapicero de cuña en punta— , ¿qué sería de mí si tú no existieras? ¿Dónde plasmaría ella sus ideas, sus cálculos, sus descubrimientos? ¿En las paredes, en el suelo, o quizás en aparatosas tablillas de arcilla endurecida como hacían los antiguos sumerios al comienzo de la escritura? Puf, qué tontería. Yo, humildemente, soy el instrumento, ese hilo conductor del que se sirve para transformar la idea en realidad física y tangible, en mensaje. Así que os invito a que dejemos de quejarnos y sintámonos todos igualmente importantes.

Entonces, los tres compañeros de fatigas llevaron a cabo un esfuerzo sublime. El cálamo comenzó a moverse desde la esquina de la mesa donde se encontraba, hasta el centro de la misma, allá donde estaba el papel, al tiempo que este levantaba una de sus esquinas sutilmente en un intento por abrazar a su amigo. Ingenia, por su parte, se desplazó sobre ellos velozmente, de un lado a otro, provocando una suave brisa que los arrulló a ambos.

En ese preciso instante, las dos grandes hojas de madera del estudio se abrieron súbitamente y la mujer, de la que instantes antes hablaban, entró con determinación aun con los impedimentos propios de la edad, haciendo volar los pliegues de su túnica acompañando al rápido avance de sus pasos. En el acto, el cálamo volvió a rodar hasta su posición inicial, el papel se dejó caer apresuradamente sobre 2

la tabla e Ingo dejó de moverse para acudir solícita y leal al lado de su admirada amiga. Para la mente atenta de la científica, aquellos sutiles movimientos no pasaron desapercibidos, quedó quieta por unos instantes frente a la mesa, con la vista puesta sobre ella, y al cabo de unos segundos, les dedicó una sonrisa cómplice, susurrándoles: —Queridos amigos, os doy las gracias por estar siempre ahí, dispuestos a servirme. Quiero que sepáis que llegan tiempos difíciles y no sé cuántas estaciones más podremos estar juntos, en esta amada habitación en la que tantas horas hemos pasado, entre estos pergaminos, rollos y libros que contienen tanta sabiduría e inquietudes de quienes en ellos plasmaron su conocimiento. Entre ellos, yo… —La señora dirigió su mirada entonces hasta el ventanal más orientado al oeste. Encaminó hacia él sus pasos vacilantes. Ingenia la siguió. Y las dos se asomaron. La mujer apoyó las manos en el alféizar y elevó su rostro al cielo. La luna llena de marzo comenzaba a iluminar pausadamente con su manto de luz plateada los tejados de la parte de la ciudad que se extendían frente al edificio. La noche se presentaba sin nubes, y los astros y planetas que tanto habían sido observados por la erudita se mostraban en toda su plenitud, con total claridad.

Ella cerró los ojos y suspiró. Pensó que ojalá los hombres que en sus respectivos ámbitos gobernaban la ciudad llegaran a un acuerdo, y los graves disturbios y enfrentamientos acontecidos en los últimos días, debido a sus luchas por ostentar el poder religioso y civil, se vieran abocados a un fin pacífico mediante el raciocinio, la bondad y la empatía…

Alejandría, la célebre y hermosa urbe que debía su nombre a uno de los mayores conquistadores de la historia, la ciudad donde ella, filósofa, matemática, astrónoma, instructora, había nacido, no se merecía eso.

Abrió los ojos y, a pesar del resplandor de las llamas del fuego destructor que se elevaban en la distancia sobre las plazas de algunos barrios, unido a los gritos lejanos de las turbas enloquecidas, se obligó a albergar cierta esperanza.

Más tranquila, la mujer entornó los postigos y se giró, acercándose de nuevo hasta la mesa. Prendió la mecha del candil con la llama de la vela de la pequeña palmatoria que le gustaba mantener siempre encendida y se sentó con gesto cansado pero erguida en su querida cátedra. Cogió su amado cálamo dispuesta a dejar escrito, sobre esa preciada cuartilla de papel virgen, su último descubrimiento antes de marchar a su casa para descansar. Pero de repente se detuvo, le pareció escuchar un algo, un rumor, un bisbiseo continuo como el sonido de las olas calmadas del mar sobre la orilla de la playa… Intrigada, aguzó el oído y prestó atención… Y no le cupo ninguna duda. Eran tres voces conocidas, cercanas, que le susurraban al unísono: —Hipatia… ¡Gracias, Hipatia…! Hipatia de Alejandría…

E Hipatia les correspondió con una sonrisa.

EL MÉTODO CIENTÍFICO Y EL COCHE SOLAR

Eduardo se sienta en su despacho después de un duro día de trabajo. Respira hondo y una sonrisa se le dibuja en el rostro. Después de mucho esfuerzo y dedicación, le acaban de conceder un proyecto europeo para llevar a cabo un proyecto de investigación del que él es el principal responsable.

El atardecer ofrece los últimos rayos de sol que se cuelan por la ventana de su oficina. Con la sonrisa aún vistiendo su cara, Eduardo contempla la pared derecha del cuarto, completamente cubierta de diplomas, certificados y premios. Toda una vida dedicada a la ciencia, toda una vida que converge ahora en un nuevo proyecto, una nueva aventura. Es un reputado científico con un currículo de infarto, pero de todos esos méritos, de todos esos logros, su vista se para en un pequeño cuadro, el más antiguo, un premio de ciencias de su escuela. Eduardo lo coge y, al contemplarlo de cerca, su sonrisa se ensancha aún más. Ese premio fue una lección de vida.

Corría el año 1999 y Eduardo estaba en clase de ciencias. Era un niño aplicado, tenía un objetivo, iba a ser el científico más grande del mundo y nadie se lo iba a impedir.

Así que, la noticia que les traía la profesora Isabel era el reto que había estado esperando.

—Niños, este año vamos a hacer una competición de ciencias. Ciencias del Mar y el Sol. Os plantearé unos cuantos proyectos y tendréis todo el curso para desarrollarlos. A final de curso, se hará una exposición y se elegirá a un ganador.

Los proyectos, como era de esperar, estaban clasificados en diferentes niveles. La mayoría de sus compañeros escogieron participar en un proyecto sencillo relacionado con el crecimiento de las plantas a partir de legumbres y hortalizas de la zona mediterránea.

El proyecto intermedio tenia que ver con los beneficios de la sal marina, muy típico, pero aún así, algunos de sus compañeros también lo escogieron. El proyecto más difícil y el que él iba a elegir pasara lo que pasara era hacer un coche teledirigido que se moviera únicamente con energía solar. Solo una compañera más lo pidió, Marta, que no era ni la más estudiosa ni la más trabajadora de la clase.

—¡Parece un proyecto interesante! No sabría ni por dónde empezar, pero me muero de ganas de intentarlo —le dijo Marta cuando se enteró de que eran los dos únicos alumnos que habían escogido ese proyecto—. Podríamos quedar para ir compartiendo ideas.

Eduardo le contestó con evasivas ¿Es que no se daba cuenta de que eran competencia? Esa misma tarde Eduardo entró en su habitación, se sentó en su escritorio y tras recitar los pasos del método científico como si fueran un mantra, empezó a esbozar un esquema de los diferentes pasos, estructuras y problemas que tendría que afrontar para construir por sí mismo un coche que ganara la competición. Y así, día tras día, fue avanzando.

Observación, investigación, hipótesis, experimentación, análisis de resultados y conclusión. El esquema que estaba construyendo fue poco a poco haciéndose más y más grande. Era un proyecto inmenso que cada vez le robaba más y más tiempo. Estaba aprendiendo de electrónica, programación, diseño en tres dimensiones y un largo etcétera.

Sus padres le interrumpían de vez en cuando para que bajara a comer o a cenar, o para ofrecerle su ayuda al verlo tan entregado.

—No, tengo que hacerlo yo solo, para demostrarme que puedo lograrlo.

Decidió empezar a pasar las tardes en la biblioteca, donde tenía acceso a internet y se aseguraba pocas interrupciones. Una tarde, llegó a la biblioteca y se dispuso a empezar su rutina de estudio, hoy tocaba aprender de circuitería electrónica.

—Observación, investigación, hipótesis, experimentación, análisis de resultados y conclusión. — A pesar de decirlo en voz baja, esta vez su peculiar mantra tuvo respuesta.

—Eso que has dicho es muy raro. — Era Marta. Estaba en la biblioteca y por los dibujos que tenía en la mesa, también estaba trabajando en el proyecto. Eran dibujos geniales de un coche deportivo, espectacular, con alerones que simulaban fuego. Parecía que todo lo que había hecho hasta el momento se basaba en el diseño de la cubierta. Pobrecita, lo que le iba a costar resolver los problemas que él ya había ido resolviendo. Empezaba a dudar de que la infortunada chica pudiera terminar el coche a tiempo, así que pensó en enseñarle un poco en que se basaba su rutina.

—Son los pasos del método científico: observación, investigación, hipótesis, experimentación, análisis de resultados y conclusión. Te recomiendo seguirlos para avanzar en el proyecto.

—¿Y qué quieren decir cada uno de ellos?

Eduardo estaba especialmente agobiado por el proyecto, pero ella, a pesar de ir mucho más retrasada que él, no parecía preocupada en absoluto. Aunque no le apetecía 2

perder el tiempo de esa manera, lo cierto era que le apetecía más hablar del método científico que ponerse a estudiar circuitos eléctricos.

—Pues verás, son pasos que se suelen seguir para analizar un problema o llevar adelante una investigación. Por ejemplo, nosotros tenemos que hacer un coche que se mueva con energía solar. El primer problema que podríamos tener es como transformar la energía solar en eléctrica. Eso sería la observación del problema. Luego vendría la investigación, mi parte favorita, que es cuando buscas información para entender en profundidad el problema; eso te permite desarrollar una teoría de como podrías solucionarlo basándote en conceptos que otros científicos han desarrollado antes que tú, eso es la hipótesis. Luego solo tienes que probar si el problema se ha solucionado con un experimento y analizar el resultado. Tanto si todo va bien como si sale tremendamente mal, podrás sacar conclusiones que te ayuden a seguir adelante con tus proyectos.

—¡Guau! Eso parece súper emocionante por como lo cuentas. No había pensado en la cantidad de problemas que tendremos que solucionar para hacer que el coche se mueva. ¿Has avanzado mucho con el tema de usar la luz solar?

—Es un tema complejo, por ahora estoy aprendiendo de circuitos eléctricos, pero tengo un montón de información para aprender de paneles solares; creo que será la parte más difícil.

—¿Y el diseño? Es la parte que llevo más avanzada. Mira el mío. ¿Te gusta?

Eduardo asintió y siguió trabajando, había perdido mucho tiempo con Marta esa tarde.

Los meses pasaron y la fecha del concurso se aproximaba. Había hecho multitud de esquemas, tenía todas las piezas que creía necesitar compradas y organizadas. Decidió que tenía que ponerse a trabajar en el montaje. Los meses aprendiendo de circuitería le ayudaron mucho y pronto tuvo una estructura bien montada, solo necesitaba cambiar la fuente de alimentación a una que se alimentara de energía solar. Los artículos que había encontrado para estudiar la construcción de células fotovoltaicas eran complejos; le iba a costar mucho construir una lo suficientemente potente como para mover el coche.

Un día, estando en la biblioteca, le llegó un email de Marta. Adjuntaba un articulo muy completo sobre la fabricación de diferentes tipos y tamaños de paneles solares. Le

ayudó mucho, pero después de mucho esfuerzo, solo fue capaz de fabricar una endeble y poco eficiente placa solar.

El día de la competición llegó. Estaba tremendamente orgulloso de su prototipo.

Sorprendentemente, Marta también llevó un coche completo con el diseño que Eduardo recordaba de sus dibujos. Los paneles solares de Marta eran mucho más elaborados que los suyos.

En la prueba final para decidir al ganador, el coche de Marta superó en velocidad y autonomía al de Eduardo, así que solo recibió un segundo premio.

Ese era el premio que Eduardo estaba sujetando entre las manos. En ese momento, Marta entró en su despacho.

—Sabes que yo tengo uno igual, pero de primer premio, ¿verdad? —se mofaba de él siempre que podía.

—¿Recuerdas lo que me dijiste cuando fui a preguntarte por el coche y los paneles solares hecho una furia?

Marta dudó un segundo. Se conocían desde hace tanto tiempo que veía que le hacía la pregunta en serio.

—Te sorprendió que mientras tú te habías empeñado en entender cada detalle, desarrollar cada componente y fabricar cada pieza, yo me había quedado con tu idea de método científico. Al investigar, había contactado con cada uno de los autores de los artículos. Al decirles que estaba construyendo un coche para una feria de ciencias en mi instituto, todos y cada uno me ofrecieron su ayuda y colaboración. Recuerdo que incluso me invitaron a venir a esta misma universidad a construir mis paneles solares.

—Ese día aprendí que para hacer buena ciencia es mejor trabajar en equipo. A día de hoy, después de haber conseguido este proyecto, creo que es la mejor lección que he recibido en mi vida.

—Ya sabes lo que dicen: «Camina solo y llegarás más rápido, camina acompañado y llegarás más lejos». Baja, que nuestro equipo ha traído todo un banquete para celebrarlo.

LA ESTRELLA DE SOFÍA

Sofía llevaba meses esperando aquella noche de agosto en la que iría con su familia a ver las perseidas sobre el cielo de Atenas. En el colegio le habían explicado cuál era el origen de esa lluvia de estrellas y le habían contado que había quien creía que cada estrella fugaz —ella ya sabía que eran fugaces, pero no estrellas— era una oportunidad para pedir un deseo. Sofía no creía en esas cosas, pero había decidido probar y ver qué pasaba. Total, no perdía nada por intentarlo.

Era una noche clara y sin nubes y, además, en la ciudad se había producido una avería en la red eléctrica que apagó las farolas y encendió las estrellas. Sofía estaba tumbada en una manta que compartía con su hermano Basil. Los dos jugaban, maravillados, a contar el número de estrellas fugaces que conseguían detectar. Llegó un momento en que se solapaban tanto en el tiempo que era imposible llevar la cuenta. Entonces Sofía recordó su propósito de pedir un deseo. En parte quería refutar esas supercherías con su propia experiencia. Así, podría confirmar en primera persona que la lluvia de estrellas no necesita tener poderes mágicos para ser asombrosa. Sin embargo, una pequeña parte de ella deseaba que funcionara. Con todas las estrellas que estaban cayendo —ella prefería llamarlas «trocitos de cometa»—, quizá con alguna podría funcionar, aunque fuera «por pura estadística», que era algo que también había empezado a aprender en clase.

Entonces, se concentró en su deseo. Llevaba mucho tiempo imaginando cómo sería la época en la que vivieron los grandes científicos que poblaron las tierras que ella transitaba cada día para ir al colegio y que caminaron sobre el suelo en el que ella ahora se recostaba para mirar el mismo cielo que ellos miraron. Y ese era su deseo: poder viajar muchos siglos atrás para ver en primera persona el nacimiento del conocimiento que a ella tanto le fascinaba.

Sofía cerró los ojos con todas sus fuerzas pensando en ello mientras su hermano seguía tratando de contar destellos en voz alta: doscientos treinta dos, doscientos treinta y tres, doscientos treinta y cuatro…. Entonces, abrió los ojos y vio una estrella que venía directamente hacia ella, mucho más brillante que el resto y de un color distinto. Solo ella parecía darse cuenta. Sus padres miraban al cielo tranquilos y relajados, y su hermano, a su lado, proseguía con su incesante tarea de contar trocitos de cometa. Sofía no se asustó, pero sí sintió una enorme curiosidad por esa estrella que continuaba acercándosele. Y, de repente, ocurrió. La luz de la estrella la rodeó y, lo que hacía un momento era oscuridad, ahora era luz. Seguía estando tumbada, pero ahora se encontraba en un camastro y ya era de día: hora de ir al colegio.

Se desperezó y enseguida se dio cuenta de que no estaba en casa. Todo era igual, pero, a la vez, todo era distinto. Se levantó y salió por la puerta del lugar en el que estaba. Las calles no tenían asfalto y los viandantes llevaban unas ropas extrañas, como si estuvieran participando en una de esas representaciones de la Grecia antigua que hacían para los turistas. Sofía no tenía miedo. Además, nadie reparaba en ella, vestida con su pantalón vaquero y su camiseta morada con flores. Nadie advertía su presencia, así que ella podía reparar en cada detalle que encontraba. Además, no sabía dónde tenía que ir, ni por dónde, pero tampoco dudaba ni titubeaba a la hora de seguir un camino, como si algo en su interior se lo fuera dictando.

Y así, sin saber cómo, llegó a una casa que le llamó la atención. No tenía nada de especial: era una casa baja, como todas las de aquel lugar y como las del pueblo de su abuela Sofía. La puerta estaba entornada, como casi todas las que había ido encontrando a su paso. Pero algo le dijo que debía entrar precisamente en aquella casa. Abrió poco a poco la puerta y vio en su interior a un señor con barba que parecía dormir plácidamente tumbado en una cama. Le recordaba mucho a su abuelo Vassilios cuando era más joven.

Sofía entró en la casa y comenzó a ver mapas y esferas hechas de barro. Dudó por un instante si aquel señor era un marino o un futbolista, aunque pronto descartó la segunda opción: esos balones debían producir unas dolorosas lesiones al patearlos… Tras acercarse a la cama y comprobar que el caballero seguía profundamente dormido, continuó mirando aquellos documentos esparcidos por toda la habitación, en los que descubrió que no solo había mapas. También había cálculos y dibujos de esferas, y flechas y formas geométricas. Sofía se puso a examinarlos uno a uno y enseguida consiguió entender todo aquello: ese señor había pasado la noche —esa y, probablemente, varias anteriores— intentando calcular la medida de la circunferencia de la Tierra.

Pero Sofía pronto se dio cuenta de que había muchos tachones y, también, documentos esparcidos por el suelo, probablemente fruto de la frustración de aquel hombre. Ella pensó que jugaba con ventaja porque sabía cuánto medía la circunferencia de la Tierra. Se lo habían contado un par de días antes en Geografía y ella había estado leyendo sobre lo importante que había sido conocer este dato, sobre todo para los navegantes, que con sus viajes habían contribuido al progreso de las sociedades a lo largo de la historia. Tras unos minutos, detectó fácilmente el error en aquellos cálculos. Un error que le pareció muy tonto y que pensó que probablemente se había debido a la obcecación de ese señor, como le ocurría a ella con sus deberes cuando estaba muy cansada. Cogió lo que más se parecía a un bolígrafo y corrigió los cálculos sin dar demasiada importancia al asunto.

Al fin y al cabo, lo importante era el método que había empleado aquel científico—ahora ya tenía clara su profesión— para llegar a plantear esos cálculos.

Jugueteaba con las esferas que había sobre la mesa y las estanterías, cuando el señor durmiente emitió un sonido distinto, como si fuera a despertar. Sofía se escondió con agilidad bajo la mesa y vio cómo aquel hombre se levantaba de la cama y se dirigía, con gesto de preocupación, a continuar revisando sus escritos. Al llegar a la mesa y ojear los primeros cálculos, reparó en el tachón que corregía el error. Siguió inspeccionando los documentos y, con el pulso acelerado, comprobó que todo encajaba, que los cálculos eran correctos. Que el enigma, por fin, estaba resuelto. Eratóstenes nunca supo por qué, pero en aquel instante sintió el impulso de mirar bajo su mesa. Y allí vio a una niña acurrucada que parecía estar quedándose dormida y que, sonriente, le guiñó un ojo antes de caer en los brazos de Morfeo.

Sofía despertó mecida por un movimiento rítmico y cuidadoso. Abrió los ojos levemente y vio que iba en brazos de su madre, casi llegando a su cama. Le preguntó cómo la habían encontrado y su madre no entendió la pregunta. Simplemente la habían recogido, dormida, de la manta en la que estuvo contemplando la lluvia de estrellas. Sofía supo aquella noche que, a veces, los sueños se cumplen.

LA FUENTE ERRANTE

Tanto tiempo en este laberinto de rocas que ya dudo de si todo este esfuerzo servirá de algo.

Desplomó su equipo y se dejó caer agotado. Pero no puedo regresar aún o seré la burla del pueblo.

Cobijado de aquel sol infernal sacó de su mochila el material de dibujo y se dispuso a trazar el paisaje tan fiel a la realidad como fuera posible. Para ello, contaba con las anotaciones de la última jornada: cálculos de pendientes, la orientación de las laderas, el tipo de roca y vegetación... Quién sabe si todo aquello que había observado podría ser útil. Al terminar, repasó el resultado de esos días: el primer mapa cartográfico de la Sierra, un conjunto de laderas superpuestas que acababan abruptamente en la línea de costa. «Aquí están las pruebas que necesito— pensó—. El Consejo tendrá que tomar en serio mis ideas».

El joven reanudó su marcha hacia el pico más alto. Tras días, su expedición terminaría allí.

Confiaba en divisar el mar de nuevo, había quedado atrás hace semanas, cuando abandonó su casa para explorar los montes. Sabía que había sido muy osado: ¡qué sabría él de montañas si era un simple pescador! Su única herencia eran unas manos hábiles para atar cabos y trenzar redes. Aun así, contaba con la intuición para interpretar las nubes, orientarse por medio de las estrellas y había aprendido a manejar los instrumentos de navegación con gran maestría.

El verano estaba siendo extremadamente seco, raramente los cubos sacaban agua de los pozos y, cuando lo hacían, era de mala calidad. Los viajes a las balsas de la población más cercana eran largos y empezaban a crear disputas entre sus habitantes. El Consejo municipal, preocupado, por fin accedió a escuchar su proyecto: —Hay que construir un canal a través de la sierra, encontrar la línea de mayor pendiente y dejar que el agua llegue de forma natural hasta el pueblo.

Pensaba que así aprovecharían las lluvias lejanas y no solo las que caían sobre los pozos de las casas y campos. Muchas tardes de mal tiempo, al regresar al puerto, había visto correr torrentes de agua por las laderas de la montaña y estaba convencido de que la mayoría vertían al sur. Por supuesto, su plan no era perfecto y ese zote de Pedro desmoronó su exposición: —En estas tierras el agua aparece y desaparece según su capricho. Puedes canalizar toda la sierra y el agua evitará el canal, parece que se burle de nosotros. Ve al monte a buscar esos ríos que ves desde tu barco. Correrás la misma suerte que el viejo rey, que perdió la cabeza en busca de la fuente errante.

Álvaro tomó la provocación como una oportunidad. Le fastidiaba que se burlasen de él, pero ante todo anhelaba demostrar que su teoría era cierta.

Esas jornadas solitarias habían sido más llevaderas porque al llegar la noche Álvaro compartía refugio con un joven pastor, Óscar. Entre historias del mar y la montaña habían hecho buenas migas.

Aunque Óscar admiraba el empeño de su compañero en esa expedición, dudaba de la utilidad real del mapa.

—Las formas de esta montaña son caprichosas —dijo Óscar—. Encuentras cuevas y peñascos como si alguien los moldeara a su gusto y les diera un alma propia. En tono más serio añadió: «Dicen que la montaña engulló al rey y a su séquito cuando buscaba el origen de la fuente errante, que bebió de ella y quedó embrujado; era el agua más fresca y clara que había probado jamás. ¿No crees que te puede pasar igual?»

—Eso son supercherías para alejar a los niños de las montañas. Lo importante es conocer el terreno y elegir la ruta óptima para recoger la mayor cantidad de agua con el mínimo esfuerzo. Siempre hay una explicación para todo, hasta para estas rocas con alma.

—¿Y si lejos del pueblo tampoco llueve? ¿De qué servirá el canal?

De repente un aparatoso y lejano trueno asustó a ambos. Para Álvaro, aquel diluvio fue un pequeño éxito en su argumentación. Urgía ponerse a cubierto.

Lo que ocurrió después parecería un sueño, si aquel sueño no fuera tan real como una larga caída al vacío. El suelo donde descansaban se desmoronó y ambos cayeron varios metros hasta un torrente de agua. Fueron arrastrados con tal fuerza, que apenas lograban respirar por momentos. El repentino tobogán subterráneo desembocó en un extenso lago no muy profundo, aunque ambos sabían nadar.

La oscuridad allí no era total gracias a pequeñas grietas en lo alto de la bóveda que los cubría. Cuando sus ojos se acostumbraron a la escasa luz, reunieron los restos de los enseres que habían caído con ellos y se recostaron en la orilla más próxima. Estaban totalmente desorientados y asustados.

—Te dije que la montaña está maldita. Ahora que nos ha tocado a nosotros, ¿ya crees que se traga a la gente?

—Bueno, por ahora seguimos vivos. Tal como hemos entrado, saldremos.

Observó a su alrededor, las paredes eran resbaladizas, en lo alto, el techo estaba cubierto de estalactitas. No servía de nada quedarse allí esperando que alguien escuchara sus gritos.

—¡Mira! El agua fluye por esa gruta, sigámosla.

—Es de locos, si seguimos al agua, nos alejaremos más de la superficie y no encontraremos una salida.

Pero no había más opciones que seguir caminando. A tientas o con antorchas improvisadas, descubrían grutas fantasmales, pequeños arroyuelos, pozas grandes y pequeñas, bóvedas inmensas que sobrecogían; no entendían cómo el agua había podido tallar la roca de esa manera.

Nadie sabe si pasaron días o semanas, ni qué camino habían seguido hasta ese momento.

Dormían cuando no podían más y racionaban los escasos víveres. De vez en cuando, les sorprendían pequeños rayos de luz. Tenía la esperanza de que la superficie continuara estando cerca, pero cualquier esfuerzo por alcanzarla era inútil. Al menos, estaban juntos y, cuando uno se daba por vencido, el otro le alentaba a seguir caminando. El mapa dibujado con tanto esfuerzo e ilusión sirvió de antorcha en la última jornada. Pero a Álvaro ya no le preocupaba, había entendido que aquellas montañas jugaban a su favor, eran el almacén de la tan apreciada agua dulce. Lástima que nadie allí afuera lo supiera.

De repente, a Óscar lo despertó una brisa fresca con olor a salitre. Corrieron en busca de la entrada de aire. Conforme más avanzaban, más fuerte se oía el rugido del agua al caer, el rugido de una cascada. A sus pies, encontraron otra gruta con un potente caudal desde el que llegaba la brisa del mar.

—Tengo un buen presentimiento, Óscar.

—¿Tenemos otra opción? —preguntó con una media sonrisa.

—Me temo que no tan rápida.

Saltaron a la corriente sin conocer las consecuencias de su atrevimiento. La montaña los devolvió al mar. Alcanzaron la orilla exhaustos por la emoción y el cansancio. Entre risas, llantos y gritos de victoria, sintieron el aire fresco de la libertad. Habían vencido a la maldición.

Caminaban desarrapados pero felices. A unos kilómetros de casa, continuaban sintiendo incredulidad ante el final de su aventura: —¿Tú has visto esos ríos subterráneos como yo, verdad?

—¡Que si los he visto! ¡Nos han arrastrado durante horas, hemos navegado lagos y hasta hemos buceado una montaña! No entiendo cómo seguimos vivos.

—¡Pero que feliz hallazgo, Óscar! Olvídate de los canales a través de la sierra. El agua volverá al pueblo como hemos vuelto nosotros a la superficie”.

—Pobre de ti, has perdido la cabeza del todo. ¿Cómo piensas sacar agua dulce del mar?

—Piensa, le enseñaremos otra salida a esos ríos, dejaremos de esperar las tormentas sobre nuestras cabezas y las buscaremos a nuestros pies.

—¿Tú crees que nos tomarán por locos en el pueblo?

—Venga, anímate. ¡La leyenda de la fuente errante nos precede! Además, dudo que seamos los primeros en tener esta idea, necesitaremos herramientas, ¡y libros!

Aquella mañana, el ingeniero francés Henry Darcy recogía de la imprenta los primeros ejemplares de Las fuentes de la villa de Dijon, que convertiría a Dijon en la primera ciudad europea con un sistema moderno de distribución de agua. Aquel libro también describía por primera vez la Ley de Darcy: la respuesta de Álvaro para abrir un paso al agua por un medio poroso natural que la conduciría hasta la nueva fuente de pueblo. Era 1856, las luces de la Ilustración brillaban más cerca.

MI CORAL Hoy es el día. Lo tengo todo listo: el cartel, el álbum de fotos encima de la mesa, el ordenador, su tarta preferida. Tengo tantas ganas de verla, que las horas se me están haciendo demasiado largas. Echo mucho de menos sus abrazos, su mirada, su presencia, su compañía, su olor, sus besos. Echo de menos hasta discutir con ella. Si he podido resistir medio año sin verla, creo que podré aguantar un par de horas más. No puedo creer que por fin, hoy, mi madre vuelva a casa.

Nunca había estado tanto tiempo separada de ella. Se fue con la idea de volver a los dos meses —¡que ya me parecía muchísimo!—, pero en la expedición surgieron imprevistos; tuvieron que cancelar dos veces el vuelo y empezó el estado de alarma en España. Luego llegó el cierre de fronteras por el Covid y hubo que quedarse tres meses más en Australia.

Mi madre es bióloga marina y dirige un grupo de investigación de los arrecifes de coral en la reserva natural de las islas Columbretes. Desde hace años, durante casi toda mi vida, realiza un seguimiento científico de más de 200 colonias en este espacio protegido del Mediterráneo. Es una apasionada de su trabajo, hasta el punto de que nunca me llama por mi nombre, prefiere llamarme Coral. Aún hay veces que se enfada con mi padre por haberle quitado la idea de la cabeza y no haberme registrado así, porque para ella son los seres vivos más bellos, excepcionales y con más carisma de la Tierra. Quién me iba a decir hace unos meses que echaría tanto de menos una de sus historietas del mar antes de irme a dormir.

Hemos hecho muchas videollamadas, no todo el tiempo que hubiésemos querido, porque ha habido días que por el cambio de hora ya estaba dormida y hablaba solo con mi padre. El pobre ha hecho todo lo posible por entretenerme, ¡sobre todo cuando no había colegio! En el confinamiento ya no sabía qué juego, manualidad, reto o pastelito cocinar para que pasáramos un buen rato y no estuviera con la tableta o viendo la tele. ¡No sé por qué le tiene tanta manía a las pantallas! Ahora, con 12 años, aún no tengo móvil y no para de repetirme que cuando me den mi primer teléfono será el peor regalo que me podrán hacer. Yo estoy ansiosa por comprobarlo.

Tengo muchas ganas de contarle que algo ha cambiado en mí. Yo también estoy sintiendo una atracción fuerte por el mar. Lo primero que quise hacer cuando nos dejaron salir en la franja horaria del confinamiento fue pasear por la orilla de la playa y, aunque notaba el agua muy fría, no dudé en meterme. Quise sentir las olas en mi piel. Desde entonces, tengo una sensación de querer estar cerca, de preocuparme por lo que ocurre dentro de los océanos. Incluso he estado leyendo algunos libros que me había recomendado mi madre hace tiempo y su informe científico anual sobre los arrecifes de coral. He necesitado ayuda y muchas horas para poder asimilarlo todo; no

tenía ni idea de que estaban catalogados como una especie en peligro de extinción a causa, sobre todo, del calentamiento global. ¡Desconocía tantas cosas! Empecé a entender la excepcionalidad de los corales de la que me hablaba mi madre: son estructuras simples en su exterior pero complejas en su interior. Se ve que este animal tiene una estructura compuesta por millones de seres marinos muy pequeños llamados pólipos, que se parecen a bocas rodeadas de tentáculos. En el interior de sus tejidos hay unas microalgas que producen la fotosíntesis y les sirven de alimento. A medida que crece, el esqueleto que tienen debajo también lo hace. Me da vergüenza haber pensado que eran simples rocas de colores vivos. Aluciné al saber que, en condiciones adecuadas, pueden vivir durante siglos, pero que en los últimos 30 años hemos perdido el 50% de los arrecifes del mundo. En su informe también encontré unas gráficas de cómo está subiendo la temperatura del mar y las predicciones de cómo van a cambiar en un futuro. Dentro de 25 años, estarán en aguas tan calientes que no lo soportarán. ¡No podía creerlo! Cuando se las enseñé a mi padre, deseando haberlo entendido mal, me aclaró que si no ralentizamos nuestras emisiones, se seguirán muriendo año tras año, blanqueándose al perder el animal que llevan dentro. Los arrecifes actúan como guardería para los organismos y peces pequeños y son fundamentales para los océanos. ¡Son hasta más importantes que los árboles de los bosques! Sin ellos, desaparecen especies marinas pequeñas, luego grandes y después muchos más ecosistemas de los que dependen las personas. En nuestro planeta todo está conectado. Por eso, el trabajo de mamá y su equipo es tan importante.

Mi padre, que es el mayor fan de mi madre, o como yo le llamo, su seguidor más fiel, siempre me cuenta que, antes de que yo naciera, se dedicaba a hacer reportajes fotográficos y la seguía en todas sus aventuras científicas. Sus fotos preferidas son las de la expedición para la conservación de tortugas bobas en el canal de Menorca. Las experiencias que peor recuerda, cuando se hundió el barco petrolero Prestige y fueron voluntarios para limpiar de chapapote las costas gallegas. Me explicó que él también aprendió mucho en esos viajes y que lo que mucha gente no sabe es que el 90% del calor creado por el dióxido de carbono que producimos es absorbido por el océano; si este no moderase tanto calor, la temperatura de la atmósfera ascendería hasta unos 50º.

Un aumento de dos grados en la temperatura del mar, provoca que el coral muera. Es como si nuestro cuerpo pasara de 37ºC a 39ºC permanentemente, no lo podríamos resistir. ¡Si se sigue la tendencia actual, en menos de 30 años, el blanqueo anual matará a la mayoría de nuestros arrecifes!

En la reserva natural de las islas Columbretes han encontrado algunos corales que tienen la capacidad de recuperarse después de episodios de mortalidad masivos causados por el aumento de la temperatura. Este mecanismo de supervivencia, conocido como rejuvenecimiento, solo se ha descrito hasta ahora en fósiles. Con el hallazgo, mi madre contactó con colegas del Programa de Monitoreo del Instituto Australiano de Ciencias Marinas y, así, poder hacer una colaboración para 2

buscar soluciones en la Gran Barrera de Coral, la especie viviente más grande de la Tierra, que es visible incluso desde el espacio exterior. Una lástima que no se vea desde mi casa para poder estar con ella.

Me costó comprender muchos conceptos, pero me quedó claro uno: es muy difícil transmitir lo que está pasando debajo del mar porque no lo vemos. Los seres humanos tenemos la idea de que los océanos son tan grandes, tan extensos, tan resistentes que parece que da igual lo que hagamos con ellos. No somos conscientes de que nuestras acciones darán forma a todo lo que vendrá después y yo no quiero dejar pasar más tiempo, he estado dormida, quiero hacer algo ya. Involucrarme como mis padres.

Empecé a hacer una pancarta con frases de concienciación y motivación, con frases que había aprendido de la documentación de mi madre sobre los arrecifes de coral y que hasta entonces ignoraba. También hice un álbum con las especies del Mediterráneo en peligro de extinción: el coral rojo, las praderas de posidonia oceánica, las poblaciones de gorgonias y las nacras, entre otras muchas. Intenté pensar como una investigadora. Ella me dice que el último paso de un trabajo científico siempre ha de ser compartir los resultados. Así que, junto a mi padre, creé una cuenta en todas las redes sociales que conozco con el nombre «Mi Coral». Gracias a nuestros amigos y compañeros, ya nos sigue mucha gente y nos están ayudando a dar difusión a nuestro proyecto para poder concienciar al máximo número de personas.

Oigo las llaves de la puerta, miro el cartel, el álbum de fotos encima de la mesa, el ordenador, su tarta preferida.

—¡Mamá!

—¡Mi Coral!

UNA TRAMA MENOR Para Joel, una tortuguita con memoria que se preocupa por su Hogar, que viaja y nada con sabiduría.

«Solo si les comprendemos, podremos empatizar.

Solo si empatizamos, podremos ayudarles.

Solo si les ayudamos, se salvarán».

Jane Goodall «El mar, el gran unificador, es la única esperanza del humano. Ahora, más que nunca, aquella vieja frase tiene un sentido literal: estamos todos en el mismo barco».

Su silueta se apreciaba pese a la distorsión ondulada de la laguna. Hippo ya había visto a una de aquellas criaturas con anterioridad, por lo que permaneció quieto, mostrando cautela. La niña tendría unos seis años y no portaba objetos sospechosos, aunque, sin duda, suponía una inminente amenaza.

Recordó lo sucedido a su querida bailarina, cómo la encontró presa de una cruel red de pesca. Tal pensamiento le hizo tambalearse y perder el equilibrio en un instante: sus aletas dorsales no impidieron que cayera hasta una hoja de caulerpa sobre la cual enrolló su cola a modo de ancla, mutando de amarillo a marrón en un intento de pasar desapercibido. «De nada le sirvió a mi bailarina», pensó, y se vio a sí mismo el día en que la conoció, trompa con trompa frente a ella, danzando y deshaciéndose en chorros de agua para mostrar que su vientre masculino era capaz de albergar vida.

Eso tuvo lugar en su primer cumpleaños, había pasado otro año desde que le arrebataran a su amada; ahora le quedaba por delante la mitad de su existencia y no deseaba perderla de forma prematura y estúpida.

Trató de sobreponerse. Buscaría algunas larvas; ya había comido cincuenta veces ese día, más todavía se sentía hambriento. Los berberechos, recelosos, castañeaban la concha a su paso. «Van a lo suyo», pensó.

De repente, la divisó con uno de sus ojos. Estaba seguro de que aquella vez no escaparía. Era una enorme bola blanquecina aproximándose hacia él de forma fantasmagórica. Se dio la vuelta como un niño asustado. Sin embargo, ningún tentáculo

lo aprisionó. Qué extraño. Habría jurado que se trataba de una medusa. Cubierto de sedimentos, ascendió cerca de la orilla. Demasiado cerca. Junto al muelle, un cachorro humano aprovechó la ocasión: — ¡Mira, mamá! ¡Un caballito!

— Mételo en el cubo y se lo enseñamos a tu hermana. Después, lo soltaremos.

Una cárcel humana no habría sido peor. Finalmente, fue depositado en la orilla del «Mar mayor». Había tenido la fortuna de no acabar de llavero.

Hippo, exhausto, se refugió cerca del «seco», lejos de la pradera de posidonia.

Entonces, se avivó su esperanza: con suerte, conocería a una leyenda, el anciano ermitaño de las dunas. El sabio le ayudaría a regresar a su hogar. Su ilusión momentánea se vio truncada al atisbar un caparazón bastante más grande que él al acecho.

Atónito, dio media vuelta y se quedó quieto, pero, con el ojo izquierdo, divisó otra tortuga boba nadando directa hacia su igual. El enfrentamiento circular se saldó con un mordisco de la segunda a la primera Caretta, que huyó frustrada lejos de aquella playa.

Seguidamente, Hippo, quien trataba de pasar desapercibido junto a un alga, fue descubierto por la recién llegada, quien se había presentado a sí misma como Joel como «Joel», nombre humano impuesto en el IMIDA (Centro de recursos marinos del Instituto Murciano de Investigación). La paciente experta había sido trasladada al centro antes de eclosionar y criada en cautividad a fin de asegurar su supervivencia frente a depredadores comunes, entre quienes, paradójicamente, se encontraban los propios humanos.

— ¿Cuál es la paradoja, tortuga boba? —preguntó Hippo cansado—. Tu hermana de especie ha estado a punto de convertirme en plancton y tú te has enfrentado a ella… ¿Quizá por el alimento?

— No — Respondió Joel tras meditarlo Joel—, no me gustan los hippocampus. Pensaba que la presa era una dorada.

Hippo rio expulsando burbujas por su trompa: — ¡Doradas! Debes saber que tienen todas el vientre lleno de plástico.

Unidos por aquel eslabón de la cadena alimenticia, cada uno a un lado, nadaron juntos un buen rato sin percatarse del rumbo que habrían de tomar. Hippo le contó a Joel que se encontraba lejos de su hogar, pero, que aprovecharía para conocer aquel mar desconocido al cual los humanos llamaban «nuestro». Tras mencionar la anécdota de la bolsa de plástico, Joel compartió con el caballito sus dudas más profundas. Después de todo, los humanos del IMIDA habían sido sus salvadores en tierra firme. Por contra, estaba el hecho de que las tortugas comen medusas y muchas confunden las bolsas de

plástico fabricadas por humanos con ellas y se las comen. De tener vello, a Hippo se le hubiera puesto «de punta». ¡Si no hubiera tortugas marinas en el mar comiéndose a las medusas, estas proliferarían tan rápido que posiblemente sería imposible bañarse para los humanos!

Joel escuchaba atentamente. Agradecía el interés del caballito, que ya tenía

suficiente con los vertidos y la anoxia de su albufera. Si no moría antes, regresaría a desovar a La Manga o a Calblanque.

Tras despedirse, Hippo se propuso regresar al Mar Menor como fuera. Entonces, la arena se diluyó mostrando el hogar del cangrejo viajero. No dudó un segundo en dirigirse hacia su «autocaravana», una minúscula cavidad lacada en plata que pasaba desapercibida tan a menudo, justo lo que su dueño deseaba. Hippo no podía dejar pasar aquella oportunidad, ya ni sentía apetito. Golpeó suave pero tajante la cáscara con su trompa varias veces hasta que una pinza cortante fue esgrimida con furia hacia su tez.

—¡Cuidado! ¡Qué carácter! Es impropio de un asceta como usted.

El cangrejo asomó su cabeza perplejo y enfurecido: — ¿Impropio? ¡Allanamiento! — añadió pellizcando sus barbas— ¿A qué viene a molestarme un ridículo pseudoequino? ¿No ve claramente que no deseo compañía?

Hippo «frunció su hocico» y añadió con tristeza: —Ando perdido. Este no es mi hogar.

Después, le contó al ermitaño cómo había sido apresado y transportado en un cubo al lugar equivocado.

— ¡Secuestro! –—se escandalizó él.

Lo más sorprendente era que el propio cangrejo había pasado por una experiencia similar. Así, a Hippo se le reveló el pasado del vetusto sabio, marcado por el romance y el cautiverio.

— Hildegart era toda una profesional —añadió con nostalgia.

La bióloga marina lo había recogido de la playa para estudiar el comportamiento de su ecosistema y la influencia de los vertidos. Tras meses en un acuario a gastos pagados, la alemana lo había devuelto al mar lanzándole un beso. Fin de la historia.

Hippo se acordó entonces de Joel, «nuestra interrelación con la especie humana es innegable y nadie sabe a dónde irá a dar con su esqueleto», había dicho. Al caballito le hubiera gustado acompañar a la tortuga a través del vasto mar, pese a que sabía que resultaba demasiado peligroso. Hippo contó al sabio las aventuras de la tortuga y cómo se despidieron.

—Tras todo aquello, Joel giró sobre sí misma y desapareció.

—¿Y qué esperabas? Esto no es buscando a Nemo —replicó el venerable crustáceo.

Hippo flotaba pensativo. El ermitaño prosiguió: — Otro tema que dará que hablar pronto es el de las extracciones mineras del fondo del mar para conseguir minerales necesarios para los móviles táctiles y demás chismes humanos.

Joel había conocido a una ballena rorcual impresionada por la explotación submarina en Canarias. Hippo no pudo callarse: — Sí, es una barbaridad. Los gobiernos europeos envían barcos a sitios como el Océano Índico.

— Hildegart publicó un artículo sobre el océano Índico y las chimeneas hidrotermales.

— Por un lado da pena, por otro, veo que hay mucha gente colaborando en nuestra supervivencia.

— ¿En serio? —preguntó el anciano con sorna—. Hay muchos humanos diciendo que el plástico nos inunda. Luego, vienen al mar y dejan su basura o no recogen la que ven. ¿Qué predador se perjudica a sí mismo? ¿Un marrajo? Y el mar no necesitaría su caridad si no lo hubiesen degradado, si sus corporaciones no expoliasen nuestros recursos. Por eso, lo de los plásticos no me sorprende: hay bacterias que comen plásticos, hay ecosistemas que solo necesitan que los humanos no intervengan. Y te lo dice un enamorado que marcha con su casa a cuestas. Tú deseas volver a la tuya. ¿Por qué? ¿Cuánto crees que aguantarás en ella?

EPÍLOGO Este relato se terminó de escribir en junio de 2021. En agosto, el Mar Menor ha vuelto a llenarse de fauna en descomposición. Tras la negación inicial de anoxia en los primeros titulares, el Gobierno Regional ha admitido la misma.

La historia de Hippo, Joel, la ballena rorcual, el ermitaño, incluso la historia de las medusas y los berberechos, dista de ser la misma que la de Hildegart o el personal del IMIDA, pero, su final se asemeja bastante al de los niños humanos. Un final, que, más que un epílogo, comienza a parecerse a un EPITAFIO.
