“Making a difference!“ best describes this impactful year at Millersville University’s Office of Visual & Performing Arts. With more than 612 presented performances, hosted events, and external rentals over 271 days during the 2016 – 2017 fiscal year, we are proud to be Lancaster County’s preeminent cultural arts destination and community resource, successfully fulfilling our mission and bettering the visual and performing arts landscape in the region.

On the following pages of this Report, you will find that this year, VPA has seen GROWTH - an increase in daily activities, in overall attendance, in third party uses and in educational outreach – evidencing our vitality and importance to the campus and community as well as our ability to meet the needs of those we are serving. With a primary goal to increase diversity and expand inclusion in our audiences in 2016 - 2017, VPA has focused its attention on ways to provide fulfilling arts experiences for those who might not otherwise have had opportunities to enjoy the arts. Special Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant funding supported the South Central PaARTners, a project that creates artistic residencies in local schools and throughout the region. VPA’s own educational outreach has touched thousands of students, with

participation in the Arts Smarts camps and the MiLLI (Millersville’s Life Long Learning Institute) program seeing a doubling in attendance numbers. As with most organizations experiencing growth, VPA’s greatest assets come in the form of the drive and dedication of our highly skilled employees. Our leadership team consisting of Nathan Cottrell, Barry Kornhauser, Amy Banks and Jay Miller, along with their small-but-mighty staffs, are committed to planning, producing and presenting memorable and life-changing events which fuel the heartbeat of our mission.

In the upcoming year, Millersville University’s Office of Visual & Performing Arts will continue to advance uniquely creative programming, broaden and diversify our audience, enhance and upgrade the arts experience, and cultivate what we do and can do for the campus and community.

The 2016-17 season led to big changes in staff.

After five years, director Laura Kendall received an offer she could not refuse: the position of Vice President of Programming and Education at Omaha Performing Arts, relocating back to her home state. We are grateful to Laura for exceptional leadership, thoughtful programming and a winning smile that continue to steer the Ware Center in a positive direction.

Our valued veteran staff member, office coordinator Emily Laufer, left to pursue an administrative position at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Volunteer Coordinator, Beth Lichty, successfully implemented a new front desk staff program before taking an opportunity with Groff Family Funeral & Cremation Services.

Wes brings his Broadway background as a performer and artistic director to the Ware Center in his new capacity as an event coordinator. He is excited to work with movers and shakers in Lancaster, his home of the last 5 years.

Julie joined our team after completing her master’s thesis in playwriting and drama. She will graduate from Millersville University this year with a MA in English.

Julie has previously taught at ARTS SMARTS CAMP and has worked at American Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Rep, Carnegie Mellon University, and Pittsburgh Public Theatre.

ROBIN ZAREMSKI

INTERIM DIRECTOR

Robin is in her 26th year of working in the music and arts presenting industry, including positions with Universal Music, ArtsQuest, the Screen Actors Guild, and Rondor Music/ Almo Sounds. Before coming to MU, she was the Director of Kutztown University’s KU Presents! Performing Artist Series. Robin is the president of the Board of Pennsylvania Presenters and is a member of the Board of Berks Arts Council, producers of Berks Jazz Fest and Berks Blues Fest.

Marci Nelligan is something of an arts education miracle worker.

Not only is she answering the needs of artists looking for work, she is benefiting students who are being engaged in their studies in robust and creative ways.

on teaching methods in the classroom, as well as help build activities with teachers that benefit their curriculums. “Students engaged with the arts have higher test scores, higher scores on the SATs, much higher rates of graduation, and lower rates of behavior problems (even if they have behavior problems prior to their engagement),” says Marci.

“These data points also improve with the number of hours that a student is engaged in the arts and to which degree they are engaged.”

As an educator for 10 years as well as a published author and poet, Marci’s knowledge of the arts makes her uniquely qualified to create engaging programming for both the receivers of artists’ residencies as well as the artists themselves.

As Program Coordinator of South Central PaARTners, Marci will help bring artists into public schools, senior centers, and other community organizations through artist residencies. She will help educate artists

South Central PaARTners is the regional branch of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Arts-In-Education program.

By introducing communities and artists, Marci facilitates opportunities for art to survive and flourish organically. South Central PaARTners not only benefits the students, it allows artists to develop skills in arts education, providing second income as well marketability for future employment.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT: BARRY KORNHAUSER BARRY KORNHAUSER, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Barry Kornhauser continues to serve this year on the Lancaster Refugee Coalition Youth Committee, the North Museum Community Task Force, as a judge for the library’s Scholastic Writing Awards, and he joined the Public Education & Democratic Action Team. At MU, he serves on the Creative Campus Cohort, the MU Arts Council, the Made In Millersville Committee, the STEAM TEAM Committee, as a Safe-Zone Mentor, and a One Book/One Campus Student Orientation Facilitator. Barry attended the PA Presenters conference, participated in seven webinars offered by the Kennedy Center, the American Alliance for Theatre & Education, and TYA/USA, and received Certificates of Completion in two MU online training courses – EDU: Protect Children, Discrimination & Harassment Prevention for Higher Education, and Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence. For VPA, Barry completed applications and managed grants by the National Endowment for the Arts, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Lancaster County Community Foundation, among others, and arranged assessment for our

many arts programs with MU’s Department of Social Work. He also served as a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts panelist for its Project Stream granting program.

Beyond Pennsylvania in 2016-17, plays Barry authored were performed across the U.S. and as far away as Australia and Myanmar, and the Tony Award-winning regional Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis – named “The #1 children’s theatre in the nation”

by Time Magazine – commissioned him to write an adaptation of the children’s classic Corduroy for its 2017/2018 season, a season which will also feature the remounting of Barry’s play Balloonacy, winner of the American Alliance for Theatre & Education’s (AATE) Distinguished Play Award.

His adaptation of the novella The Devil’s Arithmetic won the 2016 AATE Unpublished Play Project honor.

Barry served as a peer reviewer of an article in the Youth Theatre Journal, and he was also voted “Lancaster King of Happy” by Fig Magazine!

SEASON PREVIEW PARTY: LIGHTING THE WAY TO THE FUTURE Our season preview party was all about looking at the bright future of the arts in Lancaster as we pursued another fantastic year of offering the healing and transformative power of enriching arts programs. Some of our favorite patrons joined us in exploring the season as we represented the breadth of our audience with the concept “What Seat Do You Fill?”.

The evening began with some comedy

by Lancaster Improv Players, and Laura Kendall revealed the new season with the help of these personas as played by Barry Kornhauser (the Nurturer), Amy Banks (the Explorer), Ty Gant (the Creative), and Kelly Milligan (the Enthusiast). We also unveiled exciting ticket offers that we kept available for the entire month so patrons could take time to choose their events, or commit early for future decisions with the “Fly Buy the Seat of Your Pants” gift certificate. After the presentation, we enjoyed a terrific party with a spread by a new downtown Lancaster caterer, Simply from Scratch.

GREAT PARTNERSHIPS REAP MEANINGFUL BENEFITS You might think folks approaching their 70’s begin to enjoy a slower pace in life, but that is not the case for Don Keller, who joined the Ware Center staff in January 2016 through the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). In his role as Communication Specialist, Don’s primary responsibility was crafting all the press releases sent to the local media to announce upcoming shows and events – all 84 of them.

As a result of his contribution to the office, Don ultimately wound up teaching several classes for Millersville’s Life Long Learning Institute (MiLLI).

The SCSEP program partners with over 20 community based, non-profit organizations, “host agencies,” in the region. These agencies help get seniors back to work as they train them on specific jobs with the desired result that they be hired as regular employees. Additionally, AARP offers courses on Resume � Writing and Computer Basics, among others, to encourage participants to continue their education and professional development far beyond retirement.

Though Don left the Ware Center in February 2017 after over a year of employment, he continues to contribute to the Millersville University and the community at large by teaching classes for the MiLLI sessions. His expertise includes creative writing, holistic living, and meditation.

Through participation in the SCSEP program, the Ware Center gives vibrant seniors an opportunity to apply their seasoned skills and talents to further our mission, as well as stay true to our vision: A transformative culture where everyone is engaged in the community and the world.

VOLUNTEER PROGR AM TAKES CENTER STAGE Our 2016-17 year introduced the Volunteer Program – a measure that ensures we continue to integrate members of the community into our operational structure.

The program offers qualified candidates a very special opportunity to provide our staff with invaluable support. Individuals chosen for this position fill three crucial roles, as Guest Ambassador-Front of the House, Communication-Marketing Support, and General Office Support. These potential team members apply, are interviewed, and pass all the necessary clearances.

The program was launched by coordinator Beth Lichty, who enrolled and vetted interested candidates. She chose friendly, capable and outgoing people who would enjoy receiving perks like show tickets and complimentary coffee. “I think the reward to the volunteers is being involved in this vibrant Lancaster arts community and that’s fun,” said Julie Childs, Office Coordinator.

“Also, being needed,” Julie continued. “We rely on their support in many different ways.

Their commitment of time and energy is an essential part of our team.”

Volunteers who started this season and continue to serve are Linda Gleason, Nancy Morrell, and Sherry Green.

Special thanks to Peg Ellison, Rainier Lopez and Marvin Reinhart, who served during this 2016-17 season.

Some of the volunteer responsibilities include: opening the building, answering phones, assisting students and arts patrons by answering questions or direct inquiries; being knowledgeable about the season events, keeping marketing materials updated in the lobby, helping with mailings and promotional material distribution; and keeping office supplies stocked, as well as helping distribute parking passes to students.

Volunteering at the Ware Center can be a rewarding experience. When asked how she benefits, Sherry Green said, “I get a chance to meet new people as well as get to know the staff, I see all the cool things MU is offering, and I get the satisfaction of knowing I’m helping.” The staff certainly appreciates our newest team members.

GROWING FRUITFUL COLL ABOR ATIONS IN MUSIC PRESENTATION Partnerships blossomed this past artistic season thanks to collaborations with The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) and Gretna Music. We offered a series with SFMS, and hosted world-class violinist Hilary Hahn with Gretna Music.

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS), based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a nonprofit education and arts organization dedicated to the advancement, promotion and preservation of traditional, contemporary and international folk music and folk culture. Partnering with Ware, SFMS concerts had exemplary turnout this season and ushered in many new patrons who had not visited the Ware Center before.

The series presented included: Robin and Linda Williams, Charm City Junction and ukulele virtuoso Del Rey. Two additional concert collaborations will be taking place this upcoming artistic season with SFMS. “I was very pleased to have partnered with The Ware Center to present three folk music concerts in the beautiful Owen Salon!” said SFMS Executive Director, Jess Hayden.

“The feedback we heard at concerts from patrons and artists alike was very positive— everyone we spoke to was impressed with the venue, ticketing process, sound, lightening, staff, and general ambiance.”

A highlight of the entire season was presenting Grammy- Award winning violin sensation Hilary Hahn with Gretna Music, a premium local leading presenter of classical music and jazz. This highly anticipated performance was the fourth such collaboration with Gretna, and completely sold out one month before the performance.

According to Gretna Music Artist Director, Carl Kane,

“[The Ware Center] has been open to collaboration, flexible and imaginative in their thinking, and understanding of the challenges faced by a fellow arts presenter,” said Kane. “The staff was professional and a pleasure to work with, providing us with a high level of support. We look forward to future collaborative projects.”

The Ware Center is a place where the world famous and locally grown talent flourish together harmoniously. With our community partnerships such as these, we continue on the promise of our mission and further our role as Lancaster’s Home for Cultural Arts.

BENCHMARK CONSTRUCTS AN

EXTRABIG GIVING PART Y

In conjunction with the Extraordinary Give fundraising event, The Ware Center has partnered with Benchmark Construction to present an extraordinary “giving party” right here in our building.

The annual Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is a one day, 24-hour period of online giving that benefits non-profit organizations that call Lancaster County home. The event is coordinated by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and since it’s inception, ExtraGive has created growing enthusiasm resulting in community pride, as well as increasing contributions. Last year alone, the event raised over 7 million dollars for local charities benefiting a variety of causes including combatting hunger and homelessness, animal welfare, arts and culture, the environment, and education.

Benchmark Construction has been involved with the ExtraGive for the past five years as a Golden Ticket Prize Sponsor – they donate a bonus of $1,000 to a handful of computerized random contributions during a specific timeslot. When they decided to step it up a notch and contribute to the fun, their team chose a downtown location to

have a celebration. “Though we have many ties in downtown Lancaster,” says Alyssa Kurtz, Business Development Assistant, “we have had a fantastic partnership with Millersville University and the Ware Center on one of our projects, so it became the perfect choice to move the party there.”

Indeed the 3-hour “giving party” is quite an event. Open and free to the public, last season the planning team from Benchmark hosted 23 social service organizations that set up tables and displays to market their causes. They created a lively and entertaining evening with hors d’oeuvres provided by a community partner, drinks provided by local wineries and breweries, and musical entertainment by Ben & Joe, a local comedic duo.

“With an open-door party,” said Kurtz, “it’s hard to count the number of people that walk in. However, we had estimated about 350 people stopped by last year.

We definitely feel that this event has gained traction and hear that people make this a “must” on their itinerary of activities for the ExtraGive.”

WORKSHOPS & RESIDENCIES In 2016-17, staff member Barry Kornhauser conducted more than 40 free workshops for such groups as East Petersburg Elementary School, Fulton Elementary School, IU 13’s SEE (Student Enrichment Experience) Program, the Lancaster Youth Arts & Innovation Conference, Landisville Primary Center, Landisville Middle School, Lead4Change, McCaskey High School, Milton Hershey School, the New School, the Pennsylvania High School State Thespian Conference, Shaarai Shomayim, Ubuntu (a new MU youth leadership development program), Washington Elementary School and Wickersham Elementary School.

And here’s some of the feedback received:

“Upon our return to school, the teachers talked with me expressing how much they enjoyed their first visit to the WARE and how much they loved seeing their kids getting excited to test out their acting skills. We hope to come back again to visit in the near future, and thank you so much for engaging our students and letting them test out their creativity!”

In addition, Barry conducted workshops and guest lectures in five MU classes in several different academic disciplines; he was also invited to be a presenter at the first Lancaster Teenage Girl Empowerment Summit, which was attended by 200 seventh grade girls from the School District of Lancaster.

Barry also arranged a working lunch between the Lancaster Commission to Combat Poverty and guest lecturer Michael Rohd who is the Director of the Center for Performance and Civic Practice, a highly regarded organization that explores creative solutions to civic problems.

Rohd presented “Devising Civic Practice: Listening is the New Revolution,” a free lecture at the Ware, as well as a workshop in a Millersville University Social Work class. He was one of 28 guest artists to offer residency activities to MU students this year in such diverse academic disciplines as AfricanAmerican Studies, Biology, Communication, Education, English, Entrepreneurship, Foreign Language, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Social Work, and Wellness. Over 822 students were given such opportunities in 2016-17 (up from 580 the year before).

MU faculty are informed of these opportunities through Faculty Curricular Connections In The Arts, a published manual distributed at the start of each semester. To create this piece, the University’s course catalogue is perused and class content is matched with upcoming presentations. This information is shared with professors through the publication. Many of our faculty choose to enrich their classes by inviting these guest artists to provide experiential learning opportunities, as well as share their knowledge and experience with the MU students.

Events like this are important so that we can learn about those different from us. Loved it!”

860 other Millersville students from additional disciplines - including Art, Disability Studies, Government, History, Integrated Studies, Marketing, Public Relations, and Sociology - were given free tickets to Ware and Winter Center events which had ties to their course work (also an increase from last season’s 328). Student organizations and even the MU baseball team also received complimentary tickets.

Other of our guest artists offered workshops to the community. Of particular note were visits by violin virtuoso Hillary Hahn, who conducted a wonderful masterclass, not only to MU music students but open to students of Lancaster Country Day and guests from Gretna Music, and by Dr. Aomawa Shields, one of our Innovative Lecture series guests. Dr. Shields is an NSF astronomy and astrophysics postdoctoral fellow and a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Shields conducted a free workshop for the STEM Sisters of the School District of Lancaster.

Impossible Izzpossible

FAMILY FUN FEST Danny Weinkauf’s Red Pants Band, Sleeping Beauty, and Erths’ Dinosaur Zoo Live from Australia comprised three-fourths of our 2016-17 Family Fun Fest. But the FFF season began with dance! We had closed last season’s series with a children’s ballet by the Pennsylvania Ballet, so we thought it would be interesting to open this season with a very different dance genre – hip hop.

Impossible Izzpossible was the name of the show, and it gave young people and their parents a lively historical perspective on this art form that has been called America’s newest cultural gift to the world, as was Jazz in the 20th century.

As always, for all of these presentations we have our pre-show partners from the campus and community devising creative activities for the kids with ties to the performance. These partners include The Lancaster Public Library, Power Packs, Fig Magazine, the North Museum, Lancaster Country Day School, the aforementioned Tommy Foundation, Millersville’s Creative Experiences for the Young Child class and ECHO, an Early Childhood student organization, plus two new partners – the Literacy Council of Lancaster/Lebanon and the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Magic Club.

Last year was so much fun.

I so loved all of the children’s enthusiasm! The little refugee children were so full of gloriously huge smilesI almost broke down in tears. I felt like they were so appreciative, and in the scheme of things how little I felt I was offering. But then I just allowed the children to create and smile and I pushed through my initial struggle and felt an immeasurable sense of joy and connection in the time they were at the craft table with me. SCHOOL DAY MATINEES Our three school day matinees this season provided free admission to 785 School District of Lancaster students (from Carter & MacRae, Fulton, Ross, and Wharton Elementary schools).

All received Study Guides connecting the performances to curriculum and academic Standards. One of these events was a showcase of various performing artists at the Pennsylvania Presenters MAPAM Conference hosted by the Ware Center.

One teacher noted:

“On behalf of myself, colleagues and students, we are so incredibly appreciative that we were able to attend the performance. Students that will otherwise not have the opportunity to have such cultural exposure were bowled over, and this morning has brought a repeat of the hope that ‘something like this’ will happen again.”

STUDIO FOR STUDENTS This program of exhibiting the art of local K-12 students from public and private area schools continued to grow in popularity this season. Last year we had five months of exhibits; this year we added a sixth, and schools are now reserving space a year ahead of time.

Along with each month-long exhibition at the Winter Center, we provide an artists’ reception for the participating students’ teachers, families, and friends, and whenever possible a visit to the Eckert Gallery for a talk led by a visiting artist or MU arts staff personnel. MILLERSVILLE LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (MiLLI) We want to offer learning opportunities for all ages, and so have continued and expanded the Millersville Lifelong Learning Institute (MiLLI) program begun last year. Each semester of this program has shown an increase in enrollment. In Fall 2015, the inaugural semester, 55 individuals participated. In Spring 2016 there were 78 enrollments (for a yearly total of 133). In the Fall of this year, 2016, enrollment jumped to 96, and in the Spring of 2017 we reached 121 participants (for a yearly total of 217).

Over a dozen courses are offered each semester, from Astronomy to Mah Jongg, Nature Journaling to Tai Chi.

AUDIENCE PERSPECTIVES Perspectives is another program that expanded considerably this year. This initiative offers free pre-show lectures by local scholars (Millersville, Elizabethtown, and F&M professors) to give context to performances on the Ware or Winter Center stages. These events often play to standing-room-only crowds, and audiences have told us how they find that these talks enrich the performance experience. Last year we offered five of these programs. This year that grew to nine.

OPEN SPACE The Open Space program of the MU Office of Visual & Performing Arts is a call for Millersville student visual artists, musicians, designers, singers, writers, spoken word artists, DJs dancers, filmmakers, composers, theatre makers, DIY creative types, and anyone with a brave, creative spirit to fill an empty physical space on campus with original work, and earn a stipend and production expenses, along with technical and marketing support. This year the organizing theme was “We The People,” drawn both from our First Friday project and the One Book/ One Campus reading – the Pulitzer Prize winning one-act play Disgraced. This was the third year of this program and a group of visual art students led by senior Brett Morgan mounted a ceramic show in the Eckert Gallery in March featuring vessels as symbols of acceptance, with each piece created communally.

WE THE PEOPLE 2016-17 was also the inaugural year of our We the People program of free First Friday performances in Steinman Hall featuring diverse local artists in a variety of genres. The name, inspired by 2016 being a Presidential election year, and the selected events are chosen to highlight the great human mosaic that comprises the American landcape. Seven presentations took place – a staged reading of a play about local women facing life challenges including incarceration, penned by Sandy Asher and performed

by Creative Works Lancaster, a multi-

media performance honoring the 150th anniversary of the 14th Amendment by Theatre for Transformation, a concert by the Harrisburg Gay Men’s Choir, a Gospel celebration in song and dance, a reading by Deaf poet Dr. Meg Day with ASL interpretation, the Paloma Players performing Garcia Lorca’s Yerma largely in Spanish, and the first annual Lancaster County Youth Poetry Slam which was preceded by a Youth Arts & Innovation Conference held at the Ware Center.

We The People will continue in 2017-2018 with nine events already scheduled.

MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY STORYTELLING EXPERIENCE (MUSE) The MU Office of Visual & Performing Arts was also a major participant in yet another new 2016-17 initiative called MUSE. Working with the University’s Departments of Education, English, Social Work, and Theatre, a number of Millersville students were trained in the U.S. Department of Education endorsed Neighborhood Bridges pedagogy developed by the Children’s Theatre Company and University of Minnesota (and brought to Lancaster by Barry Kornhauser) to teach critical literacy through theatre and storytelling. In the Spring of 2017, these students piloted the program in 6 Lancaster County schools, and the program will continue and expand in the years ahead.

SOUTH CENTRAL PaARTNERS The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts selected us to take on the leadership of South Central PaARTners, the regional PCA partnership serving Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, and parts of Chester Counties to bring artist residencies and other programs to schools and community groups in those regions.

Marci Nelligan was hired to assume the position of Program Coordinator in January, and she has been doing a top-notch job.

She hit the ground running the very month she began, hosting the exciting and wellrun regional level National Endowment for the Arts sponsored program Poetry Out Loud recitation contest. Since then, Marci has rostered new artists, hosted an artist showcase, and organized more than a dozen residencies in schools and community centers. Marci also created a mobile art

center—a tricked-out car that carries arts programming to sites; is developing professional development opportunities for artists and teachers; and exploring additional funding support for financially strapped schools and centers. We also have big plans in support of the Governor’s Art Awards being held this fall in Lancaster that will include representation from every school district in Lancaster County.

ON SCREEN/IN PERSON A very exciting new program this year was On Screen/In Person. The Ware Center was one of only eight sites invited to host this unique project of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) which brings new awardwinning films AND their filmmakers to communities. Over the course of this year, we presented six of these events, and all were received with great enthusiasm, breaking attendance records for film presentations at the Ware, often filling Steinman Hall.

Perhaps what made this project so compelling besides the content and quality of the films themselves is that we didn’t just screen the movies, but created a whole series of related campus and community activities with the visiting filmmakers.

Some examples: The first film to come was called Sweet Dreams, which chronicled the work of post-genocide Rwandan women to unite the country through music – and ice cream! The women, from both sides of the conflict, worked together to start a formerly taboo women’s drumming troupe and then became social entrepreneurs bringing the first ever ice cream shop to their country. We offered a pre-screening community forum

to explore issues examined in the movie.

The panel featured Dr. Onek Adyanga, MU professor of History, Mr. Isadore Iradukunda, MU alum, native of Rwanda, Ms. Jessica King, Executive Director of ASSETS (social entrepreneurship agency), Dr. Timothy Shea, MU professor of English/Global Studies (Rwandan visits), and Dr. Rita Smith Wade-El, MU professor of African-American Studies.

The film’s director led a post-screening talkback for the 300 plus patrons who attended, and conducted workshops in MU classrooms. And, perhaps best of all, through a generous donation from Carmen & David’s Creamery, we served ice cream to everyone who came to the movie.

Love Thy Nature, narrated by Liam Neeson, explored global sustainability and the concept of biomimicry. We created a number of free nature excursions for patrons including an early morning bird walk with an MU ornithologist, a tour of the MU herbarium hosted by a Botany professor, the planting of 75 trees and shrubs in partnership with the Lancaster County Conservancy, and a nature journaling opportunity with one of our MiLLI instructors. The pre-screening panel was comprised of Dr. Nadine Garner, Director of Center for Sustainability, Millersville University, Dr. Aaron Haines,

For the film HilIeman: The Perilous Quest to Save The World’s Children about Dr. Maurice Hilleman, the unsung developer of most of our life-saving vaccines, one of our activities was to offer free flu shots to MU students along with a ticket to the movie night. For Real Boy, a documentary about the struggles of a transgender youth and his family, the evening of the screening began with a video greeting

by Dr. Rachel Levine, Physician General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the highest ranking transgender government official in the nation, and it ended with a live miniconcert by transgender singer/songwriter Joe Stevens, who is featured in the film and who came all the way from California to participate.

M-U TH THEATER Of course, as always, the month of July features the M-Uth Theater. Summer 2016 saw a full production of the ensemble’s original suicide-prevention drama Between Apartment 2-B and the End Zone. As always, admission was free, but goodwill donations of $2,676.00 were collected for the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition. A representative from the Coalition wrote:

“Thank you so much for reaching out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County and the Suicide Coalition and for sending us those donations. The kids rocked it at the performance and I’m so glad they were able to share their stories and talent with the audience. Thanks for everything you do.”

The 2017 Ensemble

On July 10, 2017, a new project began, The Song of Freedom, examining a lesser known but defining moment in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement by our mixed-ability ensemble of young people from all walks of life, many referred to us from various area agencies.

Included in the ensemble is a young man who will be beginning his studies in the fall with Millersville University’s Integrated Studies program for students with intellectual disabilities.

ARTS SMARTS CAMPS Arts Smarts camps had 353 enrollments in summer 2016, with 139 full scholarships and 15 partial scholarships made possible by Rick and Jessy Rodgers. The recipients included children of refugee families from Somalia, Thailand, and Syria; also campers with Autism, Select Mutism, and medical issues; and those from Vantage House (an alcoholism treatment facility), and

having incarcerated parents, as well as low-income households.

The just completed 2017 summer saw the fourth straight year of increased enrollment with a record 380 camp spots filled, as we near full capacity. Again Rodgers & Associates generously provided scholarship funds.

families including those residing in shelter situations, who have children living with blindness, profound hearing loss, autism, and other conditions, as well as new refugees. These latter included two families from Syria, another from the Democratic Republic of Congo (only in the U.S. a week or so when their three sons joined us), and others from Latin America, many connected to the Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program.

ONE OF ITS REPRESENTATIVES WROTE:

“This program has provided the base for many years of education to come.

For that I thank all the collaborators of this wonderful program.

All children should have this excellent educational and cultural program opportunity.”

Further scholarship funds were donated at the end of this summer’s camp by kind parents of Arts Smarts campers and the Lititz Mennonite Church which sponsored one of our refugee family of campers.

While children and youth with disabilities take part in these and other inclusive artslearning opportunities, we also offered patrons with disabilities other means of access to the arts.

INCLUSIVE ARTS We began this year by offering a free Deaf and Disability Culture Sensitivity Best Practices Workshop which was attended by 40 participants from a number of local cultural institutions and several colleges.

A few MU students were also trained in open-captioning at this time.

In November, the Ware Center co-hosted an event with Benchmark Construction, giving free space to a number of local disability organizations to set up their giving stations for the 2016 Extraordinary Give.

Representatives from a number of these agencies – and many more – serve on our Disability Arts Advisory Council.

Throughout the 2016-17 year, access services were made available for select performances: ASL interpretation and audiodescription for Wiesenthal; open captioning and audio-description for Spring Awakening; ASL was also featured at a presentation by local deaf poet Meg Day, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, the 2017-2018 Season Preview event, and Everybody’s Hero: The Jackie Robinson Story.

Audio-description was offered for Taikoza, and during a drum performance, two young audience members with intellectual disabilities were welcomed onto the stage to join the company in playing the ensemble’s instruments during one of its numbers.

For the first time ever, audio-description was provided for films. In the case of Love Thy Nature, one of our On Screen/ In Person (OSIP) movies, this was done at the behest of a blind patron. The OSIP film States of Grace told the story of a woman learning to live with disability, and featured audio-description, captioning, as well as ASL interpretation during its screening.

We also provided two sensory friendly Family Fun Fest performances for children living on the autism spectrum – David Gonzalez’s Sleeping Beauty and the concert of Grammywinning singer/songwriter Danny Weinkauf

and his Red Pants Band. This was Danny’s first experience with sensory-friendly performance and he became an instant advocate! Sensory-friendly performances provide accommodations in production, a Social Story to familiarize the children with both our venue and the artist ahead of the performance, pre-show tactile activities implemented in partnership with the Tommy Foundation, and a “chill-out” room if any of the children need to leave the auditorium, along with a lobby TV monitor so they can continue to enjoy the performance as it is televised live in a less crowded space.

One family wrote this about the experience with Danny Weinkauf’s performance:

“Thank you and your team for providing this fun and sensitive show for our family to attend. [Our youngest son] who has some special needs, has been very enthusiastic about the show! He sat attentively for half of the show, and then asked if he could go down front to the stage with other children to watch Danny! … We are thankful that our children are able to participate in these types of learning and enriching entertainment!”

The following students offered their unique perspectives on working at the Ware Center.

RENEE DR AWBAUGH

BUSINESS OFFICE ASSISTANT, CLASS OF 2018 Working at the Ware Center has given me a perspective on the budgeting/finance side of a business. I perform tasks such as analyzing and projecting future data, creating rental agreements, sending invoices, and creating budget reports.

These, and more, are directly related to my major and assist me in determining what I want to do with my future career.

My work at the Ware Center takes me downtown, and I absolutely love being in the city and enjoy seeing the beauty and art displayed.

The Ware Center itself is incredible, and I find myself frequently roaming the building to browse the art and the architecture.

One of the main reasons I love working here is the autonomous responsibility I’m given. My supervisor allows me to work on my own and play around with ideas. I can confide in him and request his opinion, but generally he trusts me with deciding what to do in the end.

The arts play an important role in my life. I have always been into singing, dancing, and acting. In high school, I performed in school shows and always imagined I would become an actress, and make boatloads of money. However, I chose a more realistic career. The arts are a permanent part of my past and will continue to make an impact in my future.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER, CLASS OF 2018 | INVENTOR OF THE "ARTCADE” Working at the Ware Center has shown me the value of good communication and relationship building. Going into the graphic design field will require well-honed interpersonal skills which can’t always be cultivated in the classroom.

My favorite aspect of working at the Ware Center is the people and peers I engage with. My work environment is bustling with positive attitudes thanks to my coworkers.

I really enjoyed being a part of the preview party for this year’s upcoming season. Working on a variety of promotional materials beforehand and then getting to see them on display is always satisfying, as well as immersing myself in the excitement of the crowd. That sense of enthusiasm for a new season of events is very captivating.

To me, the arts are the well-worn hooded sweatshirt of my life. I am comfortable in them, I unabashedly wear them out in public, and I will never let them go.

REVENUE GR ANT SUPPORT: Grants totaled $111,366, which was a significant increase over FY16 total grants. The increase was due to the receipt of a significant grant earmarked for administering an artist-in-residence program for the South Central Region of the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts.

DONATIONS AND SPONSORSHIPS: Nearly 80 patrons contributed $114,664 to the Arts at Millersville.

Additionally, the Office of Visual & Performing Arts contributed nearly $200,000 in waived or discounted rental fees for events by not-for-profit organizations, educational entities, and state/county/Lancaster City municipal agencies.

MILLI: Millersville’s Life-Long Learning Institute generated $16,646, an 89% increase over FY16 revenues.

COMMUNIT Y SUPPORT The Arts at Millersville once again provided approximately 25 ticket vouchers to assist in their community not-for-profits’ fundraising efforts.

Each voucher carried a non-cash value up to $50, resulting in approximately $1,250 in overall support.

TICKET SALES: Ticket sales for the Office of Visual & Performing Arts totaled $152,506 after discounts and box office costs were deducted. This total does not include any income generated from Theatre and Music Department events, Cultural Affairs, or outside entities that held their events at the Ware or Winter Centers.

Box office fees totaled $16,814, and our hospitality, backline and travel expenses totaled approximately $10,289.

Artistic programming expenses totaled just over $255,051 for the year. Artist fees, including local artists, totaled $206,483.

In addition, almost $21,465 was spent on MiLLI and Arts Camps instructors.

The staff supported 612 meetings, performances, and events between the Ware and Winter Centers, a multitude of which were open to the public.

Approximately 76,500 people came through the doors of the performing arts venues. Of this total attendance figure, about 10,392 tickets were sold by the Arts at Millersville. Additionally, 3,101 senior tickets were sold (an increase of 597 tickets from FY 16) and 1,094 student tickets were issued. Approximately 1001 tickets were distributed to MU faculty, staff, retirees, and students using their MU ID. 860 free tickets were provided to MU students for performances chosen by professors to enhance curriculums. 1,482 free tickets were provided to other schools and community groups.
