WELCOME TO THE SHOW Hello! Our 2022 season is a great mix of old and new.

Jersey Boys and Kinky Boots are shows we’ve never produced while 42nd Street, The Wizard of Oz, and The Drowsy Chaperone are always MTW favorites!

We have new and returning members of artistic teams bringing both fresh perspectives and history to these terrific stories. In both leading roles and our resident ensemble, we have actors who have never appeared on an MTWichita stage working alongside some of our favorite veterans. This year we are inside and outside, inhabiting both the Capitol Federal Amphitheater – a 2021 discovery – and Century II’s Concert Hall. We celebrated our first 50 years last year and while we continue to honor the past, we excitedly look forward to bringing our audiences a future full of brilliant storytelling. From the actors on stage to the stellar group of individuals backstage pulling all the levers, sewing all the sequins, focusing all the lights and producing all the sound, as well as our incredible office staff, we say: thank you for being here and welcome back!

We've spent a lot of time thinking about thinks we never before contemplated: the distinctions between types of COVID tests, HVAC, logistics enough to make a person's head spin. And so the sheer joy in thinking about patrons, your experience, ticket sales! Actors and technicians and designers, oh my! While we still have a list of protocols to enforce and extra tasks behind-the-scenes, there is enough "normal" mixed in to make us ready to celebrate this year. And celebrate we will, including the remarkable tenure of the one and only Wayne Bryan, the privilege of gathering together, and the opportunities the coming years will bring. Enjoy the show!

WELCOME FROM THE BOARD Welcome to Music Theatre Wichita’s 51st season!

On behalf of the Board and MTWichita staff, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our patrons for your tremendous support during the past few years. The marvelous response to our unconventional 50th anniversary season showed not only your generosity and loyalty, but the Wichita community’s passionate commitment to the arts.

MTWichita, predominately under the direction of Wayne Bryan, created a national legacy of presenting superior Broadway-style musicals and training the theatre stars of the future. MTWichita is now an icon of Wichita culture and known throughout the theatre world. This year we celebrate those amazing accomplishments.

But keep an eye out for what the future holds! Through your abundant support, MTWichita has strengthened its foundations, ensuring we are able to continue to bring you the highest-caliber Broadway theatre for generations to come.

In addition, MTWichita, folding Music Theatre for Young People under its wing, has expanded its youth theatre and education programs to share these enchanting experiences with children of all ages and backgrounds.

Liza has performed in 13 MTW productions and some of her favorites include A Chorus Line (Kristine), Chicago (Hunyak), and Pippin (Player). GABBE MELOCCARO (Francine/Ensemble) is elated to be back at MTWichita after spending her youth performing here. She graduated from WSU with a BFA in musical theatre and dance minor. BRAY WILKINS (Gyp DeCarlo/Ensemble) has had the pleasure of performing professionally in both musical theater and operatic repertory across the country. But his greatest accomplishments are being the father of two wonderful children, and somehow convincing his beautiful wife to marry him.

Stone has worked regionally with The Lexington Theatre Company in their productions of Newsies and Sondheim on Sondheim. MOLLY TULLY (Female Swing/Intimacy Director) is an active member of the Wichita theatre community. Favorite roles: Yitzhak (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) at Roxy’s and Audrey (Little Shop) at Forum. SHOW CREATORS MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book). Films (author or co-author): Sleeper,

Television: “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” (head writer), “The Dick Cavett Show” (head writer/co-producer). He has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America's Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre, won four Tonys including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second Broadway venture (with co-author Rick Elice), is currently playing on national and international tours. He lives in New York City and hopes to die in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones and their attorneys.

RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007

Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with Marshall Brickman.

His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick) and won five, more than any play of the season. It played in New York and on tour across North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa).

In 2014, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego presented the world premiere of his musical Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Super Fly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Jones. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theatre makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.

SHOW CREATORS BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15,

for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of the Four Seasons and the band's principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don't Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes ("Silence is Golden"), the Walker Brothers ("The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore") and Lauryn Hill ("Can't Take My Eyes Off You"). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for the Four Seasons and one of Billboard's longest-charted singles (54 weeks), "Oh, What a Night." A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. ln 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as "a quintessential music-maker." To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership ... on a handshake.

BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe,

“gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn't yet been invented.

In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon's “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don't Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” - all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You,” which eventually became the century's fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesly Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film, “Barbarella.” Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July '75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June '01).

He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing from Pennsylvania State University, where he also taught graduate and undergraduate directing, musical theatre performance, and musical theatre history.

JOSEPH D. SIBLEY (Costume Coordinator) he/him is excited to be returning to MTWichita. AMANDA BOWMAN (Company Manager) started her career with MTWichita as an apprentice in 2005 and has had numerous titles since then. She joined the Music Theatre Wichita team full-time as development & marketing coordinator in 2019, and began her current role in 2022. Amanda is a Wichita native and Wichita State alum. JONATHAN LANE (Scene Shop Supervisor) is in his 3rd

summer with MTW. He has just finished his master's degree in teaching and hopes to begin his teaching adventure this fall!

MICHAEL COLE (Lighting Director) is a Lighting Designer from New York City. For over 10 years he has worked internationally on dance, opera, musical theatre, corporate events and more. His credits include productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, international tours, and regional theatre across the USA. ERIN MITTMAN (Assistant Stage Manager) has worked with MTWichita on the Stage Management team since 2018, and with Music Theatre for Young People since 2019. She was a vital part of the production team for MTWichita’s first youth production in 2022, Frozen Jr. She recently served as a Production Assistant on the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof. While not working in theatre, she enjoys travelling and hiking.

MEET THE ARTISTIC STAFF MARY SUE DYMAK (Rentals Director/Drop Fabricator/Archivist/etc.): WOW! 2022 marks 28 seasons! Who would have thought that back in 1976, a summer job would turn into such a career! This will make stage productions numbering up to 240. My life remains happily engaged in large and complex tasks, including running MTW’s rentals business and oversight of two warehouse facilities. Thanks and love to WB...I offer my deepest love and respect to all who work in this fabulous building and for our organization. Bon chance!

BRIAN J. MARCUM (Artistic Director) is honored to lead MTWichita alongside Managing Director Angela Cassette. Originally from Tennessee, Brian spent his early years tap dancing, singing in the church choir, and performing whenever he could. After graduating from Oklahoma City University with a degree in dance performance, Brian spent two summers as an MTW resident ensemble member learning from the master himself, Wayne Bryan. With that arsenal of knowledge under his belt, Brian was able to make a life for himself as a working actor in New York City. Brian was in the original Broadway companies of The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, Saturday Night Fever, the 2001 TONY winning revival of 42nd Street and The Boy from Oz starring Hugh Jackman. Brian also appeared on Broadway as a replacement in The Drowsy Chaperone and Spamalot. Brian, along with his wife Jennifer, toured the country with State Fair and Annie Get Your Gun. Brian was the Associate Choreographer of Elf-The Musical on Broadway. He has been seen on television on the TONY awards (twice) and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (thrice). After Broadway, Brian turned his attention to education and became an Associate Professor of Dance in the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment at Oklahoma City University (his alma mater) for 7 years and an Assistant Professor of Musical Theater at Syracuse University for 4 years. In 2015 during his time at OCU he was invited back to MTW to choreograph Hello, Dolly! and every season since he has been back. In 2020, Brian wrote, directed and choreographed MTW’s Holiday Spectacular for the local PBS station, KPTS, and was nominated for an EMMY. He is ecstatic to be in this new role of artistic director. Honoring what was came before him, Brian is immensely grateful to be able to share his love, excitement and knowledge with MTW audiences. Brian and Jennifer and their children Sophie and Felix love calling Wichita home!

Throughout Broadway’s history, musical productions have often featured songs that were already known and popular. The so-called “jukebox musical” is nothing new. Even the groundbreaking Show Boat, with its original score created by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, incorporated a few songs from earlier eras to evoke nostalgic feelings.

For a while after Oklahoma! opened in 1943, shows with completely new scores tended to dominate the scene. But in the late 1950s and 1960s, teenagers started driving record sales, with rock’n’roll songs replacing show tunes on the music charts. Broadway producers began a long struggle to create new types of musicals which could bring audiences of all ages back to the theatre.

In 2001, shortly after the attack on the World Trade Center, a jukebox musical called Mamma Mia! opened, mixing the hit tunes of pop group ABBA into a newly created comedic plot, bringing upbeat energy and sold-out houses back to Broadway.

Many other pop-music concoctions quickly appeared, sometimes inserting old songs into new stories, and sometimes offering a biographical approach, with highly fictionalized portraits of various songwriters and singers. Most of these shows failed to find their audiences.

The idea of telling the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons began in the early 2000s, with band member and songwriter Bob Gaudio hiring writers Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman to dramatize the band’s colorful history. Directing the show would be Des McAnuff, artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse, near San Diego.

Despite the band’s enormous popularity in the 1960s and 70s, very little was known about the band members’ personal lives. One reason for this turned out to be that several of the boys had served prison terms, a revelation which likely would have limited the airtime their records could receive in such a “clean-cut” era.

Beginning their research, Brickman and Elice personally interviewed the surviving band members, Bob Gaudio, Frankie Valli, and Tommy DeVito, each of whom shared his own personal recollections. DeVito was the last to speak, and began by saying, “Don’t listen to those guys. I’ll tell you what really happened.”

Elice says this was the “Eureka moment,” inspiring the authors to structure the show in four “seasons,” having each band member narrate one segment of the story through his own subjective lens, with the contradictions between the men’s differing viewpoints creating tension, humor, and a tougher, more truthful texture than biographical musicals traditionally allow.

The La Jolla Playhouse premiered the show for three months in the fall of 2004, to enthusiastic reviews and great business. After one major cast change (John Lloyd Young replaced David Norona as Frankie Valli), the show headed toward Broadway.

After 38 previews, Jersey Boys opened to rapturous reviews on November 6, 2005, and closed twelve years later in 2017, after 4,642 performances. It won four Tony Awards (including Best Musical), the Grammy Award for Best Show Album, and the Olivier Award as Best Musical for the London production.

Long-running tours and International productions turned the show into a worldwide phenomenon.

After the Broadway closing, Jersey Boys reopened on November 22, 2017, in a slightly smaller production off-Broadway at New World Stages. Despite a lengthy COVID-caused hiatus, it managed to play over 1,000 additional performances before closing on May 22, 2022.

An unfortunate 2014 motion picture adaptation, directed by Clint Eastwood, managed to drain most of the joy from the story and the music. However, a professionally recorded video of the stage show is due for release this year, featuring Nick Jonas as Frankie Valli, Andy Karl as Tommy DeVito, CJ Pawlikowski as Bob Gaudio, and MTWichita alum Matt Bogart as Nick Massi.

MTWichita is very proud to begin our 2022 season with its first-ever production of this modern classic, uniquely combining a deeply insightful story with a treasure trove of popular music which has proven to be timeless.
