Study Says a Very Low-calorie Diet May Help Address Type 2 Diabetes

The Three Reversal Mechanisms Dr. Perry andcolleagues restrictedthe calories in the diets of rats that displayed all theType 2 diabetes traits in humans – non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and obesity. The rats were subjected to this kind of diet that contained a quarter of the normal calorie intake for 3 days. During these three days, the team used novel techniques which they developed to examine a series of metabolism changes that causes the liver to produce more glucose. Using this method the researchers found the three mechanisms by which VLCD drastically lowered blood sugar in the rodents.

The diet decreased the rate at which lactate and amino acids were turned into glucose.

It decreased the rate at which hepatic glycogen was turned into glucose.

It decreased the liver’s fat content which in turn made the liver more sensitive to insulin

The significance of the study is that the researchers were able to show the effect of a VLCD to lower plasma glucose concentrations in a weight-independent manner. These three mechanisms may all be potential therapeutic targets to lower plasma glucose in people with Type 2 diabetes. The researchers’ next step will be to determine whether

any or all of the three components of VLCD-induced reductions in hepatic glucose production they identified in rats will translate to humans. If this is confirmed, Dr. Perry says, researchers will have to identify specific molecular targets against any or all of the three pathways that they show work together to produce hyperglycemia in (Type 2 diabetes) rats.
