Contemporary Vernacular

The goal of this project was to reinvigorate a coastal community with architecture that speaks to an underrepresented construction: that of vernacular wood. Before Art Deco and the modernism that defines Miami Beach, the Seminole tribes built 'chickees' -- timber and thatch structures elevated off the ground. In the contemporary period, Alfred Browning Parker constructed wood architecture using passive louver ventilation systems. It is these two precedents that the project centers itself around and attempts to become a 21st century vernacular example.

Recreation / Regroup TOP: Urban athleticism takes shape through activating paved space as a skatepark. BOTTOM: Spaces beneath the elevated programs become hubs for community gathering: presentations, theatre, music events, and public forums. Second spaces become multipurpose programs. Rehearsal / Reimagine TOP: Sunbeams slip between the louvered walls and onto the double height gymnastic space, a place for youth and young adults to exercise in a vibrant space. BOTTOM: The cafe directs vision to the intricate stick & bones ceiling structure, directing thought to the cosmos.

RADIAL INTERACTIONS

The approach involves organizing the skatepark into three separate bowls, designed to accommodate various difficulty levels. A radial expansion from the center outward not only optimizes space but also allows skaters to progress organically from novice to advanced levels. The incorporation of orange-painted pavement as delineators for 'skate-safe' zones enhances the visual appeal of the park and also ensures a clear demarcation between different skill areas, promoting safety and order.

Pseudocrater Pseudo-building

The topography of Icelandic pseudocraters guides the architectural journey within the building, sculpting a dynamic experience that mirrors the undulating ascent and descent of the gentle slopes found in the natural craters. As users navigate through the space, the subtle rises and falls in elevation echo the geological contours, creating a harmonious fusion of design and nature, inviting a sensory exploration reminiscent of Iceland's unique landscape.

The exterior image of protruding warm spaces against the sloping hill integrates the building within the surrounding context.

The project seamlessly integrates with Icelandic beer culture by incorporating spaces inspired by Scandinavian design, fostering a social atmosphere where enthusiasts can gather, share experiences, and savor craft brews amidst the captivating backdrop of the country's natural beauty.

18 Bjóríhæðinni

Hill-Steppe-Seating

The stepped hill within the architectural design serves as a multifunctional program, providing a series of tiered platforms for visitors to sit and gaze at the breathtaking Icelandic views. These elevated spaces are purposefully designed as communal areas for dining and beer tastings, offering a unique

experience where patrons can savor local brews while immersed in the stunning scenery of Iceland. The stepped configuration not only maximizes the enjoyment of panoramic vistas but also fosters a sense of connection with the landscape, enhancing the overall ambiance of the dining and tasting experience.
