PLEASE OBSERVE THE MINUTES SILENCE FOR IAN WILSON -TUG

There is a tribute to in the first half of the programme to Ian (Tug)

Wow, where did that summer go! That is if you can call it a summer, I do not remember a wetter or more miserable one, so things can only get better!? On a massive plus side during the last three months there has been a variety of sports played with some significant success. Beginning with an achievement close to home, this was the well-earned final game at Twickenham for the Cumbria Women’s team, see Adrian’s article below. All the rugby finals, league and union, were very exciting with tremendous skills on display, particularly the wingers displaying a gymnastic level of ability. The football was exciting but perhaps not if you were an England fan. The test cricket, with Test Match Special traditionally being the background to

my summer has resulted in some excellent wins for England and a final farewell to one of the greatest sportsman this country has produced, James Anderson. Tennis has also been exciting and in the last few days Jack Draper has emerged from Andy Murray’s shadow. Somewhere in the mix was the Olympics, which I have always enjoyed, my emotional connection being strengthened since my time at the London games. This year made even more exciting with some sensationally close results! Now we are enjoying the Para Olympics, WOW what a feast of sport!

So, with that in mind we arrive today at the start of a new season and although in the same league we will be facing some new opponents and I certainly would welcome information on these clubs. A great opportunity for someone to write about these clubs and send it me for the programme?? However, today’s opposition

are very familiar to us having played them for a number of recent seasons in some exciting and often close games. Therefore, it is our pleasure to give Wirrala special warm Kendal rugby club welcome which we extend to the team, officials and visitors. I know you will enjoy our hospitality, but the competition on the field is going to be full on and hopefully despite the wet summer in fact wet year, conditions should permit a fast open game. It will be great to see some of the spectacular winger tries I refer to above, ideally for Kendal! So let us use home advantage and begin the season with a WIN- Good Luck Lads!

I believe and feel there is a positive buzz around the club and certainly as players have returned for the new season, there is a great blend of youth and experience in the strengthened senior men’s squad. This has helped a positive approach to training and preseason games have been productive, particularly Specific thanks

a good result against Wharfedale. Every season is a fresh start and I believe we have much to be positive about, so we can approach this game with clear heads avoiding penalties and support play that will excite even the most negative spectator.

At this point I want to thank the many people behind the scenes who have been ensuring the club is functioning well. This includes booking functions, preparing and served food, work on the grounds, putting on events, getting the admin done and signing up members, particularly players [making sense of the RFU site is not a simple task,] providing me with information and having constructive conversations to move the club forward. These achievements are down to many individuals working as part of a team, so well done to everyone all parts however small are vital. Part of this team is the appointment of Dan Stephens as director of rugby, from a personal point of view I believe this is a great choice.

I also observed with some

interest that the RFU is reviewing its finance structure with a view to giving clubs more money to clubs. I would like to think that will reach our level, he says while watching pigs fly! With sport generally, note comment above about this summer, having such a high profile the RFU must act to protect clubs at grassroots. Watch this space!

Within this programme I am pleased to note that you will see articles from both Dan Stephens and Dan Bowman. Additionally, the important tribute to Tug as above. I have also written a short piece about the programme and the changes for this season. I finally draw your attention to the update on the pitch.

Back to today, yes ...the weather forecast is right ….the sun is shining and we are watching an exciting open game of rugby, with many tries being scored by both teams!!

Enjoy the programme and most importantly today’s game.

Richard Sanderson ■

On the team page you will see YP against some players, this is to recognise they have come through our youth section.

Work related to the programme has continued in advance of the new season and it means a few changes, which you may or may not have noticed?

The layout has been changed slightly so we can accommodate different length articles more easily. That leads to the fact I intend to interview players for short profiles, something not done for a few years. This process will begin with an introductory interview with Dan Stephens. This format makes it easier to print YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS, so please send me articles e.g. memories of past games/ events, history of the game, grounds played on, clubs long gone, views on the game etc..

I also thank all my regular contributors of articles and photos, but stress the importance of the Monday deadline!! Finally sponsors for everything are welcome and we can make plenty of space in the programme for adverts of all sizes.

President’s Patter

Afternoon dear reader

A happy new season to you! Hope you’ve summered well? I’ll get onto my “summer”later on..... but just hope that you’ve done your best to keep dry, and stay inside. As per, the new season will bring the ruddy lesser spotted yellow object in the sky, and the weather we’ve all been craving for, err, all summer. Hey ho, we’ve been here before, and I’m sure that we’ll be here again, so no point moaning...... but as you all know, that will not stop me!

Before I whitter on too much, something very important, and something that I wish I wasn’t writing. As I’m sure it will be documented elsewhere, and better than I can, we lost a great club person, and quite frankly, club icon in Ian “Tug” Wilson the other week.

More than us, local sport in general have lost a great friend..... I’ve had a number of other club alikadoo contact to offer their condolences. I am now offering mine, and of course the club’s to his family for their loss. People like tug are completely irreplaceable, but the foundations of this club will always be great,

as he helped to lay them. RIP old friend.

Not too sure how to move on from that, probably as I don’t want to, but I shall. Pre-season, came and went. Some solid performances shown.

Away from the 1s the colts played a friendly on the artifical last Sunday, and looked really solid, again moving on from last season. Thoughts and best wishes to Connor who sadly got injured badly.

The colts are also playing here at home the morrow with a 2pm kick off (I think). If you fancy a local Derby watch, the Wasps are up at Carlisle....... but please do check the socials, as they are a far better indicator than my moronic tubby self!

Finally, my golf game remains as terrible as ever, but the truth is it doesn’t matter how much I play, I remain useless.

Bleeding hell, apologies, I’m a tad rusty, but a big welcome to our friends from the Wirral today, and all of their support. I spoke to president

Dave last week, and although I couldn’t wish for a better set to be Alikadooing to kick off proceedings.......I couldn’t think of a worse start for my liver/other internal organs. I really do hope everyone associated with the opposition enjoy their day with us, and have a very safe trip home!

The 2s are now off to Eccles in a reversal, after the league seemingly forgot that clubs seconds can play at home when their firsts aren’t there too!

Eagle, Preston and Sale have also been kind enough to swop the fixtures round to help out our/ their club plight. All the very best to everyone.

During the summer months I’ve been attempting to drum up the courage to approach my erstwhile sponsor of this gumph, to see if he actually would knowingly sponsor it

Ian “titan of accountants” Thompson replied to the

President’s Patter

question with “what are you on about you fat buffoon” minus some words ofttheism in my direction. I have taken this response as a positive one, so many thanks to him! As previously though dear reader, if we can please avoid mentioning anything to him (as everyone avoids admitting that they read this tripe!) much obliged, as I’m not very mobile these days (I heard that cheeky!) And getting away from his wrath could be a bridge too far. Thanks in advance!

Please also be warned that I am looking to “tap up” some other victims for sponsorship this season. More about that in the weeks to come, if I remember!

New season, but still the same importance given to mental health.

Although this is a return to something, and somewhere that we all love and enjoy, there will be people here that may not have socialised since the end of last season, or possibly have had a hard summer. I won’t dodge this, I have, but I’ve also had loads of support in which I’m very very lucky. I know that not everyone is as lucky, so can

we all please start as we mean to carry on and keep that eye and ear open for each other. I didn’t, as I’m always advocating, tell anyone..... it was literally by accident that the right person asked the right question, and then i started to open up a bit, so i do know how hard it can be. As ever, if you are struggling, or need a chat and don’t feel that you have anyone you can speak to, please do come and find me..... always around.

Nearly done (how very dare you?!). I just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for everything they put into the club to make it the wonderful place it is. Be it sponsors, players, coaches, volunteers and the spectators, thank you all for everything.

Lastly, I hope that you all have the safest of trips home, no matter where that may be.

You can all commerce the cheer/ sigh of relief.

Be well and be lucky Arth ■

Thanks Arthur, the season is here and friendships renewedRichard

R.I.P. Ian Wilson (Tug)

Last week our club lost one of our ever present characters Ian Wilson fondly known as Tug. Ian was a former player, coach, committee man, lifelong member and supporter.

He played his rugby from the mid 50s and through the 60s, playing over 50 first team games. After a short retirement, he dusted off his boots to successfully player manage the 3rd XV which contained a few other retired 1st teamers but importantly also introduced new young players into the club. This led to Ian coaching, alongside Matty Greenup, one of the newly introduced Colts Teams.

with Burneside CC, playing through the 50s, 60s and 70s before becoming an umpire. Once again he was a very active committee man and supporter at Ellergreen Park.

Ian is survived by his wife Pat, daughters Rachel and Joanne, son Paul and their families.

He became an active committee man and had a busy role helping his brother Roger with groundsman duties.

Throughout his life his other passion was cricket

Ian’s funeral will take place at Beetham Crematorium on Tuesday 10th September at 11am.

Works on the Main Pitch

At the end of last season, it was noticeable that the main grass pitch had developed extensive boggy areas between the halfway line and the river end. Previously the drainage had been excellent, but trial holes showed that water remained after rain and did not drain away as expected. We undertook an investigation of the drainage and this showed that the side sand slits that drain to the main underground drains were compressed and needed to be replaced. It is unfortunate that there is an impermeable band of slate under the pitch which starts at the dugouts and stretches roughly diagonally across the pitch towards the containers at the far end of the car park. This accounts for the water retention.

You will have seen our Crowdfunding Appeal to raise money needed to undertake the repairs, which was organised superbly by Claire Park. We are very grateful to all who have contributed and now have some £18k in

Thoughts from our head coach

Good afternoon to you all for the opening game of the season and with it the renewed excitement that we can look forward to seeing our senior men’s squad in action again against a very well-developed travelling side today. The off season has provided much needed recovery on the back of a solid year that saw the development of both a young playing squad and a muchimproved league position from the season before. The squad has a couple of exciting new additions however, as importantly we have overcome the first significant challenge of the season and that’s other clubs’ competition for our players, resulting in the playing group largely unchanged from last season.

We welcome Ben Dixon to the captaincy role supported by Matty Houghton as vice-captain, they will be immensely important in instilling discipline and

standard in the group as we move forward. Reece Thomlinson, who retired last season attempts the transition from playing to coaching (best of luck it’s tough for sure).

We have looked hard at the game plan in the off season and we will look to be more competitive on both sides of the ball this year. The preseason games have given us the opportunity to see this and as coaches we look forward to watching the squad develop personally and collectively as we face the challenges of what will be a very competitive league season.

I hope you enjoy the Rugby today and get behind the teams.

Our Director of Rugby Dan Stephens

Good afternoon everyone and a very warm welcome to Mint Bridge for our opening fixture of 2024-25 campaign. As always, a huge amount of unseen work has gone on at the club during the off season and I would like to personally thank all of our members, volunteers, players, coaches and supporters for all of your time and commitment that is given freely and enables the club to function.

We are fortunate to have added to the senior men’s playing squad over the summer with the addition of Ollie Rose (scrum half) who has joined us from Upper Eden following a two-year stint at Newcastle Gosforth Academy, and Aaron Sawu (prop) who joins us from the Border Bulldogs club, East London, South Africa. The club is delighted to announce that Devin Coyle (who joined us last season from the Ashburton Club in New Zealand) has agreed to extend his stay for a second season. The rest of the senior men’s playing squad and coaching team is pretty much as it was last season

which has allowed for continuity to be built on throughout preseason. One notable addition to the senior men’s coaching team is Reece Tomlinson who will assist with the 2XV team this season. Welcome on-board Reece and good luck.

I never read too much into preseason fixture results but suffice to say the three games that we have played have all been tough run outs and have allowed the players to get back into the physicality and mental side of match rugby which is difficult to replicate on the training pitches. The final fixture of the pre-season campaign which was played last Saturday saw us back at “The Avenue” competing against a strong Wharfedale outfit. Despite coming out on the wrong side of a 38-31 scoreline, the overall display from the Kendal squad was very encouraging and credit must go to the lads and coaching staff for the effort and commitment that they have put into pre-season. The fixture also saw the

reclaiming by Wharfedale of the coveted Peter Kremer Cup, which has been awarded to the victors of the fixture between the two clubs since 2014. I know that ‘Krem’ would have been proud of the club and the attitude of players that took to the field in this fixture.

I expect the season ahead to be highly competitive but as a playing group we are all up for the challenge, excited and eager for the season to get underway.

Enjoy your day.

The Women’s Section - WASPS

The Wasps Head Coach

Hello and welcome to the 2024/25 championship season.

As those of you who follow the Wasps will be aware following promotion we finished our first season in the championship in third place, only missing out on second by one point, I am sure you will agree that this was a great achievement by the team in their first season following the promotion. As our season ended, we had six of our players selected to play for the Cumbria County team in a very successful campaign

which saw them go all the way to the final at Twickenham where they faced off against a very experienced Devon side, sadly Cumbria did not win their first final but took a great deal away from the experience and will be aiming to return in the next county campaign and show there growth.

The new season has got off to a great start after a solid preseason you can be sure the players are in great shape to hit the ground running. We have

welcomed new players to the squad during that time who could not be put off by the broncos and relentless fitness training delivered by Marl our strength and conditioning coach. So, you can look forward to some Wasps debuts being made this season with some fresh faces joining the swarm.

As well as welcoming new players we would love to

The Women’s Section - WASPS cont.

welcome new sponsors and support for the team, joining the support provided by our current sponsors to ensure we can continue to provide the best possible training and equipment to our amazing players, if you think you could offer any support, please do approach the club to discuss this further.

As the new season starts, I am pleased to announce that Kate Birchall will be continuing in her role as captain with Sarah Wilkinson and Fleur Stanton as vice captains. These players will provide

the team with a wealth of experienced and leadership on the field to achieve the best possible outcomes on game days. With our first game of the season coming on the 22nd of September against Driffield and being at home. We hope to see a great crowd down to support the team as they set out on their campaign with hopes of improving on our previous season and challenging for the number one league position. In other news this season will see the Wasps playing 3 fixtures on Saturday as part of the RFU pilot scheme with our first seeing all three senior sides

playing on the same day against Birkenhead away on the 25th of October, we hope to see a strong crowd of support for Kendal as we join both men’s teams to take on Birkenhead, you can be sure to see plenty of quality rugby on show if you make the journey down.

I hope you enjoy the game today and thank you for your continued support for our amazing club.

Thanks, looking forward to another great seasonRichard

Kendal Youth Round Up

Kendal Senior Colts.

Welcome to the new season. One that we have all eagerly been waiting for. The summer weather has been a mixed bag. The boys have been quite glad of some of the cooler, damper nights when they have been in the middle of a tough pre season session. We can probably count the dry sessions on one hand!!

We had a couple of nights off after the conclusion of the season. We then opened up for some training sessions, handling work, touch etc to keep the boys turning over. Then we started back in earnest the first week of July. Daz has again led the boys through a tough but enjoyable pre season. All the boys working hard and getting the best out of every session. Pete, Daz, Jimmy, Craig and I keen to build on what we achieved last year, but keener to get the boys playing even better rugby. We all want to play open, fast rugby so we have been training as building for this. Numbers at the sessions have been varied. Lads now working, away at colleges, holidays, injuries etc. numbers have

been boosted with some lads joining from Kirkby Lonsdale. Zak, Theo, Liam, Isa, Lewis, Seth, Tommy, all bringing their qualities and adding to the squad.

We managed to get a game under our belts last weekend against Keighley Colts who made the club their home for the weekend. They camped on the small training pitch, ran some sessions, Keighley Olympics, quiz etc. Chris made them a hearty breakfast and we kicked off on the 3G at 1:00. After going a couple of scores down after a positive start, we then began to take control and ran out 56-19 winners, in front of a decent sized crowd. All support was much appreciated. Some great open play from both backs and forwards. Many great tries scored and hopefully just a glimpse of the rugby that can be played by the boys this season. We had 5 guys on debut who all received their club ties after the game.

So, to the league campaign which starts tomorrow at home V Wilmslow. We are in league B this year with Wilmslow, Leigh, Wigan,

Widnes, Caldy, Preston Grasshoppers, Sedgeley Park and Rochdale. Some great teams to come up against. We have been drawn away to Carlisle in the National under 18s cup, and have drawn the Ospreys in the 1st round of the Cumbria cup.

We had some good success last season and we are all keen to improve on that, and will be doing all we can to ensure it happens.

As always all support will be much appreciated. Hopefully see you all down tomorrow. Kendal Colts V Wilmslow Colts, 2pm kick off.

See you all soon

Auld Greys

Walking rugby

Walking Rugby -Too Tempting To Miss.

So that was summer. At time of writing, I have managed one dip in Gurnal Dubs and two or three of the Auld Greys’ sessions have been held in scorching sunshine but there have been far more days when I have forced myself to wear shorts and t-shirt because it is allegedly summer rather than because it’s been cracking the flags.

I look forward to the Saturday afternoons sheltering in the stand as the rain sweeps in horizontally and the Wednesday afternoon walking rugby sessions where I’m so wet that I can almost smell the hot Vimto or Bovril my mum used to have waiting for me when I was a kid and got home after sport. Then I remember I have just turned 61 and realise that like all top athletes I prefer a beer in the bath.

While the Olympians in Paris amazed us and the England football team at the Euros sent us to sleep, closer to home there have been seismic shifts behind the scenes at the Auld Greys.

Paul Want stood down after a very successful period at the head of the group and I stepped up to try to fill his shoes. I had hoped to fill my boots on a diet of freebies and sponsors’ backhanders but so far, my phone has stayed strangely silent.

We have played through the summer and seldom had less than twenty eight turn up on a Wednesday afternoon. I have been playing for about four years and the progress in levels of skill and accomplishment is staggering. Our ranks include many links with the wider club with ex-players like Stirling Hulme, Peter from the Coxon dynasty and Anne Dixon, grandmother of this season’s first XV captain Ben. Many of us

hadn’t touched a rugby ball since school and some had never played until they joined us. Recently, a newbie rocked up for a trial session and afterwards he was almost speechless at how much he had enjoyed himself. He said that he had come for some sport, a hint of competition, the chance to get his heart rate up and to meet a few new people. The last time he’d played rugby was decades ago, but he loved it! It is walking rugby, but the physical benefits cannot be overstated. It’s great to welcome new members.

Walking rugby isn’t confined to Kendal, and in August we welcomed a friend of the Auld Greys from Kingswood RFC

down near Bristol. Baz was en route to Scotland but popped in to play, referee and share his ideas of how we might develop further. Our festival in May attracted 80+ participants from all over the UK. The Kingswood festival attracted 34 teams and 440 players! We share a view that walking rugby should be fun and most importantly should always be safe and it was great to hear him say that he could tell that from his visit.

I am sure there are some of you reading this wondering whether walking rugby might be for you. All I can say is, ‘Give it a go.’ People who come once tend to come again and are soon regulars and many of them will be in the ground today. We come from all walks of life but what we share is a welcoming attitude, a sense of fun and an understanding and appreciation of the benefits of sport, teamwork and socialising. If you’re over 55, at Walking Rugby is the place to be at 2pm on a Wednesday.

Welcome Back

It seems a long time –probably as it has been. I did reduce the break slightly by going to see Cumbria play at Carlisle at the end of last season. If I had known how many of our team were involved, I would have been here for the game a week earlier. The next day I watch the Cumbrian Women, with a far smaller contingent of Wasps, but still an excellent performance. This persuaded me (it didn’t take much) to make the trip to Kirkby Stephen for their second game, where they blew the opposition away. I am always moaning about poor support play, however this saw a team put together from a number of clubs, so players not used to playing together, but most of the early tries came as someone was there for the scoring pass, after their team mate did all the hard work. The team then won away in the South East to set up a trip to Twickenham. I

watched that online, sadly no happy ending, as they were well beaten by a strong Devon team. However, the Wasps involved all played well, and prolific try scorer Hayley Hodgson can now say something few can, that she has scored a try at Twickenham.

After no warm up games last season, we got some August action with a good following going to Kirkby Lonsdale (a number on the 567 bus from Kendal), where last season’s Man of the Season, new vice captain Matt Houghton, started where he left off, head and shoulders (plus a few other body parts) the best player. A week later at Aspatria, it was those at the other and of the experience and age range who stood out, with new recruit scrum half Ollie Rose having a second good game, whilst Barney Coxon played well scoring three tries. Last weekend the team stepped up a level,

Mark Hodgkiss

Welcome Back cont.

both in terms of opposition and performance to match Wharfdale for much of the game.

Changes to the League composition at the end of last season did not go in my favour, losing Macclesfield and Northwich, which have train stations, rather than Rossendale and Leek who don’t. They are joined by Stoke (who play at Stone, several miles away) and Newport (Shropshire not Wales), both not in the easiest to access locations. So, I may be calling on others (if they make the long trek South) for match details, although as ever I will hopefully find a route. The other new team is on the rail network, but Birkenhead Park do seem to have been a bit of a bogie side for us, with a number of dreadful performances there gifting them wins – hopefully something the team will reverse this season.

The team face a tough start to the season, against those who finished fourth, second and third last season. So, if they come out of it with

maximum points, they will be tipped as promotion candidates, but if they get nothing, no need to panic just yet

For those who don’t follow the First XV away, the bad news is on most weekends this season when the First XV are away, so are the Seconds, so no rugby at Mint Bridge.

Returning to the start

I think many from the Cumbria team “may” be in action tomorrow with the Wasps playing Carlisle (venue unknown) possibly in the Cup Final which did not seem to take place last season – Hopefully more details on the website by the time you read this.

Piece one of the season written (as if I had never been away). I already have a “spare” written for a fortnight’s time, if inspiration for something else does not hit me by then (if it does that will be kept for another day).

As ever a plea for contributions from you. Have you something you want to share with the

World (or that part which spends its weekend at Mint Bridge). Richard (the man with the difficult job of compiling this programme) contact details can be found at the front of the programme.
