publisher’s greeting

Wow, it finally got warm. Summer actually feels like it arrived and I am enjoying the warmth and late start to the mountain hiking season. At 10,000ft, it takes a little longer for the leaves, flowers, and grass to get going. The canopy of green is popping up high, along with a profusion of wildflowers and mosquitos...note that little sucker on my leg. Sitting was not an option except for a quick photo. So here we are putting out the Summer/Fall issue of Mountain Town Magazine, and we are excited to tell you about all of the great music playing up high and down low. There is not much of a mud season anymore, and events abound into the winter. We open the magazine with our story on Frisco. I love this little town. It packs a big punch of fun along with delicious dining options. It is my go-to each morning for paddleboarding, an afternoon ride, and a coffee or cocktail. I love the challenge of powering up Mount Royal and relaxing later at one of the towns incredible restaurants. The town’s shopping options are unique too. We have some trip ideas within the pages of the magazine. These great stories will make you want to pack your bags and head out with a map and intel on the Historic Colorado Hot Springs Loop. Did you know we have a Colorado Spirits Trail? We highlighted our mountain town distilleries in this article, and you might want to check the ones that sit along the Hot Springs trail. This is an indulgent way to get to know our mountain towns and take time for yourself. Like to fish? Want to live in a mountain town? Check out the Real Estate section; we have some properties that might interest you. Many are chock full of additional area amenities to get you outside. Oh! We have a new department, Pets. If you live in a mountain town, then most likely you have a pet. My pup goes everywhere with me, and we want to make sure all of our fur babies are well taken care of. Check it out on page 24. The Pet page will be a permanent part of our magazine. As always we have some great suggestions on where to eat so read, enjoy and get out, it’s time for summer and then the glorious return of fall; the reason we stayed! Cheers! ~ Holly Battista-Resignolo, Publisher

SMALL BUT

MIGHTY I love the town of Frisco, it’s small but packs a big punch of fun and activities. The amount of opportunity to eat recreate, dance, and shop are remarkable for an area so small. The question is where to begin? How about a little history from the proprietors of the Frisco Lodge... “The town of Frisco, Colorado was founded by Henry Recen in 1873. Henry was a Swedish trapper and miner that built a small cabin on the mountainside. Recen and a handful of miners developed the land and eventually built a railroad that connected the small mountain towns for transportation and goods. Just like any town, Frisco was built with a reason in mind. In this particular situation, Frisco Colorado was created mostly due to the mining boom found in the area. Frisco wasn’t named after San Francisco, even if it does have a similar name. In fact, the name Frisco is derived from the letters associated with the St. Louis- San Francisco Railway company. You have the FR from Francisco, IS from St Louis and CO from Company! In the beginning, the permanent population was only 250 people, as well as multiple hotels, saloons, businesses, and railroads.’ You can learn even more by visiting the town’s Historic Park & Museum. Collections of artifacts and structures that interpret Frisco’s past and its people are displayed at the museum. This cultural center holds regular lectures, guided hikes, tours and other events designed to bring the town’s past to life. Since the towns founding the community has grown and today Main Street is the bright jewel and base camp of the town. Loaded with unique shops and world-class dining you will find relaxing coffee shops, breakfast joints as well as fine dining, an award-winning brewery and a fabulous new music hall. You won’t have to go far and find what

your appetite is looking for. Looking for a quick coffee bagel or burrito try Abby’s or the Frisco Coffee Roaster. If fine dining is your destination then head to Vinny’s, Silverheel’s or The Uptown. Lakeside dining? Yes, direct yourself to the Marina for cocktails and lunch of dinner at the Island Grill. A must stop is Foote’s Rest for ice cream and barbecue. There’s even a fabulous Cajun spot right there on Main Street. Sit down for breakfast, head to the Log Cabin Cafe, Butterhorn Bakery or Salt. Your taste buds won’t be disappointed and you will want to load up because if you’re spending the day in Frisco you’re going to be burning some calories.

on Main’s rooftop deck is a great place for a group to gather or for a romantic rendezvous. Check out the saloon at Frisco Prime. Their classic turn of the century bar serves up great modern-day cocktails and delicious food.

It is always Happy Hour in Frisco but if you’re looking for some cheers then you are in the right spot. Highside Brewing is always brewing up great beer and offers a delicious menu. Try Prost, Colorado’s only Beer Hall, their giant pretzels are great. The Uptown

Frisco is a lakeside town. Some tremendous upgrades have taken place this past year to their marina. A new boat ramp makes it darn easy to get your boat in and out. Don’t own a boat? Well, there are plenty to rent from.Pontoons, Sailboats and

S U MME R /FA L L 2019 | mo unta intow nm a ga z ine.com

Copper Mountain is Frisco’s ski area, just hop on the highway or grab the Summit Stage, Summit County’s free bus service. Each weekend you’ll find a unique festival to attend and they have fantastic dining and trail access too. A chair lift ride we’ll make it a memorable day and if it is winter well then, the skiing and riding are exceptional.

Power Boats, the marina rents them. I personally love to paddleboard and the access at the new beach is fantastic. How fun to have a Sandy Beach where you can dip your toes and cool off in the waters of Lake Dillon. The Marina has stand-up paddleboards available for rent as well as kayaks and canoes. Maybe you would like to try finessing a rowboat. The Frisco Rowing Center can set you up and provides instruction. Bring the sunscreen and your beach towels along with a picnic that can be picked up at Deli Belly on Main Street. Have teenagers? Then head over to the Frisco Adventure Park where a free, newly refurbished skatepark with fresh smooth concrete is waiting to challenge them. While they’re off skating there are tons of trails to hike or bike and if disc golf is your thing then you’re in luck, there’s an awesome Disc Course to challenge you. Have little ones? Well, there are tons of parks and playgrounds to play in with great features for all of you to enjoy. My favorite is Walter Byron Park with its open, grassy field and a great little playground. Biking opportunities abound. The Summit County bike path leads in every direction from Frisco. You can access the Peaks Trail and enjoy single track all the way to Breckenridge or you can have a wonderful ride around the Peninsula at the Frisco Adventure Park. Check out the pump track for kids biking as well as the Dirt Jump Park facility. It might not be your thing but it is so fun to watch area bikers take on the challenge of the course.

There are beautiful hiking opportunities with trailheads in each corner of the town. Go do a power hike up Mount Royal or take it further up to the top of Peak 1. Grab the kids and head to Rainbow Lake. Meadow Creek is beautiful and you can even climb up to the Old Dillon Reservoir. The Peninsula Trail at the Frisco Adventure Park offers panoramic views any time of the day. In the winter the Frisco Adventure Park transforms into a Nordic ski area with Snow Tubing and a beginner ski and snowboarding terrain area. Races and special events mark the calendar when the snow is flying. Whatever the season you may want to plan to stay a day or two. There is a multitude of lodging opportunities from bed and breakfast’s, hotels, Airbnb’s and vacation rentals. Try the Galena Street Inn, Frisco Lodge, Hotel Frisco or the new Grand Hotel. Each location offers its own unique ambiance and amenities. That’s a lot of intel. Even if you’re not staying the night, Frisco is the perfect stopover when traffic is heavy on I-70. The Whole Food’s shopping area has great restaurants as well as Outer Range Brewing Co. and you can find most of what you need along Summit Boulevard. Come enjoy the adventure of this little town. Your Transportation Plan

CDOT asks for input from Coloradans to create a statewide transportation plan of projects based on data-driven assessment, public and stakeholder input The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) was joined by Lt. Governor, Dianne Primavera and transportation planners from across the state to start a transportation conversation with all Coloradans to create a new 10-year plan of priority transportation projects. Over the next several months, residents can join in this effort using a new tool at YourTransportationPlan.com to provide input on transportation trends and issues that impact them the most, identify specific needs using an interactive map, and give feedback on CDOT’s transportation vision and goals. Additionally, CDOT will hold public meetings across all 64 counties, host telephone town halls, and attend community events to get feedback from across the state on your transportation system and future needs. “Transportation affects each of us every day and that is why CDOT is kicking off a statewide transportation conversation to address Colorado’s transportation needs together,” said Lt. Governor, Dianne Primavera. “Our population is growing, traffic is getting worse and we face the challenge of taking care of the system we have, while also planning for the future. We invite

you to join this transportation conversation by visiting YourTransportationPlan.com to give feedback or participant in a telephone town hall or meeting.” Colorado is the country’s eighth fastest growing state, and as more vehicles travel the roads there is more wear and tear on infrastructure. CDOT is adopting a new approach to plan for transportation investments to ensure that projects improve safety, provide multimodal travel options and efficiently get people and goods where they need to go. “At CDOT, we’re changing how we plan for transportation now and in the future,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Instead of starting with the question of how we pay for it, we want to start with the question of ‘What should we be paying for and why?’ Coloradans are in this together - and this conversation will allow us to hear from the people that use our roads, sidewalks, bike lanes and transit options about their needs.” Coloradans can provide their input by using the online engagement tool, find out about upcoming telephone town halls to participate from the comfort of home, or find out when and where an in-person public meeting will be held. www.YourTransportationPlan.com

PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM WILDFIRE Every year we all need to be concerned about wildfire and our homes. Here Are Some Tips To Protect Your Home From Wildfire: •

Actively manage your roof. Clean roof and gutters of pine needles and leaves at least twice a year to eliminate an ignition source for potential fires. This eliminates an ignition source for firebrands, especially during hot, dry weather.

• Stack firewood away from your house. Locate firewood at least 15 feet uphill from your home. Do not stack firewood under the deck. • Remove unhealthy vegetation. Trees and shrubs that are stressed, diseased, dead or dying should be removed so that they do not become a fuel source for potential fires. 18

S U MME R /FA L L 2019 | mo unta intow nm a ga z ine.com

• •

Create defensible space on flat ground a minimum of 75 feet around a home. Increase this diameter if the structure is located on a slope. Thin out continuous tree and brush (shrub) cover around structures. Remove flammable vegetation from within the initial 15 feet around structures. Beyond the initial 15 feet, thin trees to achieve 10-12 foot crown spacing. Occasionally, clumps of two or three trees are acceptable for a more natural appearance, if additional space surrounds them. Mow grasses and weeds to a height of six inches or less for a distance of 30 feet from all structures. Prune tree branches within the defensible space up to a height of 10 feet above ground.

Dispose of all slash and debris left from thinning by either chipping, hauling away or piling and burning if allowed. Contact your local fire department or local Colorado State Forest Service forester for burning restrictions and/or assistance.

Remove shrubs and small trees or other potential ladder fuels from beneath large trees. Left in place, these fuels can carry a ground fire into tree crowns.

Trim any branches extending over roofs, and remove branches within 15 feet of chimneys.

Place liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) containers at least 30 feet from structures. Clear anything flammable, including vegetation, from within 10 feet of all tanks.

HISTORY COMING TO LIFE IN GLENWOOD There is more to the 126-year-old Hotel Colorado than meets the eye. The history of the hotel is filled with stories that defy a natural explanation. In fact, there are rumors that some past guests are said to still roam the hallways along with some other colorful characters. Now guests, visitors and locals alike can experience the spirited characters for themselves with the Hotel Colorado’s new Walk Back in Time Historic Tours. The Hotel Colorado is now offering the guided tours by the “ghosts” of colorful characters from Glenwood Springs’ past in partnership with The Glenwood Springs Historical Society and Frontier Museum. Each character portrayalist will share unique and haunting stories of The Hotel Colorado’s history during a one-hour tour. The tour guide characters include the Town Marshall of New Castle Jasper Ward, visionary Walter Devereux who built the hotel, frontierswoman Eleanora Malaby, who bravely traveled by horse over Independence Pass, and more. The portrayalists will share unique and spirited stories of the Hotel Colorado’s history – some of which are first-hand accounts by previous guests and staff members. The one-hour Historic Tour begins in The Hotel Colorado lobby and is offered on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday at 10:15 a.m., and run through Labor Day. Cost is $20 per person. A portion of the tour’s proceeds goes to help support the Glenwood Springs Historical Society. www.hotelcolorado.com

TAK E MY SHIF T APP

Assisting in a spontaneous, adventurous lifestyle for the working professional BY ALLISON BATTISTA It takes a local to know what locals need. Summit County family members, Kim, Megan, and Lizi Andersen, love outdoor adventures and the spontaneity of being able to get out. They created an excellent tool for others to enjoy the call of the outdoors too. Meet their creation, Take My Shift™, a lifestyle app that allows workers the opportunity to choose between the responsibilities of work and the lure of play. It is the answer to the demands of a spontaneous and adventurous culture that often chooses recreation over responsibility here in our mountain towns and beyond. When faced with a work shift, assignment, or task that one would rather skip, Take My Shift allows you to do that without leaving an employer short staffed. Take My Shift utilizes mobile technology to help teams manage work shift change requests. In the face of what seems to be a nocall, no-show epidemic, the app supports businesses and individuals with rotating shift workers or assignments so that small companies can run smoothly. The Take My Shift application has received glowing reviews. One of its users we interviewed stated, “We have been using Take My Shift in full force. We’ve got 13 extra coverage shifts posted, and people love the push notifications and calendar integration. From a manager standpoint, I am finding that shifts are getting picked up quicker with the program than with anything else we’ve tried previously.” The mother-daughter trio behind TMS believes the app’s success is primarily due to its overall simplicity. It offers an easy-to-use interface – one that teams don’t mind relying on, shift after shift. Users also agree that the mobility of the 22

S U MME R /FA L L 2019 | mo unta intow nm a ga z ine.com

platform is a major advantage. Team members can request shift coverage or claim available shifts anytime, from anywhere. “People today want a better balance in life, and in the past, that meant leaving your team high and dry. TMS gives team members the chance to get the most enjoyment out of life while being mindful of the needs of their coworkers and employer,” explains Kim Andersen, Co-Founder of Take My Shift. “There is no longer a reason for workers to skip their shift. Finding coverage has never been easier.” The Take My Shift app is one part of a multi-faceted brand designed to promote a spontaneous lifestyle while supporting small businesses - the lifeblood of local communities. The company accomplishes that mission through its mobile app, its small-business resource library, blog, and a charitable giving program. Take My Shift is passionate about supporting those with cystic fibrosis. Those afflicted fight relentlessly every day to make certain they live to have many more. The TMS Team also works to assist families that support the rigorous mental and physical routine required to comply with the treatment regimen prescribed by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This is a passion close to the Andersen’s hearts; their app assists them in giving their time to this cause as well. We love this concept brought to fruition. Rather than calling in, calling around, and trying to get a shift covered, all you need to do is check-in with the app and go! Take My Shift can be found and easily used by heading to the Apple store or Google Play on your phone.

Hand sewn products are proudly made and tested in Portland, Oregon. Since 2009, Cycle Dog has reclaimed hundreds of thousands of discarded inner tube rubber targeted for landfills. Lanette Fidrych started by collecting tubes from bike shops and sewing them in her home. The Lariat The Lariat in Buena Vista is striking gold in the mountain music scene! Music fans live for the opportunity to experience world-class talent in an intimate venue, and Lariat owners Court and Robbie Johnson provide that opportunity year-round in Buena Vista. Since taking over The Lariat in 2016, Court and Robbie have consistently booked top national and regional talent – Grammy-winning blues legends like John Primer and Otis Taylor as well as internationally renowned artists like John Popper of Blues Traveler and Davy Knowles from the Isle of Man. Increasingly, bands headed to or from Colorado’s music mecca – Red Rocks Amphitheater – are stopping by Buena Vista to perform at The Lariat as word spreads about this amazing musician-friendly venue. That list includes upcoming performances by Nicole Atkins and Town Mountain, btw. The Lariat’s dedication to live music separates it from other music venues, but the Lariat experience actually begins outside, with stunning vistas of the Collegiate Peaks and the historic character of small-town Buena Vista. Long known as home to the state’s best whitewater. BV sits alongside the Arkansas River surrounded by the highest concentration of 14ers in the state, natural hot springs and endless outdoor recreation opportunities. After taking in the outdoor fun, incredible scenery and small-town charm of BV, the experience continues inside. Court and Robbie transformed The Lariat from a nondescript dive bar into a state-

of-the-art live music venue, craft beer and cocktail bar, and gastropub restaurant featuring a locally sourced menu. Renovations accentuate the railroadera history of the brick building, creating a western steampunk vibe. After playing his first gig at The Lariat, Gasoline Lollipops front man Clay Rose, exclaimed, “We love it there. … It’s really one of the best venues in Colorado, especially the sound!” Since then, The Lariat has raised the bar by installing the only Meyer Linas sound system to be found in an intimate (300-capacity) venue in Colorado. Controlled by a Midas Pro 3 soundboard, the system produces impeccable sound and gives The Lariat bragging rights for the best sound system in Colorado’s mountain scene. Along with Court and Robbie, legendary sound man Brother Rob provides the human touch – a key ingredient in creating The Lariat’s magical sets of sonic delight. But don’t take our word for it. “As far as a good ol’ rock ’n’ roll venue, The Lariat is the place,” according to National Flat-picking Champion Tyler Grant of Grant Farm and Pickin’ on the Dead. Their line up of excellent music and shows are too numerous to list. We highly suggest heading to their website and then heading to Buena Vista dance shoes ready! 206 E Main Street Buena Vista www.thelariatbv.com

The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival Announced it's artist lineup several months ago and this crew of epic musicians might be the very best way to celebrate the end of the summer. Other additions include International Blues Challenge Winner Ms. Hy-C & Fresh Start, Joanna Connor Band, Husky & The Slow Attack, Eagle Eye Williamson, Grant Sabin with Michael Jennings, Molly Gene One Whoaman Band, along with five stand-up comedians, Wow! You should definitely be in Telluride, Colorado September 13 - 15, 2019. We have attended this event for many years and have watched its popularity grow. Through sun and snow and rain and lighting evacuations, people have not been driven away. It is a hardy, dedicated group of Blues enthusiasts that keep this event alive and thriving and I can tell you it has been some of the best nights of my life. I am thinking that event producer Steve Gumble, who made this event what it is since he was in his mid 20's feels that way, and more. Since its inception, this event has expanded to musicians now performing on three stages, tons of local, really good, regional food and craft vendors surrounding the perimeter. Kids have a special spot with activities and fun play features to enjoy too. I wish I was a kid who got to go to concerts, they all have so much fun. The show doesn't end until late night these days. The music starts right back up again at the TBB late night club shows aka Juke Joints are worth staying up for. In addition, a plethora of special events have been added throughout the festival. This years weekend includes the "Blisters & Brews" 5k fundraiser race, incredible free Yoga Sessions taught by instructors

of the Telluride Yoga Festival, the Telluride Blues Challenge, Blues For Breakfast, Campground Sessions and the Sunset Blues Concert. As the name implies, Brews, the festivals craft beer roots, taps an equally impressive and diverse collection of 56 craft breweries boasting 170 styles of craft beer and ciders at the festival's Grand Tasting. Highly regarded as one of the premier beer tasting events in the Southwest, the Grand Tasting takes place inside the festival grounds on Saturday, September 14 from 12 pm to 3 pm. Official festival beer sponsor Sierra Nevada Brewing Company will also be on hand with a bevy of favorites including classics and rare creations such as the "Back Porch Lager" (only available at Telluride Blues & Brews Festival). If you are new to this remarkable music festival then you will be wowed. The sounds, the people and the amazing views of Telluride's box canyon are truly spectacular. stay

The Dove Inn

A Relaxed Getaway in Downtown Golden Come have an adventure and then take some time to relax thoroughly at this sweet little inn, centrally located in Colorado’s first mountain town, Golden, Colorado. We recently discovered The Dove Inn this past spring as we escaped the long winter snows and descended into the emerald green valley of Golden. Owners Libby and Reagan Foster have recently renovated a beautiful old Victorian home and revived its classic architecture into a relaxing retreat with modern conveniences. The beauty of the building is enhanced with unique furnishings matching the time period of the 1866 home along with elegant lighting and fixtures. One lovely Surprise after another greeted us during our stay. The Dove Inn is operated as a behind the scenes service model. Your check-in and check out are completely automated with entry passwords supplied by the owners once you have booked and are ready to arrive. A continental breakfast is provided with fresh pastries and other delicacies from local bakeries and coffees and teas from area roasters. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need to create a meal if that is what you choose to do although you are steps away from great restaurants, bars and shopping with Golden’s main street, Washington Avenue, less than one block up from the inn’s location. We were totally digging their coffee station where you literally learn to become your own barista with their step by step video guides. I’ll say no more than that. You must go discover this sweet retreat on your own. Bring your bike and hiking shoes too, there are trails everywhere. We can’t wait to go back! www.doveinn.com 42

The beauty of fly-fishing lies in its challenges and traditions. The Challenges: Fly selection. Fly presentation. Water conditions. Weather conditions. Time of day. Time of year. Casting mechanics. Playing a trout. Landing it. The Traditions: Family. Fishing buddies. The heirloom rod. The great outdoors.Honey holes. Fishing stories that get better with time. To master the craft, fly-fishers must be driven to continually learn and accept challenges yet stay rooted in the traditions. True anglers deeply appreciate them both. “There’s a certain psychology to fly-fishing,” says Jeff Buerger, longtime angler and real estate partner with Hall & Hall in Colorado. “It’s a chance for people to escape, and that escape is taken seriously.”

Alpine Mountain Ranch

It’s also a chance for people to bond. “I’ve been fishing for 25 years, and I clearly remember the first time I went with mygrandmother,” Buerger says. “She taught me how to cast using a metronome. So, I have a deep connection with fishing. It evokes a lot of powerful feelings.” Colorado is one of the best spots on the planet for fishermen and women seeking to create their own traditions and tackle the challenges fly-fishing provides. From ranch and fishing communities to properties with thousands of acres and miles of riverbanks, a special piece of Colorado awaits every angler. “It’s up to what the buyer truly wants,” Buerger says. “There are incredible communities with a shared fishery that’s unmatched, and there are also people who want their land all to themselves and desire solitude.”

More than 3.3 miles of both banks of the East Fork of the Williams Fork River meanders through Motherwell, which also features four large lakes and 90 ponds.“The fishery is excellent,” Buerger says. “Big, feisty rainbows and browns can be caught there.” Perhaps the most important feature, Buerger says, is how secluded the ranch is. Ithas no private inholdings, and no public roads cross it – rare for a property coveringmore than 16 square miles.

With such a diverse selection of properties available, any angler can find exactly what they’re looking for in Colorado. “The fly-fishing here is world class,” Buerger says, “and these properties are one-of-a-kind. When searching for a retreat from the hectic life of the city and suburbs what are you looking for in a property? Some of us long for seclusion but many others seek out access to wonderful amenities and activities. Fresh air, beautiful views and the lull of the Blue River’s water descending from the 10 Mile Range and Continental Divide make The Shores at Breckenridge a highly desired community to live in and visit. This 10-acre resort community is perfectly situated along Breckenridge’s Blue River almost equaldistance from the Town of Breckenridge and Frisco, Colorado. 56 semi-custom paired homes and clustered single-family, detached homes with three or four bedrooms and three and one-half baths have extensive outdoor space surrounding each structure and great fishing out your front door. Not all in your family might find fishing is their passion which in their case and yours The Shores is perfect as it offers a plethora of activities and things to do from its doorstep. Golf is across the street at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Breckenridge Golf Club. The bike path, yards away from The Shores leads to all of Summit County’s towns and beyond. Look out the window and you will see the Breckenridge Ski Resort’s five huge peaks spanning 2,908 acres. No need to drive, the Summit Stage bus stops and transports you from the nearby bus shelter to the resort. If a Nordic adventure is more your style the adjacent bike path that runs by the community is groomed and transformed into a fabulous trail to skate or classic ski during the winter and connects to the Gold Run Ski Center and Frisco Nordic Center. Motherhood gets a shout-out at 41st Annual MountainFilm

by Joy Elizabeth Martin As one of the coolest film festivals in the world, MountainFilm guarantees a heavy dose of inspiration and the perfect tonic to shake participants out of Winter doldrums. Held every Memorial Day weekend in Telluride before setting out on a world tour, the action-packed festival features nonfiction stories focused on timely, relevant issues spanning from the environment to social justice, replete with a healthy smattering of alpenglow and Oprah? That’s right. Media powerhouse, Oprah Winfrey, made a surprise appearance at this year’s soiree. And while Oprah impacted the audience to the core like only Oprah can, we wanted to highlight a nugget of a film that debuted this year on a different stage: a short film from Q Media called “Frosty.” For those who don’t follow ultra-running, Anna “Frosty” Frost hails from Dunedin, New Zealand, and Durango, Colorado. She’s not only one of the premier trail runners in the world but considered one of the trailblazers of the niche sport. The 37-year-old began racing competitively in 2004, claiming the overall title in the Skyrunner World Series in 2010 and barreling forth to win 10 gold medals in some of the world’s toughest races, including the formidable Hardrock 100 in both 2015 and 2016. Beyond her course records, Frosty is beloved by fans for her approachability, adorable New Zealand accent and her grasp of sisu, the Finnish concept of possessing the indomitable spirit (the very essence of MountainFilm itself). This lovely 15-minute documentary celebrates these praiseworthy traits, following Frosty from her childhood roots in New Zealand to podium finishes around the globe and into her next adventure: motherhood. “Running is a pretty small part of life, even though it’s our entire life,” says Ron “Braz” Braselton, Frosty’s husband and owner of Trail Run Adventures. “It’s not that important. But growing a human is. It’s gonna be another girl I can’t keep up with, so now I’ll have two girls that’ll beat me at everything. That’ll be fun.” Their baby girl, Skylar Journey, was born on March 16, 2019, in New Zealand. She popped out wide-eyed and ready for action. A doctor told the equally wide-eyed parents to “buckle up for this one;” she’d never seen a more alert newborn. Tucked in her pram, Skylar slept soundly for once while Mum took the stage at MountainFilm following the “Frosty” premier. She thanked her sponsor, Merrell, for the opportunity to keep her job through the pregnancy and early stages of motherhood, a rarity for professional female athletes. Frosty also addressed her struggles with post-partum depression, encouraging mothers to reach out for support and not feel alone when they face the overwhelming challenges of bringing new life into the world – a world that Frosty can’t wait to share with Skylar: “I’m excited to teach my child to move, to explore, to experience through nature, where the lessons are pure out there.” To follow Skylar’s quickly unfolding journey, follow @ annafrosty on Instagram. THE COLORADO SPIRITS TRAIL Kentucky has their Bourbon Trail but have you heard about Colorado’s? Colorado boasts one of the most vibrant and largest distilling communities in the country. 61 Colorado craft distilleries have joined together to create the Colorado Spirits Trail. To inspire the discovery of spirits pioneered by some of the most creative makers in the industry this group of passionate distillers invite novices and connoisseurs alike to experience their delicious spirited creations across the Eastern Plains, Rocky Mountains, and the Western Slope. With Autumn on its way, you may want to consider a tasting tour to discover the vibrant colors and fantastic flavors of our local Mountain Town Distilleries and the hamlets they occupy. Make it a fun expedition and get your Official Map & Guide at participating distilleries, Colorado tourist information office or download a printable version from the Colorado Spirits Trail website. You can collect stamps on your printed map at each participating distillery. After visiting 10 distilleries present your stamped map to one of the participating distilleries and ask for a t-shirt. The distillery will give you a t-shirt and bragging rights for having completed the first round of the Colorado Spirits Trail. Even better, become a ‘TrailBlazer’. Once you’re done with your tour around the mountains head to the front range to all the participating distilleries represented on the 2019 map and get two bottles of spirits selected randomly from the participating distilleries. If you really want to taste the distilleries but might not have the time to drive about then we suggest the upcoming Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival Still on the Hill Grand Tasting being held October 21, 2019. THE LOST CAJUN C O L O R A D O

BY HOLLY RESIGNOLO I am not from New Orleans and the closest I ever got to Cajun food was the Gumbo my mom would make on occasion, complete with Okra. Okra, that is a scary vegetable to most kids especially if it is not cooked correctly. My wonderful mother is from Kentucky so I thought it was some type of stew from where she hales and as you can probably gather, I did not think very highly of it. When I moved to Colorado I learned that this classic dish is indigenous to Louisiana, Cajun Country, and is pretty darn good. I happened upon a Pagosa Springs restaurant – The Lost Cajun Restaurant and fell in love. Unassuming, this restaurant serves up some of the freshest and well-prepared food that I could have ever imagined. The staff and service were exceptional. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated promptly by their staff and presented a sampling platter: Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Lobster-Shrimp Bisque,

Seafood Gumbo, Crawfish Etouffee and Red Beans and Rice. I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with each dish before I made a decision on what to order. To my delight, they were all amazing which almost made it more difficult to decide what to eat. I will say the Lobster-Shrimp bisque with a rich creamy sherry finish was incredible. The Red Beans and Rice, I have NEVER had better and the Gumbo’s and Etouffee were perfect. We were on a mission that evening, my daughter had never had Crawfish and she wanted to try the Etouffee. I was interested in the Catfish. We found a plate that offered all of it together and split it. The Catfish with a cornmeal batter was fried to perfection and served with tartar sauce and lemon. The Etouffee was accompanied by rice, potato salad and buttered French bread and was rich and delicious.

Prior to ordering dinner, it was decided that we must try the Beignets so we made sure to leave some room in our belly’s. Piping hot and dusted in powdered sugar this treat was the finale! YUM YUM is the final word! Nothing fancy here but the flavors, preparation and service at this restaurant are outstanding so I am shouting it from the mountain tops! Smell That Bread Bakery BY HOLLY RESIGNOLO

Smell that bread, and croissants, and bagels, and cinnamon rolls, and cookies, and pies, and all those other sweet treats that Smell That Bread Bakery provides on a daily basis. Tucked away in the cutest little storefront on 11th Street in Steamboat Springs is a wonderful group of bakers producing incredible rustic bread and classic pastries that you won’t want to miss when you’re in the area. Julie and Sam Gordon started as a wholesale bread business supplying area restaurants but their baked goods enticing fragrances began drawing a crowd. In May of 2017, the Gordon’s opened a retail space that quickly gained popularity amongst the locals and it has become one of my favorite spots to visit when visiting Steamboat Springs. Their croissants are gloriously flaky on the outside, soft, chewy and melt in the mouth on the inside. Huge sweet cinnamon rolls are a favorite along with holy wow! KouignAmann’s, an irresistible round crusty cake that pairs perfectly with their brewed coffee. Thick crusty rustic breads, baguettes, challahs and rolls are available to take out for later too. This duo knows bread and the intricate science required to bake at altitude. A background that includes traditional French Pastry and Bread Baking instruction they received at the San Francisco Baking Institute has resulted in a deliciously satisfying morning breakfast and compliment to evening meals with their bakery’s take away. If I were deserted on a desert island and the only food I could choose to eat was bread and butter than I would be sure it was Smell That Bread bakeries bread. 135 11th Street Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80487 66

STORY BY KRISTEN LUMMIS

DOWNHILLING POWDERHORN When the Powderhorn Bike Park on Colorado’s Grand Mesa opened in 2015, it was not exactly what anyone would call family-friendly. During its inaugural season, the park earned a reputation for hard-core, rowdy riding on just two trails — intermediate Blue Ribbon and Pinball, a black trail with a highly technical upper section that many, including professional riders, classify as double-black. This changed in 2018 when the resort opened Mutton Buster, a beginner trail that winds downhill for four miles, dropping over 1600’ in elevation at a forgiving and meandering pace. “While our original trails appealed to core, experienced riders, we saw an incredible shift when we opened Mutton Buster,” explains Powderhorn’s Ryan Robinson. “We now see a ton of families and less-experienced downhill riders. These riders have pretty much become an equal demographic to the core riders. It’s been incredible to see.” For 2019, beginner riders and families will have even more choices, with a new top-to-bottom beginner trail and a new top-to-bottom intermediate trail. The resort is also building a base area pump track and a beginner cross-country loop at the top of the mountain, making Powderhorn a prime destination for families, and anyone else, interested in trying downhill biking.

Why Downhill Biking is Different

It’s tempting to think of downhill biking as mountain biking without the climbs. Yet, both the trails, which feature banked curves, obstacles like jumps, rocks, roots and ladders, and the bikes, are unique to this sport.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. Downhill biking really is downhill. It’s a lift-served, gravity-driven sport that is surprisingly physical, despite eliminating the uphill climb. Riding the lift to the top of the mountain isn’t just a way to save energy or wimp out. If you’re riding a downhill specific bike, it’s almost a necessity. 2. Downhill bikes are different from other mountain bikes. These bikes are designed to go downhill with agility, power and stability. They are not built to be pedaled uphill. To keep the bike steady at high speeds and on steep trail, downhill bikes are heavier with additional suspension to smooth out bigger jumps and drops. Even the brakes and gearing on a downhill bike are different. What’s most noticeable however, is that the seat on a downhill bike is usually positioned as low as possible. This is because downhill riders stand on the pedals while balancing and shifting their weight, with gravity providing momentum. 3. Downhill riders, of all abilities, wear full face helmets and pads. Downhill biking is no more dangerous than any other type of biking, but the speeds and distance gained off of obstacles is greater. This means if you fall, you might fall harder.

Tips for Success

Birgit Morris grew up in the Grand Valley and graduated from Palisade High School in 2017. She started mountain biking with her dad when she was about eight years old and her first downhill biking experience was at Powderhorn in 2015. She’s now a national champion collegiate mountain biker who competes in four disciplines: cross-country, short track, dual slalom and downhill. Morris especially enjoys downhill. “I love the thrill, the adrenalin, the aspect of taking risks and not knowing what is around the next corner. With downhill, you never know what to expect.”

Here are her tips for getting started, enjoying the sport and staying safe.

1. Start slow. Morris suggests starting easy and progressively building from green to blue to black trails. 2. Follow riders who are better than you are. Morris grew up following her father on mountain bike trails and thinks it’s a good way to learn. She suggests observing the lines other riders take, their style, their technique and how they shift their weight. Try to improve by matching their movements. 3. Don’t go too big. The snowsports world has a terrain park mantra that is equally applicable to downhill biking: pre-ride, re-ride, free ride. Whenever you ride a new trail, start slow and scope out the trail. On the next ride, pick up the pace with caution. Finally, on the third ride, boost it up. 4. Have fun! While Morris admits that she feels “a little bit scared” when riding downhill, she believes the fear adds to the challenge which adds to the fun. When starting out, make sure the fun outweighs the fear. Follow these additional tips to help build the fun from one run to the next: Rent a downhill bike and pads. Ask for tips or take a lesson. Ride with friends who will help you. Go at your own pace and walk if you feel uncomfortable. Stop when you need a rest. Take snack and water breaks. Enjoy the views and the cool mountain air.

Downhill Biking at Powderhorn

The Powderhorn Bike Park has five top-to-botton trails covering 1650 vertical feet, served by a high-speed quad chairlift. The Park is open to all ages and abilities. Rental bikes and body armor are available. In addition to rental gear, Powderhorn offers downhill mountain biking lessons and clinics. Two-hour beginner lessons, including a bike, lift ticket and all protective gear, are $49. Reservations are recommended. Depending upon snowmelt and weather, the Powderhorn Bike Park is open Fridays and weekends from mid-June through mid-September. In addition to the bike park, Powderhorn offers scenic chairlift rides, hiking and free parking lot camping on summer weekends.

The Trailhead is Buena Vista’s locally owned and operated outdoor retailer, and CORE is a motorized action group based out of Buena Vista. We are a mix of both motorized and non-motorized trail users who have teamed up to bring you 14er Fest – a celebration of fall in the Rocky Mountains. Our team’s inspiration comes from the amazing 14,000 foot peaks that surround Buena Vista, Colorado. Our county has the highest concentration of 14ers in all of Colorado and in all of the United States. These peaks coupled with the Arkansas River that flows right through downtown BV have inspired us to create a festival that supports the incredible environment where we live, work and
