S

tep back in time to a place with beautiful tree lined streets and many historic buildings restored to their original state. Murphy, North Carolina is an old town with its origin dating back to 1830’s and preservation of the historic sites are a must see when visiting.

The Cherokee County Courthouse was built in 1927 in Classical Revival Style and features a oriented portico faced with blue marble. The building is considered one of North Carolina’s finest Beaux Arts courthouses and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located next door is the Cherokee County Historical Museum that displays a rich history of Native Americans and pioneers that helped settle the area. In addition to spotlighting the history of Cherokee County, the museum also reflects the life of the Cherokee Indian with more than 2,000

authentic Cherokee artifacts. Mineral collection and more than 800 dolls are also displayed dating back to 1865.

The Historic Henn Theatre on Tennessee street was built in 1934 and still operates today showing movies. The family owned over 23 theaters at one time operated by P.J. Henn and this is the only one of two that survived the Great Depression.

Since it’s remodel in 2009 they have added all new surround sound to the theater and have expanded the facilities for concessions.

Murphy has restaurants, many unique shops, galleries, wineries, pubs, coffee shops and other interesting establishments all within walking distance in the heart of town. Enjoy the Murphy Art Walk, held every May through November in downtown on the first Friday of every month.

Located in the heart of Murphy was once the historical Grand Station for the railway. Today all that remains is the freight area that is now the L & N Depot located on Hiwassee Street. Today the Depot is visited by many who come to the Farmer’s Market and walk the trail of the Murphy River Walk and Canoe Trails that follows the Hiwassee and Valley River through the outskirts of town to Konehete Park.

During the season many visitors and residents participate in many of the numerous recreational activities in Murphy that include golfing, horseback riding, camping, back packing, hiking, hunting, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, and white water rafting. Canopy Tours have Ziplines, or pan for gold, explore gem mines, paintball, skeet shoot, mini golf, or join in for an old fashioned wagon ride.

Recreational activities are unlimited from local trout streams to mountain biking. Hiwassee Lake is considered one of the most beautiful in the state.

Visitors can hike the trails, picnic overlooking the lake, or camp to view the natural wildlife.

Wether you enjoy natures beauty or the small town friendliness, Murphy is the town to stay and play for your “Best Getaway in the North Carolina Mountains”!

Nantahala River

The Nantahala River is a river in western North Carolina in the United States, within the Nantahala National Forest, and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Two-lane U.S. Highway 19/74, once part of the Trail of Tears, runs along the river, picnic areas dotting the route.

The River rises near the border of Georgia and North Carolina, close to the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and the Appalachian Trail. It empties into the Little Tennessee River at Fontana Lake.

The word Nantahala is Cherokee and means “Land of the Noonday Sun”. The river runs through a narrow and steep gorge where in some areas the sun reaches the ground only when it is directly overhead during the middle of the day.

This river is popular with whitewater rafters, canoeists, and kayakers. Commercial rafting began in 1972 when the Nantahala Outdoor Center opened, leading to thousands of paddlers annually running the river. Today there are ten different outfitters operating on the Nantahala river. Each outfitter has a permit issued by the Forest Service which allows them to commercially raft the river. The Nantahala is one of the most popular rivers in the southeastern United States for paddlers of all skill levels.

The Nantahala is also a popular destination for fly fishing.

Trout Unlimited has named the river one of the 100 Best Trout Streams in America, and it is widely regarded as one of the premier destinations for trout fishing in the Eastern United States. The river is frequently used for competitions, clinics, and practices held by the US Men’s and US Youth National Fly Fishing teams.
