tep back in time to a place with beautiful tree lined streets and many historic buildings restored to their original state. Murphy, North Carolina is an old town with its origin dating back to 1830’s and preservation of the historic sites are a must see when visiting.

The Cherokee County Courthouse was built in 1927 in Classical Revival Style and features a oriented portico faced with blue marble. The building is considered one of North Carolina’s finest Beaux Arts courthouses and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located next door is the Cherokee County Historical Museum that displays a rich history of Native Americans and pioneers that helped settle the area. In addition to spotlighting the history of Cherokee County, the museum also reflects the life of the Cherokee Indian with more than 2,000

authentic Cherokee artifacts. Mineral collection and more than 800 dolls are also displayed dating back to 1865.

The Historic Henn Theatre on Tennessee street was built in 1934 and still operates today showing movies. The family owned over 23 theaters at one time operated by P.J. Henn and this is the only one of two that survived the Great Depression.

Since it’s remodel in 2009 they have added all new surround sound to the theater and have expanded the facilities for concessions.

Murphy has restaurants, many unique shops, galleries, wineries, pubs, coffee shops and other interesting establishments all within walking distance in the heart of town. Enjoy the Murphy Art Walk, held every May through November in downtown on the first Friday of every month.

Located in the heart of Murphy was once the historical Grand Station for the railway. Today all that remains is the freight area that is now the L & N Depot located on Hiwassee Street. Today the Depot is visited by many who come to the Farmer’s Market and walk the trail of the Murphy River Walk and Canoe Trails that follows the Hiwassee and Valley River through the outskirts of town to Konehete Park.

Nantahala River

The Nantahala River is a river in western North Carolina in the United States, within the Nantahala National Forest, and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Two-lane U.S. Highway 19/74, once part of the Trail of Tears, runs along the river, picnic areas dotting the route.

The River rises near the border of Georgia and North Carolina, close to the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and the Appalachian Trail. It empties into the Little Tennessee River at Fontana Lake.

The word Nantahala is Cherokee and means “Land of the Noonday Sun”. The river runs through a narrow and steep gorge where in some areas the sun reaches the ground only when it is directly overhead during the middle of the day.

The Nantahala is one of the most popular rivers in the southeastern United States for paddlers of all skill levels.

The Nantahala is also a popular destination for fly fishing. Trout Unlimited has named the river one of the 100 Best Trout Streams in America, and it is widely regarded as one of the premier destinations for trout fishing in the Eastern United States. The river is frequently used for competitions, clinics, and practices held by the US Men’s and US Youth National Fly Fishing teams.

This river is popular with whitewater rafters, canoeists, and kayakers. Commercial rafting began in 1972 when the Nantahala Outdoor Center opened, leading to thousands of paddlers annually running the river. Cherohala Skyway

The Cherohala Skyway is a 43 mile National Forest Scenic Byway that connects Robbinsville, N.C., (Hwy. 143), to Tellico Plains, TN., (Hwy. 165). Often referred to as “A Drive Among The Clouds�; the Cherohala is named for the two national forests that it crosses; the Cherokee in Tennessee and the Nantahala in North Carolina.

Before starting your journey; make sure to fill your gas tank and get needed supplies as there are no stores in this remote area. With many twists and turns, take extreme caution on your speed, including warning of fog can be very thick due to elevations. It can be desolate at night and extremely dangerous in the winter months. Temperatures can drop as much as 20 degrees during the first eleven miles of your drive from the North Carolina side as you climb from 2660 ft. to 5,390 ft.

at the Santeetlah Overlook which is the highest point on the Skyway.

The best times to drive the Skyway are spring through fall as there are numerous overlooks and picnic areas along the route. If coming from the North Carolina side you will pass the remote interior of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest including Santeetlah Gap, Hooper and Shoot Cove. As the elevations continue to climb at 4,000 + ft. at Wright Cove, a popular hiking trail starts at the Cheoah Ranger District at 5,500+ ft. called Huckleberry Knob. Many people enjoy the view of the Unicoi Mountains in the Nantahala National Forest.

are scenic walks. Indian Boundary Campground is a popular spot for camping with 85 sites including some with electrical hookups and amenities to rustic sites w/fire rings. Campers also enjoy a large lake perfect for kayaking, canoeing, swimming and fishing.

A detour from the main Cherohala Parkway on Forest Service Road 210 is well worth the short trip to Bald River Falls with water cascades over 100 feet onto the rocks below that can be seen from the comfort of your vehicle.

As you get closer to the Tellico Plains you will travel along the Tellico River, which is popular with fishermen and white-water enthusiasts. The river leads you into this sleepy little town that has a Visitor’s Center and The Charles Hall Museum. Just north in the nearby town of Venore visitors can see the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and Fort Loudoun State Historical Area.

This magnificent highway of the Cherohala Skyway took over three decades to build at a cost of one hundred million dollars. Although the trip can be made in a few hours, take your time for sightseeing some of the best mountain scenery in the world.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The border between Tennessee and North Carolina runs northeast to southwest through the centerline of the park. It is the most visited national park in the United States with over 11.3 million recreational visitors in 2016. On its route from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail also passes through the center of the park. The park was chartered by the United States Congress in 1934 and officially dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940.

The park encompasses 522,419 acres, making it one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The main park entrances are located along U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) at the towns of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina. It was the first national park whose land and other costs were paid for in part with federal funds; previous parks were funded wholly with state money or private funds.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a major tourist attraction in the region. Over 11.3 million recreational visitors/tourists and an additional 11 million non-recreational visitors traveled to, or through, the park in 2016. The recreational figure represents nearly twice as many tourists as the Grand Canyon, which received nearly 6 million visitors the same year. Surrounding towns, notably Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Townsend, Tennessee, and Cherokee, Sylva, Maggie Valley, and Bryson City, North Carolina receive a significant portion of their income from tourism associated with the park.

The two main visitors’ centers inside the park are Sugarlands Visitors’ Center near the Gatlinburg entrance to the park and Oconaluftee Visitor Center near Cherokee, North Carolina at the eastern entrance to the park. These ranger stations provide exhibits on wildlife, geology, and the history of the park. They also sell books, maps, and souvenirs.

U.S. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) bisects the park, providing automobile access to many trailheads and overlooks, most notably that of Newfound Gap. At an elevation of 5,048 feet, it is the lowest gap in the mountains and is situated near the center of the park, on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line, halfway between the border towns of

Gatlinburg and Cherokee. It was here that in 1940, from the Rockefeller Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt dedicated the national park. On clear days Newfound Gap offers arguably the most spectacular scenes accessible via highway in the park.

The park has a number of historical attractions.

The most well-preserved of these is Cades Cove, a valley with a number of preserved historic buildings including log cabins, barns, and churches. Cades Cove is the single most frequented destination in the national park. Self-guided automobile and bicycle tours offer the many sightseers a glimpse into the way of life of old-time southern Appalachia. Other historical areas within the park include Roaring Fork, Cataloochee, Elkmont, and the Mountain Farm Museum and Mingus Mill at Oconaluftee.

There are 850 miles of trails and unpaved roads in the park for hiking, including seventy miles of the Appalachian Trail. Mount Le Conte is one of the most frequented destinations in the park. Its elevation is 6,593 feet— the third highest summit in the park and, measured from its base to its highest peak, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River.

Alum Cave Trail is the most heavily used of the five paths en route to the summit. It provides many scenic overlooks and unique natural attractions such as Alum Cave Bluffs and Arch Rock. Hikers may spend a night at the LeConte Lodge, located near the summit, which provides cabins and rooms for rent (except during the winter season). Accessible solely by trail, it is the only private lodging available inside the park.

Both the Laurel Falls and Clingman’s Dome trails offer relatively easy, short, paved paths to their respective destinations. The Laurel Falls Trail leads to a powerful 80-foot waterfall, and the Clingman’s Dome Trail takes visitors on an uphill climb to a fifty-foot observation deck, which on a clear day offers views for many miles over the Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia mountains.
