B

airsville Georgia has the energy of contemporary life combined with traditions of the history of the Appalachian Mountains. Every year people travel to visit this quaint little town and are captivated by it’s charming downtown city and friendly hometown hospitality.

Visitors are immediately drawn to the Courthouse, located in the center of a traffic circle built in 1899.

Although the original clock tower has been removed it is still visible on display with a Museum open to the public. The Union County Historical Society has nightly bell music from the tower and Friday Night Concerts of local bands and Gospel singings May – October.

Blairsville was incorporated in 1835 & named for Frank (Francis Preston) “Blair”, who was a Washington, D.C. newspaper editor. History abounds in downtown Blairsville at the Mountain Life Museum, which replicates life in the early days. The Mock House circa 1906 and Payne Cabin. Other historical sites include The Reece Farm & Heritage Center, homestead of the famous poet Byron Herbert Reece. Continuing South on Hwy. 129 is the Walasi Yi Center; located at the top of Blood Mountain where the 2,175-mile-long Appalachian Trail passes through.

Visitors will relish the ever-changing panorama of this breathtaking scenery of the many opportunities of Recreational activities including golf, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as fishing and watersports. Lake Nottely Reservoir, a 4,180-acre lake has a dam reservoir that features a beach, camping area and is a popular place forviewing wildlife. Many Watersports outlets provide fishing supplies seasonal boating & jet ski rentals to help you enjoy this beautiful scenic mountain paradise.

The Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County covers more than 98,000 acres.

Adventurers can explore eight wonderful waterfalls, including Vogel State Park just south of town, as well as petroglyphs left by ancient natives in the soapstone at Trackrock Archeological Area, just east of Blairsville.

Brasstown Bald offers a 360 degree view of breathtaking sights at 4,784 ft. with an Observation Deck and Visitors Center open May– November.

The Downtown area has many events including the Spring Arts, Crafts, & Music Festival held Memorial Day weekend. The heart of the town has cruise-in on the square, parades, concerts, great shopping, and restuarants. Other annual events include The Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games held each June with Bagpip Bands, dancing, Scottish food, children’s games, Historical Re-enactors and atheletes.

The Butternut Creek Festival held in July with local and regional handmade Arts & Crafts. The Sorghum Festival in October that showcases Sorghum Syrup making, great food and live entertainment.

Year round events and beautiful scenery invite people to lodge in cabins, retreats, and campgrounds located throughout Blairsville for family vacations, weddings, and weekend getaways. Local wineries and distilleries offer tastings for agri-tourism and often have entertainment on weekends.

Take a Road Trip to Clayton, Georgia and explore the surrounding natural beauty of Rabun County for your perfect mountain getaway. Travelers enjoy the many scenic routes around every corner as they drive through this peaceful mountain community.

Downtown Clayton - Stroll leisurely on Main Street through the local shops that feature the best in art, antiques, books, gifts, wine and so much more! Dine at one of the fine restaurants or experience the old-fashioned drug store soda fountain! The Rock House, circa 1935 is a charming historical gem to downtown and along with the Civic Center helps in hosting year round events like "Celebrate Clayton" held every April.

Wineries - Rabun County also produces many award-winning wines at several vineyards in the area. Each weekend many have events with live music, food and tastings to entertain visitors.

Black Rock Mountain State Park is the highest state park in Georgia straddling the Eastern Continental Divide at an elevation of 3, 640 feet.

There is a Visitor Center and a 17 acres lake with 5 different hiking trails for visitors to admire the wildflowers, streams, small waterfalls and lush forests. Accomodations include campsites and cottages with amenities for picnics and children's playground. Open March 16 - November 30th.

Foxfire Mountain culture has been extensively documented in a successful book series known worldwide. The Foxfire Museum is located in Mountain City on Black Rock Mountain which is Georgia’s highest State Park.

Lake Burton is one of the largest lakes in Rabun County at 2,775 acres and 62 miles of shoreline.

Offering three activity areas: Jones Bridge Park with two sheltered picnic areas. Timpson Cove Beach has white sand beach and picnic area.

Murray Cove Boat Launch Area has paved boat ramp for small- and medium-sized boats.

Moccasin Creek State Park is a perfect place for accommodating RV, trailer or tent campers.

Located on Lake Burton it has a fully accessible fishing pier & trout filled creek. Hiking trails with wildlife observation tower, nearby waterfalls, playground, boat dock & ramp make this park’s location a perfect spot for exploring.

Lake Rabun is the second largest lake at 834 acres, 25 miles of shoreline, and host to Nacoochee Park. Located on the north end of the lake, Nacoochee Park recreation area is perfect for a picnic & fishing located just off of Lake Rabun Road. Rabun Beach recreation area overlooks the lake to offer camping, hiking & swimming. Hike the 1.3-mile Rabun Beach Trail which ends at Angel Falls.

Chattooga River that borders the Georgia/ South Carolina line offers whitewater rafting during the summer months. The Chattooga was used as a setting for the fictional Cahulawassee River in the book and film Deliverance.

Beautiful trails are yours to explore in the great outdoors of the North Georgia Mountains. Just pack a snack and plenty of water, get your gear ready and go for a hike.

Ellijay THREE FORKS Trail: To the left (North) on the trail is Long Creek Falls (2.3 miles round trip) . To the right is a beautiful section of old growth forest along Stover Creek.

Directions: Take 52 East from Ellijay about 4.8 miles. Turn left on Big Creek Road at the Dollar General. Follow this road about 15.4 miles (the final .4 miles are dirt) to Forest Service 58 and turn Right. This road follows Noontootla Creek to Three Forks. Parking is available where the trails cross the road.

Blue Ridge FREE KNOB LOOP Trail: 2.5 miles, easy rating Directions from Blue Ridge, Georgia: Travel east (toward Blairsville, GA) on GA Hwy 515, approx.

0.8 miles past intersection with GA Hwy 5. Turn Right at Windy Ridge Rd., go 0.2 miles to dead end with Old U.S. 76. Turn left, go 0.2 miles to Aska Road on right. Continue south on Aska Read to Shallowford Bridge. Turn left across river and immediate right on dirt-gravel road leading to Dial, GA. At 0.4 miles come to point where trail enters road from forest. Continue east on road to parking area at 1.2 miles.

Dahlonega YAHOOLA CREEK Trail: This is about a 4 mile trail that circles Yahoola Creek Reservoir but also swerves back into the woods a ways. This trail is surprisingly tough with many short, steep climbs in the back hills. While this is a wide doubletrack trail that isn’t always very entertaining, this trail is right on the edge of town and is very easy-to-access. It’s great for a short after work hike or trail run without having to drive all the way up to the Appalachian Trail.

Directions: from Dahlonega go north past the Walmart on the “bypass.” Go straight through the stop light at the entrance to Walmart, and straight through the stoplight at the junction with 52.

Shortly after the second light, hang a right into the small gravel parking area overlooking the dam.
