Manalapan is a suburban town, located 37 miles south of New York City, with a population of 14,276 households and 40,877 total residents. Easily accessible, Manalapan is centrally located and offers convenient access to interstates, state highways and the Jersey Shore beaches, making it an excellent place to live or own a business.

The town is historically significant. In June of 1778, Manalapan’s Battlefield State Park was the site of the Battle of Monmouth, one of the longest battles of the American Revolutionary War.

Manalapan is home to the headquarters facility of the Monmouth County Library. The Manalapan Township Parks & Recreation offers a robust selection of programs and events, including sports, fitness, art, dance, summer camp and more. The Recreation facility is the site for many community events including Manalapan Day, Car Nights, Movies and Concerts in the Park and holiday events.

Transportation/Commuting:

NJ Transit currently provides bus service on the 139 route to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, to Newark and Jersey City on the 64 and 67 routes, and local service on the 307 route.

Academy Bus currently provides bus service to downtown Manhattan.

The nearest train stations to Manalapan are Metropark in Iselin, Metuchen, New Brunswick, and Aberdeen-Matawan.

Manalapan has 5 commuter parking lots. Annual passes cost $201. Franklin Lane & Symmes Drive lots offer daily parking at a cost of $2 per day.

History of Manalapan

Manalapan Township has a long and rich history dating to the Revolutionary War. From the late nineteenth to the midtwentieth centuries, the township was composed of several small villages that sustained themselves through farming and figuring significantly in becoming a thriving area for commerce. Originally part of Freehold, Manalapan was established in 1848 when Freehold was divided. We are excited to be celebrating our 175th year in 2023.

The new township could aptly be described as a farming community. Its products at the time were grains (wheat, rye, barley, corn and oats) and a variety of vegetables. Businesses included farmers, grain and saw mill owners, carpenters, fruit growers, horse and mule dealers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights and distillers of apple whiskey. At that time seven mills were operating, both grist and saw mills, as well as two woolen mills. Sadly, only the building which housed the grist mill at Millhurst still exists today. The name Manalapan is derived from a word in the Lenape language meaning “good bread” or “good land”.

The Revolutionary War has particular significance for Manalapan since the important Battle of Monmouth was fought mostly on our farmlands in what is now preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Every year you can enjoy a re-enactment of the battle in full uniform in late June.

The name Manalapan is derived from a word in the Lenape language meaning “good bread” or “good land”.

The population of the Township grew very slowly as farms tended to be handed down from father to son. Great growth occurred between 1960 and the present day when developers bought farms and built houses. Known for our excellent school system we are now a much sought after suburban area conveniently flanked by Route 9 and Route 33.
