EXTENSION OF CULTURAL PERMEABILITY. 1ST SEMESTER 2022 (M.ARCH)

The architectural proposition in Tamworth CBD aims to bridge the urban cultural experience and promote a connection between the indigenous community and the town. The site research uncovered a lack of indigenous administrative, commercial, and cultural spaces, resulting in a sense of separation for the indigenous people. To address this, the design proposes indigenous community-based commercial and cultural spaces, allowing for a reconnection with their heritage and fostering a stronger indigenous community within the town.

The building’s programs invite individuals from other CBD communities to experience the indigenous culture, creating relationships with the indigenous community. By reinterpreting typical urban materials alongside indigenous-related building materials, the design fosters both urban cohesiveness and a celebration of indigenous culture. The open ground plane serves as a yarning space for indigenous people and acts as a link between Peel St. and Kable Ave., enabling others in Tamworth to engage with the indigenous culture throughout the site.

This architectural intervention promotes cultural permeability, where indigenous and non-indigenous individuals come together to mediate the cultural realm within the town. By creating a sense of inclusivity and shared experiences, the project helps indigenous people feel like an integral part of the Tamworth community. The use of indigenous-related materials alongside typical urban elements fosters a harmonious blend of cultures and contributes to the overall urban fabric of the CBD.

RHIZOMATIC BUILDING

SUMMER SEMESTER 2023 (M.ARCH)

This design studio embraces the modernist Indian city of Chandigarh as a ‘thick’ ecological landscape. In effect, the city of Chandigarh could be assumed to be made of multiple ‘horizontal’ layers – of which, the most recent one remains visible. In teasing apart these intertwined layers, we leverage design moves on three fronts:

First – towards interrogating Corbusier’s musings on this provocative urban ensemble and particularly on the scope of its natural setting. In effect, weighing and establishing his valiant intentions - some expressed in sculptural artefacts while others implied in the choreographies of everyday lives.

Second – to project forwards from current day, and therefore envisaging a sustainable ‘ecological future’ for the city based on the afterlives of our formal actions. And - thereby, underlining how Chandigarh’s transformative growth past its inception until present day and beyond, would visibly serve as ‘food for thought’ on how the ‘landscape ecology’ of the city could be rethought. Third – to view how the close association of our ‘interventions’ with, towards, and around water – would dramatically change the formal and spatial language of the architecture that we envisage. What would this ‘hybrid architecture’ be, and where would be it reside?

MULTI MODE TRANSPORT HUB

1ST SEMESTER 2023 (M.ARCH)

The Smithfield Community Transit Corridor embodies a visionary response to the pressing urban challenges faced by Smithfield, encompassing transportation, flood mitigation, and community engagement. This proposition presents a sustainable and active future transport solution that not only addresses the detrimental environmental impact of cars but also seeks to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion plaguing Smithfield.

In addition to the transportation aspect, the proposal recognizes the dearth of community spaces within Smithfield, which hinders active social interaction and communication among its residents. To address this, the design integrates excavated playgrounds, skateparks, and raised seating areas strategically positioned to foster communal gathering and engagement. Simultaneously, these features serve a dual purpose by acting as a protective barrier, preventing flooding water from encroaching upon the adjacent residential areas.

By weaving together the fabric of community engagement and flood mitigation, the Smithfield Community Transit Corridor establishes a harmonious and resilient urban framework. It not only prioritizes sustainable modes of transportation but also creates opportunities for meaningful social interactions, enhancing the overall livability and well-being of the Smithfield community.

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT

2ND SEMESTER 2023 (M.ARCH)

This course develops skills in site planning, structural and environmental building systems, construction technologies, building services, and consultant coordination, along with a detailed understanding of local authority planning requirements and relevant building codes and standards. Students develop, integrated and advanced structural, environmental and construction solutions for a studio project through tutorials and assignments that also develop skills in investigation and innovation suited to design practice and global challenges. The course develops students’ skills in BIM modelling, assessment and documentation of three-dimensional building form.

This course aims to develop students’ ability to work with planning codes and to analyse, synthesise and incorporate structural and environmental building systems, construction technologies and building services, within the constraints of building codes and relevant standards.
