Letter from the President

Dear Community,

This year at Mt. Hood Community College is all about breakthroughs. With the passage of our historic bond, we are breaking free of outdated facilities and embarking on projects that will transform our campus for generations to come. We’re also making major investments in technology to better serve our students and our community. And just as important, we are doubling down on our commitment to meet students’ most basic needs — because no one can focus on their education if they are struggling to meet the essentials of food, housing, and security.

I am deeply grateful to our community for making these breakthroughs possible. Your support has given us the momentum to dream bigger, to innovate, and to remove barriers for students who deserve every opportunity to succeed.

Read more about the inspiring Run for Oregon Community College Students event at MHCC (page 5), where nearly all of the Oregon community college presidents donned running bibs in support of meeting basic student needs.

In this issue, you will also meet our newest Board of Education members, both of whom were student body presidents at MHCC and have now returned to their leadership roots. We look forward to breaking through to new heights with them at the helm.

We also invite you to explore how MHCC can help you achieve your own breakthroughs — whether that’s through a career change, a new community education class, or simply seeing the world in a new way.

Breakthrough is my personal word for the year, reflecting the spirit of this moment at MHCC and the opportunities ahead for all of us. Together, we are breaking through challenges, limitations, and expectations — building a brighter future for our students and our community.

With sincere appreciation,

Full Circle Leadership

Two Alumni Leaders Return to Serve on the MHCC Board of Education

For Larry Morgan and William Miller, both former Mt. Hood Community College student body presidents, it’s a full circle moment as they return to MHCC leadership as the newest elected members of the MHCC Board of Education.

Larry Morgan (Zone 1)

Troutdale native Larry Morgan knows firsthand how transformative an MHCC education can be. A proud graduate of the Integrated Media program, he credits his time at MHCC with changing the course of his life, equipping him with the skills, mentorship, and encouragement to lead.

“For me, this opportunity is about giving back – a promissory note to the community that invested in me as an 18-year-old and helped shape the person I am today,” Morgan says of his MHCC Board of Education appointment.

Since his days as a student, Morgan has stepped into leadership roles few could have imagined. He became the only student in Oregon chosen to work for Governor John Kitzhaber’s Post-Secondary Higher Education team, later won a seat on the Troutdale City Council, and today holds the Assistant City Manager role for the City of Gresham.

Through it all, Morgan has remained grounded in his MHCC roots. His focus is clear: making sure the same opportunities he had are available to every student who walks through MHCC’s doors.

“For me, this opportunity is about giving back – a promissory note to the community that invested in me as an 18-year-old and helped shape the person I am today.”

“I’ll advocate for keeping tuition within reach, expanding dual credit programs, and building strong partnerships to support scholarships and hands-on training for working adults and first-generation students,” he says. “Mt. Hood doesn’t just prepare students for the classroom. It prepares them for life. I know, because I lived it.”

William Miller (Zone 2)

From grassroots organizing to shaping policy at the local, state, and federal levels, William Miller has spent more than a decade fighting for equity, access, and systems change. Today, sitting on several national and state boards, he continues that work on behalf of communities too often left out of decisionmaking.

Miller says his decision to join the MHCC Board of Education comes from the same place: “MHCC deserves leaders who center those most impacted by the systems around themleaders who listen, build trust, and deliver results.”

A proud member of the Native American and LGBTQ+ communities, Miller understands the barriers many students

face because he has lived them. His leadership journey began right here at MHCC, where he served as Student Body President and Director of Diversity, championing student voice and institutional inclusion. A Ford Family Foundation Scholar, Miller went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science with a concentration in law and politics from Oregon State University.

Since then, Miller’s path has taken him far, currently serving as the Policy Director at the National Urban Indian Family Coalition (NUIFC). Before that, he held NAYA Action Fund Executive Director and Native American Youth and Family Center Government Affairs Manager roles.

“MHCC deserves leaders who center those most impacted by the systems around them – leaders who listen, build trust, and deliver results.”

Now, returning to his MHCC roots, Miller is determined to ensure that students today receive the same kind of support that once helped him thrive. His priorities are clear: expanding student resources, keeping education affordable, and shaping policies that reflect the diversity and strength of the MHCC community.

L et's Bond Building our future together.

A look at next steps for MHCC’s bond measure passage, and how you can be involved.

It’s an exciting time at MHCC as we embark on the next steps following our historic bond passage. We are committed to full transparency and regular communication as we go through this exciting transformation together. Here is a look at our major steps so far and where we are headed from here.

Certifcation & Bond Sale

MHCC sold its $136,455,000 voter-approved bond issue in August 2025. Thanks to an excellent Aa2 credit rating level from Moody’s Ratings, the district will receive approximately $10.9 million in additional proceeds that can be used on projects in accordance with the voter-approved ballot title. This is at no added expense to the taxpayers who passed the bond, and means investors pay more than the face value of the bond in exchange for receiving more favorable interest returns on their investments. In their rating summary, Moody’s highlighted the district’s large and diverse tax base, steadily increasing enrollment and retention, and strong financial management.

Project Spotlight:

Retractable Pool Cover

Construction has started on the retractable cover for MHCC’s 50-meter Olympic-sized outdoor pool, allowing it to be used and enjoyed year-round. This project was initiated in 2020 through grant dollars, and will be completed with bond funding.

The outdoor pool is closed during this process, while the indoor pool remains open. The outdoor pool will reopen in spring 2026. Stay tuned for an invite to the biggest pool party of the year!

Community Engagement

MHCC will be posting ongoing community updates and ways to engage via a dedicated bond website coming soon – and we encourage you to sign up for our new monthly community newsletter, where we will include bond updates in every issue.

Stepping Up for Student Success

A statewide show of unity at Mt. Hood Community College

Something remarkable happened this summer, in the early hours of an August morning. Nearly all of Oregon’s community college presidents gathered at MHCC in a powerful show of unity—showing up together around one urgent truth: students cannot succeed if their basic needs aren’t met.

The gathering was part of Clackamas Community College President Tim Cook’s incredible 1,500-mile run to all 17 of Oregon’s community colleges. His summer-long journey— running an average of 32 miles a day—was designed to raise awareness and funds for student basic needs while spotlighting the life-changing power of community colleges.

MHCC President Lisa Skari hosted the kick off to Dr. Cook’s final leg, joined by MHCC students, employees, and community members who came together for breakfast, inspiration, and the shared purpose to step up in support of meeting student basic needs.

“Here at Mt. Hood Community College, we are in a particularly striking landscape,” said Dr. Skari at the event. She described a district with the highest concentration of poverty in the state including 65 percent of K-12 students in East Multnomah County who qualify for the free lunch program.

“That’s why this ROCCS initiative is so important right now, and we give you our heartfelt support and gratitude today,

Tim,” Dr. Skari continued. “It’s a wonderful reason to get together and raise awareness within our community.”

“Our students are balancing jobs, families, and education while facing challenges no one should have to face alone,” said MHCC’s Director of Student Basic Needs Initiatives Bhaktirose Dawdy at the event. Dr. Skari and Dawdy were joined at the podium by Andrew Speer, Chair of MHCC’s Board of Education, and MHCC Basic Needs Navigator and student Alejandro Guzman Leon.

A special thank you to MHCC community partners AntFarm Café and Bakery, and MHCC Small Business Development Center graduate Just Tea PDX for providing food and drink.

The Challenges Students Face

The needs are real—and pressing—right here at MHCC:

• 2 out of 3 students struggle to meet basic needs

• 3 in 5 face housing insecurity

• 2 in 5 experience food insecurity

• 1 in 5 have experienced homelessness

• 4 in 5 rely on public assistance to pursue education

• 3 in 5 lack reliable access to essential technology

What brought you to MHCC?

After dropping out of my frst university, I moved to the PNW and drifted for a while. During the pandemic I stopped playing music, but later joined a local community band. Through that, I met Danielle Davey, MHCC s Director of Bands, who encouraged me to restart my education.

How has your experience at MHCC shaped you?

I ve found a supportive community here that helped me rediscover joy outside of work. The music program and close knit group of peers have brought balance and excitement back into my life.

What does being an MHCC student mean to you?

Returning to school was daunting, but it s taught me to advocate for myself and trust my path. Choosing education for myself gave me my frst real sense of direction.

What are your goals after graduation?

I plan to transfer to a four-year university to fnish my bachelor s in education and continue on the path toward teaching.

Favorite MHCC moment?

Playing in my saxophone quartet. I even arranged my frst piece for our spring concert. Performing it together, nerves and all, was a highlight and a reminder of why I love music.

MHCC in the Community

1. MHCC Heroes for Education Event

We thank all of our distinguished donors for their cumulative gifts to support our students and their success. We had the privilege of recognizing each of these donors with a certifcate and a spot on the Foundation s donor wall. We also proudly honored Soroptimist International of Gresham for its commitment to MHCC students and tireless advocacy for educational equity with this year s Heroes for Education award (pictured here).

2. Annual MHCC Foundation Celebration

Congratulations to Robin McGregor and Stan Hymel, who were both named as MHCC Foundation Emeritus Board members in honor of their outstanding contributions through a combined 66 years of dedicated service, leadership, and philanthropy in support of the Foundation s mission.

President Dr. Lisa Skari also presented Sue O Halloran with the Patron Saint Award. This is the college s highest honor. It recognizes Sue s extraordinary commitment to MHCC, our students, and the community. (Sue, pictured here with her family, who surprised her at the event.)

3. MHCC at the Sandy Music Fair & Feast

Seeing everyone s photos from the MHCC photo booth at the Sandy Music Fair & Feast was a blast! We re proud to have sponsored the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce s largest fundraising event this year and had so much fun celebrating with everyone this summer.

4. MHCC at Wood Village Nite Out

A huge thank you to City Manager Greg Dirks (pictured here with the Gresham Fire Department) and the City of Wood Village for a spectacular Nite Out! We had a wonderful time with fellow community members and organizations. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

5. MHCC Small Business and Entrepreneur Resource Fair

MHCC s Building Better Businesses Together Small Business and Entrepreneur Resource Fair was a huge success with an incredible turnout! We are grateful for the energy, insight, and generosity that state and local agencies brought to support our growing business community.

6. MHCC at Gresham SW Neighborhood Association Info Fair and Ice Cream Social This was a wonderful opportunity to meet members of our community and share everything MHCC has to ofer! A special shout out goes to the Gresham Breakfast Lions, who also had a table there, for being donors to the MHCC Foundation. Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat and picked up some swag.
