Dear Community Member,

As we approach the summer months, I am filled with excitement and gratitude for the progress our students have made these last few cold, rainy months, the golden summer sun a perfect metaphor for the rewarding feeling that comes with completing yet another school term at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC.)

I am thrilled to announce that we will be holding our first in-person commencement ceremony since 2019 on June 17, 2023. I cannot wait to celebrate this outstanding milestone with our students and their supporters. I am confident that their tenacity and work ethic will serve them well through whatever lies ahead for them in our rapidly-changing economy, whether that means transferring to a four-year institution or entering the workforce.

As we transition from one season to the next, I am excited to welcome our new and returning students for the upcoming summer term. Our students are our most valuable asset as their passion for learning and drive to better themselves fuels campus innovation and guides us as we seek out the best ways to continue serving them and our community as a whole. We are proud to continue offering a variety of educational, recreational, and health-related resources to our students and community members.

This publication has been restructured to highlight those resources and to promote many of the exciting events happening at MHCC, such as the reopening of our aquatic center, a new affordable swim program and summer theater productions. We are still offering many of the same community education courses, and summer is a wonderful time to learn a new skill or hobby, or pursue a new interest (rock climbing anyone?) Additionally, we aim to use this restructured publication as a way to shine a light on the inspiring stories of our students and faculty who embody the values and mission set forth by our institution.

I invite you to celebrate our amazing student body with me, as they continue to uplift and improve your community’s college and our community as a whole. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to MHCC – Your Community’s College!

Sincerely,

Mt. Hood Community College Pool Open for Summer Swimming

Swim lesson financial assistance available and several swim league events scheduled.

The pool at Mt. Hood Community College is open and ready for community members to enjoy this summer. The construction and repairs of Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) 25-yard indoor pool are complete and the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center has returned to full, normal function.

This project began in November

2022 and entailed repairing and replacing concrete gutters, sourcing and installing new viewing windows, replacing underwater lights, and replacing the original tile surrounding the pool deck with durable, nonslip epoxy. These repairs ensure a safe, usable, and sustainable pool space for many years to come.

“We’re excited to welcome back the community to our newly renovated aquatic center for some family-friendly summer fun,” said Dr. Kim Hyatt, dean of health, physical education,

athletics, aquatics, and recreation.

The 50-meter outdoor pool remains open for year-round use. The aquatic center regularly offers a variety of community swim lessons at the indoor learner pool and has recently expanded its lesson offerings following the reopening of the 25-yard indoor pool.

Besides unveiling a newly renovated pool, the aquatic center is excited to about a number of new initiatives and opportunities for our community members. One of those

initiatives is the Swim Lesson Inclusion Program (SLIP), which began in May 2023. SLIP assists low-income families in accessing MHCC swim lessons by providing a 50% discount on swim lessons to families using government assistance programs. SLIP is intended to provide increasingly diverse, equitable, and inclusive aquatic learning opportunities for everyone in the MHCC community. More information about participating or donating to this initiative can be found by contacting the aquatic center at 503-491-7243 or by emailing. The aquatic center also

partnered with several competitive swimming and water polo leagues to welcome back a full slate of swim meets and water polo tournaments at the pool this summer. Highlights include the National Veterans Wheelchair Games on July 8, 2023, and the Oregon Swimming Inc. Age Group Long Course Championships July 20-23, 2023. Check out a comprehensive list of all events held this summer at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center.

The aquatic center is hiring for several positions including lifeguard, instructor,

and customer service representative. Community members are encouraged to apply. Discounted lifeguard certification is available for interested candidates. Information on employment opportunities, public lap swim, aqua aerobics, events, and adaptive pool use opportunities can be found on the MHCC website. The aquatic center staff posts additional information, including construction and closure updates, on their Facebook and Instagram pages as well.

MHCC Seeks funds for new pool cover

Imagine being able to see international-level competitive swimmers compete at the Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) aquatic center pool even during the winter months. You could be standing in line with seven-time gold medalist Caeleb Dressel at Cafe Delirium. The dream of having a world-class aquatic center in Gresham is almost within reach.

MHCC continues to seek funding for a retractable pool cover for the 50-meter outdoor pool that would allow year-round event use which would put the aquatic center in a position to bid and compete to host competitive, international events.

The ability to host these events year-round would benefit MHCC

financially as well as support the local economy by filling up hotels, restaurants, stores, and more.

The dream of having a world-class aquatic center in Gresham is almost within reach.

When quotes for this project were initially sought in 2018, estimates came back for a total project cost of approximately $3 million. Following pandemiccaused closures and ensuing cost adjustments for construction, labor, and inflation, the new estimate for this project is approximately $6.7 million.

“We’re excited to welcome back the community to our newly renovated aquatic center for some family-friendly summer fun,” said Dr. Kim Hyatt, dean of health, physical education, athletics, aquatics, and recreation.

MHCC raised $2.4 million in grant funding and internal capital funds and is currently working with the district communications department to design a donor prospectus to inspire donors to close the $4.3 million funding gap.

Anyone who is interested in funding this project is asked to reach out to Dr. Kim Hyatt, dean of health, physical education, athletics, aquatics, and recreation at MHCC.

Game, Set, Match: MHCC Tennis and Racquetball Courts Open For Summer Fun

Attention all tennis, racquetball, and pickleball enthusiasts—as the weather heats up and you start looking for healthy and fun activities to enjoy summer, consider Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) on-campus tennis courts which are open for public use. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just looking to have some fun with friends, you’re invited to grab your racket and head to the courts for some exercise, competition, and fresh air.

You can also use the MHCC

tennis and racquetball courts to play pickleball. Pickleball is often described as a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong, and badminton and can be played on a tennis court or racquetball court. The number of U.S. pickleball players increased almost 40% between 2019 and 2021 according to a report from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, likely because this game is widely-considered easier than tennis while still offering a satisfying, competitive experience.

Courts are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis and there are scheduled, regular times that the courts are reserved by organizations. Visit the MHCC website for more information. If you would like to reserve a tennis court or racquetball court for your organization, email Dr. Kim Hyatt. See you on the courts!

Faces of Our Strategic Plan: The Lopez-Cortez Family

Before Luz del Carmen Lopez moved to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 22, a college education felt very out of reach. “I come from that culture where the women don’t study and so when I came to the United States [I thought] maybe I can make my dreams a reality,” said Lopez. Lopez’s dreams included becoming a teacher. At age 35 when she set out to make that happen, her friends told her about the Transiciones program at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC).

“When I entered the Transiciones program at Mt. Hood…I discovered that Transiciones is a pathway for my studies, my dreams, and my family,” said Lopez.

Transitions and its sister program, Transiciones, are career planning and college preparation programs available

at MHCC for those who may find it challenging to begin or continue with their college education. The program provides students the support they need to develop career goals, get comfortable with the college and its resources, make friends within a support network of professionals and peers, and develop time management skills and study strategies. Students also learn how to apply for scholarships and to develop lifelong career development skills. When Lopez started in the program she was introduced to Jenny Ruelas who at the time was a programs assistant and is now the Transiciones and Matched College Savings Program coordinator.

“[Lopez has] always been very organized and on top of her goals,” said Ruelas. Through Transiciones, Lopez

received help figuring out which classes to register for, how to sign up for the Federal WorkStudy program, and how to apply for scholarships.

“The money was a barrier,” said Lopez, “but it’s not impossible when you are determined, when you have goals, it’s not impossible.”

Lopez started her academic journey in English as a second language classes and eventually earned her associate degree in early childhood development in 2021. Her education helped her secure a position as a teacher at a local preschool.

“I love the kids and I feel happy…seeing their face when they [learn] something,” said Lopez. “I love when I support families when their child has some barriers like autism or problems with the language. That’s my favorite is that I can do

6 Mt. Hood Community College

something for their kids and their family.”

Because of her positive experience, Lopez encouraged her two daughters, Catherine Cortez and Caitlin Cortez to participate in the Transitions/ Transiciones program.

Catherine Cortez graduated from high school in 2018 and with the support and guidance of her mom, became the first person in her family to enroll in college immediately after high school. To her, it seemed like the right thing to do.

“Growing up I knew that my dad didn’t finish high school and my mom did finish high school but it took her a very long time to go back and finish college and I saw how difficult it was for her to kind of manage family and school and work,” said Cortez. “I also kind of wanted to set an example for my siblings…because I knew that my siblings would be looking up [to] that.”

When deciding which school to attend, Catherine Cortez followed in her mom’s footsteps.

“My mom was in the Transitions/Transiciones program a few years back and she recommended that I take that program. So, I joined the program in the fall of 2018,” said Catherine Cortez.

Catherine Cortez enrolled in the Transitions program and through that, was able to participate in the Federal

Work-Study program to help fund her education. Catherine Cortez said Transitions also helped her figure out courses to take and which career path was best suited for her interests and goals.

Catherine Cortez ultimately decided to pursue a degree in criminology and criminal justice. When she decided to transfer to Portland State University (PSU) to continue down her chosen career path, Transitions helped her with the transferring process as well.

been able to do it, that my sister has been able to do it, and it shows that if they can do it, I can do it, and so can anyone,” said Caitlin Cortez, “you just have to put in the work and not be afraid to reach out and have to believe in yourself.”

Caitlin shared that she has grown a lot in various ways since enrolling in classes and securing employment through the Federal Work-Study program.

“I’m definitely a shy person and I’ve gotten out of my comfort zone and out of my bubble,” said Caitlin Cortez, “I found out that I enjoy helping others.”

“MHCC has made a huge impact on me,” said Caitlin Cortez.

After graduating in December 2022 from PSU with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Catherine Cortez secured a position as a legal assistant at a Portland immigration law firm. “It’s going good, I’m learning a lot. I’m hoping to become an immigration lawyer after deciding on law school,” said Catherine Cortez.

Lopez’s other daughter Caitlin Cortez graduated from high school in 2020 and is currently studying at MHCC and is working toward a degree in general studies.

“I’ve seen that my mom has

The Lopez-Cortez family is a testament to the transformative power of education and the importance of support systems for those who may face challenges in pursuing their academic and career goals. Through the Transitions/ Transiciones program at MHCC, Luz del Carmen Lopez and her two daughters Catherine and Caitlin Cortez were able to overcome barriers and achieve their dreams of higher education and career success. By sharing their experiences and encouraging one another, the Lopez-Cortez family has shown that with determination, hard work, and a support network, goals that seem out of reach are attainable.

Auto Service and Maintenance Class

It’s a typical rainy, dreary Portland night and you’re left with a flat tire in torrential rain after hitting a pothole on Interstate 84. You could sit there and wait for AAA or a good Samaritan to help. But doesn’t it sound so much nicer to be able to quickly change your tire yourself for free as opposed to frantically searching Google for the nearest roadside assistance shop, waiting an hour or longer for them to arrive, and then paying upwards of $100 for their help?

Learning the basics of auto maintenance can be a valuable skill for anyone, but it’s a topic that many people go their whole lives without learning. That’s why Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) Auto Service

and Maintenance community education class is gaining popularity among locals who want to take control of their vehicle’s upkeep. In this twoday, hands-on course, students not only learn how to change a flat tire and jumpstart a dead battery but also gain the confidence to tackle a variety of other maintenance tasks and become more familiar with their vehicles. With a focus on safety and practical skills, this class is empowering students to be more self-sufficient and save money on expensive repairs. The savings don’t end there. According to Mechanic Advisor, the average auto mechanic marks up the cost of car parts anywhere from 25-50% and then charges service fees on

top of that. You could be saving yourself money every time you need to change a tire, change your air filter, or jumpstart a dead battery by performing these basic maintenance tasks yourself through knowledge acquired in our Auto Service and Maintenance class.

Students will learn how to change a tire, use a car jack, jump a car battery, check fluid levels, read maintenance menus, identify the parts of a car, and more.

8 Mt. Hood Community College
Director of Workforce, Apprenticeship and Community Education Dawn Loomis saw

the need for this class while attending driver’s ed with her son when she realized that there wasn’t a local class for community members to learn these helpful skills. Loomis then partnered with experienced mechanic Robert Cruikshank to develop this invaluable course. Cruikshank worked as a maintenance technician for General Motors dealerships for more than 40 years before joining MHCC’s Automotive Technology program as a mentor.

“The class covers very basic car maintenance skills that any new or inexperienced driver would find helpful,” said Cruikshank. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to know how to keep their car safe and functional for as long as possible and is open to all

community members. Students can enjoy hands-on learning with their own vehicles or with the vehicles available to work on in MHCC’s state-of-the-art automotive lab. Students will learn how to change a tire, use a car jack, jump a car battery, check fluid levels, read maintenance menus, identify the parts of a car, and more. In doing so, students will also save themselves unnecessary stress and hundreds of dollars by having the knowledge to successfully solve common car problems.

Although the course is a relatively new offering at MHCC, several attendees reported having a very positive experience. Here are just two of the positive remarks left on anonymous student

evaluations:

“Very grateful for this class. I feel less fearful and more empowered about my car’s basic functions. The hands-on practice was especially helpful.”

“Create a Part 2 to this course; I want to learn more!”

Whether you’re a new driver or someone who wants to become more self-sufficient, MHCC’s Auto Service and Maintenance class provides community members the opportunity to gain the knowledge and confidence they need to take control of their vehicle’s upkeep and extend the life of their vehicle through high-quality maintenance practices.

To apply for this class visit the MHCC continuing education website.
