This breed’s origin is shrouded in mystery. Some believe the birds were directly imported from China via ships; others believe they were bred within the US from other Asian breeds. Regardless of how - an enormous, stately, well-designed breed was born…or would it be hatched? Brahmas - named after the Brahmaputra River which lies in the Himalayas - are colossal birds. They have loose and fluffy feathering that runs all the way down to their toes. Their sheer size, feathered shanks, and small pea combs allow them to thrive in cooler climates. Hens lay consistently throughout the winter. They’re calm, making them a great choice for backyard flocks.

Plymouth Rocks are a hardy, old time, dual purpose breed with a friendly, even temperament. These birds are physically large with meaty bodies, and hens are quite good layers.

This breed is a popular choice among slow-growing meat producers for its size. They are also popular with backyard beginners for their personalities. When you think dark brown eggs, you think Marans. This breed originated from a French town named Marans. This breed has a V-shaped body that stands tall. These are large birds that lay a good number of eggs. However, their dual-purposed nature is not what they’re known for. They are prized for their rich, chocolate-colored eggs. This is an active breed that thrives in an environment where they can forage.
A Dutch breed known for its cold hardy, calm temperament. They are a curious and intelligent breed suited well for backyards. Welsummers have a single comb and have very different plumage from male to female.
Originating from Holland, this is a very cold - tolerant breed. They are a gorgeous burnt orange with thick black lacing throughout. With their calm and easygoing temperament, they are an excellent choice for your backyard.
Australorps, also known as ‘the Australian Orpingtons’; are an incredibly popular breed, and justifiably. They are calm, quiet, and are very good brown egg layers. These heavy-bodied birds are desirable for their dual-purpose nature; roosters are quite heavy with white skin, making an excellent traditional meat bird. The high-producing Australorp hen will often go broody. This is the bird you want in your flock if you’re a beginner. Orpingtons are known for their pet-like, docile nature. They’re sizeable and curvy birds with loose, fluffy feathering. Orpingtons are easy to handle - in fact, they often enjoy it! Hens often go broody but are good layers of brown eggs. They make outstanding mothers. The Buckeye is the only breed developed by a woman accepted into the APA. They were named ‘Buckeye’ in honor of their creator Nettie Metcalf’s home state of Ohio. She succeeded in creating a winter hardy bird with a higher yield of thigh, wing, and breast meat.

This rare and extremely attractive breed originated in Sussex County, England. When mature, their beautiful plumage is brownish red with feathers tipped in white. This variety combines beauty and utility which make them an excellent choice for both your backyard flock as well as a stunning show bird.

This breed was developed in Bielefeld, Germany, at the start of the 1970s. With many of the other chicken breeds, a lot of hysteria overtakes the reality of the chicken, but Bielefelders present true reason for the hype. You have a few characteristics that rank this chicken close to the top, such as: big and meaty carcasses, auto-sexing, gentle temperament, beautiful feathers, and laying of the large brown eggs.

A spirited, stylish, active bird which is exceedingly hardy. Its activity can even make it somewhat wild. They excel in a variety of conditions and housing systems.

Also known as ‘Easter Eggers’ because of the variety of colors they lay. They come in many different colors and sizes and have a good disposition. Many of these birds have muffs or beards and all have full tails. They are a great backyard bird but not recommended for showing.
Undoubtedly the most popular autosexing breed to date. This curious breed’s appearance varies between sexes. Roosters are a range of cream-and-slate-barring whereas the hen sports a small crest. She is two toned – largely silver with a toffee-colored breast.
When it comes to appearance, Olive Eggers can be a wildcard. Although typically black, brown, or blue, they can be virtually any color and/or muff and beard combination. Our Olive Eggers are f1, meaning a first generation cross.

Contrary to popular belief, eggshell color has no direct influence on nutritional value. In fact, all eggs start off white! A blue egg for example gets its color from oocyanin, which is delivered early in the formation process, therefore penetrates the whole shell. Brown eggs are colored from the compound protoporphyrin, which is added as the already formed shell passes through the oviduct. Because of the disparity of pigment delivery times, we can have green or olive egg shells – shells that have been exposed to both pigments!
Also known as the ‘rarest chicken on earth’ the Ayam Cemani is truly an exquisite bird. They are intensely black from their feathers to their organs. Ayam Cemanis originated from Java, Indonesia within the village of ‘cemani’ where ‘ayam’ means ‘chicken’. They resemble a gamebird in shape, light, and compact. Cemanis weigh only 4 - 5 lbs and lay cream-colored eggs.
We are always striving for the best breed representation possible, however we cannot guarantee pigment distribution in Cemanis. Uneven distribution is normally manifested in white toes, stray white feather(s), and/or purple or red combs. We can’t promise Cemanis will grow out to perfect breed representation because perfectly black chicks can develop these flaws into adulthood.

More than just for looks, these functional birds have been a barnyard staple for generations. The name Wyandotte comes from the Native American tribe Wyandottes who occupied the surrounding areas of Lake Ontario – modern day New York and Ontario, Canada. Given the climate they were developed in –it’s no wonder this breed is so cold hardy. They have deep, wide bodies covered in dense, close-fitting feathers to keep them warm; they also sport a small rose comb that is less susceptible to frostbite. Hens are generally docile and a good layer of brown eggs. Roosters are sometimes aggressive - making good protectors. The modern Wyandotte is adaptable, can succeed in confinement or a free-range setting, and is often labeled a dual-purpose, sustainable breed.
This slow-growing broiler is wellsuited for more natural - rearing methods, such as free-range or organic systems. They are active birds that enjoy being able to forage. Characteristics include yellow skin, shanks, and beaks along with mostly red feathering. A small percentage of Freedom Rangers can be tri-colored.

Crossing of purebred Cornish and White Rock hens produces this fine broiler. Cornish Cross are the most popular, fastest - growing and most efficient meat chicken on the market. They have large breast, thigh, and leg proportions. Their white feathers and yellow skin make for clean processing. We cannot overemphasize the importance of proper nutrition for successful results from our Cornish X Rock Cross chicks! The Mallard Drake is one of the most beautifully colored of all waterfowl. Mallards fly, but will usually stay at home if fed regularly. They are a wild bird that generally avoids human contact. Hens make very good mothers.

Guineas are fun, easy, and inexpensive to raise. Once started, they are excellent foragers, living on insects, seeds, and vegetation. They are super farmyard watchdogs, sounding an alarm anytime anything unusual occurs. They are purplish gray with small white spots.

Containment and Temperature - Start with clean quarters. Chicks need to be kept at 95°F for the first 10 days. This is extremely important, so it is essential that you use a thermometer. Decrease the temperature by 5°F each week thereafter. The ideal temperature for a 6-week-old bird is 70°F. The most common source of heat is a 250-watt bulb. We recommend a barrier or draft guard be placed around your brooder lamp. This contains your birds and keeps young chicks within a reasonable amount of space (.5 sq ft / bird) thus keeping them closer to the heat source. When decreasing temperature always consider the behavior of your chicks - if they are constantly huddling, they are likely too cold. If they’re evenly dispersed, moving around and eating and drinking, they are comfortable.
Litter - Provide a 2 to 4-inch depth of suitable litter. Pine shavings are ideal as they are absorbent, accessible and have enough texture for foot grip - yet too large to be eaten. Never use straw, newspaper, or any other slick surface as it could cause crippling leg issues.
Food and Water - Chicks must always have fresh food and water. Feed a quality medicated starter feed for the first 6-8 weeks; then switch to a grower feed. Feed choice into adulthood will vary by breed, purpose, etc. You can scatter a fine grit over the feed. Chicks may need direction to feed and water initially; we recommend dipping each bird’s beak in the water upon unboxing. Water should be lukewarm. Feed and water should be placed at a midpoint between the heat source and the barrier.

• Clean any equipment or materials associated with raising or caring for live poultry, such as cages, feed, and water containers, outside of the house.
• Don’t let children younger than 5 years of age, elderly persons, or people with weak immune systems handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other live poultry.
• Don’t let live poultry inside the house, in bathrooms, or especially in areas where food and/or drink is prepared, served, or stored such as kitchens or outdoor patios.
• Don’t snuggle or kiss the birds, touch your mouth, or eat or drink around live poultry.
