ATER shortages in and around Mthatha are forcing residents to dig deep into their own pockets to acquire this life-giving commodity.

With taps having run dry in several localities, residents now depend on water tank deliveries, or resort to hiring trucks to bring water back to where they live. In reaction to the water crisis, OR Tambo Municipal Manager, Tshaka Hlazo, said they had a broad plan to ensure constant water availability in the OR Tambo region. “We are running an R80 million project of replacing old pipes in areas like Fortgale, Khwezi, the Central Business District (CBD)

of Mthatha and some areas close to town. We want to change the old system to ensure the availability of water. This is why water cuts are being experienced in some areas. “We are appealing to residents to please remain patient. The pipe replacements have a long term solution as goal,” he said. According to him, they were also upgrading the Thornhill water supply in an endeavour to extract more water from the Mthatha Dam. Hlazo said a generator would also be installed at the Mthatha dam, to prevent power outages from influencing water supply. “We have started by installing big pipes in corridors like Mthatha Airport and Mhlahlane, followed by Mqanduli, Viedgesville and New Nkululekweni, to ease water distribution. “We had already bought three big generators for Thornhill to ensure water gets to eve-

rybody without interruptions. Now we have embarked on a regional water scheme route to accommodate the locations in deep rural areas,” said Hlazo. He said almost all the regional water schemes in the OR Tambo region were in an operational state, excluding Stage 27, which supplies water to some villages in Ngqeleni. In the Ngquza Hill municipality, the Flagstaff regional water scheme – which supplies water to Flagstaff and some parts of Lusikisiki – is now being constructed and work has already started on the Port St Johns water scheme. “The Mvumelwano, Sidwadweni and Culunca regional water supply systems are working. The rest of Nyandeni’s regional schemes are up and running. We have hired trucks to supply water in areas where water shortages are being experienced,” said Hlazo.
