never-worn-before pair of jeans or a t-shirt. And the best part is, of course, the savings that come with that choice of purchase.

On the other side of the store is everything you’ll probably ever want. Kitchen utensils to dinner sets, both new and used, can be found in shelves, row upon row. Some of the deals are

so good that you might even consider gifting your soon-to-be-married friends something you picked up from one of these sections.

Mazatlan is the winner of our coveted Best Mexican category, and it should come at no surprise. Including all sorts of fine mexican cuisine, great atmosphere that helps you feel right at home, and some great deals across the board, this restaurant has been killing it for a while now.

Mazatlan has a lively atmosphere, and it is always packed full of people.

The building is extremely small, though, so it can get cramped quickly to the point where you can’t walk around the place easily without bumping into someone. This may sound off putting at first, but once you actually get acclimatized, it doesn’t bother you.

Caribou Coffee is a haven for stressed-out students in need of caffeine

Every now and then overworked and tired students need that quick pick-me-up to help them get through the early morning struggle and be able to retain the information they’ll be getting during the day.

In comes Caribou who has been a beacon of caffeine hope to many students and faculty looking for a delicious cup of joe to start the day off good.

Located on the corner of Warren and Stadium Road and adjacent to the Taylor Center, Caribou has been the popular spot for students to go to before and after class to either have a nice cup of coffee or to hang out with friends by the relaxing lounge area.

When asked what sets Caribou apart from other shops, one of the managers states, “We’re busy, but we have fun with it and we love what we do.”

For a coffee shop to be so close to campus, the shop gets dozens of customers every hour, but the workers there take each day with a smile on their face.

Weggy’s legendary and filling breakfast once again reigns supreme

It shouldn’t be surprising that Weggy’s was voted the Best Breakfast Award in this year’s Student Choice Awards. Any dining establishment whose menu starts out with “Steak n’ Eggs” has definitely done something right.

Students favor Weggy’s for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being its location. Located in University Square, the diner is perfectly primed to receive hungry students at any hour of the day, and especially on weekend mornings and evenings.

Another reason for the restaurant’s win are its prices. The most expensive item on the breakfast menu is just under thirteen dollars, with many of its items being under ten dollars.

That’s quite a deal for students who want to dine out on a budget, as well as anyone else who wants a good meal that doesn’t break the bank. No item on any of the menus exceeds thirteen dollars in price.

But one theme is common among students who go to Weggy’s on the regular: They love the restaurant’s breakfast food, the very category for which it won an award both this year and last. “Their breakfast is really good.” said Vincent McKnight, a student at Minnesota State University who frequently patronizes the restaurant. “They have omelets, platters with eggs, hash browns, pancakes, french toast, sausage and bacon.”

There’s plenty of other items on the menu as well, including no fewer than five different kinds of Eggs Benedict dishes.

McKnight personally recommends the Paul Bunyan Snack Platter, which is his favorite item on the breakfast menu. The platter features three eggs, three slices of

bacon, three sausage links, two sausage patties, accompanied by hash browns and toast. “It’s a little bit bigger, so you’d better be hungry.”

McKnight said. You can also add a pancake to the platter if so inclined.

about this already or you have made a mental note of it.

All in all, Mazatlan is a clear choice for best Mexican in Mankato. If you have a hankering for anything from burritos to quesadillas, it should be the first shot.

Buffalo Wild Wings wins our Best Wings category yet again, as it has in years previous.

It’s to be expected, as the wings haven’t declined in quality and not much is around in terms of competition. This in no way means the wings are poor, however.

Quite the opposite is true, as many of the flavors are extremely appealing and the quality of chicken is pretty top notch. The award is, in other words, very deserved.

Most wing joints typically come with around four or five different sauce options.

At Buffalo Wild Wings, the options are more than triple that. You can have any number of spicy, sweet, or dry rub wings. Often times

all three or a combo of two are available as well.

Across the board, the sauces are really well done, and over a good choice no matter what flavor you choose.

The chicken itself tastes

great and is pretty well sized, never being overly large causing you to rethink life itself, and not too small that it would make you contemplate running away to a whole new town, full of bigger, more impressive

Jersey Mike’s is our winner of the Best Sub category this year! Personally, this feels very deserving to me as Jersey Mike’s has, without a doubt, the best subs in all of Mankato, easy.

They offer both cold subs and hot subs. The meat is of high quality, the bread is great, and the special sauces are amazing. It may be slightly more expensive,

buck or so for the amazing flavor and ample amount of

The meats available range greatly, so there is a sub for anyone here. If you don’t care for meat, you can always try one of the non-meat subs, as they offer great veggie sub options, as well. Their produce is also grown and shipped locally, as well, so you know what they’re giving you is fresh and flavorful.

The breading is well sized, not being so big as to overpower the rest of the sandwich but not so small as to leave you wishing for more.

The spices found here set the sub apart from others as they turn it from a run of the mill sub into this amazing, taste journey that you take your buds on. You honestly might leave wishing you

had bought another for another day, as having any other lunch seems to pale in comparison to this behemoth.

If you’re of-age, the bars can be the best place to go on the weekends. They’re fun, inviting, and you can meet all sorts of new people on a night out. Mankato, Minnesota has a wide variety of bars to choose from, but there is one that stands out from the rest.

Rounders sits between Blue Bricks and Underground on S. Front St. in Mankato and is relatively new. The bar opened its doors in 2009 and has been a popular choice of bar for college students ever since.

Rounders has a large variety of liquor and beer, with 12 on tap and over 50 bottle choices. There’s also a large selection of other

alcoholic drinks to choose from, whether you’re just looking to sip on a vodka cran, or you’re ready to slurp down an adios. Not only

that, but they also serve burgers, wings, steaks, and so much more.

The bar has specials, as well. If you’re anything like

me and you’re just looking for a quiet night out, you can go during the week for their Tuesday 55 cent wings or their Wednesday 9.95 sirloin. Thursday nights; they also have all pasta for 8.95.

They’ve also got great happy hour deals all week.

You can get a jumbo margarita for only four bucks, two-dollar domestic bottles or rail drinks, and domestic tap beer for only 2.75. Happy hour goes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday through Saturday. You can look at their full menu online or in person at the bar.

The restaurants website describes itself as serving, “authentic Japanese food, main dished include sushi, sashimi, hibachi, Japanese noodles. Our appetizers are unique and come with a variety of crunchy shrimp, etc.”

The store is located 1901 Madison Ave, right next to Old Navy. The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and then open Friday through Sunday with varying times.

Minnesota State University, Mankato, student Brianna Duran recommends the restaurant, “I’m not a huge sushi fan, but it was made fresh and tasted super good!” Duran also suggests going after 8 p.m as it is half off.

The restaurant also offers lunch specials. One being their Maki Lunch where you can get any two rolls for 8.85 or any three rolls for 11.95. For this lunch special there are 30 rolls to choose from. A common favorite being the California

roll. Besides the basic sushi rolls, chef’s special rolls are available. The cheapest is 11.95 and is called sweetheart roll. It includes tuna, salmon and avocado with sprinkles of red and black tobiko rolled in. The most expensive roll being

the king crab roll priced at 14.50.

If you are not a fan of sushi the restaurant offers kitchen entrées that have a variety of options. Noodles, katsu and teriyaki are all categories of options.

The restaurant also boasts

‘Best Apartment Complex’ goes to College Town, giving students affordable leases and amazing amenities

College Town is the only student housing development in Mankato that offers houses and not apartments to rent. Because of this unique opportunity, many students chose to live in College Town and every year the houses quickly fill with new renters, so it does not come as a surprise that College Town was picked as students’ favorite place to live in Mankato.

Applebee’s Bar and Grill in Mankato, Minnesota boasts of the best happy hour deals for the Mankato locals. This US chain restaurant has been around since 1990, offering affordable and good food for friends, family or coworkers to dine at.

Applebee’s offers a lot of great deals and a happy hour discount. This month of February they are offering a dollar hurricane cocktail. This drink is a mixture of rum, passion fruit, orange, black cherry and lime flavor, for just 1 dollar. This deal is a good way to chill after a long work or school day and at the same time not break your bank account.

Their happy hour runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week. Around this time their drink specials also go for 50 percent off.

They also offer happy hour menu towards selected appetizers with 50 percent off. These appetizers include Mozzarella Sticks, Boneless Buffalo Wings, Spinach and Artichoke Dip, Onion Rings, Chicken Wonton Tacos, and the Cheese Quesadillas.

They also offer a combo deal which is called “2 for 22”, where one can get a full size order of two entrees and one appetizer for just 22 dollars. This is also a great deal if you’re not looking to spend too much.

With all these deals it is no wonder Applebee’s was chosen as the best happy hour restaurant here in Mankato.

Solomon Pelumi, a junior nursing student at Minnesota State University, Mankato said their ribs was her favorite part of the menu and that it was affordable.

Another student here at MNSU, Grace Akinsanya, said, “Applebee’s is one of my favorite American

The “chillout” experience becomes overbearing when you are in the former’s establishment, but when you enter the latter’s, it feels more authentic in a way.

I attribute this to the fact that the workers are not pushing themselves to extremes like they do at Jimmy John’s, and rather they take time to make sure the sub is of immaculate quality.That’s

not to say they are slow, as things proceed faster than they would at a Subway for example.

All in all, it is easy to see why Jersey Mike’s won Best Sub. If you haven’t visited yet, take this as a hint to make your way over at the soonest possible meal time. You won’t regret it.
