Virus Vaccine Shows Success in US Tests A second experimental COVID-19 vaccine — this one from Moderna Inc. — yielded extraordinarily strong early results Monday, another badly needed dose of hope as the pandemic enters a terrible new phase. Moderna said its vaccine appears to be 94.5% effective, according to preliminary data from an ongoing study. A week ago, competitor Pfizer Inc. announced its own vaccine looked 90% effective — news that puts both companies on track to seek permission within weeks for emergency use in the U.S. The results are “truly striking,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious-diseases expert. “The vaccines that we’re talking about, and vaccines to come, are really the light at the end of the tunnel.” A vaccine can’t come fast enough, as virus cases topped 11 million in the U.S. over the weekend — 1 million of them recorded in just the past week — and governors and mayors are ratcheting up restrictions ahead of Thanksgiving. The outbreak has killed more than 1.3 million people worldwide, over 246,000 of them in the U.S. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla tweeted that he was thrilled at Moderna’s news.

As our fall semester at Minnesota State University, Mankato is coming to an end, the beginning of winter sports are just around the corner. The women’s hockey team will begin their long-awaited season on Friday, November 20 at 6:07 p.m., and Saturday, November 21 at 3:07 p.m. when they host the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The Mavericks look to take their first win against the Bulldogs since 2016 in these home-game matchups.

Following this, the men’s hockey team will be traveling to Bemidji State University in an exciting matchup between two of the top three ranked WCHA teams. The games that were originally scheduled for November 20 and 21, have now been moved to Sunday, November 22 and Monday, November 23. The games will start at 5:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively. MNSU’s Athletic Department posted on Monday morning the new rules and regulations for hockey game attendance. As noted in their statement, “With rising COVID-19 case rates, no fans will be admitted for home

men’s and women’s hockey games scheduled through the end of the 2020 calendar year.” Despite the lack of a live crowd, fans will be able to watch the games online through FloHockey with a subscription, or they can listen to home games on the radio with KTOE 1420-AM. Women’s basketball starts off their season right as the New Year eclipses, when they take on Bemidji State University on January 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Taylor Center.

This week, the Minnesota State University, Mankato Student Events Team will put on the Maverick Talent Contest. This contest is looking for any bands, singers, dancers, jugglers and more who wish to show off their skills to the campus community. Although video submissions have closed, the video crew will start filming the top 10 winners for the live stream 7 p.m. Thursday. The link to the live stream can be found on the Student Events Team website and Facebook page. In the past, the Student Events Team has put on numerous events around campus, including drivein movies, carnivals and homecoming festivities. The team has never hosted an event like this, but this won’t stop them from helping engage students.. Students in the showcase round will receive a time slot for filming earlier in the week, with the live stream airing Thursday. Filming takes place in Ostrander Auditorium, which will allow performers to utilize amenities such as bright lighting, a large stage and a good sound system. The film crew will help each participant in order to ensure a great quality video for the live stream. “We are filming the acts beforehand since we can’t have all of the acts in the same room. This way, we can follow COVID-19 restrictions while still having fun and putting on a good show,” said Concert Company Chair William Keebler. Along with these social-distancing guidelines, everyone will be required to wear a face mask, unless they are performing.
