MSU among the finalists to host Division II women’s elite eight SAM WILMES News Editor Minnesota State University is in the running to host the Division II Women’s Basketball Elite eight in the next four years, following an announcement by the NCAA. Host site finalists for the final round of nearly all of the NCAA’s 2014-2018 championship seasons were announced last Wednesday.

were responsible for MNSU’s finalist designation. The committees, made up of coaches and administrators from NCAA member schools and conferences, selected the finalists out of an original group of 1,948 offers.

The final decision will be made by the committees, then approved by the acceptable divisional championship cabinets and committees, then announced on a webcast broadcast at NCAA. com, on December 11th.

According to a University press release, to Athletic Director Kevin Buisman, this only affirms the Bresnan Center’s premier position as a Division II facility.

“Taylor Center’s Bresnan Arena is one of the finest facilities in NCAA Division II and hosting the Elite 8 women’s tournament would provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase Greater Mankato, Minnesota State, and the Maverick athletic program,” Buisman said.

“We think this is a great opportunity,” Buisman said.

While Buisman said there probably wouldn’t be a lot of direct financial assistance to the university, a positive economic impact would be made to the community at large, mainly due to the economic boom local restaurants and hotels would see.

“We are hopeful that our previous experience, outstanding facilities, and a tremendous community will prove to be just the right combination when the final host site selections are announced in December.”

“We are thrilled to be considered one of five finalists for this

prestigious national championship event,” Buisman continued.

According to Buisman, a main impact the university would feel is through the notoriety of a nationally televised event on campus exposing the university to needed publicity and spotlighting the University’s widely regarded facilities.

Buisman admits to feeling the anxiety and anticipation that is normal when getting ready for a big decision.

“We’re anxious for the announcement to be made,” Buisman said.“We’re very hopeful that the NCAA will name us when it decides in December.”

Four other cities are listed along with Mankato as possible hosts for the Division II Women’s basketball championship, including Louisville, Kentucky, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Columbus Ohio, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There have been many championships hosted at MNSU, including Wrestling National Championships in 1966 and 1968, men’s gymnastics in 1970, the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship in 2004, and the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2008 and 2012.

The Center of Academic success provides the help many need The center provides help for traditional and non-traditional students.

MIKELL MELIUS Staff Writer The Center for Academic Success provides numerous services for students here at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

They strive to help students succeed in their studies through academic advising, providing placement testing and helping students build effective study skills. While there are many areas the Center for Academic

Success covers, their Tutoring Center is an amazing resource for students seeking academic help.

“I come with questions and they all get answered by the time I leave,” says Amanda Peters, an Elementary Education major. This quote is written on a poster advertising the Center for Academic Success, a resource that Minnesota State University, Mankato offers its students.

“It’s a good place to go to fin-

ish homework and get help with problems you are struggling with,” said Kyle Krahenbuhl, a Manufacturing Engineering major, for another poster advertising the Center.

Located in the lower level of Memorial Library, ML 125, the Tutoring Center has trained tutors for various subjects, undergraduate and graduate. Tutors can assist with writing, languages, math and science, just to name a few. With specialized

experience in subjects, a tutor will have the acquired knowledge to help with your specific questions.

So why go get help at the Tutoring Center? Why not just get help from a friend? “It gives students direction and connects them so they can study together,” said Anna Haywood, an Anatomy and Biology 101 tutor for the Center. “Tutors might be a little more approachable.” Haywood just started working at the Center this semester and thoroughly enjoys it. “It reinforces the topics for me,” she said. “When I teach it to someone else it helps me as well.”

The Center is always looking for new tutors. In order to become a tutor you must meet some qualifications, including having a 3.0 GPA, having an A in the class you wish to tutor about and obtaining a faculty recommendation.

Since the Tutoring Center is a student-centered facility, the responsibilities of a trained tutor are important. Giving students seeking help the answers they

need is the Center’s number one priority, so providing adequate tutors is a must.

Online tutoring is another service that is available to students. This new service is handy for individuals who need the help the Tutoring service provides, but may not be on campus often or may have to drive a long distance for class. The criteria for online tutors is the same for on-campus tutors, so students seeking online help will still be assisted from a trained and knowledgeable tutor.

The Tutoring Center is open 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Thursday and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Friday.

While you can walk in at any time during the Center’s hours and receive assistance, appointments can also be set up.

To check-in, all you need is a valid MavCard and the Center is always free for all Minnesota State Mankato students.

Maine candidate for governor announces he’s gay Amidst rumors and speculation, the 58-year-old announced his sexual orientation the year before the Maine Gubernatorial race.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Rep. Mike Michaud had endured more than a dozen elections without anyone questioning his sexuality. Now everyone knows the Maine congressman is gay — including his mother.

The 58-year-old Michaud said Monday that he told his mom that he was gay just hours before he released an op-ed in which he came out publicly. He said he wrote the piece to end “whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls” that were dogging his gubernatorial campaign.

“It was a difficult decision to tell my sister and my mother,” Michaud said in his Portland campaign office hours after he released an op-ed. His mother,

sister and five other siblings said through his campaign staff that they didn’t want to be interviewed.

The announcement lifts the profile of a three-way race in which the six-term congressman and former paper mill worker is running close in the polls with Gov. Paul LePage, the Republican incumbent.

Also in the race is wealthy independent Eliot Cutler.

But the ramifications were unclear. Maine approved gay marriage last year.

Michaud’s acknowledgement that he’s gay could mean big contributions from gay rights groups. It also could win over some liberal voters concerned about his “blue dog” image and votes on abortion.

But it also could cost him the votes of some socially conservative supporters.

“It makes things more interesting. There’s no doubt about that,” said Mark Brewer, a political science professor at the University of Maine.

With Michaud’s announcement, there are now seven members of the U.S. House who are openly gay, along with one member of the U.S. Senate. There are no openly gay governors.

Michaud’s coming out elicited statements of support.

“We applaud Congressman Michaud and look forward to working with him in the future,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, adding

that “his example will promote understanding and show the importance of being open and honest about who you are.”

By nature, Michaud said he doesn’t like talking about himself. Quiet and unassuming, he worked for more than 29 years in the Great Northern Paper Mill in East Millinocket, where his father and grandfather worked. He keeps his lunch box in his office as a reminder.

He said the decision to announce that he was gay was not easy. He told his mother and sister on Sunday as his staff was preparing to release his op-ed to The Associated Press and two newspapers.

“I ran for office 17 times and it’s never been an issue. However, someone or some group definitely tried to make it an issue in this campaign, and I decided to put it right out there on the table,” he told the AP. Cutler’s campaign denied any involvement in dirty tricks and said Michaud’s disclosure should have no bearing on the race. LePage’s campaign declined to comment.

MaryEllen FitzGerald, a pollster from Critical Insights in Portland, said she doubted

that Michaud’s announcement would have a big impact on the race for governor. People are more concerned about the economy and health care, she added.

“He is a politician who has been in the public eye for a significant amount of time. He has a track record that people can judge him on, and I don’t think his sexual orientation is generally going to be a factor,” FitzGerald said. “Because he’s a known entity, I don’t think this is going to change opinions of him.”

Michaud, for his part, said there’s a sense of relief.

But he remains a private person. He said he hopes his opponents will respect his decision to go public, and that they’ll join him in waging a positive campaign that focuses on issues.

“My personal life has never factored into how I do my job, whether I was working in the mill for over 29 years, whether it was during my time in the Legislature or as a member of Congress. My personal life never factored into it, and it won’t factor into how I’d be governor,” he said.

The Boston Bombings: six months later PRATAKSHYA BHANDARI Staff Writer It was a little after 2 p.m. on April 15th, 2013. I had just gotten back to work from lunch when I received a notification on my phone that the Green Line had shut down due to police activity. In a city like Boston, neither delayed trains nor police activity were unusual so I went on with business as usual. Soon after, sirens started blaring. One after another, emergency vehicles raced through the street below my window. My first guess was that the Green Line had been in an accident again, which was also not unusual in Boston. It was only when I scrolled through

Facebook a few minutes later that I finally put the pieces together; it wasn’t an accident. It was a bomb that had exploded in the city that I adored. It had happened at the Boston Marathon that I might have attended, had it not been on a Monday.

It was surreal. I had never been so close to terror before. As panic gripped the city, it seemed like the world around me had come to a screeching halt. We were all collectively thinking but not asking questions. How safe was it to go outside? How safe was it to stay inside? What about the trains? How many bombs were still out there? Was it the kind that could blow up an entire city? How was this day going to end, that had started so much like every other day?

Six months later, a record breaking number of participants at the New York City Marathon yesterday proved that terror can only take away so much before we decide to push away our fears and run again. Terror might change the way we casually walk up to a marathon and cheer for loved ones. It might make us more aware of agitations; it might no longer be normal for us to carry a backpack to a marathon.

It might never be the same again because in the long history of marathons, this one shook us to the core. However, as was evident in the NYC marathon, for every bit of apprehension that is forced into us, we come out just as resilient and determined to fight back.

“It is not fun to come here and be checked when you’re coming in, but it is something that’s a wakeup call that we live in a world that is going somewhere that we don’t like. But as runners, all I can say is terrorists are doing the wrong thing to try to attack the runners because we will run more and run more and more to prove them wrong. They will never defeat us. They will never intimidate us. They are targeting the wrong group of people”, Korir said.

Amid extremely heightened security, Kenya’s Priscah Jeptoo won the women’s race while Geoffrey Mutai, also from Kenya, won the Men’s race. For some runners returning to finish their unfinished Boston run was a victory that couldn’t be matched to any prize. For many first- time runners, it was a test of mental endurance. For others, it was simply a matter of returning, even if it meant passing through metal detectors and carrying clear backpacks. For a few, it was a painful reminder of something that was lost.

As for me, overwhelmed with paranoia that the trains might be next, I took the bus home like many others did on that day. I remember, sometime in the following days, being very scared of going into the subway. Then, over the next few days, a wish took over the fear, a wish to be back in Boston, just in time for the marathon next year.

New Mexico Looking at jury to decide Halloween in a if death new, old way penalty is an

Recognizing the tradition of Halloween can reveal the real meaning of the unique holiday.

MIKELL MELIUS Staff Writer My Halloween weekend was, I’m sure, like a lot of other students’ Halloween weekends. I planned a costume to wear with my four other roommates. We scrounged together the least expensive items we could find in order to make our unique, homemade Girl Scout costumes. When Thursday rolled around we threw a party, drank and had a great time talking about it the next day over our post-party Perkins breakfast. I tend to think this was the same agenda for many a college student.

As the rest of my weekend unfolded and I found myself watching movies still playing on ABC Family for the Halloween season, I started thinking about the different aspects of Halloween. This wasn’t the first time I had thought of Halloween in a different light.

I’ve known the origin of the holiday and what it used to be, but I’ve been so wrapped up in how we celebrate Hallow-

een now and my own personal plans, usually consisting of what my costume will be and where I will be partying, that I haven’t thought about it in a while. Halloween used to be the evening before celebrating the dead. It was All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve; a time to celebrate the ones you’ve lost.

The three days combined can be referred to as Hallowmas; October 31, All Hallows’ Eve, November 1, All Saints’ Day, and November 2, All Souls’ Day. While this old holiday has religious roots stemming from Christianity, it can still set an example for all people on another way to celebrate Halloween, a way to give it meaning.

There are many different ways people celebrated Hallowmas. In some parts of Britain, people would hold candlelit vigils and ring church bells in memory of the dead.

In rural England, families would gather on hills with one member holding a pitchfork with burning straw on

the end. The rest of the family would gather around praying for friends and family who had passed away until the flame went out.

One tradition that is still celebrated in some countries is setting out large meals on relatives graves on All Hallows’ Eve so it will be there for All Saints’ Day. Now, I’m not saying that we all should give up the Halloween we know. I love carving pumpkins, picking out a costume and celebrating with friends, not to mention the joy I got from trick-or-treating as a kid, but maybe we all can incorporate a new way of celebrating. We can take a moment, a night, to remember those who are no longer with us. Appreciating what we have and those who helped us get to where we are is something everyone, including myself, could do more of. We can use this Halloween holiday, dripping with old tradition and spirituality, as more than another excuse to party.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — John McCluskey is not the vicious pit bull or three-time loser that prosecutors have made him out to be, according to his defense attorneys. Rather, they said Monday that the Arizona inmate convicted of killing an Oklahoma couple while on the run in New Mexico is a remorseful animal lover unable to properly reason because of his abusive childhood and brain defects.

“Like all of us in this room, he is a human being,” attorney Teri Duncan said in closing arguments in the first phase of McCluskey’s sentencing trial in federal court.

“With flaws, but a human being nonetheless.”

Duncan also quoted one of her favorite childhood books, “Bless Me, Ultima,” where one of the characters teaches that “when you understand, you see it is not evil.”

She said jurors should spare McCluskey the death penalty not of out of sympathy, but out of understanding of how his brain works and his inability to control

his impulses.

Prosecutor Michael Warbel, however, argued that McCluskey was thinking clearly when he planned his escape from prison and the resulting violent rampage that included the carjacking and murders of Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh, Okla., as they passed through New Mexico in August 2010 on an annual camping trip to Colorado.

“We are talking about what he intended when he pointed that gun at Gary Haas and shot him in the head. We are talking about what he intended when he pointed that gun at Linda Haas and pulled the trigger twice,” Warbel said.

Warbel reminded jurors that in the first phase of the sentencing trial they are simply deciding whether McCluskey is eligible for the death penalty, not whether to impose it. It’s a fact-finding exercise, not an emotional one, the prosecutor said.

McCluskey, 48, was convicted by the same jury on Oct. 7 of 20 counts of aggravated murder, carjacking and other charges.

MSU professor to speak on the crisis engulfing Egypt Native of Egypt to discuss the whirlwind of crises in Egypt.

RYAN BERNDT Staff Writer Professor Emeritus Dr. Hamed Sallam will be offering students and community members a chance to learn more about Egypt’s current political situation with his lecture, which will be held on Wednesday from 3:30 – 4:30pm in the Heritage room (located in the CSU).

The lecture is presented by the Kessel Peace Institute for the Study of Peace and Change (KISPC); an organization that is part of MNSU’s College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.

The Kessel Peace Institute has deep roots in Mankato’s history.

The institute is named after Abbas Kessel, a former professor at MNSU of 19 years, and a life long peace activist. Kessel gained recognition in 1970 for defusing a potentially violent situation during a demonstration against the Vietnam War that was held on campus.

Dr. Sallam, who was born in Egypt and frequently visits the country, will bring his unique perspective to the table on the situation occurring in his home country. Dr. Sallam had previously been a Professor in the Department of Computer Information Science at MNSU, as well as having held other positions in different institutions.

“I’ve been watching the situation in Egypt for a while now.”

Cameron Zielinski explained. “I

think it’s important to have someone familiar with the country to speak about it. People who were there bring more than just facts, they bring emotion, which is hard to put in a textbook.”

After enormous protests by the Egyptian people, their former president, Mohammed Morsi, was ousted out of power by the military. Before Morsi, however, there was Hosni Mubarak.

Mubarak was also ousted and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in August due to health reasons.

Mubarak served as President of Egypt for thirty years. As time went on, Mubarak grew more and more authoritarian and was often compared to a modern day Pharaoh by media outlets. As police brutality and political censorship became more widespread and Mubarak won the 2011 elections, citizens utilized social media like Twitter form up and protest.

846 people were killed during the protests, with 6,467 more wounded. Mohamed Morsi was elected after, but proved widely unpopular and faced similar protests. Morsi granted himself almost unlimited powers while in office, in order to “protect” the nation from problems of the old regime.

After widespread protests, the military stepped in and gave him the ultimatum of bowing to the people’s wants or be ousted in two days. Morsi argued against the proposed change, and was

promptly removed from office in a coup d’état.

With an interim government set in place by the military, Egypt faces a future that, with hardwork

and positivity, could be very bright.

Dr. Hamed Sallam will bring his own insights into Egypt’s future development and the pros-

pects for democracy and peace.

Students who are interested in the situation and would like to know more should attend the lecture.

Ciancia is charged with murder of a federal officer and committing violence at an international airport, charges that could qualify him for the death penalty. It was not immediately clear when he would make a first court appearance given his medical condition.

In court documents and interviews, authorities spelled out a chilling chain of events, saying Ciancia walked into the airport’s Terminal 3, pulled the assault rifle from his duffel bag and fired repeatedly at 39-yearold TSA officer Gerardo I. Hernandez. He went up an escalator, turned back to see Hernandez move and returned to shoot him again, according to surveillance video reviewed by investigators.

He then fired on two other uniformed TSA employees and an airline passenger, who all were wounded, as he moved methodically through the security checkpoint to the passenger gate area before airport police shot him as panicked travelers hid in stores and restaurants.

It wasn’t clear why Ciancia targeted TSA officers, but what he left behind indicated he was willing to kill any of them who crossed his path, authorities revealed.

The letter in his duffel bag refers to how Ciancia believed his constitutional rights were being violated by TSA searches and that he’s a “pissed-off patriot,” upset at former Department of Homeland Security Secretary

“Black, white, yellow, brown, I don’t discriminate,” the note read, according to a paraphrase by a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

The screed mentioned “fiat currency” and “NWO,” possible references to the New World Order, a conspiracy theory that foresees a totalitarian one-world government.

The letter also talked about “how easy it is to get a gun into the airport,” the law enforcement official said.

When searched, the suspect had five 30-round magazines, and his bag contained hundreds more rounds in boxes.

The FBI was still looking into Ciancia’s past, but investigators said they had not found evidence of previous crimes or any run-ins with the TSA. They said he had never applied for a job with the agency.

Rep. Michael McCaul, RTexas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday that Ciancia’s actions show how difficult it is to protect travelers at a massive airport such as LAX. The terminals are open and easily accessible to thousands of people who arrive at large sliding glass doors via a broad ring road that fronts the facility and is designed to move people along quickly.

“It’s like a shopping mall outside the perimeter,” McCaul said.

TSA Administrator John Pistole said the agency will need to work with each airport’s police agency “to see how we’ll go about in providing the best possible security.”

On Monday, Ciancia’s New Jersey relatives offered sympathy to the family of the slain security officer and their hopes for the recovery of other victims.

The attorney for the Pennsville, N.J., family, John Jordan, declined to take questions.

The TSA said the other two

officers wounded in the attack — James Speer, 54, and Tony Grigsby, 36 — were released from the hospital.

Brian Ludmer, a high school teacher, remained hospitalized.

He has to undergo at least one more surgery on his leg and extensive physical therapy, hospital officials said Monday, but his condition was upgraded from fair to good.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The man accused of opening fire at Los Angeles International Airport, shooting employees and terrorizing travelers, accomplished two of his goals, according to authorities: killing a Transportation Security Administration officer and showing how easy it is to get a gun into an airport.

The deadly rampage left investigators to piece together what motivated Paul Ciancia’s hatred toward the agency formed to make air travel safer after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But the attack could ultimately lead to changes in the way airports are patrolled.

Ciancia, who was shot four times by airport police, remained in critical condition Monday. He has not been scheduled to appear in court. Any appearance will depend on when his doctors say he’s ready, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

The FBI said Ciancia had a handwritten letter, stating that he made the conscious decision to try to kill multiple TSA officers and “instill fear in your traitorous minds.”

The unemployed motorcycle mechanic who recently moved to Los Angeles from the small, blue-collar town of Pennsville, N.J., had a friend drop him at LAX on Friday just moments before he pulled a .223-caliber assault rifle from his duffel bag and opened fire, killing one TSA officer and wounding three other people, including two more TSA workers.

Raven’s Nightmare a scream over Halloween First-year event features the events that bring the frights in Halloween.

ALEX KERKMAN Staff Writer Halloween has come and gone, but this year’s favorite holiday in Mankato featured a brand new haunted house that lived up to the billing.

Located at Affordable Towing off Summit Avenue, Raven’s Nightmare was held for the first time this year.

Perhaps you visited the attraction yourself, as the haunted house was open every Thursday through Saturday the entire length of October, besides Halloween night.

Every Thursday was promoted as a student night. Although that was supposed to be the end of it, Raven’s Nightmare ended up holding a customer appreciation night on their final night last Saturday.

Undead zombies roamed the parking lot, cats lurked in the shadows, and cars were tipped on their sides. And this was all before you even entered the

haunted house.

Raven’s Nightmare was made possible due to the contributions of Allen and Amy Schmidt, the owners of Affordable Towing.

The Schmidt’s purchased props and decorations from Dark Shadows Mansion, a haunted house that was located on St. Andrew drive for 10 years until 2011.

Together with their five children, they put together a haunted house full of horrifying rooms that seemed like a maze to some people.

The haunted house, named “Zombie Alley,” did not only contain horrors and terror.

Planned to be a carnival atmosphere, Raven’s Nightmare included three carnival rides, food stands and live band performances. Among the rides was a graviton and octopus ride.

This was done to bring in entire families, not just college aged students.

The entire family, along with many hired actors, were given the task of scaring visitors. Each

actor was given some wiggle room when coming up with their own characters. Among the different costumes included zombies, chain-saw wielding maniacs, blood -covered mad doctors and last, but not least, creepy clowns. There was one simple rule that Allen Schmidt made sure they had to follow.

“Boo is not allowed. No boo’s,” said Schmidt.

Tickets were $13 each, but VIP tickets at the price of $26 allowed customers to skip the front of the line.

is no word yet on whether the haunted house will come back for next Halloween, but judging by its success one can surely hope they will make their return.

Regular season champs once again The second-consecutive NSIC regular season championship ended on a sour note, losing 1-0 to Winona State.

Knowing the Mavericks, that will just fuel them for the NSIC Tournament this weekend in Mankato.

The Minnesota State University, Mankato women’s soccer team finished the regular season as Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champions, but suffered their first NSIC loss in more than two

years.

The NSIC-unbeaten streak ended at 34 matches, which is the all-time best in the NSIC. The streak dates back to the 2011 season and is very impressive considering the competition in the NSIC. “To do that in a conference that is as strong as the NSIC is just a testament to how strong our program and the players that have been a part of all those games. It is a very significant accomplishment to go play on the road, and some of the places we have to go, it is not east to win in this conference,” Head Coach Brain Bahl said. “To have that long of a run at it is extremely impressive.”

The Mavericks finished the regular season with a 14-2-2 record, earning them the first overall seed in the NSIC tournament.

“It feels great. You know this is what we have worked for all year long and from the start I told the girls that this is a special group, and I knew they were going to do big things and we encourage them to continue to dream big,” Bahl said.

The Mavericks have not lost much in the last few years and will likely be eager to rebound from the recent loss Wednesday when they get a chance for revenge against the team that gave MSU a loss in the NSIC tournament-final last year.

“I think that all that loss did was make us mad and kind of has left a bad taste in our mouth and motivated us. We know we lost one streak, but we know that we got another streak that is running strong and want to keep that thing going…and make sure that we start the second season, which is the conference tournament in style with a win against Minot State,” Bahl said.

The Mavericks return to action at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Pitch for the first round of the NSIC tournament when they host Minot State. The Mavericks have won the last 34 matches at home, which is a streak that dates back to the 2010 season. The streak is the longest in NSIC history and 13th best in NCAA Division II history.

“They typically play a little more of a defensive style. They make it tough on you in regards to finishing off opportunities. It is a unique style that they play and it is always an interesting battle,” Bahl said. “They actually beat us last year in the Conference tournament, and I think we got a little bit of a chip on our shoulders from that.”

The Mavericks men’s hockey team traveled to Bemidji last weekend, where they were taken by surprise in the Friday night game. Playing Bemidji State University at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, the Mavs couldn’t catch the breaks they needed.

After a scoreless first period on Friday night, the Beavers took over. Showing the Mavs that they have some depth on their roster too, BSU found their first two goals from fourth line players. St. Paul native and former CretinDurham Hall forward Bob Kinne kicked things off for Bemidji when he found himself all alone on a breakaway with Williams and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Beaver lead. tallied a goal of his own to give BSU a 2-0 lead before the Mavs dug themselves a bigger hole.

Freshman defenseman Carter Foguth took a desperate tripping penalty to prevent a breakaway before sophomore forward Brett Knowles took a slashing penalty right after, leaving the Mavs two men short on a five-on-three power play for the Beavers. With the two man advantage, Ruslan Pedan buried a goal to put BSU up 3-0 on the visiting Mavericks with assists going to Matt Prapavessis and Danny Mattson.

A minute later, MSU attempted to stop the bleeding when freshman forward Jordan Nelson found himself in the slot and ripped a shot past Walsh to put the Mavs on the board with 3:35 to go in the second period. It was

Mavericks’ athleticism once again too much for their NSIC opponent

The Minnesota State University, Mankato football team once again proved why they sit on top of the NSIC and the country in their dominating 45-3 win over Wayne State on Saturday.

The Wildcats of Wayne State found out what they were getting into quickly as the Mavericks had scored 21 points in their first three possessions—with 8:10 still to play in the first quarter.

Finding a football player who scored a rushing, passing and receiving touchdown in one game would be hard to come by, but senior quarterback Jon Wolf did at Blakeslee Stadium for the Mavericks’ first three touchdowns, and all three touchdowns were 40 yards or more.

As the first Maverick to accomplish this since 1997, Wolf started it off with a 50-yard touchdown run in the Mavericks’ first possession, then followed it with a 43-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Austin Rieder.

The Rieder--Wolf connection has been building in their last two games, connecting on four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

The six-foot Eau Claire, Wis. native has proven to be a big threat in the long ball with four receptions for 43 yards or more.

Wolf finished off his historical first quarter with his first career touchdown reception on a play the Mavericks call “Wolverine”, where Wolf sent it to senior receiver Dennis Carter on a straight bubble pass.

This time after his short dump to the side, Wolf slipped out and Carter hurled a 46-yard pass for their third touchdown. Keep in mind; the first quarter wasn’t even halfway over.

What Wolf did on Saturday didn’t even phase his teammates. They see that effort and athleticism every day.

“It’s essentially becoming the norm to see Jon Wolf playing at this high of a level,” Carter said. “He’s one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the country and he continually proves it week in and week out.

He still wasn’t finished. In the second quarter, the Oak Forest, Ill. native tacked on his fourth and final touchdown of the day on a fouryard touchdown run, pretty boring after the action-packed first quarter. Senior placekicker Sam Brockshus went one-for-two in field goals and ended the 31-point first half with a 36-yard boot.

The Mavericks ran the clock out in the second half but weren’t done putting points on the board. Sophomore running backs Connor Thomas and Chad Zastrow finished out the scoring with each rushing for a touchdown.

The offense for the Mavericks was explosive as usual with 456 total yards, as the squad rushed over 200 yards for the seventh time this season with 251. The Wildcats just didn’t have an answer to stopping Wolf on the ground as he averaged just less than 14 yards per carry.

Thomas finished the game with 77 yards on 12 carries.

In the passing game, Carter’s 55 receiving yards was the most among receivers to Wolf’s 159 passing yards. The 6-foot-5 sophomore tight end, Bryce Duncan, brought down four passes for 49 yards.

ing less than 200 yards of total offense. With the Wildcats traveling 176 yards total, only 49 of them were on the ground.

Sophomore cornerback Justin Otto led the Mavericks in tackles with 10 on the day, four solo, while both sophomore cornerback Patrick Schmidt and junior cornerback Kelend Smith took a pass from the Wildcats. This pick marks the fifth one of the

season for Schmidt, which now puts him in a second-place tie in the NSIC with teammate junior safety Nathan Hancock.

The Mavericks did what they do best and that is rushing the quarterback. In the team’s three sacks, senior defensive end Chris Schaudt had 1.5 of them for 16 yards, giving him four on the season.

SOCCER continued from 9 Minot State leads the NSIC with 196 fouls and will look to play a physical and defensive minded game in order to upend MSU. The Mavericks have the second most fouls with 160. The Mavericks were able to score one goal against Minot State earlier this season en route to a 1-0 win but did struggle at times to get opportunities.

The Mavericks have played extremely well at home over the past three seasons and will look to continue their 34-match home-unbeaten streak in the NSIC Tournament this week. MSU will be the host the remaining games of the NSIC tournament with games played on Friday and Sunday.

It wasn’t how the Mavericks planned on ending their season with a loss to an NSIC rival, but the squad is looking forward to seeing them come to Mankato for some NSIC playoff action.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. Winona is a very strong team, and it is really tough to win at their place. We played well though; it was one of those games where we couldn’t capitalize on our more significant opportunities,” Bahl said. “Overall I still think we still played well, nothing that we will hang our heads about and hopefully we will get an opportunity to play them again.”

Heading into the third period hopeful of a comeback, the Mavericks couldn’t get anything going. Only recording six shots in the final period, the Mavs couldn’t find the scoring they needed, and gave one up. Beaver’s leading goal scorer Cory Ward tallied his fifth of the year past Williams at the midway point of the final period to put the nail in the coffin for a 4-1 Beaver win.

Stephon Williams was credited with the loss for MSU, making only 16 saves on 20 shots, not a typical performance for a usually steady Williams. On the other end of the rink, Walsh was outstanding in goal for the Beavers, making 27 saves on 28 shots for the win.

The Mavericks also failed to score on the man advantage, with five power play opportunities and no goals. Matt Leitner is usually the go-to man on the power play and was clearly missed on Friday night as he stayed in Mankato, missing the road trip due to a back injury.

The Beavers played another hard fought game on Saturday night, but the Mavericks made some changes in hope of salvaging a split at Bemidji. Saturday night saw freshman goaltender Cole Huggins make his first career start between the pipes for the Mavs, leaving the usual starter Stephon Williams in the backup position for the game.

MSU finally got their power play to click when Stepan scored his first collegiate goal with the man advantage at 4:40 of the first period, with junior forwards Max Gaede and Chase Grant getting the assists. That was fairly short lived, though, as the Mavs went scoreless on their next six power plays of the game. Stepan’s goal was the only scoring of the first period and enough for a 1-0 Maverick lead with the Beavers missing on some key scoring chances with shots wide of the goal.

Sophomore forward Bryce Gervais gave the Mavs a 2-0 lead with his team leading third goal of the year at the 12:20 point of the second period, with juniors Jean-Paul LaFontaine and Zach Palmquist garnering assists on the play. The two-goal lead wouldn’t last long, however, as the Beavers fought back before the end of the period.

Mitch Cain scored for the Beavers with 7:57 remaining in the second period to bring the score within a goal at 2-1. The Mavericks looked as if they would head to the locker room with the lead until Graeme McCormack scored a power play goal with just 18 seconds remaining in the period, tying the score heading into the final period.

Senior forward and captain Johnny McInnis netted his first of the year on an assist by sophomore forward Dylan Margonari with just 4:52 to go in the game. With both teams sending a player to the penalty box, play was reduced to four-on-four action until the Beavers pulled their goaltender to get an extra attacker to play the Mavs five-on-four.

With the goalie pulled, sophomore forward Teddy Blueger scored his second of the year, an unassisted empty net goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the game. That was thought to be all that was left of this game, but right off the center ice faceoff, Beaver defenseman Sam Rendle took the puck in for a goal with just one second left in the game to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of the Mavericks, but it was too late.

Cole Huggins did well for MSU in his first start, recording 28 saves of 31 shots. Walsh played well again for BSU, making 27 of 30 saves. While the Mavericks would have loved to sweep Bemidji on the road, the split still gives them two points in the WCHA standings after their first conference series. The Beavers Friday night win gives them six points in their first four conference games, which seems to indicate early on that they will perform much better this season than the last few.

The Mavericks return home this week for a series at the Verizon Wireless Center against the Bowling Green State University Falcons. The puck drops in downtown Mankato at 7:37 p.m.

Friday night and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday.

Volleyball team improving towards end of regular season LUKE CARLSON Staff Writer Two tough conference opponents stormed into Taylor Center this last weekend, and the Minnesota State University, Mankato volleyball team ended up adding one loss and one win to their record during the weekend home stand to pull to 11-13 overall with a 6-10 conference record on the season. The Northern State Wolves visited Friday evening before the Mavericks took on the rival state school MSU-Moorhead Dragons Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks were tested early and often in their Friday night game against the Wolves.

The two teams kept it close in the first set of the night, and the Wolves held only a slight lead at 9-7 before they went on a romp of the Mavericks, outscoring the home team 16-3 to close out the opening round by a score of 2510.

Good defensive play from freshman middle-blocker Lexi Platz (three blocks) and freshman defensive-specialist Haley Fogarty (three digs) was not enough to keep Northern State from blazing to a 1-0 set lead.

The Mavericks were beaten nearly as bad in the second set as the Wolves took control early. A lack of offense and poor ball attacking doomed the home squad from the get go, and the Wolves cruised to a 25-15 set win. Fogarty led the Mavericks in the set with seven digs while sophomore setter Ellie Van De Steeg added nine assists.

In a third set that saw neither a lead change nor even a tie score, the Wolves plowed their way over MSU with excellent kill play and hitting percentages, taking the set by a score of 25-17 and earning the match sweep over the Mavericks. Van De Steeg once again had nine assists while the Mavericks were only able to succeed on 10 of 28 kill attempts in the set.

Van De Steeg finished the match with 20 assists, Fogarty had 14 total digs, and sophomore outside-hitter Chandra Honebrink was the only Maverick to record double figures in kills with ten on the night.

The Mavericks added to the win column Saturday afternoon against the MSU-Moorhead Dragons behind stellar performances from Honebrink and junior outside-hitter Tiana Runck.

Honebrink, Runck, and the Mavericks started out the match on a strong note and led the Dragons throughout the opening set on their way to a 25-17 win.

Honebrink flexed her offensive muscle in the set with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage.

While it seemed as though the momentum from the first set carried over to the second when the Mavericks opened up a 12-6 lead, the Dragons rallied to a 2522 second set win and drew the match to a 1-1 tie. Honebrink and Runck each had five kills in the middle frame.

The Dragons would prove a stubborn foe at the end of the night in the fourth set, but Honebrink, with seven kills in the deciding bout, led MSU to a 25-21 set win and a 3-1 match victory.

Freshman middle-blocker Krista Hassing also contributed five kills and was an efficient source of offense with a .833 hitting percentage.

“You see improvements and an attempt to do things more efficiently and effectively,” head coach Dennis Amundson said when asked about how the team has improved upon their game and how they have won three of their last five games after losing six straight.

Honebrink and Runck each finished the match with careerhighs in kills, earning 21 and 20 kills, respectively. Van De Steeg ended the night with a seasonhigh 62 kills, and as a team, the Mavericks hit .228 and posted five blocks.

“No matter the outcome, you look at the numbers and we’re slowly getting better,” Amundson said. “Our passing is better, our defense is better. We’re blocking better. This group of kids we have out there are slowly making improvements.”

The Mavericks finish their regular season schedule at home on Friday with MinnesotaCrookston coming to Mankato.

Ender’s Game plays well Long awaited adaption shows competency in production, talent in performances.

ANDREW SIMON Staff Writer Unless it’s J.R.R. Tolkien or J.K. Rowling, book-to-screen adaptations hardly do very well and with such universal praise attributed to Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, there was plenty to be concerned about for this cinematic presentation.

Look at last year’s John Carter, a movie that brought to life a be-

loved science fiction classic, and soon after plummeted for everyone involved.

As it turns out, Ender’s Game is competent, well-paced, beautifully scored, impressively acted, entertaining and left the nagging desire to want to see the story continued.

Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield, Hugo) is the perfect combination of emotional understanding and tactical brutality, and thus, the perfect candidate to lead an army of young military cadets to exterminate the Formics, an insect race that threatened humanity years earlier.

Despite his skills, Ender doesn’t handle authority well, becoming

a target of bullies and disciplinary action from Colonial Graff (Harrison Ford) but his natural leadership abilities propel him to the head of class. There, Ender assembles the least likely candidates to assist him in virtual training exercises, amongst his closest friends, Petra (Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit). But not everything is as it seems and Ender realizes a fatal flaw in himself and those he believed in, starting him off on a journey of self-

scheme of things, the movie delivers a fun and interesting time, and that is more credit than the trailers indicated.

The little humanity that is on display doesn’t come from the script but Asa Butterfield’s rather impressive performance. There’s something about the eyes and the intensity Butterfield brings to the role -- this unreserved confidence in every word choice and every thought where the audience soon becomes attached to Ender and

Gavin Hood directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, arguably one of the worst superhero movies to ever exist, so his strong role in this film, as both writer and director, was worrisome. The word competent doesn’t necessarily scream extraordinary film and Ender’s really isn’t extraordinary, but it’s well done. It misses some dramatic beats and some opportunities to really humanize Ender instead of this sort of mechanic, impossibly brilliant and always correct entity but in the grand

wants him to be right about everything that there’s a fear that he might be wrong at the most crucial second. Butterfield and Steinfeld are the real stars of this film, both displaying an innocent type of friendship between the two and yet giving their own respective roles a determined strength and intelligence. Both can act with Harrison Ford and Viola Davis and not feel upstaged, and that’s impressive.

The digital work is good enough that one can suspend knowledge that this enormous practice room is nothing more than digital data and believe that it’s real, spacious and awe-inspiring. Special effects are used as a

adult and science fiction epics, but the way it’s presented is wholly engaging, and the movie presents that story straightforward, with alarming urgency and, yet, fun.

Director/writer Hood does justice to the tale of Ender Wiggin, and although it’s not perfect with its character work and, when necessary, exposition, it’s certainly worth a trip to the cinema. At the very least, it inspires interest in looking up the source material and if Ender doesn’t see a sequel in cinematic form, it will be the only way to experience the journey Ender embarks on at films end.

TV/ Movie news roundup: 11/5 ANDREW SIMON Staff Writer In a move that even AMC president Charlie Collier referred to as “anti-climatic”, AMC has officially renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season. The season four premiere drew 20.2 million viewers, the biggest numbers for a cable broadcast non-sports affiliated. Unless any new “creative differences” arise, Scott Gimple, who succeeded Glen Mazzara, will remain as showrunner for the fifth year.

The shows current fourth season has four more episodes to air before its two month break, returning in February with the last eight.

Meanwhile, the end is nigh for CBS’ How I Met Your Mother but that doesn’t necessarily mean the channel is ready to part with the series just yet. They are currently courting the idea of a spinoff, titled How I Met Your Father, following a new group of friends, doing the same sort of hijinks as HIMYM but with a woman in the lead role instead of Ted Mosbey. HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas would write and executive produce the project with Emily Spivey (Up All Night). If this concept gains traction, one possible scenario being talked about is having the new show’s central characters introduced in the Mother series finale.

Comedy Central has renewed Drunk History for a second year, Key & Peele for a fourth year and Brickleberry for a third. The happy news continues for Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper, as NBC has given a 13-episode series order to a half-hour comedy series, tentatively titled Tooken, created

November Blu-Preview Invasions of all sorts look to top this month’s video charts, from a White House siege to alien visitors, both friendly and not.

White House Down Roland Emmerich’s latest action extravaganza is a movie that should have come out in the ‘90s. It’s dopey, clichéd and stars the biggest names they could get (not necessarily for their acting talents). Had it not been for its over-reliance on dumb comedy and an absurd runtime, the movie could have bested itself and been a breezy bit of fun. As is, the fast forward button is needed more than once.

Imagine it: you’re the editor this movie needed and your job is to trim the massive bloating!

What will go first, the overlong character introductions or entire subplots that should have been left out for the sake of pace?

What will it be? The suspense!

Man of Steel Man of Steel is not a perfect movie. Point taken (and taken over and over in the past five months -- enough, thank you).

But it’s worth saying again what was said last year when The Amazing Spider-Man hit to a fair amount of praise and a lot of concentrated bs from the other side of the aisle-- issues included, if you put your clingy, fanboy entitlement aside for a minute, you’ll be able to see that the movie is a pretty damn entertaining blockbuster and a far more realized and relatable portrayal of a classic hero.

Man of Steel does a lot more right by Superman than it does wrong. The cast is phenomenal, the score moving, and the first half of the film paints a harrowing new picture of the world’s greatest superhero as it sets up this brand new take. This all leads to a much more actionoriented second half but what it lacks in thoughtfulness it makes up for in thrills, as we get the top notch action not seen before in a Superman flick.

Even as it enters its much maligned climax, the movie remains exciting throughout, enough so to be remain in the better half of this summer’s of-

ferings. Man of Steel’s strengths should carry over nicely to video but a small clause should be attached: while the picture and sound will no doubt kick ass, Warner Bros. hasn’t been the greatest about special features (this edition including a decent four hours worth), nor have they been very satisfying when it comes to their “Ultraviolet only” stance on digital copies. The film is currently going for the pre-order price of $24.99, but seeing how The Dark Knight Rises did the same last year, then ended up around $17.99 in its release week, we’ll go ahead and say...

The World’s End Web Photos

It’s rare when a movie like The World’s End comes along and delivers on almost every front it can. Director Edgar Wrights finale to his Cornetto Trilogy is an all around great piece of filmmaking and a comedy blast.

Following addict and manchild Gary King (Simon Pegg) and his now middle-aged friends from school days on their quest to complete an epic pub-crawl in their hometown, the first half of the film showcases some stellar British wit from Pegg and company’s awesome service of the script as the crew catches back up.

From there on, the film becomes a sort of homage to Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Village of the Damned as secrets about the town are revealed and the crew must fend off an invasion of the highest order, in humorous fashion of course.

And yet, the best comedies add a touch of humanity and Wright’s inclusion of King’s self-destructive patterns acting as a sort of cancer hits in a subtle but moving way.

The World’s End is fine filmmaking, plain and simple.

It’s witticisms, nods to British culture and infectious fun can stand for repeat viewings and with Universal’s bevy of special features, The World’s End definitely comes in as…

Fey also has a workplace comedy for NBC and a half-hour sitcom set at a women’s college for Fox in the pipeline.

News is less good for Lifetime’s The Client List, as it has been axed after two seasons.

Returning from the ashes, Sasha Baron Cohen’s Ali G will live again. Ali G: Rezurrection has been commissioned by FX. The series will air all episodes from Da Ali G Show, complete with episodes that haven’t aired in the U.S., with remixes and new intros.

In the realm of cinema, Paramount has greenlit Little Black Dress, the second film by Sopranos creator David Chase, following a female war veteran in her mid-twenties suffering from a disability who meets a NYPD detective who helps her regain control of her spiraling life.

Paramount is eyeing Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) as director for Star Trek 3. Executive produced by J.J. Abrams, the third film in the series is being readied for a summer 2014 start date, with a possible release in late 2015 or 2016.

Channing Tatum will produce and star in Bad Romance for MGM after finishing photography on 22 Jump Street, with Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine set to write and direct the project. Upcoming projects of Tatum’s include Jupiter Ascending (written/directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski of The Matrix fame), the drama Foxcatcher and the animated film The LEGO Movie.

A remake of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary seems to be moving forward. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is set to direct a script by Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire) and David Kajgnaich (The Invasion).

Finally, the critically acclaimed cult classic Trick ‘r Treat is officially getting a sequel.

Written and directed by Michael Doughtery, Trick ‘r Treat was a horror anthology featuring zombies, werewolves and vampires, starring the likes of Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy). Although a script is not completed, Doughtery is adamant the sequel will explore the roots of the enigmatic Halloween icon Sam and delve into different types of monsters that aren’t featured in common horror.
