Gov. Walz to ‘Kato Voters: ‘This is Our Moment’ MICHAEL MCSHANE Contributing Writer The governor of Minnesota made an appearance Saturday in Mankato as a final push to get young citizens out to vote in an election that is one week away.

Gov. Walz, flanked by local leaders and DFL candidates, spoke to a generally socially distanced crowd at Highland Park to speak about both the importance of voting and the consequences of voting into office people unqualified for the job.

“It’s not about our team winning, it’s not about the things that irritate us although I have to tell you I don’t spend a lot of time complaining but sometimes you have to call things out,” Gov. Walz said.

Walz’s message during his speech was that the future of the country was on the ballet come Nov. 3. With climate change and systemic racism as examples, Gov. Walz spoke through cheers from the crowd about the impact of the election.

Mankato City Council Election Guide for Students MAXWELL MAYLEBEN Editor in Chief Next Tuesday, there will be three sections for elections on the ballot for the Mankato City Council.

The city of Mankato runs on a charter form of government with a council-manager plan. Mankato is broken into 5 geographic sections called wards, each of which have their own council member.

In addition to those five members, the council consists of a council member At-Large and a Mayor.

Wards 2 and 4 are both up for election this year, as well as the councilperson At-Large.

Mike Lavern is running unopposed for the At-Large position. Lavern was first elected to the City Council in 2000 and continue to serve on the council until losing an election in 2012. Lavern was then asked in 2016 to run for the position again and returned.

Minnesota State University, Mankato students are getting ready to vote, with this being the first Presidential election for many of them.

Freshman Mafisa Dini said, “I’ve already voted. I voted early here in Mankato, so I wouldn’t have to wait in line on voting day.”

This approach to casting your ballot seems ideal in the midst of a global pandemic, and could possibly lead to the future of voting. It allows people to go to their local polling places and put in their vote when it works for them, which helps decrease voter suppression.

In both North Mankato and Mankato, there are numerous polling places for the community to go in and complete their civic duty depending on their precinct.

Some of these locations include the Blue Earth County Historical Society, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and North Mankato Fire Station #2. To find your local polling place, you can visit: pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us Another easy way to vote for the upcoming election is requesting an absentee ballot. To do this, you have to contact your local election office early enough in advance for you to receive the ballot, fill it out, and send it back in order to be counted.

Filling out the absentee ballot itself is another troubling aspect. For people who are using this method for the first time to vote, it’s important to note some important factors.

The 2020 election is one week away and Minnesota State University, Mankato students are voicing opinions about the importance of voting.

Signs around campus from the 2020 inSider Newsletter, the campus’s weekly newsletter to engage students, election polls had shown that just 50% of 18-24 year olds in Minnesota voted in 2016. This year, 81.4% of Mavericks say they will vote.

“I have already voted by mail since I am from out of state. I think it is very important to vote this year especially just because of all the chaos that has been 2020, this is a time for change that we need now more than ever,” Abby Alderman, freshman at MNSU said.

Also stated in the poll is that 71.7% of students surveyed said the election will have a direct impact on their lives.

“I think voting is important because your vote matters and counts and will make an impact. If you can vote I think you should vote because it directly affects your life for the next four years,” Mallory Schafer, freshman at MNSU said.

This year’s election has seen a huge increase in voting by mail due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although most states are allowing voters to vote early and in person on Nov. 3, 2020.

“Yes, I think it’s important to vote because it’s your right as a citizen and your duty to voice your beliefs, although sometimes the majority vote doesn’t count I still think it is important,” MNSU freshman Andrew Zoubek said.

Voicing their opinions about this year’s election, the majority of MNSU students are predicted to vote this year if they haven’t already.

A Break Down of the Presidential Candidates’ Differing Policies Former Vice President Joe Biden is the Democratic candidate.

Biden’s Vice President selection is Kamala Harris, who served as the Attorney General for California.

President Donald Trump is seeking a second term. His vice president is former congressman Mike Pence.

STUDENT DEBT Biden proposes forgiving student debt for poorer grads. If elected, his plan is to immediately cancel a minimum of $10,000 of student debt per person that was originally brought up

by Sen. Elizabeth Warren. This would be funded by repealing the high-income “excess business loan” tax cut in the CARES Act. He also proposes making public college tuition-free for families earning $125,000 or less.

Trump proposes to eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and subsidized loans programs. His proposal requests a 7.8% decrease in funds for the Department of Education compared to the budget of 2020. He also wants to decrease the number of years undergraduate students have to pay off their loans by five years. Congress dismissed his proposal in the past few years. Trump also proposes setting limits on parent PLUS and grad PLUS loans.

JOBS AND WAGES Biden would raise the top income tax rate back to 39.6% from 37% and the top corporate income tax rate to 28% from 21%. If elected, he will apply Social Security taxes to those earnings above $400,000, tax capital gains and dividends at ordinary rates for those with annual incomes of more than $1 million and impose a 15% minimum tax on book income of large companies.

Trump’s plan for top earners is to extend the provisions under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 beyond their scheduled expiration, maintaining the top tax rate at 37% and the 20% deduction for pass-through owners.

TAXES Biden wants to create millions of middle class jobs through his infrastructure plan. This involves building renewable energy infrastructure, anchor institutions and climate resiliency industries. Biden proposes raising the federal minimum wage to $15.

Trump wants to create jobs through infrastructure investments as well as continue his plan to the “Buy American, Hire American” immigration agenda.

The U.S. economy created 6.6 million jobs during the first three years after Trump took office. Trump also wants to leave federal minimum wage rates up to the states.

CLIMATE CHANGE Biden would rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement. His plans will require federal spending of $2 trillion over his first term and aims achieve a 100% clean energy economy with net-zero emissions no later than 2050.

Trump is a strong supporter of the fossil fuel industry. While in office, he has pulled America out of the Paris Climate Agreement due to his belief that the deal’s terms are unfair to American workers.

HEALTH CARE Instead of Medicare for All, Biden wants to create a public health insurance option and lower the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 60.

In the 2021 budget proposal, the Trump administration proposes spending cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. His agenda, however, is to end surprise billing as well as try to bring down drug prices.

migrants and refugees, such as the Liberians, reproductive justice, and lowering the cost of prescription drug prices.”

Russert also noted, “As far as what I hope to see in November, I hope that Minnesotans recognize Senator Smith’s hard work and re-elect her.

We need a dedicated public servant representing us, rather than a talk radio host.”

On the other hand, Jason Lewis, a member of the Republican Party and a former radio talk show host before he entered Congress, is the opposing runner for this election.

With Election Day in just over a week, Southern Minnesotans are prepared to cast their ballots. There is more than just who will be the next President of the United States on the ballot.

Senator Tina Smith, a member of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor was voted into office after Al Franken’s resignation in the 2018 for special election to fill the remainder of Franken’s term. Smith supports access to abortion, as she served as the Vice President of Planned Parenthood from 2003 to 2006.

Smith has worked to combat global climate change and supports the legalization of marijuana because of how such legislation disproportionately impacts Black Americans. Smith also supports stronger gun control legislation, humane immigration policies, combating the greed of pharmaceutical companies, and expanding the Affordable Care Act. Chris Russert, President of

your choice of President and Vice President. Along with this, on the Minnesota ballot you will also be voting for US Senator, US Representative, depending on your district, State Senator and Representative, depending on your district, County Office positions as well as City Office positions.

After this, you need to put the completed ballot into the separate envelope that is provided and fill out the necessary information on the back. This typically consists of your name and signature, the date, and, depending on the state, a witness’s signature.

It’s also ideal to be looking into each candidate’s policies and what they propose instead of voting based on their

party.

Lastly, there is always the option of voting in-person on election day. For some people, this is the best way for them to vote and feel comfortable about their vote being counted.

MNSU freshman Kyah Maldonado said, “I don’t really have a plan for voting, but I know I will be. With the election being next week, I’ll probably be voting in-person on election day.”

If you do plan on voting in-person, it’s important to space out your schedule in case you do have to stand in line for a long time, and of course to remember your face mask to keep yourself and others safe. Your local polling place can again be found in the link stated above.

In Congress, some of his political positions were that he critiqued the effectiveness of the War on Drugs and authored a bill that worked towards petty drug offenses for youth. Lewis also supported the Republican’s bill to remove the Affordable Care Act and lowering taxes.

A large aspect of Lewis’ campaign is in line with President Trump’s position on restoring law and order, particularly in the Minneapolis area.

“I’m going to make certain that Minneapolis and St. Paul and the suburbs get the resources they need to restore the rule of law,” said Lewis in a video submitted to WCCO. Lewis also speaks to the importance of lifting the lockdown, arguing that it is based largely on faulty studies and numbers.

In reference to COVID-19 lockdowns, Lewis said that one of the most important things in this campaign is “undoing these Orwellian lockdowns that are bankrupting small mom and pop shops all across our state.”

“I’ll tell you what I don’t need – I don’t need representatives coming and telling people not to test because it’ll just increase the number of COVID cases.”

In attendance who also spoke was the wife of Dan Feehan who is running against current U.S. Representative Jim Hagadorn. The two previously faced each other in the 2018 elections where Hagadorn edged out a win against Feehan to flip the 1st District for the Republicans.

While Feehan couldn’t attend, his wife Amy Feehan, came to speak about why her husband should be voting into office next week.

“There is no one who embodies leadership like my husband,” Feehan said. Speaking on the topic of young voters, Feehan emphasized the im-

portance of the young voter demographic. “Knowing that, if all of the young voters came out in the numbers that we have of them in this country, they could truly change the path of this country and make it what they want it to be.”

One young voter whose goal is to get as many to the voting booth next week is Chris Russert, the current president of the College Democrats at MNSU. Russert spoke about his irritation over the overuse of divisiveness in current politics and his wish for honest change that will develop the future his generation will inherit.

“We’re facing a political climate where so many politicians and a lot of them have come to this state and stoked hatred and anger as their primary way to gain power,”

Russert said. “It’s not right and it’s not the future that I want to inherit.”

With just a week left remaining until the country learns who will lead the nation for the next four years, Democrats have only a few more days remaining to push undecided voters to the blue.

Even with polls showing a commanding lead by Joe Biden against President Donald Trump, Democrats such as Gov. Walz is still wary about how the election could turn out.

“We take nothing for granted, so it’s about turning out those folks now,” Gov. Walz said. “I think the dynamics are much different; pretty hard for the president to say that he’s going to change things when four years he owns the economy, he owns COVID.”

US House of Reps Election: Jim Hagedorn, Dan Feehan ASHLEY OPINA Staff Writer As election day draws near, the urgency of all Americans to research the candidates on the ballots continues to grow.

For a majority of college students, doing a deep dive on politicians may be the least of their concerns, especially during midterm season.

Despite the hecticness of school, it is important for everyone, including college students, to be informed of who is running for office in their district, in order to vote for the one that aligns best with their political interests.

In Minnesota 1st Congressional District, incumbent Jim Hagedorn, part of the Republican Party, and opponent Dan Feehan, part of the Democratic Party, are running to be the U.S. House Representative.

Hagedorn was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota and spent his childhood on his family farm where he gained knowledge of farming, small business, country living, and small town values.

Hagedorn’s father was elected to Congress to represent Minnesota 2nd Congressional District in 1974, which introduced Hagedorn to the

world of politics. 45 years later, Hagedorn was sworn into office himself to represent Minnesota 1st Congressional District in 2019 and has been in office ever since.

His opponent, Dan Feehan, was raised in Red Wing, Minnesota and was inspired at a young age by the public service of his parents to follow in their footsteps and serve his community.

tive duty soldier from 2005 through 2009. Years after, he entered the world of politics by working as an Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. His time in that role allowed him to work closely with Congress in the lawmaking process.

Feehan’s main objective for running is to give the people of his district a representative who puts people first, rather than the special

interests of corporations.

According to Feehan’s personal statement from his campaign website, “I am fighting to make sure that every southern Minnesotan has affordable, accessible, and high-quality health care and prescription drugs.”

Feehan continues on by saying, “I am fighting for our farmers by ending Washington’s disastrous trade policies and finding new

markets throughout the world and here at home.”

He also says, “I am fighting to strengthen early education, K-12 education, and post-secondary education and finding opportunities to increase union apprenticeships so we can bolster our economy for working families and ensure everyone has a fair shot on a level-playing field in southern Minnesota.”

“Finally, in foreign and defense policy, I will do whatever it takes to keep our country safe and secure,” says Feehan.

“That is why I will lead an effort to bring new Congressional oversight to our unending war on terrorism which will ensure our service members are only sent into harm’s way with a clear mission and when it’s absolutely necessary.”

In comparison, Hagedorn currently serves on the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business. His main focus is farming, Main Street enterprises, and the rural way of life in southern Minnesota.

Go Vote, or Stop Complaining!

Editorial

Every day, Facebook reminds us that we should register to vote. Every YouTube video seems to start and end with telling us to get out and vote. Every celebrity seems to be hitting their Instagram stories nonstop with reminders for us to vote.

Frankly, it is annoying, but it is necessary.

Particularly with young people in this country, we have such a growing voice in politics, but if we do not use it, then our country will continue to be governed by those much older than us, who do not truly represent our best interests.

Voting is the single most important way that we are able to make our voices heard.

Protests, civil unrest or social media campaigns mean nothing when it comes to the end result if we choose not to vote.

It is incredibly important for us to have these “difficult conversations” and “listen” to one another, but again, none of that means anything if you choose not to act on it.

The way voting is designed to work is that we all get a small say in how we want our country, our state, or even our local government to run. In a perfect world, everyone would vote for what they believed in, and whatever the election resulted in would accurately represent the feelings of the majority of the population.

If you do not vote, then you are throwing away your say.

You are essentially saying that you are okay with whatever the

outcome is no matter what.

With everything going on in the world right now, it is vital for us, especially us young people, to go and vote for what we believe in. Because if you don’t, then what you believe in will never have any sway in what happens.

There is a saying that goes “you can’t complain about a

headache until you’ve tried taking an Advil.” There is no room in this country for people to speak loudly, but not act on their beliefs.

Whether you are voting Republican, Democratic, or even going third party, it does not matter. Until we see a country where everyone votes, we will nev-

er have true representation of every citizen’s beliefs.

So, for those people who are able to and actively choose not to vote, you do not get to complain. You do not get to be upset by the election results. You have voided your civic right to outrage by avoiding your civic duty to make your voice heard.

Second Debate was Better, But How Can it Improve?

Opinion CHRISTIAN LOHRENZ Columnist As we near election day, the candidates for the presidency wind up for the home stretch.

Ballots have been mailed in for weeks and masses have opted for early voting across the country.

This past week the candidates took to the stage for the final debate of this election cycle. I, like many of you, I’m sure, was quite uneasy at the idea of sitting watching these two “debates” in a way that they did after the first debate.

However, this last round of debating truly was quite an ease to the mind of the American people, at least to some extent. Obviously, they held stances on either end and were quick to throw personal jabs, but it was to a much more contained extent than the first debate.

As a skeptic of the formula of the current debates, I was interested to see how the implementation of the “mute” feature would work. It was only used a handful of the times as the candidates, to both of their credit, didn’t interrupt nearly as much as expected.

Of course, this didn’t keep the candidates on topic. The topics that were outlined within the different time periods truly represented key issues that the American people wanted to hear opinions on.

Rather, both candidates took to personal jabs tied to corruption on both sides.

On the bright side, the candidates did outline more specifics on their plans to lead the country after the election.

Trump claimed the goal go-

ing forward was to continue the path he’s already created.

One of his key points was establishing that, in regard to the pandemic, the country has “Rounded the corner”. Many debate this claim as there is a dramatic increase in cases surrounding many of the Midwestern states.

Biden called for unity, claiming that he would be a president for both sides of the political spectrum. One of his key lines was an offensive attack on Trump’s response in which he stated, “Americans are learning to live with it (the pandemic),” to which Biden notably responded, “They are learning to die from it.”

The environment was discussed again in the debate as both candidates made their pitches for moving forward.

Biden proclaimed his plan would create new jobs and build the economy further, which of course Trump debated. President Trump laid out his plan to work toward cleaner water rather than a reduction of fracking and oil industry production.

All in all, this last debate was more bearable to watch and listen to. It seems that this format, which has been in place for decades, is here to stay. I wonder however how much these could benefit from the inclusion of other candidates? Third party candidates who may be polling poorly but simply could share other ideas.

There are those however who think the whole system needs to be thrown out and reimagined to truly give these candidates a platform to speak rather than push for sound bites.

Who knows, maybe podcast hosts like Joe Rogan will be the moderators of the future on a different platform.

Lavern also spoke of the various ways that the council is going to have to adapt its budget in the next few years to accommodate for COVID-19 causes budgetary short fallings, including the removal of over 20 city jobs.

If students choose to vote in Mankato, then Lavern will appear on their ballot as the only option for the Councilperson At-Large.

Another position on the ballot is the Ward 2 Councilperson. Jenn Melby Kelley, the incumbent is currently running for this position unopposed.

Kelley is a second-generation entrepreneur, and owner of the Coffee Hag, a popular coffee shop in downtown Mankato.

One main goal of Kelley’s is to advocate for small businesses in Mankato.

“We are known as a small business community,” said Kelley, “Supporting small businesses is the way to go”.

Ward 2 is the geographic area in Mankato most people would refer to as “downtown” or at the bottom of the

hill. This means if students live near the bars, they more than likely will see Kelley on the ballot.

The final election on the ballot is for Ward 4 in Mankato. This is the area that is north of Walmart and east of the river.

There are two candidates up for election this year for Ward 4, Dennis Dieken and Daniel Gatluak Puot Well.

Dieken, the incumbent of the position, has lived in Mankato for the past 28 years, according to the Greater Mankato Growth website.

He served as Ward 4’s Councilperson since 2016.

Well, a professional inter-

preter and President of the South Sudanese Community of Minnesota, spoke to the importance of keeping businesses supporting in Mankato.

“Make it easy for local business to get what they need.” said Well during the GMG forum.

Both Dieken and Well both oppose raising taxes for citizens, opting instead to trim different areas in the budget.

Ward 4, being further away from campus, will most likely not appear on most student’s ballot. However, for students who do live in this area, will have to choose between these two candidates.

Barrett Confirmed by Senate for Supreme Court, Takes Oath WASHINGTON (AP) — Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court late Monday by a deeply divided Senate, with Republicans overpowering Democrats to install President Donald Trump’s nominee days before the election and secure a likely conservative court majority for years to come.

Trump’s choice to fill the vacancy of the late liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act and even his own election. Democrats were unable to stop the outcome, Trump’s third justice on the court, as Republicans race to reshape the judiciary.

Barrett, 48, will be able to start work Tuesday, her lifetime appointment as the 115th justice solidifying the court’s rightward tilt.

Barrett told those gathered that she believes “it is the job of a judge to resist her policy preferences.” She vowed, “I

will do my job without any fear or favor.” `Monday’s vote was the closest high court confirmation ever to a presidential

Underscoring the political divide during the pandemic, the Republican senators, most wearing masks, sat in their seats as is tradition for landmark votes.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Deaths per day from the coronavirus in the U.S. are on the rise again, just as health experts had feared, and cases are climbing in practically every state, despite assurances from President Donald Trump over the weekend that “we’re rounding the turn, we’re doing great.”

With Election Day just over a week away, average deaths per day across the country are up 10% over the past two weeks, from 721 to nearly

794 as of Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Newly confirmed infections per day are rising in 47 states, and deaths are up in 34.

Health experts had warned that it was only a matter of time before deaths turned upward, given the record-breaking surge in cases engulfing the country. Deaths are a lagging indicator — that is, it generally takes a few weeks for people to sicken and die from the coronavirus.

Michael Osterholm, a University of Minnesota expert on infectious diseases who warned over the summer of a fall surge, said what’s happening now is a confluence of three factors: “pandemic fatigue” among people who are weary of hunkering down and are venturing out more; “pandemic anger” among those are don’t believe the scourge is a real threat; and cold weather, which is forcing more Americans indoors, where the virus can spread more easily.

For decades, America led the world in humanitarian policies by creating a sanctuary for the oppressed, admitting more refugees annually than all other countries combined.

That reputation eroded during Donald Trump’s presidency as he cut the number of refugees allowed in by more than 80%, and Canada replaced the U.S. as No. 1 for resettling people fleeing war and persecution.

Trump has arguably changed the immigration system more than any U.S. president, thrilling supporters with an “America first” message and infuriating critics who call his signature domestic is-

sue insular, xenophobic and even racist.

Before November’s election, The Associated Press is examining some of Trump’s biggest immigration policy changes, from halting asylum to stepping back from America’s humanitarian role.

PARIS (AP) — A French doctor warned Monday that his country has “lost control of the epidemic,” a day after health authorities reported more than 52,000 new coronavirus cases as nations across Europe enact more sweeping restrictions to try to slow surging infection rates.

Spain — the first European country to surpass 1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases — declared a state of emergency Sunday that included a nationwide overnight curfew, a cap of six people on social gatherings and possible travel bans in and out of the hardest-hit regions.

The effect was clear on Barcelona’s famed Las Ramblas promenade, which was deserted Sunday night when it normally would have been teeming with people.

tors in Naples protested a locally imposed 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and clashed with police. On Saturday night, far-right and neo-fascist groups led a similar protest in Rome against a curfew. Another protest is planned for Tuesday in Milan.

Dr. Jean-François Delfraissy, president of the scientific council that advises the French government on the virus, said the country is in a “very difficult, even critical situation.”

“There probably are more than 50,000 new cases every day. Our estimate at the Scientific Council is closer to 100,000 – twice as many,” Delfraissy told RTL radio. “Between those who aren’t tested and asymptomatic patients, we’re close to that number of cases. This means the virus is spreading extremely fast.”

France declared a state of emergency earlier this month and has been imposing more and more restrictions since September.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — As coronavirus infections reached new heights in Iran this month, overwhelming its hospitals and driving up its death toll, the country’s health minister gave a rare speech criticizing his own government’s refusal to enforce basic health measures.

“We asked for fines to be collected from anyone who doesn’t wear a mask,” Saeed Namaki said last week, referring to the government’s new mandate for Tehran, the capital.

“But go and find out how many people were fined. We said close roads, and yet how many did they close?”

Namaki’s speech, lamenting the country’s “great suffering” and “hospitals full of patients,” clearly laid the blame for the virus’ resurgence at the government’s door — a stark contrast to the usual speeches from officials who point the finger at the public’s defiance of restrictions.

But one day later, the minister had a vastly different message.

“We should not cause panic for people in vain,” Namaki said in a speech carried by the semi-official ISNA news agency. “We should never announce that we don’t have empty (hospital) beds. We do have empty beds.”

The rhetorical about-face is typical of Iranian leaders’ inconsistent response to the pandemic that many see as helping to fuel the virus’ spread. Experts say the mixed messages reflect the fact that the leadership has little room to impose severe restrictions that would damage an already fragile economy — and thus stoke public anger.

“The country is already under such pressure, and Iranians are already policed,” said Sanam Vakil, a researcher on Iran at Chatham House, a London-based policy institute.

Hagedorn continues on by saying, “Minnesotans care deeply about their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.”

“I support the Second Amendment so that Americans can protect themselves and their families,” says Hagedorn. “I also support the long-time tradition of hunting that is a favored pas-

As for his views on agriculture, Hagedorn wants fewer trade barriers and new global markets and works closely with other politicians, including President Donald Trump, in order to create new policies regarding the expansion of trade.

Lastly, Hagedorn says, “As your representative, one of my main priorities is to decrease the reach of government on your life.” Hagedorn is fighting to decrease taxes and rolling back excessive regulations.

Right now, both candidates are continuously working hard to secure votes.

Hagedorn has support as the incumbent from those that want to keep him in office.

He is also going door-to door, touring local businesses, and visiting the towns within his districts to gain more votes.

Maverick LOL Team Competes in First Varsity Tryouts DANIEL MCELROY Staff Writer Minnesota State University, Mankato’s League of Legends club team from the MavLoL RSO had their first tryout for the Varsity Esports team this weekend at the Drury Esports Invitational. The players trying out are being evaluated on how well they work with each other and how they communicate, rather than overall performance.

The online tournament, hosted by Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, invited fourteen schools who are all members of the National Association of Collegiate Esports.

Teams from Western Kentucky University, St. Clair University, and Indiana Tech are just a few of the participants to take part in the two-day long event.

The Mavericks were placed into one of two groups with six other teams in a single round robin. The top four teams from each group advance to the knockout stage where teams will play in several best of three series’ in an attempt to advance to the finals.

This week, the dorm’s WOW events are sure to get everyone in the spooky Halloween spirit, even though there’s snow on the ground. With the power of event choices being in the hands of the Community Advisors in the dorms, there is a lot of creativity that goes behind each event.

“We always try to choose something the students want,” said Preska CA and MNSU student Sarah Shogren. “It’s a great opportunity for the students to have fun.” Commented MSU student Emily Longtin.

As for the WOW events this week, both the McElroy and Preska dorms are doing Trick or Treating for the students.

Podcasts to Help You Get Through the Day DESTINY KEMPF Staff Writer In recent years, podcasts, digital audio files, have gained popularity, as there are a large variety of topics that are discussed through this medium.

Even though podcasts are typically free and are available on numerous streaming services, Minnesota State University, Mankato students themselves do not seem to be as interested in this form of media.

Many students stated how they would rather listen to music or watch specific TV shows or movies on various streaming services. Other students claimed that their lack of listening to podcasts was due to “just not having time” as they are trying to focus on studying and their schoolwork.

Despite this, MNSU Mankato itself has many podcast series of its own that caters to many different students.

In August 2019, MNSU faculty member David Engen and Century College faculty member Robert Jersak created the 12-episode podcast “Finding Your Place” for incoming, first-generation and first-year college students.

This podcast focuses on the challenging issues of the college experience and aims to make the transition to college much easier for students.

Because of the online transition for classes beginning in April of this year, Students Raj Manadhar and Sherwin Bothello created their podcast titled, “CyberAware Podcast”.

With ten episodes already created, this podcast focuses on informing others about cybersecurity tips they should follow and recent news in a fun, engaging way. Students and anyone else interested can listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Youtube.

The University radio station, KMSU, airs “FFFoxy Podcast” every night from 11pm to 1am. The FFFoxy Podcast discusses a wide range of underground and experimental music with regular artist interviews, label profiles, in-studio guests, and live performances.

MNSU’s Diversity and Inclusion team has put together a podcast called “Maverick Inclusion Dial”. Here, they explore diversity through the lens of

students, faculty and staff, alumni, and special guests. To stay up-to-date on everything, the podcast comes out with weekly episodes.

To assist families with the changes made to orientation during this time of COVID-19, the University created a podcast called, “Minnesota State Family Orientation Podcast”. This is a 14-episode podcast focused on guiding families through what to expect on their student’s journey through college.

Many University staff have also been featured in specific episodes of podcasts. This includes Interim Director of Latinx Affairs, Sara Aguilar, appearing on the podcast Starting to Feel Better. Furthermore, Minnesota State students Louisa Hall and Ellie Teigs and instructors Dr. Karla Lassonde and Dr. Emily Stark are from the Communicating Psychological Science Course.

They appear on the podcast, PsychSessions: Conversations about Teaching N’ Stuff.

It’s always worth giving something new a try, and podcasts are fairly easy to give a shot. With discussions about murder mysteries, advice, comedy, and politics, it’s almost impossible to not find a podcast you would love. Listening to these while working out, driving in the car, or even cleaning the house are perfect times to give podcasts a try.

An unfortunate early solo kill for University of Monatana’s mid laner would snowball the game as the Mavericks tried to drag out the game a little longer to hit their power-spikes, but could not survive long enough and started the first half of their day with an 0-3 record.

Starting jungler and graduate student in sport management, Noah ‘Peekaboo’ Micke, was only looking forward and trying to figure out how to pull out a win. “I wanted to be on a stronger jungler [character],” Micke said. “I felt like it was on me to turn the day around for us.”

After a long break and mental reset for the Mavericks, they were able to pull out their first win of the day against St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees. The players were able to put together their best teamwork performance after a massively winning draft from the help of their coach Ali “Gegabyte” Abulizz. They would use this momentum going into possibly the toughest opponents they would play so far in Illinois College.

Illinois College came into this matchup 4-1 on the day with their only loss being to Blinn College. Illinois College went into this game with a questionable, very shortranged draft, while the Mavericks had a massive, front line, hard-engage, and plenty of damage.

MNSU showed just how

well they can work together through their communication and individual skill. The Mavericks would pull out the win in an eventful 31 minute game.

The final game of the day would be against the Blinn College Buccaneers, who went into this match with a 5-1 record. Blinn College picked a late game scaling composition with the likes of Kassadin in the mid lane and Gangplank in the top lane, while the Mavericks relied on their hard-engage from Hecarim, Sivir, and Lulu.

Mechanical misplays would be the ultimate downfall of the Mavericks in this matchup, as they would lose early skirmishes to put themselves behind in gold before they could get to the point of teamfighting.

The Mavericks showed a valiant effort in their tryout but fell short of making it out of the group stage with a final record of 2-4 on the day.

Although that doesn’t mean that the entire day was a total waste.

The second day of the tournament proved to be just as exciting as the first with Illinois College and St. Clair University battling it out in the finals. St. Clair University would come out on top with a 2-1 victory over Illinois College.

Tryouts for Minnesota State University, Mankato will be wrapping throughout the week with the hopes to have the team finalized by this Friday, October 30.

Sometimes the Community Advisors go to the different rooms in the dorms, knock on the door, and leave candy for the residences. There would be signs on the doors of the rooms to let them know who wants to participate and who doesn’t.

Other times the students would go to the front office or common area to get the candy.

In McElroy’s case, they’re doing the former choice.

As for Preska, they are doing even more than the Trick or Treating event. There’s also going to be a CA Costume Contest.

These advisors will dress up in spooky or even comical costumes and the students will then vote on which one is the best. In addition, there are going to be games provided for the students to participate in.

Julia Sears and Stadium Heights dorms are allowing their residents to participate in the Crawford WOW event this week.

The Crawford WOW this week is an annual tradition

they have hosted throughout the years, which is the Crawford Haunted Trail. To stay in the Halloween spirit, the only things necessary for entry are masks, closed toed shoes and a ticket. All the tickets are free online or on the Q Code on the posters they have posted.

In the past, this haunted event was hosted indoors in the Crawford Basement, which is rumored to really be haunted, but this year will take place behind lot 1 on the MSU Fitness Trail by the volleyball fields to follow the COVID-19 regulations.

While Halloween itself isn’t necessarily for everyone, the WOW events overall are very well received by those who live there.

“It’s a lot of fun to be with people. It’s a great atmosphere with music always playing,” commented MSU student Emily Russo, who likes to regularly attend WOW events.

Adding onto this, MNSU student Avery Tamm stated, “I like going to the WOW’s.

They’re fun and I like how they’re never really the same.”

Celebrities in Politics: Biden or Trump?

SYDNEY BERGGREN Staff Writer This year’s election is set to be historic no matter the outcome, as we navigate life during a pandemic and rising social tensions.

With election day less than two weeks away, public figures, from movie-stars to award-winning singers, are becoming more outspoken with their voting choices, whether for Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden and his possibly history-making running mate Senator Kamala Harris, or Republican incumbent nominees President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Many stars have come out in support for Biden and Harris, including but not limited to Jennifer Aniston, Hailey Bieber, Taylor Swift, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jonathan Van Ness, Tom Hanks, and Chrissy Tiegan and husband John Legend.

Swift stated to V Magazine, “I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance

When asked for her feelings on the subject, MNSU student Sam TaBelle stated, “I don’t really care that much, since I have no impact on their votes.”

A couple of Tabelle’s friends echoed the same statement, although they appreciated some of the celebrities’ statements.

Less have publicly come out in support for the Trump and Pence campaign, but Jon Voight, Scott Biao, Kirsty Alley, Kid Rock, and 50 Cent are among the names who have.

Voight has consistently posted his support of Trump and Pence by asking his followers to join him in reelecting the Republican Candidate in November.

Singer Kid Rock joined Donald Trump Jr. for a campaign event on September 14 in support of President Trump’s reelection. He has been a vocal

supporter of Trump for a long time, having visited him in the White House and enjoyed rounds of golf together in the past.

Rapper, actor and producer 50 Cent showed his support to Trump through an Instagram post, captioned, “I don’t care Trump doesn’t like black people. 62% are you out of ya f--ing mind,” citing Biden’s tax plan.

There has been much controversy over ‘Parks & Rec’ and Marvel actor Chriss Pratt’s political stance, as he didn’t attend the “Voters Assemble,” fundraiser event that many other Marvel actors were a part of.

However, Pratt has never come out publicly with his political views. He donated money to former President Barack Obama’s campaign back in 2012, but the church he attends is said to have anti-LGBTQ+ views, which Pratt denied.

In 2017, he stated, “I don’t feel represented by either side,” but there is no guarantee of who Pratt is voting for in this coming election.

Sterling K. Brown Finds His Balance in When to Speak Out NEW YORK (AP) — Season five of NBC’s “This Is Us,” debuts Tuesday and viewers will get to see the Pearson family as they navigate both the pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement. Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall Pearson, says he can relate to how his character — a Black man who was adopted into a white family —feels in the aftermath of the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, as his white TV relatives look to him on what they should do to make him feel better.

Brown says he received “tons of phone calls from white friends saying, ‘What can I do? Let me know? Is there something I should be doing?’ and it’s like, ‘Guys, I appreciate where your heart is, I really do, but I’ve got like every other white person calling me saying this. AP: This is a somewhat recent shift for you, too.

Brown: For the first 14, 15 years of my career it was just show up, say your lines and then you go home. Now, in the past five-six years it’s been like, ‘Well, what do you think?’ But, don’t cry for me Argentina. Sometimes the best comment you can make is to have no comment. Don’t speak about things you’re not as versed in.

AP: What was your long hiatus from “This Is Us” like when you’re usually working on other projects?

NEW YORK (AP) — Last year as Bruce Springsteen reflected on the death of his friend and teenage bandmate George Theiss, who died in 2018, he grabbed his guitar and pen and began writing a song about being the sole living member of his first band.

He wrote about the New Jersey clubs where the Castiles played their first shows. And the flannel shirts and thrift store jeans he and his bandmates wore onstage. Reminiscing about his first musical experiences as well as his longtime friends who have died, 71-year-old Springsteen sings the refrain: “Somewhere deep into the heart of the crowd/I’m the last man standing now.”

“Last Man Standing”

brought the emotions out of The Boss, and after writing it, more songs came. The album “Letter to You,” released last week, was born.

“It was the key to the rest of the record,” Springsteen said of “Last Man Standing,” the first song he wrote for his new album. “My friend George passed away. Him and I were the last guys from my first band, which meant it left me sort of on my own.”

Alone, he wrote songs about his off-and-on friendship with Theiss, who invited a teenage Springsteen to join the Castiles as its guitarist six decades ago. Tension rose in the young band as Springsteen began to move to the front of the stage, outshining Theiss.
