The key to the modern world after college CDC helps students develop professionalism and communication skills MARJAN HUSSEIN STAFF WRITER The University academic school year has begun with bright new faces joining the campus of Minnesota State University Mankato, essentially bringing with them a unique vibrance to the start of the semester. College is a journey that takes one on the route of discovering the career pathway they plan to take. College allows one to get involved in various activities such as volunteering, internships, part-time jobs only to mention a few while balancing it out with acquiring a degree in a given field. These activities shape the individual’s mindset giving them a clear understanding of what it is they plan to achieve. The Career Development Center (CDC) is an ideal resource that provides students as well as alumni tools to successfully navigate

their career pathways. The CDC is located on the second floor of the Wigley Administration Building. Professionalism and communication are key aspects in the modern world as they cut across every single field. Jessica Castellanos, a career advisor at the CDC states that the CDC guides students, nurturing them in a sense to enable them to present themselves as credible personnel while balancing this with other characteristics of their personality. “Even if you are required to be completely professional in some instances, at the end of the day you are still you,” Castellanos said. The CDC has several ways in which it acts as resource for students such as aiding them with changing majors, self-assessments, graduate planning and many more specifically designed to target whatever careers they may want to venture into. Castellanos states that two of the main ways the

CDC provides students with tools to effectively navigate a student’s career pathway both involve appointments. The first would require a student to set up an interview that is about an hour long. During this appointment the student gets to fully interact with a career advisor and go over whatever issue or questions they may have. The second type of appointment is the Quick Stop, which is more suited for students as college can be a bit hectic at times. This is basically Monday through Thursday where students can stop in for 10-15 minutes and have a quick discussion with a career advisor. The CDC also utilizes the Handshake website, formerly MavJobs to advertise, interact and communicate with students. Handshake is an exceptional job search tool for Mavericks where one can easily log in with their StarID & password, complete their profile and search for part-time jobs, full-time

jobs, internships, work-study, career jobs in addition to much more. The CDC also plays host to annual events and the two this fall are the

John McCain: a soldier, senator, and citizen JOSHUA SCHEUTZ STAFF WRITER On Saturday, August 25, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) passed away. In his final letter to the nation, the former soldier and prisoner of war addressed the nation with the same integrity, courage, and valor that characterized his life of public service. Addressing an increasingly polarized and fearful nation, the former presidential candidate gave his counsel. “Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit.

We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.” Indeed, the senator’s farewell letter marks the end of an illustrious career in combat, politics, and civic life. He was born in 1936, the son of naval officer, John McCain Sr. and Roberta McCain. At the U.S. Naval Academy, McCain showed his leadership and integrity, standing up for other students who had suffered from bullying. In 1958, McCain began his military career in the U.S. Navy, in which he would serve for over two decades. During the Vietnam War, McCain volunteered for a

combat position, and ran numerous bombing raids in North Vietnamese territory. In 1967, on one of those raids, McCain was ejected from his

plane and captured by the Vietnamese, who imprisoned him in the Hoa Lo Prison, then dubbed, the “Hanoi Hilton.” During his time as a prisoner

of war, McCain was regularly beaten, deprived of food, not given adequate medical care, subject to interrogations and other forms of torture. He was held for five years, and only released in 1973. McCain was made Naval Liason to the United States Senate in 1977, and retired from the military four years thereafter. His first political office was in the U.S. House of Representatives, which he won in 1982. After serving in the House for four years, McCain ran for the Senate and won. He began his time in the Senate

UN team: Myanmar military chiefs should face ‘genocide’ case GENEVA (AP) — Investigators working for the U.N.’s top human rights body said Monday that Myanmar military leaders should be prosecuted for genocide against Rohingya Muslims, taking the unusual step of identifying by name six of those it says were behind systematic crimes targeting the ethnic minority. The call, accompanying a first report by the team of investigators, amounts to some of the strongest language yet from U.N. officials who have denounced alleged human rights violations in Myanmar since a bloody crackdown began last August. The three-member “fact-finding mission” and their team, working under a mandate from the U.N.backed Human Rights Council, meticulously assembled hundreds of accounts from expatriate Rohingya, as well as satellite footage and other information for the report. “The military’s contempt for human life, dignity and freedom — for international law in general — should be a cause of concern for the entire population of Myanmar,

and to the international community as a whole,” said fact-finding mission chair Marzuki Darusman, a former Indonesian attorney-general, at a news conference. The council created the mission in March last year — nearly six months before a string of deadly rebel attacks on security and police posts set off a crackdown that drove Rohingya to flee into neighboring Bangladesh. More than 700,000 have fled in the past year. The team compiled accounts of crimes including gang rape, the torching of hundreds of villages, enslavement, and killings of children — some before their eyes of their own parents. The team was not granted access to Myanmar and has decried a lack of cooperation or even response from the government, which received an early copy of the report. The team cited a “conservative” estimate from aid group Reporters Without Borders that some 10,000 people were killed in the violence, but outside investigators have had no access to the affected regions — making a precise

accounting elusive, if not impossible. Above all, the investigators said the situation in Myanmar should be referred to the International Criminal Court, and if not, to a special tribunal. Last week, Myanmar’s government rejected any cooperation with the ICC, to which it is not a party.

China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council with veto power over whether the issue will be brought before the ICC, has been reticent about condemning Myanmar’s government during the crisis. U.N. leaders, foreign government officials, and human rights watchers have

for months cited evidence of genocide in Myanmar, and the United States late last year said that “ethnic cleansing” was occurring in the country also known as Burma. But few experts have

Law firm criticizes ICE for toddler’s death after release HOUSTON (AP) — A law firm representing the family of a toddler reported to have died after being released from an immigration detention facility issued new information Monday about what it called a “needless and devastating loss.” Washington-based Arnold & Porter’s statement Monday identifies the child by her first name, Mariee, and says she was 21 months old when she died in May. A Vice News story also released Monday said Mariee arrived with her mother, Yazmin Juarez, at the detention center in Dilley, Texas, in March, and died about six weeks after her release. According to Vice News, Mariee began to develop a cough and had a fever that reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). The baby’s health improved, but then worsened until she and her mother were released. The law firm released a timeline that says Juarez sought medical treatment for Mariee six days after they entered Dilley because the baby had congestion and a cough. Ten days after they

arrived, Mariee had lost two pounds (almost 1 kilogram), nearly 8 percent of her body weight. Mariee was still coughing and vomiting clear liquid two days before she and her

They were released March 25, and took a flight to New Jersey, where Juarez’s mother lives. The next day, they went to an emergency room, the law firm said. The baby was hospitalized over the next several weeks and eventually transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Reports circulated online this month of a child dying after being released from the Dilley facility, which holds hundreds of immigrant mothers and children. Initial reports that the child died at Dilley were erroneous. The law firm had refused to release information about the case for several weeks until Monday. Advocates for immigrants have long complained about problems with accessing medical care in immigration

facilities like the one at Dilley, one of two family detention centers in Texas. Arnold & Porter blames U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for detaining Mariee and her mother in a facility “with unsafe conditions.” The law firm also accuses ICE of releasing a “gravely ill” child “without medical treatment or guidance,” and said it was considering a lawsuit. But Vice News says five pediatricians who reviewed details of Mariee’s care say that after contracting the illness, she received

treatment that was consistent with what they would have done. The story says all five doctors believed Mariee’s “recommended course of treatment would have been the same had she not been in ICE custody.” “It’s reasonable care,” said Dr. Ewen Wang, associate director of pediatric emergency medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. “It didn’t sound like she was in the best of health,

Two slain in Jacksonville tragedy JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A California man who played video games to earn money for college and a West Virginian whose e-sports winnings helped support his young family were slain at a Florida tournament where a gunman specifically targeted fellow gamers, authorities said Monday. David Katz, 24, of Baltimore fatally shot himself after killing the two men and wounding 10 others Sunday inside a pizzeria and bar that were hosting a “Madden NFL 19” tournament. Katz was among about 130 gamers attending the competition at a mall in Jacksonville. Court records in Maryland reviewed by The Associated Press show Katz had previously been hospitalized for mental illness. Divorce filings from his parents say that as an adolescent he was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and was prescribed antipsychotic and antidepressant medications. Katz carried two handguns, including one equipped with a laser sight, into the tournament venue but only fired one of them, Jacksonville Sheriff

Mike Williams told a news conference Monday. He said surveillance video revealed Katz was the only shooter, but his motive remains unknown. “The suspect clearly targeted other gamers who were in the back room” of the pizzeria, Williams said. “The suspect walked past patrons who were in other parts of the business and

Castellanos states that this would be an excellent opportunity for students to practice presenting themselves as professionals not only in behavior but also in outlook. The Handshake website would also play a key role in these events as a student can check out which employers will be present and choose what tables they ought to check out even before the event. Castellanos also says that one can simply register online for the event and especially for the Career & Internship Expo being a twoday event, one can check which colleges are holding an exhibition on a specific day. “Social Networking is an issue that students should be vary cautious of when applying to various jobs,” she said. Employers are keen on their brand being represented honorably thus they keep an eye out on whatever their employees may be posting online. Castellanos says that with this being the modern age of technology one should always

strive to keep an upright background and basically have fun in a responsible manner. “Students scarcity of knowledge about the CDC resources and the idea that the CDC places students in jobs which is not the case are some of the key challenges the CDC has,” Castellanos said. She stated that diversifying, in addition to informing more students about the CDC and its resources, is one of the key aspects they’re focusing on She stated a great quote by Wayne Gretzky; You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, thus she highly encourages students to grasp opportunities that swing their way. focused his attention on the gamers.” Investigators determined Katz bought both guns in Baltimore within the past month. But Williams said there’s no indication he planned the shooting before Sunday. In a statement Monday evening EA CEO Andrew Wilson said he is canceling the remaining qualifier events to focus on safety. “We have made a decision to cancel our three remaining Madden Classic qualifier events while we run a comprehensive review of safety protocols for

competitors and spectators.” The sheriff had previously said nine people were wounded by gunfire, but told reporters Monday the total was 10. All of them, he said, were expected to recover. The sheriff’s office identified the dead as 22-year-old Elijah Clayton of Woodland Hills, California, and 28-year-old Taylor Robertson of Giles, West Virginia. Clayton’s parents and other relatives gathered outside police headquarters Monday in Jacksonville to give a brief statement. A cousin, Brandi Pettijohn, said

the family was “devastated by yet another senseless act of gun violence.” She said Clayton was a good, peaceful man who never had a fistfight. “He loved football, and out of all the videogames he could play, he settled on and mastered ‘Madden,’” Pettijohn said. “He made a good living gaming, and he saved his earnings so he could afford to go to college to continue his education.” Robertson, who used the gamer tag “Spotmeplzzz,” won the Madden Classic tournament in 2016. GENOCIDE Continued from page 2 studied the issue as in-depth, and in such an official way, as the fact-finding mission with a mandate from the 46-nation council. The U.S. State Department, which has yet to declare a genocide in Myanmar, said the U.N. report added to a “growing body of information indicating widespread human rights abuses by the Burmese military and other security forces.” A spokesperson, who was not authorized to be quoted by name and requested anonymity, said the United States, with allies and partners, was exploring a “broad range of options” to ensure justice for victims and “appropriate consequences” for perpetrators. The United Nations does not apply the word “genocide” lightly. The team’s assessment suggests the crimes against the Rohingya could meet the strict legal definition, used to highlight and condemn statesupported abuses in places like Bosnia, Rwanda and Sudan’s Darfur region. Human rights watchers say that determining “genocidal intent” is perhaps the most difficult criteria to meet:

In essence, it’s the task of assessing the mindsets of perpetrators to determine if ethnicity, race, religion or another attribute had motivated them. “The crimes in Rakhine state, and the manner in which they were perpetrated, are similar in nature, gravity and scope to those that have allowed genocidal intent to be established in other contexts,” the report said, alluding to a region of Myanmar that is home for many Rohingya.

exclusion against Rohingya people; an “oppressive context;” and the “level of organization indicating a plan for destruction.” The investigators cited six Myanmar military leaders as “priority subjects” for possible prosecution, including Commander-inChief Min Aung Hlaing. A longer list of names is to be kept in the office of the U.N. human rights chief for possible use in future judicial proceedings. The United States and European

“The investigators cited six Myanmar military leaders as “priority subjects” for possible prosecution, including Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing.”

Adding into their assessment: The extreme brutality of the crimes; “hate rhetoric” and specific speech by perpetrators and military commanders; policies of

Union have already slapped sanctions on some Myanmar military leaders, though Min Aung Hlaing is not among them. “The main perpetrator,

the people that we want the spotlight on, is the Tatmadaw,” said mission member Radhika Coomaraswamy, a Sri Lankan former U.N. undersecretarygeneral, referring to Myanmar’s military. Christopher Sidoti, an Australian human rights expert, acknowledged that no “smoking gun” linked the six military leaders directly to orders to carry out genocide, but pointed to inferences of their role based on a strict chain of command in Myanmar. They called for the creation of a special body, or “mechanism,” to keep watch on the still-evolving human rights situation in Myanmar. They said the United Nations’ own role in the country since 2011 should be reviewed to see if the world body did all it could to prevent such a crisis. They also faulted Aung San Suu Kyi for not using her role as head of Myanmar’s government, nor her “moral authority” — she is a Nobel peace prize laureate — to stop the events in embattled Rakhine state. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is

scheduled to give a briefing Tuesday during a Security Council commemoration of the anniversary of the violent crackdown on the Rohingya. Guterres also has described what happened in Myanmar as ethnic cleansing. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Monday that Guterres urged all U.N. bodies and the international community to seriously consider the experts’ report recommendations. The determination of whether “a genocide” occurred must be made by “an international judicial body,” Dujarric said. “The secretary-general has for a long time underscored the violations of human rights in Myanmar” and stressed “that accountability is essential for genuine reconciliation,” he said. There was praise for the report from refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, that house hundreds of thousands of Rohingya from across the border.

MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR School is finally here. Little kids are getting their school supplies, high schoolers are trading their schedules and we- well, we’re already well into our classes. For students, and college students especially, it seems, we have a tough time getting excited for our classes. It would seem that college students would be more excited to start their classes as we are optionally choosing to put ourselves through courses to get our education. But for us it’s mostly a strain in our already stressful lives. After all, students are not known to be independently wealthy, and now we not only have part time jobs, but we now also have classes and extra curricular activities to worry about. I, though, am super stoked for school to start. I’m one of those people who get a rush from buying school supplies and can’t sleep before the first day of classes because I am so excited to learn. I do go through some things that make me feel more excited,

though. For one, I definitely have to hype myself up. I look at all the classes I’m taking and write down my schedule so I have a hard copy. I try to imagine the things I’ll be learning in each class, and how they’re helping me get the English degree I so desire. This really helps when I’m dreading all the work I’ll have to do come winter. Secondly, and this may sound weird, but during the school year I like to take nice pictures of my study spaces (featuring my ever-present coffee) and post it online. This motivates me to study more often and keep my study space clean, and I get excited to study at times because I know I’ll want to take an artsy picture. Another thing I do is think about all the nice places I can study and do homework,

and I try to make it a goal during the school year to study at those places. For example, every year I try to go to the Coffee Hag a few times. It’s a nice little setting that not only gets me out of my apartment, but also gets me excited about studying (mostly because then I can order my favorite drink). The last thing I do to try to get myself excited about school, is thinking about all the cool events that go on during the school year. Don’t get me wrong, summers are fun, but I love attending the multicultural nights and the homecoming events. They’re some of the most fun I’ve had all year. Thinking about going to events like that with my boyfriend or my friends gets me really excited that school is beginning again. Plus these events give me an excuse to see my friends and take a

break from studying, which we all need! Everyone does things differently, and everyone definitely tries to motivate themselves in different ways. I try to think of the things that are fun during the school year, rather than dwell on the bad things- like having winter for, like, 8 months. Or having perpetually chapped lips and dry skin. I find that if I do these things it also helps me perform much better academically, and that’s definitely something we should all want as students. I also think that being happy and excited about school is definitely correlated in doing well in school. And hopefully other students at MSU can take my list and try to put their own little spin on it.

“Are excited for school to start again? Why?”

EDEN, BIO CHEM “I’m excited because it’s my first year.”

UN Human Rights Council calls for Myanmar genocide trial JOSHUA SCHEUTZ Staff Writer Investigators from the United Nations Human Rights Council have called for Myanmar to be punished for committing genocide against the Rohingya people, a Muslim ethnic minority centered in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. According to a report from Reuters, investigators determined that top generals in Myanmar should be prosecuted for war crimes. Myanmar’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is facing blame for the attacks on the Rohingya. Many Rohingya have been driven from their villages by the military, on the grounds of preventing terrorism. While there have been reports of radicalization in the Rakhine State, they are sparse. The military has even stooped to the level of raping and massacring women and children, utilizing state terrorism as a means of intimidating and attacking civilians. According to Radhika Coomeraswamy, a member of the U.N. panel who

They are used as a tactic of war,”. In addition to physical violence, the Rohingya are also systematically discriminated against. They are denied citizenship. the military’s actions. In addition to state terrorism, the chaos and violence have also created opportunities for human traffickers. In June 2018, a report from the U.S. State Department stated that refugees were being exploited by human traffickers. Those in camps near the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh were especially vulnerable, according to CNN. Members of the U.N. panel have also accused social media websites, especially Facebook, of being complicit in the crisis. The report stated that “Although improved in recent months, Facebook’s response has been slow and ineffective. The extent to which Facebook posts and messages have led to real-world discrimination and violence must be independently and thoroughly examined,”. Amongst the human rights and aid organizations working to help the Rohingya are Unicef, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Rescue Committee.

U.S. and Mexico to reach NAFTA deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and Mexico agreed on Monday to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), putting pressure on Canada to agree to new terms on auto trade and dispute settlement rules to remain part of the threenation pact. Auto stocks soared and the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rallied to record highs on the expectation that Canada would sign onto the deal and ease the economic uncertainty caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to ditch the 1994 accord. Details of gains and concessions in the deal were only starting to emerge on Monday. Trump threatened he still could put tariffs on Canadian-made cars if Canada did not join its neighbors and warned he expected concessions on Canada’s dairy protections. “I think with Canada, frankly, the easiest we can do is to tariff their cars coming in. It’s a tremendous amount of money and it’s a very simple negotiation. It could end in one day and we take in a lot

of money the following day,” Trump said. Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed trade in a telephone call on Monday and “agreed to continue productive conversations,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement. Negotiations among the three partners, whose mutual trade totals more than $1 trillion annually, have dragged on for more than a year, putting pressure on the Mexican peso MXN= and the Canadian dollar CAD=. Both currencies gained against the U.S. dollar after Monday’s announcement. The political stakes are high for all three countries. Trump and Republicans in the U.S. Congress up for re-election in November want to ensure farmers and other voters whose jobs depend on trade with Canada and Mexico that the deal is sealed. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto wants to sign the agreement before leaving office at the end of November, and Trudeau faces a national election expected by October 2019.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to travel to Washington for talks on Tuesday. Her spokesman said Canada would sign only a new agreement that is good for the country. Trump’s economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, told reporters the deal with Mexico should serve as a “reset” for talks with Canada. 90-DAY WINDOW If talks with Canada are not wrapped up by the end of this week, Trump plans to notify Congress that he

has reached a deal with Mexico, but would be open to Canada joining, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told reporters. The White House said Trump will sign the deal in 90 days. Congress has to approve it. “There are still issues with Canada but I think they could be resolved very quickly,” a senior trade official told Reuters in an interview. Some Republicans in Congress called the deal a positive step but said Canada must be part of the new pact.

Trudeau spoke to Pena Nieto on Sunday and shared their commitment to reaching a successful conclusion of NAFTA “for all three parties,” the prime minister’s office said. Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray told a news conference in Washington that if Canada and the United States do not reach an agreement on NAFTA, “we already know that there will still be a deal between Mexico and the United States.”

Fall sports kicks off for the Mavericks After a summer in hiatus, the Maverick sports teams look to bring the heat this fall sports season

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER With summer over, summer ending, and school beginning, the fall sports season is finally in full gear. The volleyball and soccer are ready to kick-off their respected season, with the golf team and football teams also beginning to practice and prepare for their first matchups of the season. For the volleyball team this year, which wrapped up their opener in the University of Southern Indiana (USI) Invitational against Ohio Dominican. They swept the Panthers in three sets and improve their record to 4-0. The Mavericks started out strong in the first set, winning 25-13. The next two were a lot closer. 25-22 and 25-20. Juniors Morgan Olson and Joie Veldman were the stars of the night, combining for 26 Kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. The Mavericks face the Truman State Bulldogs on Friday. Mavericks are the #1 ranked team in the NSIC conference and #20 nationally, to begin the year. This Thursday, they take on Sioux Falls at home to kick off the year. The men’s golf team is also projected to have a successful season. The squad is ranked #1 in this year’s NSIC golf poll. Led by last year’s coach of the year, Bryant Black, the team is looking to 5-peat this year, That’s unprecedented. With four championships in four years, the Mavericks have made the NCAA postseason tournament 17 times since 1970. Two key players to look out for are seniors J.J Svac and Matt Bennett. Svac led the team with a 75.3-mark last year, with Bennett right behind. Other golfers include Bryce Thompson, Ethan Krause, along with many transfers including Nick Dittrich and Ben Dirck. The golf team travels to Missouri for the Central Missouri Mule Invitational on September 10th, to begin the year.

Finally, the team that will make the most fireworks, the Minnesota State football team. The team with the biggest following kicks off the year with a home game against Southwest Minnesota State at 6:05 PM this Thursday night under the lights of Blakeslee Stadium. The team comes into the year ranked #1 in the D2Football.com Preseason Poll, and third in AFCA’s poll. The most exciting news as of late is the announcement of Lavell Jackson as defensive backs coach. Jackson has quite the resume for coaching. He has been the defensive coordinator and associate head coach for Bethany College, and was the defensive backs coach for Missouri Valley College. This fall looks to be an exciting one for the Mavericks sports teams this fall. Whether you’re into spiking, kicking, driving, or throwing the ball this season, there is almost always going to be something worth watching this season.

Boxer exits ring seconds after fight begins PBC boxer Curtis Harper leaves ring after rumors of not being paid enough for fight last Friday in Minneapolis

KEVIN KORBEL SPORTS EDITOR It was another ordinary night fighting for fellow boxers and boxing fans last Friday night. The fans in the arena were on their feet after they’d just got done witnessing an unbelievable bout in the super welterweight class at the 154 lbs weight class between Jamontay Clark (130) and Jeison Rosario “Banana” (15-1-1) go a full ten rounds. But just as fans were getting settled in to enjoy the heavyweight bout between Curtis Harper and Efe Ajagba on Friday night, the fight was over. Seconds after the boxers touched gloves and the bell rang at their Premier Boxing Championship bout last Friday in Minneapolis, MN, Harper turned around and exited the ring – leaving the crowd and his opponent stunned. Harper walked out of the ring in protest because he believed he wasn’t getting paid enough to fight Ajagba, according to FOX Sports. The 30-year-old told Bobby Brunette from the Minnesota Boxing Commission he

When Brunette said his agreement was already filed to the state, Harper walked out. Harper is likely to be suspended by Premier Boxing and will likely not get paid for the fight, according to ESPN. By default, Ajagba, of Nigeria, won his first heavyweight bout. The crowd booed and mocked Harper as he left the ring and hit the showers last Friday night. It was very unfortunate

something like this happened, especially on a night where the crowd had witnessed unbelievable fights throughout the whole night. One of the best fights of the night was at the Super Welterweight division at the 155lbs. weight class. Antonio Urista (10-2), also known as Wee Wee, took on the lengthy, six-foot six-inch tall giant in Sebastian Fundora (9-0) in this bout between two talented boxers. From the very beginning, both of them looked to try and knock out their opponent out quick-

ly, with a barrage of fists getting connecting by the following fighters. At the end of round three, it looked as if Fundora had the match one with Urista teetering on the as he took a barrage of fists to the face. Urista, who’d at one point looked to not have anything left in the tank, almost landed a knock out blow to the head

before the sound of the bell separated the two animals off each other. While Urista hung on throughout the match, it was to no avail, as Fundora was the one holding his hand

Gunman dead, kills 2 at EA Madden video game tourney JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A gunman opened fire Sunday at an online video game tournament as it was being livestreamed from a Florida mall, killing two people and then fatally shooting himself in a rampage that wounded several others, authorities said. Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said authorities believe 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore carried out the attack using at least one handgun at the Jacksonville Landing, a collection of restaurants and shops along the St. Johns River. Williams said the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot, adding final confirmation of the suspect’s identity was pending as the FBI in Baltimore aided in the investigation. Nine other people were wounded by gunfire and all were in stable condition Sunday evening after being taken to hospitals, Williams said. He added that two others were injured in the rush to flee the gunfire. Katz was in Jacksonville for the “Madden NFL 19” video game tournament, authorities said. The games maker, EA Sports, lists a David Katz as a 2017 championship winner. The competition was held in a gaming bar that shares space with a pizzeria. Viewers could watch the games online and see the players. Investigators were looking into an online video that appeared to capture the scene

right before the shooting began, Williams said. A red dot that appears to be a laser pointer is visible on the chest of a player seconds before the first of about a dozen gunshots rings out. Marquis Williams, 28, and his girlfriend, Taylor Poindexter, 26, both from Chicago, were ordering pizza at the bar when they heard the first shot around 1:30 p.m. on what had begun as a quiet Sunday afternoon. “Initially we thought it was a balloon popping, but there weren’t any balloons in the room,” said Williams, who had taken part in the tournament earlier. “Then we heard repeat shots and we took off running.” He added: “The first shot everybody just turned and looked. After the second, third and fourth shots, everybody took off and ran for the exits.” Poindexter, an aspiring gamer, said she had gone to seek experience at the tournament. She never saw the face of the shooter, but added, “We did see him with two hands on a gun walking back just popping rounds.” It was then, they said, that people trampled others in the panic to escape. Both ran to a nearby restaurant where workers were waving people inside. They hid in a bathroom until police arrived. Shay Kivlen (pictured) spoke yesterday about the shooting at The Jacksonville Landing on Sunday, in Jacksonville, Fla. Kivlen told The Associated Press that the suspect, David Katz, didn’t talk much with fellow gamers, either online or when they met face-to-face for Madden tournaments. Kivlen was at his Jacksonville hotel when the shooting happened. Twitter that one of his players, 19-year-old Drini Gjoka, was shot in the thumb. Gjoka tweeted: “The tourney just got shot up. Im leavinng and never coming back.” Then: “I am literally so lucky. The bullet hit my thumb. Worst day of my life.” On Sunday evening, the FBI said, its agents searched

a family home of the man authorities believed was behind the attack. Heavily armed agents, some in bulletproof vests and brandishing long guns, could be seen entering an upscale townhome complex near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. An FBI spokesman, Dave Fitz, confirmed that agents

had gone to the house of the man’s father in Baltimore. He declined to release specifics, citing the ongoing investigation. T.J. Smith, chief spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department, also said that agency was assisting law enforcement partners “with some information that has led authorities to Baltimore.”

This fight was yet the tipping point of what was yet to come. In the super welterweight weight class at the 154 lbs weight class between Jamontay Clark (13-0) and Jeison Rosario “Banana” (151-1). In this fight between two unbelievable combatants, the fight was back-and-forth by the time the bell rang. As Rosario and Clark were both connecting on punches to the body, Rosario was able to escape a blow to the head,

and counter with a punch to Clark so hard to the face that he flew out of the ring, struggling to get back inside of the ring and getting back on his feet. Surprisingly though, both these fighters were equally matched, and were able to fight a full 10 rounds. As a result of the fight, Rosario won the hearts of the judges to clinch the unanimous decision victory. The main event on this night was a fight between Jamal James (24-1) and Mahonry Montes (35-7-1). The headline of this bout was James

coming back to his hometown of Minneapolis, MN to fight, and the hometown boy didn’t fail to disappoint. Jamal James ended a 25-punch salvo and his second straight hometown victory by second-round knockout in the main event of PBC on FS1 on Friday night. He crumpled Mahonry Montes with a crippling left hook to the stomach and a head-swiveling, follow-up right uppercut before a packed house at the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “Crazy Rich Asians” is refreshing and honest RACHEAL JAEGER STAFF WRITER

Crazy Rich Asians centers around a young woman, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), who attends a wedding in Singapore with her serious boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) and is oblivious to how rich he actually is. Not only that but the moment she steps one foot on the island, she learns quickly that she does not measure up to what the family expects from her if she chooses to stay with Nick. Meanwhile Nick has his own secret goal to propose to Rachel when the timing is right. But Rachel faces conflict with Nick’s ex-girlfriends who acts nice to her face, but then backstabs her and gang up and play malicious

To binge or not to binge: “Disenchantment” Netflix’s new show is more disappointing than enchanting

LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR

Matt Groening, the creator behind shows such as The Simpsons and Futurama, is regarded as the inventor of animated television shows that are aimed for adults rather than children. When Netflix announced that they would be releasing a new original animated show from the mind of Groening, it is an understatement to say that fans were excited. Groening’s new show entitled “Disenchantment” is based within the past, unlike The Simpsons and Futurama which take place within

Netflix’s September line up “Black Panther”, “Bo Jack Horseman” and many more LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR

Yes, once again summer has come and passed. School has arrived and therefore stress and procrastination is in the air. Luckily anyone with a Netflix account can relieve their fall stress by distracting themselves with a whole new line up of Netflix films and television being released within the month of September. Netflix has just released their streaming schedule for September and it is a great month to have a Netflix account. No matter what

NETFLIX PAGE 19

ASIANS Continued from page 16 a family means more than pursuing individual passion. It is mostly because I have struggled with those conservative values in traditions with my background so in a sense, I can understand from both Nick and Rachel’s sides when it comes to feeling the pressure. While I don’t have to take over the family business, there has still been a push for me to view family as the most important and place it above following what I believe in my heart I should follow. So it is ironic that the main character should have my name, Rachel, only a different spelling and have similar conflicts. While she is an economics professor in New York who worked her way up from being the daughter of a single mom who was a real estate agent. What Rachel must eventually do is stand up to Nick’s mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh).

After Eleanor learns of Rachel’s success as an economics professor, she makes time even more miserable for Rachel. The part that made the strongest statement is when Rachel learns to make dumplings from Nick’s grandmother and Nick shows Rachel how his mother taught him the different folds. It involved an analogy of getting a baby ready for bed and tucking them in. Rachel pays the family a compliment by saying how much she appreciates the company since she did not grow up with a large family and that it was only her and her mom. Elenanor comments that something as valuable as a family does not just happen or does not come easy but that it takes sacrifice. She also took the opportunity to dig at Rachel’s profession by saying that family is worth more than pursing individual passion.

Later Rachel’s mom reveals to her about her own secrets, such as that her husband mistreated her so she ran away from China. Before she left, she had fallen in love with another man who is Rachel’s real father. Rachel asks her mom a potent question of whether or not she thinks about the man she truly loved, to which her mom replied, “Every day.” In the middle of the glamorous storytelling and the movie ending on a last-minute high note, Crazy Rich Asians is an honest glimpse at what happens below the surface. It is every subtle detail in life that no one notices. The movie reveals just how much it takes to maintain a superficial appearance from underlying securities that arouse from a person’s background if they are not dealt with.

GROENING Continued from page 16 show set within a magical kingdom should be far from. The centralplot follows Bean a rebellious princess that does meet the expectations set by her father, the king of Dreamland. Meanwhile an Elf named Elfo (Yes, that is actually his name) escapes to the real world from his elf world after being threatened to be hung for not being as happy as his fellow elves. The third main character is Luci a demon that is sent by a warlock and witch to follow Bean

and to try to steer her to become evil. The three become close friends and together they go on a self discovery to find themselves within the strange and magical kingdom they live in. The biggest difference between this show and other animated adult shows is that the story is continued from episode to episode in an overarching plot. This may be why Disenchantment’s pacing feels so slow. This also makes each episode very forgetful since each episode is slowly inching

closer to an overall plot that it doesn’t actually reach until the second to last episode. One positive attribute the show does have are the main characters and their voice actors. Princess Bean is played by Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) whose character is extremely likable and relatable. The character of Elfo, the extremely naïve elf is voiced by Nat Faxon whose character brings most of the energy to the show. However, after time the character does get a

tad bit annoying. Lastly, the stand out of the show is the sarcastic Luci voiced excellently by Eric Andre (The Eric Andre Show. The other highlight of the show is the beautiful animation. Disenchantment’s animation follows the same style as Futrama and The Simpsons except it is mixed with an aesthetic that is reminiscent to an old story book. The animation and very detailed background makes for some great world building within the show. Overall, asides from a couple episodes;

Disenchantment is boring and not very funny. However, it is nice to look at and the characters are very interesting I just wish the story was equally as interesting. Disenchatment is not binge worthy, but it is something that might be nice to put on while doing homework or other household chores.

Neil Simon, Broadway’s master of comedy, dies at 91 NEW YORK (AP) — Playwright Neil Simon, a master of comedy whose laugh-filled hits such as "The Odd Couple," ''Barefoot in the Park" and his "Brighton Beach" trilogy dominated Broadway for decades, has died. He was 91.Simon died early Sunday of complications from pneumonia at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, said Bill Evans, a longtime friend and spokesman for Shubert Organization theaters. In the second half of the 20th century, Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright, often chronicling middle class issues and fears. Starting with

"Come Blow Your Horn" in 1961 and continuing into the next century, he rarely stopped working on a new play or musical. His list of credits is staggering. The theater world quickly mourned his death , including Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein, who tweeted that Simon "could write a joke that would make you laugh, define the character, the situation, and even the world's problems."Matthew Broderick, who in 1983 made his Broadway debut in Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and his movie debut in Simon's "Max Dugan Returns," added: "I owe him a career. The theater has

lost a brilliantly funny, unthinkably wonderful writer. And even after all this time, I feel I have lost a mentor, a father figure, a deep influence in my life and work." For seven months in 1967, he had four productions running at the same time on

Broadway: "Barefoot in the Park," ''The Odd Couple," ''Sweet Charity," and "The Star-Spangled Girl."Even before he launched his theater career, he made history as one of the famed stable of writers for comedian Sid Caesar that also included Woody

In 1983, he had a Broadway theater named after him when the Alvin was rechristened the Neil Simon Theatre. In 2006, he won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which honors work that draws from the American experience. The previous year had seen a popular revival of "The Odd Couple," reuniting Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick after their enormous success in "The Producers" several years earlier.n a 1997 interview with The Washington Post, Simon reflected on his success: "I know that I have reached the pinna-

cle of rewards. There's no more money anyone can pay me that I need. There are no awards they can give me that I haven't won. I have no reason to write another play except that I am alive and I like to do it," he said. Simon had a rare stumble in the fall of 2009, when a Broadway revival of his "Brighton Beach Memoirs" closed abruptly after only nine performances because of poor ticket sales. It was to have run in repertory with Simon's "Broadway Bound," which was also canceled. The bespectacled, mild-looking Simon (described in a New York Times magazine profile as looking like an accountant or

librarian who dressed "just this side of drab") was a relentless writer — and rewriter. "I am most alive and most fulfilled sitting alone in a room, hoping that those words forming on the paper in the Smith-Corona will be the first perfect play ever written in a single draft," Simon wrote in the introduction to one of the many anthologies of his plays. He was a meticulous joke smith, peppering his plays, especially the early ones, with comic one-liners and humorous situations that critics said sometimes came at the expense of character and believability. No matter. For much of his career, audiences embraced his work,

Maverick Textbook Reserve Program?

This is a unique program and opportunity for students choosing to check out expensive textbooks for a couple of hours at a time in lieu of shelling out large sums of money for the rental, or purchase of a used or new textbook. The Minnesota State Student Association (MSSA) is the "lead partner" of the cooperative arrangement which involves the on-campus bookstore vendor, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and Library Services. Without the direct support of these two partners the program wouldn't be what it is.
