“The War on Whores” explores the misconceptions of sex work

KAITLYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER On Monday, April 29, over 125 students, faculty and community members gathered in Ostrander Auditorium to watch the film screening of “The War on Whores” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“The War on Whores” is a 2019 documentary starring Maggie McNeill, who tells her story of being persecuted as a sex worker.

The event was the first ever to be sponsored by the Sexuality Studies Minor, with the help of the LGBT Center.

It was organized by Dr. Eric Sprankle, a professor of Psychology, and Dr. Shannon Miller, a professor of Gender and Women’s studies.

The film itself explored the false assumptions many people make about sex workers. The film also discussed how many women choose to go into sex work, despite the stereotypes that they are exploited by pimps or traffickers.

Following the film screening the room was opened for a Q&A panel which featured Maggie McNeill herself.

McNeill originally received her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University

She went on to marry her favorite client and retired to Oklahoma. After her divorce in 2010 she began escorting again. She started working in sex worker activism in 2004.

In 2010, Mcneill began writing for her blog, “The Honest Courtesan” which she describes as “frank commentary from an unretired call girl.”

She has since written two books, “Ladies of the Night” published in 2014 and “The Forms of Things Unknown” published in 2017. Her books include personal anecdotes and stories about the myths and realities of sex work and the treatment of sex workers in the government and in the media.

In August 2019, I left my home in Rochester to come all the way to Mankato, a foreign place, to start my journey in a university. Even though I had come from a community college, living on my own, making new friends, and experiencing classes in my major was vastly different than what I was used to.

When I first came to Mankato, I thought I would be miserable as I saw the janky roads, the ugly buildings, and my lack of friends.

I called my sister and my friends from Rochester numerous times, crying about the lack of belonging I felt and missing home. Little did I know, that if I put myself out there that I would find many communities.

I’ve achieved a lot. I got a scholarship, an internship, numerous awards, a job promotion from a writer to a news editor, winning a presidency in an RSO. Honestly, I don’t know how I did it.

I crashed my car, I lost a lot of money through tuition, I’ve gained ten pounds, I got my heart stomped on, I cried, I cried again, I’ve felt hopeless.

On the other hand, I also got exactly what I never expected to get. I laughed, I cheered, I celebrated, I finally felt like the stud I always thought I could be. I learned a lot, and for that I’m grateful.

IS leader outlines path forward for his group post-caliphate COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — No longer burdened by territory and administration, Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi outlined the new path forward for his group: Widen your reach, connect with far-flung militant groups and exhaust your enemies with a “war of attrition.”

The deadly Easter attacks in Sri Lanka a week before his video appearance underscored this message in blood. It also highlighted the ease with which IS, like al-Qaida before it, can inflict chaos through a loosely defined brand of global jihad in the most chilling way.

That’s even after losing the relative safety of its so-called caliphate across stretches of Iraq and Syria.

“Al-Baghdadi was letting his followers know that he was prepared to lead a guerrilla insurgency in Iraq and Syria, while not forgetting that ISIS is a global organization,” said Colin P. Clarke, a senior research fellow at the Soufan Center, using another acronym for the group.

Though disheveled and never standing up in the video released Monday, al-Baghdadi’s appearance alone contradicted past Russian and Iraqi claims the militant leader had been killed during the long war targeting the militants. It was the first time he has appeared in public since June 29, 2014, when he delivered a sermon from the pulpit of Mosul’s Great Mosque of al-Nuri.

The contrasts in the appearances are glaring.

In 2014, he wore an expensive-looking watch and a neatly trimmed beard and urged Muslims around the world to swear allegiance to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate and obey him as its leader.

In Monday’s video, he sat on the floor, with an AK-74 assault rifle at his side like the one Osama bin Laden took in Afghanistan during the mujahedeen’s fight against the Soviets and always carried with him. He had a big bushy beard and wore a black tunic and a military-style beige vest over it.

No longer an administrator, al-Baghdadi wants to be seen as an insurgent leader.

Analysts say that both glosses over the loss of territory the militants claimed would spark an apocalyptic confrontation with the “crusader” West and ensures he maintains his status in the extremist world.

“We believe it is really an attempt to divert attention from the core group’s heavy losses and to ensure that the franchise groups and grassroots supporters remain loyal to the Islamic State pole of the jihadist universe,” the Austin, Texas-based private intelligence firm Stratfor said in an analysis. “Many are saying that the video is a show of strength, but we believe it is more likely an act of desperation.”

The loss of its territory cuts both ways, however.

Foreign militants once part of the “caliphate” now have scattered, like they did at the end of the 1980s war against the Soviets in Afghanistan and after the 2001 U.S.led invasion that toppled the Taliban government sheltering al-Qaida.

Al-Baghdadi barely mentioned Iraq and Syria in the 18-minute video, except to praise the steadfastness of his fighters there. Instead, he congratulated militants in Libya, “brothers” in Burkina Faso, Mali, Pakistan and the Western Sahara for pledging allegiance.

Sri Lankan police late Wednesday made public the names and photographs of nine suicide bombers who carried out the series of Easter Day explosions, including the locations where their bombs were detonated.

The list of eight men and one woman included the man officials say led the attack, extremist preacher Mohamed Zahran, also known as Zahran Hashim, who was one of two attackers at Colombo’s Shangri-La Hotel. The woman who was identified was the wife of another bomber who triggered an explosion in front of her children at her spice trader father-in-law’s Colombo villa, killing herself and three police officers investigating the earlier nearsimultaneous blasts at three churches and three hotels.

While some IS claims of late have been exaggerated or outright bogus, its focus on expanding outward follows the same pattern of al-Qaida, which grew to have dangerous franchises in areas like Yemen.

“This is part of the vengeance that awaits the crusaders and their henchmen,” al-Baghdadi said in the video.

He extolled militants in Sri Lanka for “striking the homes of the crusaders in their Easter, in vengeance for their brothers in Baghouz,” a reference to the Islamic State group’s last bastion in eastern Syria, which was captured

by U.S.-backed fighters in March. The militants involved in the attacks that killed more than 250 people followed a local extremist leader, but more than 30 Sri Lankans are believed to have once been Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq.

“It is still unclear if any of the Sri Lanka terrorists had fought for ISIS in Syria and Iraq and were returnees, or if they were locally trained and linked up with ISIS online,” an analysis from the AsiaPacific Foundation said.

“What we are witnessing has been an evolving terrorist dynamic where an attack is developed and conceived abroad but that local radicals are recruited to implement the final stage.”

Simply put: The new threat from the Islamic State is a lot like the old threat, except the group doesn’t have a home address anymore. For years, the group’s leaders huddled in IS-held cities in Iraq and Syria to plot attacks abroad,

even as they terrorized residents at home.

Now mass casualty assaults like the 2015 attacks on the Bataclan theater in Paris may be planned much closer to local militants’ homes, like the Easter attack in Sri Lanka.

One of the churches hit was just a town from where the alleged leader of that assault preached his extremist message.

That has been the case in the southern Philippines, where al-Baghdadi’s group has set its eyes on latching on to local insurgencies or remotely executing plots it has financed, such as a massive siege of the Muslimmajority city of Marawi.

Hundreds of IS-aligned local militants occupied buildings, homes and school campuses there in May 2017.

It took Filipino troops five months to quell the urban insurrection, which was reportedly patterned after the IS takeover of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

IS-aligned militants are also accused of carrying out two suicide attacks in the southern Philippines, including the Jan. 27 suicide bombing of a Roman Catholic cathedral during a Mass that killed 23.

That’s led to a monthslong counterinsurgency operation that Philippine Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano said

A reflection of my college experience at MNSU

LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR In late August of 2015 after my parents dropped off my things and told me to have fun and be safe before driving back to Saint Cloud, I stood there in my dorm room, sick to my stomach with anxiety and a head full of hefty expectations of what my college experience would be.

Now, a week prior to graduating I can confidently say that I don’t know exactly what my career path is going to be after I get that piece of paper in my hand, but I can say that I now know who I am and am proud of the person I have become here and a lot of that is because of the reporter and the friends I made along the way.

One of the best things to happen to me on this campus managed to occur

within the first couple days of my freshman year and it happened out of pure luck.

If I wasn’t assigned to the A4 level of the Crawford dormitory, I don’t think I would have finished my four years at MNSU. Almost everyone on A4 knew no one and nearly everyone on that floor took it upon themselves to change that. I distinctly remember walking into the A4 lounge to a group of misfits, people that would have each been in a separate clich in high school.

Honestly I never thought I would be friends with these people because they didn’t look like the people I would have hung out with in high school and they come from completely different walks of life. However, every day I found myself in that lounge talking about absolutely nothing and absolutely everything at the same time.

I knew everyone’s name on my floor and had almost everyone’s phone number which is pretty impressive.

We would spend the entire day in that lounge some of us would even sleep there.

Everyone of the roommates I have had throughout college

have been on that floor and I already know they are some of best friends I will have in my entire life.

Working at the MSU Reporter I had a very similar experience to the dorms.

However, it took two long years of myself trying to imitate “Animal House” that was basically an extension of my teenage years void of all responsibilities. It wasn’t until I spent a few too many days nearly sleeping through my 2 p.m. class that I realized I needed to grow up and get involved in something bigger than myself.

A friend of a friend of a friend, Gabe Hewitt, just happened to be the Editor in Chief of the campus paper and apparently they were in need of an A&E writer. Before having to write one too many research papers I was obsessed with writing and with that and my obsession with movies writing for A&E was a perfect outlet for me to geek out. I remember the first article I wrote in the A&E section. It took me 4 hours of constantly rewriting and after it was published my roommates hung it on our fridge like proud parents.

The end of that year I was

then asked if I wanted to be A&E editor by the current A&E editor at the time. Not knowing exactly what I was getting myself into I accepted.

The first production day of the new editor staff I knewno one.

My desk was separated from the other two section editors Maddie Diemert and Kevin Korbel by a giant cubicle wall and it wasn’t until about the fourth week, when I was told I looked like Beaker from the muppets and for whatever reason given the nickname “Meep” by Kevin, that I started to think, “these guys are alright.”

It’s amazing how being in a small room for 16 plus hours a week with a group of people can change from the worst part of your week to the best part of your year.

Along with the section editors came some new writers which started to sense the strong connection the editors had and later stopped by during production days. There are not enough words to describe how much I grew through the reporter both in my professional life and my personal life.

I will never forget Kevin playing his horrible music,

Maddie and I bickering with each other to the point where the whole CSU could hear us shouting at each other, the blossoming of my amazing bromance with Mansoor Ahmad the web editor, or the office manager Jane Tastad being a second mother to us all.

College was not what I expected, it was not the best years of my life. In retrospect it is the stranges time of your life; everything is up in the air, you’re an adult but not really , you think you know what life has in store for you but not really.

The closest thing you can really describe it to is a combination between purgatory and Club Med. The only thing that is certain is the people you choose to spend this long strange trip with and that determines a lot about you.

My experience here shaped me into a person I am proud to say I am. While classes taught me a couple things it was the people I met along the way that pushed me and taught me some of the most valuable lessons that I wouldn’t find in a classroom, but I still found on a college campus.

White House wants $4.5 billion in emergency border funding

JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER So, we’ve come to the last week of the semester, the last issue of the paper, and the last year of my university career. The time has come for me to descend from the Pnyx as well.

The Pnyx is named after a hill in Athens where the ancient Athenians held their democratic assemblies. I created this column to fill a gap, namely the lack of political and policy discussion in the paper, and to inform the student body about politics and policy.

Politics is not a panacea. It cannot save you, nor anyone else. Political activism is crucial and important, but do not put ideology on an altar. I made that mistake for a long time, and it was a painful thing to let go of.

This column has brought me a great deal of joy, and I hope that it has brought the paper’s readers more insight into the political sphere. I regret not joining the paper earlier, but hindsight is perfect, and foresight is flawed.

The Pnyx will be there taken over by my coworker, Michael McShane, next year. It will remain the MSU Reporter’s political column.

Leaving the Pnyx is bittersweet, but I hope that it will serve as a tool of political expression and information for future writers as it has for me.

And with that, I will depart from the hill. May the road rise to meet you, and, in the words of the immortal George Carlin, may the forces of evil become confused on their way to your abode.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Wednesday asked Congress for an additional $4.5 billion in emergency funds for the U.S.-Mexico border as it grapples with a surge of Central American migrant families seeking refuge in the U.S. Most of the money requested would be used to increase shelter capacity and care for the migrant families who have been fleeing poverty and violence in their home countries. Department of Homeland Security officials said they would likely run out of money without the extra cash.

“DHS projects it will exhaust resources well before the end of the fiscal year,” read the administration’s formal request letter to Congress, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The request is just the latest in a flurry of efforts by the administration to cope with what it calls a “crisis” that officials say has overwhelmed federal resources and capacity.

President Donald Trump has railed against aides and Congress for failing to do more to address the situation, but has also made clear he

believes his hard line on immigration was key to his 2016 victory and intends to continue to hammer the issue to motivate his base heading into his 2020 reelection campaign.

It also comes a day after a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy in the care of U.S. Health and Human Services died after falling ill with a fever and chills. His death is under investigation. Two other children died in Customs and Border Protection custody late last year.

The 2019 fiscal year budget already contained $415 million for humanitarian assistance at the border, including $28 million in medical care, senior administration officials said Wednesday.

But the White House now wants an extra $3.3 billion to increase shelter capacity for unaccompanied migrant children and for the feeding and care of families, plus transportation and processing centers.

Of the new request, $1.1 billion would go toward operational support, including personnel expenses, detention beds, transportation and investigative work on smuggling. The remaining

$178 million would be used for mission support, including technology upgrades.

It’s unclear, however, if Congress will approve the extra funding. Getting Democrats and Republicans to agree on how to address the border situation has been a challenge, especially on the heels of the longest government shutdown in history over Trump’s demand for border wall funding.

Trump eventually declared a national emergency declaration to circumvent Congress to get the funding elsewhere.

Senior administration officials, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the request by name, insisted the new money would not be used for border barriers and said the funds were different from those Trump has sought to access through his declaration of a national emergency.

The number of families and children arriving alone at the border is now outpacing the number of single adults, putting new strains on the immigration system.

The U.S. is on track to have as many as 1 million

cross this year, the highest number since the early 2000s, when most of those crossing were single men from Mexico looking for work.

Border stations were not constructed to handle such a large volume of children and families, and they have been pushed to the breaking point.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered 50,036 unaccompanied children during the last budget year, and so far this budget year there have been 35,898 children. Their average length of stay in a government shelter is 66 days, up from 59 during fiscal year 2018 and 40 in 2016’s fiscal year.

Customs and Border Protection on Tuesday encountered its largest group to date: 424 people, comprised mostly of children and families, in rural New Mexico.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said Tuesday before a House subcommittee that his department was running out of money amid the spike and said officials would be submitting a supplemental request, but didn’t say for how much.

Joe Biden’s haunting past and heavy baggage

MICHAEL MCSHANE STAFF WRITER Joe Biden has been mentioned as a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination long before he announced his candidacy and now that he has finally joined the other candidates are already figuring out how to beat him.

Biden, however, is already finding ways to beat himself.

While polls are great and no other candidate can possibly say they had a better first week in their candidacy, we cannot ignore that Biden carries a hefty amount of baggage. Frankly, he isn’t really helping himself on that front.

What many political commentators knew was going to be brought up once Biden became a candidate was his disastrous handling of Anita Hill’s testimony in front

of Congress during Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s nomination hearing.

Anita Hill was not given the due process she deserved that day and for a long time what happened to her during those proceedings were feared to have been forgotten through the passage of time, but now they have reemerged with the main target being Biden.

Biden, who was chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, had full reign during the proceedings and instead of giving Hill a fair hearing, the

committee hurried through her hearing and placed Thomas on the highest court in the country.

People were angry then, and people are just as angry now. Maybe even more so, because even when faced with evidence that he hadn’t done his part in giving Hill even the chance to get witnesses to testify under her behalf, Biden has been shifting the blame rather than admit to his mistake.

If this was any other candidate, Biden’s campaign

would be dead-on-arrival, instead Biden is still going strong in the polls with his front-runner status unaffected.

But now what may very well be the first speed bump in Biden’s campaign could easily be fixed if Biden put away his pride and apologize.

One apology, maybe two just for making people wait.

Biden, however, if he wants to beat Trump, has to show the world the opposite of Trump.

As much as people would like to not think it, there have been many instances

where Biden has indeed been “handsy” with people in a creepy way. Is Biden trying to be creepy or is doing it in a manner that would be classified as “crossing the line”?

To me, Biden doesn’t know about the bubble that surrounds everybody.

Personal space is not sacred ground if you will. Is he doing it for sexual gratification? No, that I do not believe.

I believe Biden has just lived a good majority of his life in a time where stuff like that was indeed normal, or at the very least, not criticized as it is now.

That being said, it still is not a good thing to have and he himself has been backpedaling on those apologizes as well. Biden cannot sincerely apologize to the frustration of every living person around him.

ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER Print newspapers are fading away, but this does not mean the journalists that write for them are also leaving.

Journalists have found their new home online. Journalism isn’t dying, it’s evolving.

Growing up I created my own newspaper with its very own comic section for my house.

I made a newspaper for my fourth-grade class and wrote for my high school paper.

Shockingly enough, I now write for my college’s paper.

However, many people ask why I still write for a print paper if journalism is moving towards the internet? Why even put my energy towards something that is supposedly dying?

My motivation is simple, I still genuinely enjoy and believe in newspapers.

Being a mass media student, I love the digital world and all that it encompasses but there is something so satisfying about seeing your name in print.

In addition, there is still respect for someone that

The process of interviewing and researching for stories doesn’t go away just because their findings are no longer inked on a physical page.

Each print newspaper has to find its place in this digital jungle.

Whether that be adding a podcast or switching to digital stories only. There will be losses and I know it’s not a simple transition but it’s a necessary one.

We cannot be scared of change; we must embrace this new age with open arms and know that a journalist’s voice can and never will be silenced. I write for a newspaper because it’s not dead, it’s shifting.

Letter from the editor: thank you!

Dear Mavericks,

This will be the last time I write to you as editor in chief.

They say the last moments of any relationship are the toughest ones. Even though I thought about this day since the very beginning, I never imagined I would have all these emotions gushing out right now.

I’m feeling like a runner who just finished running a marathon, getting to the end, seeing his family and friends at the finish line. It’s hard not to feel relief, excitement and hope for the next generation.

First, I thank God immensely for making it possible for me to complete my editorial year with so much favor, so much blessing and an amazing family of friends and mentors. If it had not been the Lord by my side, where would I have been? It has been such an amazing journey that I will attempt to thank all those who make this journey possible and enjoyable.

Thanks to Nicole Faust and the Residential Life team for the early advice, communication and introduction to national insights on journalism excellence. I’m pretty sure the next chapter will be vastly different, and as Myles Munroe said, the mango fruit you get from the tree came from the seed, just plant it! I’m confident that

family for providing support in my fashion photography endeavors. It was not easy starting a club, and I am so happy to have done it with you.

I believe the most important lesson I got to learn is leadership. Learning how to lead oneself first before others. Thank you to the KMSU and Encounter family for making me aware of this. Knowing what I know, would I do it any different?

Of course…but I won’t dare.

These lessons were vital for the next chapter in my life.

One I’m certain will be more exciting, more challenging and more rewarding that the one about to end. Even though I’m looking forward to a rather chill summer, there is still unfinished business and the baton must be passed to the next runners.

Early Thanksgiving? Yung Gravy brings the Meat and Potatoes to MNSU LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR Yung Gravy walked on the CSU Ballroom stage sporting a cast and carrying a Pedialyte to possibly recover either from a cold or the night before. However, this didn’t stop Gravy from putting on a high energy performance while also personally interacting with the audience during every song.

Rapper Yung Gravy, born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota performed Monday in the CSU Ballroom of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Gravy, with nearly 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify is known for his catchy, self-assured, but quirky rap anthems.

The performance was hosted by the Student Events Team as well as Summit and

Jacob Heights in an annual event called Kato Jam. The concert was held exclusively and free of admission to MNSU students who donated a piece of clothing to the

local organization Dream Closet.

The performance kicked off with highly acclaimed, Minneapolis native, DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip known for his versatile sets

that bring the audience together. This performance was no different as he played remixes of nostalgic hits such as “Stacy’s Mom”, “Call Me Maybe”, and even the

Game of Thrones Episode 3 Review The Battle of Winterfell was won, but at what cost?

KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER The final season of the mega-hit TV show Game of Thrones hasn’t gone all that great so far. The first episode kicked things off in the most milquetoast, nothing way possible. Yes it re-established what was going to happen and what everyone was doing, but it failed to have any sense of urgency or drama, instead opting for a more day in a life, soap opera feel.

The next episode was a welcomed return to form and what most expected from the final season. We spent the episode saying goodbye to our favorite characters as

they spent what they assumed was their last night on earth together. It was filled with great character moments and the sense of urgency and anxiety that was missing from the previous episode.

Last weekend the third episode of this six episode season released. It was another disappointment, but unlike the first episode there are no excuses. You can’t chalk it up to being the first episode of the season and being saddled with the burden of building up the stakes and re-establishing the plot. This was the episode that was supposed to be the biggest, most action packed, heart pounding yet. All it turned out to be was another battle.

Only a few side characters died, even though it seemed like everyone from Jaimie to Tyrion to even Jon Snow

were about to meet their imminent demise.

Out of the gate, things were bad. The plan for the fight started with the Dothraki charging the army of undead. Obviously they

all died because duh. The undead can only die to certain weapons, there were probably 1,000 of them to each Dothraki rider, and the battlefield was the darkest field I’ve ever seen. Some-

how, despite those odds, Jorah survived that initial ride

and made it back to the rest of the living before the undead descended upon them.

Outside of terrible battle strategies like this, some of the things that happen in this episode are just plain dumb.

Melissandre shows up out of thin air and helps them win the battle in a Deus Ex Machina moment reminiscent of when Benjen Stark saved Jon Snow in season seven.

Jaime, Brienne, and Tormund all were completley walloped by undead at different points, and would have died had they not been wearing some very, very strong plot armor.

Speaking of plot armor, both Jon and Dany seemingly cannot die,as they both were faced with certain death multiple times and failed to even be severly injured. Things like this are why many claim the show has dipped in quality since the well of source material ran dry.

Despite this, there are some good moments to be scrounged from the episode.

Arya fulfills the prophecy that Melisandre ascribed to her earlier in the show, the dragon fights were pretty awesome, and some characters have some great moments that deserve recognition.

Arya, as previously mentioned, fulfills her prophecy by killing the Night King and securing the victory for the living. Jon fights the Night King in a battle of Dragons that is exceptionally cool.

Tyrion and Sansa defend the survivors in the Crypts as best they can. The deaths, while too few, were great when we saw them. young Lady Mormont goes out a Giant killer, deafeating one of the monsters in her final moments. Jorah defends his Khaleesi with everything he has, giving his life to protect the woman he loves. Theon finally proves himself to be a good man, defending Bran against the Night King long enough to give Arya the time she needed.

This episode, while being a huge disappointment, is better than the first episode because of many of the smaller moments throughout the battle. I hope the rest of the season can deliver the season we all anticipated, because if it doesn’t the show won’t be remembered for the years of great storytelling it delivered over the past decade. Instead, it will be remembered for tripping at the finish line.

Mankato’s Musicians: A Year in Review

MARK REYNOLDS STAFF WRITER The past year has been an incredibly dense year for Mankato’s music scene.

We’ve seen single releases, EPs, albums, tours, concerts and much more. Here are a few highlights of some musicians from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Irie Minds This Mankato-based reggae group has had quite a year. Led by David Ostrom, who graduated from the University last spring, Irie Minds has played dozens of shows, including as an opening act for worldrenowned Somali singer Aar Maanta. They also released a new single “It’s Alright” on April 11 and announced their second EP “Big Love” and a summer tour of the same name.

Alec John and The Sky Surfers Alec John and The Sky Surfers found their own niche with their indie surf pop music. The band wasn’t even formed at this time last year, and now they are setting up to release their first EP “Surf Mania” in June. They have also been busy playing lots of shows including a weekender in Sioux City, Iowa and Omaha, Neb. Last Import

This melodic surf-punk trio has exploded in the past year. With MNSU student Emily Bjorke on guitar and lead vocals, this all-girl group has found something special.

In the past year, the band has opened for Bastille at the Palace Theater; sold out Honey in Minneapolis with Foster the People; sold out the Turf Club with Bob Mould; sold out the 7th Street Entry twice; released a self-titled album; and much more.

Anastasia Ellis Listening to Anastasia Ellis’ music is a very personal, disarming experience. She has been spreading her messages of self-love and mental health awareness throughout the many shows that she’s played in the past year. Ellis toured several Minnesota cities in February, when she also released her 3-song EP “Love &

Selma Wedberg Since moving from Sweden to Minnesota when she was 15, Selma Wedberg has been using her unique perspective to create beautiful music.

This past year, she has been hard at work in the studio.

Once Dj Tiiiiiiiiiip managed to get the audience to forget about their upcoming finals and to get “lit”, Yung Gravy took the stage representing the purple and gold colors that he swore was coincidental. Gravy opened with his energetic and hypnotic song “Knock Out” as the crowd shouted “Gravy Train” while simultaneously moving their hands to the beat.

Afterwards, Gravy explained to the crowd how he always wanted to visit Mankato because of how “lit” he heard it was. Gravy then asked the audience to take out their lighters or flashlights on their phones as he performed his newest song “Magic”. Other songs Gravy performed include the track that launched his career “Mr. Clean” which cleverly

uses a beat sampled from the 1950s’ hit-song “Mr. Sandman”.

Gravy’s onstage humorous antics matched his comedic songs the artist is known for.

Throughout the performance, Gravy struggled to single handedly tie his shoe laces due to his broken right arm.

To solve this, Gravy stuck his foot into the audience so someone could tie his shoe.

Towards the end of the concert, Gravy performed his most popular song “One Thot, Two Thot, Red Thot, Blue Thot” after numerous requests throughout the show. Gravy finished with a remix of the song “Sweet Victory” from a fan-favorite episode of SpongeBob. He then encouraged the audience to party with him in Downtown Mankato before he exited the stage

MNSU Department of Theatre & Dance presents the 2019 Spring Dance Concert

MANKATO – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre & Dance will present the 2019 Spring Dance Concert May 3 & 4 and the Student Dance Showcase on May 5 in the Ted Paul Theatre in the Earley Center for Performing Arts.

The May 3 and 4 performances will be a full-length concert featuring eight pieces choreographed by both faculty and students, and featuring 39 student performers.

The May 5 performance is

a Student Dance Showcase, which is choreographed, produced and performed by students.

The Dance Concert will feature a tap dance performance presented by Andreas Guest Artist Karla Grotting of Flying Foot Forum. Grotting is a dancer. choreographer, educator and producer with 37 years of experience.

The 2019 Spring Dance Concert is at 7:30 p.m. on May 3, and 2:00 p.m. on May 4. The Student Dance Showcase is on May 5 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $10 regular, $9 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more; and $8 for MSU students for the Spring Dance Concert. Tickets for the Student Showcase are $5 and available at the door.

To binge or not to binge: Netflix’s Chambers

MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR Netflix just released their new Netflix Original April 26 titled “Chambers.”

Netflix has had a good ride when it comes to their original movies and shows, and “Chambers” is not an exception. The thrilling horror drama sends chills down the spine at the end of every episode, following Navajo descendant Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose) as she tries to figure out what (or who) is haunting her.

The show begins with Sasha running out to meet her boyfriend TJ, also of Navajo descent. They ride down a deserted highway listening to “Still Ill” by The Smiths on their way to finally lose their virginity. But things go awry when they finally take it to the next episode and Sasha’s heart explodes- literally.

Sasha undergoes an emer-

gency heart transplant as another teen dies that night; the ultimately disturbed Becky Lefevre (Lilliya Reid).

Then months later, with a visible scar down her chest, Sasha agrees to meet with Becky’s parents, Nancy (Uma Thurman) and Ben (Tony Goldwyn).

Thurman and Goldwyn, being veterans in the acting scene take on the sympathetic roles of grieving parents, who by the end of first episode become creepily obsessed with Sasha and her ownership of their daughter’s heart. They give her a scholarship at a fancy private school, a Prius, even their daughter’s own clothes.

Through these awkward encounters with Becky’s parents, Sasha struggles with Becky’s lingering soul that still resides in the heart.

Becky comes through Sasha several times and wreaks havoc on Sasha’s family and friends.

Near the end of the first season, Becky even starts to physically come through Sasha, changing Sasha’s hair color and eye color. Becky is slowly overtaking Sasha’s

And if Becky’s unsettling parents and a dead girl haunting her body isn’t enough to deal with, there’s also this secret group called “the Annex,” that has everything to do with Sasha’s transplant and Becky’s untimely death.

“Chambers” ends with a major cliff hanger as well that has had many fans on their toes and waiting impatiently for the next season. I am personally one of those fans.

It’s safe to say that “Chambers” has it all from unsolved murders to a creepy secret society that wants to brain-

wash its cohorts. There’s even the classic crazy old woman who runs after Sasha time and time again, repeating bad omens and heading warnings.

Horror and thriller fans alike will binge this original series until the very end.

Baseball dominates once again; take two against Sioux Falls As the regular season continues to wind down, the team is finishing strong on all cylinders

MEL STRAMM STAFF WRITER Maverick Baseball took two wins in their second to last double header of the regular season against the Sioux Falls Cougars on Wednesday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Mankato kept their winning streak alive and won both games with a score of 4-1 in the first and 12-1 in the second game.

In the first game, senior catcher Tom Imholte scored on a single by first baseman Ty Buck during the top of the first, closely followed by a score by shortstop Nick Altermatt on a wild pitch.

Pitcher Jon Ludwig pitched 3 innings allowing no hits or runs for the Cougars before sophomore Cam Kline scored another run for the Mavericks top of the fourth, putting Mankato up 3-0.

Kline then went on to score again during the 6th, batted in by Jack Waletich.

Due to a hit by the pitch, Sioux Falls was able to get on the scoreboard, however the game was concluded after 7 innings with a Mankato win.

Mav sports year in review: a year of excitement As the school year ends, staff writer Aaron Young looks into the biggest highlights of the season

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER With the school year winding down and student’s hitting the books for finals, it’s time to look back at what transpired this year in Maverick sports.

Football was one of the biggest highlights this season, as they had an undefeated regular season heading into the NCAA playoffs.

The team had a deep run into the playoffs, which included victories against CSU Pueblo and Tarleton State at home, before facing Ferris State in the semi-finals.

Unfortunately, their season ended at the hands of the Bulldogs as they lost at home 42-25.

From football to swimming, the swim team had some success in the spring as they placed first in the UW-Stevens Point Invite. They would then

go on to defeat the MSU Moorhead Dragons 163-125 in their last meet of the year.

During the NSIC championships the swim team would finish second behind St. Cloud State, where history was made as sophomore Lily Borgenheimer set a school and NSIC record in the 200

breast-stroke with a time of 2.12.78.

The men basketball team also continued their success in the spring, while the women would struggle throughout.

with a three-game winning streak before their season came to an end against #2 St. Cloud State in the NSIC tournament.

As for the men’s basketball team, they started out their year with a three-game winning streak. Highlights include a massive victory

against Southwest Minnesota State 102-71 and a thriller with the Dragons of MSU Moorhead, 88-87.

A farewell to the Reporter KEVIN KORBEL SPORTS EDITOR Since I was five years old, I helped my parents out on the family farm back home in Lonsdale, Minnesota.

Growing up, I helped out my family throughout the years, scooping, digging, cleaning, scrubbing, and fixing anything that needed to be done around the farm.

As time went on, I began to learn many more life lessons on the farm, and in doing so eventually applied it to everyday life, like how good things come to those who wait and work hard in life.

This has been the antithesous throughout my personal, athletic and academic career.

When I graduated high school in 2015, I was involved in many things: football, baseball, track and FCA. Fast forward to November of 2017, I was looking for a new way to branch out and be more involved in college.

I wasn’t the best at sports growing up, but I loved the sport industry and I always thought it would be awesome to work in PR. I stumbled upon the Reporter newspaper one day after class, and turned to the sports section, where I saw a specific article nitpicking the Minnesota Vikings. I thought it was so interesting and funny that on that day, I decided to walk to CSU 293, and fill out an application to try and work for the newspaper. It was on that day that I ran into the Editor-in-Chief at the time, Gabe Hewitt, who on that day hired me on the spot to write.

As I started to write articles basically about how horrible our Minnesota sports teams were all semester, while also covering MSU athletic events, the sports editor at the time, Tommy Wiita, was set to graduate and needed a replacement, and it was at this time he asked me to take over. At the time, I reluctantly said “yes”, and just a month after being hired, I was given a bigger role as an editor.

In the beginning of the new role, it got off to a rough start, as it was just me and one other writer at the time.

When I first started editing the paper last year, I had very minimal experience editing before, so it came

as a challenge to me doing anything editing-wise for the newspaper.

That night, I stayed for 10 hours straight trying to edit the section of the newspaper, and as I went home at 1am on that cold January night, I wondered at the end of the day if I made the right decision of being an editor for the paper, but here I am two years later.

After two years, I’ve had a lot of great opportunities covering events for the newspaper, which included: Super Bowl 52, Minnesota Vikings training camp and games, Minnesota Twins caravan, MSU baseball, football, hockey, track and basketball games, and many more.

While the experiences have been great, the biggest thing I’ll still never forget about this paper is the relationships with people around the office who make our paper possible.

Thanks to Maddie, Lucas, and Mansoor who worked alongside me this year the most editing the paper this year. While we did experience ups and downs throughout the year, working with them made it a little less hard to go to the office every day, even if they think my taste of music is something a “dad” would listen to. The days we spent running around the office, going to the dining hall and making podcasts will be the biggest memories. I will especially never, ever forget working on TimeLapse with you guys. It was truly a night I’ll never forget.

Thank you to our office managers, Jane and Dana.

Both of you have helped me push through deadlines, and have also brightened up my day whenever I came into the office. You two are the heartbeats of this office, and without you guys our paper could not function.

Thank you to all the past and present writers on our sports staff. It’s been a wild run, but I think we made the best section possible. As

Andrew now steps in for me year, I’m confident he’ll do a great job.

I’ll never forget my time at the Reporter, staying up until the bitter hours of the night working on an issue, working on SportZone or SlapShot, or just escaping to the office just to do homework, or make popcorn and waffles, or to just hang out in general with the people in the office.

As I culminate my academic career, I look at it not as an

end of a long journey, but as a start of a new chapter in my life, and I can’t wait to see what’s next to come.

I’ll end with a quote from the movie Rudy, and that quote is, “you don’t have to prove nothin’ to nobody but yourself.” As I stand today, I can confidently say that I’ve proven to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to. So goodbye room 293, goodbye Reporter, and goodbye readers.

Harden, Rockets hit speed bump; lose first two games against Warriors Golden State controls series at 2-0, as the next two games slowly shift to Houston

ANDREW NEURURER STAFF WRITER The Golden State Warriors are undoubtedly the favorites to win the NBA Championship for the foreseeable future, until there’s a shakeup on their roster or they can be stopped.

The Warriors have won three of the last four championships. So, until there is any sort of stop to its dynasty, they will be viewed as the favorites. Golden State faces off against the Houston Rockets in the NBA Playoffs for the second straight season.

During the 2018 playoffs, the Warriors were able to win the series, but they were challenged into a Game 7.

The Rockets are sought to be the best chance in the Western Conference to dethroning the Warriors because of their style of play.

shoot the ball well from 3 and attempt a good amount from distance. Despite the Rockets being down 0-2, they will have a good chance of evening up the series in the next two games.

These next two games will be played at the Toyota Center and odds are, James Harden will attempt to even up the series. The best way possible for that to happen is for Harden to have a great

next few games.

The reigning Most Valuable Player and contender for this year’s award, will need to continue that level of play. This season the former Arizona State star is averaging 36.1 points 7.5 assists, 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. That is the most points averaged throughout a season since Michael Jordan averaged 37.0 points per game in 1986-87.

There are other key players from both sides that will have an impact on the game.

Continuing the Rockets side of things, they have players like Chris Paul, Clint Capela and P.J. Tucker.

Paul is getting up there in age, but he can still play defense, score the ball and facilitate things on offense.

Capela matches up well against the Warriors because

he can block shots and be an athletic big man that runs the floor well. With the amount of 3’s the Rockets take, they’re sure to miss a good amount.

Helping on the glass will play a role in how the Rockets perform.

On the Warriors side, they have many players that will takeover games. Athletes like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green. All four are All-Stars and are the main reason this dynasty is so strong.

This series hasn’t gone the way Houston would like, but they do have a chance to even things up at home. The first game the Rockets lost by four points and the second was determined by just six.

The next game will be played on Saturday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m.

basketball team’s season came to an unfortunate end when they faced the Beavers of Bemidji State, losing 66-56 in the first round of the NSIC playoffs before losing to the eventual D-II champions, the Northwest Missouri State Cougars.

As for the women’s tennis team, after an abrupt end to their fall semester, they would win three out of four in the start of February before ending on a rough note losing to UMD in a close one, 3-2.

The men’s baseball team has had a successful spring year starting out with two wins against Arkansas-Monticello.

Throughout the year, they are 8-3 at home and 15-2 on the road.

Junior outfielder Jordan Hart made history early on in the season after eclipsing most home runs by a Maverick in a career, which was originally 29 home runs

by previous holder Josh Smith. The team is currently on a five-game winning streak and hopes to continue their success moving forward.

Even more impressive is the women’s softball team, who are currently on a 13 game-winning streak.

Senior catcher Cori Kennedy has been the MVP of the team so far leading with five home runs and 27 RBI’s on the season.

Pitcher Lexi Schoper is also having a fantastic year, with a record of 10-3 having struck out 54 batters.

Perhaps the team with the biggest success so far this season has been the Maverick men’s hockey.

Having only lost one game at home, they were dominant throughout. They took on Bowling Green in the WCHA championship, defeating them and advancing to the Frozen Four. Making it

to their fifth straight Frozen Four appearance, the Mavs season ended with a loss at the hands of Providence.

As for the women, they had their fair share of success but the season ended with consecutive losses to Ohio State.

As for the golf teams, the women went backto-back, winning the NSIC championship, whereas the men would finish fourth.

Then there was the Track and Field team, where both the men and women’s teams dominated throughout the year, placing first in every invite, which is a milestone for sure.

It sure has been a whirlwind of a year for all the Maverick sports teams, and good luck to all of them for the remainder of the year.
